The contract for the next $100 million construction stage of the Eastern Busway has officially been signed.

Last Thursday Transport Minister Phil Twyford and Auckland Mayor Phil Goff joined Auckland Transport officials to sign the contract for the next stage of the project, which is a designated busway that will run between Panmure and Pakuranga.

Something big, bright and blue has popped up in a popular Howick reserve and has received mixed reactions from the community.

A woman who was murdered in her home in Flat Bush last month has been named after court-ordered name suppression was lifted. Xi Wang, 34, died on December 10 after being violently attacked in her home.

Starbucks returning to Botany Starbucks is returning to Botany Town Centre in late autumn 2019.

April Flat Bush murderer jailed for life

The man who killed Flat Bush mother Xi Wang has been sentenced to life in prison.

Ephraim Beazley, who last month admitted to murdering his ex-wife as she held their two-year-old son in her arms, appeared in the High Court today.

At 89, one of New Zealand’s truly great sporting icons, Yvette Corlett CNZM, MBE of Howick, passed away on Saturday, mourned by a nation who loved her as much for her gracious humility as her athletic prowess.

Ex-real estate king fails to return A former real estate golden boy who had 10 branches and who last year saw his empire crumble has apparently fled to India.

Gurpreet Grewal, whose company Preet & Co went into liquidation last year owing $14 million, faces criminal charges and has failed to return to New Zealand after a High Court judge allowed him to travel to India to raise funds to pay his debts.

War medals stolen Local resident Kate Strawbridge is hoping the public can help recover stolen war medals and an antique trumpet.

Strawbridge has gone to police and has also solicited the help of friends on social media in a bid to get the stolen items back.

“We live on Redoubt Rd and the burglary happened in broad daylight in the middle of the day,” she said.

One seriously injured in crash

T2/Bus lane will launch June 30 Auckland Transport (AT) has confirmed it will go ahead with the planned westbound T2/Bus lane, which will be launched on June 30.

The T2/Bus lane will operate during the peak-travel period in the morning between Dunrobin Place and Gossamer Drive as part of a wider traffic management plan during the construction of the AMETI Eastern Busway.

One person was seriously injured following a three vehicle collision on Meadowlands Drive.

Police were notified shortly after 9am last Thursday.

One person is reported to have serious injuries, police confirmed.

100 and going strong Man arrested after four crashes in one hour A man who stole several vehicles and caused mayhem in “a number of serious driving incidents” was finally arrested in Howick on Monday morning.

Senior Sergeant Graeme Fleming, Counties Manukau Police, said they are now appealing for witnesses.

At 100, Jack Beckerleg still loves gardening, enjoys playing bowls and happily walks with a bottle of red wine to the cafe at the Dannemora Gardens-Metlifecare Retirement Village.

While there are a series of private parties with different groups planned to celebrate his 100th birthday on June 10 (the Times met him four days prior to the big day) Jack jokes that he is going to put a notice outside his door saying `Gone on Holiday’.

The Dannenora Gardens where he has been living since the last 17 years has planned a complimentary afternoon tea with bubbles and a toast to celebrate Jack’s milestone.

He is the first centenarian of the village.

Lepani’s song’s a hit Local artist Lepani Tuifagalele is getting a lot of attention after his recent debut single ‘Pocketful of Love’ sizzled its way up the music charts.

An ex-Macleans College student, he recently signed with Sony after deciding to take the jump and make music his full-time career despite some hesitation.

A familiar face has taken up the reins at Howick Intermediate School.

Sara Pickering looks right at home in the principal’s seat as she talks about her plans for the school’s future. Having stepped up from being the deputy principal, Pickering knows the school like the back of her hand. “To be honest, I don’t think some of the student’s have even noticed they have a new principal,” she laughs.

Gabby Wright took to the netball courts at on Saturday to umpire her first competition game.

This in itself may not be that extraordinary, but the fact that the Pakuranga College student did this from a wheelchair certainly is.

