olice are hunting a man who attacked a young woman and allegedly attempted to rape her in the early hours of Friday in Highland Park.

A very angry father of a girl who was out with the victim told the Times that the pair were heading home after a night out.

on social media said the attacker was a man of smallto-average build, Maori/ Pacific Islander, 30-40ish “shouted out from behind”.

“She ran and he chased her. She threw her phone at him once he was close. He tackled her and pinned her to the ground and kneeled over her, wrestling, hitting her head, nose and lip and contacting her private parts. He held her throat,” the post said.

The Howick Local Board is fighting the sale of 34 Moore Street and this week they saw their first victory.

On Tuesday night the local board put forward a proposal to retain the land and utilise the building that was once the old Howick Borough Council Chambers.

Board Members Jim Donald, Mike Turinsky, Adele White, John Spiller and Peter Young joined local board chair David Collings in presenting to the Finance and Performance Committee of Auckland Council.

After a strong case from board members, the committee has given the Howick Local Board a year to come up with a plan to upgrade and make use of the building.

The board would be expected to provide funding for various aspects of the proposal such as the ➤ Turn to Page 15 building upgrade.

ith only 17 sleeps to the Howick Santa Parade on Sunday December 9, the excitement is mounting.

As Bo Burns – who has taken over the organising of the iconic parade this year – deals with volunteers, activities, entertainment, participants, sponsors and after-event parties, somewhere in Howick College a team of students is working hard to design and prepare Santa’s sleigh.

Howick College teacher Nadiene Kyle is busy helping the students put the sleigh together in a big workshop.

The construction and mechanical technology teacher says students have been working on the sleigh since the beginning of the term.

Students then had to figure out the graphics of the product, the dimensions and how much material they would need in terms of sheets of ply.

The project has everyone in good cheer as it gradually takes shape.

Together, Santa’s helpers are working hard to put the sleigh together. It is the highlight of the parade as Santa will travel on it and make his way from Fencible Drive to Wellington Street and onto Picton Street and finish at Cook Street.

It took a while but after going undefeated the whole year, Cockle Bay Primary School’s 1st Xl emerged as Auckland Primary School Cricket Champions in the final at Eden Park last week.

To get that far, first the lads had to win the Howick Pakuranga Schools Tournament in April which they did by beating a strong Mellons Bay team in the final in April.

The side practised twice a week under the keen eye of

coach Michael Greenwood, himself a senior player with Howick Pakuranga. Then it was on to the regional finals where the boys played all the other group winners at the home of Auckland cricket, Eden Park, which was a big thrill for them.

Cockle Bay won all five round robin matches and prevailed over Campbells Bay in the final by 10 runs. According to Captain Spencer Carr, “It was a tough tournament all round but we had fun all day enjoying the cricket games and

were excited to be first in Auckland.”

The tournament was played on an 8-a-side basis with a 16 over format. Coach Greenwood says,”We’ve got a group of very talented boys here who will go a long way in cricket. “

Electric bikes’ star on the rise

E-bikes are making huge inroads in the recreational and adventure markets in NZ with growth rising from 1800 coming in for the whole of 2015 to some 2000 per month. Times editor Nick Krause takes a test ride to see what the fuss is about.

compromised). Wow. You cycle and, depending on the assistance on dial in, the silent motor kicks in without breaking a revolution on the pedals. Gloriously insane.

On my conventional bike the only time I even think about speed is on a downhill run, and that’s really more about braking and control.

This electric bike is amazing. I cranked it up as high as I could go and hit 43-46km/h. I switched to a commuter bike, a lot more comfy and more seamless on gear changes. Hit 38km/h before going back to the Magnum.

Speed obviously will clearly require more juice and impact your range.

That really doesn’t matter. It will have battery power to satisfy even the most adventurous.

Yes, 50-70km is eminently achievable on all our e-bikes.

Careful riding can see a single charge last 100km, rather than the usual 70km on a mid-range bike while 150km is possible on the store’s top-end bikes.

Even on my keenest day on my old bike, 30-40km was my limit (15-20km my usual).

And hills. Too easy. I’m riding like I’m on the flat.

So what’s the point? Am I even getting exercise, copping the burn?

The burn wasn’t there but I had a light sweat and breath marginally laboured – but I did push as hard and as fast as I could. I can live with this. Seriously.

