The parade’s main organiser Bo Burns (pictured) says months of planning and hundreds of volunteer hours will come to its beautiful conclusion this Sunday with preparade activities starting off the district’s favourite community event at 11am.

It finishes at 2pm and the parade follows at 2.30pm. Weatherwise, forecasts suggest a top temperature of 18 degrees and 29km south-west winds!

He is driven by the thought that he needs to prepare students for the future’.

The shortlisted educators now have to submit a 1200 word essay and responses to five questions on education and teaching in video format.

Ormiston Town Centre begins to take shape O

ne of Auckland’s fastest growing communities is about to undergo a significant transformation, with the construction of a new $200 million-plus town centre being built from scratch in southeast Auckland.

Plans have been unveiled for the Ormiston Town Centre, a newly created urban environment that will include retail stores, restaurants, a gym, movie theatres, a library, an aquatic centre, and a range of public open spaces that will connect to the neighbouring park.

“The Ormiston community is experiencing phenomenal growth, and the Town Centre is going to be a massive transformation for the area,” said Todd Property managing director Evan Davies.

“It’s going to create an exciting new focal point for the community, and we are really excited to see it begin to take shape.”

Built on a 4.5ha site beside Barry Curtis Park, construction is now underway for the 40,000sqm Town Centre, which will include 100 retail and commercial tenants, a three-level parking structure and four major anchor tenants, including The Warehouse, a HOYTS complex, the existing Pak’nSave, and an additional supermarket.

Designed by NH Architecture of Melbourne and Jasmax of Auckland, the centre has a contemporary architectural design, setting it apart from traditional closed-in suburban malls, or big box retail developments.

Historically a dairy farming community, the population of Ormiston is predicted to balloon by 36,000 between 2013 and 2028 – the size of a town like Gisborne.

Howick Local Board Chairman David Collings said community facilities were a priority for the Ormiston and Flat Bush communities, with a new library planned for the Town Centre and an aquatic centre, along with a variety of transport options, including cycle ways and bus facilities.

Built by Scarbro Construction and Savory Construction, the Ormiston Town Centre is expected to open in 2020.

Local WWII veteran Jim East has died after a long battle with illness.

James Wilson East (Jim) passed away on November 29 aged 93. A life member of the Howick RSA and respected member of the Howick community, a private service was held for Jim on December 4.

The Times reported in March 2009 that Jim was presented with the Times War Veteran Community Service Award.

Jim, the report said, kept his acceptance speech brief as emotions took over when presented the award by Times Newspapers managing director Reay Neben at Howick in the Park / Military Tattoo.

Jim has lived in the Howick and Pakuranga area since the 1960s. He gave annual school speeches for many years and frequently lent a hand to host between 200 and 300 veterans for lunch at the Howick RSA on Anzac Day. Mrs Neben said at the 2009 award ceremony, “Returned servicemen are a major part of our community and it’s important for the Howick and Pakuranga Times to acknowledge those war veterans still active in our community.”

Minister opens well integrated Pakuranga Medical Centre The formal ribbon-cutting of the $20m Pakuranga Medical Centre was done by Minister of Health Dr David Clark on Monday evening.

The two-storied, state-of-the-art, people-centred practise changes the way doctors and nurses work.

Offering patients multiple services all under one roof since its informal opening in October, the welldesigned Pakuranga Medical Centre pushes the boundaries for health care—accommodating around 15 consulting room not only for GPs but also for a podiatrist, and specialists including psychologists, orthopaedic and plastic surgeons.

Accompanied by MP for Pakuranga Simeon Brown and DHB chief execu-

tive Counties Manukau Margie Apa, the minister said that the new centre exemplified how integrated care can start with primary care.

“Having a multidisciplinary team working together is invaluable for patient outcomes, this is what patients need.”

Medical director Eileen Stables said that the new light-filled building fundamentally changes the way the doctors and nurses work.

Pakuranga Medical Centre’s general manager Dale Shepherd summed up the move from the earlier premises down the road to the brand new, purpose–built medical centre saying, “It’s like moving from a leaky tent to the grandeur of Taj Mahal.”

