E

ven as the raging controversy of Botany MP JamiLee Ross being accused

by Leader of Opposition Simon Bridges, as the leaker of travel expenses was being discussed on every news channel, a speech competition to select a Youth MP for Botany went ahead on Monday evening at the Howick Bowling Club.

While no one that evening knew the fate of the Mr Ross’ career to be decided by the National caucus the next morning, the young representatives from different colleges in the area- vied to represent him in Parliament as they spoke on the fiery topic `Should there be limits on free speech in a democratic society?’

Each Member of Parliament selects a young MP to represent them in Parliament for two days in July. The youth MP gets a chance to experience what it is to be in Parliament for two days.

The young speakers were judged by a motley group of Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Somerville, Rotary Club of Botany East Tamaki and Highbrook Rotary as well as the Lions Club and National Party loyalists.

The contenders for the Botany seat in Parliament were asked about their priority and goals, should they be chosen as Youth MP for Botany.

Kate Hatley from Botany Downs Secondary College was declared as a winner who will represent the Botany MP in Parliament.

She said her priority would be to encourage diversity and focus on mental health.

The Times had earlier written about Kate entering an international short film competition with her film From the Hospital Bed that captures some of her experiences of hitting rock bottom after falling off a skateboard and struggling to walk for two years.

The speech competition was run by Mr Ross’s staff, while television camera crews patiently kept vigil outside his new home waiting to get a comment from the 32-year-old MP about the explosive tweets on Mr Bridges unlawful activity.

As we go to press Ross has quit as National MP and is going to contest as an independent candidate from Botany.

Ross delivers evidence to cops Explosive allegations against “corrupt” Simon Bridges ■■By Therese Henkin, Nick Krause

E

mbattled MP Jami-Lee Ross yesterday reported National Party leader Simon Bridges to the Police for fraudulently handling party donations.

Ross, in a two-hour long meeting with three police detectives, played a voice recording of Bridges’ admitting knowledge of a $100,000 donation.

He has since released the voice recording on Twitter and Facebook.

Ross says there is evidence that Bridges declared and signed off on a donation submitted under a false name.

“He signed the piece of paper that said there was a donation from Cathedral Club. There is no such thing as Cathedral Club,” Ross says.

“It is simply implausible that he didn’t know what he was signing.”

Ross also categorically denies that he split up the $100,000 donation, saying he did not have the authority or access to the money to be able to do so.

His police visit follows through on a promise he made in a dramatic press conference on Tuesday in which he defended himself against a “corrupt” Simon Bridges.

Ross reiterated that he is not the leaker of the party leader’s travel expenses, an accusation which has snowballed into a full-blown political brawl between the two politicians.

He accused Bridges of having committed several breaches of the Electoral Act when allegedly manipulating party donations.

“It is unlawful to file a false return,” Ross told reporters in Parliament on Tuesday. “I believe Simon Bridges is a corrupt politician.

“The National Party has broken the law at the instructions of Simon Bridges.”

Ross resigned from the National Party and from his role as MP for Botany today forcing a by-election. He announced he will stand as an independent in the ensuing by-election.

He said the by-election will be a referendum in which voters could decide.

“I can no longer serve in a political party lead by a corrupt politician.”

Ross says Bridges launched a

smear campaign against him after he questioned several of Bridges leadership decisions.

Ross says the campaign “to push [him] out” ramped up three weeks ago when he was accused by Bridges of harassing four women, but said when he asked for details and evidence he was not given any. “[Simon Bridges] told me that if I kept asking for natural justice that it would not be just four women, he could get 15 women,” Ross said.

Ross said the news of such allegations was “devastating”.

This prompted Ross to take medical leave from parliament two weeks ago, inflaming innuendo around Ross and the leak.

Bridges has since down played the harassment allegations, saying it was “inappropriate behaviour” on

Ross’ part rather than harassment.

“I am now medically well again,” Ross told reporters.

Ross says he is confident he can win back the Botany seat on a track record of 15 years.

Bridges addressed Ross’s allegations in his own press conference, flanked by senior members of the National Party.

He referred to Ross as a lone wolf MP who did not have the best interest’ of New Zealander’s in mind.

He said the National Party Caucus unanimously voted to expel Ross.

Bridges also rejected the allegations Ross has made around the handling of political donations.

“I invite Jami-Lee Ross to take these matters to the Police and I invite the Police to investigate them fully and promptly. They will find the allegations are baseless,” Bridges said in a press release.

“We as a caucus are going to now draw a line under this. We will be resolutely strong and focused on the things that matter to New Zealanders.”

Ross’s explosive allegations follows an announcement from Bridges on Monday that Ross was identified as the person likely to have leaked his travel expenses, an accusation which Ross fiercely denied.

