he victory of good over evil is what the festival of Diwali symbolises, “and it is exactly the same thing, fighting for good over evil that brings me to work every day,” said Inspector David Glowssop, Counties Manukau South Area Commander at the Diwali celebration hosted by Counties Manukau Police at Manukau Police Station.

Manukau Police Station where the event was held didn’t stop the Police and members of the Corrections Department from enjoying the performances, along with masala chai and a simple but tasty vegetarian Indian lunch.

Some of the police officers were hard to recognise as they walked around in colourful Indian turbans.

As Venkat Raman, member of the South Asian Police Advisory Board and

editor of Indian Newslink newspaper said, this is a good example of police reaching out to communities, especially the diverse communities in Manukau.

And from the looks of it, the Police were having a great time saying wah wah (translated as `great job’ in Hindi) as they appreciated the dance performance and partook in the celebrations.

The high energy and entertaining Indian Bhangra dance performed by the uniformed police team was one of the highlights of the afternoon.

Fatal crash in Flat Bush One person is dead after coming off a motorbike in a crash in Flat Bush on Wednesday morning. Emergency services were notified at 5:48am of the crash on Stancombe Road, near Kestev Drive. Local diversions were in place along Chapel Road and Erica Road. The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

olice “forgot” more than a dozen AR15 rifle receivers on a Howick front lawn following the alleged execution of a search warrant, a shooting blog claims.

Mike Loder, a contributor to specialist forum Kiwi Gun Blog, claims Auckland Police left 15 AR15 rifles on a lawn and simply forgot them.

“This is the same weapon type believed to have been used in the recent American horror shooting,” he said.

Loder, who told the Times he has been campaigning for harsher penalties for armed offending for the last 25 years, said police executed a search warrant on a property of a licensed firearms dealer in Howick. “These tightly restricted firearms had been seized as a result,” he said.

“The IPCA has not returned our calls to confirm this.”

The Kiwi Gun Blog states that the goal of the blog is simple – “to keep the shooters of New Zealand up-to-date on the threats to their right to responsible firearm ownership. Then to provide them with the information and guidance to counter such attacks.”

A police spokesperson said a query lodged by Loder is being treated as an Official Information Act request.

“The NZ Police Media Centre is designed to service calls from recognised media outlets,” the

spokesman told the Times via email.

“As Mr Loder is not media, his query was referred to our OIA process, which is standard process for detailed information requests.”

It is not accurate to say police refused to answer his questions, the spokesperson said.

“Police are investigating a complaint that was received in 2016, relating to an incident that took place in December 2014,” said police.

“The matter is currently the subject of an employment investigation and as this is ongoing, Police are unable to comment further.”

“The dealer later discovered them and called the police – asking them to come back and collect them,” Loder said.

“Police then told him to drop them off at another person’s address.

“Police then later charged him with unlawfully supplying these same firearms to an unlicensed person.

“All charges were subsequently dismissed.”

Loder said the AR15 is a very modular platform. It can accept a vast variety of parts – like dressing a Barbie doll – with simple hand tools. But it needs the heavily restricted receiver to make this possible.

“This complete and registered part is what was forgotten. Resulting in the possibility that 15 rifles – similar to those just adopted by our military – could fall into the hands of gangs,” said Loder.

“For this reason, in the eyes of the law, the receiver is the rifle.”

Heimgartner notches up second place Andre Heimgartner and Devon Modell have put in an inspired drive in the wet to bring home second place in the final race of the 2017 Blancpain GT Series Asia Championship.

Heimgartner, who grew up in Dannemora, started the race, which commenced under safety car conditions due to the wet.

Tenth on the road when the first racing lap commenced, he dropped down to 12th in the #88 Craft Bamboo Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R, when he was held up by another spinning car.

From there, the 22-year-old went to work – passing car after car in exceptionally tricky conditions over the next half an hour to put the #88 in fifth position by the time he handed

over to co-driver Modell, with his efforts much-lauded by the series commentary team.

Modell then picked up where Heimgartner had left off, working his way up to 2nd position to see the pair stand on the second step of the podium today.

“That was a really good race, I am pretty stoked to stand on the second step of the Blancpain GT Series Asia podium in my debut with the series, with the team, at this track and in a GT3-spec car,” Heimgartner grinned.

“On the first lap we did get held up with someone spinning which saw us go almost to the back of the field. From there we had to fight back and that is what we did – it was fun passing cars, although by the

end of it I was a bit sick of passing, especially in those tricky conditions,” he laughed.

“The car today was a lot better than yesterday and it was great to have something that we could fight with. It is a credit to Craft Bamboo Racing and Devon put in a great drive there as well.

