Buffalo Hunters: Timber Creek Takes Down Haltom

Timber Creek inched closer to a playoff berth, as the Falcons convincingly defeated Haltom 28-20 on Oct. 19. The first quarter of the game was defense controlled, as the only points scored was a Timber Creek touchdown on a 27 yard passing touchdown. The second quarter saw Haltom take the lead 14-7. Before the halftime clock rang, Timber Creek was able to tie the game on a 46 yard passing touchdown reception by WR Gage Haskin. Timber Creek received the ball to start the third quarter. The Falcons were able to get down field and complete a touchdown reception by future Div. 1 commit, WR Erik Ezukanma, for his ninth touchdown reception of the year. On the next drive Haltom was picked off by LB Noah Gnacinski. The Falcons capitalized off the interception, scoring yet another passing touchdown to WR Nik Nelson, giving Timber Creek a 28-14 lead. Haltom was able to gain points back through an end of the quarter touchdown, making the score 28-20 going into the fourth quarter. The Falcons defense was able to stop Haltom, and show their strength, stopping Haltom at the two yard line to end their possession. Timber Creek soared to victory, winning a shootout 28-20. Golf Prepares In Advance For Spring Districts

For most teams, the winning game always starts and ends in a competition for ‘mosts’: the most baskets, goals, touchdowns, yards, and points. Yet, for the Timber Creek Golf team, athletes strive for the least number of points, or even negative points, hoping to find success throughout the fall season, and further into spring. With only five tournaments left this fall and three more in the spring, the athletes work each day on their short game and chipping, putting, and an emphasis on their shots into the greens. As all their tournaments have been invitationals so far this season, the team has been gaining experience and learning how to play in high pressure situations, preparing in advance for their two day districts in the spring. “Our goal is always to win a district tournament and win a state title,” said Coach Russell Fuqua. “We haven’t done that yet. Our girls got second last year as a team and advanced to the regional tournament, and in the past we’ve had medalist qualifiers. We have some growing to do. The strength is that they’re aggressive, they’re not afraid to do things, but in building that experience sometimes they make mistakes because of lack of experience and knowing how to prepare and get ready for the tournaments.” With some of the youngest student-athletes that the team has ever seen, the team lost five previous senior boys and three previous senior girls after last season, replacing them with incoming freshmen. Structured as a rebuilding year for

the players, the coaches have also moved several boys up to varsity that were previously on junior varsity. “We’ve had a little bit more experience the last few years,” said Fuqua. “There’s some fluctuation, and that gives the players a chance. It always gives them that opportunity to continue to improve, and then make that varsity team. We’ve got 14 boys and six girls. We’ve placed them in tournaments based on previous tournament play, so the [players] who are based on a handicap system we have play on a varsity level…they’re always competing to stay on the varsity team that way.” Hoping to win districts and advance to regions and onward, the team has focused on how they work on their preparation from the very beginning, working on course management each tournament, and overall maintaining that same practice each training day. Trying to implement a game plan for each athlete, the team recently played in two-day tournament in Abilene, facing new challenges for the players. “We don’t [usually] drive that far and then get out and play, so one of the reasons we played that tournament was so that we could experience that. They hadn’t seen that golf course before and we’re going to hold our district tournament [there]. For tournaments, we go and look at the course online ahead of time, or some of the golfers go and play that course if the [it] is local…[so], we can plan different shots and which clubs that we want to use for each hole. We have to improve some to give ourselves a chance, but by the time the spring comes we should be in the mix with everyone else.”

cheer leads homecoming preps

Volleyball Sets Off For Playoffs

Many of the school organizations are invested in making homecoming an enjoyable experience and one of those groups is the Timber Creek Cheer. “Homecoming is a stressful time of the year for everyone,” said sophomore cheerleader, Parker Thompson, “but we have an amazing team and amazing parents and coaches that make it run so smoothly.” Parents of the cheer team were up at the school on the weekends — sometimes til 2 a.m. — decorating the cafeteria, making the decorations, and at lunches making sure that everyone could go to homecoming. The cheer parents came on Monday and the day of homecoming to set up the larger decorations. Their hard work paid off as the tickets to the dance were in high demand and sold out within the first week of sales.

Varsity Volleyball has been making impressive strides this season as it is the first time the team has made playoffs in school history. With a strong win to loss ratio of 8-4, they have shown improvement this season both internally and externally. By hard work and dedication, the volleyball team is ranked 24 in the Texas 6A division and 105 in the state overall. Junior Anna Thomas, who began playing competitive volleyball around the age of 13, touches on the personal effect the sport has had. “Without [the parents] hard work, homecoming would’ve been a lot harder and a lot more stressful,” said Thompson.

“I’ve been able to gain new relationships and appreciate the sport more as I get older,” she said.

Most of the work was done the week before homecoming. The cheer team came in on the Saturday before the week started and began the arduous task of setting up the decorations.

They collected a win against Haltom three to zero in a Friday night away game on Oct. 20 and another hard-fought win versus Fossil Ridge on Tuesday, Oct. 24. The team is hoping for great success in playoffs sitting at 3rd place in the district.

The actual date of Homecoming, Oct. 13, was one of the busiest. Not only did the cheerleaders come fully in their uniforms before the first bell to be featured on the KRLD radio show, but later helped hype up the school and TC football fans at the massive pep rally and football game.

“We have started to grow more as team and a family, which transfers a higher level of play on the court,” Thomas commented on how the team has evolved.

“Friday was probably the most stressful day,” said Thompson, “though everyone was trying to make sure everything was in line for homecoming.”

“The excitement you get in a game and the fun you have in practice has kept the love of the game alive for me,” Thomas concluded.
