TELLING STORIES

‘If you are going to live, leave a legacy. Make a mark on the world that can’t be erased’.

Maya Angelou’s words resonated with me as I recently attended the opening of the grand Swaminarayan Complex spearheaded by Farm Cove residents Dr Kanti and Ranjna Patel.

After months/years of uncertainty and delay that cost them a fortune during Covid, the state-of-the art, sprawling community complex in Papatoetoe was officially inaugurated by Minister Michael Wood, National Party Leader Christopher Luxon, Act Party Leader David Seymor as well as politicians including Winston Peters, Melissa Lee and Jenny Salesa.

Everyone was visibly moved as Patel’s journey veined with sacrifice, passion, drive and humility unfolded at the event.

In a heart-rending speech, the philanthropic doctor thanked New Zealanders for being so inclusive, as he traced his journey from humble beginnings of a young immigrant, setting up practice in Otara with his better half, a third generation Kiwi-Indian.

Years later, the power couple worked hard to ingeniously build East Tamaki Healthcare with innovative systems in place that won many awards. Soon they proved to be the largest, privately owned Primary Healthcare Group in New

Zealand providing low-cost healthcare to all ethnicities, gender and race.

Now called Tamaki Health, Dr Patel retired to focus his energies on the Swaminarayan Temple and the adjoining complex with sprawling conference and dining facilities—a hub for people of all cultures and ethnicities.

Listening to dignitaries and saints speak of Dr Kanti’s precious gift to the community, it struck me that each one of us is capable of rising above the rubble to achieve a purpose that is far greater than ourselves…and leave a legacy.

We’ve all been gifted a block of marble and tools to shape it. We can either drag the untouched piece of marble behind us; pound it into gravel; or shape it into a glorious gift for the rest of the community.

The Swaminarayan Complex is testimony to carving a present for future generations.

On that note, we hope you enjoy this month’s offering to you, as we continue to take pride in telling people’s stories, being the voice and glue of the community, we love so much.

FOUNDER OF FO GUANG SHAN PASSES AWAY

Founder of the Fo Guang Shan Order, the Venerable Master Hsing Yun, passed away peacefully at the age of 95, on February 5, at 5pm in Taiwan, amidst the solemn chanting of the Buddha’s name.

With great sadness and sorrow, the congregation mourned the loss of the eminent Buddhist master who had devoted his life to the propagation of humanistic Buddhism, fostering peace and harmony, globally.

Since the founding of Fo Guang Shan, the Buddhist monk established over

300 temples worldwide and founded five universities in Taiwan, USA, Australia, and the Philippines, as well as the Buddha’s Light International Association with millions of members.

At the age of 12, he accompanied his mother to Nanjing in search of his father, an incense vendor who disappeared in the wake of Japan’s invasion but couldn’t find him.

As they passed Nanjing Qixia Monastery, he met Venerable Master Zhi Kai, and by the age of 15, he received full ordination at the monastery.

For over 80 years, the spiritual leader endeavoured to inspire and change lives. He was followed by over two thousand monastic disciples and millions of followers worldwide. He had also ordained over one hundred

Howick Local Board members John Spiller, Adele White and Peter Young paid their respects to the Venerable Hsing Yun at the Fo Guang Shan Temple in Flatbush.

Dharma heirs to continue his teachings.

In his late eighties, the charismatic teacher almost lost his eyesight but continued to do one-stroke calligraphy, sharing words of wisdom with his followers.

The Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple on Stancombe Rd, Flat Bush opened in late 2007 and continues to be a multicultural and educational hub that propagates humanistic Buddhism.

The temple offers a range of community courses such as Chinese calligraphy, Chinese language, yoga and martial arts; hosts workshops on 3G and 4G for children from neighbouring schools; provides a platform for artists at the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery and is a popular venue for crime prevention talks and meetings.

HOW WOULD DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

Feminine elegance whilst capturing a fleeting moment in time.

SOMETHING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU?

Even though I paint women oozing elegance, I only own one pair of click clack shoes (heels – which I never wear) and buy more outfits for my models than I do for myself. I often do my paintings upside down (the canvas not me) and sometimes it helps if I take my glasses off to make it blurry.

WHEN DID YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH VINTAGE VOGUE, MOVIE ICONS, FILM NOIR, BEAUTY, PERFUMES AND ALL THINGS GLAM?

I often ask myself this question as I am probably the least glam person you could meet and this was certainly never encouraged. I wouldn’t say any of my upbringing influenced it other than seeing images in the very few magazines I saw. But if there was ever a picture of Marylin Monroe or Marlene Dietrich, I had to get a pencil and paper and draw it. As a teenager, my parents gave me a gorgeous History of Vogue fashion book which I still absolutely love to this day. I have a huge appreciation for beauty, be that in the shape of a perfume bottle, an interior, a certain look, pose or outfit. I absolutely crave to capture this on canvas but not in my own reality, funnily enough.

DID YOU CONSIDER BEING A FASHION DESIGNER?

When I was very little, I used to make outfits for my dolls and fitted them together using cellotape until my mum taught me how to sew. I took textiles A ‘Level at school and not only did I love dressmaking, I was very interested in the history of fashion. If I had more confidence or knew more about this career, I think I would have enjoyed this path or even costume design. I feel that my art process now enables me to dabble in this area as well as fashion photography.

WHAT IS THE CREATIVE PROCESS INVOLVED WITH YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE?

My work is very realistic, so I take my own reference photos to create the realism. If I am working on a specific theme, I will spend several weeks doing research to spark ideas and plan a photoshoot with props and outfits to create the right look. A lot of time goes into sourcing it. Each time I do a photoshoot I try and learn something new or challenge myself.