Bridges told media that “The report states that the evidence identified points to Jami-Lee Ross as being the person who sent the anonymous text message.”

Bridges says he, alongside deputy

leader Paula Bennett, visited Ross before the press conference to discuss the report and “gave him an opportunity to respond”.

Bridges says he “was not satisfied with [Ross’] explanation.”

The National Party leak investigation inquiry findings stated that Ross may be the leaker but cannot confirm with certainty.

The report then outlined a number of phone calls made by Ross which may link him to the leak.

“This evidence is not conclusive,” the report reads.

Meanwhile, Ross pre-empted Bridges announcement by fiercely denying the accusation in a series of tweets.

In one tweet Ross says, “Later today Simon Bridges is going to attempt to pin his leak inquiry on me. He cannot find who the actual leak is, so is attempting to use contact with my local Police area commander, and a journalist that is a friend (not Tova), as evidence that I am somehow involved.

“Some months ago I fell out with Simon. I have internally been questioning leadership decisions he was making,” he tweeted.

“Working on his instruction, he asked me to do things with election donations that broke the law.”

As we go to press Police confirmed that a complaint has been received at Wellington Central police station regarding the disclosure of political donations under the Electoral Act.

Papalii in All Black squad P

akuranga United Rugby Club’s Dalton Papalii, 21, has been named in the All Blacks.

Papalii, who also starred in the Saint Kentigern College 1st XV and made the NZ U20s in 2016, has this week been named in the All Blacks’ 32-man squad for the 2018 Vista Northern Tour, which kicks off in Japan on November 3.

Papalii gets his opportunity after an impressive Investec Super Rugby season followed by a strong Mitre 10 Cup season.

He comes in following injuries to Sam Cane (neck surgery) and the unavailability of Shannon Frizell and Tasman loose forward contender Jordan Taufua.

In addition to the 32-man squad, the All Blacks selectors have also named a wider squad of 19 players who will assemble in Japan following the Bledisloe Cup Test to prepare for the Test against Japan.

flair of skirts, the click of sticks (dandiyas), and sense of gaiety filled the air as women in colourful Indian regalia energetically danced the night away celebrating Navratri which heralds the arrival of Diwali, the biggest Indian Festival celebrated with gusto all over the world.

The Art of Living Foundation recently organised a Dandiya Night, Garba Dance, a traditional folk dance (from Gujarat and Rajasthan, India) for the community at the Howick Leisure Centre.

The nine days of the Navratri Festival pays obeisance to three Indian goddesses, starting with Durga the warrior goddess who drives away all evil, followed by Laxmi the Goddess of Wealth, both spiritual wealth and monetary; and Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge.

Neelu Taore of Art of Living who organised the two-day fun dance event says now that the free community event has become so popular, it is truly heartening to see people from different communities come along and partake in the celebration.

Diwali is on November 7.

Farewell exhibition for local artist After 16 years spent teaching hundreds of students and staging numerous student exhibitions from his Pakuranga studio, Tony Clarke is on the move.

To mark the occasion he will host his farewell exhibition Mementos II from October 23 to 29.

The artworks feature a wide range of mediums including charcoal drawings, watercolours and acrylics.

Subjects include scenes from Norfolk Island, native New Zealand birds, a young seal pup from the Kaikoura colony and a stunning Marilyn Monroe portrait from a portrait drawing workshop.

The exhibition will be open to the public from 10am - 4pm at 9 Ben Lomond Crescent Pakuranga.

Following this exhibition, Tony hopes to concentrate on his own painting and teach on a smaller scale.

Over the years he has seen many successes in his teaching with many of his students going on to sell their artwork and win numerous prizes and awards in local art competitions.

Some students have been with Tony for over 15 years and enjoy being part of the local art community that has built up over this time.

Tony will now run classes out of Uxbridge arts centre in Howick in 2019.

Pitch perfect and powerful voices ■■By Farida Master

T

he audience at Divas and Divos, Operatunity’s Daytime Concert at St Columba Church were treated to some of the best operatic voices in the business.

The Three Tenors of New Zealand, Bonaventure Allan-Moetaua, Derek Hill and Kalauni Pouvalu were outstanding with their powerful voices, rivalled only by sopranos Amanda Atlas and Susan Boland who were pitch perfect.

The performers were all accompanied by the talented principal repetiteur for New Zealand Opera David Kelly.

The concert played soaring tributes to the likes of Luciano Pavarotti, Maria Callas, Andrea Bocelli and Placido Domingo, all opera superstars.

Adding a different note to the concert was humour, film clips, interesting anecdotes, arias and ensembles that made these singers famous.

The Three Tenors were a popular operatic singing groupduring the 1990s and early 2000s, consisting of Spaniards Plácido Domingo and José Carreras and the iconic Italian Luciano Pavarotti.

