The African market comes of age

Africa, primo mercato del Made in Italy Africa and the Middle East have become the new El Dorado for brick and roof tile machinery manufacturers. Thanks to booming demand in these markets, the Italian brick and tile machinery producers were able to achieve a strong overall export performance in 2012 and consequently post double-figure growth in total turnover.

In reality, Italian domestic sales also appear to have finally stabilised (up by a timid 2.7% in 2012), halting the downward slide that began in 2008 and brought losses of more than 60 million euros in 4 years.

In the presence of a stagnant domestic market (in this connection, see the report by Giovanni D’Anna on the Italian heavy clay industry published in this issue), exports remain the real resource of the plant and machinery sector and have now reached an 87% share of total turnover. In 2012 they generated revenues of 130 million euros (14.5% up on 2011), maintaining the recovery that began with the 8.9% growth posted the previous year.

Against this backdrop, the African and Middle Eastern markets appear to have fi-

nally come of age, with sales of Italian technology soaring by 111% in Africa (predominantly North Africa) and 105% in the Middle East.

As a result of this latest growth, the Maghreb region is now the biggest market for Italian heavy clay machinery (with sales of 52 million euros, corresponding to 35% of total turnover and 40% of exports). Although the Middle East is a smaller market in terms of absolute values (11.2 million euros in 2012), it has almost doubled its share of total exports from 5% to 9%, and further expansion is expected given the strong demand for building materials in countries such as Saudi Arabia. One interesting development is Saudi Ceramic Group’s new project to enter the brick and tile sector, discussed in this issue.

Another region that has consolidated its position amongst the leading markets for Italian technology is non-EU Europe. Last year the region became the second largest market for Italian machinery following 63% growth in sales, reaching 20 million euros and for the first time overtaking sales within (JF) the EU.

Africa e Medio Oriente nuovi Eldorado per le aziende costruttrici di impianti per laterizi?

Per certo, è grazie a loro se nel 2012 le esportazioni di macchine “Made in Italy” per la produzione di mattoni e tegole hanno potuto segnare una decisa crescita complessiva, e il fatturato totale di settore registrare un incremento a doppia cifra rispetto al 2011.

In realtà, anche le vendite sul mercato domestico pare si siano finalmente stabilizzate (nel 2012 hanno segnato un timido +2,7% sul 2011), interrompendo quella curva discendente iniziata nel 2008 che ha visto sfumare oltre 60 milioni di euro in 4 anni.

In presenza di un mercato domestico decisamente asfittico (si veda al riguardo la relazione di D’Anna sull’industria nazionale del laterizio pubblicata in questo numero), la vera risorsa del comparto degli impianti e delle macchine rimangono le vendite oltre confine, che hanno raggiunto ormai un’incidenza sul fatturato totale dell’87%. Nel 2012 hanno generato un volume d’affari di 130 milioni di euro (+14,5% sul 2011), confermando la risalita iniziata con il +8,9% messo a segno l’anno precedente.

E in questo quadro, a brillare sono proprio i mercati africa-

ni e mediorientali, che l’anno scorso hanno visto esplodere la domanda di tecnologia italiana: +111% le vendite di impianti in Africa (in realtà soprattutto in Nord Africa) e +105% quelle destinate al Medio Oriente.

Con questo nuovo exploit, il Maghreb è diventato la prima area di vendita per i costruttori italiani di macchine per laterizio (52 milioni di euro il fatturato realizzato qui, con un’incidenza del 35% sul fatturato totale e del 40% sull’export). L’area mediorientale, in valori assoluti ancora non altrettanto significativa (11,2 milioni di euro nel 2012), quasi raddoppia la sua quota sull’export totale, passando dal 5 al 9%, e promette un’ulteriore espansione data la forte domanda di materiali per edilizia in Paesi come l’Arabia Saudita. Interessante, in questo contesto, il nuovo progetto di ingresso nel settore dei laterizi di Saudi Ceramic Group che descriviamo in questo numero.

Un’altra area si rafforza tra i maggiori mercati della tecnologia italiana, ed è quella dei Paesi Europei Extra-UE, l’anno scorso secondo mercato per i costruttori italiani: con un incremento del 63% sul 2011, le vendite hanno raggiunto i 20 milioni di euro superando per la prima volta quelle realizzate  nei mercati UE.

With the aim of bringing the excellence of Italian heavy clay technology to the heart of South America, and in particular to Brazil, Sacmi took part in the ceramics and heavy clay exhibition Expocer in Curitiba, State of Paraná, from 26 to 29 June 2013. At the show, Sacmi Heavy Clay presented its comprehensive range of offerings aimed at a constantly expanding industry with ever higher demands in terms of plant quality and performance. Backed by its extensive sales network and incountry production facility Sacmi do Brasil, the Group showcased its entire product range, from tried and tested technologies through to highly innovative solutions such as the application of robotics to

production processes. It also presented new developments in drying and firing including fast cycle solutions and roof tile roller drying and firing using both wet and dry pressing techniques. The importance of the South American market for Sacmi is also highlighted by its participation in the 42nd Encontro Nacional da Indústria de Cerâmica Vermelha (Recife, 25 to 28 October 2013), the most important event in the region which attracts large numbers of industry professionals year after year.

At the end of 2012, the prestigious brick and tile manufacturer Wienerberger commissioned Sabo SA to modernise the wet material handling line at the facility in Solymar, Hungary. Installed in March 2013, the plant has a production capacity of 550 tons/ day of clay blocks (PTH 44, PTH 38, PTH 10/50 etc.). It is fully automated and includes empty pallet handling, robots for wet material loading and transport on dryer cars. Nello specifico i trasportatori posizionano i pallet vuoti nella zona di caricamento dove un robot, dotato di una pinza speciale, provvede a caricare il materiale umido. Il carico viene eseguito con movimenti precisi sincronizzati alla fase di taglio del materiale. Dopo aver caricato il materiale umido, i pallet vengono convogliati da una serie di trasportatori ai carri essiccatoio.

From 25 to 28 October, the city of Recife, Brazil will be holding two prestigious events simultaneously: the 42nd National Meeting of the Heavy Clay Industry and the 16th Expoanicer exhibition of machinery, equipment, products and services for the heavy clay sector. Besides showcasing the finest technologies for heavy clay production, the events aim to promote a debate between business leaders, researchers, public and private institutions and Brazilian and international consumer organisations. They will feature a packed programme of initiatives including technological forums and guided tours of the roof tile manufacturer Ceramica Kitambar (Caruaru) and brick manufacturer Cerâmica Bom Jesus (Paudalho). In 2012, Expoanicer, the sector’s largest exhibition in Latin America, hosted 81 Brazilian brands and 18 international brands from countries including Italy, Greece, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Colombia, Germany, the United States, China and France. The exhibitors generated a total of around 43 million Reais (15 million euro) in business, 5 million Reais more than at previous years’ shows. The 2013 show is expected to be an even bigger success because the northeast of the country is home to more than 1,500 heavy-clay companies and has planned large-

Keller, a division of the Legris Industries group, took part in the exhibition Buildexpo in Nairobi, Kenya from 4 to 6 May this year. A key presence at the stand was that of the division’s company Morando, which has prestigious clients in the region. Now in its sixteenth edition, the exhibition was an important event for the economic development of Equatorial Africa and was strongly attended by visitors from various African states interested in

scale investments over the next few years. The ancillary events will include a competition for talented young people with the aim of promoting research into new materials and housing solutions. Promoted by Anicer and supported

by Associaçao Brasileira de Ceramica (Brazilian Ceramics Association), the award will go to projects that stand out for their innovation and sustainability. The no less important João de Barro award will be presented to innovative, concrete projects that aim to improve the quality of the industry and promote its development in Brazil. Each year awards are presented in the following categories: best stand, personality, best supplier, best institution and best ceramic producer. Represented by Anicer, the Brazilian brick and tile industry comprises 4.8% of the civil construction sector and generates around 300,000 direct jobs and 900,000 indirect jobs. According to the IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística), the sector is made up of 6,903 companies with an annual turnover of more than 18 billion Reais (around 6 billion euro).

Monthly production amounts to more than 4 billion bricks and blocks and 1.3 billion roof tiles.

Dal 25 al 28 ottobre la città di Recife, Brasile, ospiterà due prestigiosi eventi in contemporanea: il 42° Meeting Nazionale dell’Industria Laterizi ed Expoanicer, fiera dedicata a macchinari, attrezzature, prodotti e servizi per il settore laterizio, giunta alla sedicesima edizione. Gli eventi, oltre a mettere in mostra le migliori tecnologie per laterizi, hanno lo scopo di promuovere il dibattito tra operatori, ricercatori, istituzioni pubbliche e private, organizzazioni brasiliane, internazionali e dei consumatori, con un fitto programma di appuntamenti suddivisi tra forum tecnologici e visite tecniche guidate alle aziende Ceramica Kitambar, (a Caruaru), produttore di tegole, e Cerâmica Bom Jesus (a Paudalho), produttore di mattoni.

Expoanicer, diventata ormai punto di riferimento irrinunciabile per tutta l’area dell’America Latina, nel 2012 ha registrato la presenza di 81 brand brasiliani e 18 marchi internazionali da paesi come Italia, Grecia, Austria, Spagna, Portogallo, Colombia, Germania, Stati Uniti, Cina e Francia.

Complessivamente, gli espositori hanno generato un giro d’affari di circa 43 milioni di

Tra gli eventi collaterali in calendario, un concorso rivolto a giovani talenti con lo scopo di promuovere la riflessione e la ricerca su nuovi materiali e soluzioni abitative.

L’evento, promosso da Anicer e supportato dall’Associaçao Brasileira de Ceramica, premierà i progetti che si distinguono per innovazione e sostenibilità. Non meno importante il Premio João de Barro, un riconoscimento a coloro che contribuiscono con iniziative concrete e innovative a migliorare la qualità e lo sviluppo del settore in Brasile, che ogni anno viene assegnato alle seguenti categorie: miglior stand, personalità, miglior fornitore, migliore istituzione e migliore ceramica.

Rappresentata da Anicer, l’industria brasiliana del laterizio copre il 4,8% del settore delle costruzioni civili e genera circa 300.000 posti di lavoro diretti e 900.000 indiretti.

Secondo l’IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística) il comparto è costituito da 6.903 aziende, con fatturato annuo superiore a 18 miliardi di Reais. (circa 6 miliardi di euro) La produzione mensile è di oltre 4 miliardi di mattoni e 1,3 miliardi di tegole.

Bongioanni Stampi recently strengthened its presence in Algeria with some major orders for both new and existing plants. In the Bordj Bou Arredij district, it has supplied leading sector companies such as Briquelive Bourhali, Ardj Bordj Guerrouache and Sarl Mntb Meshas with the latest multi-exit extrusion equipment consisting of dedicated pressure heads and Omega and Gamma Plus model conical extrusion dies.

