he didn’t want any fuss to be made over her turning 100.

Joyce Heighway had warned her family and staff at the Somerset by the Park Retirement Village that she didn’t want any big celebration for her milestone birthday on November 21.

Yet on Wednesday morning, activities assistant Joanne Clark from Somerset By the Park Retirement Village held a surprise morning tea for Joyce and invited family and friends to mark the special day.

You don’t turn 100 every day, she said.

On the pretext of taking Joyce for a stroll after a visit to the hairdressers, the 100-year-old birthday girl was surreptitiously led down the corridor to a place where Joyce’s family was quietly waiting for her on level one.

Her daughters Margaret Peters and Helen Preston looked visibly worried about their mother’s reaction to the surprise morning tea.

They weren’t sure how she’d take it.

The centenarian is clearly the matriarch of the family and rules the roost. As one of her family members put it, “She is as sharp as a dart.”

However Joyce’s daughters needn’t have panicked. After the initial surprise, the feisty greatgrandmother was delighted on seeing her close family and friends on the grand occasion.

There was also a special bouquet of flowers from Rotarian George Wilson who had made it a point to be there. “Joyce is a very special person. Both her husband and she were Rotarians and were always there to help the Rotary Club of Papakura,” he said. “Joyce used to do the amazing bake sales and help us with the fundraising. I couldn’t have

missed her 100th birthday.”

Once she cut her birthday cake, Joyce proudly declared to the Times, “Luckily I have all my faculties intact.

“My dad use to be a milkman and he died in his sixties because he used to get wet in the rain delivering milk. But my mum and my sisters all lived well over 85.

“My husband and I used to run a dairy and everyone said that I worked very hard. But I don’t think so. I just kept long hours and was on my feet. And that is what kept me fit,” she said revealing the secret behind her longevity.

Ross at opening of mental health facility at Middlemore ■■By Farida Master

ourageous and symbolic’ is how Minister of Health Dr David Clark acknowledged MP Jami-Lee Ross’ presence at new mental health unit.

They were at the stage one, ceremonial opening of Counties Manukau Health’s new $57 million Tiaho Mai Mental Health Unit at the grounds of Middlemore Hospital on Thursday.

It was Ross’ first public appearance since the enormous political upheaval which sent tremors right through the National Party. He was also admitted to the unit at the height of a national scandal which saw him expelled from the National Party after a report deemed it likely he was responsible for a media leak.

He denies it.

Ross also accused National leader Simon Bridges of electoral law impropriety, released bugged conversations to media and admitted infidelity before being admitted to Tiaho Mai. The Botany MP said he was at the facility opening simply to acknowledge “all the care and support he received from the staff at the mental health care unit” when he was going through the roughest phase of his life.

“I’m not here to talk politics,” a rather subdued Ross told the Times, even as he evoked a lot of media interest with television cameras being focussed on him.

While Ross was apprehensive how his presence at a public event would be perceived, it seemed like he was in safe territory as the Labour Party Minister made it a point to personally greet Ross “and respectfully welcome” him.

“I am delighted that Jami-Lee on his part thought it is appropriate to be here,” he said later, as television crews questioned the minister about Ross’s attendance at the opening of Tiaho Mai (which in Te Reo Maori

While Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown and National Party List member, Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi kept a safe distance from Ross that afternoon, they did eventually say hello to their former colleague and asked how he was doing.

Clark said that the bright, stateof-the-art, patient-centred 38-bed adult mental health inpatient facil-

ity, which is unlike a prison with barred windows and a high fence, has an open courtyard that helps improve safety and visibility within the unit.

“The government has prioritised mental health, with the number of people assessing mental health having gone up to 70 per cent in New Zealand,” he said.

Large rooms and corridors with a specially-designed shower facility as

well as the light and open spaces in the high dependency unit ensures everyone can access outdoor spaces and fresh air without needing fenced external areas.

The long awaited unit was developed using a co-design approach.

“Key to the unique new building were the many families, staff and cultural groups consulted throughout the design and build,” said general manager Mental Health at Counties

Manukau Health, Tess Ahern.

“Safety for both service users and staff is a big focus. Several visits to other inpatient units both in New Zealand and Australia were also organised,” she said.

With 55 per cent of Tiaho Mai service users being identified as Maori, the facility contains a modern whare (carved meeting house) and wharekai (dining room) to promote Maori mental health.

Buzzing with excitement ■■By Farida Master

T

o bee or not to bee?

