A

s far as public meetings go, Simeon Brown’s drug reform meeting on Monday night with National Party Spokesperson for Drug Reform Paula Bennett was an interesting one.

One member of the public challenged Bennett’s explanation of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) levels in marijuana, while a man in his late 20s professed cannabis is lifechanging for reasons he didn’t get around to explaining.

The biggest topic of conversation was next year’s non-binding (not automatically written into law) referendum where Kiwis will vote on whether personal, recreational cannabis use should be legalised.

The question will be asked according to a draft legislation which is due to be released in the coming months.

It would include a proposed minimum age of 20-years-old to use and purchase cannabis, regulations and commercial supply controls, and limited

Bennett again said she would be voting no in the referendum.

She said New Zealand had a serious drug problem and as a country we didn’t have in place the health services and education programmes set up to manage the potential negative effects of such a vote.

“I think that instead of us having a real discussion on what we do with [the drug

problem in New Zealand], the Greens have come up with this solution of legalising before we as a country work through the options of how we deal with some of the problems,” Bennett said in her address.

She said a decision on legalisation is premature without knowing the harm and cost to society of legal personal cannabis use.

urged people to be pragmatic and do their research before voting. She said her research found marijuana to be less harmful and less addictive to her children than any other drugs out there.

The mother of boys made a point of saying marijuana isn’t the gateway drug; the gateway is the drug dealer.

“At the moment we have drug dealers who are dealing to our kids, who just want to

move them on to the more profitable drugs. I’d rather it be [regulated by] the government.”

But her point of view was lost on a few who argued that many drug addictions started with marijuana use.

Bennett reiterated a point made by many people who work in the drug addiction sector and said while ‘weed’ might not formally be a gateway drug, all of the recovering drug addicts she had spoken to are opposed to the legalisation of recreational marijuana.

“It’s where their problems started and they are scared for themselves and for their children.”

Others simply expressed the need for greater investment into treatment for drug addiction and trauma that leads to drug use in the first place.

As well as general members of the public, there were speakers from Odyssey House and Higher Ground Drug Rehabilitation.

In a nutshell, it certainly wasn’t short of healthy debate and divided opinion.

Following a recent successful illegal dumping prosecution in the Manukau District Court, Auckland Council is cautioning Aucklanders to be wary of cheap waste disposal services advertised on social media.

The defendant was charged with three separate charges under Section 15 of the Litter Act 1979 and entered guilty pleas to all charges.

He was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of $1500 and $130 court costs after the court lowered the fine due to financial hardship.

The prosecution followed an intensive period of investigation by Auckland Council’s Waste Solutions Enforcement

“Calls reporting illegal dumping rose 7.5 per cent in the 2018/19 year to 18,395 reports.

“Illegal dumpers are starting to get the message loud and clear that if they dump their rubbish where they shouldn’t, people are going to report it, our officers will investigate, and perpetrators will get caught,” he says.

Sood says although the situation is improving, people must remain alert and aware and keep on reporting incidents.

“Our ultimate goal is to see no illegally dumped rubbish on our streets or in public places,” he says.

Victims of the social media scam were offered very competitive rates for rubbish removal online and thought they were using a credible waste removal service. However, the perpetrator dumped the rubbish in public places around the region.

But multiple reports of illegal rubbish dumping led to the successful prosecution of the accused.

Olympians join search for buried treasure Olympic champions Bucklands Beach-raised Barbara Kendall and Eric Murray have been announced as the final celebrities to join TVNZ 2’s rebooted Celebrity Treasure Island.

The sporting legends will leave their gold medals at home as they search for buried treasure in Fiji when the series premieres on Sunday August 18.

Widely-regarded as one of New Zealand’s most successful and enduring sportspeople, Kendall truly is an Olympic legend. The illustrious boardsailor has won gold, silver and bronze medals – she was the first Kiwi woman to compete at five Olympic Games – and in 2019 was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Most at home on the water, the charity Kendall is competing for is Surf Life Saving NZ. Champion rower Eric Murray is used to coming out on top. The Olympic hero won gold at the London 2012 and 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games and four consecutive World Rowing Champs gold medals.