“It is safe to say this weekend has been a fantastic experience and I would love to have the opportunity to race again in this series and with Craft Bamboo Racing in the future,” he says.

“I can’t thank the team enough for calling me up to the drive this weekend and I am really pleased that we have been able to give them a strong result today.”

Heimgartner’s drive with

Craft Bamboo Racing this weekend came after their regular steerer Nick Foster was unavailable for the event after it was rescheduled from its original dates.

The Melbourne-based Kiwi brought home ninth in yesterday’s opening 60 lap race with Modell in wet conditions before the pair stood on the podium today.

Heimgartner will now fly back to his home base in Victoria, Australia, before travelling to the Gold Coast later in the week for the final round of the 2017 Carrera Cup Australia Championship.

In that title chase, he is currently second after winning the penultimate round at Mount Panorama last weekend.

Dr Lance O’Sullivan sets sights high ■■By Farida Master

T

alk about great expectations. Big things are expected of Dr Lance O’ Sullivan.

Described as a passionate public health campaigner, the New Zealander of the Year 2014 is poised to be the new leader of the Maori Party for 2020. Many in the know predict that he will resurrect the Maori Party after it was wiped out in this year’s General Election.

Dr O’ Sullivan has also been pipped to be a future Health Minister who will implement huge changes after the 2020 elections.

Could he even become Prime Minister at the next General Election?

Given his fierce passion to eradicate poverty and bring about a dramatic change in the health sector coupled with leadership skills, expertise, charisma and a huge media presence— all point towards the making of a great leader.

Not many are aware that the 45-year-old doctor from Kaitaia, who has collected plenty of awards including Champion of Public Health and Maori of the Year 2013, grew up in Highland Park.

Meeting the son of Howick at the historic Stockade Hill is an apt location to meet the influential doctor — known for a number of initiatives including setting up Northland’s full-time school based health clinic providing care to 2000 children across the regions; focussing on Pacific and Maori Health;

and founder of the iMoko Foundation, a digital healthcare programme that makes healthcare more accessible to new Zealanders.

The Northland doctor works 70-hours-a-week and looks in good form as he turns up in his cycling gear, having cycled from Panmure Station to Stockade Hill.

It’s almost 30 years since he visited the area he grew up in. Getting nostalgic as he looks at the panoramic view he says: “I went to the kindergarten across the road in Howick and studied at the Howick Primary and Howick Intermediate.”

Pointing to the area where Monterey Cinemas once stood, he remembers going to the movies with his mum at the old historic cinema that has moved location since.

“I went to Pakuranga College and got expelled,” he smiles.

He says “unharnessed genius” got him thrown out of college.

After being expelled from two colleges, it was a Maori Boarding School in the North Shore that changed the course of his life. It nurtured him and helped him follow his calling.

Growing up in Highland Park, he met his wife Tracy at the Long View Pub in Howick.

“We had our first baby at 21,” says the father of seven, who now regularly visits Auckland as he works hard at democratising healthcare by using technology to champion public health.

macy close to the person’s residence.

“And if there is a mother with a small child who finds it difficult to visit the pharmacy, the medicine can be delivered by Uber.

“It is like Uber in Healthcare... using health resources smarter,” he says.

Pro golfer Ryan Fox, from Beachlands, was less than happy with a spectator after his golf ball was apparently swiped on the par-4 eighth hole at the Italian Open on Friday.

Testing water pollution with ...er... fan worms ■■By Farida Master

A

n invitation to work with some of the country’s top research scientist is a huge honour for a Year 10 student of Howick College.

Now he has to wait for two years before he is old enough to accept the scholarship.

Ethan McCormick worked with the ubiquitous Mediterranean fan worm to investigate levels of water pollution in waterways. His findings reveal that though the marine worms have got a bad name, they are good indicators of bacteria in water.

The science project that won him a first place in the Environmental category and a best Year 10 Project Award at the NIWA Manukau Science Fair has also evoked the interest of scientists from University of Otago as well as Auckland University and the Auckland Council.

Ethan is thrilled that a handson Otago University Scholarship allows him to work in the lab with some of the leading scientific minds in the county.

“I am too young to go now so have to wait till I am in Year 12 or 13,” says the 15-year-old.

“Though fan worms are an invasive species, they are being

contained and not eradicated for the time being in New Zealand,” he says.

“New Zealand’s waters are currently being negatively impacted by pollution. I wondered what could be done to improve the situation.

“The Mediterranean fan worm is a filter feeding marine worm that arrived here in New Zealand in 2010. The worm is considered an invasive species as it competes for food with other native species and can spread rapidly, smothering

huge areas.”

