We are getting closer to the shortest day on the 21st June which means to me, Summer is on the way again, which is a very pleasant thought. Every year I’m sure its getting colder, or maybe I’m just getting older and forgetting, its probably a bit of both. Despite the cooler weather, enquiry levels and consequently sales seem to be tracking along well. With fewer homes on the market over Winter there is less competition so a great time to sell if you are thinking of coming to the market. Until next month, take care.

SOUPS (FOR) YOU, SIR! As the cold weather chills to the bone, it’s time to wrap up while we wrap our laughing gear around warming, nutritious soups. As our cover suggests, this month we have a recipe which is sure to have many a reader keen to try a taste of Thai – see page 33 And, if that’s not enough to put you in a ‘spin’, we have a Vitamix Ascent series blender up for grabs next page. so, hunker down, dig in and enjoy.

Brakes on rED LIGHT CAMErAs Luckless locals must be wondering whose side the Gods were on when news broke recently that of the two operational red light cameras in Auckland, one is on their doorstep – that is, at the junction of Botany rd and Te Irirangi and Ti rakau Drives.

personally confirm details as to why the nine AT erected cameras don’t work, the same radio presenter alluded to the police computers not having the technology to embrace the new cameras and no money to upgrade!

Despite Auckland Transport (AT) having numerous cameras set up to catch out those who think yellow means ‘go faster’, (including at the corners of Pigeon Mountain and Pakuranga road, Te Irirangi Drive and smales road, and Chapel road and stancombe roads), I’ve been given to understand they have not resulted in tickets being issued since late 2015.

so because tip-top technology isn’t much use until it’s switched on, Auckland’s red light runners have been given a reprieve (at least for the time being while re-calibration takes place). On the other hand, our local motorists are reminded that last ditch efforts to ‘make that light’ are likely to result in a fine of about $80 and 20 demerit points to boot.

According to Ministry of Transport figures, there were 12 fatal crashes and 149 serious injuries caused by drivers running red or yellow lights throughout New Zealand from 2009-2013.

On a lighter note, I must mention my most enjoyable Mother’s Day celebration at Volare Italian restaurant in The Gardens estate, Manurewa – a favourite where we often stop on our way home from work.

Furthermore, while AT’s website claims four deaths (and 75 serious injuries) between 2012 and 2016, I was appalled when a radio presenter reported that there had been five such deaths last year alone.

Booked out on this occasion, and extremely busy with several large groups, (including our own party of nine) nevertheless, staff handled the pressure brilliantly – meals and drinks came out quickly and with a smile!

I do hope others took time to appreciate the role of motherhood – their mum’s, their own and, perhaps, someone else special who has been very much a ‘second’ mum. We know it is a role that brings great joy, humour, and abiding love accompanied by trials and tribulations too! Hopefully, reading this month’s EastLife will be anything but a trial – enjoy!

Alps to Ocean by e-bike! E-bikes have opened up a whole new world for adventurers who prefer to pack and pedal but don’t have the confidence to manage the rigors of long journeys which rely solely on pedal power. However, one Howick local who rode from Mt Cook to Oamaru on an e-bike told HELEN PERRY that although it was no push-over, power assist has convinced her this a fun way for people of most ages and ability to see the best of the countryside.

Free-wheeling Charmaine Borland has done a fair bit of biking in her time – across New Zealand, Asia, and much of Europe – but the opportunity to follow the A2O – Alps to Ocean – on an e-bike set her in a new direction.

Flying first to Queenstown where they stayed overnight and also carried out a 44 kilometre training run – definitely recommended – the women were given a ride to Mt Cook the following day. They were then helicoptered to the A2O start.

Together with her sister-in-law, Kerry Meyer (Whitford) and Kerry’s sister-in-law, Sally Williams (Gold Coast), the three mates saw it as a way to see some spectacular New Zealand scenery on a budget.

“Some people drive to the start but I really recommend the helicopter ride – the views were outstanding and our bike were carried in the cradles under the chopper. We were there in no time,” Charmaine says, adding that one or more training runs and e-bike research were essential.

“Sally was in Queenstown late last year to paint and cycle some of the South Island but fell ill and returned home before she’d biked anywhere. Disappointed for her, the conversation came around to the A2O and next minute we had all committed to doing this trip together. We really didn’t anticipate how challenging – yet satisfying – it would be.”

12 | eastlife | june 2018

“It’s important to test battery life, recognise how to maximise power and calculate how luggage and personal weight will affect your ride. You can’t do the whole ride on power, you’d soon run out and then it’s push and pedal until you can recharge.

“We used power assist when the going got tough and pedalled where biking was easier. We also had to learn to use the gears – we had 10 on our bikes. “You just can’t do 425 kilometres [distance covered on the A2O] without the comfort seats and properly constructed bike pants. If you do, you’ll likely be very saddle sore; like one of us who thought she was practised enough to do without. Big mistake.” Despite ‘doing their research’ Charmaine confessed the three had no map and relied on road signs to follow route. “This meant we lost our way – twice,” she laughs. “The second time wasn’t too bad but that first time we thought we’d take a short cut then an hour later found we were on the wrong track, cycling

around the wrong lake and we lost a bike chain, too. That’s was the only time we were all a little short tempered. Luckily our preparation included learning to change of chain and a tyre!” Although some people opt to join organised tours with a leader and a transporter to carry their luggage to each stop where dinner bed and breakfast awaits, Charmaine says having decided to do the trip on a shoe string meant finding accommodation as they went. “But it was pretty well booked out everywhere. At one stop we had to share a mixed dormitory. That was interesting! “We shared with a Chinese tour leader, a young Swiss girl and a Spanish couple. I think we laughed all night. At another stop the three of us shared a small hut.” www.eastlife.co.nz

Although eating out was intended to be a treat only, Charmaine says it didn’t take long for sandwiches to look like a poor option when there was a seafood platter available.

Without doubt there was some tough riding as on the first 65km leg when the trio encountered about 5kms of road which was “like corrugated iron, testing our arm strength to the limit.

“We end ended up eating well, ensuring we had a wine at the end of the day and even managed to twice use a transporter for some luggage.

“We juddered through but it was the worst feeling in the world. I don’t think my arms have recovered, yet! Then there was the section where we just sunk down into deep gravel every few metres.”

“We also had one night occupying the ‘maids’ quarters’ at fabulous Burnside Lodge. This meant we had a bathroom, lounge and our own bedroom each. “It was a wonderful place to stay; like stepping back to the 1800s, the elegant 1800s, that is. We ate sumptuously – vegetables from the owners’ amazing garden – and we enjoyed their efforts to take us back in time.” www.eastlife.co.nz

However, the consensus was that small tribulations were no match for the stunning views and scenery encountered at every turn. “Yes, there were parts that were tough, but there was plenty of easy riding too and the chance to see such beauty….! “Apart from one day when the

wind blew and howled as we climbed to Tarnbrae high point, we had great weather which just made everything shine. “We saw places we never thought to see – the Elephant Rocks, riding through the Rakis Rail Tunnel, quaint Duntroon village and the wonderful Lake Benmore and Benmore Dam…the list just goes on.” As their ride neared an end the friends founded themselves in Kurnow the home town of All Black great, Richie McCaw – “his home pub was so welcoming to everyone who called in and, of course, we called in!” Then it was their night at Burnside Lodge before taking a bus from the outskirts of Oamaru to Christchurch and a flight home.

“It was an amazing five days. There were so many ‘bests’ and so many hilarious moments. Using the e-bikes meant we could actually do this ride. I don’t think I could have managed it on my less manoeuvrable mountain bike. “Having that extra ease on the tough parts was great. What’s more, back in Auckland a ‘fun’ ride from Howick to Hunua, tackling all those hills on our regular mountain bikes, further convinced me we could bike anywhere in New Zealand on e-bikes. “Being less strenuous and more time-efficient, they suit most age groups. As for us, the next plan is to cycle the Hawkes Bay – I’ve done this on my mountain bike but for sure it will be on e-bikes next time, hopefully with plenty of laughs included.” eastlife | june 2018 |

Step back in time! Beautiful Burnside Homestead located near Oamaru is often the last overnight stay for cyclists as they complete the popular Alps to Ocean ride, as it was for Howick local Charmaine Borland and her two companions (see story pages 12-13). The lifestyle of a 19th century Scottish gentleman can still be enjoyed today at Burnside Homestead, a category one registered historic home offering elegant bed and breakfast accommodation with traditional country fare. “We were quite overwhelmed by this stunning property and its charming owners, who dressed in period style,” says Charmaine Borland, who together with sisterin-law, Kerry Meyer and Kerry’s sister-in-law, Sally Williams, spent

a night there on completing their challenging A2O ride on e-bikes.

when the property was first settled by John Reid from Scotland.

