Halloween didn’t pass unnoticed locally. Kids and their parents embraced the ‘spooktacular’ event by dressing for the occasion to tour the streets with a bit of devilish fun in mind on October 31.

But one house in Chapel Road, Botany went a spirited step further with a little scary window dressing – it was sure to attract its fair share of All Hallow’s Eve vampires and ghouls, witches and warlocks and maybe some more modern or gentle takes such as ‘fortnite’ costumes, teen wolves, little pumpkins and a fairy or two.

Kiwi ironman legend Cameron Brown, from Dannemora, claimed a win in last week’s Tri-Factor Series Quzhou International Half Ironman in China. “Lucky to have cool conditions and some rain especially only a week after Kona and a lot of travelling to get here,” he wrote on Facebook. Brown, 46, was the oldest to have qualified in the pro field for the previous week’s Ironman World Championship in Hawai’i where he finished 22nd. His time in Kona of 8:25:30 was 6 minutes slower than his fastest ever time on the island - 8:19hr in 2005 - when he finished second.

MP Jami-Lee Ross – now an independent tweeted on Tuesday afternoon that he has assigned his proxy vote to the National Party from which he has become estranged.

Ross, who was expelled from the National Party following an acrimonious and public dispute, tweeted today: “I appreciate all the recent messages of support. I was well looked after by the fantastic people at Middlemore, and grateful for their care.

“On medical advice I remain on leave, but have given National my proxy vote to ensure Botany continues to be represented in Parliament.”

He included on his tweet a copy of a letter he has sent to National Party Chief Whip Barbara Kuriger he sent via email.

It reads: “To enhance the maintenance of the proportionality of political party representation in Parliament as determined by electors, I write to provide my proxy vote to the National Party as follows: I, Jami-Lee Ross MP, hereby assign my proxy vote to the National Party whips, until this proxy is revoked, to be exercised at all times in support of the vote of the National Party.”

ven as trees are being recklessly chopped down to create high density housing in Auckland, groups of volunteers are working hard to ensure Mangemangeroa Reserve—the lungs of east Auckland -are maintained.

The Friends of Mangemangeroa were thrilled when Fritz Retief, a nature-loving employee with Auckland International Airport (AIAL), nominated them for an Auckland Airport staff grant.

The Friends of Mangemangeroa are an environmentally friendly group supported by Forest and Bird, Rotary, schools as well as Auckland Council to replant, restore and maintain the bush.

AIAL makes 30 grants of $1000 to schools and community groups across Auckland and provides and an opportunity each year for staff members to name the causes they would like to support.

Fritz, a senior health and safety business partner who has been a part of a tramping club for more than 21 years and knows a number of trampers including Howick Local Board member John Spiller, says, “Having worked with a wide cross-section of groups across all ages and ethnicities at the scenic reserve I believe the work they do is fantastic!

“I nominated them so that so they can continue their dedicated work to restore and protect the native bush in the Mangemangeroa Valley Reserve.”

Spiller, Howick Local Board’s Environment portfolio lead, says, “The Howick Local Board views the Mangemangeroa reserve as one of the premier recreation reserves in the Howick ward and is thrilled that AIAL have voted to grant $1000 towards enhancement projects for this special place.

“I am particularly pleased that the donated funds will be put towards protecting newly planted trees and shrubs that could otherwise be damaged or destroyed by pests.

Trader charged with multi-million dollar Ponzi fraud A

Half Moon Bay man who operated a foreign exchange brokerage and trading business has been charged with fraud that allegedly saw his largest investors lose more than $1 million each.

Kelvin Clive Wood (69) entered no plea today at the Auckland District Court to representative charges of ‘Obtaining by deception’ and ‘Theft by person in a special relationship’ brought by the Serious Fraud Office. Wood’s address is listing as Takutai Avenue on the NZ Companies Office register.

The SFO alleges that the defendant operated a Ponzi scheme from January 2010 to May 2017 - using new investors’ funds to pay other investors their reported gains, or to refund their principal investment.

It alleges that 18 investors lost at least $7m as a result of the defendant’s offending during this eightyear period.

Wood has been remanded on bail until his next appearance at the Auckland District Court on November 13.

Fireworks are fun for us, but they can be incredibly scary and stressful for animals. As we head into Guy Fawkes night, here are some tips to make sure your furry friends are safe: • If possible, stay home - they’ll be less stressed with company.

• Walk dogs before the fireworks start - this will help tire them out and hopefully put them to sleep.

• ALWAYS keep dogs and cats inside when fireworks are being let off.

• Close all windows and doors, block off cat flaps to stop pets escaping and keeping noise to a minimum.

