ood always seems to taste better when enjoyed outdoors. No matter the occasion or location, these packable, snackable recipes are foods fit for a fabulous picnic. Bean Salad Stuffed Shells are a simple, flavorful, portable appetizer. Jumbo shells filled with a can of 3 or 4 bean salad, herbs and cheese make great finger food. Baby Beet and Farro Salad is an easy pack-and-go side. Whole pickled baby beets — just right for one bite — are the star of this whole grain salad, tossed with Dijon mustard dressing. Picnic Sandwiches with Pickled Beet-Mango Slaw, piled

high with deli meats, goat cheese and a tangy-sweet slaw can be made ahead. Wrapped tightly and refrigerated for several hours, the flavors meld deliciously. Warm weather classic lemonade gets a ruby-red makeover. Simply add antioxidant rich beets to frozen lemonade concentrate, and Pink Lemonade is ready to enjoy. A Tex-Mex inspired picnic of Southwestern Marinated Chicken with Bean Salad is a meal all its own. The grilled chicken — marinated in liquid from a can of southwestern bean salad — pairs perfectly with the bean salad for a fast fiesta that can be served warm or chilled — just add tortillas and perhaps a margarita.

Camping 101

Make Your Family Camping Trip a Success O

ne of the more affordable and family-friendly vacation options is camping. Families get the chance to experience some of nature’s most idyllic settings at a fraction of the cost of expensive resort vacations. But before venturing out in the great outdoors, a family should consider the following tips to ensure their camping vacation is a swimming success.

But have a child, and there's no how-to guide that comes with the new baby. Parents must learn the ropes themselves with some guidance from others who have been there. Parents with good intentions make mistakes when parenting their children, and most of these mistakes are quite common. Parents employ many strategies for raising children the right way. It is often a task of trial and error to find methods

that work in certain families. When making parenting decisions, individuals may want to avoid these common pitfalls that may lead to potential problems down the line with children's behavior.

Do as I say, not as I do. Parents are often guilty of instructing children how to do something, but not following their own advice. For example, telling children to eat a balanced meal (including those vegetables) while the parent doesn't put any on his or her plate. Children learn best by example, and they are always watching their parents' behavior. Setting a good example all of

Research the weather. Before choosing a campsite, get a firm grasp of what to expect from Mother Nature while you’re there. Research weather patterns and how much the weather can vary during the time of year when you will be vacationing. Does the weather fluctuate significantly during the daytime and nighttime hours? Is rain likely or unlikely? Weather conditions will dictate which gear is necessary for the trip, and families might want to avoid campgrounds that are

Find an activity-friendly campground. When looking for a campground, look for one that boasts a lot of activities. Adults might enjoy the simple relaxation of camping, but kids will likely need more to do. Look for a campground that can offer activities the children will like, such as hiking, kayaking, rafting, or even mountain biking.

Determine who you are as campers. Not all campers enjoy the rustic life of camping. Some need to combine camping with the amenities of modern

Failure to be consistent. Empty threats will soon be recognized by children for what they are. If a certain punishment is mentioned in reference to poor behavior, it is important to follow through. Don't allow children to feel as though they can behave badly without facing consequences.

Setting unrealistic expectations. This is a fast-paced world, and one in

Sun Myths Exposed When the weather gets warmer, a great number of people take to the outdoors to participate in athletics, to enjoy a meal al fresco or to take a dip in a pool. However, fun in the sun does come with risk, most notably overexposure to the sun’s potentially harmful rays. Misinformation often reigns supreme with regards to sun exposure. Here are some common sun myths debunked.

Coweta’s Greatest Generation available in a

Limited Edition Hardcover Book

Myth:: I don’t have to worry about the sun on cloudy days.

Truth: There is a risk of exposure to UV radiation even on cloudy days, necessitating the application of a sunscreen or sunblock. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, up to 80 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can still pass through the clouds. Even if the weather is cool or overcast, apply sunblock before going outdoors.

Myth: Most sun damage occurs

Myth: Sun rays do not pass through windows.

before age 18. Truth: Recent studies indicate that previous estimates were inaccurate and that only 25 percent of sun exposure occurs during childhood. That makes being sun-smart important at any age.

Truth: UVB rays cannot pass through windows but UVA rays can. While you may not get a sunburn sitting next to a window, you may experience premature aging from freckling and wrinkles.

Myth: Establishing a base tan provides a safe way to tan afterward. Truth: There is no such thing as a safe tan if it’s coming from the sun or a tanning bed. Spending prolonged periods of time outdoors unprotected from the sun can damage the skin. For those who want to have skin that glows, consider a self-tanning lotion.

Myth: A beach umbrella is adequate protection from the sun at the beach.

Myth: Light clothing reflects the

sun’s rays while dark colors absorb it.

Fact: Some makeup will offer a light measure of protection from the sun, but will not be adequate. Furthermore, some shiny or glossy products actually can draw the UV rays to areas where the product was applied.

Truth: UV rays tend to pass through light-colored fabrics easier than darker ones. If you are able to see light through a piece of clothing, there’s a good chance UV rays can pass right through to the skin. Choose deep colors to protect the skin better.

Fact: Although the umbrella will shade you somewhat, the surrounding sand reflects up to 17 percent of UV radiation. That means you can still get skin damage if you don’t apply sunblock. Myth: Makeup that contains

Myth: Sunscreens can increase skin cancer rates.

