Seed shortage may come in 2010 The Baltimore Sun

Will there be a shortage of vegetable seeds for gardeners in 2010? It is possible, says Barbara Melera, owner of the oldest seed house in the country, D. Landreth Seeds, formerly of Baltimore and now of New Freedom, Pa. Landreth recently published a beautiful and historical catalog to celebrate 225 years of teaching gardeners how to garden. After back to back good years – 2008s salmonella scares and 2009s poor economy send homeowners into the garden to grow their own food – you might expect a backslide in seed sales, Melera says. New gardeners get discouraged or bored. But, she says, “In 2009, we had the worst growing season in 50 years.” Rain and disease destroyed crops and with them, the seeds for next year’s garden. “Onion sets. And a cucumber seed shortage,” she predicts. “We are being told that the cucumber harvest was catastrophic, attacked late in the season by woolly mildew. There was fruit, but no viable seeds inside. “We are being told that many, many

varieties simply won’t be available.” Likewise, Europe had a terrible harvest this year, and Europeans purchased much of their produce from the United States, taking with it the seeds. And, as further proof that we are in a global marketplace, Europeans and Australians have taken a fancy to eating sprouts – tons of sprouts. “When you grow vegetables just to get the sprouts, nothing gets to fruit. And they are consuming gigantic quantities of seeds just for the purpose of sprouts.” Word of possible shortages must be leaking out, Melera says, because retailers are telling her they had their best December in years. It is certainly true that vegetable gardeners are ordering seeds earlier and earlier, but Melera says she thinks it is more likely that gardeners are acting out of fear of shortages. It would be a shame, she says, if the young gardeners for whom it is becoming a passion should face such a setback.

Add to your stairs

Step Up in Style

Carpet Squares Aubrey McClintock of Old Forge, Pa., installed zebra-print Flor tiles on the stairs in her 90-year-old home. One square can be cut to cover two stair treads. Flor carpet tiles are available in different colors, patterns and textures at Elements of Green in Kansas City and Lowe’s. Decals Instead of a carpet runner, Fresh Home magazine shows how to use removable wall decals for stairs. They used the Neu Tree design from www.modernwallgraphics.com ($60 for a 7-foot decal available in 40 colors). If necessary, use a fine paintbrush and an oil-based paint in the same color as the decal to touch up any joints or fill out the design. The best thing about decals? They can be peeled off without damaging surfaces and reapplied elsewhere.

Make your stairs shine By Stacy Downs McClatchy Newspapers

Your home should rise up to greet you, lifestyle experts are forever preaching. Sprucing up the stairway is a simple start. “Stairs are architectural details that should be played up,” says Karol Nickell, editor in chief of Fresh Home magazine. “But they often get ignored because they’re passageways. People forget that they’re the transition between the public and private places in the home, which makes them important.” To say Patricia Shackelford of Kansas City, Mo., felt uplifted when a candy-colored striped runner recently spiffed up her stairway is an understatement. Here’s what she wrote in her blog, Mrs. Blandings: “Is it possible that the installation of a carpet runner would offer such joy? Can you imagine your heart skipping, not a beat, but just skipping?” So how does she feel about her stairs now, after her three sons, ages 7, 10 and 13, as well as the family’s boxer, Rosie, have trounced up and down them hundreds of times in one of the snowiest winters in history? “The same,” Shackelford says with a satisfied smile. “It’s wearing well.” However, she concedes no one wears their shoes in the house, which is

why the cotton runner still looks new. In a shoe-wearing house, wool takes a better beating, especially in high-traffic areas. Shackelford found the two Dash & Albert rugs she used as runners at Stuff in Kansas City. It took installers about half a day to staple them in place to the stairs. The project cost about $750. Nickell says there are other ways to add a little springtime to our steps. Painting the risers – not the treads – a contrasting color is a smart choice. “It would also improve safety because it’s easier to see each step as you go up,” she says. The skirting of the staircase in front entrances, often painted the same color as the molding, also could be painted a new color. “You could even stencil in a traditional support bracket and paint it a bright color like lime green,” she says. “And when you get sick of it, you could just paint over it.” Another idea Nickell likes is using carpet tiles, which are easy for do-it-yourselfers to install. “There are so many colors and textures, and they’re very low profile and flexible to work with,” she says. “You could almost make a colorful, modern patchwork quilt with your stairs.” Aubrey McClintock of Old Forge, Pa., and her husband,

