An old home and cottage sledged down a Bucklands Beach slope onto a barge at the end of last year have made it safely to their new abode in Mangonui in the Far North. Margot Horton spied the buildings while visiting Mangonui at Christmas and sent this photo to the Times. Tim Lloyd and his crew of ex-commercial fishermen and handymen took ownership of the houses that were offered for free on condition they were
removed from their original site which has been subdivided into four sections. The larger, double storey house was built in 1988 and the early 1900s cottage behind it was built by Auckland magnate Alfred Buckland (for whom Bucklands Beach is named) for his daughter. The houses are now sited on Mr Lloyd’s farm near Doubtless Bay in Mangonui in Northland and he said he just intended to “live in them”.
Mum admits assault A
Howick woman who told media she was bashed for speaking Maori outside a bar in the early hours of New Year’s Day has pleaded guilty to assault. Shona Maiden admitted the charge when she appeared in the Manukau District Court on Monday. The court confirmed to the Times Maiden is scheduled to appear for sentencing on March 3. Police investigated an incident that occurred outside the 123 Karaoke bar in Meadowlands, Howick on Friday, January 1 and a decision was made to prosecute the 46-year-old female and a 43-year-old male. As part of the investigation, police viewed CCTV footage of the alleged incident. The version of events given by Maiden was not substantiated by the footage, police said in a statement last week. The police will not be making any further comment as the mat-
ter is before the courts. Last week the Times reported a Howick mum claimed she was assaulted on New Year’s Day after leaving a pub because she bid farewell in Maori, according to a media outlet. The NZ Herald reported that single mother Maiden was heading home after celebrating New Year’s Eve with friends at her local bar – 123 Casino Karaoke Bar, in Meadowlands – when she was assaulted. She told the newspaper she lost five teeth after she was punched repeatedly in the head by a man who angrily asked why she was speaking Te Reo. She repeated the claims on the television news as well. At the bar’s closing time, Ms Maiden, who is of European and Maori descent, claimed she said “ka kite ano” (see you later) to people standing outside. The mother-of-four said a man then

swore and yelled at her, questioning why a “palagi” (Samoan for European) would use such words, the Herald reported. Ms Maiden told reporters she responded, telling the man to “f*** off.” He then punched her several times, she claimed. Ms Maiden said the man who allegedly attacked her looked to be of Pacific descent. She went with a friend to Mid-
dlemore Hospital for treatment. “I’ve lost five teeth, my top plate is cracked ... my lip is out there, I can’t eat yet,” she told the paper. “I just burst into tears when I saw in the mirror that I had no teeth.” Her father, John Maiden, is upset at what happened to his daughter and says he wants something done about safety in the area around the bar, the NZ Herald reported. “I’m just bloody angry.” A man was killed in an alleged hit-and-run in the carpark outside the karaoke bar in October 2014. He was out celebrating his wife’s birthday. Father of three and popular sports coach Richard Samuels who lived at Maraetai Beach with his wife of 20 years, Alaina, and their children Rosalie, Dominic and Rueben – was reportedly hit by a car during a confrontation with another man in the carpark near the 123 Casino Karaoke Bar.