Local wows audience with poi routine on world stage ■■By Farida Master

owick resident Katherine Yin Ping Chiu was worried that any mistake she made doing the poi dance on an international stage would be recorded on camera for the world to see.

“I was so nervous to watch the video till I returned to Auckland from Thailand where the Mrs Asia International pageant was held last week.

For the first time on an international stage, Katherine was one of the beauty pageant winners at the Mrs NZ Pageant held at SkyCity Convention Centre in May this year – where she won the title of 2018 Mrs NZ Ambassador and 2018 Mrs NZ Asian International Global.

When the organisers ERM Marketing Sdn. Bhd who have hosted the Miss and Mrs beauty pageants since the last 30 years, asked her if she was happy to represent NZ at the Mrs Asia International pageant to be hosted at Rayong, Thailand, she

For the solo talent round Katherine decided that instead of singing or dancing she would learn the poi

dance to showcase traditional New Zealand culture on the world stage.

She soon got in touch with Taini Drummond, kuia and kaitiaki (trustee) for the Tainui Garden of Memories in Howick.

Taini was absolutely delighted to have a new student at the poi classes held every Monday morning at the Garden of Memories.

Poi is both a style of performing art and the equipment used for a poi performance. As a performance art, it involves swinging tethered weights through a variety of rhythmical and geometric patterns.

While Katherine was absolutely enthused to learn the traditional Maori art form, she soon realised that it hurt badly.

“It’s very hard, and not as easy as it looks,” she says talking about her experience of learning the art form.

“The poi would hit my head and face and it would get red and swollen,” she admits.

“While the poi is quite light, when it gains speed it hurts badly.

I thought I should wear a helmet whilst practicing it,” she laughs.

“I requested Taini to give me a recording of the Poi-E song which I would listen to every morning when I woke up so that I could get the rhythm right.”

However once on stage, she thankfully didn’t get the poi entwined and it all went well.

Katherine even had her 20-yearold son Frederick studying at Auckland University, and who has won the Prime Minister’s scholarship, fly to Thailand for the grand finale to see his mum win the title of Classic Mrs Asia International Fitness Queen.

Now that the beauty queen has returned home with a diamond studded crown, she is back to her regular day job with Auckland Council.

She says she is grateful to Taini for taking her in her fold and teaching her a traditional Maori art form which she could showcase to representatives from different countries.

App shows waiting time for urgent care

n Tuesday morning one of our own was named a local hero.

Howick resident Emma MacDonald was presented with a medal at Kiwibanks Local Hero of the Year awards to honour her work with the volunteer organisation Heartfelt.

Heartfelt is a group of professional photographers across New Zealand & Australia dedicated to giving the gift of photographic memories to families that have experienced stillbirths, premature births or have children with serious and terminal illnesses.

Emma is the vice-president and NZ representative of Heartfelt and one of almost 60 photographers across New Zealand.

“It is a true honour to be invited into such a private space, when parents are facing their worst nightmare, to be able to capture their love, their connection and all the beautiful details of their babies & children.”

Emma is on call 24/7.

Her role involves managing session requests across the North Island, supporting Heartfelt’s photographers.

She also works hospitals to increase awareness about Heartfelt and ensure that every family that meets the guidelines is

Emma joined Heartfelt in September 2014 after seeing an article in which a mother shared precious photos of her son who lived for only 19 minutes. “The images resonated with me so I researched the organisation. I was unsure if I would be able to cope emotionally, but I knew I had to try.”

Emma says she is passionate about creating tangible memories for families, preserving moments that in the midst of grief may not be remembered.

She says the photographs also allow conversations to continue for the families, their babies to be

included in family albums & their names to be spoken among family and friends.

Emma was nominated by people outside of the organisation who have seen the countless hours she donates, both in photographing families & behind the scenes in admin.

Counties Manukau Health (CM Health) is trialling a digital information system to help patients receive the right care for them.

Emergency Q helps patients with less serious problems, such as earache, sinuses, vomiting and colds, which could be well managed in primary care, compare waiting times, see the costs (if applicable) and subsidies they are entitled to.