• Draw the curtains, and if the animals are used to the sounds of TV or radio, switch them on.

• If dogs start to look stressed, remain calm yourself remembering that as “pack leader” your dog looks for guidance from you.

• If you have small pets that live outdoors, don’t forget to partly cover cages / pens and aviaries with blankets for sound proofing.

• Take special care of elderly or nervous animals – speak to your veterinarian before Guy Fawkes about whether calming medication would be suitable.

• Make sure your pet is microchipped, or has a collar on with up to date contact details in case they are panicked by the fireworks and escape.

Mum hits a century M

um was born Caroline Harper Cox in Auckland, New Zealand on 19 October 1918.

In her later years Mum marvelled that she was actually alive during World War 1 – well, just!

She was only 23 days old when New Zealanders celebrated the end of the war to end all wars.

It was not known then that as a young woman Mum would live through another World war just as terrifying – World War II. Mum’s father was employed by New Zealand Railways and was posted to Whangarei.

She remembers as a very little girl being quite upset about something, so she went out into the back yard and kicked anything she could find to vent her frustration. To her huge embarrassment, when she looked up, there was a neighbour laughing heartily at her.

Mum assures me this was her first and last outburst. I can vouch for this and remember Mum as being slow to anger.

She does not remember how old she was when her father was posted to Wellington with New Zealand Railways.

Mum became extremely close to her first cousin, Merv Hardie, known to us kids as Uncle Merv, who lived in Auckland. He had a best friend called Tom Sandford.

It was Christmas 1941 and Uncle Merv was already married to Miriam (known to us as Aunty Poll). In Uncle Merv’s view, marriage was pretty good and he considered it a fine institution for his first cousin Carol and his best mate Tom – and, what better way to get them together than invite

Tom over to dinner when Carol was staying in Auckland.

“I remember I wasn’t feeling nervous at all even though I knew what Merv was up to,” Mum told me. I’d put my bet on Aunty Poll telling her!

When she met Dad, she considered him a little short, but extremely handsome. “In fact, the Sandford boys were all very good looking” she mused, “and lots of girls chased them”.

Mum and Dad’s courtship and engagement were different to most in that the majority of it was spent writing letters.

World War II was now having a huge impact on Mum’s life; Dad had been called up to serve in the New Zealand Army and they had to steal whatever time together they could.

On 17 July 1942, Dad turned 21-years-old and was eligible for overseas service. It was at this time their relationship became serious. They decided to become engaged.

In December 1942 Dad received word that as part of the 3rd Division, he was being posted to New Caledonia and was given only one week of final leave. Dad needed to say goodbye not only to Mum, but also his family, so it was decided Mum would come to Auckland – but she had used her final “Civilian Travel Pass”.

“I remember”, Mum told me, “almost begging to be given a travel pass - and after being refused I started to cry”. The ticket master responded, “I’ll see what I can do” and much to her delight, Mum soon found herself on a crowded train headed to Cambridge.

Mum and Dad did not see each

other again until June 1944 – but the letters continued.

Mum kept herself busy working as a milliner. Mum remembers the American soldiers coming into her workplace to invite the girls out. “I never took them up on any offer,” Mum laughed. “I just flashed my engagement ring at them.”

It was the 9th June 1944 that Dad arrived home. 20 June 1944 was the day Mum and Dad married in the Auckland Registry Office. After the ceremony they attended Church to commit their marriage to the Lord.

Mum was married to Dad for 74 years. On 31 August 1945, Mum gave birth to a baby boy who they named John after Dad’s father. Their second son, Mervyn, was named after Uncle Merv and then the youngest, a daughter, me, was named Colleen.

Today Mum also has four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

The most important thing in Mum’s life is her Christian faith.

My fondest memories of Mum are ‘doing lunch’. We’d be rich today if we saved the money we spent at cafes over the years, but I would do it all again in a flash.

One can’t name a price for those memories.

Clevedon School is hosting the official opening of its public sculpture trail on Wednesday featuring unique sculptures designed by students.

Public sculpture trail opens at Clevedon School C

levedon School students have been working hard over the last few months creating unique sculptures to enhance their school environment.

Next week they get to proudly show off their creations when their sculpture trail officially opens to the public.

On Wednesday, November 7 from 4.30pm, the community are invited to celebrate the

launch of the sculpture trail with an official welcome in the school hall followed by free reign to wander through the trail.

Students and teachers will be there to explain the meaning behind the unique sculptures they were tasked with designing and making.

From Clevedon schools very own multi coloured world traveller signpost, inspired by the

Dr Seuss story, Oh the Places You Will Go to an intricately designed taniwha to protect the school, there has been no limit to the students’ creativity.