“Being developed in the late 1890s, and in many ways little changed, it was a real step back in time. The architecture, including the amazing Great Hall, beautiful guest suites – all with modern facilities – sumptuous furnishings and lush gardens, impressed us no end.”

“In the main house accommodation included two suites, two queen bedrooms and the former servants’ quarters, a self-contained unit where we stayed,” Charmaine says. “In addition there was the detached Coach House, a rustic cottage catering for up to six people.”

Staying true to its opulent beginnings, the house still features antique furniture as well as many artifacts dating back to the 1860s

And, it seems, guests never fail to admire the hospitality – roaring open fires in the Great Hall come

winter, teas or breakfasts in the sun-drenched conservatory and dining at a 16-seater oak dining table. Tours of the homestead cover fascinating insights into life as it was more than a century ago. “The property’s extensive parklands with gardens and specimen trees as well as an orchard and vegetable garden, which supplied the kitchen, just added to this wonderful experience of another lifetime,” says Charmaine. “We loved our sojourn there and definitely recommend it”. www.eastlife.co.nz

Wedding day ‘menu’ serves up

love and happiness

Wedding day rain is generally hailed as a blessing not a blight so, the few drops of rain that fell on Tash Borland and Richie Howlett’s special day served only to widen smiles. A former Howick local, and well known owner of landmark restaurant, Szimpla which serves the Auckland Airport precinct, Tash looked stunning in an elegant silk

gown with an exquisite, delicately beaded bodice, as she joined Richie to make their wedding vows at Kumeu Valley Estate in April. The couple, who admit to meeting via Szimpla, were joined by 150 guests, including Richie’s family and many friends from the United Kingdom, together with members of Tash’s wider family whose

connection to the former Cock and Bull chain instilled in her a love of hospitality.

And just as importantly, Tash and Richie’s two well behaved dogs, Rex and Mika, were also there to make the day complete. “It was a beautiful, happy day and we just loved the rustic charm of

venue. Of course, having our dogs there made it extra special.” Although the couple, now living in Hunua, were unable to take a honeymoon at this time, they are planning an Argentina trip in October to fulfil their ambition to see the Iguazou National Park and Falls while exploring what they see as a fascinating country.

Art in the Clevedon artists no longer live a quiet life, secluded from the public while they create their life’s work. Well, certainly not the artists who participate in the Clevedon Art Trail. These artists have flung open their gallery doors and invite one and all to immerse themselves in the art of country living. JES MAGILL recently embarked on an artistic exploration in the area and loved what she saw.

The Wright stuff Tall Tane no piece of junk James Wright from Art Industry in Clevedon is one of six artists featured in Design Junkies, a six-part TV reality competition series which started on TVNZ early May. While reality TV isn’t really his thing, when James heard the brief was to produce an original work based around the theme Aotearoa – which is already the driving force for his own work – he took the plunge.

“Industry without art is brutality”, art scholar, John Ruskin said famously back in 1870, and artist/sculptors, Cheryl and James Wright from Art Industry in Clevedon couldn’t agree more. Any discussion on art in this picturesque village will inevitably mention the Wrights. Since establishing Art Industry in The Black Shed six years ago, the gallery and creative space has been a pivotal place for artists and artisans to show their work and gain support for their art. And, as the Wrights were transforming the former humble shed, they always intended that it be a gallery with a difference – one where various artworks could be acquired at affordable prices. Cheryl creates interior and exterior wall sculpture combining ceramic, corten steel and copper,

while James specialises in large scale pieces, some as tall as 6m, mainly in corten steel. Art Industry also offers a unique collection of sculpture, painting, jewellery, glass, ceramics, bronze, photography and prints by established and emerging artists. Many will recognise James’ work from high profile outdoor exhibitions such as Waiheke Sculpture on the Gulf and Sculpture in the Gardens at the Auckland Botanic Gardens. Several of his pieces are permanently on display there, having been purchased by the Friends of the Gardens. Back at Art Industry, James says The Black Shed exhibitors are an eclectic mix. “We feature local artists, and colleagues from around the country. Their work is often unique and hasn’t been

The six artists were encouraged to use recycled materials as much as possible and James’ entry called, Tane, which stands 4.3m high, was created from foraged pieces of steel, timber and bronze as well as recycled materials from his own back yard. “I had a vision of a very tall man, the Lord of the Forest, who encapsulated our culture,” he says. All six works will be auctioned at the completion of the series. Katie Blundell Artist with Paint the Town Grey.

Clevedon countryside Art trail beCkons Clevedon sure has a lot going for it; an idyllic valley with a stunning landscape which feels worlds away from the city yet is so close. This quaint village known among other things for its successful Clevedon Farmers Market, attracts a steady stream of visitors so it’s not surprising that it is home to artists who are inspired by what this beguiling community offers. Cheryl Wright, from Art Industry in Clevedon says though popular with tourists, it is still a destination visit. Cheryl and James Wright at home in Art Industry. released to others. For us, it’s really important that whatever we show is different and fresh.” Commenting on the health of New Zealand’s art scene in general, James says it’s growing all the time. “Art is becoming a bigger part of people’s budgets and

investments, for their landscaping and indoor outdoor flow because it creates an appealing focal piece for their own landscape. “Having something special puts a smile on their faces – it’s something they enjoy every time they come home. People buy

jewellery to adorn themselves, and in a similar way we buy art to enhance our landscapes.” Of installing commissioned works for clients, a proud James says, “it’s a privilege to share our art and culture in a way that represents and enhances our environment.”

exhibition dream come true When EastLife visited Katie Blundell Artist at her Clevedon Valley gallery and studio recently she was applying final brush strokes to a painting titled Grin and Bear It. It’s one of 20 works featuring her solo exhibition, Urban Jungle: Idioms Cityside, opening July 5 at the Railway Street Studios in Newmarket, Auckland. The painting depicts a bear with green eyes, which Katie explains symbolises the green eyed monster. “It’s a comment on New Zealand’s tall poppy syndrome. There are people in life who don’t really want you to do well, or rather, they do but they don’t. We’re constantly told to, ‘grin and bear it’, just keep going; that it’s easier to stay with the group and do what everyone else is doing.” www.eastlife.co.nz

Paint the Town Grey and Ahead of The Pack are other works lined up for the exhibition, which has recurrent themes of ambition and survival. “I get ideas from life and our urban jungle and, really, it’s about everybody just getting through it.” The Urban Jungle exhibition follows on from Katie’s largest solo exhibition. Held in 2016, Countryside Idioms, featured 44 works. “The idea for the show came from initially not knowing what an idiom was! English wasn’t my strong suit! But when I researched, I discovered that idioms are common themes humans struggle with. This really helped me explore the collective experience of being human; it’s a similar concept to Carl Jung’s theory of Collective Unconscious.

“The exhibition was a huge success and I said then I’d love to do an Idioms Cityside. So when Fiona Cable from Railway Street Studios offered me a solo exhibition, it was a dream come true.” Katie’s paintings are honest and clever with a humorous touch. “A collector once said of my art, ‘it’s like having pages of your diary’ and my paintings do have a little bit of my soul. I like that when looking at my earlier work, it takes me back to that time in my life.” One of three local artists who set up the Clevedon Arts Trail two years ago, Katie also teaches art classes and workshops for all ages. “I like to think about community needs and respond to them through my art”.

“We wanted to develop a way to bring more people to Clevedon and raise awareness of our local artists”, says Maureen Conquer from Forgotten Arts. Maureen, together with Cheryl and Katie Blundell, helped create the Clevedon Art Trail two years ago, an initiative funded and supported by the Franklin Local Board and Creative Communities NZ. “We’re a great little community and we wanted to bring more people out to see rural NZ at its best; there’s more awareness now,” Maureen says. Comprising eight local artists and creatives, members of the Art Trail regularly open their studios to the public and each year, they host an annual open weekend, running over Auckland’s Anniversary Weekend. The identifying symbol for participating galleries are 2m long steel arrows designed by James Wright from Art Industry. Prominently positioned on each property, they indicate ‘this marks the spot’ where unique art and artisanal works await discovery. Clevedonarttrail.co.nz eastlife | june 2018 |

BAD JELLY THE WITCH – 45TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION spike Milligan was nuts. Well, actually bonkers, round the twist and as mad as the mad hatter’s hat! And thank God for that! Although spike penned plenty of songs and stories to delight young ones – and mad old EastLife writers too! – perhaps none is as amazingly strange, delightful and weird as Bad Jelly the Witch. To mark the 45th anniversary of this more than just a fairly odd fairy story, a new gift pack has been released. In addition to a hardback copy of the book, the pack also features a CD of the BBC radio play for parents to recite (let’s face it!) while sharing the most beautiful gift of nonsense with the next generation. • Spike Milligan: Bad Jelly the Witch - 45th anniversary edition | RRP $28 | Puffin/Penguin Random House

New arrival TO THE FAMILy

rockabye Early Learning Centre takes the care and education of young children seriously. Today centre supervisor, LOUIsE sLADEN, talks about preparing first borns for a sibling. No matter how excited you are about the arrival of baby No 2, it’s natural to be worried about how your first born will cope once he/ she is no longer your one-and-only. Now is the time to embrace having only one child and here are some questions we are often asked.

gRANNY MCFLITTER, THE CHAMPION KNITTER

When is the right time to tell your first born about a new baby?

