ome hard questions were asked at a public meeting hosted by Howick ward Councillor Sharon Stewart to discuss the ongoing concerns due to the recent storms, flooding and coastal erosion in Howick and Pakuranga areas.

Andrew Skelton, Healthy Waters Operations south team manager, Doug Pirni, senior Healthy Waters specialist and Sarah Sinclair, director Auckland emergency management Civil Defence, had a flood of questions to answer as more than 100 people attended the meeting at the Pakuranga Bowling Club on Tuesday evening.

The meeting that was well moderated by Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga had a large turnout from home owners in Cockle Bay, Glenmore Road and Angelo Ave catchments, as well as Cheriton Road, Mellons Bay and Gossamer Drive — areas severely affected by a spate of storms and floods this year — on January 4, April 11 and June 3.

of the rainfall,” said Mr Skelton from Healthy Waters, the department responsible for stormwater infrastructure.

“The intensity of 30mm in 25 minutes is up to 25 to 50

year storm event for some areas which caused some serious damage.

“We have been working extensively in these areas to engineer solutions but these

are short term. For long term solutions it takes long to plan.”

While everyone in the room demanded that they get value for the rates they pay, some of the questions asked were:

“Why are resource consents for building being given even when there is flooding in those areas that we can’t cope with”?

“We haven’t seen anyone sweep the leaves off the grates in the streets for years now.... why are people not informed that they must clear it themselves?”

“What about the ongoing danger to properties by the creek in Cockle Bay that gets badly affected when there are heavy rains and high tides? Is any action being taken?”

“Why are people not being fined when they don’t follow Auckland Council bylaws and dump debris into streams?”

While Cr Stewart was disappointed that Auckland Transport failed to show up at the meeting, she was all praise for the work that Healthy Waters has been doing, working round-the-clock to help residents.

She said she will arrange for one-on-one meetings with residents from every catchment affected by the floods.

“We suggest you bring along photographs and video footage that will give Healthy Waters a bigger picture.”

Howick Local Board Chair David Collings is calling for patience with Auckland’s wet winter weather starting to cause headaches for contractors unable to mow sodden turf across the local board area. “People will have started to notice this already and I want to assure the community that the local board is keeping on top of this issue,” Mr Collings said.

The nominations for the Howick Ward byelection will close on Wednesday, July 18 at 12pm. The by-election is to fill a vacancy on the council’s Governing Body following the passing of Howick Ward councillor Dick Quax earlier this year. New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has awarded the following grants in the Auckland region in June. Coastguard Maraetai receives $20,000 towards the refit of a rescue boat while Brookby School’s Board of Trustees gets $20,000 for an outdoor roof canopy and resurfacing of the multi-court.

Among the gaming venues that contributed to these grants are Barrel Inn in Howick and Xtreme Botany at Northpark.

Big grants from groups

Wayne Pivac, appointed in 2009 to coach Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s premier team, is about to be confirmed as Warren Gatland’s successor as Wales’ head coach.

Media reported Pivac had topped a shortlist for the role that included Glasgow Warriors head coach Dave Rennie to take over from Gatland following the Rugby World Cup in Japan next year.The ex-Auckland and Fiji coach signed a two-year contract as director of coaching at Pakuranga United.

Associate principal Dr Paul Bennett, former deputy principal of Pakuranga College, has been appointed associate principal of Howick College after Louise Addison (former associate principal of Howick College) took over the principals’ role at Edgewater College. Mr Bennett has been deputy principal at Pakuranga College for seven years. Curriculum leadership in his previous role led to significant shifts in the teaching culture, resulting in considerable improvement in NCEA pass rates.

Performance pay in shambles says First Union rep M

ore than 50 employees of Farmers retail stores of Botany, Pakuranga, Manukau and Papakura staged a walk out from the stores last Thursday.

They protested at the crossroads outside Pak’nSave, Botany.

The beauty, sales and service assistants were part of the strike action nationwide.

Workers had decided to move from pickets to strike action in response to failed negotiations.

Protesting against low pay and unfair pay reviews, workers at the department stores around the country went on strike from one to five hours in the afternoon.

Sarah Thompson organiser of the First Union strike in Botany told the Times: “If you look around, it’s good to know that the majority are women here. And they have never done this before.

“They are too busy looking after their families and don’t have time for this. It must be pretty serious for them to pick up a picket.

“The performance pay is in shambles. It’s counter intuitive.

Employees get C grades even though the clients have complimented them for their customer service. This doesn’t encourage them to work hard.”

