and Agriculture (MAF) as well as truck drivers, drug dealers, drunk party revellers, school children and those involved in family violence. Talking about what drove her to contest the Botany by-election, she says the trigger was reading the newspaper announcing that there were just three guys—Mike Turinsky, Mark Johnson and Malcolm Page—contesting the seat left vacant after newly sworn-in member Lucy Schwaner resigned. ‘Where is the female candidate?’ she wanted to know. It was on the morning of December 22, the last day for filing in nominations, that she registered her interest. “I am a fixer. A doer,” she says. “I am straight up, honest and someone who likes to ask the hard questions. There are lot of things that need looking into and need answers. “Like the little, wriggly road from Chapel Road, (near St Paul’s in the Park Church) that narrows down drastically as it leads to the busy Ormiston Road. There have been a lot of accidents in the past. Why is nothing being done about it?” she questions. “Or all those cars parked just outside Bruce McLaren Retirement Village that cause traffic congestion. Most of the cars parked on the busy road belong to the residents of the retirement village so why was no parking space allocated in the premises when it was built?” While Mrs Patterson is quite green when it comes to local politics, she is confident that she has a mentor in good friend, Auckland councillor Sharon Stewart. “Though I only informed Sharon after I had filed my nomination, she has been very supportive and has been advising me. “She’s my master and I’m the apprentice. Even now whilst I am talking to the Times Sharon is helping me deliver the flyers in people’s mailboxes. She’s been around forever in local politics and has a very good idea of how things work.”

It didn’t take long for one of Julie Patterson’s election signs to be ripped off. “But it’s ok, I am told these things happen,” she says lightly, shrugging it off. The 2015 Nielsen Media Trends Mrs Patterson is fighting for a seat on the Howick Report shows community newspapers have more readers a Local Board, Botany subdivision in the forthcoming week in NZ than daily newspapers by-election. more than 10 years, she believes that women tend to communicate better, are more caring, bring an element of balance and negotiate well if there is a problem. Ailian in Mandarin means a lotus opening with the rays of the morning sun, she says. And living up to her name, she has gently touched lives of migrants over the last 20 years. As a Justice of Peace and a nurse, she has worked with many different cultures, she says. “I have often had conversations with people who visit the surgery on how we can better the transport system and other social issues, and a lot of them have liked my ideas and suggested that I should discuss them on a larger platform.” Mrs Su is familiar with broadcasting on the local Chinese radio as she has often been invited to talk to new migrants about many topics including the transportation system, road safety and various government services. “I have always wanted new migrants to have a better understanding of how to be a good New Zealander,” says the mother of two adult children. “I’ve also helped promote the cervical smear screening and mammogram screening programmes.” Mrs Su has recently moved from Somerville to Flat Bush and believes that to encourage people to move to new developments “we need to first fix the problems, like expanding the local shuttle bus services that link to major public transport hubs”. “We need to improve the car park facilities by the bus stops and train stations as well.” She also suggests that more fruit trees be planted at public reserves and parks to help provide shelter and make it more inviting for people to spend more time at the parks. There are plenty of other ideas she wants to discuss. “I’d like to work through the local board with schools and communities organisations to provide more after-school care and school holiday programmes for children to develop hobbies instead of sitting all day with their cell phones and computers,” she says. “It would help to develop healthy lifestyles for the generation next.” So why should people vote for her? “I have the experience and passion to serve the community,” she enthuses. “I love the community and want to contribute to it. I am very committed and I speak English, Mandarin and Cantonese—this will help me serve the diverse communities living in Botany more effectively.”

new year’s honours

Six recognised on honours list Six local figures were recognised in the New Year’s Honours list (which we have published online). Olympian and World Champion shot-putter Valerie Adams was made a Dame. Triathlete Cameron Brown, health services proponent Ranjna Patel and shareholders’ advocate Bruce Sheppard were appointed Officers of the New Zealand Order of Merit, while former hockey international Katie Glynn and table tennis champion Chunli Li were made Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit. The Times will publish a profile of each recipient and feature a short Q&A over the coming weeks. ➤➤Patel: It gives me the confidence to pursue other challenges

R

anjna Patel was awarded the ONZM for her service to health and the Indian community. Winner of many awards including the Equal Employment Opportunities Trust Diversity Awards, Walk the Talk Award, 2014, Hall of Fame for Women Entrepreneurs, 2014 and Queen’s Service Medal, New Year 2009, the 61-year-old Pakuranga resident has been the driving force behind the expansion of Nirvana Health Group, one of New Zealand’s largest Primary Health networks, which she and her husband started as a sole GP practice in 1977. The Nirvana Health Group now serves as an umbrella company for more than 30 medical clinics servicing 190,000 registered patients from predominantly lower socio-economic communities. Mrs Patel has chaired the South Asian Leadership Group and is a member of the Counties Manukau South Asian Police Advisory Board, Commissioner’s Ethnic Focus Forum, the Middlemore Foundation Board, Kootuitui ki Papakura Trust, Global Women and Co.OfWomen. She has taken an active role in early intervention for family violence prevention, working closely with New Zealand Police on a unique project called Ghandi Nivas, which offers counselling and temporary accommodation for family violence perpetrators. She has held ministerial appointments to the national Advisory Council on the Employment of Women and the Lottery Auckland Distribution Committee. Mrs Patel is a trustee of International Swaminarayan Satsang Organisation (ISSO) and ISSO Seva, which provides programmes for seniors, youth and the community. ➤➤Q. Who was the first person you told about receiving this honour and why them? A. I was quite surprised when I

