There were 12 recorded crashes at the location between 2016 and 2020, one of which involved a pedestrian being seriously injured, he said. The proposed location of the crossing provides “optimal distance” between intersections and for access to the nearby school and busThestop.AT staff emphasised no decision on the project had been made and they were there to listen to people’s concerns and feedback. They were asked numerous questions by audience members including how the crossing would be constructed without causing traffic gridlock, if any of them used Pakuranga Road regularly, and what speed they wanted vehicles to travel across the raised crossing, amongAllenothers.said analysis is nearly complete on submissions with a feedback report to be published soon. The agency is considering the feedback provided for feasible design solutions.

Allen said key themes in the feedback were the plan would worsen congestion, it’s unnecessary as there’s a crossing at a nearby intersection, the raised crossing isn’t appropriate for the busy road, and the proposal doesn’t make sense.

About 90 per cent of the people who submitted feedback on a controversial plan to install a pedestrian crossing on a busy east Auckland road say it shouldn’t go ahead. That’s among the information revealed to the large crowd which turned out to a recent public meeting on the issue staged at Farm Cove Intermediate School by Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown. Auckland Transport (AT) is proposing to install a raised crossing with traffic signals on Pakuranga Road immediately west of Grammar School Road and Johns Lane. The work includes moving the existing bus stop and shelter from east of the Johns Lane intersection to west of it, removing existing bus bays and moving bus stops into traffic lanes. A new pedestrian refuge crossing would be installed on Grammar School Road and the nearby kerb ramps on that road and Johns Lane would be upgraded. The $450,000 project has been met by outspoken opposition from locals and Brown, who’s labelled it “crazy”. Several AT officials fronted up to the public meeting on August 29 to hear directly from residents and share information on the project.

“Speed is the single largest factor in an accident’s outcome. A pedestrian hit by a car has a 95 per cent chance of death at 60kmh and an 80 per cent chance at 50kmh.”

AT road safety engineering manager Michael Brown outlined why the pedestrian crossing is proposed. The closest existing crossing facilities are 300 metres and 500m away from the site of the proposed crossing, Brown said. “The evidence is clear that people don’t want to walk those distances and they will start to take the risk of trying to make those dangerous decisions to cross the road at that location.”Hesaid there’s a high risk to people crossing the road as there are three traffic lanes in each direction.

Among them was Andrew Allen, the agency’s executive general manager of service delivery. He said more than 1200 submissions were received during the public feedback period and about 90 per cent of submitters opposed it.

The Crown alleges the four men were involved in a plan to split two large donations made to the National party in 2017 and 2018 into smaller amounts to avoid having to disclose the identity of the true donor or donors to the Electoral Commission, as legallyRoss, required.Zhang, and Colin Zheng each face two charges of obtaining by deception laid by the Serious Fraud Office. Joe Zheng faces one charge of obtaining by deception and one charge of providing false or misleading information. Zhang and the Zheng brothers also face charges, along with two men and a woman whose names are suppressed, over a donation made to the Labour Party at a fundraising art auction in 2017. Crown lawyer Paul Wicks QC delivered the prosecution’s closing argument in court on Monday. He said in May 2017 Ross attended a dinner with his wife Lucy Schwaner and Zhang and Colin Zheng. Zhang offered support to Ross at the dinner through Zheng, who translated, as Zhang speaks little English, Wicks said. In the following days Ross sent Colin Zheng a copy of the National Party Botany electorate bank account deposit slip. “It was clear from Ross’s messages he must have perceived disclosure of the donor’s name might be an issue,” Wicks told theHecourt.said Zheng made arrangements with seven friends and family members for them to act as donors to National. The treasurer of the National Party’s Botany electorate had testified Ross told him a $100,000 donation was coming from a function he’d taken part in. “The Crown says that shows Ross knew it was a bulk amount,” Wicks said. He said Colin Zheng talked with people about transferring money to National. Zheng told people their association’s chairman, which the Crown says refers to Zhang, needed to donate to National and did not want his name disclosed so he needed to split it into several lots, Wicks said. He said Ross sent a list of names and addresses of seven “transmitters”, or “sham donors”, to the party. “With the 2018 National Party donation, the Crown says Yikun Zhang was the true donor, or interests associated with Yikun Zhang,” Wicks said. “Yikun Zhang, Colin Zheng, and Joe Zheng worked with Ross to conceal the identity of the true donor. Ross knew who the true donor was but provided names of sham donors to the National Party.” Wicks also pointed to Ross’s interview with police in October 2018 after Ross made public allegations about thenNational leader Simon Bridges and election donations. Wicks said Ross told police he’d received a list of people’s names from an agent of the donor because the donor didn’t speak English. “That is clear acknowledgement Ross knew or believed Yikun Zhang was the true donor.” He said Ross delivered a media statement in October 2018 in which he said a $100,000 donation to National he’d collected had been split into smaller amounts below the $15,000 threshold and was not disclosed to the Electoral Commission.Rossspoke to news media outside Wellington Central Police station after making his complaint against Bridges. Wicks said Ross stated then that when the $100,000 donation had come in it was “split up”.Defence lawyers in the trial will make their closing arguments this week.

