I am very pleased to welcome you to this history of Smith’s (Gloucester)) Ltd. Ltd Looking back over the last 34 years I am amazed azed at how far Smiths has come. When I first started out I was just set on establishing a business that would give me and my family a living.

I believe if you enjoy what you do and work hard, hard you can achieve just about bout anything. Hard work is certainly what got Smiths off the ground in the first place and is one of the reasons we continue to be successful.

When it comes to business, I don’t think there is anything more important than having good people around you. My wife Anne and my sister Pam have been with me from the start and made a massive contribution to the business. I am also very ery lucky to have worked with some fantastic people who have stayed with the company and driven it forward through thick and thin. I am immensely proud of the team at Smiths.. I can’t think of a better, better more capable group of people for working hard and getting get the job done.

Fairness and honesty have been the basis for all my business dealings dealing over the last 34 years.

In all our ventures, we don’t aim to be the cheapest, cheapest but we do aim to be the best for our customers. We are true to our word, always do what we say we are going to do and fix things quickly when they go wrong.

Smiths is a family business and I am very proud that my children, Helen, Paul, Rebecca and Lisa, have all chosen to work in the company and are starting to make their mark. With them, and the team we have in place, I am certain the next 34 years will be just as exciting and successful as the last.

Introduction Employing mploying over 400 staff and with a turnover of more than £46m, today Smith’s (Gloucester) Ltd is one of the largest construction and waste management companies in the south-west. south The size and scope of the company’s activities are substantial. It’s difficult to go for more than a few miles on Gloucestershire’s Gloucestershire roads without seeing a Smiths’ truckk or van - there are over 400 of them. From mini-diggers diggers to bulldozers, bulldozers equipment from its Plant ant Hire Division D is in use on construction sites tes across the south-west south and the company has one of the largest fleets of tipper trucks in the region. Smiths have had a hand in most of Gloucestershire’s major development and infrastructure projects in the last thirty years. Iff you are in one of the county’s supermarkets or landmark buildings, or driving along one of its bypasses, there is a good chance that Smithss demolished the old building, levelled the site and dug the foundations.

The company is also a major player in dealing with the region’s waste. Its Trade Waste Division collects waste from over 2,400 customer sites and the Skip Hire Division handles more re than two thousand skip collections each month. In all, the company processes over 140,000 tonnes of waste, recycling 90% of it. And, if you attended the Game Fair, the Cheltenham Festival, or more than twenty other major events across the country, country the site will have been kept clean and the waste collected and recycled by Smiths Event Waste Management team. The company also undertakes precision laser levelling and asbestos removal, and unblocks drains.

It is all the more remarkable that the company we see today has grown from one man, who left school at 16, setting out to make a living with a second-hand JCB. This then is the story of Smith’s (Gloucester) Limited.

Early Years Alan Smith was born in 1959. For the first nine years of his life, together with his sisters Jean and Pamela, and elder brother Richard, he lived above the Rose and Crown Inn at Nympsfield that his parents ran. Alan’s father, Jim Smith, was something of a local character: his friendly, outgoing personality made him a very popular landlord and he had a wide circle of friends. However, his fondness for a drink and a party wasn’t the best combination for a successful landlord.

Alan can remember coming down at five or six o’clock in the morning to find his father in the bar “still whooping it up” with his friends from the The Rose & Crown Inn, Nympsfield previous night’s lock-in. “I think he thought he could drink as much as he could sell.” says Alan. While Jim Smith was often out and about with his friends, the day-to-day running of the pub fell to Alan’s mum, Christine.

Unfortunately Jim’s popularity and generosity as a host weren’t matched by his business skills and when Alan was nine his parents lost the tenancy of the pub and with it the family’s home.

Now homeless, the family had to split up and move in with relations and friends. “Scattered to the four corners of the county” recalls Alan. His father moved in with friends at Selsley, sister Jean went to live with the Allways, a family in Nympsfield, Pam to her Aunt Gladys in Nailsworth and Alan and his mother moved in with his maternal grandmother at Uley “a bit of squeeze in a two bedroom cottage” recalls Alan. Despite the family break-up, Alan has happy memories from this time. He liked living with his Granny Bruton and the move took him closer to school and his friends.

After a year apart, the family was re-united and moved into a council house at Tilsdown in Dursley. Two years later, when Alan was 11, the family moved back to Nympsfield, to a house at Tinkley Corner that remains in the family to this day. Christine took a job at the Lister factory in the village while Alan’s father was now making a living as a manufacturer’s marketing agent, selling ornamental plant pots. Alan has fond memories of accompanying his father on his sales visits.

In 1975, when Alan was 15, tragedy struck when Jim Smith was killed in a road accident. He was driving back from Frome in the early hours of the morning after seeing friends when he crashed headlong into a truck and was killed instantly.

At fifteen, Alan wasn’t particularly keen on school but he had developed a strong love of farming and helped out on the local farms whenever he got the opportunity. He wasn’t averse to skipping school and using his dinner money to put petrol in his moped so he could ride to a nearby farm to work.

In 1976, Alan left school at sixteen and went to work as a labourer for a Mr Benton at Folly Farm near Tetbury. “I wasn’t academically gifted, but I knew I could work hard and that’s 2

what I set out to do” recalls Alan. At the time he was working an 84 hour week for the princely sum of £12.40. Alan wanted to improve himself, so after two years at Folly Farm he took a job with a family friend, Frank Wooldridge, who had a business fitting milking parlours. Frank was a very slightly built man and Alan can remember his mum always insisting he take an extra packed lunch to help feed Frank up.

