$1.4 million renovation under way at First Baptist By WINSTON SKINNER winston@newnan.com One of Coweta County’s largest and oldest churches is undertaking a $1.4 million renovation. First Baptist Church of Newnan is upgrading its sanctuary. The work has already begun, and services are being held at the historic sanctuary, located at the corner of Brown Street and West Washington Street. Services are continuing at 8:30 and 10:50 a.m. each Sunday while the work is underway. The targeted completion for the project is in August. “Since Jesus is accessible to all people, we believe our church should be also,” said Dr. Jimmy Patterson, senior pastor of the church. “We want to remove all barriers for people coming to Christ. Our new initiative will make our church more spiritually, physically, and emotionally accessible to all the people of our region,” Patterson said. The church’s plan is to create “an enhanced place of worship for all generations,” according to a statement. The congregation held a Vision2020 campaign, which led to the plan for upgrades in the main sanctuary, which was con-

both time-consuming but a whole lot of fun,” said Michael Miller, chairman of the Facilities Team. “I realized fairly quickly, as did the rest of the Facilities Team, this was not just another building project – it was about sharpening our God-given tools to better serve Him in the community,” he added. Miller, a historic preservation expert, said there was an effort “to be respectful of the past” in making the plans. “First Baptist Newnan is here today because of the faithfulness of past generations,” he observed. “We also know that what we’re doing now will impact future generations,” Miller said. During the planning process, Miller often found himself quoting First Baptist’s pastor from 1903, when the church celebrated its 75th anniversary and dedicated a Sunday school building: “Let us not … rest on past endeavors. The work of the church is not done, until the Lord comes again … So we must labor, not for ourselves nor for the present generation, but also for those yet to come …” Miller reflected, “I think this conveys what this project is all about – winning future generations for Him.”