The Crown has highlighted multiple statements made in late 2018 by former Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross as what it alleges is evidence of his involvement in wrongdoing relating to election donations. Ross is on trial before Justice Ian Gault at the Auckland High Court alongside businessmen Yikun Zhang, Shijia (Colin) Zheng and Hengjia (Joe) Zheng.

Futuristic play poses ethical questions

By CHRIS HARROWELL Howick Little Theatre’s next stage offering poses ethical questions about how far people are willing to go in the name of science. Its telling of award-winning Kiwi playwright Gary Henderson’s dramatic play Shepherdis directed by Nathan Hey and opens on September 10. Hey says the play is set in Fiordland in the South Island in the not-too-distant future. “There’s been a new scientific discovery that’s allowed a breakthrough in the medical world and it focuses on one of the farms producing the animals this medicine is based on, so it’s looking at the ethics of that. It’s a fantastic play and it’s one of the most challenging and intriguing ones I’ve ever read.” He says despite the futuristic and scientific elements of the story, the audience will be able to keep up. “There are multiple layers to it. It’s got something for over-thinkers and for people who just want to enjoy some good entertainment. “It’s more of a dramatic story and there are quite a few action sequences. There are also a few laughs but it’s definitely not a comedy.”Thelast play of Henderson’s staged by Howick Little Theatre was Peninsula, which Hey says people “raved about”. Something that makes Shepherd different is its use of multi-media and the way it blends film and stage, he says. “It’s pretty special. When I look for plays to direct, I look for talent and something different from the norm. There’s commentary on the ethics of big pharmaceutical companies and what lines they’re willing to cross for a buck. “I think it’s a really good story to get people thinking. I don’t think this case [the plot] could ever happen but, that said, who actually knows? “We are discovering new species all the time so it’s potentially possible.” He says the cast has seven actors who he describes as a “great group and they’re very hard-working”.Heypredicts local theatre lovers will be disappointed if they don’t get along to see Shepherd“It’ssomething different because we typically do a comedy and then a romantic comedy, and this is breaking new ground which is really exciting. Hopefully, in future, we do more shows like this.”

COUNCIL

“It’s very important the mayor has the [right] skill set and leadership style, because you’re one vote on council. You need to work with all the other councillors around the table very constructively, whatever their view, to make decisions people respect. “You need to get high performance from councillors and council-controlled organisations and you have to be able to work with the Government of the day to get our fair share of resources.” Kampkes said his campaign was focusing on the issue of housing intensification. It’s an issue that’s “going to affect seniors seriously”, he said. Brown said one of the city’s biggest problems is “unfinished, behind-time, over-expensive infrastructure projects everywhere”. He said existing major projects needed to be completed before others, such as light rail to Auckland Airport, were tackled. Brown pointed to issues around drainage and flooding in east Auckland which “should have been fixed years and years ago”. “Now that we’ve got money set aside for global warming, I think I’m going to use it for mitigating [flooding] for those poor people stuck in those houses.”

