he aroma of cuisines from all over the world wafted through Baverstock Oaks School as the annual International Food Festival came alive on Saturday.

The popular event was organised by the Friends at Baverstock (FAB) group run by Kylie Lipscombe and a team of dedicated parents.

Ten different cuisines on offer gave everyone a chance to take off on a culinary adventure.

There were plenty of performances including kapa haka, students playing the ukulele, junior and senior dance, and choir groups. The winners of the 2018 Talent Quest also kept everyone entertained by their performance.

First house demolished for Eastern Busway ■■By Therese Henkin

T

he first of 61 houses along Pakuranga Road came crashing down this morning to make way for the AMETI Eastern Busway. It’s been a quarter century in the making.

Mayor Phil Goff was joined by Auckland Transport (AT) representatives and local board members, councillors and a local MP donning hi-vis and hardhats to watch the demolition kick off.

“You feel an element of sadness when you see a house come down but you know that what’s going to replace it is the best public transport system Pakuranga and east Auckland has ever seen,” says Goff.

The removal of these Auckland Council-owned properties will allow for parts of Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road to be widened to create a dedicated, congestionfree busway.

This is the first stage of the fourstage project which will also see Panmure Roundabout turned into a safer signalised intersection, new cycle and walking paths, improved public spaces and reserves, a second bridge across Tamaki River and several intersection upgrades.

Goff says east Auckland has been the most poorly-served area in Auckland for public transport and the dedicated busway, walkways and cycleways will give commuters options for getting into the city centre.

“Everybody that drives down [Pakuranga Road] knows that we’ve got to improve the transport arrangements for the east, as it has grown. This sort of infrastructure really should have been done 10 years ago. But the next best time

to do it is now,” he says.

“While we are losing these houses, it does mean that we are able to provide the transport system for all of the new houses that are being built in this area so that we don’t have mass congested roads.”

He says people will also have a safe, realistic option of riding bikes and scooters to work.

The removal of properties on the northern side of Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road will finish early next year to enable the main construction phase to start in March/

Goff says the introduction of the regional fuel tax has allowed for the remaining three stages of the busway – Pakuranga Town Centre and Reeves Road Flyover, Pakuranga to Botany Busway and a new interchange at Botany Town Centre – to be fast tracked.

“When you fill your petrol up, you at least know where that money is going.

“This has been talked about for a quarter of a century, 25 years,” Goff says. “We’ve waited a long time for this.”

Project director, Duncan Humphrey says he was in University when he first heard about AMETI and now, years later, is in charge of overseeing the whole project.

“This work will significantly increase the visibility of the project for those who live, work and travel through this area,” says AT project director, Duncan Humphrey.

“While this progress is exciting and will result in vastly-improved travel choices, journey times and reliability for east Aucklanders, we appreciate that there will be inconveniences and disruption caused by the removal of properties and imminent construction.

We do have plans to minimise these impacts.”

Police hunt man after attack and attempted rape ■■By Nick Krause

P

olice are hunting for a man who attacked a young woman and allegedly attempted to rape her in the early hours of Friday in Highland Park.

A very angry father of a girl who was out with the victim told the Times that the pair were heading home after a night out.

His daughter had ordered an Uber but her friend insisted on walking the five minutes home. “(My daughter) grabbed her Uber and her friend, while walking home, got attacked by two people (who) beat her up and attempted to rape her,” he said.

“Fortunately she managed to escape.”

“The police said they got DNA and more than likely he will show up in their files.”

An anonymous post on social media said the attacker was a man of small-to-average build, Maori/Pacific Islander, 30-40ish “shouted out from behind”.

“She ran and he chased her.

She threw her phone at him once he was close. He tackled her and pinned her to the ground and kneeled over her, wrestling, hitting her head, nose and lip and contacting her private parts. He held her throat,” the post said.

“He gave up when she started screaming and she got away and ran home.

“Not long before that a white hatchback/sedan with spoiler

(similar to Celica) had passed her twice, cat-calling the first time.”

A police spokesperson confirmed to the Times that police are making enquiries following the incident in Highland Park at about 3.15am on Friday November 16.

“A young woman was assaulted by a man on Aberfeldy Street before she managed to break free and run away,” said police.

“Anyone who saw a suspicious person or vehicle in the area, or who has information about this incident is urged to contact Counties Manukau Squad on 09 261 1321.

“Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

ith only 15 sleeps to the Howick Santa Parade on Sunday December 9, the excitement is mounting.

As Bo Burns – who has taken over the organising of the iconic parade this year – deals with volunteers, activities, entertainment, participants, sponsors and after-event parties, somewhere in Howick College a team of students is working hard to design and prepare Santa’s sleigh.

Howick College teacher Nadiene Kyle is busy helping the students put the sleigh together in a big workshop.