Kristi Ritter Summer Stair

Paint Stair risers can be painted a contrasting color, a smart safety choice too because they stand out. “You could even use turquoise, the color of 2010,” says Karol Nickell, editor in chief of Fresh Home magazine. “It’s a beautiful color because it’s earthy and stylish.” Step up the look of your stairs with mosaic tiled steps like the ones created by Casey Simmons in her home. (Tammy Ljungblad/Kansas City Star)

Lee, swapped out their scuffed rubbery stair treads for zebra print Flor carpet tiles. “It was a huge change right away,” she says, who shows crafting and home projects on her blog, A Daily Obsession. “I really wanted animal prints. I have a thing for them. They’re not over the top, but they’re fun.” “I like that if they get really gross, it’s easy to pull them and change them out,” McClintock says. It was a fairly inexpensive change, too, about $100. Casey Simmons of Kansas City took tiling her stairs several steps further. About eight years ago, she installed mosaics of tile samples, shells and river rocks from vacations as well as

broken dishes to the treads of the stairs leading up from the lower level. “I love them,” says Simmons, co-owner of Stuff. “When I’m talking on the phone I’ll go and sit on the rocks. It created a nice nook. They feel great underfoot, too, like those pebbly massagers.” Simmons spent 6 to 12 hours on each step in yoga-like positions to accomplish the elaborate mosaics. She knows the eclectic, beach bungalow-like look of hers isn’t for everyone. “Someone could do it in one color palette or one style of tile, and it would be sophisticated,” she says. “And at the same time, personal.”

Tiles Casey Simmons of Kansas City gathered found objects, including blown fuses, to create works of art on the stairs of her home. She also incorporated tiles on the treads that friends and family wrote to her to commemorate her 30th birthday. She suggests doing a sample board or stepping stone of mosaic tiling before tackling the stairs because it was a project that took dozens of hours. Other ways to spiff up your stairway • Change out art – Patricia Shackelford of Kansas City took on a craft project for her stairwell, painting canvases two equal colors and using inexpensive frames. • Improve the lighting – Use a wall sconce or lights that mount to the risers. • Paint the walls – Shackelford’s walls are sunshine yellow, making it feel warm and welcoming like spring, even on a cold winter’s day.

Warm soil makes happy plants this season

Carol O’Meara Colorado State University Extension

After an endless wait of weeks, the peas have finally sprouted in my garden. It had taken long enough that I’d begun to fret, worried that they had rotted in the ground. No amount of standing over them, tapping my foot and demanding action was going to get them to sprout. They weren’t stubborn; they were chilly. Though our days are warm, our soils aren’t, so if you’re thinking of rushing the season, warm the soil before you plant. Row covers, plastic or water walls are ways to speed your garden from seed to table. Floating row covers, made of a light fabric, can raise soil temperatures 1 to 3 degrees. Though this doesn’t seem dramatic, if you sow your seeds directly into the ground, then tuck them in with this cloth, they’ll sprout sooner and you won’t be left wondering if you’ve destroyed your crop before the summer got going, which is when decent gardeners kill their plants. Cocooned under the cloth, radishes, lettuce, spinach, peas, Chinese cabbage, beets, carrots, turnips and parsnips stay warm, germinating sooner than they would if left out in the cold. Weigh down the edges of the cloth so wind doesn’t blow it to Kansas, and leave enough slack to let the seedlings lift it as they grow. If you’re popping in seedlings, warm the soil before you plant with sheet plastic laid across the ground. Use 6 mil or greater grade of black