Gabby was a little nervous when she arrived at the Howick and Pakuranga Netball Courts bright and early and a little bit coy about the attention she was receiving at first.

July Family displaced after Maraetai blaze A Givealittle page has been started to help a Maraetai family which lost everything in a house fire last week.

Smoke was seen billowing across Maraetai as firefighters battled a house fire on Craig Road last Thursday.

Fire engines from Otara, Howick and Manurewa responded to the fire at around 1.45pm, but back-up was required, bringing the total number of engines to 11.

Old Library locked A battle is brewing over the old Howick Library building in Fencible Drive — and it could jeopardise the future of the Howick Market.

The Howick Village Association (HVA) has held keys to the ageing building at 16 Fencible Drive for a decade, according to one HVA member. The building was used for storing equipment used in the community.

Now the HVA has been locked out by Panuku Development, Auckland Council’s development arm, citing public safety.

Leaky school: McConnell must pay $1m costs

It’s a big year for Shelly Park School as they celebrated their big 40 last Tuesday also known as Foundation Day, the day the school opened back in 1979.

In honour of the milestone, a birthday celebration was put together by a keen team of parents spearheaded by Ali Cromack, secretary of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

The parent company of a construction company found liable for more than $13 million for repairs on Botany Down Secondary School has been slapped with legal costs of more than $1m.

McConnell is the ultimate parent of H Construction North Island Ltd, formerly known as Hawkins Construction North Island Ltd, or Hawkins for short.

Hawkins built the buildings comprising Botany Downs Secondary College which have been plagued with water tightness issues. After a fourweek trial in the High Court at Auckland, Justice Mathew Downs found Hawkins liable for almost $13.5 million, “the amount necessary to repair the school”.

Ten days later, Hawkins was placed in receivership. Within a month of the judgment, Hawkins went into voluntary liquidation.

Measles reported at 2 schools Two cases of the highly contagious disease measles have been reported at two local schools.

Dr Julia Peters, clinical director at the Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS), confirmed there have been two cases of measles associated with Brookby School and Wakaaranga School.

No other schools in this area have had confirmed cases although Howick Primary thought it had a case.

“If there is a measles case in a school, ARPHS advises the Ministry of Education, and works with the school to inform staff, students and their families,” Dr Peters said.

July Ponzi scheme operator jailed A Half Moon Bay foreign exchange broker who defrauded his clients of more than $7 million has been sentenced to six years and three months’ imprisonment.

He is to serve a minimum period of imprisonment of two years and 11 months.

Kelvin Clive Wood (70) was sentenced yesterday (Wednesday, July 24) at the Auckland District Court on representative charges of ‘Obtaining by deception’ and ‘Theft by person in a special relationship’ brought by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

Priest’s first church was a cowshed Reverend Monsignor Raymond Green, the founding parish priest of St Mark’s Catholic Parish, died peacefully at St Joseph’s Home, Little Sisters of the Poor in Herne Bay, aged 92.

It was during his appointment as assistant priest at Panmure, that Bishop Delargy asked him to found the parish of the yet-to-be-built, St Mark’s Church in Pakuranga.

Driver: I’m no hero Arthur Moore is 82, resilient and full of hope. The Pakuranga resident has bowel cancer and, for five weeks, took two buses every week day to Auckland Hospital for radiotherapy treatment. It was on one of those travel days into the city in June that he stumbled while trying to catch his bus, the city-bound Howick & Eastern 70x. It was a nasty fall and one which landed him in hospital for five days with a brain bleed.

Despite the set-back, Arthur remains upbeat and is eternally grateful to the bus driver that day, and a couple of passengers who came to his rescue. After getting him aboard the bus and patching him up, the bus driver made a diversion and dropped Arthur at Auckland hospital.

Driver Sandeep Singh, 32, of Pakuranga, was at the wheel negotiating morning rushhour and witnessed Arthur’s fall.

Primary school principals to go on strike Primary and intermediate school principals have been on a slow-down strike for the past month, boycotting Ministryrelated work to fight for better pay and working conditions.

