aul Young, the newly elected, first-ever Asian Kiwi Councillor is on a new high, and it’s got nothing to do with the V energy drink he is sipping on.

Sleep-deprived ever since he got a call from the council on Thursday noon saying he had claimed the highest number of votes at the Auckland Council by-election for the Howick ward, he has been answering congratulatory calls and messages from council members, MPs and well-wishers locally as well as internationally.

Young won with 7631 votes ahead of Howick Local board member Jim Donald with 5830 votes.

He says he barely slept for an hour that night - or since.

On Saturday morning he was invited for tree planting at Riverina School.

Even before he can get officially sworn in on September 27 at the Auckland Town Hall, he has been inundated with invitations.

When the Times met him on Monday evening just before he was scheduled to attend his first Howick Local Board meeting, “not officially though since I am not as yet sworn in as a councillor,” Mr Young had spent the entire day being oriented at the city council, trying to find his way around – from the car park to the 26th floor – meeting councillors, having a one-on-one introduction with Mayor Phil Goff at

“It was so much information but everyone was so welcoming and supportive,” he says of his first day at the council.

Mr Young has lived in New Zealand for 30 years with his wife Rosana and two children Martin and Kelly, both

currently studying at Auckland University, with Martin studying Engineering and Kelly doing Law. While Mr Young has contested both the general as well as the Botany byelection in the past, he found himself sixth time lucky.

“Every year I gave it my best shot and was confident of winning, but this time I did win!”

He says he visited Ronald Chan, 83-year-old former founder of the Fruit World chain of green grocers to personally thank him. “This is the first time he voted after living here for 70 years. Henceforth, I think all candidates should visit him since he is a lucky charm,” he laughs.

And while the newly-elected councillor is buzzing with excitement, he says there is no time to celebrate.

“There is so much to learn and catch up on so that I can action things. The responsibility is huge.

“There will be another local body election next year, so I have to be a quick leaner.

“Being a councillor is not just a fancy title, its serious business,” says Mr Young, who has been in the event promotion business organising concerts and international musicians like Richard Clayderman to New Zealand.

He’s also been involved with bringing international entertainers to Sky City during Chinese New Year, as well as running a photography business in Somerville.

Mr Young says he is a proud Chinese Kiwi who will not be focusing on any particular group but will work hard for all Aucklanders. He wants everyone to approach him with problems so that he can help them.

At the last election, when two councillors were elected for Howick, Young won the third highest votes of 7046 after the late Dick Quax (15,516).

He has finally realised a long-held ambition to represent the area and take the simple message of better transportation, improved law and order, lower petrol prices and planning a shuttle bus for the area, to the Town Hall.

aul Young has won the Howick byelection to become Auckland Council’s first Asian councillor.

The final count shows 27.6 per cent of eligible locals – 28,120 people out of a possible 102,000 – bothered to vote.

Young will see him take up the role of Auckland Councillor for the Howick Ward, alongside current Councillor Sharon Stewart.

I am so happy for Paul, I’ve known him since was very young from when he ran the photo shop in Meadowlands and will be keeping in touch with him during his term to help with engagement and youth issues. He’s been an active and important member of our community for many years and after years of hard work in our community, he definitely deserves this position.

This election highlighted the need for more attendance at forums and engagement. We need to introduce by-laws to assure timewasters are sifted out. Candidates should have a prerequisite to at least show their face at one forum, have a Facebook/ webpage or at least be in the country, not remotely campaigning and relying purely on their families’ political status doesn’t constitute a campaign and should not be considered a candidate. I am obviously referring to Jessica and David Collings.

Young female candidates are constantly pushing to be heard and taken seriously, far more than the other candidates. Jessica’s campagin, or lack of, highlighted privilege, disempowered and make a mockery of young female candidates and both David and Jessica should

apologise to our community.

Historically there have been numerous groups that use the elections as an opportunity for free advertising such as the “Christians Against Abortion” during our 2016 mayoral elections. I hope next election these issues are highlighted and engagement improves. Looking forward to 2019 and, yes, I will run again!

egan Norton, a Year 5 student at Sunnyhills Primary School, may seem an unlikely rat catcher, but this 10-year-old from east Auckland has successfully caught four rodents in her back yard.

