Back to School 2015 Evans Middle begins year in new building By CELIA SHORTT celia@newnan.com
T he 2 01 5 -2 016 Cowe t a County School year will begin on Friday, and Aug. 7, and will usher in some changes for teachers and students. The first change is the new two-story school building for Evans Middle School. This $14.5 million project began in June of 2014 and continued throughout the 20142015 school year. It included demolishing the original O.P Evans school building, erecting a new two story building in its place, and doing other renovations throughout the existing buildings. W it h t he m a i n s c ho ol building being torn down, classes were held in mobile classrooms. “The project has gone very well,” said Ronnie Cheek, facilities director for the Coweta County School System (CCSS). “This one was a little challenging with having to do construction in the middle of the campus,” he added. “The students and staff did great
with it. We had no issues.” The new school building includes new science labs, classrooms, cafeteria, computer labs, and media center. Cheek said the campus’ north building is being renovated and will include bigger areas for art, chorus, and band. There will also be a new bus area and bus canopy. Another big change facing CCSS this school year is the pending transition to an Investing in Educational Excellence School System (IE2). An IE2 school system is a flexibility option offered by the State Board of Education, which allows school systems to continue receiving waivers from some state laws and rules. The state board required all the school systems in Georgia to choose a flexibility option by June 30 to continue receiving waivers. The Georgia Board of Education approved Coweta’s IE2 application for in June. Now, the Coweta County School Board needs to approve the contract from the state. Dean Jackson, public infor-

mation officer for CCSS, said the board anticipates approving it at an upcoming meeting. If approved, the IE2 contract for CCSS will through the 2021-2022 school year. According to the school system, it preserves the current waivers used by CCSS for specific state education codes, rules, guidelines, and policies. It also expands on the flexibility provided by those waivers in return for increased accountability for individual school performance and
school system performance. CCSS is one of the f irst counties to be approved for its new school system, and CCSS Superintendent Dr. Steve Barker sees this approval as the result of years of work and research. “Achieving IE2 will maximize our flexibility and allow for further innovation as our schools seek to provide advance opportunities for our students,” he said in a press release.
The strategic plan for CCSS was adopted a round t h is approach to an IE2 system, so it fits in and expands on what the school system has already been doing. “It calls for maintaining the innovations we have developed over years in Coweta and expanding opportunities to better meet student needs,” said Whitlock of the change. “IE2 is a part of and a continuation of our school system’s overall approach.”
The new required accountability measures will begin on July 1, 2016. They are based on the Georgia’s College and Career Readiness Performance Index (CCRPI). This coming school year will be a baseline to gather performance data, and annual improvement goals will be monitored through the 20202021 school year. The contract is through the 2021-2022 school year so the last year of performance data can be reviewed.
