Fourth grader uses pageant platform to help kids in crisis BY REBECCA LEFTWICH becky@newnan.com

ayla Hedden, 9, understands how important a stuffed animal friend can be to a frightened child.A few years ago, Kayla became ill and was hospitalized at Egleston for several days. To help her feel less afraid, her dad, Steve, brought her favorite stuffed animal – a monkey named Coconut – from home to keep her company. “In a way, it felt like he was protecting me from getting sicker,” said Kayla. Coconut was soon joined by more stuffed friends, gifts from well-wishers to aid in a speedy recovery. “Each one of them was special and provided support during a scary time,” said Kayla’s mom, Angela. After Kayla recovered, she decided to use her experience to help other children in crisis. She had begun competing in – and winning – pageants with community service components, and providing comfort to hospitalized kids seemed like a perfect fit. “Kayla decided she wanted to make sure all kids had a stuffed an-

imal to help them when they were sick,” Angela said. So Kayla – an A honor roll student who is entering fourth grade at Thomas Crossroads Elementary School – created her own community service platform called Operation Koconut. With the help of her family, using simple patterns, she handmakes stuffed animals she calls “koconuts” (spelled with a K, for Kayla) for children who are hospitalized or are otherwise in need of support and comfort. “The goal is to make something special and unique for each kid,” Angela said. “None of them are alike. They’re all different, down to the bows we put on them, and we really take pride in that.” Some adaptation has been necessary because of pandemic conditions. After the animals are completed, they are now sprayed with Microban and allowed to dry before each is securely wrapped in cellophane and sealed shut to keep out contaminants. Kayla has donated hundreds of toys to children’s hospitals, the Ronald McDonald House and emergency shelters. Operation Koconut also recently connected with the Coweta County Sheriff ’s Office, where the stuffed animals will be distributed to children in crisis situations by deputies.

You must start declaring God’s goodness in your life. That is how God says we’re going to be blessed – when we start declaring His goodness. Learn to speak blessings over your life, your friends, your future. Remember, a blessing is not a blessing until it is spoken. If you’ll do your part and start boldly speaking blessings over your life and the lives of those around you, God will provide everything you need to live the life of abundance He wants you to have. He who pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor...He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity. Proverbs 21:21, 23

God is Good All The Time

Sheriff Lenn Wood said Kayla’s contributions will be put to good use. “On a lot of calls, our deputies are the first ones on a scene where a family is in the middle of the worst moments of their lives,” Wood said. “Having something like this to give to a child, to give them any form of comfort in an uncomfortable moment, will mean the world to that child.” Pageant officials recognize the importance of Operation Koconut as well. Earlier this month, Kayla was crowned 202122 Royal International Miss Role Model Sweetheart, winning an international pageant that focuses on leadership skills and giving back to others, recognizing participants for their outstanding community service. “Valuable life lessons learned through volunteer service will serve these girls well, long after their pageant careers are over and as they grow into confident and compassionate citizens in their communities,” pageant officials say on the RIM website. Kayla also received a Silver Service Award for logging 57 hours of community service throughout the year. In addition to her work with Operation Koconut, she served others by teaming up with a “sister queen” and making snack bags for law enforcement officers in five counties; headed up a barbecue sale in her neighborhood to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, collected bears for Operation Care Bear and joining other Georgia pageant queens to donate to Newnan tornado relief. Away from school and pageants, Kayla likes to spend time with her friends and her family, including big brother Tyler, 22, and big sister Faith, 19. She also takes tumbling classes and enjoys all types of arts and crafts, including creating bracelets for her friends. But her spare time may shrink even more if her new pageant title helps get the word out about Operation Koconut. “That’s our goal with this win,” Angela said. “We need everybody’s help to spread this.” Creating or providing simple patterns, sewing together the “skins” to be stuffed, distributing toys and connecting Operation Koconut with hospitals, agencies or other avenues that could help provide comfort to children through Kayla’s stuffed animals are ways the community could become involved in growing the outreach. “Whatever people want to contribute to Operation Koconut would be great,” Angela said. “The opportunities for us right now are endless.” For more information on how to help, email operationkoconut2@gmail.com .

CNC to mark Founder’s Month at Grey Matters dinner NTH STAFF REPORTS news@newnan.com

T

he local nonprofit Can’t Never Could is observing August as Founder’s Month and will hold its annual Grey Matters Dinner Event on August 30 at the Newnan Centre. This year’s speaker is Steve Stirling, President and CEO of MAP International, a Christian organization providing medicines and health supplies to those in need around the world so they might experience life to the fullest. Stirling assumed the role in mid 2014 after holding leadership positions in major corporations and nonprofit organizations including ChildFund International, Heifer International, Univera Life Sciences, Childhelp and World Vision U.S. Stirling earned his bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics at Cornell University and his MBA in Marketing and Finance at Northwestern University’s Kellogg Grad-

uate School of Management, during which time he also studied international business in Paris, France. His book, The Crutch of Success, chronicles his early years in a Korean orphanage, his adoption into a large, loving family in Alaska, his battle against polio and his determination to succeed. Steve and his wife, Sook Hee, have two grown children. The Grey Matters dinner will also mark the birthday of CNC’s founder, the late Rob Estes of Newnan. On August 16, 2013, Rob was diagnosed with an incurable form of brain cancer called glioblastoma. After the removal of a five-centimeter tumor in his right frontal lobe, he lost his battle on December 17, 2017, but not without a fight. As a result of this experience, Rob’s family realized the importance of faith, community, perseverance, and hope. They also realized the importance of helping others in their times of adversity. For this reason, they founded Can’t Nev-

er Could soon after his diagnosis. Because Rob was born on August 29, 1971— and Can’t Never Could was founded in August—CNC now honors the memory of its founder each August. Can’t Never Could, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation that is dedicated to helping individuals and groups who are facing adversity and personal battles. Through monetary donations, support, and faith in Jesus Christ, CNC aims to instill determination and hope in those who are experiencing these challenges. Can’t Never Could says it makes these contributions “with the desire to glorify Christ, who provides strength in all circumstances.” The name of the organization comes from Rob’s mother, Martha Ann Parks. When Rob was a child and would tell her he couldn’t do something, she would often reply, “Can’t never could.” For tickets to the Grey Matters Dinner or other information about CNC, please visit cantnevercouldinc.com.

NTH Pet of the Week MarkeTplace

hi!

My name is:

Molly

M

olly is a super-friendly dog who has been at the Coweta Animal Services shelter since Feb. 1, 2020. While Molly loves people, she can be dog aggressive. Molly likes some dogs, but some she doesn't. She's never been tested with cats. Potential adopters who have other dogs in the home should bring them to meet Molly before considering taking her home. However, Molly would probably do best in a home by herself, said shelter workers. Molly is approximately 4-years-old and weighs 60 pounds. She has one light blue eye and one brown eye. Until recently, Molly, and several other dog selective dogs, were on the "rescue only" list, but are now being made available for public adoption. Molly loves to roll around on the ground and play, and particularly loves tug-of-war. She's a "really good" dog who is kennel trained and likes taking baths.