Rainfall good for dams

Delay for AMETI’s Reeves Road Flyover

Despite heavy rainfall on Tuesday night — and the wettest August since 1992 — water utility company Watercare continues to warn Aucklanders to be mindful of water usage.

Watercare told the Times it recorded rainfall overnight Tuesday of 24.5mm at the Lower Huia Dam and 56.5 mm at the Mangatangi Dam. “Now the dams are 79 per cent full compared with a historical average of 90.5 per cent for this time of year,” a Watercare spokesperson said.

Auckland Transport officials this week confirmed that a key piece of the city’s second largest transport project, the AMETI/Eastern Busway’s Reeves Road Flyover, has been delayed. This means further uncertainty for a project vital to unlocking congestion in east Auckland, says Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga.

Petition to save shellfish The public is being asked to add its voice to a call for the Government to close a popular east Auckland beach to shellfish gathering.

Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has launched a petition asking the Minister of Fisheries to ban the taking of cockles from Cockle Bay Beach for at least five years so it can recover from over-harvesting.

Ross has teamed up with Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association chairman Matthew Brajkovich to push for the beach to be closed.

Saint Kentigern College’s basketball boys premier team has won the New Zealand Secondary School’s National Championships for the first time in the school’s history. This championship has been going for 52 years.

The contentious issue of freedom camping around Howick has reared its head again.

The matter was raised at a recent Howick Local Board meeting by board member Adele White.

In a 2018 media release Auckland Council announced it had plans to allow freedom campers at four locations around Howick and Pakuranga.

The replica of the Endeavour sailed into Maraetai last week as part of the Tuia250 commemorations which mark 250 years since the arrival to New Zealand of Captain James Cook and the Endeavour in 1769.

Accompanied by the Spirit of New Zealand and other vessels, the flotilla landed on the beach at Magazine bay, adjacent to the Umupuia marae. Due to channel restrictions the tall ships dropped anchor approximately 1 kilometre offshore.

Beachlands local Steve Lucas has sailed on the leg from Gisborne to Maraetai, where the Endeavour replica was moored.

The Howick Local Board has a new chair.

The inauguration of the recently elected Howick Local board was held on Tuesday at Uxbridge in Howick.

Incumbents, former chair David Collings and deputy chair Katrina Bungard, have been joined on the board by newcomer Bruce Kendall, a former Olympic gold medallist in board sailing, and local business owner Bo Burns. Returning members from Botany and Pakuranga subdivisions included John Spiller, Mike Turinsky, Adele White, Bob Wichman and Peter Young.

Bungard was notable by her absence on the night, having chosen to spend her evening pressing her claims for selection for the vacant National party nomination for Botany. This proved to be in vain as ex-Air New Zealand CEO Christophen Luxon was chosen to contest the seat, across the suburb at the National Party’s new office in Chapel Road.

December Granny May says farewell

After more than 20 years of coming to Howick Primary before and after school, ‘Granny’ Mary Harmsworth has finally decided to hang up her high-vis jacket for good. Sexual assaults at school

A dad who says his young son was sexually assaulted at school by other kids is demanding greater safety for students and a guarantee no other children will be victimised.

The father, whose identity the Times cannot reveal for fear of identifying his child, believes Shelly Park School failed to determine the scale of the problem which involves at least four children aged from 5 to 7. The incidents began in about August 2018.

The parent went public in a social media post on November 26, 2019 “after mulling the whole situation over and becoming frustrated the school had done nothing to protect the victims or ensure any other students had been victimised”.

Brent Jenkin: ‘the time is right to go’ Brent Jenkin is all smiles after being dunked at the Wakaaranga School Gala that he is so proud of.

After 47 years as an educator, Brent Jenkin knows when it is time to retire.

It is a bitter-sweet decision as December 13 will be Jenkin’s last day at the principal’s office after 22 years of leading Wakaaranga School, the second largest primary school in Howick and Pakuranga.