When Eric retired from rowing in 2017 he turned his focus to family life and he is now the primary carer of his autistic son, Zac. The charity Eric is competing for is Autism New Zealand.

fter a decade-long wait and residents pushing for footpaths, looks like construction of much needed footpaths in Flat Bush will become a reality, thanks to the efforts of Year 11 Ormiston Senior College students.

Ormiston locals have long waited to have four footpaths built in Flat Bush, which will now be delivered this financial year.

The footpaths will be on Ormiston Road, from 249 to Collier Drive; from Murphy’s Road to Lemon Tree Lane; and from Pencaitland Drive to Te Ara Kahikatea.

The fourth path will be on Geranium Avenue from Rohi Place to Murphy’s Road.

The paths will connect to Pak’n’Save supermarket.

Howick Local Board member Mike Turinsky says residents have a group of students supporting a wheelchair-using friend to thank for it.

“Ormiston Senior College has wanted Auckland Council and Auckland Transport (AT) to install the footpaths for nine years and in all that time residents have had to walk on the road or on the grass,” he says.

“That’s hard for the elderly and wheelchair and mobility scooter users and it’s worse in the rain.”

Mr Turinsky was aware of the issue and, after being elected in 2017, began advocating with AT and the board to have the work done. But he was repeatedly told development of the footpaths was the responsibility of the property owner and developer, and would not happen until the property was developed— so it could be paid for from develop-

When Deputy Mayor Bill Cashmore attended the Howick Local Board’s monthly meeting, talking about council’s responsibility for developing infrastructure on council property especially in town centres, Turinsky outlined the issue and Cr Cashmore agreed in principle it was

They outlined their concerns, particularly in relation to access for all, including those in wheelchairs.

“Our friend Jamie Stanford was born with a spinal birth deformity called spina bifida.

“The lack of accessibility causes trouble for Jamie and other people who use wheelchairs and mobility tools, simply to get their groceries. It’s a human rights issue,” says OSC student Kush Killa.

Mr Turinsky says: “I was pessimistic the issue would be resolved but the students inspired me to try again.”

He turned to Cashmore’s office and representations were made to AT asking for it to reconsider.

“It’s taken a long time but talking to those students, who were determined to stand up for their friend was a reminder I should not quit.”

He says Auckland Transport should be commended too. “Everyone knocks AT but they listened to the concerns and acted on them. Yes, it might have taken a long time, but it has changed its stance.”

AT’s spokesperson Mark Hannan confirms saying, “Auckland Transport is completing four missing links in the footpath network along Ormiston Road. The gaps in the footpath have limited the ability of people to walk in the area.”

Wrong-way driver now in police custody The driver responsible for injuring himself and three others in a horrific head on collision near Highbrook on Thursday is in police custody.

The crash, which shut down all southbound lanes for two hours, was captured on camera by the Police eagle helicopter.

The eagle helicopter was deployed shortly after 9am on Thursday when complaints about the driver were first received by police.

After driving erratically

This footage was later leaked to the public prompting an internal police investigation.

Pageant queen takes on world

A

positive attitude, hard work and commitment are the key to one local Pageant Queen’s success.

Dannemora resident Simran Madan recently represented New Zealand on the international stage in the Philippines at Miss Teen Tourism 2019.

She was crowned Miss Teen Tourism Globe 2019 in the showstopping pageant last month.

She was also named Best in Talent and Miss Punta Tierra Blanca Beach Resort.

The university student says pageantry for her is a way of expressing herself.

“One of the most important things that I have learnt through my journey in pageantry is you have to believe in yourself, be confident in who you are, and value what you have,” she says.

Simran first began her pageant journey when she competed in the Miss Earth New Zealand 2019 competition.

She was crowned Miss Teen Earth New Zealand 2019, and Miss Water New Zealand 2019 whilst also winning the titles of Best in Talent, Miss Congeniality and Best in Evening Gown.

Being crowned meant that Simran would fly half way across the

world to represent New Zealand in the Philippines last month.

Photoshoots, media conferences, forums and fashion shows were on the agenda and Simran made it her mission to show the world what it truly means to be a Kiwi.