It took a lot of convincing and almost four years to happen and now Botany Downs Primary School is a buzzing hive of activity. Literally! The school has just got two new beehives!

Teacher Tom Huskinson was keen that children make a connection with nature and learn how integrated the ecosystem is.

“I wanted to motivate the children to have real world experiences with garden bees and how we get honey.

“Unfortunately a lot of parents from overseas were worried that their children may get stung by the bees and so there was some opposition, but now it’s all come to be,” he says.

“I wanted the kids to get rid of their fear of bees and learn how they are critical pollinators.

“The idea behind it is also to collect honey for fundraising and for them to be able to spot the queen bee, to know about drones-the male bees that have a big stomach and don’t do much,” he laughs.

The school contacted social entrepreneur and activist Matthew Brajkovich from Mr B’s Bees whose family has been beekeeping for 200 years.

Along with Ceracell, suppliers of bee-ware, he set up two wooden boxes that house bee frames, an essential part of a modern day movable hives in

Breaking away from the traditional beehive, the idea of hosting a hive is catching on fast - anyone can host a hive on their property and have it managed by experienced and professional beekeepers.

The bonus is having the sweetest and pure honey straight off the honeycomb.

“If bees die, we die,” says Mat-

thew.

“There will be no backyard tomatoes, lemon trees or any vegetable gardens if you don’t have bees to pollinate,” he tells a group of youngsters.

“I had inspected the new frames a week ago and am now rearranging them so that they have a better order to pollinate.

They want to swarm if they don’t have enough space. It’s like inviting people for dinner and not having enough to eat,” he says.

“These are small Italian bees that are not as big or aggressive as the African ones.”

While Matthew doesn’t charge the schools for his services, part of the proceeds from the sale of honey goes to him to help with the maintenance costs and licence fee.

The hobbyist has been visiting schools like Riverina, Howick Intermediate, Baverstock Oaks and Sancta Maria College to educate students on `beeing right’.

In its first report since 2014, the Macleans College Education Review Office (ERO) report highlights the many opportunities the school provides students to achieve success and pointed to the fact that over 90 per cent of students achieve University Entrance. “I love that you can learn a lot from the residents, hearing about their interesting lives and their different upbringings.

“This is a really special part of their lives and meeting their families and witnessing their close relationships is a wonderful part of this role.”

Michelle Working towards a Masters degree in Health Management following 20 years at Middlemore Hospital as an acute care nurse, Hospital Coordinator Michelle Lowe came to Ryman in July hoping to ‘give something back’.

“I wanted to give myself a new direction in nursing – I could employ some of my management skills whilst still working on the coal face and education is something I feel strongly about so it’s ticking all those boxes.”

She loves the way Ryman takes a holistic approach to care.

“All the activities and the Triple A exercises Ryman organises, it’s not just about day to day caring but keeping people engaged and vibrant and having meaningful relationships still within the community.

“I have been really impressed with that.”

Kathlen As the newest member of the team, Kathlen Gingoyon joined this month as Special Care Unit Coordinator.

She has a range of nursing experience in the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand, but has found her calling in aged care, which she describes as a ‘breath of fresh air’.

“In the Philippines we don’t have resthome or retirement care like there is here, we look after our older people at home.

“So for me, aged care is like a breath of fresh air. It’s like looking after our grandmothers or grandads and it feels like being at home.”

Artika Enrolled nurse Artika Naidu joined Bruce McLaren last month as Serviced Apartment Coordinator and so far has been blown away by the supportive team and what she describes an ‘amazing’ facility.

Having been raised from the age of ve by her grandmother, it feels completely natural for Artika Naidu to use her nursing experience to help older people.

“It’s very good here, very professional and the village looks beautiful and all the residents receive the best care which is what they deserve. I absolutely enjoy it.”

Riana Recently moving from a receptionist role to Assistant to the Manager, Riana van Niekerk is really the glue that keeps the whole team together and says she couldn’t imagine working anywhere else.

“I love working here, they will have to drag me away,” laughs Riana, who moved from South Africa to New Zealand in 2014.

“I love the friendliness of the residents and I enjoy helping to care for them.

“It takes away a little bit of the sadness of leaving my parents by giving something back to these people and my goal every day is to get to know each of them a little better.”

Victory for 34 Moore Street ■■By Therese Henkin

T

he Howick Local Board is celebrating a victory in its long-time fight against the sale of 34 Moore Street.