These dies are equipped with frames and cores made of special BST01 and BST02 materials for high wear and corrosion resistance for B8, B12 and Hourdi formats. All components of the Omega extrusion die in direct contact with the clay are made from anti-abrasion material. In particular, the columns of the core-support bridge were made entirely using an NC system with a square cross-section to ensure the highest precision and to allow for the use of special materials available only in sheet form. Furthermore, the bridges feature high-thickness chrome plating. One aspect of particular interest is the outstanding performance of the new lubrication system for the externally controlled brakes

brick; and a complete clay block grinding line. These new technologies were developed by adapting Cismac’s existing systems and adding new devices to achieve the highest possible product performance. During the visit the Italian and international delegations reaffirmed their view of the company as a reliable partner capable of meeting the needs of increasingly demanding customers.

The new plant has enabled Röben to further expand its range of insulating bricks in response to the growing demand for building materials with high thermal insulation. The range of common bricks filled with mineral wool now extends from the thermo-brick TV 7 with a thermal conductivity of only 0.07 W/mK to the TV 10 with a thermal conductivity of 0.10 W/mK. The air chambers in the bricks are filled with mineral wool and therefore offer additional integrated thermal insulation. The plant, which was brought into operation in a very short space of time, has an effective output of 800 filled bricks per hour and combines conventional and robot technology to operate as a standalone station. The Portuguese manufacturer Umbelino Monteiro, part of the Etex Group (Belgium), has placed a new order with Lingl to expand the roof tile plant at Meirinhas built by Lingl in 2002.

The order includes retrofitting and extension of the machinery as well as the upgrade of the control system from S5 to S7. The key aspect of the order,

however, is the decoupling of the setting and unloading installation, where an additional cassette storage device has been installed as a buffer. The decoupling of the two systems brings greater flexibility and an overall increase in plant efficiency.

The supply of two new fired waste milling lines to the El Khayyat Red Brick Co. group in Saudi Arabia brings to 7 the number of plants supplied to the group by Manfredini & Schianchi in the last decade. The plants are currently being installed at the facilities in Al Kharji and Sudair and will come into operation in October 2013. They are equipped with Slammer hammer mills for grinding fired brick and tile rejects. They also have a rugged structure consisting of 80% special wear-resistant metals. The installation can accept incoming pieces of up to 250 mm in diameter. It has a produc-

The project, carried through by the Bedeschi group’s expert internal engineering team, had to achieve a sufficient degree of product firing uniformity to meet the extremely high standards set by the customer. A tale proposito sono state studiate delle soluzioni innovative legate alla disposizione e alla tipologia dei bruciatori installati che permettono un’ottimale gestione dei flussi all’interno del forno. Inoltre, grazie alla tipologia di carico che prevede la possibilità di distanziare il materiale, si è ottenuta un’ottima qualità delle superfici e una notevole riduzione del ciclo di cottura e dei consumi. Il forno, gestito da un sistema di supervisione e controllo computerizzato che permette una gestione completamente automatica, è stato dimensionato per ottenere una notevole produzione con un ciclo di cottura di 16 ore con garanzia di funzionamento ad alta temperatura per raggiungere le colorazioni richieste.

The Bedeschi group has reported outstanding performance in Saudi Arabia, where two leading groups have placed their trust in the Italian company and its hundred years of experience.

Saudi Ceramics, a leading ceramic tile producer which now also operates in the heavy clay sector, has commissioned Bedeschi to develop an innovative raw materials handling system (see page 35).

For the Al Watania Group, based in Al Hair, Bedeschi has supplied the preparation and storage lines as well as the extrusion system for the new brick plant. Designed for a production of 1,000 tons of fired products per day, the plant will be equipped with latest generation machines that combine high output with excellent raw materials management. The line features the installation of box feeders with metal and rubber belts required for effective management of the final mixture. Once batched, the material passes through a disintegrator and two roller mills to achieve a uniform particle size, after which it is conveyed to a

double-shaft mixer without grids.

The next step is storage in silos, where the mixture is perfectly homogenised by means of an extraction system with BEL C type bridge excavator. The extruder line is equipped with a storage box that feeds a fine roller mill specially designed to achieve a uniform particle size. The mixture then passes through a doubleshaft mixer where the necessary quantity of water is added for the subsequent extrusion phase, which takes place in a BED 750 SLS type extruder. The plant is managed automatically by means of a dedicated software specially designed for this kind of plant.

The line sets a new benchmark for brick production in Algerian in terms of dimensions and productivity, technical solutions and the materials and components used.

The plant reached full-scale operation in July and has a production capacity of 250,000,000 bricks/year, equivalent to 1,500 tons/ day.

pianto sarà dotato di macchine di ultima concezione che garantiscono l’elevata produzione associata a un’ottimale gestione delle materie prime. La linea prevede l’installazione di cassoni dosatori con tappeto metallico e in gomma, necessari per la corretta gestione della miscela finale. Una volta dosato, il materiale passa attraverso un disintegratore e due laminatoi che garantiscono una granulometria costante e uniforme della miscela ed è poi convogliato in un mescolatore bialbero a bocca libera. Il passaggio successivo è lo stoccaggio nel silos, dove avviene una perfetta omogeneizzazione grazie al sistema di ripresa con escavatore a ponte tipo BEL C. La linea trafila è dotata di un cassone polmone che alimenta un laminatoio finitore studiato appositamente per ottenere una granulometria costante. La miscela passa poi attraverso un mescolatore bialbero nel quale viene gestito l’apporto d’acqua necessario alla fase di estrusione tramite una mattoniera di tipo BED 750 SLS. La gestione dell’impianto avviene in maniera automatica attraverso un software appositamente studiato per questa tipologia di impianti.

cioli. La linea, per dimensioni e produttività, nonché per le soluzioni tecniche adottate e i materiali e la componentistica impiegati, rappresenta un nuovo punto di riferimento nella produzione di laterizi in Algeria. A regime dallo scorso luglio, l’impianto ha una capacità produttiva di 250.000.000 mattoni/anno, pari a più di 1.500 ton/giorno.

Macchine per laterizi in ripresa Following an essentially stable 2011, the Italian heavy clay machinery industry reported 12.9% growth in sales in 2012 to reach a total turnover of 149 million euro. This consisted of 130 million euro of exports and 19 million euro of domestic Italian sales.

These results, taken from the 21st Acimac Statistical Survey, still fall far short of pre-crisis levels (42.2% down on 2008) but offer encouraging signs, including 14.5% export growth and a timid 2.7% rise in domestic sales.

Dopo un 2011 di sostanziale stabilità, l’industria italiana delle macchine per laterizio archivia il 2012 con un incremento delle vendite del 12,9% registrando un fatturato totale pari a 149 milioni di euro, di cui 130 milioni provenienti dall’export e 19 milioni dalle vendite in Italia.

I risultati, tratti dalla 21° Indagine Statistica Acimac, pur mantenendosi ancora lontani dai picchi pre-crisi (-42,2% rispetto al 2008), offrono segnali incoraggianti: le esportazioni sono cresciute del 14,5% e il mercato interno segna un timido +2,7%.

Exports accounted for 87.2% of total turnover and remained the sector’s real strength, fuelled largely by strong demand in North Africa. This region saw its sales double to 52 million euro (40% of total exports) to become the Italian heavy clay machinery industry’s top export market.

Second place in the rankings was occupied by non-EU European countries with a turnover of 20 million euro (up 62.7% on 2011) and a 15.3% share, followed by the EU with 19.4 million euro (37.6% down on 2011), 14.9% of the total.

The South American market fell back a few places with respect to 2011 with sales of 14 million euro (down 27.7% on 2011), while the Middle East showed an excellent performance with sales of 11.2 million euro (105% up on 2011), 8.6% of total export turnover.

Sales in Asia (not including China and Taiwan) dropped to 9 million euro (down 28.6% on 2011), while smaller contributions came from North America, the China/Taiwan area and Oce-

Types of machinery With the exception of plant and machinery for earth preparation, which dropped to 30 million euro compared to 35.5 million euro in 2011 but maintained the highest percentage share of total turnover (20.2%), the other main families of machinery all saw increases in sales. Storage and handling systems generated a turnover of 27.7 million euro (16.7% up on 2011), followed by plant for firing (23.3 million euro, +36.2%), shaping and extrusion (22.3 million euro +16.5%) and drying (20.2 million euro, +29.9%).

The Italian ceramic machinery industry

L’industria italiana delle macchine per ceramica

The Italian heavy clay machinery industry is one of the six individual sectors making up the Italian ceramic machinery industry, which is represented by the national trade association Acimac (the others are machinery for tiles, sanitaryware, tableware, refractories and various ceramics).

Heavy clay machinery’s contribution to the industry’s total turnover rose to 8.9% (7.8% in 2011), compared to the 79.5% share held by sales of tile machinery (1,325.2 million euro, 5.7% down on 2011).

In spite of this slight fall, the Italian ceramic machinery industry as a whole posted satisfactory results.

According to figures published in Acimac’s 21st statistical survey, the industry’s total turnover fell by 4.4% with respect to 2011 to reach 1,667.4 million euro. This decline was largely due to a 7.4% drop in exports, which at 1,288.2 million euro still made up 77.3% of total turnover. The Italian domestic market performed strongly with 7.3% growth in sales to a total of 379 million euro (compared to 353 million euro in 2011).

This marked the second consecutive yearly increase, although the figures were still far short of the pre-crisis levels of 2008 (-22.6%).

Il comparto dei costruttori italiani di macchine per laterizio è uno dei sei settori che compongono l’industria italiana delle macchine per ceramica (rappresentata dall’associazione nazionale di categoria Acimac), insieme ai comparti delle macchine per piastrelle, sanitari, stoviglieria, refrattari e ceramica varia.

Il contributo del settore “macchine per laterizi” sul fatturato totale dell’industria sale all’8,9% (7,8% nel 2011) a fronte del 79,5% rappresentato dalla vendita di macchine per piastrelle, che genera un giro d’affari di 1.325.2 milioni di euro (-5,7% sul 2011).

Nel complesso, i risultati dell’intera industria italiana delle macchine per ceramica, nonostante un lieve calo, si possono definire soddisfacenti.

Secondo i dati raccolti dalla 21a Indagine Statistica Acimac, il fatturato totale, pari a 1.667,4 milioni di euro, registra una diminuzione del 4,4% sul 2011.

Tale risultato è determinato in modo particolare da una flessione del 7,4% delle esportazioni, che pur rappresentano, con un volume di 1.288,2 milioni di euro, il 77,3% del giro d’affari complessivo. Positivo invece l’andamento del mercato domestico. Le vendite in Italia risultano in crescita del 7,3%, per un fatturato di 379 milioni di euro (353 milioni di euro nel 2011). Si tratta del secondo incremento consecutivo, seppur i valori assoluti restino ancora distanti da quelli pre-crisi (-22,6%) del 2008.

The fall in export sales was a combined result of widely varying performances in the different export areas.