received the letter in September and didn’t tell anyone. My husband saw the letter and was absolutely delighted and happy for me. After I accepted, it was hard to keep the secret, but we decided not to tell anyone. ➤➤Q. What does the ONZM mean to you? A. To me personally, it is an acknowledgment for the work I do but it is shared with all the people at Nirvana Health Group and the many communities I work with; in particular the amazing people involved with Gandhi Nivas - the Sahaayta team, New Zealand Police and Total Healthcare. ➤➤Q. Does receiving this award change anything for you, does it push you to strive for more? A. Nothing changes on a dayto-day basis. To me the award has shown me I have been very privileged in my life to be able

to serve and accomplish many different things at work, for women empowerment, for family violence and yes, it will give me the confidence to pursue other challenges. ➤➤Q. How did you celebrate the announcement? A. We celebrated as a family for breakfast and then at the temple in the evening with about 800 people. Seeing someone in the community get an award makes everyone proud. ➤➤Q. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received and how did you take it on board? A. In business, my husband said, take care of the patient and the business will look after itself. With the patient at the centre of all our thinking, the business has taken care of itself. And what I have learned is values should be the core of everything you do.

ameron Brown was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to triathlon. He has been involved in triathlon for 30 years and has been competing professionally for 26 years. The 44-year-old, who has lived in Bucklands Beach for most of his life and now resides in Dannemora, has competed in the Ironman discipline and has finished on the podium at numerous Ironman World Championships, at Ironman competitions in New Zealand and throughout Australasia, and at European Championships. Last year he extended his world record as the oldest winner of any Ironman race and also became the first professional man in the world to win the same Ironman race on 12 occasions. In 2014, he became the official ambassador for Ironman in the Asia-Pacific region and he is also an ambassador for Melanoma New Zealand which, in partnership with Ironman New Zealand, raises awareness for sun safety and the importance of regular skin checks. Brown was also the ambassador of Breath for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) for five years and in 2016 became the Weet-Bix TRYathlon ambassador. ➤➤Q: Who was the first person you told about receiving this

honour and why them? A: My wife Jenny but she already knew as she had been organising it with Triathlon New Zealand while I was overseas racing. ➤➤Q: What does the ONZM mean to you? A: It’s a huge honour to receive the award and was totally unexpected, I’ve been in the sport now since I was 14 years of age and I still love it. ➤➤Q: Does receiving this award change anything for you, does it push you to strive for more? A: All I want to do is continue to just enjoy the sport of triathlon and hopefully inspire a new generation to start up and compete. ➤➤Q: How did you celebrate the announcement? A: Nothing yet but I will in April when I will officially receive the award so a few more months to wait. ➤➤Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received and how did you follow it/take it on board? A: Just to have fun and enjoy what you do, if you don’t then you won’t last long. I have seen the world doing triathlons and there are still a few more places to visit so I need to keep going. My favourite quote is from a famous US runner (Steve Prefontaine): “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift”. ➤➤Turn to page 5

ruce Sheppard was awarded the ONZM for his services to business. Mr Sheppard is a partner at Gilligan Sheppard Accountants which he formed in 1985. A resident of Bucklands Beach for the last 30 years, he’s the founder of the New Zealand Shareholders’ Association. He was chairman of the Association until 2011, during which time it grew from an initial membership of 100 to over 1000 with six branches throughout New Zealand. He advocated for the Association to develop financial literacy as a key objective, including the development of education courses, particularly for the elderly. He led the campaign for financial market reform and accountability, mainly the Companies and Securities Act and the right to take an action on behalf of investors. Mr Sheppard is a shareholder and director himself, having been involved in a number of new and often innovative ventures including Argus Fire Protection Limited and Connexionz Ltd.

➤ Q. Who was the first person you told about receiving this honour and why? A. First people to know were my family as such an honour directly affects them too. ➤ Q. What does the ONZM mean to you? A. The recognition is valued because it is a recognition of the New Zealand Shareholders Association which I founded and its continuing valuable contribution to business and capital market function. It is nice to be recognised for doing something that others honour as being useful. ➤ Q. Does receiving this award push you to strive for more?