Working for Frank, the hours were a lot less than at Folly Farm and Alan’s wages jumped to £70 a week. Although he liked working with Frank, Alan found the mostly indoors work wasn’t quite his cup of tea and after two years he left to set up as an agricultural contractor in partnership with his brother-in-law, Gerald Smith, Jean’s husband. The pair gradually acquired the equipment they needed, including a very beat-up second-hand JCB. The pair based the operation on Arthur Heaven’s farm at Nympsfield. “He was a good old boy, Arthur.

We really owed him a lot - he gave us work when we didn’t have any and gave us space when we couldn’t afford to buy or rent anywhere” says Alan.

Although they picked up a reasonable amount of work, it was an uneasy partnership, not helped by the fact that Alan was living in the same house as his brother-in-law and sister.

They were long days for Alan: he would get up at three or four in the morning, work on the farm for a few hours, do a day’s contracting, then return to work on the farm until late in the evening. After two years Alan decided to leave the partnership. In dissolving the partnership, Alan agreed that Gerald could hang on to all the agricultural equipment, provided he could keep the JCB. Thus, in 1982, Alan set up Smiths Plant Hire and set out to make his living with one rather old JCB. His first job was with Gloucestershire County Council working on the county’s roads. “It wasn’t a contract as such. I just had this vigour for turning up and getting the job done and they liked that, so kept giving me work” recalls Alan.

It wasn’t all plain sailing though – the old JCB was missing half its windows and Alan couldn’t afford to replace them. He can remember turning up one winter’s day and having to shovel a foot of snow out of the cab before he could start work.

“It was a horrible old thing but it got me started” Alan in his first JCB Another important contract from the early years was at the Listers factory in Dursley. The work, which involved breaking up concrete, could only be done at night, so Alan would do a full day’s work for the council then work through the night at Listers. He did this for two days and two nights on the trot before being found asleep at the controls of his JCB by one of the factory workers. “We just never said no” Alan says of his approach to taking on work at the time.

1982 – 1990 Foundations “I’ve never considered myself a natural leader. What I have had is a lot of people who have understood what I was trying to do and been prepared to follow me” Alan Smith After a year in business, Alan could afford to purchase a second JCB. Over the next few years, as business continued to grow, Alan would be joined by a number of people who would stay with the company and play major roles in its development.

Merv and Chris Tilling The first employee Alan took on, to drive the second JCB, was Merv Tilling, who he knew from Uley Motocross club.

With no low loader, Alan and Merv had to drive their JCBs to and from all their jobs. After his first week in the job, having driven to and from Hereford, Ross-on-Wye and Moreton-in-Marsh, Merv complained he’d done more miles in his JCB that week than the previous year in his car.

Merv would become the company’s best and most experienced plant operator and was responsible for training and mentoring many of the younger operators that followed.

“He was a great guy Merv” recalls Alan “He was like a father to me and became part of the family.”

Merv would stay with Smiths up until he retired in 2009. Even after retirement he continued to work off and on for Smiths up until he passed away suddenly in 2011, aged 72.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Merv’s son Chris joined Smiths in 1990 as a mechanic. He then progressed to overseeing the daily running of the transport, plant and fabrication workshops. All staff in these workshops reported to him. During his 25 years of loyal service Chris was a pillar of strength, supporting Alan Smith and Smiths’ ever increasing fleet of plant, machinery and lorries. Alan Smith described him as “the man that can fix anything with a pair of scissors and a knitting needle”. Chris left Smiths in 2015 to pursue a different career path

Anne Smith (nee Spencer) After playing football at school Alan had taken to rugby and played for the Dursley club. One of his team mates was farmer’s son Nicholas Spencer and through him Alan met his sister, Anne. The pair started going out together when Alan was 18 and Anne 17. The relationship continued despite Anne going away to Aberystwyth University for three years to study agricultural economics.

“Our going out days weren’t very romantic.” Anne recalls “Usually Alan would be mending a digger and I’d be sat reading a book. And we’d often have to go out in the middle of the night to fix a puncture on a JCB on site. We got used to being stopped by the police who wanted to know what we were up to.”

By the time she graduated, Anne’s interests had changed and her ambition was to pursue a career in retail management. Unfortunately almost all the graduate training programmes would have involved a move away from the area, which was impossible to contemplate with Alan’s fledgling business. However, a vacancy came up managing the Gloucester branch of Mothercare and Anne got the job. So, Anne ended up working for Mothercare during the day and helping Alan in any way she could in the evenings: “I remember one evening, we had to drive down to site near Bath to pick up a breaker- a big hydraulic attachment for a JCB - that was needed for a hire the next day. When we got there the place was deserted and we found this breaker, which was a heavy bit of kit, was in the middle of the site, surrounded by a three foot deep trench, with no way to get the van to it. We’d come all this way and we weren’t going to leave without this breaker. So, we ended up having to build a bridge out of a couple of scaffolding planks, inch the van across it, load the breaker into the back of the van – I think I broke a few nails doing that – and then hold our breaths as we drove back across the planks.”

From the start Anne took responsibility for doing the payroll and has continued in the job to this day, seeing the number of employees increase from one to over five hundred.

When Alan and Anne were married in August 1984, they didn’t have the longest or most romantic of honeymoons. They were married on a Saturday, had a night away, and then had to go to Buxton where Alan was competing in the motocross championships on the Sunday.

By the Tuesday they were back at work. After the marriage, the pair moved into the cowman’s bungalow owned by Anne’s father’s farm. By now, the business was based in a workshop on the farm and the fleet had grown to six JCBs and three trucks.

Not long after they were married, Anne left her job at Mothercare. The business was taking off and someone had to stay at home to take the phone calls. “I stayed at home all the time” she recalls “It was very boring. I was forever dusting and hoovering just for something to do.

