Peachtree City company bids on Trump wall Peachtree City company Synergy Professionals is among five Georgia firms that are bidding to build the wall on the Mexico border, as proposed by President Donald Trump. Sy nerg y P rofessionals, which specializes in recruiting for the construction industry, declined to comment on the project. ACC Construction Co. and C4 Planning Solutions in Augusta, Thompson Co. in

Norcross, and Osprey Management in Sandy Springs are also Georgia bidders. The federal government has extended its deadline for companies to bid on the first contracts for the proposed wall to Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. Earlier this month, the agency published requests for proposals for wall that would be 30 feet high and easy on the eye for those looking at it from the north, according to the Associated Press. A candle left burning while the occupants were asleep appears to be the cause of the fire that occurred March 1 at 74 East Cole Street in East Newnan. Coweta County Firefighter/Paramedic Michael Norton was one of the Coweta Fire Rescue firefighters who responded to the f ire, which occurred in the early morning hours. Late that night, his wife found him unresponsive in their Troup County home, and he later died. The Cole Street home had no electricity or running water at the time of the fire, and according to

Tickets are $1 each and can be purchased at any one of several booths located around the downtown square. Tickets can also be obtained ahead of time at several designated locations surrounding the courthouse until 12 p.m. on the day of the event. C.S. By KANDICE BELL kandice@newnan.com Nearly 500 people gathered to pay respects to 4-year-old Dedrick “DJ” Alford Jr. as he was laid to rest on April 1, and his family is trying to pick up the pieces and figure out life without the child. DJ died at the end of last month after allegedly being beaten by his stepfather, Dontavious Carter. Carter and DJ’s mother, Shronda Parks, are behind bars in Clayton County and charged with child cruelty. DJ’s family celebrated his life with a candlelight vigil and balloon release at Sewell Mortuary on Charlie Patterson Road in Grantville. The funeral, which was held at Total Faith Missionary Church of God on Railroad Street in Luthersville, had a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle theme, one of DJ’s favorite shows. Andrea Moreland, DJ’s paternal grandmother, said the family is concentrating on being there for one another and helping the child’s father – her son, Dedrick Alford Sr., get custody of his two daugh-

Coweta Fire Inspector Enrico Dean stated Tuesday that his investigation indicated the f ire was caused by a candle. There is still no word on the cause of Norton’s death. Norton, 38, was a 17-year veteran of the Coweta Fire Department. Troup Coroner Jeff Cook said Tuesday that he hadn’t received results from the state crime lab and didn’t expect any for at least a few more weeks. Because of the circumstances, the crime lab is “going to look at this really hard,” Cook said. The medical examiners are running an extensive battery of tests to determine what caused Norton’s death.

Long list of local events kick off spring in Coweta The county has played host to several recent events, from womanless beauty pageants to outdoor markets, live artist demonstrations and talented up-and-coming musicians playing right on the court square in Newnan. But for Coweta, the best is yet to come. Spring isn’t official in Newnan until dinner is served — downtown on the square. The Taste of Newnan will be held April 20 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. and will feature sample menus from restaurants and caterers across Coweta. More than 7,000 community members are expected to taste dishes — and desserts — throughout the evening from more than 40 local vendors. “The Taste of Newnan is our largest downtown event and a community favorite,” said Main Street Manager Courtney Harcourt. “We have over 30 commitments from local Newnan and Coweta restaurants and an assortment of entertainment [for the evening]. Visitors can expect to taste speciality dishes from a variety of new vendors.”

The gobbler By ALEX MCRAE Special to The Newnan Times-Herald It’s turkey season in north Georgia. Hunters are overjoyed. I’m not. Mostly because turkey talk reminds me of how I look. W he t her you’re a n Oly mpic at h lete or a couc h p ot ato, a s t he years pile up, your skin s t a r t s to s a g . P re t t y soon, you’re sporting a big f lap of loose, wrinkled f lesh below your chin. Scientists call it a wattle. The rest of us call it turkey neck. If you’re a tom turkey, this is a plus. A big wattle on a male turkey attracts hens. A big wattle on a man sends people running for a barf bag. Unlike male turkeys, I don’t need to wave my wattle to get a girl. I've already got a great one. My w i fe, A ngela , sometimes agrees to be seen in public with me, wattle and all. She doesn’t bring it up, but when we’re out together I hear the laughs and snorts and wh ispers of “ t u rkey neck” as people pass by. Angela deserves better. I looked for a solution shor t of beheading. I’m not the only one seeking help. A Google sea rch for “neck wattle” delivered 425,000 results. I checked out a few.

Livestrong pros s a id t he be st way to lose the wattle was to stretch your neck. The website recommended head rotations. Instructions said, “To perform a head rotation, sit or stand with your head faci ng for wa rd . Turn your head slowly to the left as far as you can manage. Keep the movement of your head smooth and controlled.” Then you do the same thing to the right. I’ll pass. Facial fitness expert Cynthia Rowland said you could tighten your wattle by tilting your head back until all you see is the ceiling. Hold the pose until your neck hurts. Then do it again. And again. I figured taping photos to the ceiling might help you remember why you’re doing something so stupid. Pictures of the local cemeter y ought to do it. Alan Jackson to join Hall of Fame NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Country star Alan Jackson, actor-singerguitarist Jerry Reed and songwriter Don Schlitz will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame later this year. Their selection was announced Wednesday. Jackson, 58, from Newnan, Georgia, broke out in 1990 with his neotraditional style of honky-tonk country music that earned him several multiplatinum records. His hit songs include “Chattahoochee,” ‘’She’s Got the Rhythm (And I Got the Blues)” and “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning).” Jackson, with his signature white hat, said during the press conference that his dad’s wooden radio inspired him to write “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow,” one of his first singles. The radio is now in an exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, along with a pair of water skis he wore for the music video for “Chattahoochee.” “I’ll be in the Hall of Fame with Daddy Gene’s radio and my water skis and some blue jeans with holes in them,” Jackson said. The singer-songwriter earned two Gra m my Awa rds a nd was na med entertainer of the year three times by the Country Music Association. Over the course of his 25-year career, he’s the second most nominated artist in CMA history with 81 nominations and has had more than 30 No. 1 country hits.

“This is about the last dream on the list, right here,” Jackson said. Reed, from Atla nta , Georgia , became a popular country star in the 1960s with his finger style picking that earned him the nickname “Guitar Man.” which became the title of one of his signature songs. His hits include Grammy-winning “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot” and “Amos Moses.” After regularly appearing on Glen Campbell’s T V show, he started a successful career in Hollywood. He starred opposite Burt Reynolds in the “Smokey and the Bandit” films and appeared in Adam Sandler’s “The Waterboy.” He died in 2008 at 71. His daughters Seidina Hubbard and Lottie Zavala spoke on his behalf Wednesday. Schlitz, 64, from Durham, North Carolina, has written dozens of top country hits including “The Gambler,” ‘’On The Other Hand,” ‘’Forever and Ever, Amen,” ‘’The Greatest” and “When You Say Nothing At All.” His songs were cut by Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Judds, Tanya Tucker and more. He has won three CMA song of the year awards and two Grammy Awards, and has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. “I will never be able to believe that I deserve this, unless I receive it as a representative of my family, my mentors, my collaborators, my promoters and my friends,” Schlitz said. “That’s the only way I can deal with this.”