Simran says she will continue to strive to represent New Zealand on the world stage.

very time you think that they can’t possibly outdo themselves, another Operatunity Daytime Concert does just that.

They never cease to surprise and entertain. It is easy to see that The Epiphanies – the fabulous trio of Rebecca Wright, Sharon Emirali and Gail Tipene – had fun putting the Divas Through the Decades show together.

The 60s girl group filled the hall with beautiful harmony, melody, rhythm and great timing at Operatunity’s Daytime Concert series held recently at St Columba Church.

Accompanied by the wellexperienced musicians in the band comprising Grant Winterburn, Mike Booth and Bruce French, the concert celebrated iconic singers like Connie Francis, Doris Day, Barbra Streisand and Aretha Franklin – to name a few.

Male singers and entertainers Bonaventure Allan Moetaua and Tainui Kuru also deserve a special mention as they kept the

From costume changes to light banter, with plenty of humour thrown in and great choreography, all contributed towards the concert being an absolute must-see.

Rebecca Wright was outstanding on stage, accompanied by the other two talented divas, she had the audience swaying to foot-tapping music.

You would have never guessed that Rebecca had been

up all night with a five-monthold baby and then stepped onto the stage to put up a spectacular performance the next morning – belting out numbers like Summertime, Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend and I Got You Babe.

The concert ended on a high note with an all time favourite Abba medley that had the audience sing along before they grabbed a free sandwich and cake on their way home.

en Fraser, Deputy Chair of the Howick Youth Council, has been selected as one of 22 elite young people from across New Zealand to participate in UN Youth New Zealand’s Global Development Tour.

The tour takes in six countries in January and February 2020, giving participants an opportunity to learn about different approaches that will help him serve the community more effectively.

The delegation will visit the New Zealand permanent mission to the UN, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise as well as the OECD, UNESCO and UN headquarters while visiting New York, London, Paris, Rome, Vienna and Berlin.

Ben is most excited about how the tour will allow him to more effectively serve his community.

“I’m looking forward to learning how some of the largest organisations in the world are tackling pressing issues from climate change to urbanisation,” he says.

“The Global Development Tour is going to give me new skills that will allow me to be a more effective youth advocate in my community.”

Ben is a youth advocate and the Saint Kentigern College student is working across a wide variety of issues in east Auckland and New Zealand.

He has led a campaign to improve student representation in education through a petition to place a student on the board of NZQA. Earlier this year he presented to the Howick Local Board supporting the implementation of a T2

In addition, he is a member of the Youth Board in mental health advocate Mike King’s organisation I Am Hope.

Ben says, “For me, serving my community is massively important. Instead of seeking a part time job, I’ve dedicated my time to variety of causes including better mental health services, youth empowerment, improved public transport and a more effective education system.”

Throughout the remainder of 2019, Ben will be seeking financial support to cover the cost of the tour.

“This opportunity is a large monetary burden and I am hoping to receive some financial support that will help me more effectively serve my community.”

or those of you who would like to see the African savannah come to life on stage with Simba, Rafiki and an unforgettable cast of characters as they journey from Pride Rock to the jungle, Disney’s The Lion King Jr will burst to life at the Ormiston Junior College auditorium, Manawatere, from August 7-10.

Staff and students are excited about sharing this ‘circle of life’ with the wider community.

The creative team from OJC have assembled a cast of more than 40 performers who will deliver this much-loved family show.

In addition to the cast, more than 50 other students and staff have pooled together their tal-

ents in a range of backstage areas that involves art design, costumes, props, hair, make-up, sound, lighting, crew, promotional and other tasks required to bring a major stage production to life.

Having opened its doors as a new school to the local area in 2017.

This is a one-of-a-kind musical production of this scale by OJC. Deputy principal Ryan TimokaBenjamin who has produced and directed the musical says: “Come and see history be made for our school and see for yourself how we are all connected in the great circle of life.

The focus of Company, a concept musical being performed at the Harlequin Theatre from July 27-August 10, is a confirmed bachelor who has just turned 35, has three girlfriends but no emotional commitment to any of them.

The production reviews his relationship with married couples and soon-to-be married friends.

The play is an insightful examination of romantic and marital mores as it gives a commentary on marriage with subtle humour packed in as well as a challenging musical score that the actors do justice to.

