For a sharp and sophisticated take on spring style the Keen top and Move pants (far right) are a lesson in clever colour blocking and sleek silhouettes that cannot be ignored. On the other hand, the Floral sweat top and toning Platform pants (far left) are leisure perfect!
The playful print of the Interest dress or the bold smudge effect of the Nurture top teamed with Ketz-ke’s twin belted pant suggest early spring fashions are, indeed, the ideal ‘Game Plan.”

DRESS FINESSE!
Dresses have swung back big time into spring wardrobes – cool, feminine and stylish! Block colours remain popular but patterns, such as paisley and pretty florals, are in this season’s mix, influencing the tone of tops and blouses too.
This month, EastLife take a peep of Zebrano’s new season collection which showcases all the allure of seasonal trends. And, while it’s hard to look beyond ‘yes’ to the dress, when it comes to weekend leisure wear, pants stay firmly in the mix with shorter lengths, wider legs and splits offering versatility.

Mumma J’s –
TO MARKET, TO MARKET!
Growing interest in plant-based skin care products prompted breast cancer survivor, Julie Holder to formulate a healing oil followed by other products which she sells at Howick’s Saturday markets. HELEN PERRY talked to Julie about her Mumma J’s range which has hit a chord with many people including women, who like herself, have endured a mastectomy but not without scars.
Four years ago, Julie Holder was at crossroads in her life. She had just learned she might lose her job and then came the devastating news that she had breast cancer. After the initial shock, following by surgery and recovery, this Glenbrook ‘workaholic’ took stock of her life and set out on a new path.
“I’d heard people say that when you’re diagnosed with breast cancer you revaluate your life; it’s true, you do.”
And, like others unsettled by such a major shift in health, Julie moved in a new direction by changing her job 12 months after recovering from a mastectomy and breast reconstruction. She then looked for other ways to gain greater satisfaction in life.
Her daughter suggested training as a nail technician and, having always had an interest in health and beauty, Julie took her advice.
“I did the training but realised it would take time to build up a solid client base and to do so would mean giving up my regular job which wasn’t viable.
“However, I was doing a lot of running at the time and realised that I didn’t always smell that great after pounding the footpath. I have a certificate in aromatherapy and had long been interested in essential oils so, with that background, I set about formulating an environmentallyfriendly deodorant which suited me.
“But because I was more interested in healing and reducing the look of scar tissue, I turned to developing a cream, and then an oil, to not only help women scarred from mastectomies but also for others with scars resulting from burns or other accidents.”
Julie’s cream, which contains coconut, tamanu and calendula oils, has proved particularly beneficial for soothing rashes such as eczema and psoriasis but it is the oil she is most proud of.
“I call it ‘My Oil’ because dealing with scars of any kind is very personal and I wanted this product to feel personal to those using it. It includes rosehip and tamanu oil (from Pacific islands) and helps reduce redness and scar prominence.
“My surgeon recommended it to other breast cancer patients and I know many customers have found it helpful for a variety of scarring. The main thing is to persevere for longer than a week. Some people try it for a few days and because they see little improvement, they stop. Most products take time to have an effect.”
With two successful, products formulated under her Mumma J’s brand, Julie went on to extend her chemical-free, all natural skin care range which now includes a green tea and honey cleanser, facial exfoliator, moisturiser, toner and a light night oil.
“The night oil is good for softening and strengthening the skin but it also works well on acne too because it ‘tricks’ the skin into halting overproduction of sebum.”
Selling online through her website www.mummajs.co.nz and also at Howick’s Saturday street market Julie says she has been a market stall holder for the past 12 months and loves it.
“They are such a great group of people and market visitors have been very receptive to all-natural products. I’ve even fulfilled a few special requests such as developing an olive oil soap for one client and a nut-free oil for another. Selling at Howick, which is a busy market has been a sensible, less pressured move for a beginner like me.”
Julie also sells her own extensive range of essential oils and has customised these on request - “that’s the aromatherapy training coming out in me. I love working with essential oils because they can lift your mood, make you feel good and relieve the symptoms of some conditions.”
Furthermore, these days, Julie is feeling very good about herself and life.
“It took 12 months before I felt really recovered from the shock of breast cancer and subsequent surgery. It was then my husband Stan, who gives me the most amazing support, suggested our five bedroom, three bathroom, three level home and no kids was now much too big for us.
“We opted to move, put a pin in a map and draw a radius of 50 kilometres. We finally decided on Glenbrook and moved to a new home there two and a half years ago. Though initially hesitant, we just love it and wouldn’t go back west even through our children and grand-children would like us to.
“But, no, this is truly home. We love the countryside and, here, I’ve really learned to listen to my body and to sleep when I am tired.”
But to some it seems Julie is, in fact, tireless. She still works full time as an operations manager for a wholesaler, makes her skin care range at home and enjoys crossstitch when she can.
“I am busy but I make my products in small batches so they are always fresh and, actually, it can be very relaxing. I also use them myself, so gain all the benefits, too.
“The next step is to give up my job — but who knows when that will be — and concentrate full time on my business. I’d also like to find space in a local hair salon where I can do nails and perhaps market my products too. That would be ideal.”

BAREFACED BEAUTY WITH
VIVO!