Then I must find my model. My first model was Rebecca around the time my love for Vintage Vogue blossomed. She had a confident beauty, was graceful and elegant and she appeared in my solo show ‘En Vogue’ in 2016 which was inspired by the covers of Vintage Vogue magazines. Since then, I have been extremely fortunate to meet my other models, Morgan, Emma, Victoria and Tasmyn. Each and every one of them could easily have featured on the cover of a Vintage Vogue magazine.

When my models turn up for a photoshoot they get very excited and treat it like a big dress-up session. Even though most of the shoot is carefully planned out the best shots are frequently the ones that are improvised by the model herself. ▸

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION?

I seem to be continuously inspired. I could be looking through a magazine, or my Instagram feed, or see a snippet of a film and I get a flurry of excitement. Sometimes I get my sketchbook out and make a visual note of it – or I screengrab and save it to my computer for later.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW?

I am super excited about my next theme! My previous theme was Retro where I did some funky paintings with a 60’s and 70’s feel. When people saw these works, they asked if I was inspired by Slim Aarons, who I had never heard of – so I did some research on him. He was an American photographer who captured the ‘high life’ of attractive people in social settings – such as outdoor pools. I especially liked his 1960’s images with the vintage bathing suits and I thought it would be a challenge to paint groups of people. I was very fortunate to meet a wonderful lady called Hilaire who collects vintage fashion and she very kindly lent me the most amazing swimsuits and clothing. I had a photoshoot all set for the Parnell Baths, but that fell through so Hilaire kindly let me do the shoot at her pool in Remuera. With the help of family and friends we tried to capture a Slim Aarons feel and the results were amazing. It was the biggest shoot I have done to date and I had seven people to dress and several pose ideas, each with outfit changes. We were all transported back to the 1960s for the day. I have just started my first painting and hope to release the series later this year.

HOW MANY HOURS A DAY DO YOU DEVOTE TO ART?

As many as I possibly can! I try and do some exercise in the mornings with either a swim or some pilates, and then rush to the studio as quickly as possible, get my apron on, the music blaring on my headphones and straight to my easel to start painting. Without this, I would go completely mad so the more hours painting, the better for everyone!

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO WHEN YOU ARE WORKING?

I played the cello for many years and was in an orchestra so I enjoy classical music. Thanks to itunes I created my own playlist which I listen to every day. It started off with just classical as I find this relaxing, but with ‘Shazam’ on my phone, if I hear a piece of music I like, it gets added. Now my playlist has everything from Bruchner to Hans Zimmer, Dave Brubeck to Billy Eilish and Nils Frahm to Eric Clapton and much more.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR SIGNATURE CAMOUFLAGE IN EVERY PAINTING?

My paintings have a little secret in them. I hide a little lizard somewhere and you have to look very closely to find it. Several years ago, I went to Rarotonga, and I just adored the little lizards scuttling round at night. They seemed to appear out of nowhere and you could just see them peeping out from behind the curtain rail, or on top of the window frame.

ARE YOU PARTIAL TO ANY PIECE OF ART/SERIES?

My favourite series to date would have to be Film Noir. This was a huge learning curve from working out how to do the dramatic lighting to it being my first ‘on location’ shoot. I hired several outfits from ‘First Scene’ and collected props such as a brandy bottle and glass (with cold tea instead of brandy), a pretend gun and I made a fake cigarette in a holder using an old paint brush and some rolled up paper. After I had scouted Auckland for possible historical locations my model, Morgan, and I did an awesome photoshoot from the old Auckland Railway Station to the old George Court on Mercury Lane and Hotel De Brett Lane plus more.

YASMIN BHADHA:

SETTING A NEW ‘BENCH-MARK’

For someone whose tryst with powerlifting started just two years ago, Yasmin Bhadha has set new records for New Zealand.

The 18-year-old picked up Gold at the National Powerlifting Championships 2022 and went on to set a new record for deadlift at 177kg. After proving there is strength in numbers, the former St Kent’s student soon after won three Golds and one Silver for under 69kgs at the Commonwealth Powerlifting

Championships hosted by the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF). Not only did the Whitford resident grab the Gold in her weight class but also took out the prestigious overall best subjunior title across all weights category and set new Commonwealth records along the way!

SNAPCHAT WITH BHADHA WHO IS CURRENTLY PREPARING FOR THE JUNIOR IPF WORLDS 2023.

BIGGEST HIGH… breaking records at Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships held in Auckland, particularly the deadlift record. The feeling of being on stage, doing something you love, surrounded by a stadium full of people screaming ‘UP’ at the top of their lungs, is indescribable!

BIGGEST CHALLENGE… focusing on all aspects of prep for the Commonwealth Championships. Apart from going to the gym and lifting weights, I had to focus on recovery (such as nutrition, sleep, etc). The standard of this competition was a lot higher than I’d experienced.

MOST PROUD OF… Being very disciplined during my prep and giving up on lots of little privileges. Every time things got tough, I reminded myself that I was working towards a bigger goal and the gratification of achieving that goal would be so much bigger than anything else.

MY SECRET TO HANDLING NERVES ON DAY OF COMPETITION… nerves on comp day are bound to happen. It just means you care about the competition. Every time I felt nervous, I would focus on my breath, counting the inhale and making sure the exhale was one count longer. It allowed me to feel more in control.