Interestingly, there were times when the Operatunity singers would share a short clip of the maestros including Joan Sutherland, Maria Callas, Pavarotti, Caruso and Mario Lanza - and then take over singing from the clip - demonstrating well that these singers are a match to contend with.

There were plenty of great melodies like You are My Heart’s Delight, Pedro the Fisherman and You Raise me Up. The concert aptly ended with a beautiful rendition of Time to Say Goodbye and the Battle Hymn of the Republic.

Pestival at Mission Heights The vision of a pest-free Auckland is fast catching up with local schools.

Mission Heights Junior College will be hosting a Pestival on October 24 from 7.30-8.30pm. The evening is an opportunity for parents and friends to learn more about pest trapping in your backyard.

The Auckland Council will provide a rat trap to take home to use in your backyard for the duration of the project. There will also be a demonstration of

how to set and unset the traps.

Advice on placing of traps at home and disposal of the pests caught will be provided.

Village life takes the weight off for Ginny and Joe. Ginny and Joe May have hardly stopped smiling since they moved into their sunny serviced apartment at Howick’s Bruce McLaren Retirement Village.

In fact, says Ginny, Joe’s sisters commented that they haven’t seen their brother smile so much in years, such is the transformation that’s occurred.

The couple, who celebrated 63 years married on 1st October, had lived and run their engineering business at their Takanini home for almost as long but Ginny, 81, says it had started to become quite stressful.

“We felt like we were living on a desert island! Everybody that we knew had gone and it became a very lonely place.”

While Joe, 84, was reluctant to

leave his familiar surroundings, Ginny says it worried her that they had no-one nearby that they could turn to for help in the middle of the night.

“I was starting to feel unsafe and it was actually very scary.

“My daughter Annette had been saying for months we should move in here and then one day she texted to say she was taking us out to lunch.”

Conrming Ginny’s suspicions, Annette brought them for lunch at Bruce McLaren where they checked out a couple of apartments on the higher levels.

“He didn’t like going up in the lift and didn’t want anything to do with it so I had to say no.”

Another apartment came up, this time on the ground oor, but

Joe still wasn’t interested.

A few months later the same apartment came up again and this time he came and had a look.

“The moment we walked into this apartment he said ‘this is better’. The sun was pouring in, he could see what was out this window and that door and next he said ‘what do you have to do to make it happen?!

“The rest is history!”

They both love the way their warm, cosy corner apartment faces out over the bowling green and village entrance where they can watch all the comings and goings.

And Ginny loves the fact that the cleaning and linen is taken care of and there is a lovely cooked meal provided every day.

“There’s even a chap who mows the bit of grass out the front here, and we don’t have to do a thing!” she laughs.

Mind you, that hasn’t stopped them trying out the village’s many activities of course.

“We love the happy hour, they have had some great entertainment and we’ve been on a couple of outings – last week we went to Hampton Downs which was great.

“When my sisters used to visit us at Takanini they knew we’d always be there but now they have to ring rst just to make sure we’re in!” she laughs.

Adds Joe: “We haven’t got time for anything but enjoying ourselves. Anyone who could nd something to complain about

must have rocks in their head!”

Both Annette and their son in Melbourne are thrilled that their parents are both enjoying the benets of retirement living, and the security and peace of mind that comes with it.

“They’re absolutely delighted,” says Ginny. “Our son’s words were ‘you’re living in paradise!’

“It’s taken a lot of pressure off the family, a lot of the stress has just gone.

“We used to have a caravan up at Arkles Bay and we’d go up there on a Friday night and you’d sit down and go ‘Ahhhh’.

“And it was the same when we came here, we just relaxed and that loneliness was gone.”

Help Coastguard save 19 lives today Every year, nearly 7000 New Zealanders – 19 a day on average – are brought home safely from our seas, lakes and rivers after an emergency.

This prevents 18,000 children from losing their mum or dad, 11,000 grandparents from losing their grandchildren and 1.6 million of us from losing someone we know. And it’s all made possible by Kiwi institution Coastguard New Zealand, a charity run by over 2,000 volunteers all dedicated to saving lives, and families, on the water – a place where things can go very wrong, very quickly.

From October 15 – 28, Coastguard are appealing to the New Zealand public for donations to help them continue their life-saving efforts in providing professional marine and rescue services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days of the year.

Patrick Holmes, CEO of Coastguard NZ, says: “Coastguard volunteers give over 300,000 hours of their free time every year to make sure Kiwis can enjoy New Zealand’s magnificent waterways, secure in the knowledge that should anything go wrong, someone highly organised, trained and equipped will be there to help.