“So why are we wasting $15b? This whole city has quite a good skeleton for a rail system. “Having lived in London I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t.” Lehmann’s opening remarks focused on crime, saying over the years he’s seen Auckland going “down and down and down”. “We’ve got problems with crime, with ram-raids, and it’s like the ‘Wild West’ out there sometimes. You’ve got shootouts in the street.” He said one reason for high crime rates was the way the city’s been run since the super-city amalgamation in 2010. Lehmann said he wanted to implement free bus rides and a ratesBeckfreeze.said she’s developed policies relating to transport and congestion, crime and housing and infrastructure. She said there needs to be a much more efficient way of managing the council.

Auckland Transport’s proposal to install a speed bump on Pakuranga Road has been met with overwhelming opposition from the local community, with many turning up to a public meeting I hosted last week to voice their concern. There really is no better word to describe this idea: crazy. Pakuranga Road is one of the busiest roads in New Zealand carrying 40,000 vehicles every single day – installing a speed bump here is akin to putting one on the motorway.Thereality is that this proposal is totally unnecessary. There are already signalised crossings only a couple of hundred metres away from the existing bus stop, and the number of people who would even use a crossing in this location is veryPakurangafew. Road is already heavily congested, with long travel times that have frustrated local commuters for decades. It has taken years of battling with AT to get projects like the Eastern Busway and Reeves Road Flyover funded and finally underway to improve things, and the last thing we need right now is something that will only slow it all back down. What’s more is that this proposal is estimated to cost close to half a million dollars, an inordinate amount of money for something that will benefit no one and instead make things worse for all commuters.Themessage to Auckland Transport at my recent public meeting was clear – cancel this proposal before it’s too late. We have already seen examples in Pakuranga of failed experiments like this which only serve to cause headaches for locals just trying to get around their community. They also cost ratepayers a lot of money, both to install and then remove once it’s clear it isn’t actually helping anyone. I will continue to fight AT on this ridiculous proposal in the hope that they see some sense and focus their energy on projects that will make life easier for east Aucklanders, not harder.  Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga

Goff is not standing for re-election at the Auckland Council elections being held next month. Taking part in the debate staged by the Grey Power Howick Pakuranga and Districts Association at Howick Presbyterian Church on August 26 were Wayne Brown, Viv Beck, Craig Lord, Ted Johnston, John Lehmann, and Michael Kampkes. Each candidate began by introducing themselves and explaining why those present should vote for them.Lord said he wants to overhaul the council’s preferred contractor procurement system. “We need to get local contractors working local [so] we pay those contractors directly instead of having to come from the other side of the city to fix your footpath.

Imoved to Howick 33 years ago. I became involved in the community when I was elected to the Cockle Bay School Board of Trustees. During this time I organised the school galas and set up the After School Care and holiday programmes. I was the establishment Board Chair of both Somerville Intermediate and Botany Downs Secondary College. The boards were responsible for the construction and resourcing of these schools. This year I took on the role as Chairperson of The Friends of Mangemangeroa after the sad passing of Allan Riley, the previous Chairperson. I became a Howick 175 Ambassador so I was able to help the committee of 175 Howick to mark this anniversary as part of the history of the Howick area. There are some wonderful activities planned for this anniversary and it is great to be involved. A memory for me was when we were building and resourcing Somerville Intermediate. The road speed down Somerville Road was 100 km/h. The board considered this speed too high for a road where students would be leaving the school grounds. I worked with Ross Robertson, the local MP at the time. Before the school was opened, the speed limit was changed to 70km/h and then to 50 km/h.My name is on the wall outside Botany Downs Secondary College marking the Establishment Board and staff of the school. Howick has had a lot of changes over the 33 years I have lived here, but the community has always kept its village community atmosphere. Stockade Hill where the annual Anzac service is held and has the Christmas lights on the tree each December, plus Mangemangeroa Reserve, which has had native tree planting over the last 20 years, are some of the venues enjoyed by the community. We also have the Saturday markets in the village that are well supported and a lot of fun, plus all the activities put on for local entertainment. I enjoy being part of the Howick Community.