Passionate about the environment, Ethan decided to study the ecological impact of the fan worm and how it could possibly be used for more accurate water quality monitoring of bacteria.

After close observation and going through a process that “may gross out the readers”, he found that the fan worm is able to filter out phosphates (nutrient type) and enterococci (a type of bacteria) from water.

“I also found that the fan

worm is an accurate bio-indicator of enteroccocci” “A bio indicator is something that gives information about its surrounding environment,” he explains.

“The fan worm accumulates a lot of bacteria from the surrounding water. This means the levels of bacteria in the worms is much higher than in the water and can possibly mean the worm can be used for more accurate water quality testing.”

Ethan is using this project to apply for the Silver Crest with the Royal Society.

“It has been great to have the support of Professor Gilliam Lewis, Professor Andrew Jeffs, scientists from Auckland Council and my science teacher Mr McSweeney,” he says.

The keen golfer says: “Scientist from the Cawthron Institute, (New Zealand’s largest independent science organisation that supports the environment and development within primary industries) find this information is useful to them in understanding the ecological impacts of the worm.

“I have also given these results to scientists at Auckland Council and Auckland University.”

Ardmore Water Treatment Plant opens its doors Watercare is hoping to see lots of local faces when the annual Open Day at Ardmore Water Treatment Plant takes place on 18 November.

“We are aware that we have a lot of neighbours and whilst we correspond with people from time to time, we’d love this opportunity to meet them face-toface and show what we dol,” says Watercare southern water treatment manager, Nolwenn Lagadec.

“Each tour guide is a member of our staff and they have plenty of great stories to tell, as well as lots of interesting facts and details about how the Ardmore Water Treatment plant treats Auckland’s drinking water to the highest standard.”

The Ardmore water treatment plant treats up to 350 million litres per day of water abstracted from four dams in the Hunua Ranges.

It is the largest water treatment plant in New Zealand, utilising 83 clarifiers and 30 filters, with water flowing under gravity from the Hunua Ranges, through the plant and into Auckland’s water supply system as far as the North Shore.

Brown leaves board Simeon Brown has officially resigned as a member of the Manurewa Local Board.

Brown handed in his resignation following last month’s central government elections where he was elected as the MP for Pakuranga.

In his letter of resignation, Brown said it has been a true privilege serving as a member of the Manurewa Local Board and serving the Manurewa community alongside his colleagues on the Local Board and from around Auckland Council.

“I am grateful for the support I have received from the Manurewa community and proud of what I have been able to achieve alongside my Local Board colleagues.

Jetts gym fundraiser comes from the heart Howick’s very own Jetts gym is doing its part for the hearts of Kiwi kids.

The team at Jetts has raised more than $2000 during September for Heart Kids NZ. Heart Kids is the only charity in the country that supports Kiwi children and their families affected by congenital heart disease.

“When I heard 12 babies are born with heart defects a week in New Zealand I wanted to do what I could and the people of Howick were great,” says Jetts Club manager Jared Kerr. “Heart Kids is a non-government funded organisation, and they need our help to help the children who need it.”

Local businesses rallied behind Jetts to donate vouchers, raffle giveaways, cakes for a bake sale and food for a fundraising barbeque and sausage sizzle.

The gym hosted an official fundraising day in Howick Village last month and Kerr says he was blown away with the generosity of the community.

“Jetts members and the local community all jumped on board to raise money and helped us more than double our original target of $1000,” he says.

Kerr says he looks forward to running the fundraiser again next year, and says they will set their sights even higher next time.

Design a Rashie To celebrate the new splash pad coming to Lloyd Elsmore Park, ANZ and Auckland Council are running a ‘Design a Rashie’ competition. All kindy and primary school aged children from Pakuranga can enter and the winning design will be made into a rash vest for the winner and their classmates.

Auckland Council Head of Active Recreation Rob McGee says, “Our ‘Design a Rashie’ competition is a fun way for us to get the local kids excited about what’s to come this summer. Entries will be judged on how the design represents summer fun, as well as the use of colour and creativity.” Entries close October 27, 2017.

Safer number plates Number plate thefts are continuing to be an issue. This Tuesday 24 October, Howick/Pakuranga Community Patrol, in conjunction with NZ Police, Countdown and Pakuranga Shopping Centre will hold a Safer Plates event. Motorists will have the opportunity to have their number plate screws changed to a more secure screw to make it harder for thieves to remove the plates.