“The rats are killing all our native animals and I really like birds,” says Regan, who is not afraid of rats but thinks they are a nuisance as they endanger native animals.

However she admits that their tails “do freak her out” since “they have no fur on them”.

Regan’s school runs an Education for Sustainability programme, for all classes, with a specialist teacher and dedicated classroom.

She was inspired to start trapping after her Enviro lessons focused on how to encourage more native birds in the local area.

With her family, she attended the ‘Pestival’ hosted at the school with Auckland City Council and Enviroschools, where the importance of reducing pest species that attack birds was discussed and rat traps were given out.

Regan’s family is just one of many who trap in their backyards in an effort to save native birds.

The school’s involvement in the effort to save native birds, is not without controversy. An

I want to sincerely thank all of the people who voted for me, helped and supported my first election campaign and with encouragement.

It was a privilege and pleasure to talk with the thousands of Howickians who I met each day during the campaign, to hear their views on council-related matters, and many other issues. The school also held a farmers market, where the children sold the vegetables they had grown in the school’s edible gardens to fund a trap in the Thames Coast Kiwi Sanctuary.

The Sunnyhills School community follows the number of pests trapped on an app and the tally chart updated in school hall. Each pest trapped is seen as bettering a Kiwi’s chance of survival.

News from Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany Fighting for New Zealand’s employment law National believes a good industrial relations framework and a flexible labour market are critical to a strong and growing economy. That provides the best opportunities for employers and employees and is what we’re fighting hard for.

In Government we made sensible changes to employment law to make our country more flexible and open to business.

This helped us build an economy that was doing well for New Zealanders. We were creating over 10,000 jobs a month in the two years before the 2017 election, growth was on the rise, and business confidence was high.

The Government is proposing policies like big restrictions to the 90-day trial, allowing unions more powers to access workplaces, and less flexibility around how businesses negotiate with unions.

These changes are strongly opposed by business groups. They’ll make New Zealand less flexible and less open to business.

Labour’s planned changes are especially troubling for small business owners who do their best to keep afloat, manage their costs, and strive to grow and create more jobs. They have the least capacity

So why is the Labour-led Government proposing to change our employment law with policies that would make business less flexible, already causing a drop in business confidence?

Already the effect these proposals are having is obvious. Business confidence has reached record lows. Our economy’s growth is slowing. Costs are going up.

That’s why we’ve ramped up our opposition to this new Bill and proposed a range of changes to help get New Zealand back on track.

New Zealand’s current employment law is helping our economy grow and we don’t need a change.

We were creating over 10,000 jobs a month before late 2017.

•

Incomes rose on average $13,000 over the nine years the previous National Government was in charge.

Our proposed changes include retaining 90-day trials for all businesses, ensuring union officials have to get permission to enter a workplace, and ensuring businesses don’t have to pay union delegates for union tasks during paid hours.

We’re pushing hard to stop this Government making a colossal mistake – because otherwise it’s everyday Kiwis who will pay.

GMT acquires strategic site for $93m Goodman Property Trust (GMT), the NZX-listed industrial and office property owner, has bought the Foodstuffs Distribution Centre in Mt Roskill for $93 million.

Goodman (NZ), the manager of GMT, which owns Highbrook Business Park, said acquiring the asset extends its investment in the buoyant Auckland industrial market.

Located at 58-60 Roma Road, the 13.1-hectare property features 36,977 sq m of warehouse and office space together with associated yard and parking areas.

Chief executive officer John Dakin said the size of the property and the strategic location, makes it one of the city’s best industrial opportunities.

Close to the Waterview Tunnel in Mt Roskill, the property offers direct access to the motorway systems north, south and west.

Positioned at the northern end of SH20, close to the CBD and port, it complements GMT’s existing portfolio which is predominantly South Auckland-focused said Dakin.