Enjoying Howick Skelton.

The ultimate aim of the trust is to pro vide a respite centre. Wendy told the Times that about 20,000 New Zealanders have ME and around 25 per cent are severely affected. “I am so grateful that I can get out and about, promoting this fundrais ing dinner for such a worthwhile cause,” Val says. “On one occasion, I was reduced to tears as a lady over heard me talking about ME and offered a gift basket from Simplify My Home.” Other wonderful offers of vouchers and gift baskets have come from Good Home, Basalt, Lily Whyte, New World Howick, Fresh Choice Half Moon Bay, CACI Howick, 101 Home, Cinnamon Brown and multiple organisations from St“IHeliers.loveHowick and several shops have supported us generously by taking part in this advertisement, and providing me with awesome auction items for the charity dinner. Last year’s dinner at The Lounge was a huge success and we know this dinner will also be wonderful.” The charity dinner will be on Wednesday September 21 at the Lounge in Howick. There will be brilliant live music from Brian Paladin and Christina Bevan. To purchase tickets, email Val Lott at lotts@xtra.co.nz or phone Val on 027 476 7003. With Maori Language Week just around the corner, Howick Library is hosting a Te Reo Maori for Beginners class on Friday September 16 from 10.30am-11.30am. The free session will be of basic Te Reo pronunciation with Whaea Taini Drummond.MaoriLanguage Week (September 12-19) is an annual celebration that aims to inspire New Zealanders to speak the Maori language proudly. The celebration is part of a larger effort to revitalise the Maori Language.

Val Lott’s desire to organise anoth er charity dinner for Rest Assured Respite Trust (RART) comes from her own suffering of fibromyalgia, pain ful arthritis, and from meeting and form ing a close friendship with the Trust chair, Wendy Mathews. Wendy has been bed-bound for many years suffering with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME. “Despite Wendy’s poor health, I’ve never ceased to be amazed at her incredible resilience to push through helping others with CFS/ME,” Val says. RART is a registered charity looking to provide practical support to those with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia (FM).

Williamson says, “If we don’t strenuously protect this firewall on council spending then there’s a plethora of other needy and worth while causes that ratepayers’ money could be thrown at. Why does the council not fund health care services or solve child pov erty? The answer is simple. These are truly deserving causes, but it is wrong for ratepayers’ money to be spent on never-ending whims and wishStewartlists. says, “A lot of what was being proposed just sounds like more working groups and reviews and reports. We think the time for these mechanisms has well passed.“Councillors do have a role. That role is to advocate strongly on behalf of our communities. To strongly bring to the attention of our central government represent atives the severity of the crime wave and demand that action be taken to address the problems and not just pay lip service to them.

It takes two traffic control trucks, two works truck, three drivers, one supervisor, two workers and 300 orange cones to fix a pot hole. They arrive on site, it’s morning tea time. “If crime needs addressing, and we most strongly believe it does, then it’s the Government and all its relevant agencies that should be addressing the issue. If cen tral government is failing to do so adequately, then voters have the ability to hold them accountable at next year’s general election. “It should not fall to the already overburdened ratepayers to stump up a second time and fund solu tions to crime. Council should stick to its core role and functions and should not wander off into domains that are the responsibili ties of central government.