Trust Penguin NZ to publish a book about little blue penguins and the unsinkable grandmum who knits jumpers for them! In this delightful tale, Granny McFlitter doesn’t flinch following the wrecking of the rena and the oil spill which follows. Instead, Granny goes full speed ahead to help save the day in her own way. Complete with illustrations by storylines Gavin Bishop Award-winner, Lael Chisholm, this book is sure to warm many hearts... and feathers!

There’s not one right time or perfect way to tell a child about an impending sibling. In a nutshell, don’t tell them too early. From a child’s perspective, 6-9 months is a long time to wait. When discussing the new arrival, consider your own comfort level and your child’s maturity level. Preschoolers for example, may not grasp concepts of time, so maybe it would be more useful to explain that the baby will arrive close to a special occasion i.e Christmas or birthday.

• Heather Haylock & Lael Chisholm: Granny McFlitter, the Champion Knitter | RRP $19.99 | Picture Puffin / Penguin NZ

What are some ways my child can feel part of this new journey? • Go through your child’s baby pictures with them • Visit friends who have young children/babies • Pack a bag for the hospital with Mummy or Daddy • Encourage involvement in shopping for the new baby e.g. buying a special toy for the baby • Involve your child in thinking about potential baby names • Allow your child to accompany Mummy to the doctor for her scan and to hear the baby’s heartbeat. What about support crew?

NOODLE HEAD When Flippy and Floppy argue over a sweetie in this book (by best-selling author, Giles Andreae), the sublime quickly turns ridiculous. Interestingly enough, calling each other by such names as ‘silly sausage’, ‘smelly pants’ and (as the title suggests) ‘noodle head’ doesn’t do too much to resolve their differences, the duo soon discovers. From the author of Giraffes Can’t Dance comes this heart-warming, deceptively simple story. • Giles Andreae: Noodle Head | RRP $17.99 | Puffin

How do I prepare my child for a sibling? It’s hard for toddlers to understand what a new baby is all about. A helpful way to prepare them is by looking through your photo albums and talking about when he/she was tiny. Don’t tell your child that the new baby will be ‘a friend for you’ because for the first year or so, this is unlikely. From your child’s point of view the newcomer is more likely to be a hindrance before he/she becomes a best friend.

It is important to ensure your child is confident and happy with the people who will look after him/ her at the time the baby is born. Try to ensure quality time with grandparents, aunts and uncles or friends who are there to help. Finally, remember no matter how much you prepare your child for a brother or sister, her or she will still act out at times. These problems are a part of becoming an older sibling. Good luck with the new chapter!

SHOWTYM ADVENTURES Keeping up with someone who keeps up with the Kaimanawas is not so easy to do, especially when she’s busy penning children’s books! Following hard on the hooves of the first two best-selling books in this series, Kelly Wilson’s latest book, Casper, the Spirited Arabian, sees young heroine, Vicki, facing her biggest challenge yet. Can she turn a dangerous (yet misunderstood) pony into a showjumping star? Inspired by true stories from the Wilson sisters (of Keeping up with the Kaimanawas fame), these inspiring books are sure to be loved by children who are passionate about horses. • Kelly Wilson: Showtym Adventures – books 1,2 & 3 | RRP $14.99 each| Puffin/Penguin NZ

Q&A Helen Dorresteyn WITH

CLEVEDON VALLEy BUFFALO CO When buffalo cheeses come out on any night, they’re bound to result in smiles around the table. Since establishing the popular Clevedon Village Farmers Market and the Clevedon Valley Buffalo Co, Helen and Richard Dorresteyn have enjoyed more than just a taste of success, most recently named Supreme Champion at the Outstanding NZ Food Producer Awards. EastLife caught up with Helen to chat about life and a love of cheese. What makes buffalo cheese (in general) and your award-winning Marinated Buffalo variety (in particular) so popular? It’s definitely down to the milk – delicate, sweet and very creamy without being cloying on the palate. Our marinated buffalo cheese is unique. It has a velvety texture, it’s light and airy and has a full, rich flavour of buffalo milk as well as those from the marinade, which contains roast garlic, thyme and olive oil. Most people will eat it straight from the jar the first time but they soon discover just how versatile it is, using it in sandwiches, on crackers, or for dressing pastas, salads and vegetables and, of course, with grilled meats. The company has won numerous awards over the years. What makes this one so special? The Supreme Outstanding Award is a significant achievement. Winning means that in 2018 our Marinated Buffalo product is the best new artisanal product in New Zealand. It is always a thrill to have our efforts acknowledged; it gives people that have never tried buffalo milk yoghurt and cheese the incentive to do so. What’s your personal favourite from all the products your company produces? I love our mozzarella, particularly the bocconcini (means ‘small mouthful’). It is the perfect size for my lunch. It takes me on a romantic journey to the Amalfi coast and I love pairing it with whatever is in season in the www.eastlife.co.nz

garden – at the moment I’m grilling finely-sliced fennel and serving it with the bocconcini torn in half along with a couple of pieces of prosciutto. Why eat if not well? Your passion for buffalo cheese began during a trip to Italy 17 years ago; how did that lead to making your own cheese? We discovered fresh buffalo mozzarella in Naples – it was a revelation! We needed cheese for the Clevedon Farmers Market so decided to have a go at making our own. You can’t make a comparable product from cow’s milk and it can’t be genuinely fresh if imported, unless it’s flown in overnight. We bought our herd from Darwin in 2007 and now have approximately 130 animals, bred selectively for an improved temperament and to produce more milk. We need more land to grow the herd further. We have sold everything we have ever made and believe there is growth in the market for our products. Have Kiwi palates become more sophisticated over the years? Are the days of ‘meat & three veg’ long behind us?

loads of joy and opportunity to many with customers coming from all over for the atmosphere and produce. It’s been a phenomenal success as it has been built by stallholders and customers enjoying a unique and friendly shopping experience. I hope the market continues to help farms and food producers in the area thrive as it provides an important first step for them in marketing their produce. Are people increasingly looking to source food direct from producers? Yes. Anyone who has ever grown something to eat knows you can’t beat fresh produce! People should know where their food comes from and how it is processed. As it’s their health at stake, they should have the right to make qualified decisions about what they eat. Monty Python once (in)famously misquoted: ‘Blessed are the cheese makers’. How blessed do you feel?

I think Kiwis who love to eat fresh food are spoilt for choice these days and, when they cook, they are very adventurous. Despite today’s busy lifestyle, if you can make time to eat well with others at least once a day, your body and soul will thank you for it.

We are truly lucky that we have been able to make this idea a reality. Richard and I are very grateful that we work together so well. It is an exciting, challenging industry to be in and, while we are optimistic for the future, we have to be so careful to stay on the right track – there is no pot of gold to raid if things go wrong and there are many mouths to feed. Running such a business is a huge responsibility.

Since you established the Clevedon Village Farmers Market how successful has it been?

If you could grow any plant or raise any animal (real or imagined) what and why?