“The population within a 20-minute delivery truck radius is estimated to be almost 700,000 people. With purchasing power of $21.3 billion, the surrounding consumer catchment makes it the ideal location for fulfilment and logistics companies,” he said.

Acquired on a lease-back arrangement, the existing facilities will be refurbished and reconfigured on expiry of the Foodstuffs lease in 2021.

With site coverage of less than 30 per cent and a light industrial zoning, the property also offers longer-term opportunity through intensification of use or redevelopment.

“With warehouse and logistics space already supply constrained, the growth of the city and the expansion of e-commerce is expected to drive future demand in this location,” said Dakin.

The unconditional acquisition is expected to settle in next month.

s you read this, Macleans College student is in Russia as part of the New Zealand team at the first International Economics Olympiad.

Barely had Yang Fan Yun returned from Tanzania after representing New Zealand at the International Biology Olympiad that he was preparing for an Economics Olympiad in Moscow from September 13 to 24.

“The International Biology Olympiad was held in Iran this year but due to political sanctions, student representatives from five countries including the US, UK, Canada, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand went instead to Tanzania and Malawi to carry out ecological research,” says Yang Fan, days prior to taking off to Russia.

Yang Fan will have less than a week to unpack his bags from his international sojourn, before the ace debater heads off to Hawaii.

“I’ve had this opportunity to represent New Zealand for debating at the Global Tourism Summit in Honolulu, Hawaii, to be held from September 30 to October 5,” he says. “I am one of the two Macleans College stu-

dents on the team.”

It’s not just international travel that takes up all his time.

The 17-year-old is allowed to take Wednesday’s off school because he is doing an internship as a research assistant at the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Auckland.

“I’m part of a community research project to do with molecular biology. It’s still at its introductory stage,” he says.

The young go-getter is also an active part of the Howick Youth Council.

“We’ve spearheaded an event to give 20 high school students in Howick an opportunity to get their First Aid Certificate free of charge,” he says.

Yang Fan is an accomplished musician and plays the cello for two of the school orchestras.

So how does he find time to participate and excel at so many activities?

He gives credit to his mum who nurtured a love for learning at an early age.

It’s a good sign for East Auckland Tourism C

harmaine Chapman, chair person of East Auckland Tourism met up with Auckland Transport to discuss signage at Half Moon Bay Ferry terminal.

She was joined by Paula Bennet, Business and Development manager at Auckland Transport as well as David Collings, chairman of Howick Local Board and Annette Smart who looks after sales and admin at East Auckland Tourism—at the soon-to-be completed Half Moon Bay Bus Terminus (October 14 is the tentative date) .

Bennet arrived by ferry in order to experience a visitors’ perspective of what greets passengers on their arrival at

the new Ferry and Bus Terminal.

East Auckland Tourism has been working with Auckland Transport towards installing a large map at this entry point to east Auckland.

This map will compliment Auckland Transport maps installed along the walkway, but will highlight the various hubs in the region that would be appealing to all type visitors, whether they are history buffs, foodies or fitness fanatics.

This type of information has been sorely lacking, and East Auckland Tourism is eager to provide informative maps in various important locations throughout the area.

The ladies at Poppies Books in Howick are fully embracing this important date in New Zealand’s history, doing their bit to relive history as the country marks the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand.

September 19 is the day the Electoral Act of 1893 was passed into law, the first country in the world to give women the vote, nearly 100 years ahead of other countries such as Switzerland where women were not permitted to vote until 1971.

The Rotary Club of Pakuranga is holding its trivia and auction night on Saturday October 6 at Edgewater College.

With lots of friendly banter and encouragement from the MC, teams will compete and put their trivia knowledge to the test to win great prizes and also raise money for a good cause.

To add to the fun, the evening will boast a WWI Centenary theme and everyone is encouraged to dress as relatives would have during WWI. The club’s previous trivia nights have always sold-out and have been a great fundraiser to provide continuing support for Life Education Trust Counties Manukau, Harold the Giraffe and other local projects.

President Duncan Loney of the Pakuranga Rotary Club says Life Education’s values align with those of Rotary.

