In the vibrant community of Oak Bay Village, Carlton House, an independent living senior’s residence, is quietly redefining what it means to thrive later in life. With approximately 95 residents of different backgrounds, and 42 employees, the community is supporting learning and growth by looking inward to an extraordinary resource: the knowledge and experience of residents and staff. Since January 2024, this treasure trove of careers, hobbies, stories, and interests has fueled the community’s highly popular Passion Projects Speakers Series. Far from the outdated notion that retirement signals an end to learning or growth, the program actively encourages residents and staff to present on topics of their choice, in areas of their interest or expertise. The initiative was introduced well over a year ago by Carlton House’s Wellness Manager, Debby Macmurchie, and it has quickly become a fan favourite. Always well-attended, these in-house “TED Talks” bring people together twice a month and enrich their lives through shared learning and connection.
“It’s incredible to witness the sense of purpose and connection this program fosters,” observes Macmurchie. “The room is always packed, residents genuinely support one another, and afterwards, everyone knows each other a little better.”
The scope of presentations is as diverse as the residents themselves. From a former NASA career to a resident who
taught himself saxophone after retirement (and then gave a concert!), and artists showing their work or providing live demonstrations, the program is a testament to lifelong passions. Others have shared their cultural heritage, travel adventures, or even practical skills like flower arranging. Staff members have also contributed, offering insights into topics like AI, physiotherapy, and dance. In some cases, family members also participate by helping with research or
At The Old Farm Market, we hear the concerns of our community — especially around the sourcing of our products. Questions about avoiding American produce have, of course, come up more often lately, and we understand where they come from. We share the same values of supporting local farms, Canadian growers, and ethical supply chains. In fact, we prioritize it when sourcing our products.
However, we also live in a nuanced world where not every customer can afford to pay a premium for non-American alternatives. For many families, especially in today’s economy, access to affordable fresh food isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. Our community’s most vulnerable need access to healthy food at affordable prices.
This is why our buying approach is rooted in balance. We prioritize Canadian and local produce when it’s seasonally available, and we make those options as visible and plentiful as possible. At the same time, we won’t leave behind the families who depend on affordable pricing to put nutritious food on the table. Sourcing both locally and affordably is a balancing act that requires us to consider every single one of our customers.
At The Old Farm Market, our mission is to feed people — all people — fairly and affordably. We believe the best kind of food policy is one that includes everyone; everybody should have access to healthy food without barriers.
Thank you for supporting our values, our farmers, and our community — even when the choices aren’t always simple.
presenting, which often adds another layer of personal connection.
This unique program not only entertains and educates but profoundly strengthens the bonds within Carlton House. It allows for personal journeys and knowledge to be shared and truly helps people to get to know new friends. It’s a powerful reminder that at any age, the capacity to learn, share, and connect remains boundless.

Ebuzzing, or hissing sound that no one else can?
You’re not imagining it— that’s tinnitus, and you’re not alone. In fact, 1 in 7 adults experiences some form of tinnitus, making it a common yet often misunderstood condition.
There are some surprising facts about tinnitus that many people don’t know, along with ways to help manage or prevent its effects
NOT JUST RINGING
Tinnitus isn’t just a ringing sound. It can also manifest as buzzing, clicking, whooshing, or even roaring. Identifying and avoiding triggers, such as loud noises and caffeine, can help minimize symptoms.
MORE COMMON IN MEN
Studies show that men are more likely to experience tinnitus than women. Regular hearing check-ups can help detect early signs of tinnitus and prevent further hearing issues.
WINTER CAN MAKE IT WORSE
Cold weather and circulation changes can heighten symptoms, making tinnitus more noticeable during winter months.Keeping your ears
warm and maintaining proper circulation through exercise can help reduce discomfort.
LINKED TO HEARING LOSS
While tinnitus can occur on its own, it’s often associated with hearing loss or prolonged exposure to loud noise. Protecting your ears by using earplugs in noisy environments and lowering headphone volumes can help prevent tinnitus-related hearing damage.
STRESS PLAYS A ROLE
High levels of stress and anxiety can worsen tinnitus symptoms, creating a frustrating cycle for those affected. Practicing relaxation techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing, can help manage stress levels and reduce the impact of tinnitus.
THE GOOD NEWS?
Understanding tinnitus is the first step in managing it. Whether it’s caused by prolonged noise exposure, earwax buildup, or other factors, there are ways to reduce its impact.

An International Baccalaureate education helps future-proof students, giving them the tools to think critically in a changing world.
We all want to raise kids who can navigate a complex world, wade through online noise and be comfortable with change.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) programme has been futureproofing children for ages, and in today’s world, IB may be education’s superfood.
Glenlyon Norfolk School (GNS) in Victoria is one of the very few IB continuum schools in Canada, offering IB from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. Angie Girard has been part of GNS for 32 years and the IB Diploma Coordinator for 12 years. She marvels at how IB develops critical thinking, an essential 21stcentury skill.
“The IB curriculum takes an inquiry-based approach,” she says. “Rather than providing students with answers, it’s about giving them the tools to ask the questions.”
IB students actively construct their understanding of the world instead of passively receiving
information. This process makes them adaptable, resilient and resourceful.
“It’s a great advantage in life to be able to think through something, consider it from different angles and be thoughtful about it,” Girard says. “We often hear students say, ‘IB forced me to develop the skills to actually think for myself and to think on my feet.’”
Gina Simpson has been teaching the Middle Years Programme (MYP) at GNS for over 20 years, and has been the coordinator of curriculum planning for the last 9. She says IB promotes a global mindset and nurtures social responsibility.
“Another part built into IB is service as action,” she says. “The idea is that students are inspired in some way by what they learn and are moved to go out into their local community to take action.”
In Grade 6, students study the UN global goals and examine international issues, then choose one goal and explore local impact opportunities.
“It’s about connecting what they learn in the classroom with the world outside,” Simpson says. “They’re actually working with it
and saying, ‘I’m studying gender equality in the classroom. I’m going to go and look at how I can support a women’s shelter in the local community.’”
The end goal is to prepare students to be responsible, engaged citizens who can navigate different environments with respect and understanding.
“When they leave GNS, they take with them life skills that go way beyond academics,” Girard says. “They go out into the world set up not just to survive, but to thrive.”