A. I am no longer involved in the NZSA but I still actively fight entrenched entitlement. I still challenge the establishment when it behaves from a sense of entitlement. I do so now as a litigation funder funding commercial cases including cases against directors and auditors that believe they are big enough and competent enough to be beyond challenge. So the honour doesn’t change what I do much. It may however change how I do things and affect how successful I might be at. ➤ Q. How did you celebrate the announcement? A. The dust is still settling so to-date no special thing has been thought about to celebrate. ➤ Q. What is the best piece of advice you have received or taken on board? A. Well, that is a hard one and I guess we are all a collection of every experience...so perhaps the best is what I return as my advice to others. Have a moral compass, understand your values and beliefs and associate with only those that share the most important of those. Translated... it reads, only work for or with people you admire and trust in or on a task that you are passionate about and that you think is useful.

Building on 2016’s progress With Jami-Lee Ross

manufacturing. New Zealand is also experiencing our biggest building boom – in the past five years, annual residential building consents have more than doubled. In Auckland, they have almost tripled. I’m particularly pleased to see that paid parental leave was lifted in 2016 to 18 weeks for families, and achievement rates in schools continue to grow well. Locally, it was great to see progress made on projects I’ve championed over the years, like the Uxbridge Art Centre and the Reeves Road flyover. While the recent Kaikoura

earthquakes have had a major impact on affected families and businesses, they are not expected to disrupt the overall momentum of the economy. However, they do highlight the importance of using the good times to prepare so New Zealanders can be supported through challenging times. Budget 2017 will be a good opportunity to fully assess the progress we have made in the last year and look at how best to support New Zealanders throughout 2017. Good progress has been made in education, health care, and developing a thriving economy. I would like to thank you all for your support. If I am able to help in any way, if you require any advice or assistance, my Botany Road office is now open again for the year. We look forward to helping you where we can. Otherwise, I wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2017. Jami-Lee Ross Member of Parliament for Botany

CRIME

Juveniles arrested ■ BY SCOTT YEOMAN scott@times.co.nz

T

hree people, two of them juveniles, have been arrested and charged with a string of aggravated robberies at service stations in Pakuranga last month. Four service stations – three of them on Pakuranga Road and one on Reeves Road – were robbed within four days of each other in December. Three stolen cars were used in the aggravated robberies and were taken from Howick and Half Moon Bay and were later dumped in Bucklands Beach and

Mellons Bay at similar locations in close proximity to each other. All the offences occurred in the early hours of the morning at 24 hour service stations – BP on Pakuranga Road (December 5), Caltex on Pakuranga Road (December 6), Gull on Reeves Road (December 8), and Z Energy on Pakuranga Road (December 8). Cigarettes and cash were targeted. Following an investigation by the Counties Manukau Police Major Crime Team, suspects were identified and three search warrants were executed on December 19 in Bucklands Beach and Manurewa, Detective

Sergeant Rob Hunkin told the Times. Three people were arrested and were later charged with all four aggravated robberies and in relation to three stolen vehicles used in the robberies, he said. Two of the offenders are juveniles and the third is a 19-year-old male from Bucklands Beach. Two of them have been remanded in custody and one was released subject to bail conditions. Meanwhile, two other people were arrested and charged over unrelated offending detected during the police investigation.

I would like to wish Times readers a very Happy New Year. I hope you have all enjoyed the festive period with family, friends and loved ones. I’d also like to thank our shift workers and emergency services who work tirelessly through the festive period to keep New Zealanders safe. We’ve got a big year ahead. Later this month the Nationalled Government will hold our first Caucus meeting of 2017 to plan the upcoming year. This is the time for us to reflect on our progress in 2016 and how New Zealanders want to see their country develop through the coming year. Some of the highlights of 2016 include the economy continuing to strengthen under the Government’s programme of consistent economic and fiscal management. Around 250,000 extra jobs have been created over the past three years and unemployment is falling. We are seeing strong growth in sectors such as tourism, ICT, construction, and high-tech

Childbirth education

Are you pregnant and due this April? Starting February 16, Auckland East Parents Centres seven-week childbirth education course is the perfect opportunity to make sure you are prepared for your April due date. The Childbirth Education Package also includes a six-hour post-natal course (run over four sessions), a membership to Parents Centre and you’ll also be put in a coffee group full of mums with similar due dates, with social events included. Places limited, book now: http:// aucklandeastparents.org.nz/ product/childbirth-educationpackage/ This is a free community noticeboard for non-profit groups. Please email notices to bot@times.co.nz. While every effort is made to run the notices, volume and space restrictions may mean events may not run. Where publication of a notice is time-critical, groups should consider paying for a classified advertisement to ensure placement.