But is this a passing phase? I don’t think so. The growth of e-bikes (according to transport consulting firm Via Strada estimates for NZ) show in 2015, an estimated 1833 e-bikes were brought into the country. In the year to May 2017, that number jumped to nearly 17,000.

This year, that number has increased to almost 2000 electric bikes per month.

“Another interesting statistic from overseas, one in three bikes sold in The Netherlands each year now is an e-bike,” says Cooke, whose Botany store has a range to suit everyone.

I balked at the prices I’d seen last year on some e-bikes. This seems to be settling down.

Naturally cost is higher (electric motor, battery and manufacturers need a better base bike to start with) but I could live with this range – perhaps not top-end (although I really would to try one out).

Electrify NZ stocks mid and high-end bikes, retailing from $2.5k to $8.5k.

“The benefits compared to a regular bike are you can ride without getting all hot and sweaty but you do still get some exercise,” says Cooke.

“It makes headwinds and hills irrelevant and, because it’s easier, you’ll tend to ride further and more frequently.”

But also, they’re fun, just exhilarating. They democratise bike riding, says Cooke.

“You don’t have to be a lycrawearing, life-long cyclist to enjoy an e-bike. You can e-bike to work in your suit or your dress, and you won’t need a shower or a change of clothes when you get there.

E-bikes can be as fast – or faster for some commuters, compared to a car sitting in traffic going nowhere.

Think Pakuranga Highway, Te Irirangi Drive, Mt Eden, the City, the North Western Motorway path.

ardcore mountain bikers, please look away. If you can’t resist reading on though, please keep an open mind – don’t be haters.

E-bikes have won me over, specifically the mountain bike I test rode, the Magnum Peak.

My leisure time is normally spent tramping but I do get the mountain bike out for some outdoor fun which has taken me to a lot of tracks all over the place.

Both of these pursuits get me outside and test me and my endurance and, certainly with tramping, can mean a few hours in the bush in the middle of nowhere.

And like mountain biking, they really test your legs (not to mention resolve) in hill country.

There is a good deal of masochism at play here. I know what I’m doing is going to hurt, perhaps for days, and yet it still gets me out there for a crack.

Out on my mountain bike, I’ve seen more of these e-bikes out there, whirring past me on inclines, me with a good, honest sweat going on as I clock up the ks. Surely that’s defeating the purpose, cheating even. My consternation had never wavered.

Enter Electrify NZ, the country’s biggest e-bike specialist founded by Michael Tritt, a regular cyclist and sustainability advocate for two decades (he was very high up in Greenpeace).

Their newest store – the eighth in the country – has opened in Botany and is owned by Anthony Cooke (a ninth store is to open on December 1 in Christchurch).

So I asked to test one of these abominations.

We rode a short 10km round trip from near Cascades Road bridge to Pakuranga College. The bikes are heavier than conventional bikes. Electric bikes are built more robustly to handle the extra power (a motor and battery) and the extra weight.

I did switch to zero assistance to get a feel of the bike. Pretty good balance I have to say and I rode under my own steam a couple of times (once on a gravel uphill climb). Couldn’t really feel the difference.

But I couldn’t help myself and opened up where I could (I wound right down on blind corners and where visibility was

t once rang loud and clear. The Pakuranga College School bell that dates back to 1881 was recently found covered in dirt, lying in a school shed.

The Head of Technology Faculty Gary Brinsden was intrigued and excited when he accidently discovered a piece of precious history that had once commanded a lot of attention.

He immediately got in touch with local historian Alan La Roche before he restored the copper bell to its former glory.

It now has a place of pride in the College staffroom.

“I have included on the plaque (placed below the bell) a very condensed version of the bell’s origin but I thought we should perhaps expand on this using the QR code. Being a technology teacher I couldn’t resist using a QR code, which is placed on the plaque,” he laughs. “The school was built at the cost of $420. The bell was ordered previous to that and hung around September 1881,” he says.

When contacted by Brinsden, La Roche had an interesting story to tell about the bell which is more than 100 years old.

According to the historian, the bell started life at the original Pakuranga School site, which was originally standing at the current St John Ambulance Station.

The original building is now stationed at the Howick Historical Village, although Pakuranga College still has the headmaster’s house at its present location – now Wairoa House.

“The bell then travelled to the school’s temporary location in the Howick District High School buildings, where Howick Intermediate School is today,” says Brinsden.