Stolen plates are used in petrol station drive offs, burglaries and other offences. Howick/Pakuranga Community Patrol will collect a $5 donation. Head down to Countdown at Pakuranga Plaza on Tuesday October 24 between 10am and 2pm and look for the bright blue gazebo.

Eckford’s Farm homestead alive again T

here was a good turnout at the re-opening of the newly restored Eckford’s Farm homestead on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Howick Local Board members including David Collings, Sharon Stewart, Dick Quax, Katrina Bungard, Adele White, John Spiller and Peter Young were there to witness the live day and official re-opening of the four-roomed Eckford’s Farm Homestead, originally built in 1851 at Maraetai.

Chair of Transport committee of Auckland Council Mike Lee spoke about his connection to Howick, and did the ribbon-cutting along with president of the Howick & Districts Historical Society, Rob Mouncey and chair of Howick Local Board, Mr Collings.

“The homestead that started its life as the home of Thomas Eckford and his family on their 368 acre farm,

is a fine example of a farm homestead of the period and complements the mid late 1800s Fencible cottages, parsonage, church, schools, the grand Puhi Nui homestead and other buildings at Howick Historical Village,” said Mr Mouncey.

The Couldrey family bought the farm in 1877 and enlarged the original four-roomed cottage by adding verandas on three sides.

From 1888 to 1923, a small Post Office was added to the building to serve local families.

For performing this service, the Couldrey’s received a princely sum of 30 shillings a year. In 1911, the Couldrey’s sold the farm to JJ Craig, an Auckland merchant and ship owner.

The farm was then subdivided in 1916 and the house sold to Ian Strachan whose

son Graham the Society is deeply indebted to for donating the house to the Society in 1977, said Mr Mouncey.

“The journey to get the building to its village site was a challenging one as no doubt David Edwards, Alan La Roche and other Society members can recall.

“David and Alan had to lower the height of the building the night before by taking the corrugated iron roof off in high winds and rain, all in the dark. I am pretty sure that this would not pass today’s Health and Safety regulations. It was amazingly moved in one piece all the way from Maraetai even wending its way through Howick’s main Cooke and Picton Streets in heavy rain the following day,” he said.

She was just three-years-old when Isabelle Fox first put on her tap dancing shoes, and she hasn’t stopped dancing since.

Winning around 40 dance trophies a year is no mean feat, but for 15-year-old Isabelle it is what drives her to work hard on sassy moves with brisk jumps and rhythmic footwork at a highly competitive level.

Trained at the Raewyn Burgess School of Tap in Greenlane, Isabelle has won the prestigious Noel Burnett Tap Award at the Auckland Caledonian Dance Competition, held recently The Saint Kentigern College student competed with dancers from around New Zealand to win the award and $5000 prize money.

A roomful of trophies won at various dance competitions through the years, stand testimony to the long hours of hard work. She is saving the prize money so that she can compete in dance competitions overseas.

Apart from tap dancing, Isabelle studies various disciplines of dance that include ballroom, jazz, ballet, contemporary and hip hop at different dance schools.

Her dream job is to travel overseas and dance on a cruise ship.

“The competition is real tough,” says the young dancer who competed in Australia for a scholarship from the Ministry of Dance and won it two years in a row.

“Everyone is very versatile.

Sometimes it comes down to the right look for role— like the colour of your hair or how tall you are,” she says.

She loves tap dancing “because it is a very active dance style and you can perform it at different speed, ranging from slow to fast or medium”.

Her mother Natalie, who spends most of her time driving her daughter to different dance classes, says it’s aboout team work.

“Isabelle’s grandmother and I work together on her dance costumes,” says Natalie.

There is a special haber-

dashery room in the house where Natalie spends time altering outfits, adding bling to dance costumes and coordinating accessories for her daughter’s competitive dance performances.

“There are nine different styles of tap dancing at the Auckland Caledonian Dance competition and each of them has a different costume,” she says.

Their home in Mellons Bay is now being extended to include a dance room with proper flooring.

With an intensive dance programme seven days a week, Isabelle says she finishes most of her school work in class and occasionally stays up late at night to cope with it.

Devoted to dance, Isabelle has won an NZ Association of Modern Dance scholarship and is eligible for Jazz and Tap. “One has to score 97 per cent or higher to be eligible,” says the tap dancer who has won five years in a row at the Tauranga Champ of Champs is now nominated for the Tap Nationals in 2018.

new chess Grandmaster has emerged following the eighth Asian Seniors Chess Championships which have just concluded at the Waipuna Conference Centre.

International Master Mahmood Lodhi from Pakistan completed his final qualification for the title of Grandmaster and will become Pakistan’s first ever player to achieve this prestigious World Chess Federation title. He finished on 7 points (6 wins, 2 draws and only 1 loss).