Disposal

Treecycle your Christmas tree Aucklanders are being asked to dispose of their Christmas trees responsibly following a spate of illegal dumping across the region. In the last week there have been more than 30 incidents of illegally dumped trees including one hoisted into the lower branches of a much larger tree. “If you took the time to choose, buy and decorate a real Christmas tree then please take the time to dispose of it properly,” says Ian Stupple, Auckland Council general manager waste

solutions. Illegal dumping costs Auckland ratepayers more than $1 million annually.

➤➤Some Christmas tree farms accept trees purchased from anywhere, for free, to use for mulch or compost.

Christmas tree disposal advice

➤➤If you’re using a Christmas tree collection service, check that they collect from inside your property (not the kerbside) and if they will put the tree to good use, such as for mulch or compost.

Auckland Council does not collect people’s Christmas trees, so consider the following options for convenient and sustainable disposal of your tree: ➤➤If you have a private garden bag or bin collection, check if they accept Christmas trees.

➤➤You can take Christmas trees to some transfer stations for a fee. Make sure you check opening hours.

tragedy

Confirmed: Smoke alarm woke girl up ➤➤From page 1 Dr Arif Saeid, community services manager, Refugees as SurvivorsNew Zealand, who works with Mr Thanabalasingham, put to rest speculation that there was not a functional smoke alarm in the house. “Kailesh’s 11-year-old daughter Krishah, who escaped unhurt, told her aunt that she woke up from her sleep on that fateful morning because she heard the smoke alarm,” says Mr Saeid, saddened by the tragic course of events. “Both she and her grandfather were sleeping on the ground floor bedroom which is why they could run out of the door,” he reasons. Mr Saeid, who has been associated with the Refugees as Survivors-NZ for 17 years, says Mr Thanabalasingham was available 24/7 for any refugee who needed assistance. “Even if it someone contacted him on the weekend, he wouldn’t think twice about helping them out. And it wasn’t only Sri Lankans, he was there for refugees of all nationalities,” he says. According to Mr Saeid, Mr Thanabalasingham’s dad has returned to Canada along with his relatives who flew in from Canada for the funeral service on January 5. Hundreds of mourners packed the chapel at the Manukau Memorial Gardens, with many spilling outside.

Dr Arif Saeid says his colleague Kailesh Thanabalasingham is still in an induced coma. Photo supplied

“But Kailesh’s two sisters have stayed back to look after their brother who is still in an induced coma and his daughter,” he says. “There’s been a lot of smoke inhalation which has affected Kailesh’s lungs. He only opened his eyes once since he has been admitted but couldn’t talk because of the tubes. “We are not aware if he knows he has lost his five-year-old son, wife and his mother-in-law in the tragedy.” Five-year-old Bareth Kaileshan, his mother Bhamini Theiventhiran, 39, and grandmother Umadhevi Theiventhiran, 66, all died in the fire.

e’s created artwork for the NBA’s Chicago Bulls, been commissioned by the United Nations and designed campaigns for internationallyrenowned brands. Now, graphic designer Jeremy Kyle is adding another success to his list of artistic achievements on the world stage. He’s just been awarded one of the top 10 international advertising and branding projects of 2016 by online marketing giant Adage for his collaboration with New York Times design department T-Brand Studios. The compelling interactive project, Roots: A Cultural Force That Changed the Nation, was designed to promote the History Channel’s 2016 remake of the 1977 television mini-series Roots. Based on the life of an AfricanAmerican teenager brought into slavery and his family history, the show was watched by more than half of Americans who owned

televisions when it first aired. Today, the lasting impact of the mini-series is still evident in American art, culture and society. In their commentary on the award-winning project, Adage said: “The clear and concise writing and beautiful illustrations combined with supplementary audio clips and articles makes this easily digestible, yet deep enough for readers looking to further explore the topic”. It’s these beautiful illustrations that Jeremy was responsible for creating. Extensive research, art direction and an ongoing conversation with T-Brand Studios senior photo editor Kathryn Roach helped along the way, but it was a hip-hop playlist which proved to be his greatest source of visual inspiration. “When I’m getting into the feel or mood within each of my works, I normally envelope myself in music that’s connected to the subjects I’m visually communicating,” Jeremy said. “In this case, it was a lot of

hip-hop - in particular Kendrick Lamar for the final illustration.” Given that other winning collaborations included the likes of The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian and Amazon, it’s no surprise the 26-year-old said it was a humbling feeling to discover his project was listed among them – and he’s quick to credit his collaborators for that. “T-Brand Studios did an amazing job pulling all the visual and textual elements together into a beautiful, elaborate and unified project,” he said. The praise is mutual – as far as T-Brand Studios is concerned. “We were dealing with an enormous time difference and our timeline was rather tight [but] Jeremy jumped in, feet first and hit the ground running,” said Ms Roach. “He was a true partner, bringing our vision to life and creating beautiful illustrations which exceeded our and our client’s expectations... We were so excited to work with [him] on this project.”

