arge crowds of people packed the streets of downtown Newnan on Sunday for the city’s annual Fourth of July parade. The parade, put on by the city of Newnan, featured everything from local churches to a combined band featuring all three high schools in Coweta County, to a vintage fire engine belonging to the city. The parade route started off at Veterans Memorial Park, located next to McKoon Funeral Home on Jackson Street, moved through the historic Court Square, under a gigantic American flag suspended from two fire engines in front of the 1904 Courthouse, and toward Greenville Street Park just south of downtown Newnan. Behind Arrowood was representatives from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2667, whose work to celebrate the Gold Star families of Newnan and Coweta County was highlighted at the parade. Following the VFW representatives was the combined band from each of Coweta’s three high schools. They were followed by a walking group from the Featherston Heights neighborhood group, and then by Coweta FORCE, another walking group. They were followed by representatives from Royal Baptist Church, located at 70 Mayo Industrial Road in Newnan. Those representatives rode on a float and carried various church flags. Behind them was some relief from the heat that faced Newnan residents along
the parade route, in the form of Foundation Christian Church. Their presence was very memorable at Sunday’s parade, with a man dressed as a “bomb pop” ice cream and church members handing out ice cream to those along the parade route. A float from Hero Roofing followed, and they were followed by an antique hobby car from the Hartel and Woods family. Behind them was a float from the Coweta County Democratic Party, which was followed by a float from the Kiwanis Club of Newnan, which brought along a mini ferris wheel, promoting the upcoming Coweta County Fair, which will be held Sept. 16-26. Following them was Mrs. Plus Georgia, who blew bubbles at those in the crowd. They were followed by an antique fire department, with City Councilman Ray DuBose riding shotgun.

Spirit night, scholarship commemorate fatal skydiving accident BY SARAH FAY CAMPBELL sarah@newnan.com

onday will be a year since Coweta teen Jeanna Triplicata was killed in a skydiving accident. Triplicata's family has established a scholarship fund in her memory for students in the Northgate High School color guard and winter guard, and a major fundraiser for the scholarship will be held on Monday – the anniversary of her death. Triplicata and her grandmother went skydiving on July 12, 2020, in Upson County. They were doing tandem jumps with instructors. While her grandmother landed safely, Triplicata and her instructor were both killed when their main parachute failed to deploy. A "spirit night" fundraiser will be held Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lepoma's Pizzeria at Thomas Crossroads, where Triplicata worked. The family will be in the private dining room for the event and invites those coming to the fundraiser to drop in and say hello. The fundraiser applies to dine-in and to-go orders, but patrons must mention they are there for the scholarship spirit night. The Jeanna Triplicata Sunshine Scholarship will pay for most of the guard dues for one color guard and one winter guard participant at Northgate each season. Jeanna loved color guard and winter guard, so a scholarship to help participants afford guard dues was a no brainer, said her mother, Bridgette Triplicata. "Color guard was such a blessing to her," she said. She made great friends, and as a freshman, it really helped with the transition to high school. Dues are several hundred dollars a season, and with Jeanna participating in both fall and winter guard, paying the dues wasn’t always easy, Brigette said. They would have the payments drafted out of their account over time, and she recalled Jeanna often asking to make sure the payments had gone through. "She would be thrilled to know that somebody else doesn't have to worry about it," Bridgette said. The scholarship will cover most, but not all of the dues, so that scholarship winners will still have some skin in the game. The scholarship award will be based on need as well as an essay.
The topic of the essay is, "Tell us what being kind means to you, and tell us about a time that you were kind to someone that needed it the most," Brigette said. The band director and the family will make the decision on who will be awarded the scholarship, she said. The funds will go through the Northgate Band Boosters. When Jeanna graduated last year, billboard company Saben Outdoors offered low cost billboards to help celebrate the graduates of 2020, because they weren't able to have a traditional graduation ceremony. The Triplicatas purchased one for Jeanna. After her accident, the company reached out to provide a memorial billboard, Bridgette said. And the company has also donated space on multiple billboards to promote the spirit night. The spirit night isn't the only way to donate to the scholarship fund. M
embers of the Newnan Coweta Board of Realtors, and the Trinity Football team, headed out Tuesday to help with tornado debris cleanup. The groups gathered at RiverLife's offices on Belt Road, before heading out to help several local residents with debris removal and cleanup. Though it's been more than three months since the March 26 tornado, there are still many needs for help with removing damaged buildings and downed trees. RiverLife works to pair volunteers with
those in need of construction projects. Pre-tornado, the organization focused on projects like small home repairs, handicapped ramps and yard work. "Now we do disaster relief," said Melanie Reeves of RiverLife. Reeves said that Richard Prang of the board of Realtors contacted her about getting a group together for a work day. A board member, Creighton Rollins, volunteers with the Trinity Lions and brought the team to help out. "It started with everybody trying to figure out who to go to and what to do,"

Prang said. That's where RiverLife steps in. The organization has put on the bi-annual ServeCoweta service events for years; but now, people can sign up to do volunteer work for tornado relief on most Saturdays. Local churches and other organizations are coordinating cleanup groups through RiverLife. Groups can also contact the organization to schedule a work day. And if you need help with debris cleanup, contact RiverLife to make sure they know about your need. Before too long, RiverLife will begin moving toward the rebuilding phase, and
will be helping to organize volunteers. There will be plenty of things that volunteers can do to help with rebuilding. Trinity Head Coach Kenny Dallas said that right after the tornado, team members wanted to serve, and they were looking for opportunities. But the organizations they reached out to were flooded with volunteers. "They said: wait a little while, let it clear out. There will be plenty of need for a long time," Dallas said. Dallas said they teach their players that "God gives you strength to be able to help and to take care of others. Part of our mission is teaching our kids to love God and love others," he said.