Having attended the public meet ing on the proposed raised cross ing on Pakuranga Road, a number of things stood out for me. Firstly, the school hall was filled which obviously indicated that the issue was indeed a topic that very many people were passionate about.Secondly, and to their credit, the members of Auckland Transport (AT) who fronted seemed genu inely interested to hear the many and varied reasons why virtually the whole audience were against the proposal and some interesting points were raised that both they and many in the audience had not even considered. It remains to be seen whether the valid arguments put forward are actually taken into account or whether their stock answers, at times, hid the fact that they intend to go ahead anyway. What was evident was that AT, in their planning, despite having already employed consultants and the like, seem not to have factored in such things as the Reeves Road flyover and the enormous housing intensification that will only put further pressure on a road that is already in gridlock many times of the day. In many ways, AT should be trying to hasten and smooth the flow of traffic, rather than hinder travel and slow everything down. Ideas such as a walking over bridge – if another crossing is a necessity – were somehow brushed over as were the crash figures that, before this proposal broke, showed an entirely differ ent picture than the figures being presented to us today.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS8 — Times, Wednesday, September 7, 2022 www.times.co.nz

Next meeting Sunday, September 11, at 1.30pm. Fencible Lounge, 25 Uxbridge Road, Howick. Guest speaker Allan Benson will talk about the trials and tribulations of growing miltonias and odon toglossums. Visitors and new members welcome.

Stewart and Williamson say, “During our campaign we have met people living on fixed incomes who are struggling to pay their day-to-day costs. They do not deserve, nor can they afford, their skyrocketing rates to be used for something that central govern ment is already funded to do. “While the city is in huge debt, paying hundreds of millions in interest costs, with ratepayers asked to pay more each year, now is not the time to be advocating yet more money spent. If elected, we commit to fighting rates rises, and we are totally opposed to funding all sorts of extraneous issues.”

Letters should not exceed 200 words and should carry the name, residential address and contact telephone number of the author.

All in all, thanks to the tight con trol on the meeting by (Pakuranga MP) Simeon Brown, I felt the meet ing was quite informative and we can only hope that the members of AT who were present now have a better understanding of how ridic ulous, impractical and disruptive this proposal would be. It once again shows that, often, a university education and fancy title is no match for boots on the ground and local knowledge but we hold our breath and wait!

Councillor Sharon Stewart and former Pakuranga MP Maurice Williamson, who are also standing on a joint ticket, sought a right of reply.Stewart and Williamson say, “We all feel the pain and suffering that crime is causing in our com munity. Every day we meet with people who have been directly impacted by the behaviour of these thugs. We, like everyone else in our community, want something done about it and we want it done now. There’s not a single candidate from any side of the political spec trum that is happy with just how out of control crime has become. “But there’s a significant differ ence between our views and those of other candidates on what role a city council should play. “Taxpayers already pay billions of dollars to a government whose prime job is the safety of the community. They use that huge amount of money to fund police, the justice system, the courts, youth justice programmes, men tal health strategies and facilities, and indeed the education system.