The market has bought bucket

I would have a large, swampy

native farm and raise Moa. I think it would be amazing to ride them! If you could be Minister for Agriculture for one day, what would you do first and why? I would duck and run for cover! Moving the country to sustainable farming practice is going to be so unpopular and expensive because many city folk won’t want to fund it and a lot of farmers won’t want to change. As a country we need to be making the most out of our primary sector, adding value and keeping our environment healthy, but that’s a tall and expensive order. If you could invite any three people (living or dead) to dinner, who and why? Also, what would you serve them? Mum – I miss her and she taught me to cook. Robyn Williams – he had a kind eye and was modest. Jamie Oliver – he has put himself out for kids’ health and I would like to hear him say ‘Pukka’ first hand! I would start with cherry mozzarella crumbed in panko, fried and served warm with an aperitif, followed by a Caesar-style salad dressed with marinated buffalo cheese, using sorrel leaves and cos lettuce, green tomatoes, bacon, quails eggs fried in olive oil and fresh herbs. The star course would be smoked and grilled duck with hazelnuts, butter pumpkin cream and kale, complemented by a very good bottle of Central Otago Pinot Noir. For dessert, tamarillos poached in red wine with our buffalo vanilla bean yoghurt. To finish, Brookwood chocolates. Yum! eastlife | june 2018 |

Inspired by the talents of some of New Zealand’s most watched young women, LEO+BE pays homage to a crew of these fashion-focused Kiwis in the label’s new season collection. Branded the ‘Age of Influence’, the winter range offers an edit of pieces each named after local digital identities who are shaping fashion conversation. Keen to inject playfulness into New

Zealand’s millennial fashion scene, sisters and designers, Jenny Drury and Brenda Wilkinson, developed the LEO+BE 2018 winter collection after observing that today’s consumers were more focused on local street style and inspiration than the seasonal disparity of the Northern Hemisphere. Kiwi girl, Cassidy Morris, introduced as LEO+BE’s first campaign model back in 2017, was hand-picked for

her alignment with the brand. Now, at the age of 24, she has recently been named the host of Bravo and has a feed that shows an unpolished, achievable eye into fashion. “More than just a style icon, the LEO+BE girl is a young, aspirational, 20-something woman ready to take on the world and all it has to offer,” Jenny says. Other local names featuring

in the collection include Ella Yelich-O’Connor (Lorde), former Bachelorette Matilda Rice and model Maddy Budd – brand fans can have fun working out which pieces are named after who. The collection features 27 readyto-wear styles for the ‘every girl’ – retro jeans and plush-faux fur bomber jackets mix with playful prints and casual cool beanies, skirts and separates.

Warding off winter lurgies! some say laughter is the best medicine but not when it comes to winter wellbeing – there are definitely much better ways to put up a defence against flu and cold bugs which are annually sent to test us. Of course our own immune system should be fighting fit, so to speak; after all it works to protect the body against infection. However, there are ways and means to ensure it is in good working order. Fever, coughs and a runny nose can increase the risk of dehydration so fluid intake is important. Tea, water and soup are all good to go but avoid drinking fruit juices, which generally contain large amounts of sugar. If you can’t resist, dilute with water (half and half) to reduce sugar intake. remember, bad bacteria feed off sugar and can make some symptoms worse.

about recommending electrolytes. Over winter keep up fruit and vegetable intakes as these are a good source of vitamins C & E and beta-carotene, much needed antioxidants which fight free radicals responsible for damaging cells and membranes. Exercise and sleep are both important. If you’re not already a fitness enthusiast, aim for half an hour of daily exercise including cardio but don’t over train and, don’t burn the candle at both ends. Opt for less screen time, which can reduce the quality of sleep, and ensure you get plenty of ‘shut-eye’ which will help to safeguard the immune system. What’s more, if you have succumbed to a cold or flu, sleep will help hasten your recovery.

The vein truth

– VArICOsE VEIN MyTHs BUsTED

REV vein specialists are now conveniently located at Ormiston Hospital in Botany Junction. Here Richard Evans talks about varicose vein myths and treatment. you get varicose veins by crossing your legs, don’t you? And the only way to get rid of them is to have an operation to have them stripped or pulled out? These are common misbeliefs but they’re also what we call ‘varicose vein myths’. There’s certainly no need to have your veins stripped. Thankfully, this procedure has all but been banished to the archives. We use either laser or medical-grade glue treatments, which is pretty non-invasive stuff. Most people are up and about if not straight away at least the next day. And crossing your legs? The answer is varicose veins are usually hereditary so making sure you sit ‘uncrossed’ won’t make any difference. some people suggest waiting for treatments until the veins get bigger; to after you’ve had children; or until they start causing problems.

However, like most things, the sooner they are attended to, the better the outcome. Leaving varicose veins means they may become more ropey and harder to treat.

HOW LASER TREATMENT OR gLUE WORKS Using laser gently heats the vein and closes it off so blood can flow to healthy veins. The vein in question will then eventually fade. The same goes when we use

glue. Tiny amounts of glue are injected into the problem vein while we monitor the treatment on screen. When the glue is in place, we carefully apply a bit of pressure on the vein and that seals it. The vein hardens and is eventually absorbed by the body with blood naturally re-routing through to healthy veins. With visible varicose veins having effectively stopped working, no blood is flowing through there.

Having to wear compression stockings for months is another myth. you do have to wear compression stockings after treatment but only for 10 days max not for months. so, remember, ropey veins in the legs are not the result of sitting crosslegged all one’s life and, contrary to popular opinion, having varicose veins treated doesn’t involve an operation to have them stripped out.

Please contact me if you have varicose veins. No referral needed.

Putting a permanent smile on people’s faces Pro Tips

For someone who fainted at the sight of blood as a dental assistant at 16 years old, Ugie has come a long way. Her reputation as one of the top clinical dental technicians in Auckland and other parts of New Zealand precedes her. It was her love of aesthetics that led Ugie Moodley to put a permanent smile on people’s faces. You know you are in great hands as you hear Ms Moodley talk passionately about state-ofthe-art technology she uses to create a smile from prostheses the size of a little finger to that replacing all the teeth. “It is a blessing to be privy to all the new technology as it updates. Each course attended allows us to actually work with new materials and techniques, which makes being a clinical dental technician at this time very exciting and rewarding” she says, keeping herself updated by regularly attending workshops and courses. Most partial dentures have anchors called clasps which are used to retain the denture in your mouth. These can sometimes show and ruin a beautiful smile. “Now we are equipped with technology to resolve this. There are so many combinations that are now available that is hardly ever the same for each patient.

returned to NZ I was referred to Ugie at Niche Denture Centre by my sister-in-law and now I can smile confidently. In Mae Salvador fact I feel like smiling all the time. Thank you Ugie for my beautiful smile.”

If light metal frameworks have to be used you can be rest assured that they are nickel and beryllium free” she says. With more than 20 years of creating dentures it is no wonder Ugie has clients locally and around the world that sing her praises. Mae Salvador says “for me a smile is the prettiest thing a lady can wear. But I didn’t always feel that way. I had my previous set of dentures made overseas and I was embarrassed to smile. It was an awful feeling as they didn’t even work properly. When I

Pamela Harrison says “I am very happy with the service I received. I got exactly what I needed with great Pamela Harrison respect and friendliness. The best dental practice yet.” Niche Denture Centre has its own onsite laboratory which means you don’t have to wait a week sometimes more for a repair or a reline. These can be taken care of onsite, helping you back into your smile almost immediately. Niche Denture Centre is situated conveniently on ground level with ample parking right outside the building and easy to access even for clients on wheelchairs.

If the corners of your mouth are red and irritated, you may have a condition called Angular Cheilitis. This can be treated with a topical antifungal ointment but if the condition reappears it may be caused by the reduced vertical dimension of your dentures. Your dentures need to be checked on a regular basis, once or twice every 2 years. It is like WOF for your car only your dentures become a part of you and have to function far greater feats than your car.

At Niche Denture Centre the hot cure process is used to ensure 100% guaranteed quality dentures.

NIGHT DRIVING AND YOUR VISION WOF

While driving at night, light conditions are variable and can change rapidly. This ability to adapt to differing light levels will slow as we get older and some eye conditions impede this process.

4

Clean your windscreen – on the inside and out! That greasy film can be a real distraction, particularly where there are oncoming headlights and sun strike. Replace wiper blades as required and keep the washer bottle topped up.

To maximise your night driving:

1

6

2

Check your glasses – visit Eyes of Howick for a free glasses WOF including fit adjustment and ultrasonic cleaning. We can inspect the lenses for any defects which may impact your vision. Clean lenses daily to keep smudge-free.

3

Choose the right lens – ensure lenses have an anti-reflective coating; this improves light transmissibility through the lens and reduces disabling glare while night driving.

Use your headlights effectively – from 30 minutes before sundown and 30 minutes after sunrise. Don’t be hesitant to use high beam while travelling at night except when approaching and following other vehicles.

7

Avoid the glare – if you find glare from oncoming traffic is a problem, avert your eyes to the left side of the road to avoid this direct glare while at the same time remain aware of oncoming vehicles. Also, don’t travel at night with the internal vehicle light on as this will cause extra visual fatigue.

