he countdown to the second largest transport construction project in Auckland takes a major step forward this week with demolition underway.

Work began this week to remove 61 Auckland Council owned properties along the Panmure to Pakuranga stage of the AMETI Eastern Busway route.

The removal of properties on the northern side of Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road will finish by early 2019 to enable the main construction phase to start in March/ April 2019.

Mayor Phil Goff says, “AMETI is a priority transport project in Auckland. It will bring high frequency public transport to East Auckland along with significantly improved facilities for motorists and safer, faster connections for cyclists.

“Our teams are working at pace to start construction early next year and bring high frequency public transport to the fast-growing region of East Auckland.

“AMETI will better connect East Auckland with our transport network, unlocking housing development opportunities and boosting the local economy,” says Goff.

The construction phase will take approximately two-years to widen parts of Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road to create a dedicated, congestion-free busway, that will provide a similar style of service to the Northern Busway.

It will also involve transforming Panmure Roundabout into a safer signalised intersection, creation of new cycle and walking paths, improvements to public spaces and reserves, a second bridge across Tamaki River and several intersection upgrades.

When the $1.4 billion busway is fully operational, customers will be able to

travel between Botany and Britomart, by bus and train, in less than 40 minutes.

Fencing has been installed around the first properties to be removed at the corner of Pakuranga Road and Ti Rakau Drive and security and safety measures have been put in place to secure the other properties while the demolition work progresses.

Auckland Transport and Panuku have been working closely with social and housing organisations to ensure a smooth transition for tenants of these properties and neighbouring residents, says Auckland Transport (AT) spokesperson Matt Poland.

AT Project Director, Duncan Humphrey says this work will significantly increase the visibly of the project for those who live, work and travel through this area “While this progress is exciting and will result in vastly improved travel choices, journey times and reliability for East Aucklanders, we appreciate that there will be inconveniences and disruption caused by the removal of properties and imminent construction. We do have plans to minimise these impacts.”

This work coincides with public consultation activity for the Pakuranga to Botany stage of the project, including the Reeves Road Flyover , new station in Pakuranga and the continuation of the Eastern Busway and integrated cycling networks between Pakuranga Town Centre and Botany Town Centre.

Where the hell are we?

A

t this point in time, Jami-Lee Ross - rogue MP, renegade - is on his own, literally and figura-

tively.

He is now an independent MP. And having been ‘sectioned’ to a mental health facility at an Auckland Hospital by police at the weekend, and reportedly released to a friend’s care on Tuesday, he is isolated. He really is a lone wolf now, somewhere in the wilderness (outside of Auckland it seems).

The National Party will be quietly relieved. Ross must be too. It’s a time to lick their wounds.

How long this impromptu ceasefire continues between the former Botany MP and the National Party is unknown.

Ross announced last Friday on radio he wasn’t relinquishing his parliamentary seat after all. That was after saying in his surprise press conference (last Tuesday) he was chucking it in and standing as an independent in the ensuing by-election.

National publicly cut him loose (Tuesday last week after the caucus meeting).

Right now – if things remain unchanged – there will be no by-election. Ross will keep a firm grip on his electorate seat. The next general election isn’t until 2020.

The National Party may have expelled him from the party but that’s it. For now.

`A week a long time in politics’ ■■By Farida Master On Friday morning more than 140 National Party loyalists gathered at Howick Bowling Club for the SuperBlues meeting to be hosted by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross.

With the political earthquake that has shaken up the nation, everyone wanted to know what was happening to the Botany MP they had trusted and supported.

It was Ross who had organised the regular monthly meeting of senior Blues supporters, prior to the unfortunate turn of events.

But it was Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown, along with Hunua MP Andrew Bayly and MP from Hutt South Chris Bishop who spoke instead.

They reassured the National Party’s Advisory Group for Seniors that while they were all devastated by the sequence of events, the party had never been more united.

“We represent a party and its values and not ourselves,” the MPs said.

“Anyone who needs parliamentary support for things like ACC, law and order, immigration matters can come to us as neighbouring MPs.” After the meeting Brown, accompanied by Bishop and Bayly dropped in at the Times office to discuss how the electorate would be represented.

“The recent turn of events has had a huge impact on his family and we are worried about them as we are of Jami-Lee,” said Bayly.

Our thoughts are with Jami-Lee Ross and his family.

“But what hasn’t changed for us is the National’s Party’s dedication to the Botany Electorate, our continued focus on our core values and our focus on holding this Government to account.

“We appreciate that the people of Botany will feel let down. You elected a representative on the basis that they were a National MP,” he said.

“But now we move on from here with a focus on the economy and the impact of fuel prices.”