The decision has been made by the Finance and Performance Committee of Auckland Council to retain the land and property in a 15 – 3 majority vote.

Recently the local board put forward a proposal to retain the land and utilise the building that was once the old Howick Borough Council Chambers.

Board Members Jim Donald, Mike Turinsky, Adele White, John Spiller and Peter Young joined local board chair David Collings in presenting to the committee.

Panuku, the property and development arm of Auckland Council, had recommended that the property be disposed of as part of development the Howick Town Centre.

However, after a strong case from board members, the committee has given the Howick Local Board a year to come up with a plan to upgrade and make use of the building.

The board would be expected to provide funding for various aspects of the proposal such as the building upgrade.

Collings says the building, which has sat unused for more than a decade, is a valuable asset and needs to be safeguarded for future community use.

There is a long list of community groups desperate for premises for which 34 Moore Street would be the perfect fit, they say.

The local board, who has been leasing small office space in the Pakuranga Plaza, are also hoping to use the Moore Street property as a more suitable local board office premises.

The board also argued upgrades on the building to make it fit for purpose is far less than what Auckland Council has previously stated.

They expressed frustration that

this was still being used as an obstacle to utilise the premises.

“When we housed Uxbridge Arts Centre in this site while their new building was being built, we were told that [34 Moore Street] was going to require over $100k of work. But when we challenged this we got away with only $20k of work being required,” Collings says. “The Governing Body of Auckland Council has given us a stay of execution on this building and we very much appreciate the support from councillors.”

Collings says the board has a lot of work to do around renovations and working out how to best utilise this building for the benefit of the wider community.

Long-standing problems with buildings and infrastructure at Middlemore Hospital and the Manukau SuperClinic will be fixed following an $80 million investment, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced yesterday.

Problems with leaky buildings, including rot and mould in the walls, and earthquake-prone facilities are all symptoms of years of neglect and underinvestment, she said.

Health Minister David Clark said the funding means Counties Manukau DHB can plan with certainty and develop business cases for four important projects: ➤➤Re-cladding the Kidz First Building, as part of an ongoing phased approach to re-cladding clinical buildings at CMDHB ➤➤Relocating the radiology department from the aging Galbraith building to the Harley Gray building ➤➤Establishing a radiology hub at the Manukau SuperClinic site (currently patients have to be transferred to Middlemore for CT and MRI services) ➤➤Critical infrastructure work at the Manukau SuperClinic including new plant room/substations, IT, medical gases and parking – all needed to support expansion of clinical services in the short to medium term

his week Sommerville Veterinary Centre marked a special milestone with their 25th birthday celebrations.

The team gathered with cupcakes, decorations and party hats on Monday morning to celebrate a quarter century of putting “pets first”.

It was 1993 when Sommerville Veterinary Centre first opened its doors. Botany, Whitford and the surrounding suburbs.

“We have a fantastic team of doctors and nurses that speak a range of languages from Russian to Middle Eastern, German, French, Mandarin and Korean,” she says.

“We envisage in the near future we will be able to have more nurse lead clinics including our recently introduced paediatric clinic which has been a great success.

“Our nurses are such a great resource and are very capable which gives us the opportunity to offer a whole lot more of great care to our patients,” says Mrs Shepherd.

Looking back at the journey of Pakuranga Medical Centre which has come a long way, she says, “Ten years ago we merged three medical centres to combine our strengths and were very excited

about the new project till the Auckland City Council announced the AMETI project.

“We have a very good team working with us that have a great respect for the Pakuranga and surrounding areas and the people living there. Now the end result is this spectacular project. The feedback from patients has been very positive and pleasing.

The centre will have a formal opening on Monday, December 3 at 5.30pm, with the Minister for Health Dr. David Clark as well as high profile guests from the District Health Board and Primary Health Organisation attending it.

here’s just 10 sleeps until Howick Santa Parade and organisers Bo and Pip Burns are putting the final frantic touches to the very full programme.

Bo promises this parade – marking the 65th anniversary of Howick Santa festivities in the village – will be jam-packed with fun events, activities and floats on Sunday, December 9.

Pre-parade entertainment is from 11am–2pm up and down Picton Street with four face painters, two clowns, stilt walkers. The main stage features fashion parades, dance troupes, a magic show and a surprise act at midday.

The parade begins at 2.30pm with 60 floats this year.