Two strategic markets were largely responsible for the decline: China, whose economy is slowing, and Iran, where international sanctions have hit the country and are severely affecting imports.

Nonetheless, exports have remained the real driving force behind the ceramic machinery industry’s performance.

A detailed geographical analysis of the various export markets reveals that in spite a 6% decrease on 2011, the European Union returned to the top spot in the rankings after two years with 17.2% of total export turnover (221.5 million euro).

Asia (excluding China and Taiwan) became the second largest export area accounting for 16.5% of exports with a total of 212.4 million euro, 1.5% down on 2011.

The Middle East dropped to third place with 208.3 million euro (16.2% of the total), a fall of 26.9%. Africa (principally North Africa) rose to fourth place with 170.2 million euro and a 13.2% share of the total following the largest year-on-year growth of all regions (+58.8%).

Sales in Eastern Europe rose 30.7% with respect to 2011 to reach 160.3 million euro, placing the region fifth in the rankings with a 12.4% share of the total. South America was sixth with 147.9 million euro (11.5% of the total), a fall of 10.7%.

Next came North America with exports of 100.4 million euro (7.8% of the total), up by 9.6%.

In second-to-last place was the China and Taiwan region, which following exceptional results in 2010 (when it was the top export area) and an initial contraction in 2011, fell by 59.7% in 2012 to 66.3 million euro, 5.1% of the sector’s total exports.

Structure of sector The number of sector companies operating in Italy as of 31/12/2012 remained unchanged at 150. After five consecutive years this marked an end to the contraction of the

A fronte della stabilità del numero di imprese, si riduce invece il numero di occupati che passano da 6.343 a 6.078 unità (-4,2%), con una contrazione abbastanza omogenea in tutte le categorie professionali.

Previsioni sul 2013

Five years on since the onset of the financial crisis, the world economy’s long convalescence continues. Given that the global situation is not particularly positive, it is hardly a surprise that exports should be increasingly critical for growth.

In 2012 net exports were the only component to make a positive contribution to Italian GDP and the prospects remain similar for 2013. “We have closed 2012 with positive overall results and remain cautiously optimistic for the current year,” commented Acimac’s Chairman Fabio Tarozzi.

“Although the major world markets remained sluggish during the first few months of 2013, the buoyant performance over the following months suggests that we will maintain the same level of turnover this year as in 2012,” concluded Tarozzi.

Nel 2012 le esportazioni nette sono state l’unica componente a offrire un contributo positivo al Pil italiano e le prospettive sono simili anche per il 2013. “Chiudiamo il 2012 con un bilancio complessivamente positivo – ha dichiarato il Presidente di Acimac, Fabio Tarozzi - e manteniamo un moderato ottimismo anche per l’anno in corso. Pur avendo assistito, nei primi mesi del 2013, a un generale stallo nei maggiori mercati mondiali, il dinamismo dei mesi successivi ci porta a prevedere per l’anno in corso il mantenimento degli stessi livelli di fatturato del 2012”. 

Italian brick and tile industry continues to decline

Il laterizio italiano ancora in discesa Brick and tile production in Italy has dropped for the fifth consecutive year, down by 27% since 2011 and 63.5% since 2007, the last year before the onset of the crisis.

The fall in production has closely reflected the decline in investments in new residential construction since the precrisis period as reported by CRESME (the renovation market has partially benefited certain types of product but has not had a significant effect on the sector as a whole).

A total of 7.5 million tons of bricks and tile were produced in 2012, a record low for the Italian heavy clay industry.

As shown in Table 1, all the individual product types suffered further substantial falls in 2012. Since 2007, the only

Il calo della produzione rispecchia, in perfetta aderenza, quello registrato dal CRESME per gli investimenti nelle nuove costruzioni residenziali, dal periodo pre-crisi ad oggi (il mercato del rinnovo è di “parziale” interesse per alcune tipologie di prodotto, ma non ha avuto effetti significativi sul complesso del settore).

Nel 2012 sono state prodotte 7,5 milioni di tonnellate di laterizi: minimo assoluto per l’industria italiana dei laterizi.

products to have experienced a drop of less than 50% are roof tile elements (-48.1%), mainly because they are used in the renovation of existing buildings.

All the other products suffered losses of between 58.4% and 79.2%.

Masonry materials make up 71.1% of clay products, while a third of the ened blocks.

The sector trends The industry’s main indicators are all negative, including a decline in production and the closure of a further 23 production facilities in 2012.

Only 14 companies (11.2% of the total) with a combined production of 1.26 million tons (16.8%) have reported growth in output.

By contrast, 100 companies (80%) with a combined production of 5.75 million tons (76.9% of total production) suffered a decline in output (significantly, in the case of 73 companies). Lastly, 11 companies with a combined production of 0.47 million tons have maintained 2011 levels.

A total of 147 factories are now running, while 84 have closed down since 2007.

The process of sector concentration is continuing through the closure of facilities and growth of commercial synergies.

Figure 2 shows the degree of concentration of the sector: the blue line (left axis) indicates the sum of outputs of groups/companies, from the largest to the smallest, while the red line (right axis) indicates performance in terms of cumulative percentage variation.

The graph reveals a few important points: • half of output (3.74 million tons), indicated by the blue line, was generated by the top 12 groups/companies: these reported a 28.1% fall in output, slightly higher than that of the sector as a whole; • the performance of the top 50% of groups/companies, indicated by the orange line, was -24.1% with an output of 7.0 million tons, 94% of the national total.

Variations by region and product type To evaluate regional trends within Italy, it is worth look-

evidenzia come tutte le tipologie di prodotto abbiano subito nel 2012 un’importante ulteriore perdita. Dal 2007, solo gli elementi per coperture (-48,1%) rimangono sotto la soglia del 50%, grazie anche all’impiego negli interventi di recupero degli edifici esistenti.

Tutti gli altri prodotti perdono complessivamente dal 58,4%

al 79,2%.

I materiali da muro rappresentano il 71,1% dei prodotti in laterizio e un terzo dell’intera produzione è costituita dai blocchi normali e alleggeriti.

Le dinamiche del settore I principali indicatori sono negativi: diminuiscono le produzioni e altri 23 siti produttivi sono risultati fermi nel 2012.

Solo 14 imprese (l’11,2% del totale), che producono 1,26 milioni di tonnellate (16,8%) dichiarano un aumento della produzione. Per contro, ben 100 imprese (l’80%), con 5,75 milioni di tonnellate (pari al 76,9% della produzione totale), denunciano un calo, che risulta significativo per 73 di esse.

Infine, sono 11 le imprese che hanno mantenuto i livelli del 2011, con una produzione di 0,47 milioni di tonnellate. In totale si contano 147 siti produttivi operativi, dal 2007 hanno chiuso i battenti 84 stabilimenti.

Continua il percorso di concentrazione del settore, per effetto delle chiusure di impianti e delle sinergie commerciali che si stanno ampliando.

La figura 2 riporta il grado di concentrazione del settore: la linea blu (asse di sinistra) indica la somma delle produzioni dei gruppi/aziende, dai più grandi ai più piccoli, ai quali è associata la prestazione, in termini di variazione % cumulativa, rappresentata dalla linea rossa (asse di destra).

Il grafico consente di individuare alcuni punti chiave: • linea azzurra, metà della produzione (3,74 milioni di tonnellate di laterizi) è data dai primi 12 gruppi/aziende, che registrano un calo produttivo del 28,1%, leggermente superiore a quello dell’intero settore; • linea arancione, la prestazione del 50% dei gruppi/aziende operativi è di -24,1% con una produzione di 7,0 milioni di tonnellate di laterizi, ovvero il 94% di quella nazionale.

• output of wall locks (standard, lightened and hollow locks) has remained stable in Central Italy but has fallen in other areas, particularly the South; • almost all (95%) of facing brick and paver production is concentrated in north-east and central Italy; • ceiling block production has dropped less in central Italy; • roof tile production has seen a smaller decline in the North East and a sharper fall in Central Italy.

In terms of regional performance, Central Italy has seen a smaller decline (-21.4%) than the rest of Italy, especially the South (-31.6%).

In terms of geographical distribution, northern Italy is gaining in share (west and east equally) and now accounts for more than half of all production plants and 55% of total national output.

Short-term forecasts The forecasts for output are based on the trends in construction investments (source: CRESME), shown in table

In termini di performance regionali, il Centro registra un calo meno significativo (-21,4%) rispetto al resto d’Italia e, in particolare, al Sud (-31,6%).

Relativamente alla distribuzione geografica, assume ancora maggiore importanza il Nord dell’Italia (in egual misura tra Ovest ed Est) dove operano più della metà degli impianti ed è presente una produzione pari al 55% del valore nazionale.

Le previsioni nel breve periodo Le previsioni delle produzioni sono determinate sulla base delle dinamiche degli investimenti nelle costruzioni (fonte CRESME), riportate in tabella 2, secondo la quale ci sarà ancora un calo importante nel 2013 e più contenuto nel 2014, per quanto riguarda il “nuovo residenziale”.

2, which indicate a further substantial fall in the “residential new build” segment in 2013 and a smaller fall in 2014. The residential renovation market also saw a 4.8% contraction in 2012 and this fall would have continued in 2013 in the absence of incentives.

But taking account of the extension of tax benefits for building renovation (50%) and for energy performance improvements (65%) established by Legislative Decree D.L. 63 of 4 June 2013, CRESME estimates that spending on renovation work may increase by 1.1% in 2013 and by 1.6% in 2014 (provisional data pending conversion into law). So considering the percentage variations in residential new build and renovation investments (including the effect of tax incentives established by D.L. 63/13) forecast by Cresme for 2013 and 2014 and applying these differentials to the individual types of clay products according to their target markets (ref. Survey of the relationship between clay products and competitor materials, current positioning and future developments, September 2007, CRESME), it is possible to make forecasts for the various kinds of clay products.

Table 3 points to a further large fall (-8.8%) in 2013 and a smaller fall in 2014 (-2.1%). Production is expected to hit a trough of 6.7 million tons in 2014.

In considerazione, però, della proroga delle agevolazioni fiscali finalizzate al recupero edilizio (50%) e al miglioramento delle prestazioni energetiche (65%), definite dal D.L. 63 del 4 giugno 2013, il CRESME stima che la spesa in interventi di rinnovo si possa attestare sul +1,1% nel 2013 e sul +1,6%, nell’anno successivo (dati provvisori in attesa della conversione in legge).

Considerando, quindi, le variazioni percentuali previste dal CRESME per il 2013 e il 2014 negli investimenti per il comparto residenziale, “nuove costruzioni” e “rinnovo” (comprensivo dell’effetto degli incentivi fiscali di cui al DL 63/13), e applicando tali differenziali alle singole tipologie di laterizio, in funzione dei relativi mercati, nuovo ed esistente, cui sono destinate (rif. Indagine sul rapporto competitivo fra i prodotti in laterizio e i materiali concorrenti, posizionamenti attuali e scenari evolutivi, settembre 2007, CRESME), è stato possibile sviluppare le previsioni per i diversi prodotti in laterizio.