Some sculptures have been made using recycled materials, while others are interactive to help get passersby involved.

You’ll even spot a kiwi who wishes she was a flamingo.

Official trail booklets will also be on sale on the evening to

help you find your way.

The trail will be open until 7pm on Wednesday evening.

ollowing a month long process in search of a Youth MP for Pakuranga, a speech competition was hosted by Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga at his office recently.

Rhea Iyer, Hayley Xie and John Sibanda from Macleans College and Te Haua Taua from Pakuranga College were the four shortlisted candidates who spoke about things that matter to them and what drives them in their desire to be a Youth MP The speech competition hosted at Brown’s office also had Councillor Sharon Stewart and Chair of Howick Local Board David Collings in attendance.

Finally it was Hayley who was selected as the Youth MP to represent Pakuranga next year at the Parliament.

Hayley spoke about the local Pakuranga community she has been raised in and how her community has looked after her and her family.

“It has encouraged me to become the person I am today, with a strong sense of belonging and a selfless desire to give back,” she said.

Brown said that the Youth Parliament is an exciting opportunity for young people across New Zealand, and Pakuranga has a Youth MP in Hayley to be proud of.

“Hayley is currently a Year 12 student at Macleans College and has an impressive résumé that will put her in good stead for Youth Parliament next year.

Sculpture Trail

Police celebrate Diwali with gusto ■■By Farida Master

T

he cold winds and the rain didn’t deter the enthusiasm or the upbeat mood of the Diwali celebrations hosted by Counties Manukau Police at the Manukau Police Station second floor car park on Tuesday.

District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers said that the day that had started off with dark clouds was soon overshadowed by light that truly signifies Diwali, the Festival of Lights.

She spoke about the victory of good over evil that is symbolic of the largest Hindu festival in the world.

The event was well supported by the Department of Corrections.

Paul Rudkin, district manager Manukau Community Corrections dressed in a red turban said, he felt like an Indian prince.

Master of ceremonies Annu Sharma from Corrections kept the tempo upbeat as she introduced Ambika Krishnamoorthy who performed an Indian classical dance, while 10-yearold Radhika Rana entertained everyone with a Bollywood dance.

The highlight though was a folk dance put up by the seniors from Shanti Nivas Charitable Trust that provides culturally-appropriate social support services to senior citizens of Indian and South Asian origin.

Led by Nilima Venkat, the over 70-year-olds were surprisingly agile and nimble on their feet.

The hot Indian vegetarian meal served had everyone queue up on a cold afternoon, including the police, some of whom were dressed in colourful saris and Indian regalia.

ne of the most pleasing aspects about Auckland’s thrilling 40-33 extra time Mitre 10 Cup rugby premiership victory against old foes Canterbury on Saturday was the brilliant performance of Akira Ioane.

In emphatically responding to the national selectors’ call to lift his work rate, the 23-year-old, 113kg No 8 spearheaded Auckland’s remarkable comeback after they had trailed 7-20 at halftime.

At his most dangerous with his powerful bursts from the back of the scrum, he combined low slung solo runs with timely offloads that stretched Canterbury’s renowned defence to breaking point.

With Auckland lucky not to have been relegated from the premiership last year, it looked as though Alama Ieremia had accepted a poison chalice in taking over as head coach this year.

Instead he instilled discipline and with the assistance of Sir Graham Henry, Filo Tiatia, Tai Lavea and Mike Casey, developed a team culture that carried them to a premiership victory against a province that had won nine of the previous 10 titles.

Although renowned for their classy backs, it was the much-improved

Auckland forwards who set the foundation for the comeback after playing second fiddle to their opponents in the first spell.

With a father and mother having represented Samoa and the Silver Ferns respectively and younger brother, Rieko, an entrenched All Black star with 22 tries in 21 tests, Akira Ioane is blessed with wonderful genes. He was the outstanding attacking forward of the 2014 World Series champion NZ sevens team and was a member of the Under-20 national side that won the world crown in Italy.

Yet despite having Jerome Kaino as a Blues role model, Akira had failed to bend his back and do the hard yakka the All Black selectors required of him.

Consequently he wasn’t chosen for the current tour of Japan, England, Ireland and Italy.

However his tremendous workaholic performance for Auckland before 20,130 non-paying Eden Park fans suggests his best years are ahead of him.

After an early setback with a wicket falling in the second over, North Shore’s top order battled away against a very tight Howick attack with Donovan Grobbelaar, Matt McEwan and Rudi Botadra all capturing early wickets. oday we come to honour the life of Isobel Shirley Coulter, known to us all as Shirley.

Born in 1932 you won’t be surprised to learn that she was named after Shirley Temple.