Brown and Bishop agreed saying they were behind the Leader of Opposition Simon Bridges.

Our focus will remain on holding the Government to account and working to represent our constituents,” said Brown.

At the National caucus meeting on Tuesday morning it was officially decided that Brown will act as National Party MP for Botany should the people in the electorate have any concerns that they want taken to Wellington.

Taiwan Day promises a lot of fun for family Centred around the theme of ‘Fun, Flavours and Friendship’, Taiwan Day on October 27 and 28 at the Aotea Square will include live music, multicultural performances, craft workshops, calligraphy, photographic exhibition, silk knotting, dragon dancing and a traditional fashion show.

While the Taiwanese are believed to have immigrated to Aotearoa mostly in the late 20th Century, their arrival in New Zealand goes back a little further than that.

“According to historical studies, the ancestors of New Zealand Maori originated from Taiwan over a thousand years ago,” says lead organiser Stella Lu. “This is a celebration of the old and new, and will give people a chance to experience a little bit of the land where

Maori come from.”

The live entertainment will include musical performances by Taiwanese indigenous artists Ado’ Kaliting Pacidal and Suming Rupi.

Ado’ Kaliting Pacidal is an actress, television host, songwriter, singer and an avid student of culture, known for her highly-popular album Sun and Moon and the hit film Panay.

Suming Rupi, meanwhile, is known both as a member of the band Totem and as a solo artist. Suming has received credit for introducing nonindigenous people to indigenous cultures through his craft.

There will be a line-up of stalls serving fried chicken, bubble tea, dumplings, fish ball soup, mochi, Taiwanese sausage, and hawker rolls.

A

t 10 years old, Alex Blong has seen more of the world than some

adults.

And it’s all thanks to a deck of cards and a unique mind sport.

Whitford resident Alex is one of fewer than 30 Kiwi kids who play the Pokemon Trading Card Game (Pokemon TCG) competitively.

And this year he has attended international competitions in Sydney, Brazil and America where he met and competed against players from across the world.

“You’d be amazed at how huge these international competitions are. And how seriously these kids take the game,” says Alex’s mum Sarah Blong.

“At first I just thought it was going to be a very expensive hobby, then I realised the card game actually requires lots of strategic thinking, mathematical knowledge and also builds a wide vocab.”

Sarah says she also knows of kids who have learnt to read by playing the game.

Every weekend Alex and a few other local kids join together to play together in league challenges hosted by

“I love this game because it really challenges me and there are always new strategies to learn,” says Alex.

Alex and his mum are hoping to encourage more kids to get involved in Pokemon TCG so that New Zealand Players have a larger community to compete against.

Alex, who has recently moved out of the junior league

and into the senior league, has only been playing competitively for little more than one year.

Earlier this year he was the highest ranked junior in Oceania and went on to rank second in Oceania by the end of the season.

Alex went on to qualify for three out of four of the major international championships with all expenses paid.

“Players earn points by playing in league challenges, those

children who are ranked in the top 8 in Oceania (NZ, Australia and Asia) get travel awards,” says Sarah.

“These allow players to attend the four International Pokemon events held in the Oceania, North America, South America and Europe across the season.”

Alex will be heading back to Sao Paulo, Brazil again in November to compete in the first international competition of the season.

This week Howick local Natasha Unkovich flew to Tokyo, Japan to take part in the 58th Miss International beauty pageant.

She will be competing against 70 girls from around the world.

For three weeks leading up to the final night on November 9, Unkovich will be attending women’s forums, tea ceremonies and visiting universities in Tokyo as part of her pageant duties.

Unkovich was named Miss international NZ at the Miss World NZ pageant in May this year.

fter years of waiting, GYP Properties Pte Ltd (GYPP) is pleased the design plans for the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI) Eastern Busway have now been made public.

With the release of the revised proposed plans, GYPP chief executive Stanley Tan says the company can now look to finalise its own designs for redevelopment of the Plaza and its four-hectare site. “Masterplans incorporating significant residential and retail buildings together with commercial, accommodation and entertainment activities will be further developed over the coming months.

“They will be released once the resource consent process, currently anticipated to be sometime in 2019, is underway.

In celebration of Queen E

ast Auckland’s popular local community radio station, East FM, is having another fundraising event, with an opening night screening of Bohemian Rhapsody, the biopic of the late Freddie Mercury and rock music super group Queen.

Freddie is widely considered as the world’s best rock singer and it was a sad loss to the music world when he died of HIV in 1991. Rami Malek plays the role of Freddie, and the cast will play several well-known characters such as David Bowie, Kenny Everett, Sir Bob Geldof, and the other members of Queen.