“Our volunteers will spring to the assistance of anyone in trouble – from a boat not starting or helping a kayaker or surfer in difficulty, to rescuing a man overboard, responding to an emergency flare, locating a drifting vessel or attending to a medical emergency at sea.

“October is the time when Kiwis get back on the water and we want everyone to know we’re their best mate – and not be scared to call us. At the end of the day, we don’t just save lives, we save families.”

Twyford should go Phil Twyford is saying if Aucklanders don’t want state houses in their suburbs, then they should leave.

I beg to differ.

In fact, he is the one that should leave.

It was his party that sat idly by and allowed the National Party to bring in thousands upon thousands of new immigrants knowing that Auckland didn’t have the houses to provide for them that caused the current housing shortage in the first place.

Queenstown Airport puts its expansion plans on hold due to public backlash. It would have made much more sense to have a second airport at Whenuapai - less noise for the long-suffering residents, and less road congestion at the existing airport. Passengers and crews are already missing flights due to traffic congestion. Imagine what it will be like in years to come.

Some campers are responsible Re “Residents urged to speak up on freedom camping”. Having been a freedom camper for many years and spent some great times talking with many local residents including

Eastern Beach, Musick Point, Howick Beach, Mellons Bay most are disgusted with the attitude of a few residents in their selfish attitude towards this issue.

Most vehicles that are certified by Wings Club are in fact taking away more rubbish than they bring. An example last week (week of September 23-30) at Howick Beach, a group of people drinking, enjoying their night, left bottles, McDonalds bags, all kinds of trash.

Bucklands Beach last week (the same period) during the day opposite the motel, a family spent a few hours and left a pile of trash under their car.

It is, I believe, common knowledge that some tourist budget campers perhaps leave rubbish including human waste.

I am sure if you ask some residents from Musick Point, they will tell a few stories about this. I think it is easy for blind residents who take a walk in the mornings and see all the rubbish, including human waste from those that party at these places and of course have long gone, to just blame responsible, certified Wings Club members.

Perhaps if they took a picture, they could be shown that if a freedom camper is going to walk 20 - 30 metres past a bin to drop rubbish, it is most likely the trash and crap is from some other persons.

oodman Property Trust’s energy efficiency initiatives have won plaudits at the prestigious Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority Business Awards 2018.

The trust won the Energy and Emissions Reduction Project Award and was highly commended in the Large Energy User of the Year Award.

John Dakin, chief executive officer of Goodman (NZ), the manager of the trust and owner of Highbrook Business Park, said the most pleasing elements of the project were the impact it had on both the bottom line for our customers as well as reducing our impact on the environment.

“These awards recognise the efforts we have made to be industry leaders in energy efficiency. The winning project has saved our customers more than $1.1 million in operating costs since 2014,” he said.

The project involved Goodman’s VXV Office Portfolio, located in downtown Auckland adjoining the Viaduct and Wynyard Quarters, which was recently sold to funds associated with Blackstone as part of Goodman’s repositioning to focus on industrial property.

(The sale is expected to settle later in the year subject to OIO).

The portfolio of seven buildings has more than 88,000 sqm of rentable space with a daily workforce of around 7000

people. Businesses located there include Air New Zealand, KPMG, Microsoft/HP, Auckland Transport, Fonterra, Datacom and Bayleys.

The energy project aimed to benchmark and improve the buildings’ energy efficiency to lower operating costs. It initially focused on mechanical services but was extended to encompass all aspects of the buildings. ➤➤Key components: • Installing energy monitoring systems • Developing an alert service to detect anomalies in energy consumption • Implementing a service programme to fix faults and continually review the heating,

ventilation, air conditioning and lighting systems • Securing appropriate resourcing and technical capability • Capital upgrades to improve performance even further.

The NABERSNZ rating tool was used to assess the buildings’ performance, with a target rating of 4.5 stars across the portfolio.

The project saved more than 7.5 million kWh of electricity, a reduction of 775 tonnes in carbon emissions and more than $1.1 million in operating costs for customers.

Energy consumption has been reduced from an average cost of $310 per sqm a year to a forecast $180 per sqm by 2019.

Stockade Hill battle continues O

ur committee had a meeting this month (Monday, October 1) and reached a decision re appealing Plan Change 3 regarding Stockade Hill.

The Howick Ratepayers and Residents Assn Inc (HRRA), have made a decision to become involved in the appeal against Plan Change 3 lodged by a member, Janet Dickson (with initial financial backing by five passionate members of the community).

The HRRA considered our position carefully re an appeal but with no obvious benefactor stepping forward, we had no chance of raising sufficient money to fund the appeal ourselves within the time frame available and within our limited finances.

Janet Dickson’s appeal is asking for 360 degree views from the road around Stockade Hill.