La tabella 3 evidenzia ancora un calo importante (-8,8%) nel 2013 e meno marcato nel 2014 (-2,1%). Il punto di minimo della produzione dovrebbe toccare i 6,7 milioni di tonnella te nel 2014.

Edilizia a gonfie vele in Arabia Saudita With average annual GDP growth of around 5% (5.5-6% in 2012), Saudi Arabia is the world’s 20th largest economy. It accounts for 45% of the Gulf region’s GDP and 25% of that of the MENA area (Middle East and North Africa).

In recent years, the contribution of the non-oil sector to GDP has grown steadily due to efforts to diversify the country’s productive structure, which also benefits from the low cost of energy. As the world’s top oil producer country (it holds a quarter of the planet’s oil reserves) and the fourth largest in terms of natural gas reserves (4% of world reserves), Saudi Arabia guarantees gas supplies to local firms at 0.59 euro/MMBtu and electrical energy at 0.025 euro/ kWh. The construction sector is one of the pillars of the Saudi Arabian economy and attracts major investment on the part of the public sector, large-scale industry, commerce and private investors.

In recent years the sector has grown at average annual rates of 5-7% and similar strong growth is expected over the next 4 years, largely as a result of the government’s large spending programmes aimed at house building and social housing projects, school and hospital construction, transport infrastructures and expansion of the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.In the housing segment, a total of 1.5 million new homes are expected to be built between 2012 and 2015 in response to real housing needs estimated at around 5.5 million dwelling units (as 40% of the Saudi population is under 14 years of age, housing will continue to be an engine of the construction industry over the coming years).

Government investments in the sector already amount to around 70 billion euro and the government recently announced the allocation of “social packages” to a total value of almost 100 billion euro, of which about half are designated for housing.

The two largest cities, Riyadh (4.5 million inhabitants) and Jeddah (around 3 million inhabitants), have now reached the size of medium-large metropolises and are still growing.

The sector’s development prospects are also linked to projects for the construction of six enormous new cities, the socalled Economic Cities, which will cost an estimated US $110 billion and will house around 4.5 million inhabitants.

Construction work has begun on two of the six cities: King Abdullah City, north of Jeddah, and Prince Abdulaziz Bin Mesaed Economical City. Private investments also play a very important role in the residential segment. Major contracts signed in the first few months of 2013 include the second phase of the Abraj Al Hilal project in Jeddah (326 apart-

Il settore delle costruzioni rappresenta uno dei comparti portanti dell’economia saudita in cui sono destinate a confluire ingenti risorse finanziarie del settore pubblico, della grande industria, del commercio e dei risparmiatori privati.

Negli ultimi anni il comparto è cresciuto a tassi medi del 5-7% annuo e si stima un analogo buon sviluppo anche nei prossimi 4 anni, grazie anche ai massicci programmi di spesa da parte del Governo destinati a edilizia abitativa e progetti di social housing, edilizia scolastica e sanitaria, infrastrutture per i trasporti, nonché all’espansione dei luoghi sacri di Mecca e Medina.

Nel segmento dell’edilizia abitativa è prevista la realizzazione di 1,5 milioni di nuove abitazioni tra il 2012 e il 2015, a fronte di un fabbisogno abitativo reale stimato in circa 5,5 milioni di unità abitative (il 40% della popolazione saudita ha meno di 14 anni, cifra che dà la misura di quanto il tema casa continuerà a rappresentare un motore dell’industria edilizia per i prossimi anni).

Gli investimenti pubblici nel settore sono già pari a circa 70 miliardi di euro e recentemente è stata annunciata l’assegnazione di “pacchetti sociali” per un valore complessivo di quasi 100 miliardi di euro, di cui circa la metà destinata all’edilizia abitativa.

Le due città principali, Riyad (4,5 milioni di abitanti) e Jeddah (circa 3 milioni di abitanti), hanno ormai raggiunto dimensioni di metropoli medio-grandi e sono tuttora in continua espansione.

Le prospettive di sviluppo del settore sono legate anche ai progetti per la costruzione di sei nuove faraoniche città, le cosiddette Economic Cities, per un costo stimato in 110 miliardi di dollari, che ospiteranno strutture per circa 4,5 milioni di abitanti. La costruzione di due delle sei città è già stata avviata: King Abdullah City, a nord di Jeddah, e Prince Abdulaziz Bin Mesaed Economical City.

The Kingdom Tower will be located in the 23-hectare Waterfront District, an exclusive pedestrian-friendly setting on the Kingdom City lakefront encompassing a shopping mall, residential spaces, offices, two luxury hotels and open-space amenities such as the central Plaza.

Analysts estimate that around $120 billion will be spent on new hotel construction over the next few years.

Green building Special attention is being devoted to green building and policies. Le stime degli analisti indicano in circa 120 miliardi di dollari la spesa per la costruzione di nuovi hotel nei prossimi anni.

La bioedilizia Un’attenzione particolare viene riservata alla bioedilizia e alle politiche green. Secondo gli ultimi dati ufficiali del Governo, l’importo totale degli investimenti sauditi in progetti di costruzione sostenibili supera quota 26 miliardi di dollari, con 76 nuove costruzioni a basso impatto ambientale, la maggior parte realizzate a Riyadh. The Italian company Bedeschi has been commissioned to develop an innovative raw materials management system for Saudi Ceramics’ tiles factories.

The fully-automated system will be able to store up to 10 different types of clays and feldspars per line and distribute them simultaneously to 4 plants.

It will consist of incoming box feeders and conveyor belts to feed two series of storage boxes, while a new concept excavator will guarantee constant feeding.

The plants will be housed in a structure specially designed to minimise losses of stored raw materials.

The system offers numerous advantages, including separate storage for each material so as to eliminate the risk of contamination, optimised usage of space, automatic feeding of each individual component needed for production and management of the process from a single control station.

Sarà l’italiana Bedeschi a sviluppare un innovativo sistema di gestione delle materie prime per gli stabilimenti per la produzione di piastrelle di Saudi Ceramics. Il sistema, interamente automatizzato, sarà in grado di gestire lo stoccaggio di argille e feldspati per un totale di 10 tipologie per linea e distribuirle in contemporanea a 4 impianti. L’installazione prevede una serie di cassoni dosatori in ricevimento e dei nastri trasportatori che vanno ad alimentare due serie di box di stoccaggio gestiti da un escavatore di nuova concezione che garantisce un’alimentazione costante. Gli impianti saranno collocati all’interno di una struttura appositamente studiata per garantire la minor dispersione delle materie prime stoccate.

Standing at the feet of the Andes, under the towering peak of Aconcagua, the city of Mendoza is located in one of the areas of highest seismic risk anywhere in South America.

It is also home to one of the two manufacturing facilities of Industrias Chirino, an Argentine clay block manufacturer with 170 employees Chirino family La famiglia Chirino founded by the Chirino family in 1982 (the family’s other facility, built in 1980, is located in the city of San Juan). Given the strong local demand for building materials, the company planned a large-scale project to renovate its existing technology while taking account of the high seismic risk of the area.

The Argentine company chose Marcheluzzo Impianti due to its proven capacity to supply cutting-edge turnkey plants.

The supplied plant is already fully operational and includes an earthquake-resistant tunnel kiln and complete automated equipment.

Siamo a Mendoza, ai piedi della Cordigliera delle Ande, proprio sotto al grande Aconcagua, una delle zone più sismiche dell’intero continente sudamericano.

Qui ha sede uno dei due stabilimenti produttivi di Industrias Chirino, azienda argentina, produttrice di blocchi in laterizio, fondata nel 1982 dall’omonima famiglia.

Un altro sito produttivo, datato 1980, è localizzato invece nella città di San Juan.

L’azienda, che conta in totale 170 dipendenti, a seguito della notevole richiesta di materiale da costruzione proveniente dal mercato locale, ha pianificato un importante intervento destinato a rinnovare la tecnologia esistente, che tenesse però in considerazione l’alto rischio sismico della zona.

Per la dimostrata capacità di fornire impianti completi tecnologicamente avanzati, l’azienda argentina si è affidata al know how di Marcheluzzo Impianti.

Tunnel kiln The tunnel kiln is highly innovative in terms of its structure.

The loadbearing structure of the masonry and the suspended ceiling is built with top quality refractory materials with different levels of alumina content according to the application zones.

The insulation of the walls and ceiling allows for a considerable reduction in heat losses, while the recovered heat meets almost all the requirements of the dryer.

However, a thermal room equipped with an airflow burner is provided to meet production requirements in all conditions, particularly during the winter.

The key strength of the tunnel kiln is its earthquake-resistant structure.

A supporting system has been designed with steel lattice girders and beams capable of supporting the entire surface of the roof in the event of an earthquake and thus preventing the kiln from collapsing.

The kiln is equipped with 44 high-speed lateral gas burners and a fast cooling system, while heat recovery is performed using a conventional ceiling-mounted system.

La struttura portante delle murature, come la volta sospesa, è realizzata con materiale refrattario di alta qualità e diverso tenore di allumina a seconda della zona di utilizzo.

Il pacchetto di isolamenti per pareti e volta permette un notevole abbattimento della dispersione termica facendo recuperare al meglio tutte le kcal possibili per il quasi totale funzionamento dell’essiccatoio; è stata comunque applicata una sala termica con bruciatore in vena d’aria che aiuta, soprattutto durante l’inverno, il raggiungimento della produzione richiesta.

Il punto forte di questa realizzazione è la struttura antisismica applicata al forno a tunnel. È stato concepito un sistema di sostegno con putrelle e travi in acciaio reticolato che permette, in caso di terremoto, di reggere tutta la superficie della volta sospesa senza far collassare l’intero forno.

The cutting line is connected to the new module preparation line, which is designed to handle products with great care so as not to affect the quality of finished products.

Tray handling and storage The new tray handling line is designed to allow for fully automatic operation in accordance with cycle times and output requirements.

New lifters have been installed for loading and offloading the trays onto the cars to allow for a continuous tray loading/offloading cycle on each car.

This significantly reduces the cycle times and machinery wear.

As for storage, a fully automatic gripper and tray store are provided to enable the number of trays on the cars to be changed without interfering with the production cycle of either the extruder or the kiln car setting zone.

This solution allows extrusion and green ware car loading to be performed for a short time even if the setting line has momentarily come to a standstill.

It is also possible to operate the setting line and offload the dried products from cars even if the extruder and the preparation line are not operating.

Dryer car handling The new line handles the cars more smoothly to lower the risk of blocks falling.

This improves the quality of finished products and considerably reduces the number of rejects. New transfer cars have also been installed inside the dryer to optimise the production cycle.

Thermal room for the existing dryer and integration of the ventilation system The existing dryer has been integrated with an airflow heat generator to permit operation even without air recovery from the kiln.

Sono stati installati dei nuovi ascensori per il carico/scarico dei pianali sui carrelli e un sistema di carico-scarico pianali che consente la movimentazione a “ciclo continuo” su ogni carrello per diminuire sensibilmente i tempi di ciclo e l’usura dei macchinari.