We also come to support you, Barbara as you were her family. Know our love and care is with you at this time.

Shirley was born in Whitford, east Auckland, on January 15 in 1932.

She was the only child of Arthur and Ruby. For her first eight years she lived happily on the family farm in Whitford where she briefly attended Whitford Brick School before moving to Howick District School when it opened in 1937.

In 1940 the family moved to a farm in Swanson and Shirley attended Swanson School – her mode of transport being riding her horse. Shirley left primary school in 1945 having earned the prestigious title of Dux. She was a foundation student at Avondale College until the end of 1948, when she left to enter the work force and attend the University of Auckland part-time.

In 1955 Shirley graduated with a Diploma in Journalism.

Until then she had worked in various secretarial jobs including Federated Farmers.

The newly graduated Shirley moved to the village of Howick in 1955 to establish the Howick Post.

My association with Shirley dates back to the 1960s when I became a member of the Howick Borough Council. I enjoyed many discussions with her, disseminating council news through her paper and appreciating her journalism skills.

I was delighted with Shirley’s contribution to Howick because I was a strong believer in the importance of having a local newspaper.

It was around this time when she presented me with this instrument (trumpet), which was played by her father in a brass band. I believe it was 50 years old when it was given to me, so it would have had its 100 birthday by now.

After a lengthy stint as editor and owner of the Howick local newspaper, Shirley moved on in 1973 to the Information Office at Auckland University where she was employed until 1980.

Her working days were abruptly interrupted at this time when her mother suffered a stroke and Shirley moved to Henderson to care

Sadly, some years later, her father also was the victim of a stroke and he too needed Shirley’s care. After her parents’ deaths, she stayed on in the family home until 2009 when she moved into her own apartment at Waitakere Gardens.

This was a very happy move for Shirley and many of you here today have enjoyed her quick wit and her wonderful sense of humour.

Shirley’s knowledge of literature was outstanding. Before her eyesight started troubling her, she was an avid speed reader, devouring several books a week.

Her ability to recite verses of poetry and quotations was most impressive right up until just over a week ago.

Other interests included crosswords, of course the cryptic kind, other word puzzles and music.

She loved gardening and prior to moving into her apartment she always had a large vege patch which many neighbours and friends benefitted from.

Animals always played a large part in Shirley’s life, especially cats, many of which she rescued. ➤➤Morrin Cooper is the former Howick Borough Mayor.

ountain Raiders BMX Club ran a hugely successful event over Labour Weekend. Friday started with set up and track hand over to BMXNZ officials.

Rider set up and practice started at 1pm. Saturday saw the opening ceremony with speeches from the Howick local board which backs the

event along with NZCT, Lion Foundation, and local business.

The North Island Titles is an international event which hosts a test team from Australia The teams are called the Mighty 11s as they are from the 11-year-old age group.

The four teams race for a trophy and bragging rights. There is both a boys

and girls team from both countries.

This is an awesome opportunity for young kids to represent their country at a young age.

The competition had 600 riders and around 2500 spectators on each of the days. The closure of Bells Road was the making of the event as it gave everyone peace of mind and

Auckland Football have ended the Canterbury United Pride’s unbeaten run in the National Women’s League.

Auckland, the defending champions, came into the match looking to bounce back from their 2-0 loss to the Northern Lights on Tuesday night and they did so with a commanding 3-1 win over the Pride at McLennan Park in Papakura.

The Canterbury United Pride, who had won their first six matches to start the National Women’s League season, went down for the first time in what was a re-match from last year’s final.

The victory means Auckland and the Northern Lights, who defeated WaiBOP 3-0 today, move to within four points of the Canterbury United Pride at the top of the table. These are all challenge classes (amateur), topped off with the four Championship classes – Junior Elite Women, Junior Elite Men, Elite women and Elite Men. These categories are the best in the country and showcase the young men and women who are aspiring to a career in cycling. The classes were amalgamated to race as Elite Women and Elite Men in order to create closer racing. On completion trophies were awarded in each age group.

Mountain Raiders had an awesome 33 riders make it into the finals on Sunday in the Challenge class and three mountain raiders into the Men’s Elite final. All three are Junior Elite riders but held their own against the Elite men finishing second, fourth and fifth in the amalgamated class, which put all three on the podium for the Junior Elite men - a massive achievement for themselves and the club.

“The Mountain Raiders’ club season has only just got underway so if anyone would like to come down and give it a go we would love to see them,” said Mountain Raiders’ Kevin Jago.

On the podium Junior Elite Men are 1st Cameron Jago, 2nd Austin Sue and 3rd Jarod Else - all Mountain Raiders.