“Life Education has been working in our community for many years, teaching and empowering children to make positive health and well-being choices. Our trivia nights are a fun and interactive way to help local charities achieve their goals across a wide sector” he said.

With a variety of auction prizes including Sam Smith concert tickets, a flight in a Percival Proctor plane, luxurious weekends away and lunch with Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown in Wellington, there is something for everyone to bid on.

omerville Intermediate student Gareth Choo won three prizes at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Science and Technology Fair with his original and technically advanced project `Electromagnetic Propulsion Launches the Future’.

Gareth’s science project that explores technology for cleaner transportation, won first prize in the Physical and Material World Category, Best in Innovation, Invention or Investigation and the Science Award Trust Prize.

Electromagnetic propulsion is an emerging technology that has many applications including launching rockets into space.

Like many young people these days, Gareth found inspiration on YouTube. “I found the world of electromagnetics and clean propulsion,” he says.“I built an electromagnetic launcher to test different materials for speed and efficiency. I discovered I could alter the electromagnetic flux and help projectiles gain speed and efficiency with magnets and springs.”

The judges of the fair were impressed

by Gareth’s level of understanding and his project’s technical skill.

The budding scientist used an Arduino microcontroller to accurately measure and record the speed of the launches. “I conducted several tests to see if I could come any closer to finding an energy efficient solution for reducing carbon waste in train systems.”

This isn’t the first project Gareth has done using Arduino.

Najam Haq, Young Engineers Workshop instructor, says, “Gareth has really taken the skills he’s acquired in our programs to the next level.”

At the Young Engineers Workshop, Gareth has been exposed to many types of technology and engineering but has

developed a real interest for electronics. He has built a few impressive projects from scratch including including a motor, a flashlight that runs from dead batteries and an autonomous robot.

Gareth says, “Winning this prize has inspired me to want to focus more on technology and science to find innovative solutions to problems that we face in the world.”

Jeff living, loving life with dementia ■■By Therese Henkin Twenty two years ago Howick local Jeff Attwood had a thriving business as an electronic engineer. He was fit and active and had just purchased his first Morris Minor car with big plans to restore and take it on a road trip around New Zealand.

But life had other plans for Jeff.

At age 54, he was diagnosed with early onset vascular dementia.

“Back then nobody knew about dementia and it was really hard to get people to understand what we were going through,” says Jeff’s wife Doreen.

“So many friends said to me, ‘but he looks perfectly fine.’ And it was sad because when you have a broken arm nobody questions it but when there is something wrong with your brain, people are sceptical.”

Jeff said he only had two options – give up or get on with it.

And it was an easy choice, he says. “It was a big adjustment but I really wanted to continue doing the things I loved,” he says.

He decided to start with the Morris Minor car he had purchased and after he retired he focused his energy on restoring the old classic.

He later went on to travel the length of the country in it and enter the car in several car shows where it has won a number of awards. Jeff, now 75, was able to keep driving for many years following his diagnosis and, until recently, did all his own banking at Westpac Howick.

It is the first bank in New Zealand to develop a dementiafriendly banking initiative where the people behind the counter are notified when a customer with dementia comes in so they can be more readily available to support their banking needs.

“It means so much to see people and businesses start to understand dementia and be patient and caring towards those living with it,” says Doreen.

Jeff has only recently handed over his banking to Doreen after a stroke made his cheque signature too shaky. The couple also made contact with Dementia Auckland and says the support they have received has been immense.

Jeff participates in Dementia Auckland’s Cognitive Stimulation Therapy classes to help manage his dementia and improve his quality of life.

Through Dementia Auckland the pair has been able to connect

Lisa Bracefield from Tyndale Park Christian School won first prize in the Year 9-13 Consumer Science category as well as the Best Year 9 project of the NIWA Manukau Region Science and Technology Fair.

With everyone getting cold and having a runny nose this winter, Lisa decided to work on the project to find out the softest and most absorbent tissue for the nose.

If you only blow your nose once and the tissue is already drenched, you have to get lots of tissues. When you have an absorbent tissue, you can blow your nose several times and the tissue will still not be drenched.