The film is full of music by Queen, as well as some songs performed by Malek. Other tracks are played by Marc Martel who visited New Zealand recently with his group The Queen Extravaganza.

East FM’s Promotion Manager, Tony King, says: “Fundraising is an essential part of keeping the radio station going and improving.

“We rely heavily on our amazing supporters, as we continue to bring real local radio to this fantastic community.

“In the past, generous contributions from local groups have enabled us to extend our coverage to other parts of

Auckland.

Time to recover from the shock Now the dust is settling and the destructive storm has passed, it’s time to breathe, rehabilitate and heal ■■By PJ (Phil) Taylor

T

he political hurricane that blew through our east Auckland community and the rest of the country last week left everyone completely wiped out, as the weather calmly changed and spring sprung into bloom.

Last Saturday, I had an opinion piece published by Times Online (www.times.co.nz). It called on Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross to ‘Stop mudslinging, for Botany’s sake’ (headline) - and its language was direct.

The theme was taking into consideration the emotional impact of actions on others – people not directly involved such as family, friends, colleagues and community.

Subsequent events of recent days, including with his being sectioned and put into mental health care, gives everyone - especially him - space and time for contemplation, and the chance to start understanding what did actually happen, the week’s events being that almost surreal.

Mistakes have been made, considerable hurt has been caused.

It’s now time for the beginning of righting the wrongs and the learning from the mistakes. Apologies

have been made and more need to keep coming, sincerely.

Everyone makes mistakes, even many, and a lot have been made on all sides of this political storm.

It’s time for the community and nation to rally with care for the victims, and for Jami-Lee to get the care he needs. There is a lot of meaningful, positive life ahead after this dark time.

Meanwhile, there is plenty in political circles to consider after this sorry saga.

It needs to be explained to the public what expenses and allowances MPs and elected members are entitled to and available – what’s acceptable?

Political parties, elected members and candidates need to be more careful about where they are getting their donations and funding from.

They should be checking who the people and entities are that they’re receiving money from, and what the expectations are from donors – what conditions are placed on the funding? Why is the donation coming?

Importantly, political players at all levels in this country need to be assessing how they conduct them-

Jami-Lee only ever wanted to be a politician, and he’s a product of his environment. The political world he’s involved in is responsible for creating what happened during last week’s tumultuous events.

The news media also has to look at the way it covers politics too, especially at national level, when often politicians are judged and reported on persona and behaviour, as opposed to the message they’re delivering and policies and stands they’re taking.

It takes a lot of consideration for someone to be convinced to stand in an election, to be a public representative of our neighbours and wider community.

If politics continues on the same path as it proceeded down last week, there will be fewer good, honest people with honourable intentions to serve being prepared to stand as a candidate. Lots of excitement on Georgian Black Sea The World Chess Federation has a new leader – and a local man was in Europe as part of the elections.

Every four years the World Chess Federation (FIDE) holds elections amongst its 189 member countries to determine a president and officials to oversee the running of World Chess.

The elections were on October 3 in the Georgian Black Sea resort Batumi and were fiercely contested between three candidates. Local chess organiser Paul Spiller (who is also the vicepresident of the NZ Chess Federation and president of the Oceania region) was Oceania’s first representative in a presidential election.

“It was a tough campaign and in the end my ticket (cleanhands4fide) headed by (English chess Grandmaster) Nigel Short strategically withdrew just before the election to encourage our supporters to vote for Russian former deputy Arkady

Dvorkovich in a move to end the hegemony of Georgios Makropoulas and his supporters,” Spiller – from Howick - said.

The strategy was timed perfectly and the Congress erupted in spontaneous celebration when the vote was returned as a 103 – 78 victory for Dvorkovich.

“A new era has dawned with Arkady announcing an injection of 20 million Euros over the next four years with at least 12m of this earmarked for chess development.

“I had a tough battle with my Oceania zone being split 4-4 between myself and my rival for presidency, Jamie Kenmure of Australia.

“The decision was resolved by a vote of the full Continental Asian Assembly that I won by a vote of 29-19. I will now work with Arkady’s team to improve resources for chess development in Oceania.”

Alphatech Systems is seeking an experienced permanent full-time Warehouse Sole-charge Person. This role consists of ~60% physical warehousing (inwards, storage, pick/pack & outwards goods) and ~40% documentation and admin, including stock takes.

The ideal person will have 5+ years’ experience working in goods receipt, pick and pack warehousing, using common enterprise ERP software.