WHEN I’M NOT POWERLIFTING… I enjoy spending time with my mates. I love reading, particularly books which expand and elevate your mindset/ outlook on life. Photography has always been a passion of mine, I’ve even had the opportunity to be the official photographer at a couple of novice APA Powerlifting Comps. I also play other sports such as netball and cricket. Have been playing team sport since I was a kid and believe it teaches you so much.

MY TRYST WITH POWERLIFTING BEGAN… in January 2021, when I first stepped foot in the gym and had absolutely

no clue what I was doing. Over the year I gained an understanding of training in the gym and nutrition. A year later, I was keen to work towards a goal in the gym and reached out to one of the trainers at the gym who did powerlifting/ strength training coaching. He started me up on a structured programme and decided we should compete in the ‘Auckland Champs’ competition which was just two months away.

WINNING THREE GOLDS AND ONE SILVER AT THE IPF COMMONWEALTH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2022 FOR UNDER 69KGS FELT... Amazing! It was a great feeling. It proved that all the hard work and extra effort you put into a goal, always pays off.

BEST ADVICE RECEIVED FROM MY COACH… being mentally tough is just as important as physical fitness. My coach Denzil Hogan says you can have all the physical strength in the world but if you choke and can’t execute, then it counts for nothing.

MY HAPPY PLACE… would definitely be the gym, particular the powerlifting gym ‘Get Strength’ where I almost did my entire prep. The supportive and uplifting environment was extremely motivating and made me push myself harder.

DIFFERENCE

BETWEEN POWERLIFTING AND WEIGHTLIFTING… there’s a common confusion between powerlifting and weightlifting. Powerlifting competitions consist of only squat, bench and deadlift. Whereas weightlifting consists of snatch, hang clean, push press, and clean and jerk. Also, weightlifting is included in the Olympics, whereas powerlifting is not.

MANTRA FOR SUCCESS… everyone must choose between one of two pains in life: the pain of discipline or the rain of regret.

NEXT BIG GOAL… to compete at the Junior IPF Worlds 2023. I hope to place in this competition and set more records.

LIVING WITH LAST REINDEER HERDERS IN THE WORLD

A great adventurer at heart, Andrew Bayly, MP for Port Waikato recently took on an incredible journey to Mongolia with his youngest son, George. In 2016, Bayly created lifelong memories with his oldest son James whilst embarking on an epic trek to the North Pole. Two years later, Bayly followed the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia, as he trekked on camel for 22 days through the deserts of Jordan with his second son, Daniel. 21-year-old GEORGE BAYLY writes about the biggest adventure of his life as they traversed the remote and stark landscapes of Mongolia.

The Dukha live in the Khövsgöl region of northern Mongolia and are one of the last groups of nomadic reindeer herders in the world. Given the harsh realities of their life, the tradition is likely to die out over the next couple of decades. Our trip would offer the prospect of witnessing this before it disappears.

We wanted to visit in winter and spend a lengthy period with the Dukha –something that had not been done before by Westerners. We took a New Zealand film producer and Mongolian cameraman with us so we can make a documentary to help raise awareness of them.

January is the coldest time of the year in Mongolia, with daytime

temperatures as low as minus 43° C. Our accommodation would be very basic: the Dukha live in tepees made from canvas thrown over birch logs, with a bare earthen floor.

We would be facing days of travel in deep snow while riding reindeer, so we bought specialised clothing and sleeping bags rated to minus 35 degrees. Once in Mongolia though, we also wore the local gear of pants made from yak wool, knee-high dog-fur lined boots, sheepskin-lined coats, and a mink hat. We also bought two megastrong head torches to go out at night on wolf patrol.

After five days’ travel via 4WD vehicles, we finally met our Dukha ▸

www.eastlife.co.nz eastlife | march 2023 | 15
George (left) and Andrew Bayly on surefooted reindeers in Mongolia. Photo Andrew Bayly

family and were welcomed with a meal of precious reindeer meat. The Dukha rarely kill a reindeer for meat. Reindeer are primarily raised for their milk which has a very high fat content and can be left for months in a plastic container without needing to be chilled. For a Mongolian, the best meal ever is boiled meat – usually goat or sheep – with noodles, and this is served as a soup for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Not very palatable!

It took a day to ride to their main encampment at 1800m elevation. Here we got to experience the difficulty with which the Dukha carry out even menial tasks – like collecting and chopping firewood or using a hatchet to break through the frozen river to access fresh water. One of the daily tasks was rounding up any reindeer that had escaped overnight and herding them back into the enclosure.

Every day we would ride a reindeer for around 20-30 km, either to visit people, check out an area as potential grazing, or see a particular sight. Reindeers have an amazing ability to travel through snow. They have oversized, crescent-shaped hooves which enables them to walk on snow without sinking into it. If you watch a herd of reindeer, they will all step in the tracks made by the leading reindeer.

We enjoyed some memorable trips. On one occasion we stayed at a separate camp for two evenings so we could see more of the Forbidden Land. On another night, we got caught out in the dark and had to sleep out in the snow without any shelter. When we woke up, we were all covered in snow.

Our hardest trip was to the tallest peaks nearby to see over the border to Russia and to hunt wild boar. We had to ride up a near 35-degree slope, and this was

when our reindeer demonstrated just how powerful they are, climbing a steep slope in waist-deep snow with an adult rider and their packs on their back.

The Dukha are people of incredible determination, able to survive in a brutal environment. They are some of the most generous and kind-hearted people we have ever encountered. But their future is bleak. The only realistic prospect is tourism. It is dreadful to think this small but dynamic group may need to remain stationary so that international tourists can come and ‘witness’ them during the summer months.