Paul Spiller achieved a draw against him in round 1 and was the only New Zealand player to score any points against him.

The 65+ Veterans section was completely dominated by legendary Filipino Grandmaster Eugene Torre who scored a picket fence 9/9 against his opponents.

In second place with a silver medal on tiebreak, was local Howick-Pakuranga Chess Club member and FIDE Master Ewen Green who tied with Edmundo Legaspi (Bronze medal) of the Philippines on 6.5 points.

Both Bruce Watson and Ewen Green as well as Edmundo Legaspi all qualify for norms (or part qualifications) for the International Master title. Edmundo Legaspi also qualifies for the FIDE Master or FM title. The International Master title is the next step

MP Maggie Barry, whose fiance Grant Kerr competed in the Veterans 65+ category \, was a special guest at the prize giving ceremony on Sunday along with the department chief of the Nepalese Ministry of Sport, Mr Kul Bahadur Thapa.

The competitors from 11 countries including Nepal, Thailand, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Pakistan, Guam, PNG, Australia and New Zealand were entertained by a local kapa haka group before the prize giving ceremony.

very shade of pink was on display at Basalt Bar on Sunday morning for the Pink Ribbon Breakfast.

Hosted by Botany local Arishma Singh to raise funds for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, the breakfast saw 80 guests gather to drink Champaign and talk about breast cancer awareness.

Coast NZ Radio Host Lorna Subritsky shared her own story as a breast cancer survivor and encouraged all attendees to go for regular breast screenings.

“One in eight women gets diagnosed with breast cancer every single day in New Zealand,” she said.

“That’s 10 women in this room. So please, get checked.”

The event raised more than $2800 for the Breast Cancer Foundation,

exceeding Singh’s original goal of $2500.

Singh says she is overwhelmed with the support and participation from the local community, with many of the guests donating money on the day in addition to their $30 ticket price donation.

“The morning would not have been possible without those who purchased a ticket. I am over the moon about the money we raised this year,” she says.

Opposite of democracy is dictatorship

Our democratically-elected mayor and most councillors would rather have a race-based ward imposed on Auckland by government, than let the people decide.

It’s of concern that they have no faith in the system that put them there and has helped Western cultures advance ahead of so many others.

It’s important to remind people that the opposite system to democracy is dictatorship – and it was a dictatorial move that foisted the Super City on us. And that’s hardly been a success.

Meanwhile, the unelected and unaccountable Independent Maori Statutory Board (IMSB) is lobbying hard to be retained alongside a racebased ward, and why wouldn’t they?

Their very well-paid elite take millions of dollars from ratepayers every year, get the bureaucrats to do whatever they want (in the name of “partnership”), vote on key council committees, yet don’t answer to anyone. It’s time for the people to have their say.

I was confused about the news report in the NZ Herald dated September 3 describing Japan as a ‘pacifist country’.

About two years ago a person was apprehended for drilling holes in car petrol tanks in order to steal petrol. So far this person and dropped a bomb into Pearl Harbour bringing about its downfall.

Japan has since been re-writing its history books promoting itself as the ‘pacifist country’ and all the others being the aggressors.

It seems the NZ Herald is now helping the Japanese re-write their aggressive history into one of being the aggrieved pacifist country.

City bus stop no good Does Auckland Transport (AT) seriously expect/demand that elderly bus passengers trudge all the way up to 50 Customs Street, (bus stop 1420), with little or no protection from the weather, before they can catch the Howick & Eastern bus services 500/501 to Botany from Auckland City Centre?

If this is how AT encourages the use of public transport, it is no wonder it is an abysmal failure. I’ll stick with the car!

■ BY JANINE HICKMORE When the sun goes down and the nightlife begins, Hawaii’s Oahu Island offers great music in and around Waikiki and Honolulu seven days a week.

Many hotels have Hawaiian music and dancers every night in which guests and non-guests are welcome.

Outdoor festivals happen across the island at different times of the year.

We have experienced a contrast of music from rocking at the “Hard Rock Cafe” Waikiki, to the fabulous “Blue Note” located in the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort where one year we were lucky enough to catch the Manhattan Transfer playing over a candlelit dinner.

Normally, when we think of music associated with Hawaii, it is hula girls, ukulele and slack string guitar but you can be assured there is plenty more.

have now visited Oahu nine times since turning 21 (my 21st being my very first trip).

I have to say that this place makes me feel happy every time. For me, it’s the mix of sun, surf, shopping, an amazing atmosphere and the hustle and bustle of Waikiki.