In what feels like the dawn of a new age, it’s difficult to miss the buzz in the air surrounding women. A new, empowering mantra is emerging – ‘embrace yourself, love yourself, be yourself’.
Layering on the makeup is taking a backseat to a naturally beautiful look and clear skin means a smooth, fresh base for anything we put on it. Vivo wants nothing more than to encourage women to love the skin they’re in.
‘But my skin is not clear!’ we hear you protest. At Vivo, we understand. During these colder months, when complexions can appear ruddy and dehydrated, it’s tempting to focus on covering up those blemishes instead of healing them.
Nadia, Vivo’s Skin Therapist in Howick says, “Using the wrong products, or even too many, can mean skin can become inflamed, puffy and dermatitis-prone. With so many skincare options available, it can be a confusing maze of dead ends and wrong turns to find one that is right for you. But Vivo can help with your breakout breakthrough!”
Ellie-May from Vivo Botany adds, “By being strategic, and patient, with your skincare the need for foundation and other cover-ups can be eliminated.”
Vivo skin therapists are passionate when it comes to educating clients about their skin. An in-depth skin analysis is performed at your first visit to a Vivo Skin Clinic. This is then used by your therapist to design a treatment plan to help your skin go from ‘woe to glow’.

Vivo offers an extensive range of facials, peels and advanced skin treatment options, and a comprehensive array of carefully chosen cosmeceuticals.
A cosmeceutical is a skincare product containing compounds which are ‘alive’, such as essential oils or other biologically active ingredients which have pharmaceutical effects on the skin.
“We also provide our skin therapists with ongoing training, meaning they’re always up to date with the latest in beauty science and treatments,” Nadia says.
A particularly powerful and popular winter treatment offered by Vivo is its winter revitalisation facial, customised to each skin type to alleviate inflammation and reduce irritation whilst improving the skin’s hydration, texture, and tone.
“It’s perfect for these chillier days to soften and soothe rough, dehydrated skin revealing a smooth, more balanced complexion,” Nadia says “You’ll be ready to face the world, with a beautifully clear face, that is!”

A MORE aromatic dad!

There was a time when the scent of a man was all about sweat from a day’s toil. But today’s modern male has come a long way and is most likely to indulge in fragrant after shaves, colognes and even perfume.
What better time than Father’s Day to treat the man in your life? However, if fragrances are a new direction for him then he should tag along on the buying trip – there is much to learn.
To help those men starting to experiment here’s a guide to help navigate the dizzying variety of products available.
TYPES – All perfumed fragrances are made by mixing different ratios of essential oils (also called perfume essence) with alcohol. The more essential oils there are in a product, the longer the aroma lingers — and the more expensive the bottle is.
Here’s a breakdown as to how much essential oil is in these products:
• Eau de cologne:
three to five per cent
• Eau de toilette:
six to 12 per cent
• Eau de parfum:
13 to 19 per cent • Perfume: 20 to 40 per cent FRAGRANCES – The intensity of a fragrance should suit your man’s personality and style. The smell should bring up fond memories and feelings of confidence, security and calm. Fruity, aquatic and citrusy notes are great for those who want to project strength, spontaneity and fun. On the other hand, woody, spicy and earthy fragrances, on the other hand, allow the wearer to adopt an air of confidence, virility and mystery.
SAMPLING – Don’t try too many fragrances at once, otherwise it will become almost impossible to tell them apart. Once you’ve found something you like, apply some to the wrist and then wait until the next day to purchase. The delay will let you discern the complexities of the fragrance and decide whether you like wearing it. To start the search for a new fragrance, simply visit a nearby pharmacy, department store or cosmetic counter – knowledgeable staff will be able to help with your selection.
POST CONCUSSION VISION SYNDROME
Kristine Jensen, Eyes of Howick owner-optometrist talks about post concussion syndrome and its effects on the body including the eyes.
It’s that time of year to head to the mountains for some skiing or snowboarding, and given that we know brain injury can lead to lifelong adverse effects, I find it heartening to note how many of us are now wearing head protection on the slopes.
Effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) or concussion:
Headache, Nausea, Sleep problems, Fatigue, Brain fog and Memory issues, Dizziness.
Post-concussion syndrome and vision:
• Blurred or double vision- due to disruption of the accommodation (focusing) and convergence (eye-aiming) systems • Visual Field loss due to damage of the optic nerve or visual pathway of the brain • Eye movements or tracking- ability to accurately scan across a page of print • Vestibulo-ocular reflex – the balance system involving the eye-inner ear connection • Glare or light sensitivity – discomfort with stripy patterns, sunlight or indoor lighting or screens
What is concussion?
Concussion is a brain injury caused by movement of the brain within the skull either by a direct blow to the head, face, neck or torso or a whip-lash type injury. Brain cells are damaged leading to loss of function.
Signs of concussion:
• Brief loss of consciousness
immediately following the injury • Balance or co-ordination issues • Unequal pupil size or abnormal eye movement • Vomiting or seizure • Confusion, slurred speech or irritability • Inability to wake up
The first 2-3 days post injury is the most important time to monitor a loved one with head injury. However, in the case of mild concussion, the effects may not manifest for some days or even weeks. If you suspect concussion seek medical advice immediately.
About 80 percent of concussions will recover within three weeks with rest. However, the remaining will suffer Post-Concussion Syndrome.
How can we help?
If your symptoms are prolonged despite resting, a visit to an optometrist with an interest in brain injury or neurodevelopmental optometry is worthwhile.
Either temporary or permanent glasses may be prescribed to ease the focusing and eye-aiming demand on the visual system. As recovery occurs, visual training activities may also be implemented to restore comfort and function of the vision system.
Tinted lenses and antiglare coatings may also be applied to glasses to ease visual sensitivity.