Ms Thompson claims that workers get low grades just so that their employers don’t have to pay them more.

Farmers’ workers typically start on a near minimum wage of $16.50 an hour, she says.

“Currently 80 per cent of Farmers’ workers who belong to First Union are paid less than the living wage.

“For most, the pay scale ends around $17.50 with raises only available through performance pay reviews.

“Such an iconic New Zealand brand as Farmers should be doing better.

“We hope to resolve the issue and end the performance pay scheme.

“There should be an increase in pay rates so that their families have enough to thrive on and not just survive.”

young couple are distraught that they cannot get back $37,777.50 they paid to the wrong bank account.

Shirley Li thought she had transferred the amount owed to construction contractors’ and their bank account at Westpac Botany Junction a month ago.

She made an error and the money went to someone else.

That was on June 7 and now Li and her husband Ivan Soh are anxious that their money has still not been returned. In the meantime their painting and decorating company has had to pay the contractors so they are desperate have their funds returned.

However they’ve hit a brick wall. While their bank - ASB - has been trying hard to have the funds returned, Westpac doesn’t seem to want to know, she said.

A Westpac spokesman told the Times that Westpac NZ does not comment on its customers for privacy reasons.

“However, in terms of general advice, in the event of a mistaken funds transfer, a bank does not have the right to withdraw money from a customer’s account without the consent of the customer,” the bank said.

“It is a standard industry process that a person wanting to reverse an electronic funds trans-

fer should talk to their own bank in the first instance.”

Li said she did that as soon as she discovered her error. She made the transfer at around 10.30am. At 7pm her client called saying they hadn’t received the pay- Ivah Soh ment. “I immediately called ASB to make a direct debit recovery,” she said.

“ASB asked me to call Westpac to get them to hold onto the money but customer services said they couldn’t hold onto the funds. When money goes into someone’s account, it’s their money.”

She was told to “just leave it for the recovery team to sort out” and was calling Westpac every day. Meanwhile after eight days ASB declared it could not recover the money. “Westpac said it’s not their problem. Westpac is not showing any responsibility. They are not doing their job. It’s horrible,” said Li. In frustration she has also been to the police to assist with recovery of the funds. While police were sympathetic, the investigation appears unlikely to speed up the return of the money.

Police could not confirm they were looking into the matter. “In general, police do not respond to requests which seek to confirm whether a specific individual or a

specific organisation is under police investigation, or whether specific individuals have made complaints to police,” a spokesperson said.

The Times also contacted the Banking Ombudsman’s office.

Tina Mitchell, the Deputy Banking Ombudsman – Prevention – said it cannot comment on individual cases. “Usually it’s about sorting out between the banks but that can be a bit tricky,” she said.

“Anyone can come to us – we’ll do whatever we can to help.”

She pointed to their website guide. “As a general rule, banks can reverse a payment made in error only with the consent of the person who received it,” the site said. “Your bank and the recipient’s bank will need to cooperate to try to recover the payment. This usually involves the recipient’s bank contacting the account holder to ask his or her permission to reverse the transaction. If the recipient refuses, your only option is to take up the matter directly yourself. However, the bank’s responsibility to protect the privacy of the recipient’s contact details may prove an initial stumbling block. “You may wish to take court action if the recipient won’t return the money.”

Within four weeks 35 intricately detailed looks were woven, smocked, crushed, quilted, embroidered, draped, pleated and bunched into extraordinary works of silk.

The top 17 were selected by judges to show on the Resene Designer Runway this Fashion Week and include locals and former Howick College students Amber Sterritt and Tessa Gould.

ormer Macleans College student Sara Khatau has won the prestigious Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs Award.

The University of Auckland student, who is currently studying Law and Arts with a major in International Relations, Politics and Sociology, will be presented with the award/ scholarship of $1500 at the Zonta Club of East Auckland’s Annual Awards night.

Nominated by the Zonta Club of East Auckland, Sara was also the recipient of the Zonta Year 12 Leadership Award in 2016.

Sara says she is humbled and credits Gay Gallagher, a member of Zonta International who pushed her to apply for it.

The long list of service activities that contributed to the former Year 13 Prefect at Macleans receiving the international award include her involvement in Unicef Youth and NZ Model UN Forum; leader of the string Amnesty International Club and establishing a new group called LEAD (Liberate, Educate, Empower Adolescent Development) to increase youth engagement in societal issues.

“There is lack of engagement among the youth in issues that affect our society and I saw a gap that needed to be filled in,” she says about the initiative.