plastic, secured to the ground with wire Ushaped earth staples. Though clear plastic warms faster, the see-through covering acts like a cozy greenhouse for weeds, which grow nicely under the tenting. Let the soil warm under plastic for two weeks, then check the temperature with a soil thermometer to see if your ground is ready for seedlings. In many cases the plastic should be removed before planting, but if you want to use it as a season-long mulch, be sure it’s UV-resistant. Under the tender mercy of our sun, nonUV resistant plastic becomes brittle and shatters over summer, and you’re left vacuuming the garden like an obsessive cleaner. If you shopped early and brought home a few plants, don’t fall victim to our fickle spring weather and plant tomatoes, peppers or eggplant without protection. Sleeve them with water walls to keep them from getting nipped by frost. These water-filled frost protectors are a great way to keep chilly nights and snow squalls from ruining your dreams of summer bounty. The trick to true success with water walls is to warm the soil before you plant your seedlings; keeping their bottoms as warm as their tops means they’ll grow with enthusiasm. Set up your walls one week before you pop those plants in the ground, to raise soil temperature. Remember to remove the water walls after

frost date, so plants can grow without a collar of hot plastic in the summer. Upcoming Plant Sales Planning your plant purchases? Check out the Loveland Garden Club’s annual plant sale fundraiser on May 8 from 8 a.m. to noon at the All Saints Episcopal Church, 3448 N. Taft Ave. in Loveland. Perennials, annuals, vegetables and herbs are ready for your garden, and if you’re unsure which is best, ask one of the Colorado Master Gardeners staffing the event. Proceeds go to community causes, such as local tree planting, scholarships, education and donations to other nonprofits. Novice vegetable gardeners planning on planting a garden should check out Vegetable Gardening for Beginners on May 1 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the extension office in Longmont, 9595 Nelson Road. Offered by the Colorado Master Gardeners of Boulder County, this primer for growing food covers the basics of choosing a location, preparing the site, variety selection, troubleshooting and harvesting. Fee for the class is $20; pre-registration required. Call 303-678-6238 to sign up. Good credit opens the door to home-buying success With many signs pointing to the beginnings of a recovery in the housing market, potential homebuyers can still find plenty of selection, low prices and low interest rates. If you’re thinking of buying a home, now might be the right time, but before you contact a real estate agent or apply for a mortgage, your top priority should be checking your credit report to see if your credit is in good shape. Credit – specifically misuse and misunderstanding of credit – spurred the housing crisis, many experts agree. The consequences have included tighter standards from lenders and the need for borrowers to better understand how to use credit wisely. Interest rates remain low and those with good credit will be better positioned to take advantage of the opportunities currently available in this unique

housing market. A good credit report and score can open doors for you in the real estate world, and empower you to secure the best loan and terms possible before you ever tour a single house. Being preapproved for an affordable mortgage can help you move quickly to secure a deal when you find the home of your dreams. If you’ve already assessed your finances to determine how much mortgage you can afford, you’re ready for the next step – making sure your credit is in top shape to help you get the best possible loan. Understanding your Score and What it Means Lenders consider your credit score and your current credit report when deciding whether or not you’re a good credit risk. Your credit score is a number generated by using statistical models that factor in elements from your credit report. The number can change when information on your credit report

With Detailed Information, Multiple Photos & Virtual Tours,

We all make shopping mistakes, but why live with them for the rest of your life? Turn past years’ bargains into cold hard cash right now by putting your old stuff on consignment. Consignment stores are popping up everywhere, because people know that they can find great bargains on quality used clothing for themselves and their families. The flip side of buying consignment is selling on consignment, which is a great way to clear your closet clutter and make a little money in the process. So how do you do it? Start by pulling each item from your closet one at a time, and separate into piles based on the following criteria: • You love it and you wear it faithfully, and you like how it looks on you. • You hate it and never wear it. In fact it doesn’t fit, or you bought it because it was a bargain. • You like it and wear it fairly often, or it’s a key player in a few outfits. • This pile is for undecided items – those that don’t really fit into the other piles.