I am so happy that we managed to spend time with them in their natural environment. I have many wonderful memories, but my most treasured one will be the time I shared with my dad, away from all the distractions of our everyday lives.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY RETIREMENT AGE IS CALLED GOLDEN YEARS?

It may have something to do with the fact that a golden age is the overarching time in a person’s life or country’s history when the greatest achievements have happened. The term originated from early Greek and Roman poets, who used it to refer to a period best described as pure gold!

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT HOW OR WHERE YOU’D LIKE TO SPEND YOUR GOLDEN YEARS?

LIVING ON A CRUISE LINER: life’s a cruise! Retiring on a cruise liner is the ultimate fantasy for many who dream of living on the big boat as they sail away into the horizon. Who wouldn’t want to be on a holiday 365 days of the year, visiting countries, making new friends, getting entertained, and having all your needs

looked after? With long term cruising discounts, credit card points and senior price breaks – some argue that retiring on a cruise liner may work out cheaper than the cost of assisted living. There are several cruise lines that allow travellers to purchase an apartment or condo onboard, with food and other amenities included. However, it would help to go on a three month cruise to check if you enjoy the rhythm of a floating home and can take in the occasional rough seas.

ESCAPE AND EXPLORE IN RVS: it’s time to hit the road! Has the thought of selling your home and belongings to invest in an RV and travel the length and breath of the country, crossed your mind? Living in a motor home gives people the freedom to explore and be in charge of their expenses and experiences. While some prefer to rent out their home before they hit the road so that they have a place to come back to, others find long term spots at RV parks equally welcome. Renting an RV before you purchase one, could initially provide the experience of RV living without fully committing to it. ▸

GOLDEN YEARS:

HOME SHARING: sharing a home with your family, friends or like-minded people with some rules in place is a good option for those seeking companionship and a lower cost of living. Having a roomie around, also provides an extra layer of security as it helps with household chores, grocery shopping, going to the theatre or concert. For those who’d like to explore the option, Senior Homeshares and Silvernest specialise in connecting seniors interested in co-habiting—on their own terms.

AGING IN PLACE: If you prefer to grow old at home in familiar surroundings, you may want to consider having some assistance and services in place.

For instance Driving Miss Daisy provides safe, friendly and reliable companion driving service which offers independence and peace of mind as they make your journey as safe as possible.

There are other valuable services available, including Elderly Assist. For those who find the journey through retirement tough, Janice Wills of Elderly Assist helps clients to navigate their choice of retiring at home. She provides in-house services to assist them to either remain in their own home or to downsize, declutter and relocate to a smaller home or retirement village.

With the right help, in terms of cleaning or support service such as Hire a Hubby; Greenacres for maintaining your garden; or ordering healthy, fresh meals from Eat, one can continue to lead a normal life in familiar surroundings.

Support services such as Age Concern, East Health Trust Primary Health Organisation and Giving Time, readily provide specialised services for over 65 and help navigate the unknown.

Probus Clubs, U3A, Crossnet-Golden Age Coffee Club, Rotary, Lions, Grey Power also play a huge role to ensure that retirees have active social interaction, outings, intellectual stimulation, and continue to contribute to society.

Another helpful tool is a workbook that helps put your affairs in order. Authored by Lynn Kidd, I am Sorted provides useful information/checklists to guide you through setting out your wishes for health, legal matters, funeral and provide vital contacts for those to manage your affairs when the time is right.

I created this ‘concept’ many moons ago, because it will be an obvious part of our future, and more importantly... the future of our children, loved ones, extended family, friends et al. There are many techniques involved here. Most are ‘above board’ and even... credible and honest!

However, the language involved to ‘persuade’ you to ‘believe’ something, can include ‘pushy’ advertising, overeager promotions, non-stop ‘encouragement’ and dubious endorsements... to excite us and ‘awaken our potential curiosity’. Beware. They can be persistent and aggressive!

But wait. ‘They’ are now starting to ‘up the ante’ and bring in the ‘big guns’ to the party. ‘Bad’ Guys, are adjusting the ‘direction of our journey’. They will seduce, coax, entice, convince, captivate, lure, tempt, promise and yes, even try to threaten us too. They are mostly unethical.

Their BIG 3 are: ‘indoctrination’, ‘disinformation’ and of course ‘propaganda’. All three have been chosen by ‘them’, to achieve just one, very simple goal. To take over! We ‘distracted’ human ‘beans’ haven’t noticed, that ‘their’ secret motto is: ‘The Goal is Control’! Like ‘politics’ maybe.

Create your ‘vaccine’ to combat this rampant anti-freedom and anti-democracy ‘pandemic’. One could be your CHECK-IT-OUT formula, to challenge and re-direct all dictatorships. The best protection for us is... US! The website below will help you prepare a ‘better YOU’... now! OK.

SUMMER VIBES

Do protect your pets against the harmful rays of the sun, writes DR ADRI

of True Vets.

We are all aware of the lack of ozone protection in New Zealand and hence the importance of ample sunscreen protection. But it’s just as important to protect your pets against the harmful rays of the sun!

Not all cats and dogs are equally susceptible to sunburn since those with dense coats and darker coat colors have their own, natural protective layer. However, those with light coats and especially those with white coats tend to have more sensitive skin. Any exposed skin with thin or no hair coverage needs to be protected with a good quality sunscreen as not only can these pets get sunburnt, but it can also increase their risk for developing skin cancer!

