ARTISTS HONOUR ESTUARY AND ECOLOGY
Once again entrants in the prestigious annual Estuary and Ecology Art award, hosted by the Malcolm Smith Gallery, Uxbridge Arts & Culture, in Howick, presented a rich and exciting range of contemporary work across various mediums.
When the outcome of insightful but difficult judging by Francis McWhannell was announced, it was five women who took out the top prizes (see pictured below) in front of appreciative guests who attended the awards ceremony early in July. An exhibition of work by the winners and finalists will be on display at the Malcolm Smith Gallery until August 28 during which time voting will be open for the People’s Choice Award sponsored by The Rice Family Partnership.

KIWI FARMERS’ GUIDE TO LIFE
Sharing the stories of Kiwi famers and their families, this book explores the highs and lows of making a life on, and a living from, the land. In addition to looking back at ‘the way we were’, Tim Fulton also focuses on the changing nature of our primary industries and how many deemed the backbone of New Zealand are holding up when faced with climate change and the need to feed an ever-growing population. A perfect read for farmers, this book should prove insightful to city folk too.

KNOCK KNOCK
When opportunity knocks, it’s wise to answer, but many of us are less than thrilled to see someone clutching a clipboard on our doorsteps. For more than 20 years, Trish Palmer was an interviewer and area manager for market research companies. As this witty book reveals, her encounters have been heartbreaking, wonderful and weird too, involving everything from bare bottoms, angry cats and foul-mouthed parrots, to the well-to-do and some who are barely managing to get by.

IN THE WARS
Born into conflict in Afghanistan and raised in refugee camps in Pakistan, Arian has been on the front lines his entire life. As this memoir reveals, after contracting a deadly disease and ‘experiencing the power of medicine’, he decided to dedicate his life to healing others. An inspiring book, In the Wars provides great insight into challenges most of us will never need to face and proves triumph is often born of adversity.

TIME TO SAY THANK-YOU
The tireless work of our community leaders is often done quietly behind the scenes. Howick Ward Councillor Sharon Stewart, QSM, says it’s appropriate to applaud their merits and here she recognises just three for their valuable contribution to our district – thank you for work well done!