Sara also collaborated with a local organisation to host an event aligned with `Find her Smile’, focussing on raising awareness of sex trafficking of young girls in Asia.

Her involvement outside school involved a brush with politics as part of Simeon Brown’s electoral campaign. Sara represented the

youth voice for the locals as well as a participant in Howick Youth Forum.

That apart, Sara found time to be a Youthline volunteer and a youth leader in Global Volunteer Network raising funds for children in Vietnam.

The young volunteer for Salvation Army says that it is important to find causes you are passionate about and align to them.

“I learnt a lot more from the community activities than in the classroom, and it was so much fun,” says Sara who hopes to work for the UN someday.

The Young Women in Public Affairs Programme was established by Zonta International to encourage young women to participate in public affairs by recognising a commitment to the volunteer sector, volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.

hey are master chefs in the making. Natasha Pheng and Farzana Rahimi of Botany Downs Secondary College (BDSC) were thrilled to win a cheque of $1000 at the Eye on Nature Cooking Competition, hosted by the Manukau Beautification Trust at the foyer of the Botanical Garden Visitor Centre, recently.

The five high schools competing for the prize money were Botany Downs Secondary College, Saint Kentigern College, Pakuranga College, Alfriston and Aorere colleges.

The dish that won the judges’ approval and top marks was seared venison and tartare with potato and mushroom croquettes, butternut puree, mushroom soil and kale.

Head of food technology at BDSC, Angie Thomson says that the brief was to prepare a dish that relates to the New Zealand restaurant industry.

“It is a dish that is inspired by recipes seen at some of New Zealand’s most famous restaurants menus and cook books (Cluprit, Cibo and French Café to name a few).

The dish is also made up of locally sourced ingredients which we felt represents many of the classic Kiwi staples,” she says.

and Farzana say that the dish is a fine example of modern New Zealand cuisine that celebrates the beautiful ingredients New Zealand has to offer.

“We used the mandatory components of the competition (venison, potatoes and mushroom) as a starting point and looked for other

ingredients and cookery techniques that we thought would complement these.

“With the help of our teacher – who is extremely passionate about fine food, we trawled through websites and cook books to be inspired by what New Zealand chefs are serving in their restaurants,” they say.

News from Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany Taking action on mental health Mental health is one of the most complex and important challenges facing our country and others around the world. The increasing importance we place on the health of our minds, as well as our bodies, is transforming our world’s understanding of healthcare.

New Zealand is no different from the rest of the world in recognising an increased prevalence of mental health issues over recent years.

Over our time in Government, we increased funding by $224 million for mental health services in Budget 2017. This built on the Government’s continued investment in this area, increasing from $1.1 billion in 2008/09 to $1.4 billion in 2016/17.

That’s what led to us proposing a $100 million programme dedicated to funding seventeen evidencebased policies to tackle the mental health issues facing our communities.

Our approach pushed forward these seventeen new ideas, recalibrating our healthcare system towards prevention and early intervention of mental health issues.

Policies like the expansion of e-therapy options (to provide wider access to support), providing more community-based mental health programmes, getting Government departments to work together to provide comprehensive support to people they’re looking after, and focusing on mental health issues in schools and at home were all part of our package.

That’s why it’s so disappointing the Government hasn’t committed to following through on these initiatives.

Instead, it has reprioritised funding and commissioned a review of mental health.

We added an additional $224 million into mental health funding in Budget 2017

This included $100 million for 17 innovative policies to tackle mental health issues focusing on prevention

It’s important the Government implements these policies immediately so we can help those in need now

Everyone agrees we need to respond to the growing demand for mental health services in New Zealand but a review is not the same as developing and funding initiatives that could make a difference right now.

The best thing we can do immediately for our mental health system is to implement the plan National put in place and use the $100 million we announced last year to help those who need help today.

But funding is only part of the solution. We also need to ensure our health system becomes more responsive to mental health.

MP Capital has confirmed the $78 million expansion of Botany Town Centre is progressing well and has entered the third stage of its extensive refurbishment with the closure of Garden Lane.

This marks a significant milestone of the large-scale development which is on track to complete in mid-2019. The development to date has seen the extension of the main entrance (Conservatory) well under way with the roof due to be added in the next six weeks.

The refurbishment of Market Square (near New World) is also well advanced.