Oahu isn’t all about Waikiki I know, but it’s usually the main place to stay for at least some of your trip, for the majority of people.

I’m very embarrassed to admit this, but on one trip to Waikiki, I never even made it to the beach, it was all about the shopping. I have since matured!

When you need a break from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, hiring a car and going right around the island is an amazing day out. There’s an endless number of places to stop for refreshments and, of course, there’s the north shore beaches.

Around west, east, central and north Oahu, it’s vastly different from Waikiki, great for understanding how and where the locals live, eat, shop etc. There’s a cracking Mexican place in the

historic town of Hale’iwa if you’re heading to the North Shore beaches, it’s called Cholo’s – try a prawn burrito.

One thing I make sure I do on my trips, is to hire a lounger on Waikiki Beach, and just watch the world go by. It’s so relaxing looking out to sea, and wandering down to the water when you get too hot.

If you have energy to burn, it’s an amazing view from the top of Diamond Head, so that’s well worth the walk up there – don’t forget your sunscreen and some cold water (although there’s a truck at the start (and end) of the walk that sells cold drinks).

Waikele Premium Outlets (in Waipahu) is worth a trip if you are in the market for Levi’s, handbags, Polo Ralph Lauren clothing, Adidas, Converse etc.

It takes about 30 minutes or so by car to get there, but there’s also some great shuttle services which will take you there and back at your choice of times.

I could go on and on about Hawaii being an excellent holiday destination, but I think it’s best that you find out for yourself!

First time In Hawaii

We also spent a day snorkelling at Hanauma Bay’s coral reef, which was teeming with sea life. This is a great place for amateur snorkelers.

Oahu is a safe haven for tourists and the night life, awesome. Cannot wait to return next year, but for a much longer stay, so as to explore the other islands of Hawaii.

Time for tasty tomatoes If you’re anything like us, you’ll be desperate to get your tomato seedlings into the soil! Planting tomatoes makes it feel as though summer really is on the way. We recommend planting tomato seedlings about 40cm apart and staking at the time of planting to minimise root damage.

Tomatoes love full sun so plant them in a protected, warm area.

They will grow rapidly so remember to water them regularly and feed with a tomato fertiliser such as TomA-Rite.

If you’re anything like us, you’ll be desperate to get your tomato seedlings into the soil!

Now is a great time to refresh the soil and plants in your pots.

Growing herbs is easy Fresh herbs are the easiest way to add flavour, aroma and colour to your favourite dishes and meals.

Not only are herbs great in culinary dishes, they also provide natural medicinal remedies, and are the source of many classic fragrances.

Most herbs are very easy to grow and do not require a lot of space, which make them the perfect plant for children and starter gardeners. Herbs can be grown in small pots on the windowsill, or in pots around the patio where they can be easily accessed from the kitchen. Herbs add beauty, colour and texture to the garden so include them in the flower or vegetable garden as well. Some herbs are also a fantastic natural deterrent to unwanted insects which is perfect for the organic gardener.

Planting

Most herbs require good drainage to encourage lush growth and generally prefer soil of a gravelly nature.

With the addition of compost you will be rewarded with a bounty of herbs to pick from. The great majority of herbs prefer sunshine, low humidity and evenly distributed rainfall. With regular watering and mulching you’ll prevent them from drying out.

Small leaved varieties generally come from the Mediterranean, so they thrive best in open sunny positions and protection from cold winds.

Aromatic herbs prefer to be grown in a more sheltered position.

Herbs produce better if they are regularly trimmed which will promote a bushier plant. Regular replacement of plants that have lost their vigour ensures that you have a full plant to pick from and can simultaneously discourage disease. Leafy herbs should

Herb olive oil ice cubes

Here is a handy cooking trick, from garden to table. This is a great way to enjoy your favourite herbs without letting them go to waste.

All you need is a big handful of your favourite herbs, olive oil and an ice cube tray.

Chop your herbs into medium sized pieces. Fill the ice cube tray with your chopped herbs. Pour the olive oil into each cube, leaving a little room at the top (they will expand when freezing) then place in the freezer overnight.

Pop out an ice cube and put it into your saucepan. Start cooking This is a great way to infuse recipes with fresh flavours long after the season is over.

ahlias are one of the best value garden plants for summer colour. Planted in spring, they will flower from December right through summer to late autumn.

Native to Mexico and first introduced into Europe in the 1600s, dahlias have been so extensively cross-bred over hundreds of years that the dahlia family now includes a large range of flower types, plant sizes and every colour imaginable.