Uxbridge Road has four local sports clubs representing local cricket, soccer, netball and rugby operating a Give-it-aGo section. “All the local banks have kindly donated prizes on the day for the clubs to give out as spot prizes,” said Bo. “This will be from top of Uxbridge to where the car park starts. Access is still available to that car park and Super Liquor.”

Moore Street will be closed with free toy pony rides, massages for parents, real fruit ice cream, candy floss, a hot rod show and a “few more things”.

Choir hits right note

Shocked but happy to be Youth MP

Year 11 student, Beth Cutler, wants to be an engineer. However, when the Pakuranga College student is not studying robotics or doing maths homework, she is choral singing.

Beth is currently a member of the Auckland Girls Choir and her supportive parents make regular trips from Howick to Remuera so that she can attend rehearsals.

Two years ago, Beth auditioned for the New Zealand Secondary Students Choir.

“It seemed like the logical next step,” she says.

The choir only accepts a few members every two years. Beth had auditioned for it earlier but was not successful. A lot of people would have given up, but not her.

She decided to take singing lessons to increase her chances of gaining entry when the next round of auditions came around.

Those auditions took place across New Zealand over 10 days in September – 250 hopefuls auditioned, but only 56 were accepted.

One of these was Beth.

“I’m really looking forward to going to rehearsals in different parts of the country and getting to know the other people in the choir,” she says.

Rehearsals take place during the first week of each school holiday, which is quite a commitment for any young person. The location changes between Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin, and visiting choristers are billeted with the families of local members.

The choir also goes on an international tour every two years.

Anna Bowron, executive officer for the NZSSC says, “We will tour in April 2020 but we have not confirmed the destination yet. Past destinations include Hong Kong, Shanghai, British Columbia/Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, South Africa.”

spiring politician Will Ford will get a real taste of life as an MP when he goes to Parliament next year.

The 17-year-old has been selected as Youth MP for the Hunua electorate at Youth Parliament 2019.

MP Andrew Bayly picked Will after a rigorous selection process that involved a diverse group of students from the electorate.

“I was impressed by the calibre of the candidates who applied. We have some outstanding young people in the electorate and it was a tough job having to pick only one person,” says Bayly.

“Will impressed me with his confidence, intelligence and knowledge of politics and I’m sure he will make a great job of representing the young people of our electorate.”

The Year 12 student is planning to study law at university with the ultimate goal of moving into politics.

He was stunned when he heard the news that he’d been selected, he says. “I could see a lot of people had applied and that it would be really competitive so I was shocked but very happy.”

Will says his interest in politics is relatively new and was confirmed when he became part of a mooting team that won the Waikato National Secondary Schools’ Mooting Competition.

In mooting, two opposing teams of ‘lawyers’ argue a legal case before

a judge based on the facts of a problem. Will says he enjoyed the process and the competition.

“You have to be diligent - because it’s really hard work - and disciplined in your thinking.”

And he thinks those skills will come in handy when he attends Youth Parliament.

The six-month programme begins on March 1 when Will’s training as a Youth MP starts. It will help him understand his role and prepare him for Wellington.

He will join 119 other Youth MPs on July 16-17 to learn about the government decision-making process and share their views of New Zealand youth alongside the country’s leaders. They will sit on select com-

mittees, ask questions of ministers and debate legislation in the House.

Will has to submit potential topics to be discussed, deliver projects and connect with young people in the electorate to make sure he understands their views.

Some of the issues he’s already identified an interest in exploring include addressing mental health problems in schools, and improving education systems and NCEA standards to make our students more competitive internationally.

He says he’s really looking forward to being involved and trying his best to represent the views of young people in the electorate.

“And it will be cool to see where it all happens.”

I

t was a celebration of art, creativity, culture and diversity.

The incessant rain didn’t stop the opening of the Cherry Blossom Art Salon Festival held in conjunction with the two-day Cherry Blossom Festival at the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple in Flat Bush at the weekend.

An entertaining lion dance followed by the sheer beauty and virtuosity of technique by harp player Lana Solar set the mood for the opening of the art exhibition.

The event was attended by

special guests including Howick Local Board members Adele White and Peter Young, Counties Manukau East Police area commander Inspector Wendy Spiller, strategic advisor for Human Rights Commission Inspector Rakesh Naidu and Howick Ward Councillor Sharon Stewart.

The Cherry Blossom Art Festival, which runs until December 9, has works of more than 90 artists exhibited at the Fo Gaung Yuan Art Salon.