The only time I used get out was if I had to go and get a part for one of the diggers” The couple’s first child, Helen, arrived a year later, with Paul following in 1988, Rebecca in 1991 and Lisa in 1993.

Wilf Spencer Wilf Spencer, Anne’s father, also played a major role in helping the business. Wilf ran Claypits Farm, which he rented from Gloucestershire County Council. After taking over the tenancy from his father, he built the farm up through sheer hard work and later purchased two nearby farms.

Wilf was very generous in his support for the business.

For the first ten years he allowed Alan to base his JCBs and trucks, rent free, in a workshop on the farm at Claypits, despite it being forbidden by his tenancy. He also provided Alan and Anne with their first home.

Wilf took great delight in the growth of the business – “What are you up to this time?” were always his opening words when Alan came to him with news of his latest venture and he was very proud to see Smiths’ trucks out on the road. Wilf passed away in 2014 aged 88.

Pamela Broomfield (nee Smith), Company Secretary When Alan set up the business, his sister Pamela agreed to do the books for him in her spare time - she can remember writing out invoice No. 001.

After doing A-levels, Pamela had left school to join RA Lister in Dursley as a trainee accountant. After a couple of years at Listers, she moved to electrical motor manufacturer Mawdesleys in Dursley. It was the time when desk-top computer systems were just coming on the scene and Pamela was charged with introducing them into the accounts department and received a lot of training in the new technology. Pamela’s boss, Mawdesley’s Accounts Manager, and the IT Manager saw an opportunity in the new technology and left to set up a company selling the systems. Pamela joined them and for 18 months she sold computer systems and did the training. After 18 months and a falling out over her company car, she moved on taking a job with English and American Insurance that was “Pam is phenomenal. She has been a setting up an office in Gloucester. huge support over the years and a one-stop shop for turning ideas into reality.”

In September 1985, as the business became Alan Smith busier, Pamela came to work for Alan full-time, becoming “Smiths Administration”. For the first couple of years she worked out of the spare room at the Smith’s family home, before moving into a Portacabin in the garden.

In the coming years Pamela would play a pivotal role in the growth and success of the company, taking responsibility for almost all the back office functions, including accounts, HR, IT and Company Secretary. At one time, Alan Smith and Colin Roberts (see below) were going to evening classes, studying for their Certificate of Professional Competency, for an HGV operator’s licence. The pair spent rather too much time in the pub and when it came to the exam they both failed. Pamela read the books and notes, took the exam and passed (Alan and Colin failed again) and thus became the official Transport Manager. During the early stages of their growth, she would also run both the Skip Hire and Waste Management Divisions.

Richard “Demolition Dick” Smith Alan’s elder brother Richard left home at 16, before his parents lost the Rose and Crown Inn, to work at Bownhill Farm on Selsley Common. He subsequently went to Hartpury Agricultural College and later became Head Shepherd at Trull Farm near Tetbury. He came to work for Alan in 1983 as a labourer and JCB driver. Later he would go on to be a gang leader, then Quarry Manager.

“He was one of those guys everyone loved” Alan Smith on Richard Smith Richard was a warm-hearted, larger-than-life man with a reputation for being incredibly accident prone. In the early days he rode a motorbike to work on the farm. Racing to work one day, he turned a bend only to find a cattle truck parked in the road with its ramp down.

Unable to stop in time, he shot up the ramp and crashed into the back of the truck, somehow escaping with just a few cuts and bruises.

Once he was sent to pick up a breaker in one of the company vans. All the weight of the heavy breaker ended up at the rear of the van and when Richard set off he found the front wheels where barely in contact with the ground and turning the steering wheel had little or no effect. He rapidly discovered the only way he could steer was by jamming on the brakes to 7

get some weight on the front end. He didn’t crash that time, but he was infamous for failing to apply the handbrake to trucks, tipping over diggers and writing-off company vehicles. After he had rolled yet another van, his workmates kindly welded a wheel to the roof, ready for the next accident. In his wedding speech, Alan thanked Richard for single-handedly doubling the company’s insurance premium. Richard was also famous for shooting the headlight out of his own car by mishandling a loaded shotgun.

Despite the accidents, Richard was a hugely popular man and stayed with Smiths until 2001, when he left to work for DEFRA. Richard overcame bouts of Leukaemia 1989 and 1995, but sadly passed away suddenly in 2011, aged 61.

Paul Beeston, Divisional Manager – Demolition Paul Beeston first met Alan Smith when he joined Uley Motocross Club while he was at Rednock School in Dursley. After doing his O-levels Paul decided to stay on to do A-levels, but he found that the 6th form wasn’t for him and left after his first year. “So, at seventeen I found myself with few qualifications, nothing to do and no plan” recalls Paul.

When Paul bumped into Alan at a motocross meeting and explained his predicament, Alan’s response was “Well, you’d best come and work for me then”. So, in February 1985, Paul joined Smiths as employee number five at a time when the company had just four JCBs. Without a driving licence, Paul couldn’t legally drive the excavators, so initially he did any job that came his way, from digging ditches and sweeping up, to cutting grass and herding cows.

About six months after joining the company Paul passed his test and started driving plant, learning on the job. At the time, Alan had just bought a brand new Toyota Hilux truck that he was very proud of. One winter’s day, shortly after getting his licence, Paul was driving the Hilux, when he hit a patch of ice, skidded off the road and put the new truck through a hedge. “It was a bit tense for a while” Paul says of when he had to break the news to Alan.