There is often a direct correlation between the lack of skin pigmentation and the dog’s enthusiasm for suntanning! A lot of dog breeds with ‘pink tummies’ love laying on their backs while basking in the sun and although we do not often take our cats to the beach to sunbathe, they do love sitting in a sunny windowsill. A window unfortunately provides scant protection for those pink nose and ear tips.

Excessive UV exposure in pets with sensitive skin causes their skin to become red, scaly and itchy, a condition called solar dermatitis. Recurrent episodes of solar dermatitis can increase their chance of developing more serious skin conditions, including cancers. There are numerous good quality sunscreens to choose from. It is best to stick with a pet specific sunscreen as these have been developed specifically for our furry friends and are unlikely to cause adverse skin reactions. Daily application on the exposed skin area is recommended.

Dr Delsey is the founder of InstinctualParent.com an online community of parents looking to better their relationships with their children. She shares how motherhood can be quite lonely at times.

Becoming a mother can be a fulfilling experiences, but it can also be incredibly lonely. For many new mums, the transition from working, having friends and a social life to spending most of their days with a baby can be a huge shock. It’s easy to feel isolated, especially when you’re struggling with sleep deprivation, household chores, and the never-ending demands of caring for a baby.

I went through it with both my kids! I felt like I was in a completely different world, one where I didn’t have much in common with my friends who didn’t have children. It was a tough transition, but I eventually learned to find joy in the simple moments with my little one.

I also loved the opportunity of connecting with other mums who have been through the same thing… it makes a big difference. These moments also taught me the importance of putting myself first and taking care of me. Whether it was scheduling reading time, exercise, or doing something I enjoy. Taking time and being present refreshed me and changed the way I kept up with the demands of motherhood.

I have to remind myself that the feeling of loneliness is temporary. As kids grow up, our lives change again. In the meantime, I get to focus on enjoying the moments I have with my boys, and remembering that I’m not alone.

KNOW YOUR SKIN

TANIA CIBULSKIS, founder of Scenturie on six different skin types.

NORMAL/ BALANCED SKIN: is not too oily or dry. Pore size is just visible, and skin feels supple, and smooth. Most skin products are tolerated but care is still needed to ensure optimal hydration and nourishment.

DRY SKIN: can lead to a dull complexion, premature ageing, peeling, itchiness, and irritation. Moisture is essential for dry skin! Try face oils, serums, and moisturisers with hydrating ingredients, such as shea butter and hyaluronic acid.

SENSITIVE SKIN: When exposed to irritants it can react quickly producing symptoms such as redness, itching, burning, and dryness. Sensitive skin types should avoid skin products with strong fragrances, synthetic chemicals, or alcohol.

COMBINATION SKIN: can be a mix of oily, dry, and balanced skin and can be affected by ageing, hormones, and climate. Try gentle daily cleansing and toning, followed by moisturising with nutrient-rich, non-comedogenic products.

OILY SKIN: can lead to blocked pores and blemishes. Skin may look shiny with larger than normal pores. Oily skin needs moisture. Recommended skincare products include those that help balance excess oil and are non-comedogenic.

ACNE-PRONE SKIN: People can have dry, oily, or a combination of any of the skin types and still have acne-prone skin. Light-weight, gentle skincare products that cleanse the skin without clogging the pores are most beneficial.

Nutrient-rich, non-toxic, plant-based natural skincare that performs.

BRUSHING UP ON DENTAL HYGEINE

ALFRED RICO, general manager Dental Planet shares some quick dental tips to keep your teeth and gums healthy!

BRUSHING

> Brush with a soft toothbrush for two minutes, twice a day (once in the morning and once at night).

> It is better to wait at 30 minutes after a meal

> Use toothpaste with fluoride in it

> Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the teeth

> For the front of the teeth and the back of the teeth, use small circular motions to brush and also sweep the toothbrush from the gum to the end of the tooth

> Make sure to clean around the gums area

> Use a back and forth scrubbing motion for the biting surfaces of the teeth

> Spit the toothpaste after brushing rather than rinsing

CLEANING BETWEEN THE TEETH

> Use floss or small brushes between the teeth at least once a day

> When flossing, wind the two ends of the floss around two fingers and bring it all the way down to the gum line

> Form a C-shape with the floss around the tooth (like you’re hugging the tooth with the floss)

> Scrape the floss upwards away from the gums

> Make sure to move along to clean areas of floss as you move along the mouth

> If you’re using small brushes to clean between the teeth, then make sure to pick the brush size that feels tight between the teeth

WATERY EYES

Watery eyes are common, requiring thorough assessment of the tear supply and drainage system of the eyes, writes

THE TEAR SYSTEM

The lacrimal or tear system produces watery or aqueous tears and drains the old ones away. Along with the eyelids, lashes and brows, protects the eye from irritants, pollutants, foreign bodies and infection.

The lacrimal gland releases aqueous to be distributed across the eye surface with each blink. These tears contain antimicrobials, protein and electrolytes – all to maintain a healthy eye surface. Tears exit the eye with each blink, being pumped into the lacrimal sac before escaping down the nose. Watery eyes can indicate a blockage in this drainage system or an irregularity of the eye lid margin which may allow the tears to simply ‘fall’ out of the eye. This type of watery eye usually occurs in one eye only, and be fairly constant in nature.

MEIBOMIAN OR OIL GLANDS:

Healthy eyes have around 60 meibomian glands distributed between the upper and lower lids. They release clear oil or lipid into the tear film providing additional lubrication and reducing undue evaporation of the aqueous layer – thus allowing for a clear, smooth optical surface.Lipid deficiency disrupts the pH or acidity level of our tears, creating a ‘toxic tear syndrome’, whereby tears become an irritant. This leads to further watering of the eyes. Lipid deficient or evaporative dry eye tends to involve both eyes and will lead to more intermittent watering.