Dahlias are sorted into main groups according to their flower shape. The most common types are the cactus dahlia, with a spiky appearance and decorative dahlias which include a range of forms from tight ball-shaped flowers through to more open forms called water lily dahlias. As well as these two, other common types include dwarf forms ideal for borders or potting, and single flowered forms.

Dahlias are frost tender and should not be planted out until all danger of frost has passed. This Labour Weekend should be fine.

They prefer a full sun location, but will tolerate some shade. Drainage is very important as the tubers do not like being water logged for any length of time. In high rainfall or wet areas they can easily be grown by using slightly raised beds to help with drainage.

Because our winters are relatively wet, tubers can be lost to rot if left in the ground over winter. It is best to dig them up each year in late autumn after the first frosts have knocked the leaves back. Lift them carefully and split any large clumps up into smaller ones. Be sure to keep some of the crown as a part of each section when splitting the clumps – it is from the crown that the new shoots develop in spring. Rinse the tubers off to clean them and, after drying, store them in a cool, airy place until replanting in spring.

edian residential property prices across New Zealand have increased by 1.2% year-on-year to $525,000 according to the latest data from the Real Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) – source of the most complete and accurate real estate data in New Zealand.

Nationally, excluding Auckland, median prices increased 5.7% year-on-year and Auckland median prices remained flat at $845,000. However, on a month-on-month basis, Auckland’s median price increased by 1.2% or by $10,000.

Contributing to the overall increase, six regions across the country experienced doubledigit median price increases in September year-on-year: ➤➤ Tasman (up 19.3% to $572,500) ➤➤ Hawke’s Bay (up 18.3% to $392,000) ➤➤ Gisborne (up 14.9% to $270,000 ➤➤ Northland (up 14.4% to $446,000) ➤➤ Wellington (up 10.6% to $531,000) ➤➤ Southland (up 10% to $220,000).

Only two regions experienced price decreases during September (compared to September 2016) – West Coast (down 15.6% to $208,500) and Canterbury (down 3.2% to $426,000).

Bindi Norwell, CEO at REINZ says: “Prices across the country increased in all but three

regions, evidence that the market continues to grow despite some challenging conditions – including the LVR restrictions and banks continuing to tighten lending conditions. Much of the increase has been driven by the buoyancy in the regions.”

Soggy start to spring impacts sales volumes

The number of properties sold during September fell 26.2% year-on-year (from 7,352 to 5,428) the lowest number of properties sold in the month of September for 6 years. Nationally, excluding Auckland, volumes decreased by 23.7% year-on-year.

Looking at the regional picture, again all 16 regions in the country experienced a decrease in the number of properties sold on a year-on-year basis. Regions with the biggest reduction in volumes were Tasman (down 37%), Southland (down 34%) and Auckland (down 31.5%).

Marlborough experienced the lowest number of sales since January 2012 (down 27.4%).

The month-on-month figures provide a more positive picture, however, with a number of regions experiencing an increase in the number of sales in comparison to August, and two regions experienced double-digit growth – Gisborne (up 25%) and Taranaki (up 11.4%). ➤➤Turn to page 23

REINZ HPI reaches new high The REINZ House Price Index for New Zealand increased 0.7% month-on-month to reach an all-time high of 2,699 during September, indicating that the ratio of sales prices when compared to CVs is at its highest point since the Index began.

The HPI also showed that all but three regions (Auckland, Taranaki & Canterbury) reached a new high during September indicating strong value growth across most of the country.

Regions with the highest growth year-on-year include Gisborne/ Hawke’s Bay (up 14.7% to 2,283), Manawatu-Wanganui (up 12.8% to 2,409), Wellington (up 11.8% to 2,377) and Northland (up 11.7% to 2,575).

In Auckland, which traditionally sees a large portion of sales sold by auction, only 422 (26.5%) of all properties sold in September were via auction – this is a decrease of 57% in comparison to September 2016.

No regions saw an increase year-on-year in the number of properties auctioned, however, month-on-month Gisborne, Manawatu-Wanganui, Otago, Southland, Taranaki and Waikato all saw an increase in auction numbers.

Price bands

Between September 2016 and September 2017, the number of homes sold fell in every price bracket. The number of properties sold for more than $1million fell by 29.9% from 1,020 to 715 to equal 13.2% of all dwellings sold.

The number of dwellings sold for less than $500,000 fell by 27.5% from 3,510 to 2,545 to equal 46.9% of all homes sold across the country.

Inventory

The number of properties avail-

able for sale nationally decreased by 2.6% (from 22,311 to 21,727) compared to 12 months ago, whereas the number of properties for sale in the Auckland region increased by 14% year-onyear (from 6,513 to 7,429).