8

Slow down – drive at a speed so you can see the road at least two seconds ahead. If you have any queries about vision difficulties or your eyewear, we are always happy to help at Eyes of Howick. Here’s to happy and safe driving!

Clean your headlights – any dirt will reduce their effectiveness at night. Also, check for yellowing of any polycarbonate headlamp covers; this can be cleaned off with the appropriate product.

Have your eyes tested – regular eye exams ensure vision is at its best. Even small focusing errors can greatly affect night vision so, even if you meet the minimum vision requirement to drive without glasses, you may still experience difficulty with night driving. Conditions such as cataract can increase glare sensitivity when driving at night but can also decrease contrast of vision.

Owner-optometrist of Eyes of Howick, KRISTINE JENSEN talks about maximising your night driving experience. Dark winter months make night driving a challenge. It is a physiological fact that our vision is best in daylight so our eyes need all the help we can give them when night driving. We also need a full five minutes to adapt to the dark.

“Alzheimer’s is preventable and reversible”

What is a

tongue tie?

CLIVE PLUCKNETT, Naturopath, Bachelor Holistic Health Science, AdvDip Naturopathy, AdvDip Nutrition, AdvDip Western Herbal Medicine, PG Dip Cancer Nutrition Medicine, PG Dip Mental Health Nutrition, PG Dip AntiAgeing Medicine, MBA(Dist), BA, PG Dip Science. When I first heard the above words, I was excited. At the time, I was the CEO of a research and development organisation looking for new and innovative health therapies which worked. But, medical colleagues assured me that it was impossible to cure Alzheimer’s and the research I had discovered was quackery at best. To my shame, I left Alzheimer’s behind, moving on to other things. Several years later I met a delightful doctor at a conference. I listened to her Alzheimer’s story. Some years previously, her husband had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. In her words: “My husband is a very special man and I was not prepared to lose him”. Well connected in her profession, she contacted top global specialists and was appalled at the lack of effective treatments and lack of efforts to discover effective treatments other than a drug response. My doctor friend started at “ground zero”, reviewing the possible causes of Alzheimer’s and addressing them one by one. To cut a long story short, she got back her special man and last I heard they were living “happily ever after”.

This meeting started me on my own journey. Alzheimer’s is associated with a number of imbalances in the body. Here are a few: blood-sugar dysregulation, heavy metal toxicity, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation, high homocysteine levels, key microorganism species, atherosclerosis, poor detoxification pathways, key nutrient deficiencies. Around about now you may be asking the question: Well, if we know that these things are associated with Alzheimer’s, why are we not testing for them and fixing them and the disease?” Hmmm, try vested interests. There is a huge body of evidence showing that Dr Alzheimer’s original theories were correct and the road the drug companies have taken is wrong. Again, try vested interests. At bewell, our approach to Alzheimer’s is to first test brain function, then test for the imbalances associated with the disease. We then tailor a programme to the individual to address the imbalances and support the brain, measuring improvements as we go. See our website to follow the story of one of our Alzheimer’s clients.

Cherie Roberts – Lactation consultant IBCLC and Yvonne Vannoort – Dentist BDS Otago talk about tongue tie. Tongue tie is where the tongue and/or lip frenulum (the attachment under the tongue and to the top lip) is too tight, causing restrictions in the movement of the tongue and/or the lip. What problems can be associated with having a tongue tie? Tongue ties can lead to significant difficulty with key functions of breathing, eating, swallowing and speech. For babies, restriction of the tongue doesn’t allow correct tongue movement and they often struggle to breastfeed well. I can see a frenulum, does this mean I or my child has a tie? Having a lip or tongue frenulum is normal, a person experienced in treating these ties needs to assess what is normal and what is not. Once baby’s tongue tie is released will all symptoms disappear? A team approach is highly recommended to work towards achieving optimal outcomes after release. Every health care professional who releases oral restrictions should strongly recommend each infant works with a lactation consultant and body worker. In older children and adults other services may be suggested on top of body work such as speech therapy, oral myofacial therapy and breathing training.

Is there any benefit to having my tongue tie released now I am older or is it too late? It is never too late to have a tongue tie released. The younger you are the least amount of retraining your body needs to bring you back to normal function, but many adults find a great relief in symptoms from having their tongue ties released. Will having a tongue tie cause issues past breastfeeding? If the tongue cannot function properly due to restriction it could potentially lead to any of the following issues: • Speech difficulties • Behavioural problems • Clicking jaw/painful jaw/TMJ • Food trapping next to gums • Malocclusion – requires braces • Incorrect swallowing habits • Postural problems • Headaches and migraines • Reflux, colic, other digestive issues • Gingivitis and gum disease • Eating issues • Higher rates of decay • Sleep apnoea • Snoring • Enlarged tonsils and/or adenoids • Mouth breathing • Teeth grinding • Neck, back and facial pain • Incorrect palate development • Bedwetting

The perfect mix EastLife editor HELEN PErry seldom raves about products that cross her desk. However, the new Vitamix AsCENT series of high performance blenders had her applauding these versatile appliances. At a recent introduction to Vitamix, I sampled a delicious ‘hint of mint’ smoothie, followed by hot Thai ginger soup, a mixed nut butter and, finally, two types of ice cream, all unbelievably conjured up within minutes in the magical Vitamix AsCENT A3500i. Featuring a five programme setting meant, with the touch of a button, it was possible to have each creation table-ready in under

five to six minutes, the powerful motor easily pulverising hard or frozen ingredients to perfect consistencies. What’s more, I was completely floored by our serving of instant ‘hot’ soup, heated by ‘friction’ without the use of an actual element, and made with whole vegetables. This was followed a short time later by perfectly textured, creamy, cold, mango

While some readers may initially gasp at the price – rrP $1595 for the A3500i (used at the demonstration) and $1295 for the three setting, A2500i – after watching this quality appliance at work, I became an instant fan and could certainly see the value. What’s more, Vitamix blenders come with a 10-year warranty

suggesting they might just live up to their tagline, ‘dependable not disposable’. I could say a lot more about this kitchen super-hero, so suited to busy professionals and families on the go (and used throughout the food industry), but instead EastLife offers these recipes to those who already own a Vitamix blender or are tempted into buying one – like me!

HOT TOPIC!

BUFFALO CO COMES UP TRUMPS

some like it hot but, when it comes to authentic Mexican fare, Otis and sarah Frizzell have a sauce that’s practically sizzling! Ever since The Lucky Taco food truck first hit the streets, it’s been picking up fans and awards – most recently a 2018 Outstanding NZ Food Producers’ award thanks to its Habanero Hot sauce, available via theluckytaco.co.nz and selected supermarkets and specialty food stores. It seems Otis (a widely-recognised Kiwi artist and son of pop-artist, Dick Frizzell) is as creative in the kitchen as he is at an easel! Boasting more than just a touch of spice, this sauce has had plenty of tongues wagging – while requesting a little agua in efforts to cool off, perhaps?

you can make cheese until the cows come home (or at least when they do!) but it would take a bullish effort to best Clevedon Valley’s award-winning effort. recently claiming the Outstanding NZ Food Producer Awards’ supreme accolades, the local company’s Marinated Buffalo Cheese has given cause for many to smile. Ideal in salads, pastas, on veggies, or simply as a spread, this fantastic fromage pays homage to classic flavours while proving that there is so much more to cheese than cheddar!

MORE THAN IT A-PEARS WAKE UP IN STYLE! An apple a day might keep the doctor away but a lovely ‘pear’ will always draw attention! For years now, somersby has been the life of the party thanks to its apple cider. Now, thanks to a ‘fruitful’ pear-ing, the brewer has a new variety designed to spice up one’s life. somersby Pear – which also includes apple – is crisp, delightful and available from liquor stores and supermarkets nationwide – rrP $24.99 per 12 pack of 330ml bottles, 4.5% APV.

Tasty way to help lower cholesterol It’s well known that high blood cholesterol can cause cardiovascular disease and Kiwis have some of the highest average cholesterol levels in the world. With our health in mind, Harraways has developed Harraways Oat-activ® a new fortified, single serve oats mix and a New Zealand first for hot breakfast cereal. It delivers a ‘double action’ in reducing blood cholesterol levels via the addition of natural plant sterols, combined with beta glucan (a soluble fibre, naturally occurring in oats). Both plant sterols and beta glucan are scientifically proven to reduce cholesterol absorption based on daily intake of 3g of beta glucan or 2g of plant sterols. The Harraways Oat-activ® range comes in two flavours – Original and Cranberry – with single sachet packs (rrP $6.99) available from New World and Pak’nsave stores. For best results, it is recommended two Oat-activ® sachets are consumed per day. recipes feature on the packs so this can be easily achieved at breakfast time and during the day as smoothie or snack so why not try these easy, but delicious Chia, Almond and Cacoa Balls.