Once he had his licence, Paul moved on to driving the JCBs, principally on plant hire jobs. At the time JCBs had a reasonable turn of speed but notoriously bad brakes. Paul can remember driving an old hand-me-down JCB down the hill from Stow-on-the-Wold to Bourton-on-theWater, when it slipped out of gear and started to run away. Despite standing up on the brakes and heaving on the steering wheel for extra traction he couldn’t slow the machine down. In the end the only way he could slow the digger was by lowering the bucket and letting it scrape along the road.

As he gained in experience and confidence, Paul moved from just driving JCBs to leading a gang of four to six operators, then supervising multiple gangs on larger contracts. From there he progressed to being a Contracts Manager before becoming Divisional Manager for Demolition.

Peter Wilcox, Divisional Manager - Construction Around 1986, with the additional equipment and operators he had acquired, Alan started taking on some groundworks contracts – levelling sites, digging foundations and putting in drains – as opposed to just plant hire. The only problem was that pricing the jobs involved a level of expertise in surveying and estimating that Alan didn’t have. So Alan turned to a friend from Dursley Rugby club, Peter Wilcox, to help him out.

Peter was born in Dursley and after attending Rednock School went on to study building at the North Gloucestershire College of Technology.

After gaining an HND, Peter went to work for Moss Construction (now Kier Construction) in Cheltenham as a Surveyor. When Alan needed some jobs pricing he asked Peter if he would help out. “So I ended up working days for Moss and nights and weekends for Alan” recalls Peter.

In what would be the start of a long and very fruitful relationship, Peter also introduced Smiths to Moss. As Smiths started taking on contracts for Moss, Peter found himself supervising Smiths’ teams on site for Moss during the day, then working for Alan, estimating and costing, in the evenings. There is “It’s been a lot of luck that has helped a limit to how long you can serve two masters us on our way ...and being brave” and over the next two years Alan constantly Peter Wilcox lobbied Peter to come and join the company.

Finally, in 1988, Peter left Moss and joined Smiths as employee number six. “For the first few years I just did everything – surveying, estimating, contract management and buying, the lot” recalls Peter. Ironically, the day after he resigned he found himself back on a Moss site, with a Smiths’ hat on.

With Peter on board, Smiths was able to bid for more and bigger contracts and the ground works side of the business took off.

The Great Escape One of the first jobs Alan and Peter Wilcox worked on shortly after Peter joined the company was a site for Cheltenham College. Part of the job involved laying some drains and connecting them to the mains sewer. Unfortunately the sewer was on the far side of the road, and Peter and Alan had forgotten to get a road closure permit, so there was no way they could dig the road up. “We’ll just have to tunnel underneath it” announced Alan. The pair designed and built some small prefabricated frames and as Alan dug out the narrow tunnel by hand, a JCB pushed the frames in behind him to shore up the ceiling. In a scene, reminiscent of The Great Escape, the job ended up with Alan laid flat in the tunnel, digging out the spoil by hand and passing it back, with a stout rope tied to his legs so he could be pulled out in the event of collapse. In the end, the frames held and the drain got connected.

Idris Stephens Idris came to Smiths in 1987 as a truck driver. After 10 years driving he moved into the maintenance workshop, where he took on responsibility for the tyres on all Smiths vehicles. Today, he is responsible for the company’s £200,000 annual spend on tyres.

“He’s a very down to earth boss, there are no airs and graces - he treats everyone exactly the same” Idris on Alan Smith.

Mark Virgo, Construction Contracts Manager Mark joined Smiths in 1987 as a JCB driver, after six years working for Barnwood Construction. Shortly after he joined, Alan bought six brand new “E” registration JCBs and Mark was assigned one of them.

“I remember being chuffed to bits. I used to spend 12 hours a day in the cab, so it was very much home from home and I really wanted to look after it. I’d be setting out at seven o’clock in the morning, driving an hour or an hour and a half to site, doing a day’s work, driving back and not getting home until seven or eight in the evening” Today, Mark manages major groundworks projects across the South-West.

Colin Roberts and Cyril Parker Two other important employees from the early days were Colin Roberts and Cyril Parker. Colin was a mechanic who originally worked for Gloucestershire County Council. At 6’7”, he was the tallest man in the company. “Colin was very close to me and we spent a lot of time together socially.” Alan recalls “He could be trusted with anything and would always do his very best for me. He looked after my motocross bike as well and would always have it ready for me on a Sunday. A top man.”

Cyril Parker was a groundworker and driver, who later progressed to running groundwork gangs. He had a reputation for being hard-working and trustworthy, as well as having a great sense of humour.

1990 – 2000 Growth By 1990, the Smiths fleet had grown to six JCBs, three 360 excavators and four tipper trucks, and with 15 site workers the turnover had reached £1.8m. With Peter Wilcox’s expertise the company was bidding for and winning more and bigger groundworks contracts. Paul Beeston had gained experience and was now leading gangs of six to eight operators on site, and Anne and Pamela were still running the office out of Portacabins in the garden of the bungalow where Alan and Anne lived.

In 1992, to reflect its increased scope, the company was structured into three separate companies; Smith’s Plant Hire Ltd, Boostmore Construction Ltd and HPR Transport ltd.

Construction In 1992 the company bid for and won its first one million pound contract, for the groundworks of the new Honda factory in Swindon. In scale and complexity, it was an order of magnitude greater than anything Smiths had undertaken before and completing the project would stretch the company to the limit. Some of the work was very technical and forced the company to come up with some innovative solutions, such as how to undertake compaction down a 6m deep shaft. The work on site extended over eight months, led by Paul Beeston who was by now supervising several gangs.

Other major projects in the first half of the decade included the Lydney Bypass (1992), Ebley Bypass (1994) and Purton Water Treatment Works (1994).

