Technology new way for churches to fulfill their mission

n Community Christian Church’s website, there is a welcoming video message from Pastor Ed Martin.

The greeting includes basics about the church and an invitation to visit. What follows is a series of humorous outtakes. The message communicates a lot about Martin and perhaps even more about Community Christian, whose website includes these words: “(E)ven though we take God seriously we don’t take ourselves that seriously.”

Newer churches – particularly those that connect with a younger demographic – tend to use more technology. Four Corners Church and Browns Mill Church are examples.

There is some cost associated with various uses of technology.

Community Christian and Resurrection Lutheran have tried allowing people to give their offering with a debit or credit card.

Adrianne Setzer of Resurrection said the church had to stop the practice because “fees were getting too high.”

Community Christian still offers the service through its greeting centers. While “there are not that many people who use it,” some do, observed Bill Coffman, one of Community Christian’s pastors. “So many people in our society don’t carry cash.”

Some technology is low cost – even free.

Many local churches have a Facebook page that may share a daily Bible verse or thought, images from church events, postings about upcoming activities or requests for prayer.

Community Christian uses lots of technology, including a website with several different features and a Facebook page.

“We’re using it pretty intently,” Coffman said of Facebook.

thematically with the Sunday sermon.

The church has about 50 small groups, and they use a DVD lesson that explores themes related to Sunday’s sermon whenever they meet. Those lessons offer “a way to spark discussion” that brings members into the topic being explored, Coffman said.

Technology changes rapidly, and looking ahead is important for congregations that want to use technology for ministry.

Offering services in multiple locations makes it easier for Community Christian members to have success inviting friends to experience what their church has to offer.

Community Christian’s Facebook page “is pretty well used now,” Coffman said, compared to when the site first went up.

“We knew the power of it,” he said. “We knew it could be used.”

Community Christian does not have a staff member who specifically oversees the web-based outreach, but lots of people are involved. “If you’re not regularly updating it, it becomes stale,” Coffman said. He said posting pictures from “every event we do” is a goal.

The web presence serves as an evangelical tool, but it also serves another function. Community Christian has its offices and worship center on Highway 154 between Sharpsburg and Thomas Crossroads. The church also, however, holds services at Madras Middle School and Northgate High School.

“We’re one church in three locations,” Coffman said. Information and photographs on the web help connect church members who may not see each other on a regular 90

basis. A photo may even reveal that a friend from work or school is a Community Christian member at another site.

Technology also makes the multiple services work together. The sermon at the Sharpsburg site is shown on a large video screen – and taped for use at the other sites.

The tape is physically taken to Northgate and Madras each Sunday morning. “It was a little dicey at first, but we never missed a message,” Coffman said. Videotape was chosen in part because it is easy to use at each site and has less likelihood of technical difficulties.

“At the Madras and Northgate campuses, everything is live except the message, which is on video,” Coffman said. A host pastor at each school personalizes the message at the end and offers people the opportunity to make spiritual commitments or seek counseling or prayer.

Holding services at the schools is part of

Community Christian’s plan to “bring church to the people, rather than bringing people to the church,” Coffman said. He explained that people who love a church will drive 40 minutes to a service, but people who are just wondering what a church is like probably will not.

Offering services in multiple locations makes it easier for Community Christian members to have success inviting friends to experience what their church has to offer.

Community Christian also offers “a way for you to be really involved in the message during the message itself,” Coffman said. Video screens at services list a website. People who have a cellular phone with Internet service can access the site and read relevant Bible passages as the service unfolds.

“You can use this as your Bible,” Coffman said.

Few people accessed the site when it was first offered about 18 months ago, but many do now.

“We were trying to be a little bit ahead of the curve,” Coffman said. CL