Although we all fervently wish for this outcome, we are concerned that we may lose the gains we have won in limiting heights of buildings on the seaward side of Stockade Hill as a result of the appeal so we have decided to join as an “Interested Party”, thus being part but not endangering the Association should sufficient funds not be available.

This is a mature and considered approach while we take further

action to protect views.

HRRA presented a deputation to the Howick Local Board calling for financial support to obtain a Heritage Report as recommended by the PC3 Commissioners to back further actions as we work towards getting the council to establish further protection for the Crawford Reserve views and an acknowledgement of the significance

of the views to the south of Stockade Hill.

Such a report would also become an educational resource for the community. We are awaiting Board backing for this project.

ral health affects our general health and well-being It is important that an older person, just like anyone else, limits the intake of sugary food and drinks, brushes twice daily, and regularly visits the dentist.

Benefits of regular check-ups: • A professional clean at least twice a year is necessary to remove calculus – calcified spots – that are hard to remove from teeth by brushing and flossing alone • Regular check-ups will help detect the early signs of gum disease and any other oral health issues experienced with ageing • Dentists can help prevent problems associated with dry mouth by recommending appropriate methods or treatments to restore moisture in your mouth • Regular visits can also help detect and replace weakening old restorations.

The introduction of fluoride in drinking water, and the use of fluoride toothpastes have played a significant role in the reduction of decay in all age groups.

The belief that fluoride only benefits children is not true. Fluoride helps prevent decay in all age groups.

Gum disease, dry mouth, sensitivity, root caries, weakening old restorations, and missing teeth

are some of the common oral health issues experienced with ageing.

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth or Xerostomia is a condition where the mouth becomes very dry due to reduced saliva flow.

People suffering from dry mouth are more susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath and soft tissue irritation for those who wear dentures.

Warning Signs • Difficulty in swallowing and speaking * Dryness in the mouth * Burning sensation or sore feeling in the mouth

Root Decay

As we age our gums may recede due to the damage caused by hard brushing and gum infections.

Receding gums causes the exposure of the root surfaces of teeth. They absorb stains readily and are not as resistant to decay as the rest of the tooth. When decay occurs, the root becomes softened and darkly stained.

Prevention • Avoid vigorous brushing and use soft-bristled toothbrush •Use fluoride toothpaste.

hen most of us think about retirement, we tend to think about the ‘young-old’ years – from 65 to around 80 or so,” explains Bonnie. “We don’t tend to think about what would happen if we live to 90 or 100 – and what we want to get out of that stage of life.”

These days, the number of people living into their 90s or even into their 100s is growing rapidly.

What’s more, it’s inevitable that the longer you live, the higher your chance of having some sort of health or disability issue. That’s why Bonnie believes it’s crucial to ask yourself ‘what strategies do I need to enjoy life and what’s my attitude going to be?’

It can be a real challenge for people to stay positive if they do have health issues. “It is normal to grieve for the things you have lost,” says Bonnie.

But she believes that this is where attitude comes in to play.

“For example, being told you can’t drive any more is upsetting, but you can either stay at home feeling sad or you can think, “okay, I can’t do that, but what else can I do? Sure, you’ll have to plan a bit more and be more reliant on others, but you can still get out there and enjoy life.”

The other thing that can really help is to learn to accept support.

“Independence can be overrated,” says Bonnie.

“Independence isn’t about having no support, it’s about continuing to have a say in your life. I suggest to many older people that they just get the support they need to lead a good

life. If you need a walker and it means you can be more mobile and get out more, then get one, Bonnie Robinson Photo supplied embrace it.”

Retirement ranks as one of the more stressful events we face in our lives. The American Institute of Stress lists retirement as the 10th most stressful life event, coming in behind events such as death of a spouse and close relative, marriage, divorce and separation, being fired from work, personal injury and being imprisoned.

Research around retirement has identified some of the factors that make retirement a positive experience. Four key elements have emerged from studies where those 80 years and over were asked what they found enjoyable about retirement.

These included: • Social Networking • Activities • Creativity • Learning Maintaining old social networks and building new ones is important for your physical and mental health. Memory and cognitive function are also thought to be protected by social interactions. If you are not currently actively participating in your community – consider setting this as a goal for yourself to substitute for the potential reduction in social contacts associated with retiring from a workplace.

Joining a club, or a class or group in your area. Search online or check with the academic institutions, community centres or local libraries.

Taking up new activities provides the opportunity for both physical and mental exercise. Activities like dancing, bridge, mah-jong, tai chi, golf or volunteering. Volunteering your time to a good cause can extend your contacts, particularly if this is based around your interests.

Activating your creative side by taking up a creative past-time assists brain health. This can involve taking up painting, gardening or hand crafts. Keeping your mind active through life-long learning keeps your mind active and contributes to brain health. Activities like learning a language or taking up playing a musical instrument or exploring new subjects of interest to you.