“It helps patients make informed choices about the most appropriate care for their condition which may be at an Accident and Medical (A&M) clinic in the community. This care could be closer to their homes and values patient time,” says Emergency Department clinical head, Dr Vanessa Thornton.

A screen in Middlemore Hospital ED and a free smartphone app show patients real-time information comparing the total waiting and treatment times for urgent care (not emergency care) within ED and local A&Ms. As part of the trial, in some situations, they can access a digital voucher to cover A&M co-payments. People without a smartphone can also ben-

efit from the system as hospital staff can print the information and vouchers.

Since the trial started in August, more than 500 patients who presented with less serious conditions to Middlemore Hospital’s ED have chosen to seek treatment at a local A&M clinic.

Emergency departments are for life and limb threatening conditions.

It is estimated that it has saved these patients more than 2200 hours of waiting.

Last month, Victoria Godinet went to Middlemore Hospital ED to treat an infection. “When the infection got worse over the weekend, I knew I needed treatment,” she says.

Once the triage nurse saw her, he confirmed it. “But he told me there would be at least a five-hour wait. He said that I could be treated at Whitecross in Otahuhu in less than half the time. My husband drove me there and I only had to wait 20 minutes.”

The system also allows ED staff to track the patient to check when they arrive at the A&M clinic or to give them a call if they have concerns.

On Friday evening hundreds of parents, students, teachers and locals gathered to celebrate the start of the festive season in style.

The night began with Christmas carols from each house, followed by live musical entertainment for the remainder of the evening.

Food trucks, cake stalls and a barbeque were set up with a selection of delicious options to choose from.

The school field was set up with a variety of creative Christmas themed games and activities.

Santa arrived with his elves to an uproar of excitement before retreating to his grotto were students lined

up, eagerly awaiting their chance to meet with him and pass on their Christmas wish lists.

As the sun began to set, every classroom window lit up with Christmas lights and carefully crafted festive displays.

Even when the rain began to fall, the Christmas spirit couldn’t be dampened with children taking shelter from the weather on the indoor ice rink that had been set up especially for the occasion.

Yet another successful Christmas celebration for Clevedon School.

St Kents banned from top rugby competition

lite Pakuranga school St Kentigern College has been kicked out of next year’s Auckland First XV competition as other schools band together to boycott their recruitment policy.

St Kentigern College, which is a fee-paying independent school, admitted to recruiting five senior elite players from rival 1st XV’s to strengthen their squad for 2019, NZME reported.

Mt Albert Grammar School principal Patrick Drumm told NZME the schools were taking a stand against a recruitment policy they felt were threatening the integrity of college rugby in Auckland.

“We needed to take a strong leadership stand, as a recruitment strategy like this is not what school sport should be about,” Drumm said.

“The integrity and credibility of the competition is challenged by targeting elite players from around the country.”

A

rain forecast didn’t deter locals from turning up to celebrate the first day of summer at the Ormiston Activity Centre at Barry Curtis Park on Saturday.

In fact the activity centre was so packed that there wasn’t enough room for a lot of people to do the free physical fitness workout led by personal trainer Eric Wang, supported by Will Liu. Peter Caccioppoli, Senior Activation Advisor, Parks, Sports and Recreation, Auckland Council was impressed with the turn-out.

“I’ve never seen such a big turnout at any of our programmes,” he said.

Organised by Peter Young, Howick Local Board member in-charge of the ethnic portfolio, the event featured members from six local groups including Botany & Flat Bush Ethnic Association, Rainbow Celebrating Life Trust, Rotary Club of Auckland South, Lion’s Club of Howick, Shenz-

hen Association and NZ Chinese Art & Caring Group Inc. There were non-stop activities and performances that included Line dancing, Bollywood dancing, Chinese folk dancing and live music by ethnic groups.

Also spotted enjoying the cultural diversity at the event were Howick Local Board member John Spiller and Howick Ward councillor Paul Young.

Encouraging the ethnic communities to step out and stay healthy Mr Young says, “Every Saturday morning we have dance and fitness classes from 8-9am followed by a workout led by trained professionals from 9-10am at the Ormiston Activity centre. I urge everyone to take advantage of this free facility to keep fit and active in summer.”