Per quanto riguarda lo stoccaggio, è stata inserita una pinza e un magazzino, entrambi automatici, che consentono di fare il cambio del numero dei piani sui carrelli senza interferire sul tempo di produzione sia dell’estrusione, sia della zona di impilamento nei carri del forno.

L’accorgimento permette di poter lavorare, per un breve periodo, con l’estrusione e il carico dei carrelli del materiale verde anche se la linea impilatrice è momentaneamente ferma o, al contrario, operare con la linea impilatrice, quindi scaricare i carrelli del materiale secco, anche se l’estrusione e la linea di preparazione sono ferme.

The kiln cars are loaded by a 4 rotating head gripper capable of setting all types of products with different loading requirements.

The pneumatically controlled gripper has very high gripping strength, allowing it to off-set whole packs.

Packaging line The packaging line transports the offloaded packs to the pallet truck pick-up area.

In addition to stable packs (the layers alternate so that the one below is unable to move during transport), it is equipped with an automatic hooding machine and a bell type oven.

Following installation of the new plant, the required production capacity of 500 ton/day has been easily exceeded, allowing stoppages to be made for maintenance and cleaning.

The success of the operation owes much to the close cooperation between Marcheluzzo and the Chirino family, who demonstrated their exceptional business skills by personally supervising the entire plant set-up operation on site.

Linea imballo La linea imballo trasporta i pacchi scaricati nella zona della presa con il muletto. Oltre a un pacco stabile (ogni strato è incrociato in modo tale che quello inferiore non si muova durante il trasporto), è dotata di un’incappucciatrice automatica e un fornetto con campana.

Grazie alla nuova installazione, la capacità produttiva richiesta di 500 ton/giorno, è stata abbondantemente superata, consentendo anche il tempo di fermo impianti per la manutenzione preventiva e la pulizia. Notevole la sinergia tra Marcheluzzo e la famiglia Chirino, che ha seguito personalmente in cantiere tutte le fasi della realizzazione impiantistica dando prova di gran de capacità imprenditoriale.

The first facility to start up production following the Libyan revolution is located at Surman, west of Tripoli.

It consists of a line supplied to Almutahida Company for Manufacturing Building Materials by Technology Design, an Italian company specialising in plants for the brick and ceramic industry.

The business relationship and personal friendship between Technology Design and Almutahida Company strengthened in the years prior to the revolution, when the Italian company completed the start-up of the first production line.

The new plant was built in a record time of 12 months and came into operation in March 2013. It is currently the largest installation in Libya with a production capacity of 700 t/day of hollow and ceiling blocks and employs around 10 people per shift.

Due to its high degree of automation, it is the first facility capable of handling the processes of automation, drying and firing without the use of human operators.

A fired product unloading machine capable of forming strapped packs allows for yard storage of finished products.

This means that production can be performed continuously regardless of fluctuations in market demand.

Si tratta della linea fornita alla Almutahida Company for Manufacturing Building Materials da Technology Design, azienda attiva nella progettazione di impianti per l’industria dei laterizi e della ceramica.

Il rapporto commerciale e di amicizia con Almutahida Company si è consolidato negli anni antecedenti la rivoluzione civile, quando Technology Design ha terminato l’avviamento della prima linea di produzione.

Il nuovo impianto, entrato in funzione a marzo 2013, è stato realizzato nel tempo record di 12 mesi e, con una capacità produttiva di 700t/giorno di blocchi forati e solaio (impiegando circa 10 persone per turno), è attualmente la più grande installazione presente in Libia.

Dryer The dryer designed and built by Technology Design is a model TDRD60 fast carrier dryer.

The drying cycle is extremely short (2.5-3 hours) and the simplicity of design is reflected in the extreme ease of set-up and operation of the drying process.

The dryer has two tunnels connected at their ends by two vertical channels.

The products to be dried are loaded onto dedicated multilevel structures that are transported inside the dryer by a chain drive system.

The airflow inside the dryer moves in an opposite direction to that of the products and is generated by a series of axial and centrifugal fans which introduce hot air, blow air between one tunnel and the other and expel moist air.

The dryer is optimised for North African markets and guarantees a constant output with a significant reduction in thermal and electrical energy consumption.

After the drying stage, the wet material loading system unloads the dried products from the dryer supports.

L’essiccatoio, progettato e costruito da Technology Design, è di tipo rapido a bilancelle modello TDRD60. In questo essiccatoio rapido il ciclo di essiccazione è estremamente breve (2,5/3 ore) e la semplicità costruttiva si riflette anche nell’estrema facilità di regolazione e conduzione del processo di essiccazione. L’essiccatoio è dotato di due tunnel sovrapposti collegati alle estremità da due canali verticali.

Il materiale da essiccare viene caricato su apposite strutture multipiano che si muovono all’interno dell’essiccatoio grazie a un sistema di trazione a catena. Il flusso d’aria all’interno si sposta sempre in controcorrente rispetto alla direzione di avanzamento del materiale ed è garantito da una serie di ventilatori assiali e centrifughi per l’immissione dell’aria calda, il rilancio dell’aria tra un tunnel e l’altro e l’espulsione dell’aria umida. L’essiccatoio è ottimizzato per i mercati nord africani e garantisce una produzione costante con abbattimento significativo dei consumi termici ed elettrici.

The TDFT46 type tunnel kiln has a length of 149 metres, a tunnel of width 4.6 metres and a useful loading height of 2 metres. The three-bay kiln cars have a pitch of 1.4 metres.

Much attention has been devoted to the choice of materials, with the suspended ceiling and internal walls made entirely from refractory materials.

The firing system, equipped with fuel oil gasification burners, is already set up for future use of natural gas or LPG. To ensure interchangeability with the first plant, the new cars have been designed with the same dimensions as the existing models. The firing temperature is 930°C with cycles of between 19 and 22 hours.

The kiln and dryer functions are managed by a computerised supervision system that allows for fully automatic drying and firing settings. All the dryer and kiln installations are displayed by a dedicated software package capable of controlling the plants directly from the computer in the main control room.

To ensure the constant efficiency of important moving structures such as the kiln cars, two vitally important machines have been installed, an automatic extractor for cleaning and an automatic wheel lubricator.

Depending on requirements, the fired material can be unloaded either in individual layers or as complete packs which are subsequent strapped.

An unloading machine equipped with three grippers unloads the fired material up to a maximum height of a metre and subsequently deposits it on a conveyor.

To facilitate and rationalise yard storage of finished products and to speed up loading onto trucks, a fired product layer unloading machine has been installed.

After being suitably separated, arranged and overturned, the unloaded material is recomposed into strapped packs that are simple to transport using pallet trucks.

Following installation of the new plant, Almutahida Company has reached a production capacity of 1200 ton/day of ceiling and wall blocks, making it the largest heavy clay producer in Libya.

Grande attenzione è stata riposta nella scelta dei materiali: la volta sospesa e le murature interne sono state realizzate esclusivamente con materiale refrattario.

L’impianto di cottura, dotato di bruciatori a gasificazione di olio combustibile, risulta essere già idoneo per impieghi futuri di gas naturale o GPL. Al fine di garantire l’interscambiabilità con il primo impianto, i nuovi carri forniti sono stati progettati con le stesse dimensioni e ingombri degli esistenti. La temperatura di cottura è di 930°C con cicli operativi compresi tra 19 e 22 ore. Le funzioni del forno e dell’essiccatoio sono gestite da un sistema informatico di supervisione che consente impostazioni di essiccazione e cottura gestibili in modo completamente automatico. Tutte le installazioni di essiccatoio e forno sono visualizzate su un software opportunamente sviluppato che consente di intervenire sugli impianti direttamente dal computer di gestione situato nella sala quadri principale. Per garantire una costante efficienza di importanti strutture mobili, quali i carri del forno, sono state installate due macchine di vitale importanza: una aspiratrice automatica per la pulizia e l’ingrassatore automatico delle ruote.

Lo scarico del materiale cotto può essere effettuato secondo le necessità o a strati singoli, o a pacchi interi con successiva reggiatura finale. Una scaricatrice dotata di tre pinze di presa effettua lo scarico del materiale cotto fino ad un’altezza massima di un metro e successivamente lo depone su di un trasportatore a sagome. Per agevolare e razionalizzare lo stoccaggio dei prodotti finiti a piazzale e velocizzare le operazioni di carico del materiale sui mezzi di trasporto è stata installata anche una scaricatrice a strati del materiale cotto. Il materiale così scaricato, dopo essere stato opportunamente separato programmato e ribaltato, viene ricomposto in pacchi reggiati facilmente trasportabili con i muletti.

Grazie al nuovo impianto, Almutahida Company ha raggiunto una capacità produttiva di 1200 ton/giorno di blocchi da solaio e da muro, classificandosi come il maggior produttore di late rizio in Libia.

The new layout was designed intelligently so that Briqueterie Amouri could add a second dryer and a second setting machine if they wanted, using the foundations and the automatic movement of the kiln cars without any changes or extra work. Towards the end of 2010 Sabo was ready to begin construction of the project, which took about two years to finish.

The plant Briqueterie Amouri is the first factory in Algeria that decided to use robots. The most difficult task for Sabo was to overcome the scepticism towards the use of robots on the part of the client, who was finally won over by the success of similar installations made by Sabo in Tunisia. As this was the first project of its kind in Algeria, it was also an important opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of robotic systems to all prospective clients in the region.

An essential aspect of the plant was the use of a rapid dryer with 64 balancelles of 6m x 1.1m, loaded with three rows of bricks instead of two, making a total capacity of 840 tons/day of fired brick. To ensure the best quality in handling this rather difficult and very plastic clay, an improved cutter and loading equipment complete with an automat-

Il compito più difficile per Sabo è stato quello di vincere lo scetticismo dell’azienda, poi convinta dai successi ottenuti con i sistemi robotizzati in analoghe realizzazioni effettuate da Sabo in Tunisia. Trattandosi del primo progetto di questo tipo in Algeria, sarebbe stata un’importante occasione per dimostrare all’industria locale i benefici dei sistemi robotizzati.

The dryer was constructed in such a way that it would subsequently be able to use the heat recovered from the second kiln as well as that produced by two extra heat generators located near the recycling ventilators.

The kiln was constructed in the traditional way using refractory bricks and Burton refractories for the ceiling. The Sabo automatic regulation system was installed to ensure optimal cooperation between the kiln and the dryer so as to avoid any energy losses. All the recovered energy is transferred to the dryer, including heat from cooling the ceiling and the kiln cars.

Briqueterie Amouri also had a special request concerning control of the entire factory. They wanted to be able to view on-screen any problem arising on any machine so that their technicians would be able to solve it as quickly as possible. For this purpose, Sabo created a specially-designed program for Briqueterie Amouri using 3D technology to make it even more userfriendly.