Ensuring that you get enough sleep and that your sleep pattern is not disturbed by any stress related to retirement. Quality sleep improves our mood, sharpens the mind, gives us energy to approach our busy lives and sleep is essential for memory.

Getting your body into a sleep-wake cycle by getting up at the same time each day. Aim to get over 7 hours sleep per night.

Exposing yourself to sunlight each day or sitting by your window if it is too cold to go outside. Exercising each day – but avoid exercising within 2 hours of bedtime.

Making your evening meal a light meal that is not too spicy. Avoiding stimulants that keep you awake: Caffeine, alcohol and tobacco will keep you awake. Above all - develop a sleep ritual when going to be to sleep and talk to your GP or nurse if you have any health issue related to retirement.

But what about the other stuff?

If today was your last day, what would happen to the things you care about? And do the people closest to you know your wishes for your sendoff?

Fred Baur was a chemist from Ohio who invented the iconic design of the Pringles can and crisps.

Pringles went on to become one of Procter & Gamble’s highest earners and today has annual sales of over $1 billion. In 2008, in accordance with his wishes, Fred’s ashes were buried in a Pringles can.

e’re all embracing spring, and not just because of the warmer – and most welcome – termperatures.

Spring encourages to get outdoors a lot more, to use our garden spaces, our decks and balconies, irrespective of size. Spring gets us to take another look at our gardens, little and large.

It’s a great time to assess what veges you want,, and where. And what about some colour, not just in the shape of the myriad offerings we have access to at our garden centres?

Lowest sales volumes in 8 months a result of extremely low listings T

he low number of new listings in July has meant that the number of houses sold in New Zealand during September decreased by -3 per cent year-on-year.

This was the lowest level number of properties sold since January this year, according to the latest data from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ), source of the most complete and accurate real estate data in New Zealand.

The number of properties sold across the country fell from 5674 in September 2017 to 5506 in September this year – 168 fewer properties. This is the lowest for the month of September since September 2011.

For New Zealand excluding Auckland, the number of properties sold decreased by -3.3 per cent– 133 fewer properties when compared to September 2017 (from 4,023 to 3,890).

In Auckland, the number of properties sold decreased by -2.1 per cent or 35 fewer properties, from 1651 in September 2017 to 1616 in September 2018.

Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “Traditionally there is a lag of about 6 weeks between significant movements in listings and sales results.

“With July’s listings down by 5.4 per cent year-on-year and

an all-time low level of listings in seven regions, it’s little wonder that September’s sales volumes were so low.

“There simply weren’t as many properties for sale resulting in a very quiet start to spring.

“However, with August and September’s listing numbers up 0.1 per cent and 11.7 per cent respectively, it is expected that October and November’s sales volumes will be much stronger – particularly as people want to sell ahead of Christmas,” continues Norwell.

Across the country 12 out of 16 regions saw a fall in volumes with 6 of those regions experiencing double-digit decreases.

Regions with the largest annual decrease in sales volumes were: ➤➤Northland: -21.9 per cent (from 215 to 168 – 47 fewer houses) – the lowest since January 2018 ➤➤Gisborne: -21.7 per cent (from 60 to 47 – 13 fewer houses) – the lowest since January 2018 ➤➤West Coast: -18.9 per cent (from 37 to 30 – 7 fewer houses) – the lowest since December 2017.

There were also some regions with strong annual increase in sales volumes including: ➤➤Marlborough: +31.5 per cent (from 54 to 71 – an additional 17

houses) ➤➤Southland: +22.3 per cent (from 139 to 170 – an additional 31 houses) ➤➤Waikato: +9.1 per cent (from 582 to 635 – an additional 53 houses).

Prices continue to grow in the regions with 4 regions achieving record prices While volumes were down around many parts of the country, the reverse was true from a price perspective, with 14 out of 16 regions experiencing an increase in median prices when compared to September last year.

Of those 14 regions, 4 achieved record median prices and 1 region equalled a previous record median: ➤➤Gisborne: +26.9 per cent to $342,500 (up $72,500 from the same time last year) ➤➤Nelson: +23.1 per cent to $592,000 (up $111,000 from the same time last year) ➤➤Manawatu/Wanganui: +18.9 per centto $321,000 (up $51,000 from the same time last year) ➤➤Northland: +12.2 per cent to $505,000 (up $55,000 from the same time last year) ➤➤Hawke’s Bay: +13.5 per cent to $445,000 an equal record with August 2018 (up $53,000 from the same time last year).

Looking at the national picture, median house prices across New Zealand increased 5.9 per cent year-on-year from $525,000 in September 2017 to $556,000 in September 2018.