Another memorable project from this period was Ashchurch Army Camp. All the roads within the camp had to be dug up, the hard-core crushed and the roads re-laid to make them capable of supporting new heavy tank transporters. It was a large project and as work progressed it became apparent that the company had significantly underestimated the work involved and at one stage Peter Wilcox was projecting a £200,000 loss on the job. Luckily, the scope of the work changed and Smiths were able to recoup the losses on the variations.

During the decade the construction division won its first contract to do the groundworks for a new supermarket. This would prove to be a major breakthrough and over the coming years Smiths would complete more than sixty supermarket projects across the South West.

In 1994, Smiths was one of the first companies in England to adopt dual-control laser levelling technology. Mounted on a JCB, the system directly controls the lift and tilt of the machine to achieve very accurate results. Attached to a compact leveller the system enables tolerances as low as +/-5mm to be achieved, providing excellent results for floor slabs and sports pitches.

Transport To support the growing construction business, Smiths continued to invest in the transport fleet and by 1995 the number of trucks had increased from four to seventeen. By the end of the decade it would reach 25.

Plant Hire Throughout the decade Smiths continued to invest in new machines to support the groundworks contracts and expand the plant hire business.

Demolition Division As the groundworks contracts became larger and more complex, many of them involved some element of demolition. By now, Paul Beeston had been promoted to Contracts Manager and was managing two to three sites at a time. As his experience grew he was given the more complex contracts to manage particularly those involving demolition. As demolition became a larger part of the business, it became increasingly difficult to run it through the construction division. As a result, in 1992 Smiths Demolition was set up as a separate company, headed up

by Paul Beeston. One of the first major jobs the new company undertook was the demolition of the historic Gloster Aircraft factory at Brockworth that had produced Hurricanes, Typhoons and Meteor jets during the war. Another major job at the time was demolition of a set of large concrete grain silos at Avonmouth docks.

Alkerton Court In 1994, Smiths purchased a small parcel of land, originally a piggery, and a workshop at Alkerton Court near Eastington, with a view to creating a single site for the whole company.

At the time the administration team were in a business unit at Frampton-on-Severn and the plant hire and transport operations were based at a workshop at Woodend Lane, Cam. In 1996, the vehicle workshop and plant hire business moved to Alkerton Court. Shortly afterwards the administration team followed suit, moving into some “Terrapin� temporary buildings.

In 1998 the 18th century farmhouse and out buildings at Alkerton Court came up for sale and Alan was able to buy the properties. The family moved into the farm house and work started on converting the barns for the company’s offices. Finally, late in 1999 the rapidly growing administration team were able to move into their new offices.

Moreton Valance and the birth of Smiths Waste Management In 1994, Smiths started renting a small parcel of land at the disused aerodrome at Moreton Valance. Initially the land was used for crushing and grading spoil removed from groundworks and demolition sites.

Around this time, Smiths bought an old skip lorry and a couple of skips to help move material around the Moreton Valance site. Some builders saw the skip lorry and asked if Alan if he could do skip hire. The answer was immediately “yes” and the skip hire business was born. It was a timely new venture and one which added to the company’s objective of providing a complete service to the construction industry.

As the skip business started to take off, there was a need for a waste processing facility and in 1995, Smiths installed a home-grown picking and sorting line in a rather run down shed on the Moreton Valance site. Over the next three years the throughput of waste increased significantly and there was a need to expand the facilities. In 1999, the company recycled a whole building to the site - a large steel framed building was dismantled from a demolition site in Gloucester and re-erected at Moreton Valance – providing for a sizeable covered, waste sorting facility.

During the second half of the nineties, growth across all the divisions was substantial. From 1995 to 2000 turnover almost quadrupled from £3.4m to £13.9m

2000 – 2010 Expansion & Survival After 18 years of continual growth, the Smiths group of companies entered the new century in good shape. Turnover for the group had increased to £13.9m and the number of employees had grown to 400.

In 2000, the structure of the business was rationalised. The plant hire, construction, demolition, transport and waste management businesses, which had traded as separate companies, were incorporated as divisions of a single company, Smith’s (Gloucester) Limited.

Construction During the early 2000s, Smiths Construction continued to enjoy rapid growth, with the company working on many of the county’s major infrastructure and development projects, including the redevelopment of Gloucester Cattle Market, the new grandstand at Kingsholm rugby stadium and the M5 Junction 12 redevelopment.

By far the largest and most technically demanding project the company undertook in this period was the Gloucester South-West Bypass. Part of the project involved re-routing a section of the Gloucester and Sharpness canal - digging out a new length of canal, connecting it to the existing canal at both ends then filling in the old section. In all, Smiths moved over 180,000m3 of soil during the work. Once again it was a project that stretched the company to its limits and gave Construction Division Manager, Peter Wilcox, sleepless nights.

In 2005, the company opened an office and depot in Miskin, west of Cardiff, to service construction projects in South Wales.

During the decade Smiths also completed a large number of groundwork projects for new supermarkets, both close to home –Tesco Brockworth, Asda Metz Way and Morrison’s Cheltenham- and further afield – Tesco Llantrisant , Sainsbury’s Penzance and Aldi Norwich.

Jim Swift, Contracts Manager, Wales Jim Swift was brought up in Ross-on-Wye. When he left school in the eighties, he joined his father’s building business. However, the business was hard hit by the recession of 1990-92 and the reduction in work meant Jim had to find a job outside of the company. Going through the phone book, Smiths was one of the first companies he rang and Alan took him on as a JCB driver.

In the coming years, he worked his way up to Gang Leader and then Contracts Manager, and when Alan was looking for a manager to be based at the Cardiff office, Jim volunteered.

