Pennies for Patients

Raises Funds for Leukemia, Preemie Charities By W. WINSTON SKINNER winston@newnan.com

Hotdog! That’s what Kasey Calhoun, the school nurse at Unity Elementary School, agreed to become to raise funds for two health-related charities. Calhoun’s stage turn as a frankfurter was the culminating event in a weeklong series of fundraising events – called Pennies for Patients – at the school in Luthersville. Pennies for Patients involved “fundraising efforts to raise money for both the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and March of Dimes for premature babies,” said Erika White, counselor at Unity. The school has raised money for the leukemia charity before but this was the first year to add the March of Dimes as a recipient. The students chose to raise money in honor of Braelynn Norton, daughter of Mrs. Brittany Norton, a kindergarten teacher at the school. Braelynn “was born nine weeks prematurely, weighing only two pounds and nine ounces and stayed in the Fayette Piedmont NICU for five weeks,” White said. Students were given donation boxes to bring in loose change from home and were encouraged to talk with friends and family about donating to the campaign. Stickers and tattoos were dispersed as children brought in their donations. Events the first week included: “Don’t let Cancer make you Wacky, show your spirit and get Tacky,” tacky

Just days after the fourth-annual race event, Kelly Preston, founder of Raising Awareness, Compassion and Education (RACE) for the Orphans, received word the event exceeded even her highest hopes for the total number of community participants. The RACE, which includes a Tot Trot, a one-mile fun run and a professionally times 5K, is the main fundraiser for the local nonprofit that assists families financially in the process of domestic or international adoption. Preston, who noted that the RACE is “more of a community ministry” than simply her own nonprofit organization, excitedly announced the latest totals via email. “This was our biggest [RACE] yet, well above last year’s total of 450 participants, so thank you for your support,” Preston wrote in an update to attendees. “Your participation will help bring four children home to their forever families... so know that you did more than run or walk today, you helped change lives.” This year, the RACE will benefit

four different families who are adopting children internationally from both China and Ethiopia. The nonprofit will continue to accept donations from the community, and RACE t-shirts are available for purchase while supplies lasts. Preston noted that, along with the number of participants, the organization was able to raise a record amount of funds for the adoptive families at the recent event. “We were able to raise around $30,000 this year,” Preston said. “It is wonderful. All of these families have extraordinary expenses.” The Preston family began the RACE in 2013 after adopting their own daughter, Jenna, from China.