The battle is not over ■■By Gayleen Mackereth This may be the last time you and your family can enjoy the view from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve unless Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association (HRRA) succeed in its campaign to save these views in perpetuity. We are inviting all our friends, supporters, visitors and everyone to enjoy the view and have a picnic on Stockade Hill from 3pm onwards on Auckland Anniversary Day, the 30th of this month. Entries to the Stockade Hill Photo competition are still open. Do join in, your photo could become an heirloom if

developers get their way. Good prizes to be won. Entries to HRRA PO Box 38-370 Howick. Must be unaltered and in a photo print of any size. The High Court battle is not over yet but we need the support of all Times readers to donate to the cause to pay our legal bill. This campaign urgently needs more donations of money. Due to the extremely generous donations of B Hedge, this week’s total is $26,320. B Hedge has repeatedly heeded the call to help us. Even if you have already contributed, and are able to, please spare just a little more to help.

Remember the High Court case is just the beginning of our fight, all the High Court justice has to decide is whether the Independent Hearings Panel justly declared the area opposite Stockade Hill suitable for multi-storey apartments or not. The judge does not have to take the views into consideration. If we win, we will only then be permitted to take our case to the Environment Court where the real issues can be argued. This will require considerably more funds. The battle is by no means over! Gayleen Mackereth is the chair of the HRRA

down to earth and practical. “For example, we have extensive knowledge and expertise in both Xero and Bank Link accounting systems, but we won’t sell in something unnecessarily complex for a small business, nor will we leave a larger business wanting.

“We avoid using accounting jargon and are motivated to take the ‘fear factor’ out of accounting and financial matters.” So, Pat’s advice to anyone worrying about their tax situation is to get in touch. “Don’t worry about anything – we’re trained to sort it out. The key thing is to contact us sooner rather than later. ” Pat also has a call to action for the well-established businesses with existing Accountant relationships. He urges you not to be complacent – now is a great time to review the work you are paying for and your level of satisfaction. “It’s sometimes easier to stick with what you know rather than make the effort to switch, but this might not be doing your business any favours. “You need to be absolutely sure that you are getting the best service possible, and, if not, make a change before the end of the tax year.” Pat Callinan Accounting Ltd 22 Picton Street, Howick Phone 533-8420 www.patcallinan.co.nz Email: karenh@patcallinan.co.nz

KEEP UP WITH THE TIMES

There have been a number of newspapers articles of late regarding people of all age groups getting tired of being an employee tied to the wage/ salary scenario and instead are considering setting up their own business. In the present era of changing technology and current skills becoming obsolete, that may not be a bad idea for those who can cope with change. However before taking such a step it is wise to consider the pitfalls and the opportunities before stepping out as your own boss. There are many agencies in the community and business world available to offer you advice and help. One of the first to approach could probably be Work and Income (WINZ). They have information on hand which can help you decide whether running your own business would be right for you. Not everyone can cope with the myriad of tasks required. Make sure that you take time to think through the risks and benefits of starting your own business, and discussing these in depth with your immediate family. Your local Citizens Advice Bureau can help you to find a class or workshop on starting a business, which would give you the benefit of discussing your ideas with like-minded students. Assuming that you already know what services or products your prospective business will provide, the next step would be to ensure that you have all the legal obligations covered. For example, the structure of the business be it sole trader, partnership, or a company. There are organisations

available to help you to make sure that you have everything in place from day one. The Government business website has information about the legal aspects, or you can call direct and speak to a business advisor or contact a similar advisor at Inland Revenue to discuss your tax obligations. There are also local organisations, which help people starting up their own business such as the Chamber of Commerce or the Economic Development agencies web site. This is just a brief summary of what is available to help your

start up. Much more detailed information is available at your local Citizens Advice Bureau. We have comprehensive work sheets covering these topics, including financial help which could be available in certain circumstances, and our skilled volunteers will be happy to discuss with you any further information you may require. Contact your local bureau for further information on these or any other matters for which you may require help, support or advice. Botany Citizens Advice Bureau, Rear Food Court Entrance, Botany Town Centre, phone 2715382. Self-defence workshop visits the coast The Women’s Street Smart self-defence workshop will be coming to Beachlands this March, offering a free weekend workshop for females ages 13 and older. The hands-on workshop, held March 18-19 at the Te Puru Community Centre’s downstairs studio, will focus on teaching females how to deal with the most common types of physical attacks, building up to rape defence and scenario drills. Lead instructor Charlie Riley said: “The workshop can be

both physically and mentally challenging to some, and quickly pulls people out of their comfort zone but at the end of it, the women come away empowered and infused with self-defence techniques, and are more knowledgeable regarding their personal safety.” Mr Riley has two free weekly classes running in Maraetai and Auckland City. To get registered visit www. selfdefencecourses.co.nz or contact Mr Riley on 027 368 9245.

ast year’s total new vehicle sales were the highest on record with 146,753 registrations, an impressive 9.5 per cent increase on 2015. Overall, the passenger and SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) market for 2016, excluding light commercials, was the strongest ever with 102,514 registrations. It broke a longstanding record dating back to 1973 when 97,346 passenger vehicles were sold.