Mr Young also celebrated 20 years of being a real estate agent with Barfoot and Thompson by inviting everyone to a sumptuous morning tea, followed by a lunch for past customers and friends on the day.

Cookie seller making change ■■By theresE henkin A little bit of Christmas cheer this year is thanks to one local cookie seller. Rebecca Johnson is one of 131 Christmas Cookie sellers spreading Christmas joy wherever she goes.

For the last few weeks, Rebecca has been selling cookies around Pakuranga and Highbrook. She says not only does being a Cookie Time seller allow her to run her own business, she also gets to make positive change in the community.

Cookie Time supports the Dyslexia Foundation of New Zealand and KidsCan Charitable Trust with profits from its annual cookie sales. Rebecca has also chosen to raise funds for Stand for Children Charity. Stand works to support children whose social and family circumstances place their educa-

“I’ll be visiting the Children’s Village in Half Moon Bay on Christmas week to spread love and Christmas magic to those in need,” says Rebecca.

Customers can also ‘donate a bucket’ which will be given to the children and families currently living at the Half Moon Bay Village.

new community partnership between local residents and Pakuranga College is providing an opportunity to reduce waste and help low income families.

The man responsible for this initiative is local resident, Dr Hisham Alshaikhli, who is a lecturer at Auckland University of Technology (AUT).

“I was thinking about buying a food stand to put outside my house so that local people could share surplus produce,” he says.

Alshaikhli’s two children both attended Pakuranga College until recently. When he and his wife Luma attended the school’s annual open day, they met Dudley Young, who teaches Technology at the school.

The two men quickly hatched a plan to produce high quality food stands so that produce could be shared in the community.

Young says, “As part of the curriculum, our Year 13 students are required to collaborate on a project for a real client. As part of this, they must meet the client’s requirements, using the most appropriate materials and techniques at their disposal.

“We have produced four food stands for Alshaikhli’s project. The students have really enjoyed it, and we are planning to continue the scheme next year.”

Many people know how rats, stoats, possums and hedgehogs were never meant to be in New Zealand. They were all brought over by ships from England in the 1880s.

These pests are harming our native birds, other native animals and our beautiful environment.

New Zealand has a goal to be completely stoat, rat and possum free by 2050, something that no other country has succeeded to do.

Year 8 Students at Bucklands Beach Intermediate School are largely focusing their final term on an environment focused exhibition.

Three Year 8 girls, Nell, Eve and Anna are focusing on the impacts and effects introduced pests have on our environment.

They say we need to be dealing with them in a humane way. Spreading awareness about cruel traps such as glue boxes is important, as well as using quick, effective way to kill pests.

expensive computers might be better spent on setting up a network with some of these old coastal dwellers. There have been two letters in newspapers in recent times by two old timers who have stated that in the past 40 years, there has been no change in high tide levels and I can add to that as I was water skiing at eastern beach in 1949 and sea levels were certainly the same.

If my memory serves me correctly when launching the boat, (sea levels) might have even been higher than today.

Acknowledging success

How pleasing to see Sancta Maria College publicly congratulating there senior achievers of 2018 (Times, November 22).

I have been to two senior school prizegiving’s recently and it is the Duxes of the school that receive the loudest and longest applause.

This indicates that their peers do not feel humiliated or ready to have a nervous breakdown because they weren’t acknowledged but rather that they acknowledge the effort that the winners have made and wish them every success in the future.

Life is a challenge and the sooner our children acknowledge this and learn to accept the challenges that are in front of them, the better will be society.

Govt Fees-Free Policy is a fail T he Labour-led Government’s election bribe of fees-free tertiary education has been a complete failure with the Government’s own numbers showing that the number of students in tertiary education and training continues to fall.

The Government recently released figures that show there are 2400 fewer students in tertiary education and training than a year ago, despite the Government’s Fees-Free policy costing taxpayers $2.8 billion.

This expensive policy was designed to attract more students into tertiary education and it has completely failed.