Excluding Auckland, the number of properties for sale fell by 9.5% (from 15,798 to 14,298) highlighting the impact Auckland has on the overall picture.

In addition to Auckland, three other regions experienced an increase in listings – Waikato (8.2%), Wellington (2.8%) and Canterbury (3.6%). The regions with the biggest decrease in inventory were Gisborne (29%), Taranaki (24.3%) and ManawatuWanganui (22.7%).

Northland, Taranaki and West Coast have the lowest levels of inventory since records began 10 years ago.

“Overall, the New Zealand housing market continues to remain in a strong position.

While volumes are down, median house prices across the country have increased again. As the weather warms up we expect the market to pick up again,” concludes Norwell.

Company fined $6000 for poor records A construction company in Auckland has been penalised $6000 by the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) after a Labour Inspectorate investigation found breaches of record keeping.

The investigation found Jes Construction Limited, which has a sole director, Jialiang Hong, did not keep compliant wage, time, holiday, or leave records, or provide employment agreements.

“Every employee in New Zealand must be provided with an employment agreement, there is no excuse for failing to do so,” says Labour Inspectorate regional manager Jeanie Borsboom.

“Not only is it a legal requirement which is important to both the employer and employees, it provides a great foundation for an employment relationship.”

The median number of days to sell a property nationally increased by 3 days (from 31 to 34) when compared to September 2016.

Regionally, Taranaki saw the biggest increase in the number of days to sell (up 8 days to 31), followed by Waikato and Otago (both up 5 days to 35 and 30 respectively) and Auckland and Canterbury (both up 3 days to 37 and 34 respectively).

ast week at the National Aquatic Centre in Albany Howick Pakuranga Swimming Club showed that they are still one of the powerhouses of New Zealand swimming by coming third overall in the New Zealand Short Course Championships.

The senior squad, coached by Jana Korbasova, and the age group squad coached by Sheldon Kemp, combined for a total of 36 medals over the five day event.

The Short Course Nationals always turns up the heat for fast, entertaining racing and 2017 was nothing different.

The HPK team was smaller in numbers than previous years with the departure of some senior team members continuing their swimming in the American University system but really stepped up through the week long competition.

Standout performance would have to go to Pakuranga College student Tyron Henry who scored a load of age group medals and open finals.

The club’s two senior Para athletes, Tama Solouta and Tupou Neiufi once again picked up multiple medals across the week with senior National team member Daniel Hunter fresh from World Champs showcasing his leadership role around the pool for some younger age group athletes.

HPCC put up an imposing 279 after 50 overs, helped by big partnerships between Donovan Grobbelaar and Bill Walsh who put on 90 runs and David Winn and Sam Borland who added 75 - key to the large total.

University were always up for a challenge after losing two wickets in the first three overs to Matt McEean for only 5 runs and never really recovering.

and 106 put University into a position where the lower order batsmen were left with little option but to try and bat out 50 overs which they failed to do. Marie Raos Ray White Premier Reserves had a huge win over Birkenhead by 223 runs.

Howick New World HPCC Premier Women played two matches in its T20 competition. The second match against Parnell resulted in a good win after going down to Cornwall in the early match.

Maiden title for Howick netball H

owick College’s meteoric rise at the New Zealand Secondary School Champs has ended with their first national crown.

In what was their first appearance at the national netball event, the Auckland school beat Saint Kentigern 33-25 in an exciting grand final on Friday.

It was the second time the two teams had clashed at the Energy Events Centre in Rotorua with just three goals separating the two when they met in the tournament opener earlier in the week.

Howick also won that match but were forced to come from behind in the grand final with Saint Kentigern gaining the early break.

Goal attack Ashleigh Garner led from the front for Saint Kentigern – sinking eight from eight in the opening spell – as her side held an 8-6 advantage at the first break.

But momentum swung after the whistles for the second quarter with Howick netting five unanswered goals, their resurgence spurred on by goal keeper Nanise Waqaira who snaffled two intercepts in the spell.

Shooter Leehava Saverio also came into the game netting eight from nine in the quarter as Howick closed the gap to one goal by halftime.

Meanwhile, Manukura finished a successful week with third place after beating Epsom Girls’ Grammar School 37-30.

A strong second quarter performance, where they outscored Epsom 15-6, set the Palmerston North school up for the win. Centre Braxton Te Rini was a stand-out in the middle for Manukura picking up five intercepts and feeding her shooters well.

Manukura were also bookended by strong showings from goal keeper Antonia Heihei who snaffled five intercepts and six deflections while shooter Rochelle Fourie netted 30 goals for her side and picked up five valuable rebounds.