It’s story of bachelor Robert, played by experienced performer Ben Wombwell staving off the social pressure to settle down.

The show is led by Grant Meese, one of New Zealand’s finest musical theatre directors, who says the

revival and its success is testament to the relevance of the themes that Company addresses. “Everyone has a Bobby in their life, be it male or female – which may be for various reasons not conforming to traditional notions of marriage or settling down. Everyone who experiences this musical walks away with a smile on their face as they relate some of the themes of the show to their own or their friend’s lives,” he said.

Many actors have starred in the theatrical production of the original Company which is a 1970 musical comedy with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

inated for a record-setting 14 Tony Awards and won six.

As for Company at the Harlequin, it’s great to see the coming together of a group of actors who are a mix of local teachers, lawyers and professionals singing their hearts out on stage.

Dale Smith, chair of Harlequin Theatre, says that none of the actors are paid and everyone volunteers their service. “It’s all for the love of theatre.”

Interestingly, Company is a standout with more male characters which is unusual for a musical and a live band adds to the magic of the evening.

al Lott can’t walk too far anywhere in the Howick, Pakuranga or Botany shopping districts without being accosted for a chat and a catchup.

At 72, she has touched many lives in this community, most notably those of hundreds of girls, now young women.

She is the face, heart and soul of Miss Howick, the beauty pageant, an anachronism that survived until as recently as 2012.

To this day, Val is treated each month to a home visit from at least one former beauty pageant contestant. The girls have been paying homage for years.

To understand this rapport, to know that it has become more endearing with the march of time, one has to consider two things – why Val came to create the pageants and what the contestants got from it.

It was the mid-1980s, for four or five consecutive years, Val noticed each Miss New Zealand on TV was a Howick or Pakuranga girl. And she was able to pick the winner each time.

A single mother-of-three at the time and a frantically busy sales rep selling everything from hardware, cosmetics and brush ware, she chose to also create the Miss Howick Beauty Pageant.

It was her love and became a local institution. And it was never for the money.

“It was the passion. If you go into something for the glamour and high life, you’re off to a poor start,” says Val. “I’ve been blessed with an abundance of energy. I love doing things for others. If I say I’m going to do something, I’ll do it.”

She needed that energy because she organised everything whether she was on the road or not.

“In my car I had a typewriter and a sewing machine. I would sit in the motel at night; I would be writing up the script and sewing the girls’ costumes.”

It was difficult with no capital. In the early years the Howick

Business Association helped, as did Howick and Pakuranga Times’ directors Reay and Brian Neben.

“We had no money. I wasn’t worried for money for me. Anything we raised went to venue hire, power, lighting, sound and prizes,” Val says.

And how did she find her beauties? “Mostly out and about. At first I was embarrassed approaching them and then I just pounced on them” she says.

“It was definitely a gift for me.

On stage you could tell Val’s girls... it was about their image, how they talked and held themselves.”

Getting the girls ready was not easy either but her raison d’être and determination always got her and the newest contestants over the line. “I did have to learn over the years that everybody’s different,” Val says.

“At the sashing ceremonies the girls were normally timid and meek then eight weeks later they’d be brimming with confidence.”

The swimsuit section was never an issue for her or the girls. It accounted for five minutes of a 90 minute show. “It’s a beauty pageant. I didn’t have any problems with it at all,” she says. “Some went on to love it and made good money out of it becoming bikini and underwear models.”

Acting and modelling agencies also shoulder-tapped her girls. It was a stepping stone.

Everything has its time though and after 17 years with Miss Howick Val took on and combined Miss Auckland, Miss Counties and Miss North Harbour to her yearly plan with all winners going onto Miss New Zealand.

“Hence why I know over 2000 girls, their families and nanas and poppas.”

Pageant contestants invariably blossomed through grooming and confidence classes – they started at age 16 – and there was also the sage advice handed down by their matriarch.

Val would not countenance poor behaviour. “I was a stickler...no gossip and no nastiness.

I never, ever had that problem with the girls,” she says.

“I used to say to them, ‘do not become offended, you’re wasting valuable energy’ or “you must be a window person not a mirror person’.”