“I have specifically chosen 10 boxes of tissues that have no additives to them (to make them softer).

I also chose all the tissues that were the same sizes (or sometimes very close to the same size). By having these limitations, I can compare them more easily,” she says.

I presume that “ freedom campers “are people with vans or tents who arrive to enjoy free facilities .And I also presume [a terrible word ] that all people are welcome, no matter from where they arrive, including Kiwis like me. No doubt the council will clean up the areas on a daily basis so as to leave the areas ready for the next new arrivals or those who decide to stay for a few months?

I don’t see any detail re length of stay...maybe park up for the summer .

I love to see new people from all countries BUT think that the current suggestion is crazy.

O

ne hundred and sixty-eight Somerville Intermediate students had the time of their lives at last week’s AIMS Games in Tauranga. They had the chance to test themselves against over 10,000 other students from over 320 schools from across New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific.

The school is proud of the results but more importantly we are really proud of the way they conducted themselves both on and off the field.

The way we play the game is of far more importance.

In terms of results, the highlights were the Golf Team of Jordan Jones, Lucia Lee and Daniel Ko who won the

Team Stableford Cup, our Badminton Girls winning the Team Cup with our Boys Badminton finishing in second place in their team competition.

The Netball team finishing third out of 122 schools was another standout performance in what is one of the toughest events at AIMS. Nishika Jain came away with two gold medals, one as winner of Girls Badminton Singles and the other as part of the winning doubles combination with Katarina Ung. Dale and Kyran Evans-Parker finished as runners-up in the Boys’ Doubles in Badminton.

Lucia Lee scored second place in the Individual Stableford at Golf.

At the gymnastics event, the team of Zoe Parnell, Janelle Thackery and Rosetta Tanner won gold in the Rhythmic Teams event.

In Football and Futsal we competed hard. Our Boys Football team finished in eighth place, the Girls Football team ended in tenth, the Boys Futsal team ended the week in fifth place and our Girls Futsal finished

eighth. We also had competitors in BMX, 6-aside Hockey, Indoor Bowls, Squash, Tennis, Performance Groups (Aerobics, Cheerleading and Hip Hop), Multi Sport and Rock Climbing.

Overall, we finished in fifth place on the final Medal Table with two Team Cups, eight Gold, five Silver and one Bronze medal, which gave us a total of fourteen medals. Everyone associated with team is to be commended as a lot of hard work went into making this “the best week ever!”

“It takes a village to run a village” is the motto among volunteers at the Howick historical Village, a sentiment Charmaine Chapman can’t agree with more.

She describes her job as marketing and events team leader at the village as multi-faceted with no two days alike, looking after promotions and publicity, advertising, sales and marketing as well as tourism.

Charmaine is now also the chairperson of East Auckland Tourism and wears many hats. Her job involves working closely with ATEED and the Howick Local Board, and has expanded now to include Auckland Transport, Franklin Local board, Franklin Tourism, Clevedon business association and would like to work more closely with the Howick Business Association, driving the exciting East Auckland Tourism initiative.

Charmaine is a former teacher who arrived in New Zealand 20 years ago, from Durban, South Africa and lives in Howick.

The talented pianist discovered event marketing when she completed her Masters of Arts Management degree at Whitecliffe College of Arts

and design in Mount Eden, central Auckland.

“My motto in life is to be consistent and committed in everything I do, and if I can’t put 100 per cent effort in, then I re-evaluate and make changes.

I too have mastered the art of being persistent, nothing is easy and all good things take time. I’m very goal driven and always setting bigger and better targets for myself, sometimes I drive myself crazy, it’s a laugh.”

Charmaine and her team run the Meet the Villagers Live Days at the village each month as well as our popular Halloween evening on October 27.

She is constantly looking for new business and ways to increase the village income and believes that tourism out East is going to start bringing in more visitors, not only to the village but to all businesses out East, “we do need the businesses to support us in this for it to be successful”, she says.