“When the students moved to the new

An email from La Roche says the Pakuranga School’s headmaster’s house was built in about 1879 for William Woodward, the first headmaster in Pakuranga School.

“He and his wife Laura were teachers at the school. Their children are well known. Alice was the first woman doctor in Auckland. William became Chief Justice in Samoa, and Constance married Lloyd Mandeno who invented the modern hot water cylinder. A hydro dam on the Waikato is named after him,” says La Roche.

“William Green lived in the headmasters House 1893 to 1914. The house was donated to the Howick Historical Society and when our secretary, Mrs. Karen Mirams, also on Pakuranga College Board managed to get the college to take it, we were relieved as we did not want it for our Howick Historical Village.”

First Virtual Village Timeless story of event in Howick loyalty, adventure Launching on November 30th

ast Health Trust and HBH Senior Living have initiated a ‘Virtual Village’ for seniors in Howick. Based on successful virtual villages overseas, the village is designed to support older people in the community to age well and overcome loneliness and social isolation.

The aim is to create new ways of meeting the needs of older people and to ensure that Howick is an age-friendly community where older people are supported to age well. In the words of Helen L’Orange who founded Sydney’s first Virtual Village, “It is a mutual organisation of people in neighbouring suburbs who support each other to enjoy life, stay healthy and remain in their own homes for as long as they can.”

ber, Paul Cressey believes it’s a great idea. “As our seniors population expands, the effects of loneliness and isolation on health and wellbeing will be reduced through connections and shared experiences within the virtual village.”

The Howick Virtual Village is holding a transport information morning for seniors on Friday 30th November 2018, from 10.30am to 12pm. It’s designed to help seniors understand their transport options if they can’t drive now or in the future.

acleans College’s recent junior production Wind in the Willows directed by Carleena Walsh, is a much-loved story of good friends, Mole, Ratty and Badger and their adventures exploring the Wide World and the Wild Wood - all the while trying to keep their good friend, Mr Toad, out of trouble.

The energetic and rather pompous Toad, is played by Nancy Qiang, a warm and confident Ratty, played by Marianne Reynecke, and the timid yet inquisitive Mole, played by Katya Davidson.

Ethan Lotter, who played a very wise Badger, delivered some absolute gems about living one’s best life.

Written by Kenneth Grahame and adapted for the stage by Mike Kenny Wind in the Willows had a cast of 34 students on

stage, and another 35 students had backstage roles – costume, hair and make-up, and front-ofhouse crews.

The cast, all Year 9 and 10 students, enjoyed exploring their characters, humans with animal characteristics in the timeless story of friendship, loyalty and

adventure.

Young actors were committed to bringing the story alive on the stage.

Year 10 student, Jaden Cheng, created all the sound effects ranging from keys locking the jail house door to car crashes and aeroplanes flying overhead.

oung Howick Hornets and NZ age-group rising star Luke Williams will be entered into this year’s AFL New Zealand National Draft and will join a raft of young talent who will be looking to book a spot in one of the four AFL New Zealand Premiership sides in 2019.

Williams, 17, from Pakuranga, was involved in a number of rounds in the 2018 AFL New Zealand Premiership playing as a development player which culminated in a dominant performance during the final round to earn himself the rising star award.

The former hooker started out playing AFL in the Secondary School Cup for Pakuranga College before joining the Howick Hornets in the Auckland AFL. Williams doesn’t shy away from a contest and is hard at the football, according to blog aflnz. co.nz.

“With plenty of talent, he will continue to develop into a handy midfielder in years to come.”

With a goal of making the NZ senior side, Williams has already represented New Zealand at Academy and U18 levels.

Having already retained an experienced midfield, he would fit in nicely at the Northern Suns where he could learn and develop under new captain Ben Hick.

Willilams’ favourite AFL team is the Eagles.

“I was given a supporters Guernsey from my brother who passed away a few years ago,” he told the Times.

“My favourite player is Dustin Martin who received the Golden

Boot and he is a Kiwi.”

And his goals? “To captain the U18s team for another victory in Melbourne and make the Senior NZ team.”

The National Draft will take place on Wednesday, November 28. The draft will be live via social media.

“Everybody that drives down [Pakuranga Road] knows that we’ve got to improve the transport arrangements for the east, as it has grown. This sort of infrastructure really should have been done 10 years ago.