AMP Capital Shopping Centres development manager Paul Hudson says retailers have been supportive of the closure of Garden Lane, and sales have been positive throughout the development. “When the newly-developed precincts re-open next year, we anticipate five new tenants will come into Garden Lane along with existing retailers, most of whom have been temporarily relocated during the redevelopment.” The community garden currently located in Garden Lane will be recycled and the plants will be re-located throughout the centre, while the play area will reopen in the form of three smaller play areas around the

hingles is painful, blistering rash that usually comes up across one side of your face or body. The rash can be throbbing, burning or stabbing and last up to a month. Some people go on to develop nerve pain (neuralgia) following an episode of shingles. This can last several years and is notoriously difficult to treat. The good news is that you can now protect yourself by having the Shingles vaccine.

Shingles is caused by varicella zoster, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox. Anyone who has ever had chickenpox is at risk of developing shingles as the virus that causes chickenpox stays in the body for the rest of your life.

Around 1 in 3 of people who have had chickenpox will go on to develop shingles at some point in their life. Remember that most Kiwis have had chickenpox and that you can get shingles even if your chickenpox was very mild.

Apart from a painful rash, you might also get fevers, headache, tiredness and body ache. When you get shingles on your face, there can be a risk of affecting your eyes and some people lose their eye sight due to shingles.

The ferry pier won the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) New Zealand Excellence Awards – Best Public Works Project under $5 million.

Opened last year, the pier plays a pivotal role as a transport hub for the recently rolled out bus network for east Auckland.

This is a catch-up program that will stop within the next two years. Don’t risk getting this painful rash. Book your vaccine today and be protected.

The long-standing fight to save Stockade Hill views is nearing its end – the final hearing is next Monday July 16.

But the Stockade Hill Defencibles, a small group of locals, aren’t going down without one final fight. The group - Andrew Laing, Brooke Williams, Tracey Fox, Claire Thompson, Jane Moody, Leigh Hodgetts and Ron Fielding - started out as a humble pub quiz team but have quickly become Picton Street’s most popular campaigners.

Like many who know and love Howick Village, they were shocked to find out that the 360-degree views around Stockade Hill were still under threat and that the process of allowing high-density development to practically surround the landmark was still very much on the cards. They decided to take to social media to let people know what was happening.

The Defencibles started the ‘Save Stockade Hill Views’ Facebook page which rapidly gained more than 700 followers with posts on the page reaching in excess of 13,000 people in the area. They have even attracted messages of support from as far away as California.

A regular feature on the page is the weekly radio show playlist request. Andrew Laing hosts a Thursday evening Road Show on Howick’s local radio station East FM and has been playing songs suggested by their Facebook followers all month.

“I find it all very moving” said Tracey Fox. “We’ve had people in their ‘90s writing beautiful messages of support, along with children as young as three drawing pictures.”

Clearly the breadth and depth of support runs across generations, the team received hundreds of messages on their wall and on their Facebook page.

Claire Thompson has been blown away by the level of interest; “It’s been great talking to so many people, so many have said they just weren’t aware that the fight was still going on!” MP Simeon Brown and his wife, along with Howick’s very own town crier Jim Donald have stopped by to chat with the group and show their support.

yan Fox narrowly missed out on a first European Tour title at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open but the pro golfer from Beachlands managed to qualify for the British Open Championship at Carnoustie for the second consecutive year.

Fox, who turned pro in 2012, collected his biggest European Tour prize at the weekend of Euro665,614 or $1.142 million.

n a surprise move, Whitford resident and star of reality show Matt Hancock was voted out of a nail-biting episode of Survivor New Zealand on Sunday evening.

When the Times interviewed best mates and former Howick College students Matt and Dave Lipanovic a couple of months ago, their lips were sealed on who makes it to the very end of the tough reality show.

Ironically, it was Dave’s vote that had his buddy and rocket technician sent home.

There was a huge sense of betrayal when Matt played a tactical game with Dave and didn’t initially reveal the immunity idol he had. It resulted in the best castaway being voted out.

A quick chat with Matt reveals some refreshingly honest answers.

How did you react to being voted out considering you were best at the game?

I knew people would be gunning for me at some point, as that is the game of Survivor.

I don’t regret my game at all. I achieved so many Survivor moments, especially getting the video from a loved one – that was the one I really wanted. ore than 2500 locals turned up for some bird watching on the weekend at the Ormiston Senior College. The Auckland Metro Bird Club was thrilled with the response to their 109th bird show.