REACH OUT FOR AN ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS

When we examine a ‘watery eye’, we carefully examine your tear supply and drainage system along with ensuring your eyelids are healthy and correctly positioned to aid a good lacrimal and tear system. We will work closely with you to enhance your tear-film.

MATT JOHNS: ‘STILL’ WORKING…

Since Whitford local, Matt Johns, began rolling out the barrels, his team has had, well, you can guess how the next part goes!

JON RAWLINSON spoke with the Pokeno Whisky owner to learn more about this company’s plans and the first of its ‘malt in the mouth’ offerings.

“WE DOUBLE DISTIL. THE IRISH TRIPLE DISTIL BECAUSE IT TAKES THEM THAT LONG TO GET IT RIGHT,” HE LAUGHS. “I ONLY SAID THAT BECAUSE I HAVE AN IRISHMAN SITTING RIGHT NEXT TO ME!”

Matt Jones

What happens when a couple of Englishmen, an Irishman, a Frenchwoman, a Scotsman and (at least one) New Zealander walk into a whisky distillery? They make Kiwi whisky, of course!

Although Pokeno Whisky’s distillery – in rural, southern Auckland – has been operating for a few years, good things take time, so it wasn’t until late last year that the first of its single malt Kiwi whisky headed to market.

“We took a few years to plan – it’s a big investment,” Matt confirms. “Because we’re only making single malt, it has to be aged for a minimum of three years. We now have a fantastic single malt.”

Originally from Loughborough, England, Matt has (roughly) 25 years’ experience in the business, in New Zealand and Europe, under his belt. He leads a team that also includes his wife, Celene, his brother, Gez, and a number of other whisky experts.

“My brother, Gez, has been living here for about 25 years and married a New Zealander, so we came over for family holidays quite a lot. We loved it so much that, 10 years ago, we never quite made it out of the country again!” Matt says. “My wife, Celene, is French, so we were living in the countryside in France for 20 years before coming to New Zealand. When we moved to Auckland [Remuera]

about 10 years ago, it was the only time we’ve really lived in the city. We’ve now been in Whitford for about a year.”

While the company sources its barley from the South Island, Pokeno was the ideal spot for the distillery for more than one reason.

“Water is extremely important and due to its volcanic past, in Pokeno we have access to pure, natural spring water from an aquifer below us. It’s rich in iron and manganese which is great for distilling. Also, because we’re in a valley, the high levels of humidity are fantastic for rapid maturation of our whisky.”

Proximity to transport routes between the ports at Tauranga and Auckland, are also proving beneficial.

Whether we call it whisky or whiskey, bourbon, scotch, or Irish whiskey for that matter, names count in the distilling business. Not only is the right name important to connoisseurs, in some cases, it can even be defined by law.

“Whiskey with an ‘e’ can be bourbon, Irish whiskey or Canadian whiskey, for example, whereas Scotch whisky doesn’t have an ‘e’, but nor does English whisky, nor Japanese whisky and neither does New Zealand whisky,” Matt explains. “We make single malt whisky from 100 per cent malted barley, batch distilling in a copper pot still and aged

for three years. Single malt is the top end, the summit, the best.”

Due to the New Zealand climate, Matt and his team can achieve quicker maturation, so a dram that may take 10-12 years to reach maturity in Scotland can be achieved within just three or four years, he confirms.

And, while Irish whiskey is often triple distilled, it doesn’t necessarily add to the quality.

“We double distil. The Irish triple distil because it takes them that long to get it right,” he laughs. “I only said that because I have an Irishman sitting right next to me!”

While Pokeno Whisky is available here, it is also intended to ‘give them a taste of Kiwi’.

“We are exporting to the UK, France, Germany, the US and Australia, that’s the plan to begin with. We will be launching into other markets, but we’re still working on exactly where,” he adds. “We’re committed to top quality, but also to making New Zealand whisky affordable. Pokeno Origin, our signature product, retails for $99. This allows our customers to afford the product, taste it, love it and then look at what else we can offer. We’re aiming to cover the whole top shelf, not just the top of it.”

HERE ARE TWO EXCEPTIONAL VALUES FOR MONEY DOUBLE DELIGHTS THAT WILL NOT DISAPPOINT.

VINTAGE ROUND-UP

Wine columnist and connoisseur DENNIS KNILL gives his views on two new releases from Jacobs Creek.

From modest plantings of 30 hectares of vines and a small underground cellar, Jacob’s Creek has emerged today as one of Australian’s finest wineries made famous for some of the world’s leading wine brands. Blame it all on Johann Gramp where in 1847 he planted the first commercial vineyards along the river banks of Jacobs Creek. Gramp and Sons was established soon after followed with the first vintage around 1850 and the beginning of 175 years of winemaking that continues to this day.

’21 Jacobs Creek Prosecco reserve RRP $16 a sparkling wine that’s all the rage in Italy. Light in body and balanced with incredible floral aromas and decidedly fresh citrus make this an easy drinking summer wine. Pair with prawns, lobster, sushi, cold meat cuts or an assortment of salami and prosciutto served up on a plate

’21 Jacobs Creek Rosie sauvignon blanc RRP $20 instantly appealing with its complexity and distinctive aromas and concentrated flavours of fresh ripe citrus giving a long dry finish that ticks all the boxes. Serve with chicken, seafood, smoked salmon and summer salad. A joy to drink with cheese or humus on flat bread

BALANCING ACT IN THE GROCERY AISLES

Set to impact our 2023 shopping are –restricted budgets, the need for balanced health and wellbeing, and the occasional small indulgence, says a report by United Fresh (www.unitedfresh.co.nz) that has been working with the entire value chain, from seed producer and grower to consumer for the last 30 years.