Demolition During this period Smiths Demolition undertook a wide range of jobs, both large and small.

Some of the more notable jobs included the 120 year old Victorian grain silos at Avonmouth docks, the main stand at Gloucester Rugby Club and part of the iconic Motorola Building in Swindon that featured in the James Bond film “The World is Not Enough”.

All demolition projects require an asbestos survey and if the material is found, its removal requires specialist processes that can only be undertaken by licensed contractors. Historically, Smiths had had to sub-contract this work. However, in 2005, in what was a landmark for the Division and another example of the “paddle your own canoe” principle in action, Smiths gained its license for asbestos removal and brought the work in-house.

Transport The Transport Division entered the new century with 25 tipper trucks. By 2005, primarily as a result of the growth in the construction business, the fleet had tripled to 77. In 2004, Alan Ball, took over responsibility for the division, with a brief to increase the amount of external work. By 2008, the fleet had reached 120 trucks.

A year later he left school at 17 when he got an offer to manage the hardware store where he’d worked on Saturdays. He then moved on to bricklaying before travelling to Australia for a year. On his return he found a position at the Bymacks furniture factory, where he gained his HGV license. There then followed a number of jobs in transport and warehouse management before he came to work for Smiths in 2001, starting as driver, then managing the skip hire business for a couple of years, before moving into his present role in 2004.

Waste Management Throughout the early 2000s Smiths continued to invest in the Moreton Valance recycling site, taking on more space and installing a purpose built sorting line. In 2003, in another example of building recycling, the company moved a set of portable buildings from a GCHQ demolition site to Moreton Valance to supply the sites offices. Three years later the company invested over £2m in a large-scale trummel sorting line.

Skip Hire The skips business continued to grow rapidly through the early 2000s. In 2003, to better serve the north Gloucestershire and Worcestershire area, the company opened a waste processing station at Tewkesbury. In due course the sales and administration of the skip division moved to offices at this site.

The birth of Smiths Trade Waste In 2007, a company called Y-Waste, offered Smiths “All you have to do is say yes, an option of partnering with them to run a trade then fill in the gaps “ waste collection round for Stroud District Council.

Smiths agreed to trial the partnership for a year. At Alan Smith the end of the year, Smiths felt the partnership was not good business and withdrew. When Y-Waste subsequently withdrew from the contract, the Council approached Smiths who agreed to take on the contract in their own right. The contract worked out and Smiths Trade Waste business was born. Over the coming years the company would take on many more trade waste customers.

The crash of 2008 Up until 2008, Smiths had enjoyed more than twenty six years of almost continuous and fastpaced growth and turnover had reached in excess of £63m. This came to a very sudden halt in the wake of the 2008-9 banking crash. Construction was one of the industries most severely affected by the crash and by early 2009 work in the sector had fallen off a cliff. The impact on Smiths was substantial - just prior to the crash, Peter Wilcox’s Construction Division was running at an annual turnover of £30m, by 2009 this had dropped to less than £12m.

Keeping the business afloat took some drastic measures. As a family business, one of the most painful decisions was to make 27 people redundant. Temporary contracts weren’t renewed and together with natural wastage, employee numbers dropped from 474 to 376 over the year. Alan and Pamela travelled to every depot and every site to meet all the remaining employees to give them the option of taking a 10% pay cut, something they all agreed to do. When cash flow was particularly difficult the Divisional Managers deferred their pay and many of the plant operators accepted a four-day week. The Miskin office was closed, ten trucks sold, orders for new plant cancelled and payment holidays negotiated with finance companies. However, Alan and the management team were determined to preserve the core capabilities of the company so that it would be able to take advantage of the recovery when it came. Every cloud has a silver lining and the crash had the effect of encouraging Smiths to put more effort into developing the waste management business and improving cost control across the company.

James Moreton One person who was a great help to Smiths in weathering the storm was Chartered Accountant James Moreton. A large man with a big personality and a loud laugh, James was originally recommended to Smiths in 2000 by Barclays, the company’s bankers at the time.

Over the subsequent years he proved to be an invaluable source of advice, support and wise counsel for the company and family alike. He helped with a great many things, including implementation of a new financial computer system to suit the newly formed Smith’s (Gloucester) Ltd and preparation of the monthly management accounts, ensuring the company had the information to control its expanding operations. Once the in-house team were in place to produce accounts, James remained involved with the company always bringing an objective view to any matter that arose. “He was one of my greatest allies when things got tough” says Pam Broomfield. Sadly, James died suddenly in December 2014.

Construction Following the 2008-9 crash, work in the Construction Division slowly recovered. Again, Smiths were undertaking the groundworks for some of the major projects of the period including Gloucester Academy, the Princess Royal Stand at Cheltenham Racecourse, Racecourse Cotswold BMW and the Brewery Cheltenham. Demolition Since 2011, some of the landmark jobs completed by the Demolition Division include the firedamaged ex-Norville factory in Gloucester, part of the Regent Arcade in Cheltenham and the Tote Stand at Cheltenham Racecourse. Today, the Division employs 40 site workers and 12 contract management and administration staff, with a turnover of over £5m. One of the largest and most technically demanding demolition projects Smiths has undertaken to date is Cathedral Square in Worcester. The project, worth over £800,000, was particularly challenging due to the restricted site, the complex nature of the structure and the close proximity of other buildings and live pedestrian walkways that had to be protected. An extra long reach machine was needed as part of the site was on top of a basement roof that could not support an excavator.

Transport By 2016, the Smiths Transport fleet had risen to 125 lorries, making it the largest off its kind in the county.