Curated by Venerable Abbess Manshin, there are more than 300 exquisite works of art that include wooden and copper sculptures,

glass artworks, jewellery, ink paintings, oil paintings on canvas that each tell a story through different mediums.

The idea behind the festival is to encourage people to share their learning through art, to connect and come together in harmony to create a better society.

The popular tea meditation ceremony as well as the Blessing of the Baby ceremony had a lot of young families with their babies in tow waiting to be blessed by the Venerable Abbess.

2018 Howick Village Midnight Madness

T

his year Midnight Madness had a record crowd, due to the local advertising and out of area promotion.

The village had a variety of entertainment throughout the evening - new performers plus the old favourites entertained the young and old Popular as ever with all ages was the traditional Christmas lights, toys and the snow cave at Fencible Drive, put up by Howick Lions—a place where kids, adults and all cultures shared and celebrated the joy of Christmas.

Santa popped in for a few hours, meeting and greeting his fans. If you missed him, he will be back on December 15-24 from 7pm-10pm.

The highlight was the rich tradi-

tion of switching on of the colourful lights of the Christmas tree on Stockade Hill where hundreds had gathered to see it light up. The hill came alive with live music and dance performance by Red Studio that kept the audience amply entertained.

Also working the crowd and getting them to dance on the street was singer, entertainer Mark Taipari.

The beautifully-decorated Christmas trees from the schools, kindergartens and local groups were a nice touch, and will be on show until Christmas Eve bringing colour and festive cheer to Picton Street.

The retailers had a great evening also, and they tell me the customers were in a real festive mood.

Congratulations’ Howick Business Association, Howick Local Board and all those involved on a fantastic Midnight Madness 2018.

This light-hearted and child-friendly retelling of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ through dance is on Sunday December 9 at the Vodafone Events Centre.

Alice, who is played by 17-year-old Megan de Kock, falls down the rabbit hole whilst chasing the white rabbit.

Along the way she meets ballet flamingos, tapping dancing cards, Cheshire kittens and the more well-known characters we all know and love.

Students from the ages of three years upwards have been busy learning their dance moves from the start of the school term in October. All will take on different roles in the telling of this magical tale.

The next meeting for the Probus Club of Howick is at 10am on December 14 at St Andrews Church Centre, Vincent St Howick. It is a special Christmas meeting. The Probus Club of Howick is a combined club for both retired or semi-retired ladies and men.

uch as I enjoyed Scott McLaughlin’s Supercar championship win in Newcastle on Sunday, the amazing effort of the New Zealand team in beating Japan to make the semifinals of the Fifa Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay topped it.

The popular McLaughlin was favourite, especially after Kiwi rival Shane van Gisbergen’s Saturday victory was negated when it was ruled his car was lowered to the ground with the refuelling hose still attached during his final pit stop.

That left van Gisbergen gutted and he had to settle for fourth in Sunday’s final race in which McLauglin’s second behind David Reynolds secured him the title he had come so close to winning last year but for the three penalties he incurred.

In contrast, nobody but coach Leon Birnie and his brave New Zealand team gave them a chance of beating highly-rated Japan in their Under-17 Women’s World Cup quarter-final.

Yet they played with confidence to hold them to a 1-all draw before winning a spine-chilling shootout 4-3.

It was great to get them exposed to some professionals, and take a few tips into their own game.

“They really enjoyed getting to hoop with the people they look up to and aspire to be.”

He added, “Our basketball programme has grown from strength to strength in the last six seasons, from 90 kids to 200 in 2017. It’s a family: we respect and care for each and every one of our members, and this shows in the way we play and interact off the court.”

Breakers players Shea Ili, Jordan Ngatai, Shawn Long and Tai Wesley were extremely impressed by the school’s new gymnasium. They spent an hour shooting hoops and chatting with the students and even stayed around to spend some time with students from the special needs Pegasus Unit. Shea Ili commented: “We had a great time at Pakuranga College. It’s awesome to see the love of the game there and the junior teams showed a lot of potential. It’s always fun to get out and see the growth of basketball in the community, and how kids of all abilities just love having a shoot around.”

hanks to the efforts of three enterprising students, junior basketball players at Pakuranga College had the opportunity to take time out from their studies and shoot hoops with four members of the SKYCITY Breakers on Wednesday 21st November.