New kids off the old ‘bloc’ EASTERN PROMISE: Since the hammer and sickle fell, artistic design has been revealed behind the iron curtain. Victoriya Yakusha’s Faina Collection sets aside a world of austere, strictly functional, manmade design to prove that nature will always, ultimately, ‘Trump’ politics. The Ukrainian designer says Faina was inspired by such basic “living elements” as clay, willow vines, flax, felt, wool and wood. “We listened to ‘eternity’ and the voices of the earth,” Victoriya

explains. “We chose materials; we did not look for forms, we ‘remembered’ them, because they are intuitively familiar to everyone.” Another of the “living elements” she credits for inspiration is hemp, which makes perfect sense to us after reading her description! From cabinets to occasional tables and chairs, the Faina Collection is ‘living’ proof that creativity is alive and thriving in eastern Europe. Ramming it home! Beachlands couple Joel and Rochelle Payne are in the middle of a three-year project to build a healthy, space-efficient home and target the Living Building Challenge, a certification process set up by the International Living Future Institute. As part of their effort they hosted a week-long workshop for artists from the Te Hononga-Hundertwasser Park Centre, Kawakawa, to build a rammed earth wall at the property. When Joel and Rochelle Payne’s neighbours agreed to let the couple pull down an existing boundary fence and build a new rammed earth wall they knew they were in for a huge amount of noise – not ideal with a new baby in the house. However, the neighbourly Brinkley’s happily gave the thumbs up! Subsequently, the Payne’s four-day

workshop in April during saw them and the Te Hononga-Hundertwasser artists experimenting with different colours and textures of rammed earth whilst erecting the wall. “Rammed earth walls are constructed by ramming a mixture of selected aggregates, including the likes of gravel, sand, silt, cement and a small amount of

the help of family and friends – the artists arrived to learn as much as possible about the construction potential of rammed earth.

“In total it took us about two weeks because first we had to pull down the existing fence and then pour new footings. Next came the 18 metres of formwork to hold the rammed earth. Once done – with

fun trying to create different hues with the oxides. “That was the first time that we had played around with greens and blues and by adding a little white cement it really allowed the colours to pop. Interestingly, while grey cement ‘fought’ with some of the oxides, the white cement gave a great result.”

Rochelle says the group also took time to experiment with textures – “we threw glass and seashells into the wall to see what would happen. The glass didn’t turn out as hoped, but the shells gave an amazing result!” Initially the Paynes had hoped to be part of a Grand Designs television programme but were turned down.

on rammed earth which makes our decision about exterior house wall colours so much easier.

“In many ways that’s a good thing as the decision meant we didn’t have to finish the house by September 18 this year and, in hindsight, we would have been struggling. “On the other hand, the boundary wall project has helped enormously as it has clearly shown us a range of colour palettes and how they look

“It also means we can take a bit more time perfecting green elements of the house so it meets the high standards of the Living Building Challenge. It’s all go and while the Challenge is indeed challenging, it also very satisfying.”

Polo’ on ice Flying south for the winter is not unusual, but exchanging life in a Baltic sea nation for the south Pacific isn’t exactly common either, as JON rAWLINsON discovered when chatting with a local ice hockey veteran.

Estonian-born forward, Alex Polozov, aka Polo, is not one to get up on his high horse. With more than 130 points (goals and assists) in the New Zealand Ice Hockey League (NZIHL) to his name, this Estonian-born forward is remarkably down to earth. “I don’t keep it in mind. It’s just an official statistic,” he says. I suggest statistics are for fans, not players. He smiles. Chatting to Alex prior to the Botany swarm’s season opening double header against the Canterbury red Devils – off to a ‘flyer’, the swarm won both games – I ask if the growing gap between drinks (league titles) has made the team even more motivated to win this time around. “It definitely doesn’t make it any easier! It is frustrating, but it’s a new season and all teams start again from zero so everything’s in our hands,” he tells me. “We’ve been working really hard and we’re very passionate. Preparations have been going good. We have some new players and a [larger] roster so even the old guys know a spot in the team is not guaranteed.” since the NZIHL’s inaugural season in 2005, the swarm has secured four titles, but none since 2011. Last season the team finished a disappointing fourth in the fiveteam league. New head coach – Canadian-born former Ice Black, Ian Wannamaker – will want to make a big difference as the season progresses. In fact, it seems the sancta Maria College teacher is already making his mark(s). However, Alex knows the NZIHL is a tough league to master. “Ian’s a former swarm player so

42 | eastlife | june 2018

Alex Polozov with daughter, Victoria and his partner, Katya. he knows the team well. He brings fresh energy and ideas, also more of a physical, North American style,” Alex assures me. “We can beat any other team. We give it everything we have to win every year but it’s very competitive. We’ll try our best and see what happens.” In addition to competing in various eastern European leagues, Alex represented his native Estonia at two World Championships. He

moved to New Zealand and joined the Botany swarm soon after the Ice Blacks competed in Estonia in 2010 where he met with Elizabeth Hay – mother of swarm and Ice Blacks, Andrew, Josh and Oliver, and spouse of Grant, then NZ Ice Hockey president, now swarm GM. After that encounter, it wasn’t long before Alex upped ‘sticks’ to move down-under. “Before that, I knew nothing, honestly, nothing, about New Zealand!” he explains. “They’re just awesome; very nice

Photos Mike Froger

people. It’s very unusual to have three brothers on the same team. The [Hay] family brings all good things to New Zealand hockey.” since then, Alex has been an ‘import-ant’ part of the swarm’s attack. Originally an import, these days the Cockle Bay-based builder is considered local talent. Although Alex concedes import players can crowd the pathways of advancement in the game, he says they also play a vital role in raising standards. www.eastlife.co.nz

New Zealand is more popular now because guys who play here go back home and tell some stories about hockey and the lifestyle. It can make it more difficult [for emerging Kiwi talent] to get a spot in teams but if good players come here from [overseas], young players can learn a lot from them.”

HI-HO, sILVEr... AGAIN! In sport, silver is never as good as gold. For the second year running, the Ice Blacks finished second, missing out on promotion, in the Division 2, Group B World Championships. “We gave it everything to win,” Ice Blacks’ forward, Alex Polozov, says. “I am disappointed, yes. We didn’t go there to finish second, but it is what it is.” Next year, the Ice Blacks will be hoping to go one better and earn promotion. Only then will Alex have a shot at, finally, facing off against the country of his birth. “There are not many players in the world who have played for two national teams... it’s my dream to play for New Zealand against Estonia one day,” he confirms. Although he asserts the standard of hockey in New Zealand is on the rise, the pragmatic ‘Polo’ believes the Ice Blacks are far from ready to face off against such giants of the sport as the UsA, Canada, russia and sweden. “Nothing is impossible but it will take time,” he says. “realistically, it won’t be for years, but [we’re] heading in the right direction... We’ve seen some big progress in New Zealand hockey.”

“One hundred percent, I’ve made New Zealand my home now. It’s a nice lifestyle and people are good natured,” he says.

”Now aged 32, this ‘Polo’ is no pup but he’s far from ready to hang up his skates; it’s likely Alex will add plenty more NZIHL points to his already impressive tally.

“New Zealand is more popular now because guys who play here go back home and tell some stories about hockey and the lifestyle.

“I would like to play for five to eight more years, as long as I’m in good shape.

“It can make it more difficult [for emerging Kiwi talent] to get a spot in teams but if good players come here from [overseas], young players can learn a lot from them.

“We have [in the swarm], for example, KC Ball, who’s in his forties, so that shows it is possible to play for a long time in this game.”

www.eastlife.co.nz

Late this month, Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown will host teams from the UsA and Canada during the Ice Hockey Classic. Alex hopes to take part in at least one of the series’ curtain raisers – when the swarm meets cross-town rivals, the West Auckland Admirals, or as the NZIHL All stars take on the Ice Blacks. Either way, he anticipates the series will help motivate young players and build the game’s profile further. “I expect [the teams to deliver] a top class of hockey,” says Alex. “It’s always useful practice to watch a good game.” eastlife | june 2018 |

BOOsT yOUr BUsINEss sTOry WITH WEBWrITErs A lot of websites have weak, outdated content and nothing turns away potential customers faster, according to Jes Magill from WebWriters. “Often, business websites are put together in a hurry. If they’re part of a business start-up, the owners are generally frantic pulling together everything else which needs to be functioning for the first day of trade. However, one of the most important marketing tools for any business – achieving an effective website with quality content – can be overlooked in the rush,” Jes says. With a huge amount of marketing now done online, that means nearly every first experience a potential customer has of a business, is via its website.