The fall of the curtains on this big part of her life and those who stepped out onto the stage never ended. Val remained as close to them as they did to her.

“Some mothers would say, ‘My daughter has more respect for you than us’.”

Val’s straight forward answer was ‘I’m simply, not their mother’.”

“One day I got home late and exhausted and I had a shower and got a call. I drove to Ponsonby and talked to one of the girls till midnight. She was at a loss.

“I’ve had calls at 2 in the morning. I hear the love stories and broken heart stories.”

Val, has also attended the weddings of some of the girls and their parents’ funerals as well as the funerals of former beauty pageant contestants. And she relishes their visits, her most recent from Danijela Unkovich (Miss Howick in 2009, Miss Universe NZ – her sister Natasha has won Miss Auckland and went on to be crowned Miss International NZ).

“I’m so humbled,” Val says.

“I had such a hard road as a young single mum. I had plenty of heartache and hardship.

It really helped me.

“The bond of love I have with the girls is nurturing.”

ew Zealanders suffering from cancer shouldn’t have to raise money online or sell their family home to be able to buy life-saving medicines.

Too many Kiwis battling cancer have been let down by successive governments and an underfunded health system that’s failed to provide them with the standard of treatment they deserve.

Sitting in the middle of the two major parties enables me to support good policy, regardless of who came up with it.

Just as the Government’s commitment to invest $1.9 billion toward mental health initiatives was welcome news for the health sector, so is the National Party’s pledge to establish an independent cancer agency and put $200 million towards new cancer drugs.

There’s an urgent need to increase investment in cancer treatment because the vast

majority of Kiwis will know someone who had or has the disease.

Let’s hope MPs are willing to work together in the national interest on this matter. There is no party politics to be played when it comes to saving lives.

The facts around New Zealand’s cancer rates are startling.

More Kiwis die from some form of cancer each year than from anything else.

We have the world’s worst rate of deaths from malignant skin melanoma and the worst rates of new cases of leukaemia.

So any new funding aimed at lowering New Zealand’s shocking cancer rates should be welcomed.

We must also make it easier for people to access specialist care when needed, and our public health system would benefit from increased transparency and accountability.

their doctor with concerning symptoms only to be told they don’t have cancer.

After their symptoms worsen and their suffering increases, they’re then referred to a specialist who diagnoses them with terminal cancer. By then it’s too late.

Too often we hear stories of a doctor who missed the cancer in the first place, yet can hide behind anonymity.

There needs to be stronger accountability in place for medical practitioners who repeatedly misdiagnose their patients.

Wise women of Howick!

As Howick and districts count down to the 175th anniversary, the Times continues its series by Alan La Roche giving readers a glimpse of life as it used to be. The countdown began at the 170th in 2017.

I

n the early settlement years in Howick there were two well known “wise women”, midwives Granny Paton and Annie Nicholas.

Fencible women often had 10 or more children. They lived in cold, draughty cottages with no running water (just well water with no hot water until someone lit a fire under the kettle) but with a caring community who showed compassion and resilience despite subsistence living.

Doctors were generally not consulted about childbirth.

There was no reliable contraception and few painkillers.

Child mortality in New Zealand was eight per 1000 births compared with 14 deaths/1000 in Britain at that time.

Most settlements had “wise women” who understood the skill required for safe deliveries using herbal and traditional remedies. Babies were baptised as soon as possible after birth, as if the child died, it would be buried in unconsecrated burial ground and “would not go to Heaven”.

It was usual for the midwife to live in the cottage, making meals and doing housework for two weeks to help the mother, who stayed in bed for that period. The midwife’s fee was one pound a week.

When she died, she had 82 grandchildren born in New Zealand. John died aged 80 years and Jane remarried Charles Farmer.

Annie Nicholas – b 1815, died 1908

Granny Paton – b 1815, died 1902

She and Fencible John Paton lived at “Springburn” farm in Bleak House Road. After serving in the British Army for more than 20 years, John became a policeman at Bankfoot in Scotland where he met widow, Jane Robertson.

They married in 1843 and in 1847 arrived in Howick on the Minerva. John had joined the army as a drummer-boy and served in the Battle of Waterloo aged 14 years where he was wounded.