Universities have had only 10 more students enrol, Wananga have decreased by 1188 and PTEs have decreased by 674.

More concerning is the fact that there are 4740 fewer people undergoing Industry Training at a time when we’re desperately short of skilled workers.

As National’s Associate Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment spokesperson, it is concerning to see so much taxpayer money going towards a policy which is having the opposite effect of what it was designed to do.

The Government should have never over-promised and should be spending this money in education areas where it is really needed.

The question the Government now has to answer is whether they will be going ahead and making the second and third years free as they have promised?

Whilst the policy will help reduce overall student debt when they leave tertiary education, the fact of the matter is that those who have a university qualification will earn on average $1 million more over their lifetime than those who don’t.

This means they are receiving a massive personal benefit, while those working hard in low-paying jobs and paying taxes will be further subsidising their education.

Already, 80 per cent of tertiary education fees are subsidised by the Government and a generous interest-free policy is in place.

The Government should admit that this flagship policy is a failure and that it isn’t increasing participation in tertiary education, and instead redirect the billions of dollars to where it’s actually needed.

uoyed by the success of its Ioniq hybrid and EV, Hyundai has charged in with a trendy, compact, two-wheel-drive SUV that’s 100 per cent electric.

Kona petrol came from nowhere, capturing a big slice of the action; year to date August 31 it ranked 14th in passenger car and SUV sales.

Offering popular and practical Kona as an EV is a master stroke, but there are a couple of ‘buts’.

However, let’s look at the positives first.

Kona Electric has kicked range anxiety well and truly into touch.

Officially its range is 480kms, but Hyundai reckons Kona Electric will do 400kms in real world driving. Go conservatively in Eco mode and 450km is easily achievable.

Kona Electric offers surefooted handling and comfortable ride, the additional weight of the under-floor batteries keeping the centre of gravity low.

The Elite model tested here comes highly specified, with most of the comfort, convenience and safety features that you need and didn’t know you needed.

Which brings us to the first sticking point: charging. If you don’t install an extra-cost AC fast charger in your home (nine hours to fully charge) or use a public DC fast charger, charging it up via conventional wall plug takes a whopping 43 hours!

Volvo has been busy trying to shake its reputation for building safe but conservative cars. It’d much rather be known for ‘safe and exciting’ or even ‘safe and interesting’, and in recent years the Sweden based, Chinese owned company has been heading in that direction.

XC40, Volvo’s first small SUV, oozes quirky and cool. Which is understandable because it’s aimed at a young, green, tech-savvy buyer who wants a fun city car, not the box that it came in.

Initially, the entry-level turbocharged 2.0-litre (140kW, 300Nm) T4 front-drive ‘Momentum’ variant’s performance didn’t excite. However, once ‘Dynamic’ drive mode was selected things got a lot more interesting, but still didn’t gel with the car’s sporty styling.

Stockade Hill – Can we crowd-fund our way out of this mess?

waroa. Heard of it? It’s a stretch of pristine beach, that was being sold off in 2016 for private development. That was until 40,000 public-spirited Kiwis put their hands in their pockets and raised a staggering $2,259,923.21 to buy it and make it part of Abel Tasman Park.

It made news all over the world.

It’s amazing what people power can achieve – ‘when there’s a will, there’s a way’ or so they say. Now, thanks to online platforms such as Give-a-Little, ordinary Kiwis can raise money for a cause that they believe in, without just resorting to pounding the streets or writing reams of letters. It’s called crowd-funding, and it’s helping effect change everywhere.

Janet Dickson dearly hopes that the potential power of crowd-funding will aid her ‘David and Goliath’ fight against Auckland Council’s plans for Stockade Hill.

As recently reported in the Times, Janet is appealing Council’s decision to allow buildings up to 12 metres high to surround Howick’s historic Stockade Hill – taking away the famous 360-degree views.

Her task is daunting. And expensive. The bill for legal representation and the amount of expert evidence required to take her appeal all the way to the Environment Court is huge. To have any chance of success, Janet has been told she could need to

raise up to $300,000 to cover all the costs.

“It’s a huge sum of money I know – but the Council said the community’s previous appeals had failed as we lacked strong enough expert evidence,” said Janet.