But the next best time to do it is now,” he says.

“While we are losing these houses, it does mean that we are able to provide the transport system for all of the new houses that are being built in this area so that we don’t have mass congested roads.”

He says people will also have a safe, realistic option of riding bikes and scooters to work.

The removal of properties on the northern side of Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road will finish early next year to enable the main construction phase to start in March/April 2019.

The construction phase will take about two years.

Goff says the introduction of the regional fuel tax has allowed for the remaining three stages of the busway - Pakuranga Town Centre and Reeves Road Flyover, Pakuranga to Botany Busway

and a new interchange at Botany Town Centre - to be fast tracked.

“When you fill your petrol up, you at least know where that money is going.

“This has been talked about for a quarter of a century, 25 years,” Goff says.

“We’ve waited a long time for this.”

Project director, Duncan Humphrey says he was in University when he first heard about AMETI and now, years later, is in charge of overseeing the whole project.

“This work will significantly increase the visibilty of the project for those who live, work and travel through this area,” says AT project director, Duncan Humphrey.

“While this progress is exciting and will result in vastly-improved travel choices, journey times and reliability for east Aucklanders, we appreciate that there will be inconveniences and disruption caused by the removal of properties and imminent construction. We do have plans to minimise these impacts.”

The first of 61 houses along Pakuranga Road came crashing down last week to make way for the AMETI Eastern Busway.

It’s been a quarter century in the making.

Mayor Phil Goff was joined

by Auckland Transport (AT) representatives and local board members, councillors and a local MP donning hi-vis and hardhats to watch the demolition kick off.

“You feel an element of sadness when you see a house come down but you know that what’s going to replace it is the best public transport system Pakuranga and east Auckland has ever seen,” says Goff.

The removal of these Auckland Council-owned properties will allow for parts of Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road to be widened to create a dedicated, congestion-free busway.

This is the first stage of the four-stage project which will also see Panmure Roundabout turned into a safer signalised intersection, new cycle and walking paths, improved public spaces and reserves, a second bridge across Tamaki River and several intersection upgrades.

When the $1.4b busway is fully operational, commuters will be able to travel between Botany and Britomart, by bus and train, in less than 40 minutes.

Goff says east Auckland has been the most poorly-served area in Auckland for public transport and the dedicated busway, walkways and cycleways will give commuters options for getting into the city centre.

Auckland Movement: Mayor must go Call for major and council shake up. Auckland Movement says a total clean out of council is needed.

Starting with the mayor, and working south. The mayor is not looking after, or protecting his people.

Auckland Movement says its long overdue for a total rethink of what council does, and what it’s for.

The movement says Goff and the council are deliberately and knowingly lowering people’s standard of living.

The movement knows of five older couples being rated out of their local homes. One couple has lived in the same house for 52 years.

Ongoing rate, fuel tax, and water rate costs have pushed them out.

They say ‘in the old days rates were fair, the mayor was in the phone book to call, and water was free with the rates’.

With inflation and cost of living increases, and then fuel tax, people find it harder and harder.

Auckland Movement says, there is no need for it. Council has no idea on management, or understanding.

It’s there to serve the people, which is an honour, they say.

So back to basics time, says AM. Here are some facts, and some questions.

Is Council there to serve the people of Auckland ?

Trouble is the people have little or no say.

Citizens and ratepayers are seen as servants by the council.

Tail wagging the dog.

In other words, it is a system where the masters (citizens and ratepayers) are dictated to by the servants.

People pay rates, then have to pay for service on top of that.

Council doesn’t earn, or make money, but rather it costs the people, and then demands it.

Council gets $45 billion a year in revenue, and it’s still not enough council says. That’s why it’s put a fuel tax in place. Its just

The unspoken rule never mentioned by politicians is that in economics, the rich get richer at the expense of the poor and there are so many examples of that, that one could write a book on it.

But probably the best example of that are the world’s best holiday resorts where the average wage earner can no longer afford to holiday there. For example Paris, the Seychelles, Canmore, Cannes, Monte Carlo and, soon, our own Queenstown.

Highland Park Shopping Centre worries Since it was purchased by Foodstuffs earlier this year there have been a range of concerns raised with me about the maintenance of the centre until such time as it closes, with complaints about potholes, badly kept gardens, and boarded up shops turning away prospective shoppers.