To give Briqueterie Amouri a further competitive advantage over its competitors, the project was completed with the addition of a new packaging line that uses two programming benches loaded by two robots. On of each of these two programming benches Sabo also installed two horizontal strapping machines. A further two robots stack the programmed layers in such a way as to create a final pack with holes that can be easily handled using a forklift without the need for any kind of palette.

Two metal benches with special profiles, each equipped with a vertical strapping machine, now produce the final strapped pack.

A two-headed gripper transfers these packs to another metallic bench, positioning them on a double row for transport to the storage area where they are picked up by a forklift. This is the biggest unsetting machine ever made in Algeria, capable of handling a production of more than 840 tons/day of fired bricks.

An additional advantage is the use of triple gripper system for unsetting half a pack each time from the kiln car (JF)  to cater for customers wishing to buy in bulk.

Su ciascun banco di programmazione, Sabo ha installato due macchine reggiatrici orizzontali, mentre altri due robot accatastano gli strati programmati in modo da creare un pacco finale con fori, facilmente gestibile da un carrello elevatore senza l’ausilio di pallet. Due banchi metallici con profili speciali, ognuno dotato di una macchina reggiatrice verticale, confezionano poi il pacco finale reggiato. Una pinza a due teste trasferisce i pacchi a un altro banco metallico, posizionandoli su doppia fila per poi trasportarli alla zona di stoccaggio da dove vengono prelevati tramite carrello elevatore. Si tratta della disimpilatrice più grande realizzata finora in Algeria, capace di gestire una produzione di oltre 840 tonnellate/giorno di mattoni cotti. Un ulteriore vantaggio è rappresentato dall’uso del sistema di pinza tripla per disimpilare dal carro forno mezzo pacco alla volta, utile nel  caso di ordini di spallettizzati o prodotti sfusi.

The company began production in 1992 when it installed its first kiln for B8 and B12 bricks, the type most commonly used in Algeria. These investments enabled the group to look beyond the country’s borders, leading to participation in international trade fairs throughout the Maghreb region and elsewhere in Africa.

Bouras continued to make investments over subsequent years and has now completely renewed its initial brick production lines (kilns, dryers and handling systems) in order to reduce emissions and energy costs and increase production capacity.

At the same time it has built a second line for high-quality roof tiles in a different format, as well as a specialist line for the production of facing bricks, solar screens, pavers and decorative elements typical of the old handmade tradition.

It is also building a complete line for high-pressure extruded ventilated façade panels and a plant with a capacity of around 2,000 tons/ day to be installed at the old production facility.

This will be used to produce Extrusion phase of B8 6-exit die B8 and B12 bricks, wall Filiera B8 a 6 uscite in estrusione blocks, ceiling blocks and bases together with prefabricated lattices with the aim of adding a pre-assembled ceiling system to its range. The plant engineering projects will be completed towards the end of 2014.

The choice of suppliers has always been a top priority for Bouras, resulting in lasting partnerships.

For the extruder dies in particular, for years the group has opted for the expertise and reliability of Tecnofiliere (Novi di Modena, Italy), which to date has supplied the Algerian company with more than 45 dies, a range of spare parts and 7 pressure heads of various diameters and dimensions.

For the new lines, Tecnofiliere has conducted meticulous technical studies to tailor each die to the specific requirements of the individual plants.

In particular, the dies for B8 and B12 bricks feature cores and liners made of hard metal up to around 2000HV and have given very positive results.

Once all the plants under construction are installed and fully operational, Bouras Group will have a product range that includes almost all formats used in the sector.

Tali investimenti hanno permesso al Gruppo di guardare oltre i confini nazionali, come hanno testimoniato le varie presenze a fiere in tutto il Maghreb e nel resto dell’Africa.

La parola “investimento” ha contrassegnato anche gli anni successivi.

Oggi, in particolare, l’azienda ha rinnovato completamente le prime linee per mattoni (forni, essiccatoi e movimentazione) con l’obiettivo di ridurre al massimo emissioni e costi energetici, nonché di aumentare la capacità produttiva.

Parallelamente sono state realizzate una seconda linea per tegole di alta qualità e differente formato e una linea speciale per mattoni faccia vista, frangisole, pavimenti ed elementi decorativi tipici dell’antica tradizione del “fatto a mano”.

In fase di realizzazione, invece, una linea completa per pareti ventilate estruse ad alta pressione e un impianto da circa 2.000 ton/giorno da installare nel vecchio sito produttivo, con cui saranno prodotti mattoni B8, B12, blocchi da muro, solaio e fondelli insieme a tralicci prefabbricati allo scopo di aggiungere all’offerta anche il sistema solaio pre-assemblato.

I progetti impiantistici saranno ultimati verso la fine del 2014.

La scelta dei fornitori, con i quali ha instaurato solidi rapporti di partnership, è sempre stata prioritaria per Bouras. In particolare, per la fornitura delle filiere, il gruppo da anni ha scelto la competenza e l’affidabilità di Tecnofiliere che, ad oggi, vanta l’installazione presso l’azienda algerina di oltre 45 filiere, svariati ricambi e 7 bocche di diversi diametri e dimensioni.

Per le nuove linee, l’azienda di Novi di Modena ha effettuato uno studio meticoloso che ha consentito di calibrare ogni singola filiera sulle esigenze di ciascun impianto. Nello specifico, le filiere per mattoni B8 e B12 sono state realizzate con tasselli e cornici in metallo duro fino a circa 2000HV, che hanno dato risultati molto positivi.

Una volta installati e portati a regime tutti gli impianti in corso di realizzazione, il Gruppo Bouras disporrà di una gamma produttiva completa di quasi tutti i formati esistenti nel set tore.

Lode has been making building materials for over 50 years and today produces high-quality facing bricks, pavers and vertically perforated bricks at several sites in Latvia and Poland.

The Liepa plant, not far from the Latvian capital of Riga, mainly produces facing bricks and special format bricks for open fireplaces and window ledges in a wide range of sizes and colours.

Lingl and Lode have been working together for some time.

Back in 2007 the German company built a new production line for the Äne plant for the production of high-porosity Keraterm vertically perforated clay blocks.

TECHNOLOGY

The new cutter installed at Liepa performs chamfering on four sides and was easily integrated into the existing line. It meets requirement of high-quality and above all uniform chamfering of a wide variety of products (a total of 33 sizes are produced).

Dal prototipo presentato al Ceramitec di Monaco del 2009, la taglierina rotativa modulare Lingl (brevetto *EP 2 200 789/*EP 2 2207 652) è stata oggetto di una costante attività di R&S fino al suo definitivo perfezionamento che ha consentito il lancio sul mercato e la prima installazione, avvenuta a inizio 2013 presso la Lode SIA in Lettonia.

Attiva da oltre 50 anni, Lode produce materiali da costruzione, mattoni, mattoni faccia a vista, pavimenti e mattoni forati in verticale di alta qualità in diversi stabilimenti in Lettonia e Polonia. In particolare, lo stabilimento di Liepa, non lontano dalla capitale lettone Riga, produce principalmente mattoni faccia a vista e mattoni speciali per camini aperti e per davanzali in una vasta gamma di formati e colori.

The basic principle of the design of this cutter is similar to that of the cutter types mentioned above.

The machine body contains the drive, which accelerates the moving chamfering and cutting cars and synchronizes them with the speed of the column.

The cars are subsequently returned to their starting position.

The chamfering device is designed in such a way that the chamfering blades always touch each other at the corners, which ensures very clean chamfering and an electronically adjustable chamfering depth during operation.

Moreover, the closing movement of the chamfering blades takes place at the same time on all sides.

Thanks to the kinematics, this device is very short and positioned as close as possible in front of the cutting modules to ensure optimum chamfering and cutting of the bricks.

The modules are preset to the respective brick cross-section with special gauge and adapter components. The adjustment range of the chamfering blades is ± 10 mm in width and ± 5 mm in height.

This option is interesting, for example, when one brick size must be produced with different raw material mixes with varying shrinkage.

The rotary cut solves some basic problems associated with other cutting techniques.

With conventional universal cutters, a gap has to be left between the bricks for the return movement of the wires.

This reduces the cutting rate, limits the maximum possible number of cutting wires and produces unwanted brick groups downstream of the cutter that minimize flexibility of the dryer car loading.

With the bidirectional cut of facing bricks, the clay column must be supported against slipping or lifting, and this often leaves unwanted impressions on the sensitive clay column.

In the cutting method with a rotating wire revolving around the clay column, the column is always cut from the top, which eliminates the need for a gap. To maintain the quality of the bottom chamfer in the support plate area, socalled chamfer supports are installed. These extend during the cut and ensure that the bottom chamfer is not soiled with clay.

I moduli sono preimpostati in base alla sezione del mattone tramite adattatori e speciali componenti di calibro. Il campo di regolazione delle lame è di ± 10 mm in larghezza e ± 5 mm in altezza.

Questa opzione è interessante, ad esempio, quando sussiste la necessità di produrre un formato di mattone con miscele di materie prime differenti e con gradi diversi di ritiro.

Il taglio rotativo risolve alcuni problemi che si verificano con altre tecniche di taglio.

Con le taglierine universali tradizionali, infatti, per permettere il ritorno dei fili è necessario lasciare uno spazio tra i mattoni, il che riduce la velocità di taglio, limita il numero massimo possibile di fili e produce gruppi di mattoni indesiderati a valle della taglierina, limitando la flessibilità di carico dei carrelli essiccatoio.

Con il taglio bidirezionale di mattoni faccia a vista, la colonna di argilla deve essere sostenuta per evitare scivolamento o sollevamento, che spesso lasciano segni indesiderati.

Il metodo di taglio con un filo rotante attorno alla stessa colonna, invece, fa sì che essa venga sempre tagliata dall’alto verso il basso eliminando la necessità di uno spazio tra i mattoni.

Per mantenere la qualità dello smusso inferiore nella zona delle piastre di appoggio, vengono installati i cosiddetti supporti smusso, che si estendono durante il taglio ed evitano che lo smusso inferiore si sporchi di argilla.

La combinazione dei due principi porta quindi a una macchina molto compatta e flessibile, con un’ampia gamma di impostazioni.

At Lode, the modular rotary cutter with an upstream 4-sided chamfering device uses three wires to cut continuously without waste. This allows for 45 cuts per minute on around 8,000 bricks/h in the size 267 x 127 x 70 mm. The cut length is precise and can be changed quickly without the need for any tools. With the addition of other chamfering and cutting modules, even higher production rates can be easily configured. The cutting and chamfering modules can be cleaned and maintained outside of the cutter, avoiding the need for complete dismantling of the cutter bench.

The Schumacher brickworks based in Körblingen, Switzerland is a family-owned brick manufacturer founded more than 150 years ago which has been producing a wide selection of high quality bricks for six generations. The Schumacher family is continuing its efforts to upgrade and automate the brick production processes at its Gisikon site, most recently with the installation of a modern robotic unloading plant and a 900air+ integrated grinding machine supplied

by Novoceric (Mellrichstadt, Germany).