The ‘Save Stockade Hill’ Give-a-Little page has been live for four weeks and has received 120 donations so far. Whilst generous locals have been doing their bit, surprisingly the largest amounts have come from individuals further afield. “We’re so grateful to our local business owners, such as the Spillers. Their

generous donations are vital to the success of the appeal – we’re hoping that many more will help us,” she said.

To date, with Give A Little contributions and direct donations to the Save Stockade Hill Views ASB bank account, the campaign has raised nearly $24,000. But almost as soon as the money comes in, it goes out again to cover the mounting appeal costs. So far, funds have let Janet Dickson and her supporters lodge the appeal, engage Alan Webb, a top Auckland barrister, and commission preliminary work by an expert town planner and landscape architect.

The next stage is for the legal team to meet with Council on December 18, a meeting Alan has described as ‘pivotal’.

Robert Scott, the Chair of the Special Committee, remarked that the public turnout was more than the committee had ever seen at a hearing.

Janet is hoping that as well as counting on people’s intense interest and support, many will now help fund the fight.

You don’t have to be an accountant to know that getting $300,000 just from small donations is a daunting prospect - and one that raises a lot of questions, the principle one being, are people willing to put their money where their mouths are? At last count, the population of Howick is around 130,000. So, would 30,000 people each give $10, or possibly 60,000 each give $5? It’s the old ‘price of a cup of coffee’ argument but, actually, when you look at it like that, it’s not a lot to ask.

Fury more than big mouth H

aving returned from the dead in the 12th round, Tyson Fury was robbed when his WBC heavyweight boxing title bout against champion Deontay Wilder was declared a split draw in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Had justice been served, it would have been one of sports greatest comeback stories after the selfstyled 33-year-old Gypsy King has been treated for drug addiction, alcoholism and mental health issues since relieving Wladimir Klitschko of his handful of titles in 2015 which now belong to Anthony Joshua.

Renowned for a mouth that never stops singing his own praises, Fury also showed a big heart when climbing off the canvas in the ninth and 12th rounds after renowned KO puncher Wilder had lowered the boom.

The first was from a bazooka right and the second from a right-left hook combo that looked to have knocked Fury out.

But, like Lazarus, he rose from the dead to take the fight back to a bewildered Wilder.

It was a great contest between a clever boxer who knows how to feint, jab and weave and a feared slugger who has dynamite in his hands but can’t box.

Up until now he hasn’t had to, winning 39 of his previous 40 fights

by KO.

But against a boxer of Fury’s skill, he was made to look clumsy for much of the fight.

With “I’m a freak of nature” Fury having won all 27 of his previous fights, his draw allowed he and Wilder to retain their unbeaten records, with both keen for a rematch should Joshua continue to dodge them.

Howick wins national sevens championships H

owick College’s senior girls Rugby 7s team have become national champions after winning the Youthtown Condors Sevens.

It is the first time they have ever made it to the finals and went through with six tournament wins to win the title. They will now go on to compete in the Sanix tournament in Japan next year.

The senior team is captained by Hinemoa Watene who represented NZ in the U18 rugby 7s team and won a gold medal at the Youth Olympics in Argen-

tina. Both teams came through top of their pools and entered quarter finals on the second days of their respective tournaments The senior girls lost to St Mary’s last year in the quarter finals and were determined to make amends. St Mary’s were one of the favourites for this year’s final The U15 girls lost in the semi finals to Southern Cross in the Auckland competition and met them again in their pool play and showed their skill level and fitness to beat them.

The senior girls finished second in the Auckland competition which is the qualifier for Condors, losing to MAGS in golden point.

They have all trained hard leading up to the national tournament, wanting to improve on last year’s placings - a very focused and determined team.

“These talented young ladies came through the tournament with six wins, 184 points for and only 19 against,” said Adelita Sotutu, the school’s Director of Sport.

In spite of bad weather shortening playing time the Marie Raos Ray White HPCC Premier men still managed to overcome the challenge offered by the highly rated University Xl with comparative ease.