I have raised these issues directly with Foodstuffs in recent weeks to try and resolve them and was glad to see last week the repairs to the car park... had taken place, and the gardens and lawns are in better condition.

I still have some concerns regarding the boarded-up shops and I am continuing to raise those concerns on behalf of shop owners and the community at large.

I have also been requesting an update from Foodstuffs on their development plans, which they are not able to share with me yet.

I want to ensure that the community is kept informed about the proposed changes, and to ensure that the shopping centre is kept to a good standard in the interim while these development plans are being progressed.

I will be continuing to raise issues on behalf of residents and shoppers directly with Foodstuffs and Colliers who are managing the shopping centre.

It’s endless self empowerment, and uncontrolled spending on empire building, excessive staffing, and itself, isn’t what council is for.

Gold plated taps in the mayoral office, and a fact-finding mission to Disneyland is a total waste of money, and shows there is no accountability.

Goff’s clear lack of control, and of testicular fortitude to stand up for the people only means the worst is yet to come.

Councillors and senior management are on an uncontrolled gravy train at ratepayers’ expense.

Auckland has for many become unlivable, where homes are not seen as homes by council, but investments which can be taxed.

Where the citizens are not seen as citizens, but cash cows, are incarcerated in complying to every bylaw passed.

Most of which are not needed or thought through, but are implemented solely to empower council, or the money grab.

What Auckland needs are true leaders who have the people’s interest at heart, something we haven’t seen since Robbie’s day.

It’s time for all citizens to get involved, and take a stand. As the old saying goes. Auckland needs you..

The upsurge of nurses, teachers, social workers demanding higher pay is symptomatic of what is to come and could even lead to sit down protests as witnessed in America in the sixties where the blacks sensed they were being shut out of the country’s prosperity.

he struggle for the Hellaby Hunt Cup is well and truly on with the Marie Raos Ray White HPCC Premier Men sitting in a strong position to capitalise on a good day’s cricket next week.

Papatoetoe were invited to bat by acting skipper Andrew Morrison and were soon in trouble at 49/4 against the bowling of Rudi Botadra and Donovan Grobbelaar.

Then Dipreet Singh and N. Deol put on 87 runs in a dogged partnership and looked to be taking control until Botadra had Singh caught by Brian Barnard for 47 with the total at 136 and

the four overs later Deol went bowled Taine Jolley, caught Barnard, for 67.

After that it was just a matter of time as Botadra and Jolley cleaned up the tail.

The Howick Pakuranga bowlers kept a firm leash on their opponents and were backed up with the usual high quality fielding. Botadra had his best day for the Premier side with 5/33 off 17 overs and Jolley turned in an outstanding performance with 3/14 off 10 overs.

In the end, Papatoetoe had scored 203 in 73 overs which looked to be a fairly challenging total given the slow nature of the wicket and the long grass in the outfield. Howick lost an

early wicket with six runs on the board and another at 34 which did seem to back up the idea that the runs were not going to come easily.

However Dan Young was still there at stumps with a well-compiled 53 including five fours and a six after opening the innings and Barnard came to the crease at 4 and proceeded to blast the Papatoetoe bowlers to all four corners of the field. He is 74 off 61 balls with 5 fours and two sixes included in that total.

At stumps, Howick Pakuranga’s total stood at 149/2 trailing by 54 runs with eight wickets in hand. Hopefully the weather gods are kind next week and the lads can get on the field.

ayor Phil Goff has welcomed Auckland Council’s second successful prosecution of an illegal dumper in two weeks but says the penalties should be much higher.

It is a move many in east Auckland will agree with having witnessed many such illegal dumpings in public areas in recent months and year.

In July a commercial truck was caught on council surveillance dumping a large amount of inorganic material in Wiri, south Auckland. A second dumping was recorded at the same location the following week.

The offender was prosecuted, pleaded guilty to both charges and was fined $1000 plus costs.

The offender had previously been fined for dumping green waste in Franklin.

Goff said, “I’m pleased this cowboy commercial outfit has been fined, but given their blatant disregard for our environment, the penalty needs to be tougher. Having offenders spend their weekends cleaning up rubbish around the city, for example, would be a good case of a penalty that fits the crime.