Granny Paton was known “to be fanatically clean”, loved babies and had no formal nursing training. She had six children and encouraged breastfeeding. Her only “medicine” was a little brandy and water.

Annie and Fencible Sergeant John Nicholas lived in Cook Street opposite Hawthornden and the parsonage. She delivered seven of Mrs Lush’s nine children. They came from Ireland on the Sir George Seymour, arriving in 1847. They had three children.

He was paymaster to the Fencible pensioners. It was customary to name children after the midwife so some became Ann or Nicholas.

Living close to the parsonage she could help at a moment’s notice. Blanche Lush used laudanum, a tincture of opium extract, during childbirth.

It was advertised as “Godfrey’s Cordial for childbirth and comforter for children”. It was used to quieten upset children, sooth teething pains or to induce sleep.

Rev Vicesimus Lush was the 20th child of his father, hence the name Vicesimus. His journal is the only record of births in early Howick.

on February 23, 1852 “at 11 o’clock in the forenoon my dear Blanche had another child, a boy, to our great joy. He is a fine fat little fellow”. He was called Alfred but died in the Howick scarlet fever epidemic of 1854 aged two years.

The oldest daughters Charlotte [8 years] and Mary [5 years] were taken to St John’s College where Mrs Sarah Selwyn, [the Bishop’s wife] looked after them while their mother was having a baby.

He continues next day.

“Blanche and baby have been doing well all day. The little fellow is the largest and darkest child Blanche has had.

He has a good quantity of dark hair, almost as dark as his mother’s”. He sent a note to the girls telling them they had a new brother and their rabbits, kept for the table, also had babies.

Howick’s first hospital was established in 1907 in Selwyn Road. Many Howick residents remember the Howick Obstetric Hospital where mothers spent two weeks before being allowed to resume normal duties at home.

Cans for Good is worth it With only a week to go, more than 80 schools from around the country have signed up to take part in Wattie’s Cans for Good national can collection to help struggling families with food support.

The event will run over a fortnight from August 5 to 16 and gives kindergartens to schools nationwide the opportunity to help make a difference by collecting cans for The Salvation Army foodbanks - restocking shelves in the middle of the harsh winter period.

With Salvation Army foodbanks around the country already running low on stock and facing high demand for its frontline services, the can collection and education campaign plays a key role helping restock foodbank shelves right around the country.

In 2018, The Salvation Army provided nearly 60,000 food parcels to Kiwis in need. According to Jono Bell, The Salvation Army’s director of community ministries, during winter tight household budgets are stretched to breaking as families face higher living costs associated with heating and health.

Empty buses

I drive from Pakuranga to Howick and back almost every day and two things I have noticed: 1. 90 per cent of the buses I see are almost empty, we jokingly call it ‘The Empty Bus Company’.

2. The traffic lights at the Glenmore junction are only on green for 12 seconds.

Last week you printed a reader’s comment (Times, July 25) about the plethora of virtually empty buses careering about our streets, day in, day out, On top of these, there are also many signed Out of Service or similar.

In St Heliers, my friend uses a bus from Glen Innes to St Heliers for his weekly shop. I say to him, “Do you have a timetable for that?”

He laughs. “Oh! There’s no need for one – they come every quarter hour or so. I just stroll to the stop and wait!

Plenty of room!”

I’m glad I don’t have any shares in that enterprise! I travel a lot by car around Pakuranga/Howick/Botany and there is never a trip without encountering many empty or near empty buses, including double deckers, all through the day after rush hour.

If there is some explanation for all these trips, it would be good to hear, otherwise, if we are interested in cutting down a seemingly colossal waste of money, a radical overhaul of the widespread route planning errors is quickly called for.

e your story ‘Is the Howick Market in jeopardy’ (Times, July 11)?

The Howick Local Board are ‘not responsible’ for the 16 Fencible Drive, building – it was Auckland Council Property Limited (ACPL), now it is Panuku, who each year pay out $10,000 in rates for it.

As the saying goes, sometimes it is not easy dealing with City Hall.

In 2009 (when I was chairman of the Howick Community Board), this building was purchased by the Board and Manukau City Council, because of its economic and strategic value for the Howick Village.