Rishi Kasireddy, Jon Dinglasan and Blair Truscott all entered a competition run by Flava Radio, to win a visit from the Breakers to one lucky school. Rishi, who won a VIP experience with the team, doesn’t actually play basketball. However, as newlyappointed Chairperson of the Student Sports Council, she is taking her role very seriously.

She entered the competition on behalf of all of the school’s basketball fans, saying, “I really want people to know about the amazing basketball programme we have here at Pakuranga College. It’s run

Hannah Blake from Saint Kentigern College has been named Young Sportswoman of the Year by College Sport Auckland. Blake, named as top female in the football category in the Young Sportsperson of the Year (YSPOTY) Awards, went on to take the main prize.

he ramshackle shed wears a cheerful look as Crystal Steel has transformed it into a cheerful and vibrant Christmas speciality shop that sits next to St Andrew’s Opportunity Shop on Vincent Street, Howick.

Three years ago Crystal realised that there were a lot of Christmas gifts and decor that people donated throughout the year which was taking up a lot of shelf space at the Op shop.

“We were running out of space and decided to have a separate Christmas shop in the shed next-door where people can buy a wide variety of Christmas stuff at a very cheap price.

We’ve been running it for the last two years; this will be the third year,” says the energetic 80-year–old Howick resident.

“We collected around $1000 last year, which all goes to charity.”

Having volunteered for St Andrew’s Op Shop for over 46 years, ever since it started in Otara before moving to Howick, Crystal has seen a huge change as far as charity shops go.

“There were times when people would eagerly wait right outside the shop on a Tuesday or a Thursday as we brought in new stock and they would

Charity begins with Christmas Op shop

A wide variety of Christmas decor is available for less than half the price at the Christmas Speciality shop, says volunteer Crystal Steel.

“I remember the time when a gentleman bought a suit from us for around $20 and wore it to his wedding.

He dropped in at the shop on the way to the wedding to show us how well it fitted him,” she says.

Beverley Riley, who has also been a long time volunteer, says that more often than not people would buy stuff on layby and, on benefit day, they’d drop in to collect bags full of goodies.

Whilst there were lots more volunteers at the shop then, now the average age of volunteers is 70 to 80 years. The ladies fondly mention 96-year-old Lorraine Stewart who sometimes takes washing baskets home to give the old clothes a wash. She even irons them and gets them on a hanger, ready for sale.

As they say, it’s all for a good cause! ► The Christmas shop is open till December 8. Hours: 10am -2pm weekdays, 10am-12noon Saturdays.

Chelsea Winter’s Festive Cheese Log Prep time: 25 minutes, plus 1 hour setting time Serves: 16 ► 500g cream cheese ► �/� cup shelled pistachio nuts ► �/� cup pecans ► �/� cup hazelnuts ► 200g feta ► 1 tbsp Dijon mustard ► 1 tsp horseradish sauce ► 1 clove garlic, crushed ► zest of 1 lemon plus 2 tsp juice ► big pinch chilli flakes

Okay, it’s not the most flattering of names, but I like it! People go nuts over this, and it’s a really economical way to serve crackers and cheese for a crowd — which can be a costly exercise otherwise. And just look at it — it’s a beautiful log of festive cheese!

Preheat the oven to 180°C regular bake.

Take the cream cheese out of the fridge and let it come to room temperature.

Add the pistachios, pecans and hazelnuts

to a small roasting dish and bake in the oven for 8–10 minutes or until fragrant and turning golden. Chop to a coarse crumb (or use a food processor). Set aside.

Add the cream cheese, feta, mustard, horseradish, garlic, lemon zest and juice, chilli and peppers to a mixing bowl and beat with a wooden spoon to combine evenly (or use a food processor). Stir through the cranberries, apricots, chives

► ¼ tsp ground white pepper ► ¼ tsp freshly cracked black pepper ► ½ cup dried cranberries, finely chopped ► ½ cup dried apricots, finely chopped ► 2 tbsp chopped fresh chives ► 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

and parsley.

Lay one or two large pieces of greaseproof paper on the benchtop depending on whether you are making one or two logs. Spoon the mixture onto the paper in a rough log shape, fold the paper over and form into a log, or to your desired shape and size. It might take a bit of rerolling and shaping. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.

Scatter the chopped nuts on a clean tray.

Unwrap the cheese log or logs and roll in the nut mixture to coat evenly. Wrap in cling wrap and refrigerate until needed — up to a few days, as long as it’s tightly sealed.