“The 2016 record year marked a continued shift in buyer preference and market dynamics with, for the first time in New Zealand history, more SUVs being sold than passenger vehicles,” said David Crawford, the Motor Industry Association’s chief executive officer. “SUVs accounted for 36 per cent of the market (52,913 vehicles) compared to 35 per cent for all other passenger vehicles (51,552) and 29 per cent for commercial vehicles.” SUV sales are broken down

into four segments: small, medium, large and luxury. Medium was the top segment for the year with 21,473 units, for a 15 per cent share of total new vehicle sales. SUVs’ increasing popularity is due to their car-like driving characteristics, comfort, practicality, extremely versatile load-carrying ability, and an elevated seating position that offers good visibility. Diesel, petrol, hybrid and plug-in electric power plants are on offer, along with twoand four-wheel-drive.

The elegant Renault Koleos has so much more than the average SUV. Loads of interior space including class leading rear leg room, heated front seats, a quick response touch screen with multimedia premium audio system are just the beginning. And from just $44,990.

hinese New Year’s Eve is a day for family reunions. Celebrating it a little in advance before the locals get busy with family commitments was the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple that hosted the 2017 Annual Reunion Dinner on Saturday at Stancombe Road, Flat Bush. There was a celebratory air

as around 1000 guests and 450 volunteers gathered in the beautiful courtyard of the Buddhist temple to partake in the festivities. The evening started with a prayer and was followed by a sumptuous vegetarian meal and around 30 performances that included a range of Chinese,

Korean and Mongolian folk dances. From western classical music to youth workers at the temple putting up a spectacular show, the reunion dinner was a visual feast that welcomed not only the Chinese New Year on January 28 — but also the multicultural community at large.

he latest monthly QV House Price Index shows that nationwide residential property values for December increased 12.5 per cent over the past year. Values rose by 1.3 per cent over the past three months and are

now 51.5 per cent above the previous market peak of late 2007. When adjusted for inflation the nationwide annual increase drops slightly to 12.2 per cent and values are now 28.5 per cent above the 2007 peak. The average value nationwide is $627,905. The Auckland market has increased 12.2 per cent year-onyear which is the slowest rate since January 2015. Home values in the SuperCity rose by 1.5 per cent over the past three months and are now 91.6 per cent higher than the previous peak of 2007. When adjusted for inflation, values rose 11.9 per cent over the past year and are 62.4 per cent above the 2007 peak. The average value for the Auckland Region is $1,047,179. QV National Spokesperson Andrea Rush said: “December saw a continuation of the trend of a slowing rate of value growth, activity and demand. “This trend has been seen in many of the main centres since the introduction of the LVRs, which require a minimum 40 per cent deposit for investment properties,” she said. “This coupled with the annual Christmas holiday period slowdown has led to a decrease in values in some parts of Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch since November. “However, in Wellington values

continue to rise faster than in Auckland but at a slightly slower rate than prior to the LVRs being introduced. “While in Dunedin there has so far been no evident slowing in the housing market because of the new LVRs and value levels continue to increase and sales activity has remained strong throughout the Christmas period. “This is likely to be due to the fact the Dunedin housing market offers a much lower entry level and price point than the other main centres. Thus it’s easier for investors to find a 40 per cent deposit to purchase there and investors have remained active there. “A similar trend of plateauing/ decreasing values was seen in the Auckland market over the summer period last year following the introduction of the (30 per cent) LVRs for the SuperCity region only. “In 2016, the Auckland market then picked up in March, usually the busiest month of the year, and it’s possible we may see this happen again. “However, if interest rates continue to rise during 2017 this may further reduce demand from investors and lead to a longer period of lower value growth. “But any slow-down will be balanced by the fact the market is still being driven by

strong net migration, relatively low interest rates and a lack of supply compared to the demand, particularly in Auckland.”

Auckland

Home values across the Auckland region overall have decreased slightly over the last month dropping by 0.4 per cent as the impact of the new LVR restrictions take effect on the market. Between November and December there has been a decrease in values in parts of the North Shore, Waitakere, Manukau and also in the former Auckland City Council eastern and southern suburbs. Meanwhile, the Rodney District has seen the strongest growth over the past year, rising 14 per cent year-onyear and 3.8 per cent over the past three months. QV Auckland general manager, Jan O’Donoghue said: “Activity and demand in the Auckland residential property market has continued to slow during December as people appear to have decided to wait until after Christmas to enter the market. “This comes on top of the slowing in the market brought on by the introduction of the new LVR changes in the last quarter of the year which has led to price drops in some sectors of the market. “With interest rates set to rise further during 2017, it

The rate of growth in Hamilton home values is considerably slower than it was earlier in the year with values rising 20.4 per cent in the year since December 2015, but rising just 1.1 per cent in the final quarter of the 2016. Over the past month there has been a decrease in values in suburbs in Hamilton North East, South West and South East. Values in the city are now 48 per cent above the previous peak of 2007 and the average value is now $534,860. QV General Manager, Richard Allen said: “During December the Hamilton City market became one of two different tiers with properties over $550,000 continuing to attract buyers, but properties under $550,000 proving much less popular.

