“Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? Let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. ideas and a source of income that seems inconsistent with their lifestyle. The Brown’s youngest son, Noah, alone is worth a watch. In a creepy sort of way. National Geographic offers a TV channel for insecure people who need to change channels fast when those friends who “only watch PBS” come over. (You know who they are.) Travel Channel’s biggest hit is “Expedition Unknown,” starring an Indiana Jones wannabe named Josh Gates. Gates is an archaeologist who parachutes, SCUBA dives, motorcycles and mountain climbs his way around the world looking for traces of legendary people and places, including Amelia Earhart, Attila the Hun, Blackbeard and the lost continent of Atlantis. It’s great. The campaign season was brutal. Especially on TV. Take a month or two and treat yourself to some programming designed to let you smile, think and relax. Your blood pressure will thank you. So will your family. One caution. Avoid the “do-ityourself” home-improvement TV shows. The “stars” make it look easy. It’s not. One wrong move and instead of watching a TV show, you could be starring on “Judge Judy” or “Divorce Court.” Send your email comments to: alexmmcrae@gmail.com

follows some dudes as they hunt buried treasure on an island off Nova Scotia. The guys believe if they can dig a real big hole in just the right spot on Oak Island they can find treasure buried over a thousand years ago by medieval warriors—or more recently by Portuguese explorers or Christopher Columbus’ cousin Butch. Awesome viewing. Another History Channel keeper is “Hunting Hitler.” This one features a team of researchers hunting for proof that—instead of killing himself as World War II came to a close—Adolph Hitler escaped to Argentina and lived there for several years. The Hitler hunters have already found evidence of secret escape routes out of Berlin and remains of Nazi military buildings in Argentina. Before the season ends I wouldn’t be surprised to see home movies of Hitler dancing the tango. The Suffering Artist Gallery, located in downtown Hogansville, is quickly approaching the oneyea r a n n iversa r y of its g ra nd opening at the end of February 2016. The gallery’s owners, artist and nurse Sarah Swanson and husband Chris have worked together to produce several unique exhibits throughout the year, including large-scale drawings by Swanson herself along with the work of several additional local artists. It is the latest exhibit, a tribute to veterans which opened to the public with a reception Nov. 19, however, that has likely garnered the most attention from the community. The show included the works of seven local artists in addition to Swanson, each depicting photos of veterans in a variety of sizes, colors and mediums. Swanson collected photos of soldiers set against the backdrop of base camps and battlef ields across the world. Nearly all of the images were submitted by local veterans and their families. “The contributing artists chose from the photos of veterans and created one or more works in their

chosen mediums,” Swanson said, noting that in addition to the collection of art works, several of the submitted images were enlarged and printed on canvas for guests to enjoy. Shortly after discussing the idea for the exhibit, Swanson found that the project had garnered a significant amount of attention including an offer of sponsorship from nearby Wellstar West Georgia. Co-owner and Newnan High School teacher Chris Swanson was offered assistance by the local high school history department, in addition to multiple student volunteers who would help with organizing and managing the event. The reception for “A Good Soldier: An Artistic Tribute to our Veterans” included special speakers Representative Bob Trammell and Hogansville Mayor Bill Sta n k iewicz a nd record g uest attendance. “It was a wonderful show and a wonderful time in Hogansville,” local businesswoman Toni Striblin commented on an event post on Facebook following the event. “The exhibit was wonderful and touching.” Several guests could be heard whispering words of praise for

Swanson for the brilliant idea and thanks to the artists for the art that lead so many of us on the journey to learn more.” “A Good Soldier” will be on exhibit at the Suffering Artist Gallery, located at 311 Main Street in

Hogansville, for the remainder of the year. Contact the local gallery for available business hours. Find the Suffering Artist Gallery online at w w w.sufferingartist. com or call 706-577-5521 for more information.

Review: Set sail with the spirited, familiar ‘Moana’

(AP) — Stop me if this sou nds fa m i l i a r : A Di sney animation film about a bright and spirited young woman who feels stifled by outmoded expectations and dreams of exploring beyond the confines of her home. It’s the premise of “Moana ,” but it’s also that of “The Little Mermaid,” ‘’Beauty and the Beast,” ‘’Mulan,” ‘’Brave” and scores of other animated films about teenage girls. It’s not a bad one by any means, and an understandably captivating foundation for children especially, but “Moana” is, like so many recent films, dressed up as something wholly new and bold and corrective against all the sins of fairy tales past. There’s an entire scene where Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) f ights back against the demigod Maui (Dwayne Joh nson) for ca lling her a “princess” with such fervor that the ultimate effect isn’t “hooray” but more “who cares?” What is so wrong with being a princess versus being the daughter of a chief who will eventually lead the island? It’s just semantics. It’s distracting from both the real virtues of “Moana,” of which there are many, and also fairly dismissive of the mere “princesses” who came before who basically accomplish the same things. In fact, the only real advancement lately is the recent excising of a love interest — but I imagine that has more to do with modern audiences wincing at the idea of a 16-year-old heroine getting married than actual progress

NOW OPEN in developing more complex female characters. But perhaps that, too, is just getting bogged down i n sema ntics i n a not her way and def lecting from the very wonderful and joyous “Moana,” a classic Disney pic to the core, bursting with stunning visuals, good hearted humor, adventure and some truly catchy songs from “Hamilton” maestro Lin-Manuel Miranda. (Move over, “Let it Go,” there is something really grand and even superior about the swelling rally cry of “How Far I’ll Go.”) On Moana’s island, everything looks like a dream — saturated colors and lush landscapes surrounded by an ocean, the lifelike waters of which are a technical and artistic marvel. But Moana’s people distrust the ocean

a nd out sider s a nd ke ep themselves isolated from the rest of the world. Moana, however, is drawn to the sea, and the sea, a character in its own right, is likewise drawn to her. She has been selected as its chosen one. Thus, when things on the idyllic island start to decay, it’s Moana, encouraged by her quirky grandmother Tala (Rachel House), who takes the initiative to sail away to try to return the stolen heart to the fabled island of Te Fiti and save her people. She journeys first to get the help of Maui, a cocky showoff who has his own agenda that doesn’t involve taking orders from a pushy teen, and then across the ocean where Moana, Maui and a dimwitted chicken encounter all kids of obstacles, including a band of

hostile coconuts (a terrific gag), a glam rock hermit crab (Jemaine Clement) at the bottom of the ocean and a vindictive lava monster. The fable of “Moana” is sweet, often funny, spiritual and epic, although Johnson’s reliable charisma gets lost under the animation and the writing. Moana, however, is an excellent character with spirit, doubts, drive and a heck of a voice. She is a perfect addition to the roster of modern Disney heroines and one whom young girls will admire for years to come, princess or not. “Moana,” a Walt Disney Pictures release, is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for “peril, some scary images and brief thematic elements.” Running time: 113 minutes. Three stars out of four.