This brings to three the number of plants supplied by Novoceric, the latest of which was installed in a very short period of time. The new line has enabled Schumacher to produce three newly developed bricks for highly effective heat-insulating brickwork. The top product of this series is the Monobrick ZSK, which offers optimum values for thermal insulation thanks to the fact that they are bonded together with thinlayer mortar (2 mm). It also makes for clean and accurate masonry requiring considerably less working time. The product was developed thanks to the introduction of the new 900air+ grinding machine, which automatically grinds the fired bricks in a continuous process with an accuracy of ± 0.2 mm.

La Schumacher Brickworks di Körblingen (Svizzera) è una fornace a conduzione familiare fondata oltre 150 anni fa e che ormai da sei generazioni produce una vasta gamma di mattoni di alta qualità nello stabilimento di Gisikon, oggetto di un impegno costante di ammodernamento, soprattutto nel campo dell’automazione. Recentemente, infatti, Novoceric (Mellrichstadt, Germania) vi ha installato un moderno impianto di scarico robotizzato e una rettificatrice integrata 900air+.

Con quest’ultima fornitura salgono a 3 gli impianti forniti da Novoceric all’azienda svizzera, quest’ultimo, in particolare, installato in tempi estremamente rapidi.

Grazie alla nuova linea, Shumacher ha potuto facilmente realizzare tre tipi di mattoni di nuova concezione per muratura termoisolante. Il prodotto di punta di questa serie è il Monobrick ZSK, che offre ottimi valori di isolamento termico, grazie alla possibilità di utilizzare in fase di posa una malta a strato sottile (2 mm). Questo, peraltro, consente anche di realizzare una muratura pulita e precisa con tempi di lavorazione molto inferiori agli standard. Il prodotto è stato sviluppato grazie all’introduzione della nuova rettificatrice 900air+ che rettifica automaticamente i mattoni cotti in un processo continuo con una precisione di ± 0,2 millimetri.

The grinding machine The high flexibility of the 900air+ shows that the plant owners have already planned for the future. The grinding width is adjustable between 199 and 600 mm and the grinding height from 40 to 600 mm.

The maximum grinding speed is 20 m/min. and the grinding disc diameter is 900 mm.The machine consists of 2 grinding stations, each with two motor-driven grinding wheels. During the grinding operation, the air distribution system ensures a continuous flow of air which removes the accumulated dust from the grinding wheel and at the same time provides the necessary cooling. A transport system with toothed belts routes the bricks past the grinding stations using a sophisticated drive technology that minimises the use of electrical energy. The highly reliable plunger system adopted on the top pressure bar is capable of compensating height tolerances of up to 15 mm without any problem.

The pressure bar is separated into sections and can always keep the passing bricks in the correct position in its individual sections. A patented laser measuring device always guarantees the required grinding precision and compensates for grinding wheel wear.

The complete grinding machine is housed in a sophisticated soundproof enclosure which fully meets the high noise protection requirements of modern industrial plants. The complete plant can be operated from a central operating panel equipped with a touch screen. The dust created during the grinding process is extracted through a pipe system which is part of the Hellmich de-dusting plant and is pneumatically conveyed to a storage silo in the material feed area of the box feeder. The grinding dust is then gradually dosed into the production process.

Packaging and wrapping As previously stated, a robotic system moves the fired bricks from the kiln car to the unloading plant, which can handle all product sizes (approx. 100 pieces), both ground and unground. However, the use of a fully automatic robot to create the dispatch packs is a new feature. High flexibility in the dispatch pack area was an important requirement for the Schumacher brickworks and the chosen solution allows Swiss pallets or Euro pallets to be used for dispatch pack forming according to needs. Ultramodern plant technology was also chosen for the subsequent stage of wrapping the dispatch packs. A stretch hood machine supplied by Lachenmeier covers the packs with a weatherproof film hood and protects them during transport. Unlike a shrinkwrapping process using combustion gas, this technology requires no additional heating energy. The completed dispatch pack – complete with the red flame and the “S” for Schumacher clearly visible on the film hood – then waits on a chain conveyor to be picked up by a fork-lift truck. A single plant operator manages the entire de-hacking plant from a central control panel where all the configuration data for the individual plant areas (including pre-selection of the kiln cars) can be viewed and if necessary modified immediately.

Continuous investments in new technology have enabled the Schumacher brickworks to remain competitive in the market. It delivers products that cater for the needs of new construction systems with a focus on lower consumption and care for the environment without sacrificing product quality.

La rettificatrice L’elevata flessibilità della 900air+ si presta a futuri cambiamenti di tipologie produttive: la larghezza di rettifica è regolabile da 199 a 600 mm, l’altezza da 40 a 600 mm.

La velocità massima di rettifica è 20 m/min, mentre il diametro della mola è di 900 mm. La macchina è composta da 2 stazioni di rettifica, ciascuna dotata di due mole motorizzate. Durante il processo, il sistema di distribuzione dell’aria assicura un flusso continuo per rimuovere la polvere accumulata sulla mola e allo stesso tempo garantisce il raffreddamento necessario.

Un sistema di trasporto dotato di cinghie dentate, convoglia con precisione i mattoni attraverso le stazioni di rettifica, grazie a una tecnologia sofisticata di motorizzazione che riduce al minimo l’utilizzo di energia elettrica. Il sistema a stantuffo della barra di pressione superiore è in grado di compensare tolleranze di altezza fino a 15 mm senza alcun problema. La barra di pressione è suddivisa in sezioni ed è in grado di mantenere i mattoni nella posizione corretta mentre transitano nelle sue singole sezioni. Un dispositivo brevettato di misurazione laser garantisce sempre la precisione di rettifica richiesta, oltre a compensare l’usura della mola stessa.

La rettificatrice completa è alloggiata in un sofisticato contenitore insonorizzato che risponde perfettamente alle severe norme di protezione dal rumore, in vigore nei moderni stabilimenti industriali. L’intero impianto può essere gestito da un pannello di comando centrale touch screen. La polvere creata durante il processo di rettifica viene estratta attraverso un sistema di tubi, parte dell’impianto di depolverazione progettato da Hellmich, e viene convogliata pneumaticamente fino ad un silo di stoccaggio ubicato nella zona di alimentazione e gradualmente introdotta nel processo di produzione.

Confezionamento e imballaggio Come si diceva, un sistema robotizzato movimenta i mattoni cotti dal carro forno alla linea di scarico che gestisce tutti i formati (circa 100 pezzi), rettificati e non.

Tuttavia, l’uso di un robot completamente automatico dedicato esclusivamente alla creazione dei pacchi per la spedizione è una configurazione nuova.

L’alta flessibilità nella zona del confezionamento rappresentava infatti una richiesta molto importante per la fornace Schumacher, e la soluzione individuata risponde all’esigenza di utilizzare, a seconda delle necessità, sia pallet svizzeri che Euro pallet per la spedizione degli ordini.

Per l’imballaggio dei pacchi confezionati si è optato per tecnologia di ultima generazione. Un’incappucciatrice fornita da Lachenmeier copre i pacchi con una pellicola resistente alle intemperie e li protegge durante il trasporto. A differenza di un processo termoretraibile con gas di combustione, questa tecnologia non richiede alcuna energia di riscaldamento. Il pacco completato - con la fiamma rossa e la “S” di Schumacher ben visibile sulla pellicola - attende quindi su un trasportatore a catena di essere prelevato da un carrello elevatore.

Un solo operatore gestisce l’intero impianto di disimpilamento da un pannello di controllo centrale dove tutti i dati di configurazione per le singole aree dell’impianto (compresa la preselezione dei carri forno) possono essere visualizzati e, se necessario, modificati all’istante.

I continui investimenti in nuova tecnologia hanno permesso alla fornace Schumacher di mantenersi competitiva sul mercato con prodotti in linea con le esigenze dettate dai nuovi sistemi di costruzione, privilegiando minori consumi e il rispetto  ambientale, senza penalizzare la qualità del prodotto.

Girnghuber, better known as Gima, is a company based in Lower Bavaria in southern Germany with a long history in the production of heavy clay building materials.

The Marklkofen plant, owned by the Girnghuber family since 1903, now employs 250 people who work in autonomous production units that produce a wide range of roofing tiles. Girnghuber has a longstanding partnership with Ceric, from which it has purchased 3 hydrocasing kilns, the first in 1990 and still in operation, and the other two in 1995 and 1999.

As part of a technological expansion project, Ceric Technologies was again called on to supply 25 new cars for the hydrocasing kiln installed in late 2012.

The plant project focused on quality, innovation and energy savings, requirements that Ceric satisfied to the full.

The project had to overcome a number of operating challenges, including a very tight deadline, the need to perform the work without disrupting ongoing production operations, the need to optimise energy efficiency of the cars and compliance with budget specifications.

All contractual undertakings were met with the full cooperation and coordination of Gima’s production teams and in accordance with all applicable safety standards.

La società Girnghuber, meglio conosciuta come Gima, ha sede nella Bassa Baviera, in Germania meridionale. L’azienda possiede una lunga tradizione nella produzione di materiali da costruzione in laterizio. Il sito industriale di Marklkofen, di proprietà della famiglia Girnghuber dal 1903, impiega 250 persone e, con impianti di produzione autonomi, produce una vasta gamma di tegole. Girnghuber vanta una lunga collaborazione con Ceric, dalla quale ha acquistato 3 forni hydrocasing, il primo nel 1990, tutt’ora in funzione, gli altri due nel ’95 e ’99.

Nell’ambito di un piano di potenziamento tecnologico, Ceric Technologies è stata nuovamente interpellata per la fornitura di 25 carri supplementari per il forno hydro-casing, installati a fine 2012. Qualità, innovazione e risparmio energetico sono stati i tre punti fondamentali sui quali si è basato il progetto impiantistico e ai quali Ceric ha risposto in modo altamente qualificato. Il progetto ha comportato diversi vincoli operativi, come tempistiche di esecuzione molto strette, necessità di eseguire i lavori senza interferire sul funzionamento dell’impianto di produzione, l’obbligo di ottimizzare l’efficienza energetica dei carri e il rispetto del budget indicato. Tutti gli impegni contrattuali sono stati rispettati in perfetta collaborazione e coordinamento con lo staff tecnico di Gima e nel più ampio rispetto delle norme di sicurezza.

A new reinforced frame design allows the insulating lining to be applied directly to the flat base plates.

This avoids the need for high-density concrete, which would adversely affect energy efficiency.

This new insulator reduces average heat loss from the cars by between 13% and 15% at a temperature of 1050°C. The reduction in heat loss is even greater at higher temperatures (Figures 1 and 2).

As an age-old material that is universally appreciated for its characteristics of strength and versatility and for its innate green qualities, clay is still hard to imitate.

Clay roof tiles in particular have aesthetic qualities that set them apart from any other product on the market. But while the process of shaping with plaster moulds guarantees the highest product quality, the technique has the drawback of high process costs due to the large number of moulds needed, the need for a dedicated plaster department, rapid plaster wear and stoppages for mould changing.