Together, Santa’s helpers are working hard to put the sleigh together.

It is the highlight of the parade as Santa will travel on it and make his way from Fencible Drive to Wellington Street and onto Picton Street and finish at Cook Street.

Point View wins pilot trial Point View School has won a nationwide trial involving more than 20 schools.

In terms 1 and 2, Engineering New Zealand (ENZ) trialled the Wonder Project Rocket Challenge in seven schools, and in term 2, this was extended to 22.

Schools were located from Auckland to Marlborough and more than 1000 children took part. To celebrate the conclusion of pilot 2, students were tasked with creating a short video to showcase their STEM learnings from the six-week challenge.

ENZ’s new in-school programme – The Wonder Project – is set to blast off to New Zealand schools next year.

The Wonder Project is all about getting young Kiwis excited about a career in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). It’s designed to spark wonder in these subjects among students from all backgrounds, build confidence, and have them believe they achieve amazing things.

With the announcement comes the call-out for schools and professionals to be involved in 2019. Chief

executive of Engineering New Zealand Susan Freeman-Greene says now is a better time than ever to sign up.

“In New Zealand, there is a massive skills shortfall in STEM – we simply don’t have enough young people pursuing careers in these fields. The Wonder Project aims to change that – taking our Kiwi kids on a creative, dynamic and, most importantly, fun STEM journey.”

The Wonder Project includes three successive programmes that knit seamlessly into the school curriculum. Each school is supported by a team of industry professionals, from

the likes of Rocket Lab, Air New Zealand and various engineering organisations around New Zealand.

A

fter a few days observing, Times photographer Wayne Martin was lucky enough to witness a nest of pied oyster catcher chicks hatch at Barry Curtis Park.

The pied oystercatcher breeds in spring and summer. Nests are unlined scrapes on a mound or raised area of sand, gravel or soil with good visibility all around. Both members of the pair incubate one to three eggs and care for the young.

Incubation takes 24-28 days, and the young fledge 28-42 days after hatching.

Most birds begin breeding when three-years-old.

Charity begins with Christmas Op shop ■■By Farida Master

T

he ramshackle shed wears a cheerful look as Crystal Steel has transformed it into a cheerful and vibrant Christmas speciality shop that sits next to St Andrew’s Opportunity Shop on Vincent Street, Howick.

Three years ago Crystal realised that there were a lot of Christmas gifts and decor that people donated throughout the year which was taking up a lot of shelf space at the Op shop.

“We were running out of space and decided to have a separate Christmas shop in the shed nextdoor where people can buy a wide variety of Christmas stuff at a very cheap price.

“We’ve been running it for the last two years; this will be the third year,” says the energetic 80-year–old Howick resident.

“We collected around $1000 last year, which all goes to charity.”

Having volunteered for St Andrew’s Op Shop for 50 years, ever since it started in Otara before moving to Howick, Crystal has seen a huge change as far as charity shops go.

“There were times when people would eagerly wait right outside the shop on a Tuesday or a Thursday as we brought in new stock and they would swoop on it like birds, want-

Lucky kids win ride to school in police car ■■By Therese Henkin On Tuesday morning one lucky Riverina School student got the school carpool of a lifetime.

Tristan MacCauley, 6, was the winner of this year’s Every Day Heroes ‘Win a Ride to School’ competition and was chosen out of more than 300 entries for a ride to school in a police car.

The object of the competition was to teach kids and their parents to remove all items that could be stolen from the inside of a vehicle.

In order to win, Tristan had to identify items left visible in a car that made it a target for theft and identify ways to minimise the risk of theft.

Tristan chose his brother Jayden, 10, and best friend Braxtyn, 6, to accompany him on his ride in a police car.

Bright and early in the morning the three boys loaded their school bags into the police vehicle and were driven to school by Constable Nick Cockerell.

He also showed them everything they needed to know about police cars.

Waiting for them when they arrived at Riverina School was their principal Carol Dickinson and their classmates.

The boys loved the trip and were calling out to their friends as they drove in the school gates.

Beverley Riley, who has also been a long time volunteer, says that more often than not people would buy stuff on lay-by and, on benefit day, they’d drop in to collect bags full of goodies.

unteers at the shop then, now the average age of volunteers is 70 to 80 years.

The ladies fondly mention 96-year-old Lorraine Stewart who sometimes takes washing baskets home to give the old clothes a wash.

She even irons them and gets them on a hanger, ready for sale.

The Pakuranga College School bell that dates back to 1881 was recently found covered in dirt, lying in a school shed.

The Head of Technology Faculty Gary Brinsden was intrigued and excited when he accidently discovered a piece of precious history that had once commanded a lot of attention.