“This is brazen recidivism from a commercial operator with no regard for the ratepayer. Frankly, acting in this way should attract harsher consequences. We have made an approach to the government to amend the relevant

legislation because the penalties under the Litter Act 1979 are clearly not an effective deterrent in 2018.”

Earlier this month another recidivist commercial dumper was identified in south Auckland. The offender in that instance was fined $3500 plus costs for dumping concrete and soil on three separate occasions in Mangere.

The prosecutions follow the Mayor’s announcement in February of $200,000 in additional funding to hire extra enforcement staff and double the number of CCTV cameras in hotspot areas.

School wins pilot trial

oint View School has won a nationwide trial involving more than 20 schools.

In terms 1 and 2, Engineering New Zealand (ENZ) trialled the Wonder Project Rocket Challenge in seven schools, and in term 2, this was extended to 22.

Schools were located from Auckland to Marlborough and more than 1000 children took part. To celebrate the conclusion of pilot 2, students were tasked with creating a short video to showcase their STEM learnings from the six-week challenge.

Winners Point View School were closely followed by Roscommon School and Pukekohe Intermediate, both awarded Highly Commended.

ENZ’s new in-school programme – The Wonder Project – is set to blast off to New Zealand schools next year.

The Wonder Project is all about getting young Kiwis excited about a career in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

It’s designed to spark wonder in these subjects among students from all backgrounds, build confidence, and have them believe they achieve amazing things.

With the announcement comes the call-out for schools and professionals to be involved in 2019.

Adele White, the boards lead on planning, says with the Howick Village Plan being a 30 year document, future growth may indicate a critical use for this land considering its proximity to the town centre.

There is a long list of community groups desperate for premises for which 34 Moore Street would be the perfect fit, they say.

The board also says upgrades on the building to make it fit for purpose are far less than what Auckland Council has previously stated.

They expressed frustration that this was still being used as an obstacle to utilise the premises.

“When we housed Uxbridge Arts Centre in this site while their new

building was being built, we were told that [34 Moore Street] was going to require over $100k of work. But when we challenged this we got away with only $20k of work being required,” Collings says.

“The Governing Body of Auckland Council has given us a stay of execution on this building and we very much appreciate the support from councillors.”

Collings says the board has a lot of work to do around renovations and working out how to best utilise this building for the benefit of the wider community. “I personally believe and will be suggesting to my board that we need to form an independent trust with representatives from the community to act as a vehicle to take this project further.”

The board is required to present an update on the progress of their proposal to the committee in February 2019.

Spring sees highest number of sales in five months T

he number of residential properties sold across New Zealand increased by 15.5 per cent yearon-year – the highest number of sales in 5 months according to the latest data from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ).

The number of properties sold nationally increased from 5880 in October 2017 to 6791 in October 2018 – an increase of 911 houses.

For New Zealand, excluding Auckland, the number of properties sold increased by 15.6 per cent – 654 more properties when compared to October 2017 (from 4189 to 4843).

In Auckland, the number of properties sold increased by 15.2 per cent or 257 more properties, from 1691 in October 2017 to 1948 in October 2018.

Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “October saw the real estate market spring back into action with the volume of sales increasing nationally by 15.5 per cent when compared to the same time last year.

“This is the highest number of sales for a month of October in two years and is the equivalent of an additional 29 houses sold each day across the whole month. It should also be noted that last year’s sales volumes were impacted by the election.

“Regionally, we saw increased sales volumes in 13 out of 16 regions with 10 of those 13 regions seeing double digit increases. But the

“The constraint on supply has continued to drive up house prices across much of the country with record prices achieved for New Zealand, New Zealand, excluding Auckland, and five different regions.

Until we seriously address the fundamental housing supply issues, record price increases is something that we’re going to continue to see around the country – particularly as Aucklanders continue to move out of the city for both lifestyle and affordability reasons,” says Norwell.

“This is the highest number of record median prices in a month since November last year, showing just how strong October’s results are from a price perspective. Interestingly, when we break the data down even further to look at prices from a city perspective, we see that Hamilton, Tauranga, Christchurch and Dunedin Cities all had record median prices too.”

“October also saw Auckland’s median price rise by 1.8 per cent to $865,000 – the highest median price for seven months. It’s too early to say if this is the start of the next price increases for Auckland, but traditionally we do tend to see increases in October and November as we move into the warmer weather.”