Auckland’s housing market has continued its now predictably stable pattern, with a median price of $850,000 the exact same price as September last year.

“There are now seven regions across New Zealand that have median prices in excess of the half a million-dollar mark with Northland the newest region to go over this level. Additionally, there are already three regions that have exceeded the $600,000 median mark and with Nelson’s median sitting at $592,000 it may not be too far away until we have a fourth region edging over the $600,000 mark,” points out Norwell.

“With our population growth and demand for properties continuing to exceed the supply of housing stock, prices are likely to continue increasing in the short to medium term. In fact, new research issued by AUT earlier this week suggested that at our current rate of supply we won’t reach demand until the mid-to-late 2020s.

“This means that price pressure could well be an issue for some time – particularly in our more densely populated cities,” says Norwell.

“Looking at the Auckland picture, we’ve seen Auckland’s median house price hover around the $850,000 mark for 18 months now – this incredibly stable market is positive for first time buyers who are desperately saving to get a foot on the property ladder.

“However, it’s also good for investors, buyers and sellers too, as it means that everyone knows what the market is doing – there don’t tend to be too many happy people when the market is particularly volatile,” concludes Norwell.

Days to Sell

The median number of days to sell a property nationally increased by 2 days from 34 to 36 when compared to September last year.

For New Zealand excluding Auckland, the median days to sell increased on an annual basis by 3 days from 32 to 35.

Auckland saw the median number of days to sell a property increase by 2 days to 39 days (up from 37 in September 2017).

This is the lowest median days to sell since April this year.

Auctions

Auctions were used in 14.5 per cent of all sales across the country in September, with 798 properties selling under the hammer – this is down slightly from September 2017, when 14.8 per cent of properties (798) were sold via auction.

Testing a Tesla just the business ■■By Reay Neben

M

y sales manager made an announcement to me that Tesla had offered Brian and me a test drive for the weekend.

How ridiculous, I thought.

I am a petrolhead and although I did know of Elon Musk, I had no idea or any interest in a vehicle that operated by battery.

I love my battery-operated chainsaw and blower but a car was a totally different concept.

Okay, I said, I will give it a go. I was asked if I wanted a saloon or an SUV so I decided, in for a penny, in for a pound – I would have the big SUV. The Tesla representative sent through the pick-up details and off we toddled to Karangahape Road in the city on a busy Friday afternoon to pick up said vehicle.

The showroom is magnificent and, to my surprise, there were lots of people in there looking at the vehicles on display.

Apprehension was setting in now and then I was told that the SUV I was to drive was the top-of-therange Model XP100D with a price tag of $206,000.

We were taken down to this basement area – where vehicles can come for a rapid recharge – and there was this black, beautiful vehicle that was to be ours for the weekend.

The representative went through all the details and also set the computer or the touch screen to my requirements.

was thought the best option for me was chill. Thank goodness for that.

After about half an hour of enlightenment about this space-age machine, it was time for a test drive.

Great... 2.30pm, Friday, K’ Road and now a thunderstorm loomed too in which to test drive a battery-driven vehicle.

I was a little apprehensive as I seated myself behind the wheel, Brian in the back and Kelly (the Tesla representative) seemingly quite calm in the front passenger seat.

The first thing I noticed was the huge touch screen with every detail needed to run the car, connect to

the internet; actually, everything you could imagine.

Sitting in the driver’s seat, the windscreen (if that’s what you would call it) was one piece of glass from the bonnet to the middle of the roof.

Just fabulous.

Off I set; car in drive (chill mode) and, with no noise or effort.

It took me a few minutes to adjust to the driving and then it was so easy... a vehicle with every luxury and just so simple to drive.

The drive home (in the thunderstorm, Friday afternoon) on the southern motorway was a breeze and I did have a chance to test the

speed and the quiet pick-up to 100km/h.

I cannot imagine what the 0 to 100 would be like in ludicrous mode because in chill mode it was like a jet plane taking off.

So fast and so smooth with no noise! I stopped at the lights at Karaka and looked to my left and stopped next to me was the same vehicle as I was driving and the man waving, thinking that I was a proud owner, like him, enjoying my love of this vehicle.

The weekend went so fast and the drive into the city on Monday was with my mind completely changed

about electric vehicles.

I now understand the Mercury Energy TV advert where the two old guys leave the rest home in the huge 1957 Ford Fairlane sports car and show the power of the take-off at the lights, beating a (petrol) muscle car. I did that and it was such fun.

This vehicle is not only for the young and trendy but also can be well-enjoyed by the older group who love luxury cars and not paying the current ridiculous petrol charges.

MW can build a decent motor car, but its accountants should go back to math

class.

Case in point: BMW New Zealand is offering a Shadow Edition of its hot M140i hatch that’s got a bunch of extra kit.