Jes Magill from WebWriters: “If your website content is old and irrelevant, you could be losing business.”

44 | eastlife | june 2018

If that thought makes business owners feel uncomfortable, Jes reckons they could do with some help.

These days she specialises in helping owners promote their business in more compelling and effective ways.

“When technology started to make a real impact in the business world, we saw the arrival of websites, via the world wide web. Initially it was thought that it didn’t really matter what content a business posted online, so long as ‘something went up’,” Jes says.

“I specialise in website content creation and makeovers – writing fresh and engaging content and blogs for busy clients. I also create copy for e-newsletters and take short videos.

“Thankfully that’s no longer the case. When a website has just a few seconds to influence online visitors, it’s a no-brainer that the content – which in essence is the story of a business and what it does – needs to have impact, integrity and appeal.

“I write for print as well, and that’s anything from brochures, press releases and publicity for my clients in newspapers, magazines and online.” Jes also gathers testimonials from clients’ satisfied customers, and helps source stories and images for their Facebook pages.

“Today, there’s an entire industry around guiding content writers and web designers to follow best practice search engine optimisation, or sEO, to ensure relevant words are used and websites are effective.”

“I have a broad range of skills and experience across journalism, Pr, marketing and sales – and that’s a combination that certainly gives my clients added value when it comes to the services I provide.”

That’s where Jes comes in. she’s had years of writing experience. A regular contributor to EastLife, readers might also remember her from Our Homes TODAY, a long-running supplement in the Howick and Pakuranga Times where she was responsible for writing hundreds of stories and advertorials.

Cooling off continues ‘ Total Focus Principal, Greg Roy areinz, gives an update on the local real estate market happenings.

As we head into winter the real estate market is following suit and is also continuing its cooling off phase. Monthly sales figures for April, just released by REINZ, show that the median price for our local area, Eastern Beaches, dropped back to $995,500, the first time it’s been under the $1 million mark in 24 months. The median for March was $1,099,000 so we had a 9.3% drop over the month. In April 2017 the median was $1,110,000 so we are just over 10% down year-on-year. From the peak of the market, which was $1,140,000 in March 2017, we are down approx 13%. As I said last month, we appear to be bouncing all over the place but the general trend is that of prices

easing back. Sales volumes for the month were 116, well below the average of 162 for the past five years. As I write this realestate. co.nz is showing 403 properties for sale in the area which is slightly down from last month’s 441. Auckland overall saw a decrease in the median price down to $850,000, from last month’s $880,00 and marginally down – 0.6% – from $855,000 in April 2017. Auckland overall peaked in its median price in March 2017 at $900,000 so, currently, it is down approx 5.5%. Sales volumes for Auckland were 1854 – similar to last April’s 1810 – and of these 436 were sold by auction, compared to 559 properties in April 2017.

Nationally, the median rounded out at $550,000 which is down slightly from last month’s $560,000 but still up from last April’s $540,000. There were 6368 houses sold across the country in comparison to 5973 in April 2017, with 12 out of 16 regions seeing a year-onyear increase in the number of properties sold. Seven of those regions having double digit increases. Auctions are becoming a less popular method of sale across the country with 13.2% of all sales – 843 properties, selling under the hammer, down from April 2017, when 17.3% of properties were sold via auction. The number of properties available for sale nationally increased by a marginal 1.1% (from 25,988 to 26,269) compared to 12 months ago. We have found that there is a

I read somewhere recently that Treasury is forecasting that, on average nationally, house prices will rise by 2.8% in the year to June 2019 then 2% the following year, 3.4% in the year to June 2021, and 3.7% the year after that. We know Jacs The rumours are true... Neil Finn has joined Fleetwood Mac. Beyond that, we’ll ignore other rumours – recently spread on the trawling (sorry, that’s rolling!) grounds of social media – and focus on bona fide reports from the PM’s office. Because we ‘professional’ media people prefer to take the higher ground... and because we don’t like being sued! Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern with Andrew Tang.

People in glass aeroplanes If hypocrisy is a cardinal sin in the capital, perhaps Phil Twyford should be hung from the highest yardarm. Fortunately, because there are glass windows in ivory towers, Ms Ardern recently made a different... call.

By increasing the age for free doctors’ visits and prescriptions from 13 to 14 and expanding school-based health services, to insulation and heating grants for low-income home owners and more, Ms Ardern believes our country’s youngest will benefit.

“As Transport Minister it is even more important that Phil abides by civil aviation laws,” the PM said following revelations her Transport Minister made a phone call while on a plane.

“In a country as wealthy as ours, we have the opportunity and the obligation to ensure children are free from the burden of poverty. This Government is putting the wellbeing of children at the centre of everything we do.”

“It isn’t appropriate for him to have responsibility for the Civil Aviation Authority in the event that it investigates this incident, so it’s appropriate to transfer those responsibilities.” Mr Twford’s offer to resign wasn’t accepted by the PM. In 2014, National’s then Transport Minister, Gerry Brownlie, was sanctioned for breeching airport security; his resignation was also refused.

For art’s sake... However tough life (and taxes?) might get, it’s refreshing to know that those who paint pretty pictures can take a little smooth with the rough from this year’s budget. As Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, our PM has unveiled intentions to boost the arts. “Arts and culture are not a ‘nice to have’. They are an essential part of our individual, community and national identity. For too long they have been treated differently when it comes to sustainable growth, career paths and economic benefits,” she said. “My ambition for the Arts, Culture and Heritage portfolio is threefold – to have an environment where we no longer question the value of the arts, to have young people who consider careers in the arts as viable, and for all communities to have easy access to cultural experiences.”

ensure New Zealand becomes the best place in the world to be a child,” she said. “At the very least, children need a warm, dry place to call home, an education that sets them up for life, safe and supported families, and to be able to go to the doctor.”

Various New Zealand arts’ organisations are set to benefit from a hefty multi-million dollar war chest designed to fulfil aims including inspiring aspiring musicians and building better protections for heritage sites. “This Government is committed to improving New Zealanders’ wellbeing by nurturing talent, ensuring the cultural sector continues to grow and thrive and is accessible to everyone,” Ms Ardern added. Who says art doesn’t pay?

Gift that keeps on giving While Ms Ardern’s first budget appears to offer plenty for ‘paupers’, at least one prince recently benefited from the generosity of Kiwi taxpayers. However, unless our King-inwaiting (Prince Charles) were to run right off the rails, it’s unlikely Prince Harry will benefit directly from New Zealand’s wedding gift. “The couple were happy that their

wedding will be acknowledged in New Zealand by a donation to Pillars, which provides fantastic support to a group of very vulnerable children,” our PM said. Pillars, a New Zealand charity which supports the children of prisoners, will receive a whopping $5000 – that’s probably about ‘three pound fifty’ by Royal family or movie star standards. “This gift reflects the couple’s wish that as many people as possible benefit from the generosity of spirit that has been expressed in response to their engagement and wedding,” Ms Ardern added. “I wish them all the best for their very special day.”

Non-voters, big budget winners! In her first budget as Prime Minister, Ms Ardern has forked out more than just a mouthful for a certain sector of non-voting Kiwis. “The Coalition Government is committed to genuine change to

In addition, two “expert units” have been established to improve the lot of tots. The Child Poverty Unit and Child Wellbeing Unit will help the Government meet the aims of the Child Poverty Reduction Bill.