The information on your report comes from creditors, public records and other reliable sources, which report it to the credit bureaus through automated processes. Because your credit report changes every time you use credit, it pays to enroll in a credit monitoring product. Websites such as FreeCreditReport.com make it easy to track both your score over time and monitor your credit report, ensuring you know what’s on your report before a potential lender looks at it. Buying a home is likely the largest investment you’ll ever make – one that will impact your credit for many years to come. Before you jump into the process of applying for a loan to buy a home, it pays to understand credit, review your report and know your score.

Dear Helaine and Joe: My great-grandfather purchased an urn in Japan around 1895. It stands 36 inches tall, and the decoration is detailed. There are no markings. It has never been formally appraised, but an appraiser casually said it is not a reproduction. He also said there are so many reproductions of this type of ware that the originals are only slightly more valuable than the repros. The urn is in good condition. What can you tell us about it? – J.Z.

Dear J.Z.: We are more than a little flabbergasted by what the appraiser had to say. Almost without exception, originals are significantly more valuable than reproductions, and we are surprised that a professional appraiser would make such a statement. Anyway, let us first discuss what this object is and how it was made. In one of the pictures, we noticed a cream-colored edge around the ruffled rim, and this strongly suggests a piece of Japanese Satsuma. Satsuma is an important type of Japanese pottery first made in the early 17th century at kilns located in the Kagoshima prefecture, on the island of Kyushu captured by the lord of Satsuma after he had tried (and failed) to conquer Korea – cre-

ated the pottery. Using local white clay, these potters produced light, porous semiporcelain that was a soft beige (or cream) color, with ivory/brown undertones. The glaze on Satsuma pieces is crackled – or covered with a fine network of shallow cracks. These cracks occur because the glaze shrinks more than the pottery itself in the kiln. It is our opinion that this particular piece was probably manufactured in either Tokyo or Yokohama, not made in villages associated with the lord of Satsuma or in Kyoto. It is attractive, but not of the best artistic quality. The 1895 date seems early to us, and unless there is documentation, we feel this piece is circa 1915 or 1920. In any event, such a large piece is highly desirable. This piece would be more valuable if it were one of a pair or if it had a lid. Lacking these enhancements, however, it has an insurance replacement value of $1,600 to $2,200. Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson are the authors of “Price It Yourself (HarperResource, $19.95). Vignettes bring a home to life

April 24, 2010 Here are seven tips for creating striking vignettes in your home: 1. Build your vignette around a light source. If your arrangement of objects is in a dark corner, it won’t be seen and the effect will be lost. Try building your vignette around a lamp. 2. Choose objects to support the style and theme of your room. If your room is formal, a symmetrical design works best. If the room is casual, asymmetrical groupings are better.

One of the easiest ways to add designer zing to your home is to arrange objects into vignettes, or groupings, atop tables and shelves. Think of it as creating a beautiful still life. You can make a vignette on top of any flat surface: dresser, table, bookshelf, countertop or window ledge. You can use vases, mirrors, plants, greenery, photos or other personal belongings to create a mood, just like a set designer does for a film or play.

3. Use color in your vignette to coordinate a room. Use items in shades that complement the dominant color in a room. Silk flowers or artificial fruit are good ways to introduce color. 4. Display objects in odd numbers. Place several objects of similar shape, size and color together in odd numbers for maximum impact. Groups of three or five work well and are stronger visually than a group of two or four. 5. Vary the height of objects. Use

small pedestals to elevate items. Try stacking books to create a platform for smaller objects. 6. Stick to a theme. Group candles, for example, or family vacation photos. 7. Create depth. Place objects from the back of the flat surface to the front instead of in a straight line the length of the surface. Placing objects atop a mirror is an easy way to create a sense of dimension. – HGTV