HOWICK ORCHID SOCIETY

At the public meeting held on August 29 with representatives from Auckland Transport, it was evident that they had little knowl edge or experience of travelling on Pakuranga Road. Their main concern was for the safety of pedestrians rather than for motorists. One wonders if the real reason is to force commuters to use public transport. However, a little research would show that the existing crossing at Glenmore Road is beneficial for both pedes trians and motorists and another one is surplus to requirements. When pedestrians cross Pakuranga Road at Glenmore Road, they stop the flow of two lanes of traffic heading towards the motor way. This allows a break for traffic to enter from that intersection into the inside lane of Pakuranga Road and move across into the outside lane without having to merge with two other lanes immediately. This is a safe outcome for both pedes trians and motorists. If a raised crossing is con structed a short distance away, three lanes of traffic will be stopped and the ensuing dash to merge into one lane in order to turn left at the bottom of the hill will cause chaos. Reducing the speed limit will not solve this dilemma. Pakuranga Road’s rela tively accident-free record will no longer exist and gridlock will be theAllresult.we ask is that Auckland Transport does its homework and realises the futility of their proposal. Preservation of our natural environment can be achieved by working alongside our councillors to ensure sufficient funding is allocated to address the issues, not defer the issues. They will explore opportunities for more innovative ways to bring forward the delivery of quality community facilities and community-led initiatives, such as community gardens and the activation of our parks and reserves. From there on it was a constant juggle between school and hip hop for Tate, who is also heavily involved in the dance programme at Pakuranga College. “It was a bit of work learning the routines and then practicing for Hip Hop International New Zealand, the local competition,” Tate says. After claiming placings with both Swagganauts and Yung ID, Tate was on his way to worlds. “Worlds took place in mid-August, so for most of the July school holidays we were putting in intensive hours training. Often we rehearsed from 10am-9pm at night. It was a lot, but winning two silvers, it was worth it.” Despite his success in dance Tate wants to pursue chemistry at university next year. “I’d like to work as a research pharmacist. Dance has been an amazing opportunity for me, but the competition is fierce. It will always be a hobby though. I’m getting into choreographing for younger hip hop dancers now; I’m definitely not stepping away completely.”

CRIME Arrest after Flat burglaryBush Pakuranga College student Tate Miller took the dancing world by storm at a hip hop championship in Arizona, collecting two silver medals with his dance crews. Tate recently returned from the World Hip Hop Championships in the United States (Times, August 15) where he took second with Identity Dance Company crews Swagganauts and YungSwagganautsID. competed in the varsity category, comprising high school-age participants, while Yung ID contested the junior/varsity mega crew section for up to 40 intermediate and high school-age dancers. Identity is recognised as one of the best hip hop dance companies in New Zealand, and Tate had high hopes when he auditioned earlier this year. “I went in and learned the dances, then auditioned in front of a panel,” Tate says. “It was a nerve-wracking wait, so I was stoked to be selected for the two varsity teams, especially Swagganauts, which only has nine members.”

acleans College continues to prove it is the golfing school to beat in New Zealand, taking out the New Zealand Boys’ Secondary Schools Championship for the third time in the last fourKingsevents.College took out the girls’ event comfortably. The Macleans College side of Stephen Liu, Daniel Ko and Samuel Ding combined for four-under-par to win by 11 shots over St Peters. Kings College took out the bronze. The Macleans team was in control for the majority of the event and held the overnight lead courtesy of Liu’s three under 68 and Ko’s one-under 70. In Friday’s final round, they sealed the deal with Liu’s two over 73 and Ko’s three under 68. Kings College’s girls team began the final round second behind the tournament favourite Pinehurst. On the opening day, Rianne Li and Amy Han had the counting scores, shooting 74 and 75. On Friday, Grace Zhan chimed in, carding an evenpar 73, which was matched by Amy Han. Kings beat Pinehurst by 10 strokes after an incredible second day at Pukekohe Golf Club.Meanwhile, the New Zealand Age Group Championships had some surprises. Liu’s first two rounds were good enough to hold a two-stroke lead in the under 19 boys’ division however that changed on the final day. Zack Swanwick (Napier) came from behind to win the New Zealand under 19 boys championship title. He started the final day five shots behind Liu. He got off to a slow start, playing his opening three holes in one over. He then found his groove, making three birdies on the trot from the fourth and would make the turn in a couple under. With Liu shooting one-over in his opening nine, Swanwick had cut the lead to two. After making seven pars and a birdie on the 17th, Swanwick took sole possession of the lead and stood on the final hole four shots in front. Ko (Howick Golf Club) finished just two shots behind Cooper Moore (Clearwater Golf Club) in the NZ under 16s boys championship while Lucia Lee (Pakuranga Golf Club) finished 9th in the NZ under 16s girls championship.