Most of the time since it has stood vacant, despite two suggestions as to its future.

No maintenance has been done on what used to be the Howick Returned Association

Club rooms and the Howick Library.

In my opinion it is not as dangerous as reported (the asbestos report is challenged by an asbestos removal firm).

I personally know of four parties who have expressed interest in purchasing this building, and they all have a community-orientated motive.

In my opinion the safety issues are minor and have been used against the Saturday Howick Village Market.

Various suggestions have been made by ACPL, and now Panuku, as to the building’s future. None have been realised.

It is not the Howick Local Board who are responsible – it is Panuku and previously ACPL for the situation that we face today in 2019.

Swarm into playoffs

Students shine at baseball series Rather than relaxing over the school holidays, a group of Pakuranga College students travelled to China to represent New Zealand at the Asia Pacific World Baseball Series Qualifiers.

Zak Ryan, Jacob Wildbore, Noah Priest and Hunter Southey played for the U14 team and were strong in pool play, beating Hong Kong 7-5, and China 15-13 and went down to Guam 8-7.

They then went on to lose to a very talented Chinese Taipei side in the semi-finals.

Patrick’s dad Tim Holmes says that if you have a special needs person, the best thing to do is get them into sports with Special Olympics and watch them grow.

Age is also no barrier as they can be as young as eight and there is no upper age limit. Special Olympics is also looking for volunteers as without them Patrick would not be where he is today.

Howick Local Patrick Holmes (24yrs) who has Down Syndrome has been with Special Olympics for 11 years.

Patrick participates in swimming, powerlifting, basketball and golf and would compete in more sports if time allowed.

These sports provide great enjoyment for 24-year-old Patrick who trains six days a week and competes all year round.

Howick College teen shines on world stage Canoe slalom athlete Hannah Thomas, 17, took joint 5th place in the world in the under 23 extreme slalom race.

Thomas, from Howick College, has just returned after competing at the Canoe Slalom Junior World Championships in Poland.

This was an incredible feat, as it was Hannah’s first ever time racing in the extreme event. It is a fastpaced event where four athletes go head-to-head launching into the river off a three-metre ramp

onto whitewater and tackle up and downstream gates.

Thomas has also just completed World Cup events in London, Bratislava and Tacen and achieved so highly, she has been selected to compete in the World Cup Final in Prague and the Senior World Championships in Spain in September.

She also recently received support via a sponsorship from Fuji Xerox which helped her on her journey.

With Liam Squire having made himself unavailable, blindside flanker is still up for grabs though Ardie Savea, Sam Cane and Read have the versatility to cover all three loose forward berths.

However while the experienced Read has naturally stated his prefer-

ence for the No 8 jersey, it wouldn’t hurt if he and Savea interchanged positions throughout the game to allow Savea’s superior pace to add penetration off the back of the scrum.

With just two tries scored in two tests, the All Blacks attack is not functioning with the thrust it once did although Jack Goodhue’s try against the Springboks was a beaut after Beauden Barrett made a sharp break off a great Williams cut-out pass.

Goodhue has a future though he and Williams are not in the same class Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith were in the 2011 and 2015 World Cup triumphs. And Ryan Crotty, Anton Lienert-Brown and Ngani Laumape are others staking their claims for starting spots without cementing them. It is also worth remembering versatile Jordie Barrett has yet to be played in his best position of secondfive after being given tests at fullback and both wings.

I applaud the selectors for starting both Richie Mo’unga and Beauden Barrett against the Boks with the former winning the No 10 jersey and Barrett moving to fullback where he was the All Blacks best back.

Nevertheless it was not a convincing performance with too many errors committed on a day superb defence blunted the attack of both sides.

Having recovered from their resounding loss to the Boks, the Australians, never short of confidence, will have gained more from their 16-10 win against the Pumas.

Meanwhile Hansen and his brain trust will want to put out their best team against them and could consider starting George Bridge, who has the allround skills of Ben Smith, on the left wing ahead of Rieko Ioane.

As Hansen has noted, Ioane went off the boil during the latter stages of the Super Championship. Which is true, but so did a Blues side that gave him few chances.