This is special edition model that was developed by BMW internationally, not a local initiative where the M140i has optional extras bolted on it at the dealership.

It has more safety and comfort features, along with cosmetic enhancements that include black kidney grilles, black headlight

trims, and a new alloy wheel design.

The $8000 worth of goodies are Adaptive LED headlights; Driving Assistant; a Harman Kardon sound system; Professional spec navigation system with iD6; front and rear Park Distance Control (PDC); and Speed Limit Information.

That’s pretty straightforward. It’s not until you check BMW’s price list that things get weird.

The standard M140i hatch is still available for $82,000, whereas the Shadow Edition has a recommended retail price of $69,900.

So, $82,000 plus $8000 of extra stuff equals $69,990.

We checked that with BMW’s PR bloke who confirmed that the Shadow Edition price does indeed start with a ‘6’, not an ‘8’.

Normally, such a deal would suggest that the base car isn’t much chop and the company wants it gone, but that’s far from the case.

M140i’s fun factor comes in the shape of a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six that develops 250kW, but more importantly, a hefty

500Nm of torque.

Rear-wheel drive M140i will blast from rest to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds, and have the driver grinning in a lot less time than that.

The engine howls, and there’s cool bark from the exhaust when you upshift at the redline. You can go deep into a corner, brake hard, and then launch out thanks to the huge amount of grip.

This is where BMW’s math makes sense: big engine plus small car equals rapid acceleration. You could even say that it’s priceless.

With its M Sport suspension, M140i sits around 10mm lower than a mainstream 1 Series.

New direction for Howick Golf Club

N

ew direction for the Howick Golf Club in 2018 has seen the employment of Rory Moor as the general manager.

A previous Head Professional, elite golf coach, mentor, ex PGA Tour player and board member of the NZPGA, Moor brings a wealth of golfing knowledge management to the position.

The illustrious Wentworth Golf Club, the site of the World Matchplay and European Masters is where he started the game in the UK moving onto the emerging European Tour with the likes of Nicklaus, Trevino, Palmer and also competed alongside so many of the greatest players of the 80s and 90s that included New Zealanders Sir Bob Charles, John Lister, Frank Nobilo and Greg Turner.

Working at Wentworth was a great experience alongside ex Ryder Cup player and Captain Bernard Gallacher, playing with the elite of the game and the likes of TV personality Bruce Forsythe and International soccer guru Danny Blanchflower before spending years perusing a professional playing career in Europe and Down Under.

Some small event victories came through a 10 year playing career during which time he emigrated to New Zealand and found his home in Howick where he has remained, time during the

“We have a great team here at Howick and our new developments include our East Auckland Golf Academy which will be lead by Dan Rutlley our professional,” he said.

“Both Macleans College and Saint Kentigern College are taking advantage of the services, as are many of the local community who are looking to get into the sport.”

Improved practice areas and supporting services are planned and are seen as a key to the growth of the game promoting members of the future.

“The overall ethos is to develop the facility with more native flora and fauna along with creating a course that can be played all year round.

He also paid tribute to the previous manager Annette Smart and wished to build on the “great structure” that she had created.

“We have an amazing situation here on the peninsula with some of the best views in the world with a course that is so accessible. From the beginner to the elite player Howick Golf Club just a great place to be,” said Moor.

Zheng makes Youth Olympics team Howick Golf Club’s Jimmy Zheng and Canterbury’s Juliana Hung have been selected to represent New Zealand at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.

The pair have been selected for their great form and are the highest ranked juniors in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

They will be 16-years-old at the time of the games and now get the opportunity to compete against some of the world’s best young golfers where the small bracket of young athletes aged from 15 to 18 years old will strive for gold.

There are two divisions at the event with the Men/ Women Individual championships being held from October 9 – 11 and the Mixed Gender Team championship from October 13 – 15.

Zheng’s star is on the rise with a focus which won him the South Island Under 19 Championship earlier this year. The 16-year-old started the final round two shots behind, to then shoot seven-

under 66 and win by an impressive two strokes.

ride in the jersey was restored at Mount Smart on Saturday when the Kiwis won their rugby league clash against Australia in a 26-24 heartwarming thriller.

It was a far cry from their dismal 2017 World Cup performance when they fell to Tonga and Fiji and failed to make the playoffs.

Meanwhile full marks to the Silver Fern netballers who upset Constellation Cup hot favourites Australia 55-44 in Hamilton on Sunday with the amazing Maria Folau slotting 40 goals from 41 attempts.

With dynamic centre Laura Langman back to captain the side after she was made unavailable last year for playing in the Australian league, the team is gelling nicely under new coach Noeline Taurua who has injected the competitive drive it had lacked.