We will require applicants to have: • High accuracy with maths & data entry • Excellent English communication skills • The ability to cope with a busy warehouse and delivery deadlines • Good fitness and health, with a positive “can-do” attitude This company team has a great culture and prides itself on fostering friendly and collaborative internal relationships. Ellerslie village, bus stops and train station are within a short walk.

Ioane inspires Auckland D

alton Papalii’s promotion to the All Blacks ahead of his immensely gifted Auckland team-mate Akira Ioane was because of his strong work ethic, both as an outstanding tackler and attacker.

It helped that the 1.93m, 113kg recently turned 21-year-old can play both openside and blindside flanker and probably No 8 if called upon.

Few, if any, forwards in New Zealand, can match the powerful Ioane’s attacking gifts, blessed as he is with speed, balance, a snappy sidestep. sharp swerve and a strong fend.

But what the national selectors wanted from him was better defence and a higher work rate which he belatedly delivered on home turf in Auckland’s impressive 38-17 Mitre Cup premiership semi-final triumph against Wellington last weekend.

Scoring two tries to cap a fine all-round game, Ioane’s man of the match performance bodes well for Auckland’s rising hopes in this Saturday’s Eden Park final against formidable Canterbury who have won the title 10 times in the last

11 years.

Relieving them of it won’t be easy. But in winning all but one of their games this season, Auckland have gelled into a strong team with a workaholic forward pack and exciting backs.

Halfback Jonathan Ruru and first-five Harry Plummer have combined well inside the incisive centre pairing of TJ Faiane and Tumua Manu.

Faiane has been absolutely brilliant at times in making breaks and setting up tries for impressive fullback Jordan Trainor and wings Salesi Rayasi and Melani Nanai.

At 105kg, left wing Rayasi has scored some stunning tries and with Auckland Rugby offering fans free admission for Saturday’s final, a good crowd should be at Eden Park as the home team chase their first title since 2007.

Meanwhile, Pakuranga club supporters will be hoping that the talented Papalii gets some game time on the northern tour despite probably being ranked fourth flanker behind the more experienced Ardie Savea, Liam Squire and Matt Todd.

Three medals for boxers This year’s Boxing New Zealand National Championships in Christchurch was a stand-out for east Auckland, with Pakuranga College students bringing home two golds and one silver medal.

Wendell Stanley proved too strong for his East Coast opponent, with the referee stopping the contest in the final round of the welterweight final.

Kheva Potatau controlled all the three rounds against his Central North Island opponent to win the Junior 52kg title. Tyler Moran also took silver in a hard-fought performance against Wellington’s Toby Jensen, ending in a 3-2 split decision.

imes have been tumultuous for the Football Ferns recently, with off field dramas becoming centre stage in the New Zealand media. The fallout from the departure of coach Andreas Heraf has become an unwelcome distraction in the players preparation for the upcoming OFC Nations cup in November.

The team is currently without a coach, and the search and selection process is underway at time of writing.

The New Caledonia-based tournament acts as a qualifier for the World Cup which will be held next year in France. One player keen to secure a seat on the flight to Noumea is Howick local Steph Skilton.

Skilton was a member of the New Zealand under 17 side at the 2010 Women’s World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago,

making two appearances. She played in all three of New Zealand’s games at the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan where they were eliminated at the group stages.

Most recently she has been tearing up the US college scene as a member of the Syracuse Orange, an experience Steph describes as “Crucial to my development as a footballer”.

Steph has had a taste of full international honours after debuting for the Ferns senior side in 2014 in a Cyprus Cup clash against Switzerland.

She is currently plying her trade in the middle of defence at centre back, after starting her career as centre forward, followed by a stint in the midfield. The upcoming games would see her locking horns with the likes of Tahiti, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and the Cook Islands.

East Auckland resident Steph Skilton is hoping to gain selection for the Football Ferns’ upcoming assignment in New Caledonia.

In the absence of traditional rivals Australia who follow a different route to qualification via the ASEAN Football Federation, Skilton sees Tahiti as “the most likely to give us a tough challenge”.

The coaching issues aside, 2018 has been a pioneering

year for women’s football in New Zealand with female players achieving a world first. New Zealand Football and the New Zealand Professional Footballers’ Association came to a decision over a new collective bargaining agreement which offers pay parity with the men’s All Whites.

The agreement offers match pay parity, equal prize money, equal rights for image use and business class travel while representing New Zealand.

Steph is excited by the developments in the women’s game, and welcomes the “long overdue changes for a side that is ranked inside the top 20 in the world”.

When coupled with other initiatives like the new Kate Sheppard Cup, and expansion to two full rounds of the Women’s National League, the future is bright for the beautiful game.