Thanks to Alan Ball’s efforts, external work now accounts for or over 75% of the division’s division work. Smiths trucks are involved in many of the county’s major construction projects, typically removing soil and bringing back aggregates. The division’s customers range from blue chip house builders and construction firms, to jobbing local builders.

Plant Hire Smiths Plant Hire aims to offer the best hire fleet and the best service in the south-west south of England.

The fleet of over 200 machines includes; excavators, bulldozers, rollers, crushers and screeners, access equipment (scissor lifts and cherry pickers) and loadalls. The aim is to provide everything a client needs for a site, so the hire fleet extends to welfare blocks and hand tools.

Gerry Fehily, Plant Hire Divisional Manager Gerry was brought up on his father’s service station in West Cork, where he gained his mechanical skills.

When he left school he ran his own business with a few trucks and excavators. In 2004 he came across to England “for the craic” and found a job with Smiths, initially driving low-loaders. Gradually, as he gained more experience of plant he took on more and more responsibility. In 2010, he returned to West Cork, to build a house, but came back to Smiths in 2012, when Alan asked him to take on the Plant Hire Division.

Waste Management & Recycling Today, the Moreton Valance re--cycling site extends to over 16 acres and in 2015 processed 140,000 tonnes of waste from Smiths’ sites, the skip and trade waste businesses business and other contracts. Of this waste over 90% was recycled. Managed by Ian Watson, the t facility produces a wide range of recycled material streams including, ferrous and non ferrous metals, plastics, wood, paper, cardboard, cardboard top soil and hardcore.

Peter Jukes, Divisional Manager, Waste & Recycling After leaving school Peter completed an apprenticeship, before joining the RAF, where he served for 15 years, years specialising in logistics and mountain rescue. On leaving the RAF he initially worked as driver for Christian Salvasen, before moving into management. Over the next ten years he took on n a series of increasingly senior positions in waste management and distribution, before joining Smiths Waste Management as Compliance Manager in 2008.

Ian Watson, Depot Manager, Moreton Valance After attending Archway school in Stroud, Ian Watson worked as an apprentice mechanic. mechanic He then worked at a number of local garages before moving into car valeting. At the time, his brother was working as an HGV driver for Smiths and in 1997 Ian joined the company as a labourer at Moreton Valance. He learned to drive the different items of plant onsite and in due course was promoted to foreman. He then obtained his HGV licence and for 12 months drove a skip hook lorry. As the yard at Moreton Valance expanded he returned as a foreman, before being promoted to one of two managers running the site.

Following another promotion in 2012, 2012 Ian now has overall responsibility bility for the Moreton Valance site, one of the largest of its type in the South-West.

Skip Hire & Trade Waste aste Trade Waste From its beginnings in 2007, Smiths’ Trade Waste business has grown rapidly and now services over 2,450 customer sites across Gloucestershire, Bristol, Worcestershire and South Wales. It now has 16 collection vehicles and equipment to suit every size of job, job, from 240 litre wheelie bins to 16 yard rear end loaded skips. The company continues to invest in new equipment, buying 600 new wheelie bins in 2015 alone.

He left school at 16 to work in the Bymacks furniture factory, where he gained his HGV licence. He then moved into the retail sector, rising to be Sales Training Manager for DFS. In 2001, in a change of direction Adam came to work for Smiths, initially as a driver before moving to skip operations and then subsequently to sales in 2004.

In 2007 Adam took a break to go and live in Spain for six months. He returned to the skip business and was made Divisional Manager in 2011. “Level headed, very fair and with his feet on the ground.

Tom Broomfield, Sales Manager, Skip Hire & Trade Waste While he was at school, Pamela Broomfield’s son Tom worked in the yard at Eastington during his holidays.

When he left school his original ambition was to be a PE teacher. However after one term of a Sports Education degree he decided it wasn’t for him and left the course.

At something of a loose end, he came to work for Smiths as a bin man on the second of the company’s trade waste runs. After a year on the bins he progressed to the weighbridge at Tewkesbury. A year later he moved into a junior post in the sales team and has been promoted twice since then.

“It’s not work, it’s life” is Tom’s view on his job at Smiths.

Simon Allen, Operations Manager, Skip Hire & Trade Waste Simon joined Smiths in 2007 as a skip lorry driver. After two years driving he was brought into the Tewkesbury office to do the skip routings. He then moved to do a similar job at Moreton Valance. At the time he could see the potential in Trade Waste and was keen to work in the new business. Soon after he got his wish and moved into an operational role in Trade Waste. From there he progressed to running the Skip Hire and Trade Waste operations across the Tewkesbury, Moreton Valance, Avonmouth and Cardiff bases.

Event Waste Management In 2010, Smiths identified Event Waste Management as an opportunity that matched the company’s expertise and resources. In 2011, in its first year in the sector, the company won contracts to provide waste management services for 20 events. The largest of these was the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh. The job involved, deploying 600 wheelie bins across the site, providing a team of 30 litter pickers permanently on site, supplying three refuse collection vehicles and removing over 180 tonnes of waste from the site

Since then the team have provided waste management services to a large number of events including the Game Fair, the 2014 Tour de France Depart in Yorkshire, 2014 Gloucester Tall Ships Race and the Cheltenham Festival.

Smiths Motorcycle Racing Alan Smith has had a life-long interest in motorcycles. In his teens and twenties he was a member of Uley Motocross Club and rose to be one of the top ten amateur riders in the country.

The company first became involved in racing in 2010 when, three races in to the Superbike series, the sponsorship of a local rider, Dan Cooper, fell through.

When approached, Smiths agreed to take over sponsorship of the team for the remainder of the season.