Exterior Cleaning Experts Building Cleaning / House Washing / Roof Washing and Treatments / Gutter Cleans / Prepaint Cleaning / Fence, Walls, Deck and Driveway Cleaning In 2016, the Auckland market then picked up in March, usually the busiest month of the year, and it’s possible we may see this happen again. “This is because there are less buyers competing for properties at the lower end of the market, now that many investors have left the market following the new LVR rules being introduced. “Good prices continue to be achieved in Ngaruawahia. Hauraki Plains’ towns such as Paeroa and Ngatea, are popular with Aucklanders due to lower prices and their proximity to Auckland, yet still offering entry level properties for under $300,000.”

Tauranga

The Tauranga market continues to rise, with home values in Tauranga City up by 24 per cent year-on-year and 4.3 per cent over the past three months. The average value in the city is now $672,197. Western Bay of Plenty home values rose 23.0 per cent over the past year but decreased by 0.6 per cent in the final quarter of the year. The average

value in the district is now $571,520. QV homevalue Tauranga, Registered Valuer, David Hume said: “We have seen a strong start to the year in the Tauranga housing market following on from good growth throughout 2016. “The announcement and immediate implementation of the new nationwide LVR restrictions in July saw a cooling off in the Tauranga market especially for investment properties toward the end of the year, although agents are reporting improved interest and sales volumes in recent months. “Western Bay of Plenty saw good growth in 2016 as it represented better ‘value for money’ in comparison to Tauranga however value growth is slowing there now due to fewer investors being active in the market.” “Rents have continued to increase throughout

2016, with an average three bedroom house now renting for $100 more than it did two years ago. “The prestige market has shown good growth over the last six months with a number of sales in excess of $1.5 million, on the back of a strong stable economy and cashed up Auckland buyers looking for a lifestyle change.”

In the North Island, the Kaipara District is one of the stand-out performers with values up 27.8 per cent year-on-year and 8.0 per cent over the last quarter of the year as buyers continue to look north of Auckland for more affordable property. The Hauraki District is also up by 30.0 per cent year-onyear and 8.8 per cent over the past three months, due to movers and investors looking south of Auckland for more affordable property.

appears some investors are choosing not to buy more property as they have lower expectations of potential capital gains during 2017. “However, properties with sub-division potential (under the new Unitary Plan) are still selling well and achieving record prices. “This includes properties in areas that are close to up and coming town centres and have good transport links, in suburbs such as Mt Wellington and New Lynn. “Units that don’t have sub-division potential are less popular because there is low expectation of achieving capital gains.”

Family united in new kitchen for Mum For 44 years, Colleen McLeod washed the dishes by hand. But with the passing of Colleen’s husband last year, it was time for some changes around the Te Atatu Peninsula family home, says daughter Tanya McLeod.

After sustaining the wear and tear of raising a big family, one West Auckland kitchen was in need of a total makeover. And thanks to Jag Kitchens, it now has a new lease of life.

Importantly, the experience was top-notch. “Jag has been extremely great to deal with, they’re very user friendly and put their client’s needs first,” says Tanya.

“We had never done the kitchen, never had a dishwasher. If Mum was going to continue living at the house, we would need a new kitchen.”

“And they managed to deliver a kitchen that everyone was happy with!”

Through a recommendation, Tanya discovered Jag Kitchens in Botany’s Danske Mobler Home Centre. “A friend of mine had a kitchen put in last year by Jag and I was really impressed with the quality, design, how good they were to deal with and, of course, cost.” Meeting Jag Kitchens designer Megan Dyer, the McLeods talked about their vision and requirements for the space. “Megan accommodated us really well. She considered everything Mum wanted and listened to her,” says Tanya. Colleen wanted a breakfast bar and double door fridge which proved tricky in a long kitchen with a lot of windows and not a lot of wall space, says Tanya. “We couldn’t figure out the placement but Megan came up with a design that worked and we were happy with it.”

equipped for such family occasions, the mother of five and grandmother of 10 will hopefully be spending more time with her family and less time washing up.

Colleen McLeod (left) with Megan Dyer in the newly designed kitchen.