Scott McGovern, from Howick, has brought bag nine medals from the Pan Pacific Masters Games held on Australia’s Gold Coast recently.

Competing in the Indoor rowing and athletics throwing events, he featured in rowing 500m, 100m, and 1 minute and, in athletics, the javelin, discus, shot put, hammer and weight throw as well as throws pentathlon.

McGovern medalled in all the events that he competed in and brought home three gold and six silver medals.

Meanwhile the All Blacks selectors are little wiser despite experimenting with so many different backline combinations that have shown brilliance against weaker teams but have

Another alternative is to return Ben Smith from right wing to fullback where he is among the world’s best and try the gifted Barrett in a midfield position where his speed and courage could compensate for his lack of bulk.

While Sonny Bill Williams and Ryan Crotty have been the selectors favoured midfield combination, that of Crotty and Lienert-Brown performed better when paired last year.

Both are rock solid players

who make few mistakes and Lienert-Brown has a happy knack of getting his pass away when tightly marked.

Powerful Ngani Laumape and Jack Goodhue also have their special talents. But while there is plenty of depth, the selectors have yet to find their best combo.

Some believe Ma’a Nonu, who is to team with SBW for the Blues, will help solve the selector’s problem. But, at 36, that is a forlorn hope although he claims to be as fit as he’s ever been.

The problems are not confined to the forwards.

Sam Whitelock deserves a long rest, as does Brodie Retallick who looked injured and made uncharacteristic mistakes against Ireland after his heroics against England. Ditto skipper Read.

Beaten but not bowed, the All Blacks will join Ireland as cofavourites for the world crown next year.

It’s that time of the year again A

re you ready for Midnight Madness in Howick Village?

It’s not called Midnight Madness for nothing.

Howick Village will once again be alive with energy and activity for our annual pre-Christmas shopping extravaganza.

That starts at 9am on Friday November 23 and continues through the evening until midnight, as a family and community occasion.

Midnight Madness has grown rapidly over the past 25 years, and requires road closures to host the 30,000+ people who come to enjoy the vibe, shopping, music and entertainment.

This is your chance to get a head

start on your Christmas shopping and enjoy the excitement that only this iconic event can offer.

As well as our superb retail stores, cafes, restaurants and bars, for the first time, our market square will be open from 6pm hosting a full contingent of stalls – street food vendors, artisan foods, produce and an extensive range of arts and crafts.

Many stalls are new to Howick Village so it’s guaranteed there will be something for everyone.

The popular Fencible Park Christmas Lights display and Snow Cave will again come to life, to delight both young and old.

anta’s decided to trial his Christmas routine early and will be in Howick tomorrow for Midnight Madness!

The burly man in red will be meeting and greeting his fans from 7-9.30pm at the lighting display in Fencible Walk Park brought to life by the Howick Village Christmas Lights Charitable Trust on November 23.

Catch him if you can! But if you don’t make it, fear not, he will be back on December 15 until Christmas Eve — 7-9pm, same place.

Meanwhile, the lights will be up from 6pm-12 midnight on Midnight Madness, and will run from December 15-24, from 7-10pm.

Another Midnight Madness fixture, East FM Radio, will be

sharing the feel good vibes outside Howick Village Optometrists on Picton St. Thanks to the community broadcaster’s army of volunteer DJs, shoppers can tune in from 6pm.

A dedicated team will be entertaining shoppers right through the night, and hosts will even be getting out on the street, interacting with and interviewing passersby.

And one of the highlights surely will be the Christmas Lights Tent and Snow Cave.

he Howick Village Business Association (HVBA) has run a Christmas Tree Competition, the results of which will bring colour and festive cheer to the village.

“We have 14 entries that will start arriving shortly, to be judged. These will be displayed around the Christmas lights tent/rotunda and other locations along Picton Street – from Midnight Madness –November 23 until Christmas Eve,” the HVBA said.

In addition, the following schools, kindergartens and local children’s groups have been given a 1.2m mdf Christmas Tree to decorate which will be placed next to street poles, the length of Picton Street from Midnight Madness “HVBA purchased 20 of these trees as an incentive to get our younger community involved and interested in the Village, and the response was overwhelming.

We had to turn several groups away as we did not have enough trees.”

The groups involved are Cockle Bay School, Mellons Bay School, Botany Downs School, Howick Primary School, Shelly Park School, St Kentigern Middle School, Highland Park