While the triple threat of inflation, international war and global supply chain issues will dominate household decisionmaking for the coming months as the realities of post-lockdown recovery set in, Kiwi shoppers have also started to prioritise investing in their health. In the fruit and vegetable aisle alone, 35 per cent of consumers surveyed towards the end of last year, reported increasing their spend on fresh produce for health reasons.

Almost half of all shoppers (45 per cent) believed their purchase behaviour had changed in the last 12 months.

Supermarkets and small retailers around the country have noticed these consumer behaviour shifts, shaping our pick of the top trends to watch for in 2023.

1. 1. 2. 2.
REPORT 2023:
TREND

THE COPYCAT COOK

With budgets tight, eating out is one of the first luxuries likely to be trimmed from weekly household expenses. Yet, Kiwi shoppers still yearn for the unique flavour combinations offered at their favourite restaurants or take-away. Enter the copycat trend – driven by social media channels featuring recipes that mimic the dishes served by famous chefs or easy ‘fake-away’ hits like fried cauliflower. Home cooks are keen to prepare restaurant-quality food without the cost or the added calories and salt. This trend has also been born out of a renewed confidence in the kitchen from spending so much time at home and has seen an increase in adventurous palates.

Recipes for food made ‘the old-fashioned way’ from scratch or ethnic specialties like aromatic curries and fermented vegetables are high on the list for home cooks.

CLIMATE AWARE

Extreme weather events that the country’s fruit and vegetable growers have battled with have brought home the impact of our changing climate. Despite the challenges in dialling back our emissions, a recent survey showed that 64 per cent of Kiwi

shoppers are unwilling to pay a premium for fruit and vegetables with sustainable practices.

However, consumer expectations for sustainability are rising. Expect demand for food producers and retailers to increase transparency around sustainable food practices and invest more in packaging initiatives to be a key trend this year.

Cultivated or plant-based ‘meat’ will continue to increase in popularity and decrease in price.

Climate campaigners should look to connect the twin goals of personal health and financial wellbeing with climatepositive actions to take advantage of this growing trend.

PLANT-BASED PASTA

Nearly every café in the country now has some sort of ‘plant-based’ dish in the cabinet, but pasta is the latest food category to be conquered by this planet-friendly movement. Overseas supermarket shelves are now home to a growing range of cauliflower gnocchi, chickpea penne and zoodles created with carrots, green banana, hearts of palm, zucchini and spaghetti squash. Kiwi retailers are joining the trend, an effective way to use up excess produce – reduce waste and increase the family’s vegetable consumption.

EASY BUT EXCITING

Meal prep kits continue to be a significant fixture for the grocery industry this year as consumers look for quick solutions to get dinner on the table after a busy day.

Alongside our increasingly global palates, expect kits in your local shops to feature more recipes for specialty food, exciting food combinations, sustainable packaging, and international dishes from around the world.

NICE AND ‘SWICY’

Nuanced heat that offers intense flavour with a spicy kick has been on trend for a few years, particularly

as Kiwi cooks embrace the flavours of international cuisine in combination with an increasing focus on vegetables rather than meat-based meals. Bottles of hot sauce are a staple in many Kiwi households as we add a chilli boost to everything from edamame beans to peaches.

This year expect spicy to get sweet. The ‘swicy’ trend sees the hot sauce category expand into honey, spreads, confectionary, drinks and snacks. Natural sweeteners such as maple syrup, dates and coconut sugar feature as a ‘healthy’ sugar hit.

Global inspiration will also hit the condiments market this year with sauces, oils and seasonings featuring West African, Mexican, Spanish and Indian flavours which pair beautifully with seasonal vegetables.

RETRO FLAVOURS

The nostalgia trend shifts into the grocery aisle this year as food companies take advantage of our yearning for simpler times. Comfort foods such as cauliflower cheese provide a sense of security in an increasingly disrupted world.

From fruit preserves to ice blocks and vegetable quiche, retro flavours, nostalgiafilled advertising campaigns, and brand collabs will do their best to remind us all of our childhood.

TikTok already has 31.3 million views for #vintagerecipes – though many come with a modern twist, comfort food without the calories.

TIKTOK TRENDING

When asked where they get inspiration to try new recipes, 46 percent of Kiwi shoppers said that apart from cookery books and magazines its online/social media. TikTok is dominating the digital space and is expected to continue to influence over 1 billion users this year.

Cooking hacks and recipes are creating new trends on a daily basis. Upcycling food by-products offers vital alternatives to the world’s ballooning food waste problem.

FLATT… OUT!

Especially handy for those who are flat tack and on the go, Flatto peaches may not look the prettiest but these sweeties taste divine. Available from supermarkets and fruit stores nationwide, these Otago-grown heirloom beauties come in white and gold varieties (RRP $4.955.95 per pack) but be quick as they won’t be in season for very long!

