peace fulfilment to Stevens

BY SARAH FAY CAMPBELL sarah@newnan.com

ohn Stevens loved art as a child and teenager and had hoped to pursue a career as a commercial artist. But as a teen, his father, a food scientist, said him down for a talk. "He said, ‘Son, if you are an artist you may not be able to put food on the table. But as a food scientist you can always put food on the table,’” Stevens recalled. So Stevens took his father's advice, put away his paints and brushes, and pursued a career in food science. It was a very successful one, and he retired as vice president of research and development for a major company.

During all those years, Stevens never picked up painting again. Not until retirement, when his wife, Cheree, convinced him to take it up once more. He had stopped painting years before he met her, but she had seen a painting he did as a youngster that his grandmother had framed. "It was a still life, and it was ugly," Stevens said. He had actually torn it up, but his grandmother had patched it, framed it and hung it in her home. His wife didn't think it was ugly either. "She asked, ‘Why don't you get into painting? You've got time,’" he

Traditionally an oil painter, John Stevens had to make the switch to acrylics for the newspaper box project.

recalled. At first, he resisted, but she convinced him. "I hadn't painted in 43 years. I picked up the brush and – it was like getting back on a bike. Just – boom!" Stevens said. "And I found painting gives me tremendous peace," he said. "I just love the relaxation, seeing something develop on a canvas; it's very fulfilling." Stevens paints in oils, and primarily paints landscapes, many inspired by his extensive travels. His sister asked him to paint

You must start declaring God’s goodness in your life. That is how God says we’re going to be blessed – when we start declaring His goodness. Learn to speak blessings over your life, your friends, your future. Remember, a blessing is not a blessing until it is spoken. If you’ll do your part and start boldly speaking blessings over your life and the lives of those around you, God will provide everything you need to live the life of abundance He wants you to have. He who pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor...He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity. Proverbs 21:21, 23

a bear for her home, and he found he could paint animals. He's been commissioned to paint a fox, dogs and cats. Oils won't work for the newspaper box project, so he had to make the switch to acrylic. Bette Hickman, who painted the first box and recruited artists for the project, said she would give him some acrylics to try. Oils dry slowly … very slowly. Acrylics dry fast. Too fast. "I like to spend time on my paintings, to come back a couple of days later and it still be wet," Stevens said. Acrylic "forces me to work quicker." After getting a feel for acrylics, it was time to figure out what to paint on his box. The Stevens moved to Georgia five years ago to be near family, after living in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Stevens said his wife suggested painting something that is of Georgia, and they decided to do foxes. "So I went online and looked for foxes,” he said. He decided to paint them more impressionistically than his typically heavily detailed landscapes. Stevens had planned to give away his acrylics after finishing the paper box. But then he decided to keep them after all, and not long after, his neighbor asked him to do a painting of a cat, which would be framed under glass. Oils can never go behind glass, so it had to be acrylic. "I still prefer oil but, for a number of jobs, acrylic is the only way to go," he said. “Plus, since it does dry so quickly, you can always paint over it.” Stevens likes to paint for family and friends, and while he's had people recommend he post paintings on Etsy and try to sell more, that's not something he wants to do. "Then I'm turning things out, and not doing it for fun," he said.