Based on the 2010 experience Alan took the decision to set up a Smiths Racing team to compete in the 2011 series. The team fielded three riders - Luke Mossey, Dan Cooper and Alan Smith riding Motocross Matt Whitman - all riding Triumph Daytona 675Rs in the Supersport class. The riders finished in 7th, 8th and 12th position respectively.

In 2012, the team fielded four bikes; three in the Supersport class and one in the Superstock class Smiths’ rider Glen Richards won the Supersport championship with Billy McConnell coming third.

In 2013 Smiths Racing were awarded Official Factory Triumph Team status. Riders Billy McConnell and Glen Richards finished 3rd and 8th respectively in the British Supersport championship. The team also competed in two rounds of the World Supersport series.

2014 was a busy and successful year for the team.

They retained the factory support of Triumph and appointed Billy McConnell and Graeme Gowland as riders for the Supersport series. Overcoming major logistics challenges, the team travelled to Phillip Island, Australia, to compete in the first race of the World Supersport series. For the first time the team competed in international road races entering riders Gary Johnson and Michael Rutter in the Ireland NW200 race and the Isle of Man TT. The riders took third and sixth positions in Ireland, with Gary winning the TT. To end a great season, Billy McConnell lifted the British Supersport Championship with Graeme Gowland coming in third.

In 2015, Smiths Racing entered riders Jake Dixon in the Supersport series and Billy McConnell in the Superbike Series. Dixon came 3rd with McConnell coming in 15th. Guy Martin joined the team for the TT, coming in 3rd.

For the 2016 series, the team switched to BMW bikes and appointed riders Jakub Smrz and Howie Mainwaring in the Superbike class.

The racing team is run by Manager, Rebecca Smith and Head Engineer, Jason Jones, assisted by a number of volunteers. Jason has been with the team since 2010 and has been a fundamental part of the development of Smiths Racing.

The Next Generation When asked what he is most proud of, Alan Smith’s answer is “My family”. He has always believed that his children should be free to choose what they want to do and should not feel any pressure to join the business. So, he is particularly pleased that all four children have chosen to work in the business and see their future within it.

Helen Lane (nee Smith) One of Helen’s earliest memories is of visiting the offices at the back of the bungalow and swinging on Peter Wilcox’s tie. After completing her education at St Peter’s school in Gloucester, Helen went to work in the Aviator Cafe at Staverton Airport (Alan and a friend had bought the cafe on an impulse when they were learning to fly), which she ended up managing for a year. Subsequently, she moved into the office at Smiths where she worked in credit control and took on responsibility for administering the fuel system for the company’s 400 plus vehicles. With three young children, Helen now works part-time.

Paul Smith Heavy plant and trucks are probably in Paul’s DNA. At age six he could often be found on Merv Tilling’s knees in a JCB helping him out on the controls. When he was nine, he and Alan, were thrown off a site in Cheltenham after the site manager found Paul at the controls of a JCB, loading spoil into trucks.

“Hated every minute of it” was Paul’s verdict on school and when he reached 16 he left as soon as he could. He was too young to work with Smiths on construction sites so he went to work for an agricultural contractor and set up a small business supplying firewood. At 18 he returned to work full time on the family farm. After three years on the farm he joined the waste division of Smiths, working at Moreton Valance, where he helped set up the scrap metal facility. After five years at Moreton Valance he moved to Alkerton Court to join the plant hire division. More recently, as Alan takes a step back, Paul has been taking on more of the day-to-day responsibility for running the business.

Rebecca Smith Rebecca’s memories of her childhood are being conscious of how hard her father worked.

She can remember Alan coming up to read her a story and promptly falling asleep. She can also remember going for days out in a truck with all four of the children in the bed at the back of the cab.

Rebecca attended Ribston Hall High School in Gloucester before studying Geography at Swansea University. In 2011, while she was still at Swansea, Alan asked Rebecca if she would take on managing the Smiths racing team “I “ think the idea was to get me used to managing in an all male environment “ she says. So in addition addi to studying for her finals Rebecca found herself running a motorcycle racing team. She is now responsible for all aspects of the team’s management including relationships with sponsors, riders and the logistics of getting the riders, equipment and support pport staff to the thirteen race venues across the country.

Lisa Smith Lisa went to Ribston Hall High School before completing her A-levels at Downfield Sixth Form.

Form She then went to Bath Spa University to study Business and Management.

After completing her degree in 2015 Lisa knew she wanted to work in events management and in particular she had her sights set on being a wedding planner. So, it was natural for her to joins Smiths events team. She started at the bottom, picking up litter at events e over the summer. She now helpss manage the logistics of getting up to 400 bins, 30 staff and a range of vehicles to the events and supervising the on-site on teams. Lisa also manages Smiths’ charity projects.

The Farm

Farming has always been Alan Smith’s first love. As a boy, from rom the age of six, he spent his spare time working on the farms around Nympsfield. In the late eighties,, as the business took off, he was able to buy a parcel of 85 acres of land, off Tinkley Lane, part of one of the farms he had worked on as boy.. Over the subsequent years the family steadily added to the acreage until today the farm covers some 1,800 acres - around 600 of which are owned and the remainder rented. Managed by Kirsten Kirs Plume, Paul Smith’s fiancée, the he farm is primarily a beef operation, with around 800 head of cattle.

During periods when the plant hire or construction businesses were quiet there was always work for the operators on the farm. The farm has another connection to family and the business - the ashes of Alan’s brother Richard Smith and Merv Tilling are buried on one of the fields overlooking a picturesque valley.

As he gradually steps back from the day-to-day running of the business, Alan’s ambition is to concentrate full-time time on the farm.

“II don’t ever want to stop working, working but this is what I want to do in the future. future There’s something about working the land and raising animals that’s in my blood.”