FLATTO PEACH, TOMATO & FETA SALAD

> 75g bulgar wheat, pearl couscous, orzo or quinoa

> 250g cherry tomatoes

> 400g Flatto peaches

> 1 chilli

> 1 garlic clove

> 1-2 pinches dried oregano

METHOD

> A handful of basil (leaves only)

> 120g feta

> 1 lemon

> 1 tbsp olive oil

> Sea salt

> Pepper (freshly ground)

FITTINGLY FROM A ‘KING’

Made from grapes grown in Australia’s King Valley, which boasts a climate similar to that of northern Italy, Brown Brothers’ Prosecco NV and Prosecco Rosé practically set the scene for get-togethers. These versatile wines (available nationwide) feature prosecco bubbles to help ‘scrub the palate’ between light and heavy courses.

PROSECCO SCONES

Thanks to Brown Brothers and Shellie Froidevaux (aka Iron Chef Shellie), here’s a tempting way to spice up some popular homemade treats.

> Four cups self-raising flour, sifted

> 300ml Brown Brothers Prosecco

Cook your chosen grain following the instructions on its packet and set aside. Halve cherry tomatoes and place them in large bowl. Halve the peaches, remove the stones and slice into think chunks. Halve the chilli (remove seeds and pith for less heat) and chop. Add the chilli and peaches into the bowl with the tomatoes.

Peel the garlic and grate it into the bowl. Add the oregano. Tear basil leaves and crumble feta into the mixture. Grate in the lemon zest and squeeze in its juice. Add olive oil along with a pinch each of salt and pepper. Fold the cooked grains in with the mixture, serve and enjoy!

> 300ml cream

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Sift flour into a large bowl, add cream and Brown Brothers Prosecco. Mix together with a fork, until combined.

Pat mixture onto a well-floured board, cut with floured scone cutter and place on baking tray. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Cool scones on trays and serve with jam. Add a dash of whipped cream and serve these sumptuous scones with a glass (or more!) of prosecco.

THE DO’S AND DON’TS OF OPEN HOMES

With over 20 years’ experience in the local area, ANGELA RUDLING from Bayleys Howick highlights the importance of a well organised Open Home.

Whether you are proudly selling your most cherished asset, your family home or if you are selling a rental investment property it is good to understand what to expect and what is important for Open Homes.

Firstly, let me explain that open homes are an open invitation to the buying public to view your property and it is vital it is presented in the very best way possible.

The fundamentals include health and safety, so care must be taken to evaluate trip or slip hazards, plus care around large ranch sliders or windows that could easily be walked into. Removable stickers can be applied in advance to mitigate the risk of injury and red cones can be used where there could be danger of falling off a terrace or elevated area which has no balustrade.

Once the property is ready and open homes begin, the agent is responsible for being at the property ahead of the advertised time to prepare the property for the public. They must ask all attendees to fill in a register either physical or electronic, to record the names and details off all attendees, for security reasons.

Normally open homes generate approximately 70 per cent more viewings than homes sold without. Depending on the price range of the property, all owners can decide if open homes are appropriate for their home.

Talk to your prospective agent and decide together which is the right system for your property. If you need confidential advice and would like to talk to Angela and some of her team members, feel free to call and we will arrange a free appraisal.

HIP HOPPERS: Pardon our French, but at least one English designer appears to believe a ‘bunny bum’ is just what the ‘doc’ ordered! This ‘cheeky’ light (pictured left) is bound to be a talking point as part of an Easter tea setting.

Standing 30cms high, this (not quite so) little, wooden rabbit is illuminated with a neon light delivering a quirky silhouette. A fitting centrepiece during Easter, it can also serve as a charming night light for children’s bedrooms.

FOR AVOIDING INVESTMENT SCAMS

It’s important to conduct your own due diligence to understand which opportunities are legitimate, which are too good to be true, and which are fraudulent. This article shouldn’t be read in lieu of financial advice and we always recommend talking to a financial adviser before making any investments.

QUESTIONS YOU NEED TO ASK:

> Are they a legitimate company with directors and offices in New Zealand? This information is publicly available on the Companies Office website.

> Are they on the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) watchlist? This is a list on the FMA website regularly updated with known investment scams.

> Are they licensed by the FMA to provide the services they offer? Before investing

with a company, it’s a good idea to check the FMA website to ensure they are licenced to operate in NZ.

> Do they have a real office that you can visit? A company without a local premise in New Zealand could be a sign of a fraudulent business.

> Can you sign up and view the investment opportunity in detail before investing? Understanding an investment opportunity and the risks involved is a key part of due diligence. Not having visibility over investment details could mean something fishy.

> Are the funds going into NZ bank account with an NZ IRD number? New Zealand investment companies should be dealing with New Zealand accounts, so be weary of any international money transfer requirements.

CAMPING IN WATER AT KOMODO NATIONAL PARK

A volcanic region of Indonesia and home to the world’s largest lizard, the Komodo dragon, the Komodo National Park is the only place you can visit creatures in the wild. Getting there is relatively easy with flights from Bali for around $60 each way.

There are liveaboard dive boats that operate in the area that are well worth the experience. I ended up hiring a private boat and crew—did four dives a day! It’s truly breath-taking! Even got to witness coral spawning turtles, manta rays and lion-fish that got a little too close for comfort.

The crew onboard diver’s paradise Komodo were very friendly and cooked amazing food with just a camp stove. The boats are mostly wooden. Having lived in super yachts, it took me a few days to adjust to it, but I loved every minute. The experience can be best described as camping on water.

For a day trip, I recommend getting on a fast boat and heading to Padar Island. The view from the top is epic with white, black and pink sand beaches. Be sure to stop at the pink beach, it’s beautiful!

From there it’s around 25mins to Komodo Island where you can watch the Komodo dragons and the food they hunt (mostly deer and pigs). Don’t get too close! They have shark-like teeth and venom that can kill a human within hours!

Until next time Selamat tinggal!