Truth: Research indicates this is only the case if you use sunscreen to spend more time out in the sun. When used correctly, sunscreens can lower skin cancer rates. Myth: Dark-skinned individuals do not get sunburn. Truth: Although people with more melanin pigment in their skin may not burn at the same rate as lighter-skinned individuals, there is still the chance for skin damage if sunscreen isn’t used.

light exposure is necessary for the body to produce vitamin D naturally, it doesn’t take that much exposure to do so, even when wearing sunscreen. The Cancer Council says most people get enough vitamin D from their everyday activities during the summer, even when protected with hats, sunscreen and clothing. During the months when there is limited sunlight, a supplement may be needed.

Our system of “common law” is based on the ancient law of England that ensures fair and equitable judgement. Alongside statutes and ordinances, courtmade laws serve as “precedents” that guide future courts faced with similar decisions. Thus, whenever a judge writes an opinion deciding a case, it is an important matter for all those living under the law because that court-made law becomes part of the common law and will affect anyone faced with similar situations. Decisions made by lower courts may be implemented, but do not necessarily bind other state courts to make the same decision. However, decisions made by the highest court in the state (Supreme Court) are rulings that bind other courts. HINT: Decisions made by the state Supreme Court bind all other state courts until time, custom, and social change compel the court to change the doctrine. Otherwise, the legislature can change the law.

Parenting Camping Continued from Page 1 which many people are trying to keep up with the Jones'. This can cause parents to compare their children to others the same age and wonder whey their kids are not yet meeting a milestone someone else may have accomplished. As a result, parents tend to get pushy and impatient with their own children. This is often the case with a toddler who is not yet ready to potty train or a teenager who has yet to a commit to a course of study at school. Parents should set realistic expectations for their children, taking time into consideration. All children mature or do things on their own schedules — and will come around in time.

Offering too many choices. Children presented with too many options might become indecisive. Parents can keep this in mind when allowing kids to have some independence by making a few decisions but limiting the choices to a manageable amount. For example, when asking children what they may want for breakfast, only give three choices, such as: cereal, oatmeal or yogurt. They'll still feel like they are making choices, but fewer options are less likely to overwhelm kids.

Packing the schedule. More is not necessarily better when it comes to setting a child's schedule. Too often parents fill their kids' schedules with too many activities, especially extracurriculars. Although afterschool activities help kids make more friends and become well-rounded individuals, overdoing it can cause stress, fatigue or inability to concentrate. Children need a balance between just having fun with free play and their school and extracurricular commitments. Having something to do each and every afternoon may overwhelm some children. Over-praising mundane things. It's good to reinforce positive behavior with praise, but often parents heap on too much praise or reward things that don't have much merit. This may cause children to expect a pat on the back every time they do something. When parents applaud everything a child does, he or she may end up undermining the effectiveness of praise as a form of positive reinforcement.

Continued from Page 1 life, including running water and toilets that flush. Campers should be honest with themselves in regards to their needs in amenities when researching campgrounds. If you and your family will need a shower, consider renting an RV for the trip or choose a campground with accessible showers and restrooms. Veteran campers might scoff at such amenities, but families would likely prefer some combination of roughing it in the wild and modern day living.

right gear, don’t forget to stock up on the other essentials. Particularly during the warmer months, campgrounds can be very hot and insects abound. Be sure to bring adequate amounts of sunscreen and bug spray and apply each liberally every day. Even if the sky is overcast, apply sunscreen to avoid painful sunburn. Other essentials include toilet paper (bring more than you expect to use), bottled water, plates and utensils, and garbage bags. Be

Get the right gear.

Solution to crossword on page 2.

sure to bring extra garbage bags to avoid littering in the campground.

Don’t forget to have fun. Families should emphasize having fun when visiting the campground. Because camping is not a resort-style vacation, it’s up to Mom and Dad to entertain the kids. Bring along a guitar for a campfire sing-a-long, and pack a few board games the family can enjoy under the stars at night.

Children and adults are not equal. In an effort to befriend their children, parents often worry about hurting feelings or having their kids mad at them. Children shouldn't be treated as small adults, and parents should remember they are parents first and foremost. Some decisions will be unpopular, but such decisions need to be made if they are in the child's best interest.

✓ If you’ve got questions, don’t be shy about seeking help. Make friends with other parents and do your research. Discussion boards, mommy blogs and neighborhood email lists are a great resource. ✓ Sleep deprivation can cause anxiety and take a toll on your relationship and parenting skills. Alternating nighttime duty will allow each parent to get a needed dose of uninterrupted sleep. ✓ Don’t forget, you can convince a child that almost anything’s a game. Remember this principle around bath and cleanup time! ✓ A surefire way to impress a toddler is to have some fun animal facts stored in your noggin. Did you know that penguins can jump up to six feet high? ✓ Sibling rivalry is difficult to prevent, but can be managed properly with a bit of sensitivity. Remember to withhold judgment until you’ve learned the whole story. Identify which activities lead to the biggest rivalries, and set up a schedule for alternating whose turn it is to do what.

Entry to many campgrounds is free or nearly free. However, camping gear could cost money. The good thing about camping gear is it’s reusable. If this year’s camping trip is a success, then next year’s trip won’t cost nearly as much. Visit a local camping store and explain your situation, including what you hope to get out of the camping trip and where you’ll be heading. An associate should be able to help you find the right gear for your trip, including a tent, lights, a water filter, cooking materials, and inflatable mattresses. The materials needed for a successful camping trip are many, but again these materials are reusable and can last a lifetime if families choose the right gear.

Nagging doesn't work. Repetitively asking for something to get done may cause children to tune out. If the child doesn't comply in a reasonable amount of time, then he or she will face some sort of punishment.