Megan says removing the wall which divided the dining area and kitchen made a huge impact. “It’s made the area more spacious and sunnier than it used to be.” With less corners to deal with, the cabinetry lined up nicely together with all the other necessary components, she added. “We also customised the height for the microwave so she wouldn’t have to bend down or reach up to take plates in and out of the microwave,” says Megan. The result is a far cry from the former painted wooden kitchen with its textured ceiling and

stainless steel bench. A granite benchtop in angola black sparkles alongside white gloss cabinetry and an unusual tiled splashback creates dimension. “It was a lovely touch and I’m really stoked they went with the hexagonal tiles which have more depth and character than the traditional subway tiles,” says Megan. Extending from the kitchen, the laundry area has also been

Tanya says the finished product is stunning. “Everyone who comes in says ‘this is so nice – it’s really got the wow factor’. It’s changed the house completely.” Hosting Thanksgiving was a breeze for Colleen thanks to the openness of the kitchen, says Tanya. With a kitchen so well-

ne of the favourite events on Clevedon’s calendar, the annual Charity Polo Day, a collaboration between the Auckland Polo Club and the Clevedon Volunteer Fire brigade, will return to the renowned Fisher Polo Field on Sunday, January 29. The Tiger Building Family Polo Charity Day showcases a traditional Kiwi polo experience. A relaxed day out for everyone with all the fun of an authentic family day in the country, a sausage sizzle, auction, raffle, fire safety demonstrations and three games of competitive polo. This is the sixth year Clevedon’s Auckland Polo Club has hosted the popular charity event with proceeds raised going to support the tremendous volunteer work the 26-strong Clevedon Volunteer Fire Brigade does. “The Polo charity day is a great Clevedon community event made possible by the Auckland Polo Club,” says Mike Kelly, Station Officer at the Clevedon Volunteer Fire Brigade. “Proceeds from this day have made such a positive impact to financially contributing to our local brigade and assist with our volunteer work.” Twenty-eight polo teams are entered in this year’s Tiger Building Family Charity Polo

SIZZLING SUMMER SUNDAYS

We are a full service emergency animal care hospital available to help in all after hours veterinary situations.

Just failing to make it against such a talented field was delightful Olympic bronze medallist pole vaulter Elisa McCartney. Particularly difficult will be deciding between the Paralympic medals won by swim star Sophie Pascoe and humorous bolt-out-of- the-blue track sprinter Liam Malone, who has emerged as a real character. Once again, rugby’s Steve Hansen has been nominated for the coach award, this time alongside other worthy candidates Gordon Walker (canoeing), Hamish Willcox (yachting) and Jeremy McColl (athletics). Meanwhile young Black Caps captain Kane Williamson’s timely century for the Basin Reserve cricket test win against gallant Bangladesh has him in a tight race with Ross Taylor to emulate Martin Crowe’s NZ test record 17 centuries. Williamson’s latest effort took his tally to 15, one short of veteran Taylor, whose 60 in partnership with his skipper earned his team a win that seemed so remote after Bangladesh notched a first innings 595-8 declared. What put the icing on the cake was Williamson’s latest heroics took his test average past 50. Equally pleasing was opening batsman Tom Latham’s man of the match first innings 177 which allowed his team to get within striking distance of the tourists total. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

Classy Halberg finalists With Ivan Agnew

nce again New Zealanders can rejoice at the calibre of their amazing sports stars judging from those named as Halberg Award finalists. That the All Blacks could not make the final four for the team prize, after winning a record consecutive 18 tier one tests before their historic first loss to Ireland in Chicago, will irk some rugby diehards. However few would argue that Olympic champion sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke (men’s 49er) and oarsmen Hamish Bond and Eric Murray (men’s pair) are worthy favourites to take the top team prize as well as the overall award. Burling and Tuke not only maintained their incredible form since finishing second

at the 2012 London Olympics, but finished an incredible 45 points clear of their nearest challengers. But for over eagerness in registering two false starts, women’s 47 sailors Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie would have repeated their London gold. That they scored silver speaks volumes for their incredible ability.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Aleh after Powrie recently announced her retirement. Meanwhile Bond has decided to give rowing a temporary break and concentrate on cycling in which he finished a remarkable third in the national road time trial. As the first New Zealand-

born boxer to win a world professional heavyweight championship, Joseph Parker has a chance of winning the Halberg Sportsman title from popular Olympic single sculls champion Mahe Drysdale and bronze medallist athletes Tom Walsh (shot put) and Nick Willis (1500m). However, although a worthy finalist, his chances of beating double Olympic champion Drysdale in particular could be hurt because the heavyweight crown is not unified with British boxer Anthony Joshua and American Deontay Wilder holding other versions of the crown. Such was the standard of competition that dazzling International Rugby Player of the Year Beauden Barrett failed to gain a nomination. Having emulated Drysdale’s feat by backing up gold in London with the same colour in Rio, Lisa Carrington should pip fellow canoeist Luuka Jones, Dame Valerie Adams (shot put) and Lydia Ko (golf ), who all struck silver, for the women’s award.