After being invited to bat first by the opposition Howick’s Opening pair of Bill Walsh and Dan Young compiled an opening 122 run partnership on a slow wicket and moist outfield before Walsh was dismissed one run short of his half century.

Andrew Morrison joined Young in a second wicket stand yielding 121 runs before Young was bowled by slow left armer Patel for a chanceless 119. After Morrison went shortly after for 58, Brian Barnard and Dale Phillips took the total to 297/3 whereupon Skipper Walsh declared.

Oh my Reindeer! Air NZ makes Christmas great again

ir New Zealand’s new Christmas video sees the world’s naughtiest children unite in a bid to get back in Santa’s good books, after the Big Man accidently leaks his official “naughty list”.

Released last week, ‘The Nicest Christmas Ever’ shows Air New Zealand flying to the rascals’ rescue, assembling an International Naughty Kids Summit to tackle the threat of empty stockings.

Knowing that Santa is always watching, the delegation of little darlings pledges better behavior – but when talks stall with the US representative, it falls to New Zealand to save the season.

More than 300 children of Air New Zealand employees auditioned to take part in the clip, with 17 selected to star as extras alongside the airline’s ground and cabin crew. Santa makes an appearance, as well as “Noel” the elf from last year’s Air New Zealand Christmas video.

From December 18-23, 7pm onwards, head to Eastgate Christian Centre for the Christmas Walkthrough.

“Trends Police see during this period include increases in alcohol harm events, family harm incidents, road crashes, water-related call outs and burglaries,” she says.

“Police will be out in force, actively patrolling in hotspot areas over the next two months making sure everyone is safe.

“We ask that revellers drink responsibly and we discourage ‘pre-loading’.

“We will be enforcing liquor bans and checking licensed premises are complying with the law and not serving intoxicated people.

“We also urge people to plan ahead and make sure you know how you are going to get home.”

Inspector Whittaker also says it is your responsibility to look after your mates and check they get home safely.

Police also advise motorists to factor in breaks when taking long commutes and to drive patiently and to the conditions, with many roads becoming more congested over this time.

The festive season also typically sees an increase in tension in some homes as well as family harm incidents.

Anyone who witnesses or has information about family harm is asked to contact police.

Anyone who doesn’t feel safe should immediately phone 111.

Police will also have an increased presence near popular water spots over summer and we encourage everyone at the beach to keep close watch on their mates or family in case they get into trouble.

The public can expect an increase in police presence around areas such as Piha and Muriwai, Waiheke, Mission Bay, Orewa, Beachlands and Maraetai.

Police urge anyone who witnesses suspicious activity to call 111 immediately.

$5m extra for City Mission

Last week Auckland Mayor Phil Goff announced his Annual Budget 2019 – 2020 proposal to councillors seeking to help Auckland’s most vulnerable with a proposed contribution of $5 million to the City Mission’s HomeGround housing and social services project.

The Mayor’s Annual Budget proposal also confirms the largest ever annual capital investment in transport infrastructure of $1.2 billion, continued investment in the water quality improvement programme and protection of Kauri, and holding average general rate rises to 2.5 per cent for the coming year.

“This budget is about spades in the ground and cranes in the air. We are using the record levels of funding we’ve secured to deliver the critical infrastructure the city needs,” Goff says.

“While focused on addressing the critical infrastructure issues facing our city, we must continue to help our most vulnerable. I am proposing additional funding of $5 million for the City Mission to support their HomeGround Project.

“This budget is about delivering on Council’s commitment to transform Auckland into an inclusive, modern, world class city.”

School’s can drive BOXING DAY PRICES a big success

otany Downs Primary School’s can drive last Wednesday was a roaring success.

A vast range of food and toiletry supplies was gathered and donated to the Salvation Army Food bank for Christmas.

Once a term the school and PTA arranges a mufti day where it is $1 for mufti and then there’s a bake sale where some of the classes provide baking which is then sold to the students for $1-a-piece.

This fundraiser usually raises $1000 - $1500 per term. This term the school ran a can drive instead where students were asked to bring an item or more if they were feeling generous which would then be donated to the Salvation Army Foodbank.