“We nearly doubled attendance from last year. We put this down to the support we get from the media such as the Howick and Pakuranga Times and Botany and Ormiston Times as well as the fact that people in this south eastern

corner are getting used to seeing some of the best and most colourful birds in the North Island each year at Ormiston Senior College,” says one of the organisers of the show, David Nicholson.

The club also reached out to local schools and communities with a colouring competition.

Exciting plans are underway for the club to host the next show.

Local bird winners included Juniors Renee Murphy (Bengalese and Zebra Finches) Imo-

Plastic Bags

In reply to Celia Martin and David Mitchell’s letters (Times, June 21) re them grieving over the demise of supermarket single use plastic bags.

I applaud the stand that supermarkets are taking by banning plastic bags and making food trays recyclable etc.

Some 7 billion kilos of garbage and 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris is thrown into our oceans each year.

Four billion plastic micro fibres per square kilometre litter the deep sea and shoppers use approx. 5 billion single use plastic bags each year, these then discarded into the oceans and landfills, and, as these plastic bags can take 20 years+ to decompose, plastic bottles can take up to 450 years to decompose, not to mention the plastic fishing line that can take up to 600 years to fully decompose, this creates a catastrophic endless problem.

One million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die each year from injesting plastic rubbish, thoughtlessly discarded into our natural world, often thinking they are eating jelly fish which is one of their primary sources of food.

Recycle as much as you can, compost food scraps and use compostable bin liners made from corn starch that compost down within 90 days. It is not expensive.

Or you can dig a small trench in between rows in the vege garden, put the compostable food scraps in and when full, cover with soil, and next year shift the planting of the new veges to over the trench and start a new trench between the new rows. Great for the soil and worms.

I accept it is not easy to make the change because it requires some thought and effort but, if we all try our best to adapt, we will see a better world, because, if we do not, we face a major catastrophe with rising world population, more rubbish, less room on the planet, loss of natural habitat and much, much more pollution.

For doubters of charter schools, Sweden has 50 per cent of its upper secondary schools run as charter schools and is ranked 9 in world ranakings.

On the same scale, NZ is ranked 12 and the compiler of the rankings cited our primary schools as the main area of concern.

The overall view was that charter schools ( particularly successful with under-privileged children) can only be as good as the leadership running them, but you could say the same about state schools.

he first of July marks the beginning of a new year in Rotary and celebrates the changeover of presidents in Rotary Clubs all over the world.

It’s that time of the year when the baton is handed over with great pomp and celebration to a new president in what could be described as one of the longest running relays of presidents of the world.

The Rotary Club of Somerville recently hosted a changeover party at Howick RSA with a 4th of July theme.

The top brass of Rotary including immediate past district governor (district 9920) Malini Raghwan and incoming district governor Ingrid Waugh were both present, as president Andrew Harvey handed over the bling to elected president Lisa James.

American Independence Day was celebrated with guests dressed up in red, white and blue stars and stripes, and Donald Trump face cut-outs. Also spotted were Wonder Woman, Pocahontas and the Statue of Liberty.

Past District Governor Dr Philly Karani gave an informative overview of Rotary, including the fourway test and polio eradication.

Grafton tops list of fastest rising spots A

n analysis of Auckland’s fastest rising suburbs in terms of price increases has revealed that central Auckland suburb Grafton tops the list, followed closely

by Mt Eden, according to research by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ), source

of the most complete and accurate real estate data in New Zealand.

Looking at the median price of properties for the six months ending March 2018, properties in Grafton saw a median price increase of 39.8 per cent when compared to the same period last year,

from $420,000 to $587,000 – a $167,000 increase.

Close behind was Mt Eden with the median price for the six months ending March 2018 showing an increase of 36.7 per cent when compared to the same period last year, from $927,000 to $1,267,000 – a $340,500 increase.

In third place, was Northcote Point with the median price for the six months ending March 2018 showing an increase of 19.2 per cent when compared to the same period last year,

from $1,147,000 to $1,367,500 – a $220,500 increase.

Laumape the toughest S

urely the toughest back in world rugby to tackle is juggernaut Ngani Laumape who scored four stunning tries in the Hurricanes 42-24 triumph against the Blues in Wellington last weekend.

They were reminiscent of the storming runs once associated with the late Jonah Lomu and Julian Savea, two wings who were unstoppable when at their prime.

Yet with the All Black selectors preferring injury prone 32-year-old Sonny Bill Willilams as their starting second-five, Laumape struggles for game time in test rugby.

Having scored 15 tries in Super Rugby last year, that remains a mystery, especially when his ability to crash over the advantage line with hard, straight running offers his for-