“You will often hear me muttering ‘It’s all good fun!’ and that’s what keeps me going – laughter, taking wee breaks during the day, disturbing my staff with my funny (not) jokes and being mind-full.”

uckland Council has released the findings of an independent review into its capability to meet the demands of unprecedented growth in current and future building consent numbers.

The independent report – Review of the Auckland Council Building Consents Meeting Demand Programme was commissioned by Auckland Council to ensure that its plans and actions to address current and future challenges are robust and fit for purpose.

The findings, released this week, confirm that the council is on the right track but suggests it needs to accelerate efforts in key areas including forecasting, recruitment and systems to meet the demands of increasing consent numbers.

In the 2017/2018 financial year around 12,300 new dwellings were consented, the highest since September 2004 and the amount of commercial and industrial space consented in the last 12 months is 64 per cent more than the previous year.

Penny Pirrit, director of regulatory services, says Auckland’s unprecedented growth is driving the highest consents demand in a decade.

“In May 2018, about 1500 new residential dwellings were consented, a new record for that month which followed a similarly record-breaking result in the previous month.

“These record numbers are combined with consent applications taking longer to process because they are more complicated than ever before.

“The shift to more medium and higher density developments to accommodate the city’s growth means the number of housing units per consent application has increased by 10 per cent in the last 12 months,” says Mrs Pirrit.

This year the council started implementing the Meeting Demand programmewith projects to improve workflow management, monitoring and reporting.

The council also increased its external contracted resource by 30 per cent and has staff working significant overtime hours.

“Given the high volumes of consents and the increase in complex applications, the report identifies our staff are working hard to deliver results in a challenging and high pressure environment.

“However, we recognise that we are not currently meeting statutory timeframes or delivering the customer service that we are striving to achieve. However, we are proactively addressing the issues while also preparing for the future demands of Auckland’s unprecedented growth,” says Mrs Pirrit.

Recommendations

The report recommends a greater focus is needed to: ➤➤Refine and reposition the current Meeting Demand Programme ➤➤Improve forecasting ➤➤Scale up recruitment ➤➤Ensure fit for purpose systems ➤➤Form a dedicated team tasked with driving implementation of the programme.

“The council supports the report’s findings and many of its recommendations are already being delivered as part of our ongoing programme,” says Mrs Pirrit.

“The council has already set up a dedicated project team to prioritise and implement actions of the Meeting Demand programme.

“This includes development of a more sophisticated model to support better workforce planning, increasing staff resource by recruiting here and overseas and better utilising remote workers and private consultancies.

“We are always looking to improve our current systems to ensure they can meet the trends of larger volumes of more complex consents.

This includes integrating our systems for 95 per cent of our online building services to reduce effort, duplication, and errors by the end of November.

SWIMMING

Pak College shines at swim nationals Pakuranga College’s Swim Team continues to dominate the pool, after finishing their most successful New Zealand Secondary Schools Swimming Championships to date.

Eleven of Pakuranga College’s top swimmers travelled to Wellington at the weekend to compete at the four-day championship ending on Sunday.

In amongst more than 100 other school teams, 600 swimmers and 46 events, the team made their mark on the national stage.

By the end of the second day, the team had secured three gold medals, three silver medals and three bronze. They continued their good form and scored high with six gold, five silver and four bronze in the final two days.

The total medal haul of 24 ensured that Pakuranga College finished second overall co-ed school at the championship, and the five boys came in third out of 64 in the boys points trophy.

There were a few individual stand outs over the weekend, with Year 9 Michael Han getting 11 medals in the male 13-year-old age category, and Year 10 Ryan Oliver bringing home six medals in the male 15-year-old age group.

Howick Village Denture Studio Grand Opening It was all smiles at the opening of Howick Village Denture Studio on Wednesday night! Guests were treated with fine food and music at the Apothecary in Howick before heading over to the vibrant new studio to officially open the practice. It was also the unveiling of a stunning new artwork that was painted especially for the Studio by Taranaki master artist Ross Bennett.

Guests were treated to a tour of the new practice and were entertained

by Ray Bishop and band and by the special guest for the evening Mr Colin Mathura Jefree who delighted and dazzled with his wit and charm.