He immediately got in touch with local historian Alan La Roche before he restored the copper bell to its former glory.

It now has a place of pride in the College staffroom.

“I have included on the plaque (placed below the bell) a very condensed version of the bell’s origin but I thought we should perhaps expand on this using the QR code. Being a technology teacher I couldn’t resist using a QR code, which is placed on the plaque,” he laughs.

“The school was built at the cost of $420. The bell was ordered previous to that and hung around September 1881,” he says. When contacted by Brinsden, La Roche had an interesting story to tell about the bell which is more than 100 years old.

According to the historian, the bell started life at the original Pakuranga School site, which was originally standing at the current St John Ambulance Station.

A 137-year-old Pakuranga College bell was recently discovered by head of technology faculty Gary Brinsden.

The original building is now stationed at the Howick Historical Village, although Pakuranga College still has the headmaster’s house at its present location – now Wairoa House.

“The bell then travelled to the school’s temporary location in the Howick District High School buildings, where Howick Intermediate School is today,” says Brinsden. “When the students moved to the new Pakuranga College campus at the end of Term 1 in 1960, they carried the bell with them.

An email from La Roche says the Pakuranga School’s headmaster’s house was built in about 1879 for William Woodward, the first headmaster in Pakuranga School.

“He and his wife Laura were teachers at the school. Their children are well known. Alice was the first woman doctor in Auckland. William became Chief Justice in Samoa, and Constance married Lloyd Mandeno who invented the modern hot water cylinder. A hydro dam on the Waikato is named after him,” says La Roche.

“William Green lived in the headmasters house from 1893 to 1914. The house was donated to the Howick Historical Society and when our secretary, Mrs. Karen Mirams, also on Pakuranga College Board managed to get the college to take it, we were relieved as we did not want it for our Howick Historical Village.”

he Howick Village Business Association (HVBA) has run a Christmas Tree Competition, the results of which will bring colour and festive cheer to the village.

“We have 14 entries that will start arriving shortly, to be judged. These will be displayed around the Christmas lights tent/rotunda and other locations along Picton Street – from Midnight Madness –November 23 until Christmas Eve,” the HVBA said.

In addition, the following schools, kindergartens and local children’s groups have been given a 1.2m mdf Christmas Tree to decorate which will be placed next to street poles, the length of Picton Street from Midnight Madness “HVBA purchased 20 of these trees as an incentive to get our younger community involved and interested in the Village, and the response was overwhelming.

We had to turn several groups away as we did not have enough trees.”

Timeless story of loyalty and adventure M

acleans College’s recent junior production Wind in the Willows directed by Carleena Walsh, is a much-loved story of good friends, Mole, Ratty and Badger and their adventures exploring the Wide World and the Wild Wood - all the while trying to keep their good friend, Mr Toad, out of trouble.

The energetic and rather pompous Toad, is played by Nancy Qiang, a warm and confident Ratty, played

by Marianne Reynecke, and the timid yet inquisitive Mole, played by Katya Davidson.

Ethan Lotter, who played a very wise Badger, delivered some absolute gems about living one’s best life.

Written by Kenneth Grahame and adapted for the stage by Mike Kenny Wind in the Willows had a cast of 34 students on stage, and another 35 students had backstage roles – costume, hair and make-up, and front-

of-house crews. The cast, all Year 9 and 10 students, enjoyed exploring their characters, humans with animal characteristics in the timeless story of friendship, loyalty and adventure.

Young actors were committed to bringing the story alive on the stage.

Year 10 student, Jaden Cheng, created all the sound effects ranging from keys locking the jail house door to car crashes and aeroplanes flying overhead.

“You’re covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act and the Fair Trading Act for goods or services sold by a business that is based in New Zealand - even if you bid for it in an auction. But if the seller is not a business or if they are based overseas you don’t have much protection.”

Louise says that if you do want to buy from a private seller, you can minimise your risk by getting their full name and address (in case you need to track them down later), checking the feedback from past customers, and - if at all possible - inspecting the item before you hand over your money.

“If you bought your Christmas presents from a New

Zealand trader then those presents are covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act, even after you’ve gifted them and this also applies if you bought them on sale. That means they have to be fit for purpose, acceptable quality and fit their description,” she says.

Calls for harsher dumping penalties M

ayor Phil Goff has welcomed Auckland Council’s second successful prosecution of an illegal dumper in two weeks but says the penalties should be much higher.

It is a move many in east Auckland will agree with having witnessed many such illegal dumpings in public areas in recent months and year.

In July a commercial truck was caught on council surveillance dumping a large amount of inorganic material in Wiri, south Auckland. A second dumping was recorded at the same location the following week. The offender was prosecuted, pleaded guilty to both charges and was fined $1000 plus costs. The offender had previously been fined for dumping green waste in Franklin.