Great ‘Scot’, top swot! ‘Six of the best’ is not necessarily an unwelcome prize at New Zealand schools; in fact, it can be actively encouraged! Securing six New Zealand Scholarships, six Outstanding Scholarship awards and a Top Subject Scholar award in Economics, Andrew Tang has won the PM’s admiration, as well as this year’s Prime Minister’s Award for Academic Excellence. “Andrew’s accomplishment illustrates what can be attained through hard work and dedication, and the support of schools and whanau,” Ms Ardern said. “While studying at Scots College, Andrew achieved a remarkable amount at high levels in a range of sporting, cultural and community activities... [His] achievement is something he and his school can be extremely proud of.” www.eastlife.co.nz

One size does not fit all Issues for commercial tenants to consider when entering into an agreement to lease New Wynyard Wood partner, ARTHUR CHUNG, who specialises in property and construction law, highlights some key areas commercial tenants should consider when entering into agreements to lease With the number of new builds proceeding or planned in East Auckland, there will be opportunities for new businesses to open and existing businesses to relocate. Standard form agreements to lease and leases rarely cover all the important points tenants should consider. It is very important to have your lawyer check over an agreement before you commit. I briefly highlight some key issues for tenants when negotiating an agreement to lease. • Suitability of the Premises – Leases generally have an express provision excluding any warranty from the landlord as to the suitability of the premises. In addition to checking the physical suitability of the premises, you should also check the zoning, the building code and registered interests on the title to ensure that there are no restrictions which will affect your ability to trade from the premises. If a resource consent or other approvals is required, the agreement to lease should be

conditional on the tenant obtaining them on terms acceptable to the tenant. • Initial Term and renewals – A tenant generally wants certainty of a long lease tenure with the flexibility to move on if circumstances change. This is achieved by having an initial longer term followed by several shorter rights of renewal. When agreeing the initial term, consider what lease incentives the landlord is willing to give to secure you as a tenant, the capital cost to fit out the premises, and the minimum period required to achieve the desired economic return. Check for redevelopment rights in the lease which permit the landlord to terminate your lease early or relocation rights (which are common in retail leases). • Rent reviews – There are several options for rent reviews including market reviews, fixed rent increases, CPI reviews and percentage rent tied to gross sales or gross revenue. A tenant should understand the available options and the pros and cons of each.

• Landlord and tenant works – To avoid disputes after the agreement to lease is signed, it’s important to agree and record in writing at the outset: (1) what works are the responsibility of each party, (2) who pays for and owns the works, (3) the process for approving the design, (4) who is to obtain consents, (5) how the works will be sequenced and programmed, (6) what happens if there are delays. • Outgoings – A tenant should always get a breakdown of the outgoings to see what items are included and how they are allocated to the premises to confirm what is charged, and that the basis of allocation, is fair and in accordance with the lease. • Maintenance, reinstatement and make good – Other than rent and outgoings, the other main cost for a tenant will arise from maintenance, reinstatement and make good obligations. You will want to limit these as much as possible. Also, ensure the parties complete a premises condition report at the time of handover and have a complete list of landlord’s fixtures and fittings so there are no disputes later as to the condition of the premises on lease commencement. • Exclusivity – If you are a retailer

or service provider in a multitenancy development, try and secure an exclusivity provision preventing the landlord from leasing other tenancies to a direct competitor. • Branding and signage – Ideally, your proposed branding and signage should be approved by the landlord up front. If this is particularly important to you, the agreement should be conditional on the tenant getting all necessary consents and approvals for the branding and signage from the relevant authorities. • Guarantees – If you are giving personal or bank guarantees, ask that they be released on assignment. For personal guarantees, ask for a liability cap. The above list is not exhaustive and there may be other issues that would be relevant to your situation. If you are a tenant, seeking sound legal advice at the outset should be seen as an investment rather than an avoidable cost. If critical matters are addressed during negotiations, and the agreement reached is properly documented, you will greatly increase your chances of avoiding disputes and save costs over the term of the lease and when it ends.

All Blacks and Blues aspirations Since the halcyon days of Carlos Spencer’s tenure at 10, both Auckland’s provincial squad and the Blues have struggled to find a comparable successor; could a young Plummer become their ‘Mr fix-it’? JON RAWLINSON believes a certain rising star definitely has a sporting chance.

Mothers shouldn’t let their babies grow up to play rugby. It’s a vicious sport. But, aside from the concussions and muscle tears perhaps its most dangerous aspect is how long it can take for a career to build and how easily one can come crashing down. While Harry Plummer may have some all-important steps yet to take, this new Blues’ recruit and NZ Under 20s’ first-five has his eyes fixed on the ultimate prize. “[Becoming an All Black] is definitely the main goal,” he confirms. “Obviously, time will tell and situations may change. You definitely have to be [realistic] about it, but I hope to stay in New Zealand and live up to my aspirations.” Recently, the ‘Baby Blacks’ secured the annual Oceania Rugby Under 20 Championship. Beginning with a 97-0 thrashing of Tonga (Harry nailed 23 points in the process), NZ’s emerging talent followed up with a more modest hammering of Fiji (55-15) before despatching Australia 43-28 to claim a clean sweep. Next on the schedule is the World Rugby Under 20s Championship, which concludes June 17. Due to Under 20s’ selection

criteria – which results in a regular turnover of players – it’s extremely difficult to know which team has the edge in any given season. However, New Zealand teams have won six of the 10 competitions to date, and this year’s squad will likely benefit from the experience of a few ‘old’ hands, who were part of last year’s winning run. “It’ll definitely be very handy,” Harry confirms. “They obviously did something right to win last year, and win so convincingly. But we won’t be trying to replicate [the efforts] of anyone else. “We have our own world championship to win and if we do that, we’ll have done our job.” Despite growing up in Karaka, Harry donned Auckland’s blue and white hoops during the 2017 Mitre 10 Cup, claiming three caps last year. “As far back as I can remember, I cheered for Auckland, mainly because that’s where Dad’s from,” he says. “Auckland’s last game against Canterbury was my first start. They had a bumpy season with a lot of injuries and had been through about seven first-fives. I wasn’t expecting [to start] but playing

harry plumber

with, and against, a lot of Super Rugby players and All Blacks definitely motivated me to train harder, and it reminded me that next step up is a pretty big one.” The son of former Bucklands Beach couple, Mark and Jo Plummer, Harry has developed from quite the sporting pedigree; while Mark’s business (Physio Rehab Group) ensures Auckland rugby’s best receive top treatment, Jo is a Pilates instructor and former New Zealand water polo rep’. “Dad’s known the game inside out for 15 plus years so he’s been an awesome resource to draw on – and not just when I’ve been injured,” he says. “My parents have been really supportive. They’ve never pushed us into anything and backed us to the hilt. If we’re happy, they’re happy.” During the upcoming Mitre 10 Cup (begins Aug 16), the former NZ Schoolboys’ pivot hopes to develop his skills further, putting as much game time under his belt as possible. Beyond that, he will line up with the Blues. “The Blues have been a lot like Auckland, very supportive of me. Being in their environment for 10 weeks (during a training camp earlier this year) was very

humbling. To be offered a spot with them is quite a thrill.” A keen student of the game, Harry’s a fan of current and former All Blacks, Beauden Barrett and Daniel Carter. I suggest that if keeps tracking the way he is, one day, Barrett and Carter could become Plummer fans. “That would be pretty cool!” He laughs. “Obviously Beauden’s changed the game in terms of his attacking style. He’s proven there’s no substitute for speed and the ability to find space using attacking kicks. I’ve learnt a lot from watching him in particular.” Regardless of whether his ambitions to pass (in an All Black backline) are realised, a scholarship through Auckland rugby should help him pass his studies as he works towards securing a BCom at AUT. “Mum and Dad always said that, if I could get my education paid for through rugby, then I will have done pretty well,” adds Harry. “Having experienced a couple of injuries already, it’s pretty scary to think that it could be all over in the space of just one game. These days, rugby careers can be pretty short so you have to have something to fall back on.” www.eastlife.co.nz

One-stop-shop

for Auckland land development and subdivisions

F

or almost 50 years Fraser Thomas Ltd has been specialising in land development and subdivision design. With a strong team of experts, including chartered engineers and registered professional surveyors, clients really can’t help but be impressed by the company’s land development portfolio. Ranging in size from 2 to 200 lot subdivisions; urban, rural, infill, greenfields, brownfields; whatever type of development project, Fraser Thomas has done it all. Drawing on wide expertise in civil, environmental, structural and geotechnical engineering, resource management, contaminated land, planning and surveying, Fraser Thomas is your land development ‘one-stop-shop’. The team prides itself on staying at the forefront of the latest thinking in residential land development including urban design, working with the landform, low impact stormwater, and decentralised sewerage. Regularly working with external experts in other disciplines, such as urban designers, architects, landscape architects, traffic engineers, arborists and ecologist enables Fraser

Thomas’ experts to put together a team which can provide clients with all services required to complete land development projects. In ever-changing environments, Fraser Thomas has always stayed on top of resource management requirements and latest council developments. In recent years, the Auckland Unitary Plan has opened up development opportunities for many home-owners. The Unitary Plan has simplified the residential

zones throughout Auckland with six zones created to allow for different levels of housing intensity. Depending on which residential zone a property falls within there may be subdivision opportunities. This may be limited to only one additional dwelling depending on the zoning, area of your property, and the ability to service the property. Fraser Thomas is able to complete a desktop assessment of your property to provide you with a summary of any potential opportunities.