As well as making sure everyone has a good time, employers and their staff need to be aware of some of the risks that can arise through social interaction outside the usual work environment, particularly when a drink or two is involved.

“They just need to consider the risks that can come about in these situations.

“Many owner-managers don’t realise, but a lot of the legislation which they have to adhere to during the working day applies just as equally to Christmas parties, and ignoring it could lead to costly and time-consuming legal issues,” she said.

Sexual harassment “If the work Christmas party is organised and paid for by the employer, the obligations generally remain the same as though it was in the workplace. Employers are therefore advised to clearly outline what is inappropriate behaviour and what the repercussions can be if misconduct takes place,” she said.

The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) says that the definition of the ‘workplace’ — and therefore what constitutes workplace sexual harassment — has become broad due to the increase in digital technology, such as email and social media, which means our working hours are no longer limited to 9am-5pm.

Overconsumption of alcohol The celebration atmosphere also means there is a high chance of alcohol in the mix, which brings with it additional challenges for employers.

For health and safety purposes and in an attempt to reduce the chances of inappropriate conduct, Lestrange says employers should ensure the service of alcohol is responsible and employees have plenty access to water and food, “You might also consider an early cut-off time for the service of alcohol.”

Getting home safe The potential consequences for employers found to be negligent should not be underestimated.

If an employee is injured on their way home from the function, the employer could be faced with a workers’ compensation claim.

The seriousness of these issues should be enough to encourage employers to take proactive steps to educate and supervise their team.

Preparing transport home is a highly effective way to minimise the risk: “If someone gets too intoxicated, send them home safely straight away. Don’t let them get behind the wheel.”

Ruined reputations Professional and business reputations are at risk. Imagine the difficulty a boss would have managing their team if they drunkenly share inappropriate information about their love life.

Other examples might include bumping and grinding on the dance floor or a solo attempt on the karaoke microphone.

Christmas Wonder Park is going to be held for the very first time at Barry Curtis Park, Flat Bush on December 15 from 12noon to 6pm.

There will be carols on the greens, a Christmas story walkthrough that tells the traditional Christmas story in a modern way, fun and games as well as entertainment stalls.

Music performances, international food stalls and

information stalls for each community group as well as the Howick Local Board will be there to connect to the community.

Joshua Yang, a pastor with New Hope Community Trust based in Botany, says he came up with the idea of hosting a oneday celebration for Christmas in the heart of a new and growing community along with Local Howick Board member Mike Turinsky, also a pastor with the

He says that the vision of this event is to bring different cultural groups, various business parties, religious organisations and government officials in the area together, “to build a sense of community with the most important celebration of the year, reflecting a true Christmas spirit”.

Joshua says his passion has always been to bring the community together.

“I have organised a similar

event in St Heliers where school choirs and community groups came to together to present Carols on the Green; the idea was to bring them together, where schools and community groups (both Kiwi and multicultural groups) present their performances,” he says.

Macleans College students have designed the Christmas Walkthrough and schools like Mission Heights Jr College, Pakuranga Intermediate, Tindal

Park Primary and Botany Downs Secondary College are also involved in the event.

He says that a similar event was held two years ago in a school courtyard by Ormiston Community Vision and was sponsored by the local board.

“We developed on what has been done before and bring this event to a public park where there it reaches out to the entire community and gets them involved.”

oing your Christmas shopping online can mean not having to deal with car parking and crowded shops – and sometimes you can get real bargains when you buy online.

But beware, there are a lot of people out there who want to take your money and not deliver the goods. Think before you hit the check-out button.

“If you buy goods or services online, there are some really important things you need to know about who you are buying from because this can affect what your consumer rights are if the sale goes wrong,” says Louise Boswell of Citizens Advice Bureau Pakuranga.

“You’re covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act and the Fair Trading Act for goods or services sold by a business that is based in New Zealand - even if you bid for it in an auction. But if the seller is not a business or if they are based overseas you

don’t have much protection.”

Louise says that if you do want to buy from a private seller, you can minimise your risk by getting their full name and address (in case you need to track them down later), checking the feedback from past customers, and - if at all possible - inspecting the item before you hand over your money.

“If you bought your Christmas presents from a New Zealand trader then those presents are covered by the Consumer

Guarantees Act, even after you’ve gifted them and this also applies if you bought them on sale. That means they have to be fit for purpose, acceptable quality and fit their description,” she says.