Goff said, “I’m pleased this cowboy commercial outfit has been fined, but given their blatant disregard for our environment, the penalty needs to be tougher. Having offenders spend their weekends cleaning up rubbish around the city, for example, would be a good case of a penalty that fits the crime.

“This is brazen recidivism from a commercial operator with no regard for the ratepayer. Frankly, acting in this way should attract harsher consequences.

“We have made an approach to the government to amend the relevant legislation because the penalties under the Litter Act 1979 are clearly not an effective deterrent in 2018.”

Earlier this month another recidivist commercial dumper was identified in south Auckland. The offender in that instance was fined $3500 plus costs for dumping concrete and soil on three separate occasions in Mangere.

The prosecutions follow the Mayor’s announcement in February of $200,000 in additional funding to hire extra enforcement staff and double the number of CCTV cameras in hotspot areas.

“We as council are cracking down because like most Auck-

landers we are tired of a few irresponsible individuals blighting our landscape because they’re too lazy or irresponsible to dispose of their rubbish appropriately,” said Goff.

“Not only does it damage the environment, it burdens ratepayers with the costs of cleanup. Litter and illegal dumping cost ratepayers more than $1 million in removal costs alone last year.

Electric bikes’ star on the rise

E-bikes are making huge inroads in the recreational and adventure markets in NZ with growth rising from 1800 coming in for the whole of 2015 to some 2000 per month. Times editor Nick Krause takes a test ride to see what the fuss is about

But is this a passing phase? I don’t think so. The growth of e-bikes (according to transport consulting firm Via Strada estimates for NZ) show in 2015, an estimated 1833 e-bikes were brought into the country. In the year to May 2017, that number jumped to nearly 17,000.

This year, that number has increased to almost 2000 electric

bikes per month.

“Another interesting statistic from overseas, one in three bikes sold in The Netherlands each year now is an e-bike,” says Cooke, whose Botany store has a range to suit everyone.

I balked at the prices I’d seen last year on some e-bikes. This seems to be settling down.

Naturally cost is higher (electric motor, battery and manufacturers need a better base bike to start with) but I could live with this range – perhaps not top-end (although I really would to try one out).

Electrify NZ stocks mid and highend bikes, retailing from $2.5k to $8.5k.

“The benefits compared to a regular bike are you can ride without getting all hot and sweaty but you do still get some exercise,” says Cooke.

“It makes headwinds and hills irrelevant and, because it’s easier, you’ll tend to ride further and more frequently.”

But also, they’re fun, just exhilarating. They democratise bike riding, says Cooke.

“You don’t have to be a lycrawearing, life-long cyclist to enjoy an e-bike. You can e-bike to work in your suit or your dress, and you won’t need a shower or a change of clothes when you get there.”

E-bikes can be as fast – or faster for some commuters, compared to a car sitting in traffic going nowhere.

Think Pakuranga Highway, Te Irirangi Drive, Mt Eden, the City, the North Western Motorway path.

reland have done the All Blacks a favour in inflicting upon them their second defeat in their last three clashes under the expert guidance of coaches Joe Schmidt and Andy Farrell.

Last Sunday’s 16-9 loss to Ireland in Dublin after the narrow 16-15 win against England at Twickenham showed the All Blacks are not next year’s Rugby World Cup hot favourites so many had supposed.

Ireland fullY tested and sometimes bettered their scrum and their outstanding loose forward trio of C J Stander, Josh van der Flier and man of the match Peter O’Mahony collectively outplayed Kieran Read, Liam Squire and Ardie Savea although Savea shone individually.

Some believe Ma’a Nonu, who is to team with SBW for the Blues, will help solve the selector’s problem. But, at 36, that is a forlorn hope although he claims to be as fit as he’s ever been. The problems are not confined to the forwards.

Sam Whitelock deserves a long rest, as does Brodie Retallick who looked injured and made uncharacteristic mistakes against Ireland after his heroics against England.

Rising star a hot ticket in new draft

oung Howick Hornets and NZ age-group rising star Luke Williams will be entered into this year’s AFL New Zealand National Draft and will join a raft of young talent who will be looking to book a spot in one of the four AFL New Zealand Premiership sides in 2019.

Williams, 17, from Pakuranga, was involved in a number of rounds in the 2018 AFL New Zealand Premiership playing as a development player which culminated in a dominant performance during the final round to earn himself the rising star award.

The former hooker started out playing AFL in the Secondary School Cup for Pakuranga College before joining the Howick Hornets in the Auckland AFL. Williams doesn’t shy away from a contest and is hard at the football, according to blog aflnz.co.nz. “With plenty of talent, he will continue to develop into a handy midfielder in years to come.”
