Editor’s comment Amongst his many other achievements, celebrated American architect Frank Lloyd Wright was famous for saying, “Wood is the most humanly intimate of all materials. Man loves his association with it, likes to feel it under his hand, sympathetic to his touch and to his eye. Wood is universally beautiful to man.”

This is difficult to dispute and there is no doubt that a space with wood in it, whether it is used in the wall panelling, flooring, furniture or all three, is simply a better place to be. Six months into the EUTR and the impacts are already being felt not only in Europe but also in markets such as the Middle East and India. Whilst traders and operators scramble to ensure ‘due diligence’ and compliance with the regulation, the initial feedback has been that more communication is required to clear some of the confusion around this landmark piece of legislation. As such, we highlight the findings of a recently published report that explores the potential effects of the EU Timber Regulation and the growing demand for forest certification on India’s timber industry. The potential impact is significant given that Indian products listed under the EUTR have an annual export value of around USD 1.3 billion.

NEPCon recognized as EUTR Monitoring organization NEPCon has received formal recognition as a Monitoring Organization (MO), making it one of only two bodies (Conlegno is the other one) that have been recognized as competent to aid companies in complying with the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR). The role of the MOs is to help EU operators fulfill their obligations by providing a due diligence system for legal timber sourcing and conducting regular evaluation of the users’ system implementation.

According to the EUTR guidelines, choosing to work with an MO is voluntary and does not exempt the company from liability.

However, the main benefit for companies of engaging with an MO is the help in navigating the EUTR, safe in the knowledge that they can trust the quality of the provided system as well as the due diligence evaluations.

However, the export of timber products, including pulp and paper, is permitted, and the government has introduced several incentives to encourage the trade.

The EU is a major market for India’s semi-processed and value-added timber products, including wooden handicrafts, pulp and paper, plywood and veneer and wooden furniture.
