THE HOME: The home, sited on 2.5 acres along world-famous 17-Mile Drive less than a half-mile from The Lodge at Pebble Beach. The land for the home was gifted by Pebble Beach founder Samuel F. B. Morse to his good friend, renowned American watercolor artist, Francis McComas. The home, built in 1925 was designed by Clarence A. Tantau, a San Francisco architect who also designed Monterey Peninsula Country Club, the Holman Ranch residence in Carmel Valley, the remodel of the historic Del Monte Hotel in Monterey, and many historic residences in the San Francisco Bay area. The residence was completely restored, renovated and updated in 2011 by highly respected Carmel Valley contractor, B. Jaeger., Inc. FRANCIS MCCOMAS: Francis McComas was born and studied in Australia. In 1898 McComas left Australia, working his way to San Francisco where he studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute. In 1912 he moved to Carmel and a year later was one of only 3 California artists invited to exhibit at the pivotal New York Armory Show. McComas was a master watercolorist, whose works hang in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the De Young Museum in San Francisco. The well lit great room in the center of the house was utilized as his studio.

INTERIOR FEATURES: ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS  The large oak fireplace in the great hall is from a 17th century Belgian castle.  The paneling in the great hall is from the Guggenheim Apartment Building on Fifth Avenue in New York City.  The faux book doors in the meditation room were purchased from the estate of Junius Morgan, nephew of J.P. Morgan.  The lighting fixtures throughout the house come from various George Washington Smith houses around Pasadena.  The 19th Century oak paneling off the kitchen was imported by Westland of London.  The cast iron window in the laundry room came from the Philadelphia bank building.  The star plaster window in master bedroom is an exact replica of the same Moorish star window in the Carmel Mission.  Newly added conservatory above master bedroom with view of Carmel Point and Carmel Valley beyond. Has 19th century limestone fireplace from Westland of London and custom bronze framed clerestory windows.  Hand finished custom Douglas fir flooring.  Custom beveled glass windows in the kitchen and meditation room.  Creative plaster architectural details throughout.