As part of the ongoing search for a compromise between production costs and product quality, Bongioanni Stampi is conducting a number of studies to test new materials and explore combinations of different technologies.

In a number of applications in various parts of Europe and the rest of the world, roof tiles are produced with extremely high quality using mixed moulds.

By using a resin cast bottom mould with a preformed membrane made of a special electrically conducting compound in conjunction with a plaster cast top mould, it is possible to form roof tiles with aesthetic characteristics on a par with those produced from plaster moulds.

The resultant roof tiles have an upper, visible surface with perfect aesthetic qualities and impeccable definition.

The lower surface maintains the characteristics of the resin mould combined with a preformed membrane, which has the advantage of considerably lower production costs.

The combined use of these technologies allows for more flexible and less expensive management than the conventional plaster mould solution.

The investment required for new models is reduced due to the need for a smaller number of lower moulds and less frequent and quicker mould changes.

Furthermore, the plaster department requires fewer machines, less stock and fewer personnel.

Il laterizio, materiale antico apprezzato universalmente per le sue caratteristiche di resistenza e versatilità, nonché per le sue innate doti “green”, risulta ancora oggi di difficile imitazione.

La tegola in laterizio, in particolare, possiede qualità estetiche che si differenziano da qualsiasi altro prodotto in commercio.

La produzione con stampi in gesso, che garantisce la miglior resa, pesa tuttavia sul prodotto per gli elevati costi di processo dovuti all’alto numero di stampi necessari, alla gestione del reparto gesseria, alla rapida usura del gesso e alle fermate dovute al cambio stampi.

Alla costante ricerca di compromessi tra costi di produzione e qualità del prodotto, Bongioanni Stampi sta portando avanti diversi studi testando nuovi materiali e sperimentando l’associazione tra diverse tecnologie.

In varie applicazioni realizzate in differenti parti d’Europa e del mondo, è stato possibile ottenere tegole di altissima qualità con l’utilizzo degli stampi misti.

L’impiego di uno stampo inferiore con colata in resina e membrana preformata (composta da una mescola speciale adatta a condurre l’elettroshock), abbinato a uno stampo superiore con colata in gesso, ha permesso la formatura di tegole con caratteristiche estetiche proprie dello stampo in gesso.

Le tegole ottenute mantengono sulla superficie superiore, quella visibile, un’estetica perfetta, una definizione di prodotto e un aspetto superficiale impeccabile.

La superficie inferiore mantiene le caratteristiche dello stampo in resina associata a una membrana preformata, col vantaggio di contenere notevolmente i costi di produzione.

La combinazione di queste tecnologie rispetto alla tradizionale soluzione degli stampi in gesso, consente una gestione più flessibile e meno onerosa: si riduce l’investimento per un eventuale nuovo modello, necessitando di un minor numero di stampi inferiori con cambi più rapidi e meno frequenti; il reparto gesseria è più contenuto nei macchinari, nel magazzino e nel personale impegnato.

Il personale che si occupava della manutenzione degli stampi è passato al reparto gesseria, senza dover aumentare il numero degli addetti; 2. A livello produttivo le presse sono scese a 17 battute/minuto (prima 18 battute/minuto), grazie al software brevettato bongioanni vvp che consente il recupero di velocità in fase di non pressata; 3. Con il nuovo sistema si è passati da un rendimento dell’impianto dell’81% al 92%; 4. La velocità battute/minuto più bassa consente di produrre più tegole con una qualità migliore. 

An “almost-zero” cost building is an extremely high performance building with energy demand below 10 kW/m2a (Gold Class).

According to the new energy efficiency Directive 2010/31/ EU, by 31 December 2020 all buildings must meet high standards of energy saving through the use of renewable sources and must be classified as “almost zero energy” (buildings currently account for 40% of the total energy consumption of the European Union and are therefore the largest source of emissions).

The Manzoni residential development, opened in November 2012, anticipates the directive by adopting construction systems focusing on energy efficiency and a drastic reduction in maintenance and management costs. It is located in the southern area of Porto San Giorgio in the province of Fermo, just 200 metres from the sea. The development, consisting of 30 real estate units of various kinds, overlooks the equipped green area called Piazza Manzoni to the north of the municipal stadium.

An approach that combines traditional construction materials and systems with aspects of innovation was one of the principles underpinning the project, which used sustainable materials without pursuing the latest trends in structural layouts that have not yet been tested in terms of performance and durability.

La nuova Direttiva 2010/31/UE sull´efficienza energetica prevede che entro il 31 dicembre 2020 tutti gli edifici dovranno possedere elevati standard di risparmio energetico grazie all’utilizzo di fonti rinnovabili, nonché essere a energia quasi zero (ad oggi, gli immobili assorbono il 40% del consumo totale di energia dell´Unione Europea, rappresentando così la più grande fonte di emissioni).

L’intervento residenziale Manzoni, inaugurato a novembre 2012, anticipa la direttiva in questione collocandosi fin d’ora nel sistema costruttivo mirato all’efficienza energetica e alla drastica riduzione dei costi di manutenzione e di gestione.

Ubicato nella zona sud di Porto San Giorgio in provincia di Fermo, a soli 200 metri dal mare, l’immobile è composto da 30 unità immobiliari abitative di varie tipologie, è prospiciente l’area verde attrezzata denominata piazza Manzoni e si trova a Nord dello stadio comunale.

Il dialogo dei materiali e sistemi costruttivi tradizionali con l’innovazione è stato uno dei principi ispiratori del progetto che ha utilizzato materiali ecosostenibili senza tuttavia adeguarsi a schemi costruttivi di tendenza non ancora testati a livello di performance e durabilità. Oltre al raggiungimento della classe energetica A, secondo la normativa nazionale, particolare attenzione è stata dedicata al comfort e al benessere abitativo inter-

Facing bricks were chosen both for historical reasons and for their guaranteed durability and long-term performance. The solution chosen for insulation consisted of a system for anchoring the external clay shell to the reinforced concrete frame using carbon fibres and pozzolanic lime, a solution that will adopt a research protocol to evaluate its seismic structural behaviour. The lining of the external shell uses bricks with a low percentage of holes and a high mass and thermal inertia to guarantee excellent living comfort in the summer.The use of NHL 5 natural hydraulic lime for the internal plasterwork guarantees the effective breathability of the walls and excellent humidity control of the rooms, hindering the formation of microorganisms and mites. Thermal bridging on the reinforced concrete external structural parts was also insulated using natural hydraulic lime based thermal plaster to guarantee greater durability.

The internal paintwork used a Keim high-performance nonallergenic silicate-based paint to avoid the occurrence of harmful VOC residues.

Wood was chosen as the material for the external fixtures and all the subframes. To ensure optimum air recirculation, each housing unit has been equipped with a simple and low-maintenance VMC mechanically controlled ventilation system. Another key aspect of the project was the use of a passive cooling system consisting of a white cool roof with a Renolit type white mass PVC waterproofing system with the maximum capacity to reflect incident sunlight. Efforts to create an “almost zero-cost condominium” included the installation of a shared photovoltaic system on the roof capable of producing energy and generating revenues for ordinary condominium expenses. Low energy consumption was also guaranteed by the use of low power MRL type lifts. All the units are equipped with a standard home automation system to ensure ease of management and to enable further functional modules to be added.

no troppo spesso trascurato. L’impiego del laterizio faccia vista è stata una scelta precisa sia per motivi di tradizione storica, sia per le garanzie di durabilità e prestazione nel tempo.

Per l’isolamento è stato privilegiato un sistema di ancoraggio della fodera esterna del laterizio al telaio in cemento armato, utilizzando fibre di carbonio e calce pozzolanica che sarà oggetto, fra l’altro, di un protocollo di ricerca per valutarne il comportamento strutturale ai fini antisismici.

Inoltre, per le fodere interne del tamponamento esterno sono stati utilizzati laterizi con bassa percentuale di foratura a forte massa ed elevata inerzia termica allo scopo di garantire un ottimale comfort abitativo estivo. L’uso della calce idraulica naturale NHL 5 per la realizzazione degli intonaci interni, ha garantito un’efficace traspirabilità delle murature e un’ottima regolazione igrometrica degli ambienti riducendo la formazione di microorganismi e acari. Anche per l’isolamento dei ponti termici delle parti strutturali in cemento armato esterne è stato utilizzato un termo-intonaco a base di calce idraulica naturale che garantisce una maggiore durabilità nel tempo. Per la tinteggiatura interna è stata scelta una pittura ai silicati di elevata prestazione e a forte potere anallergico per evitare residui volatili VOC dannosi per l’organismo. Il legno è stato scelto come materiale per la realizzazione degli infissi esterni e per tutti i controtelai.

Per garantire un’ottimale regolazione di ricambio d’aria è stato installato in ogni alloggio un impianto di ventilazione meccanica controllata “VMC” semplice e di facile manutenzione.

Altro elemento essenziale è stata la realizzazione di un sistema di raffrescamento passivo con tetto “bianco” e freddo tipo cool roof con applicazione sulla copertura piana di un sistema di impermeabilizzazione in pvc a massa bianca, al fine di garantire la massima capacità di riflettere l’irradianza solare incidente sul tetto.

Si è cercato di realizzare un “condominio a costo quasi zero” mediante l’installazione sulla copertura di un impianto fotovoltaico condominiale che provveda a scambiare energia ed avere proventi per le spese condominiali ordinarie. Il basso consumo energetico è stato inoltre garantito dall’uso di ascensori a basso consumo.

Tutti gli alloggi sono stati provvisti di un impianto domotico di base che garantisse facilità di gestione e possibilità di ulteriori moduli espansivi di funzione. 

Both green and dry Modulus of Rupture (MOR) values are increased when using BioKeram, typically by +30% when measuring Green Strength and by +50% when measuring Dry Strength, both with a BioKeram addition of 0.6%.

products prodotti BMR The continuous investments in R&D made by BMR in more than forty years of business have firmly established the company as a key player in the sector of end-ofline technologies for tile production.

Originally set up in the 1970s as a manufacturer of loading/unloading machines and glazing lines for the ceramic industry based in Scandiano (Reggio Emilia, Italy), in the 1990s BMR decided to devote part of its resources to the machining of fired tiles and built the first rectifying, squaring and chamfering machines for porcelain tiles.

Propelled by growing success in the sector of mechanical plant engineering, in 2004 BMR acquired Cemar, a company based in Schio (Vicenza, Italy) that specialises in the production of polishing machines for the ceramic sector, and established itself as a leading supplier for the end-ofline stage of ceramic production.

Along with its complete lines, over the years BMR has introduced a range of new equipment including the Cut Crash® cutting system, Tucano® edging machines, the new Leviga and Squadra polishing and squaring machines, and most recently the innovative Squadra Dry squaring and chamfering machine, which has won major awards for its technology and eco-friendly credentials.

The high technological level of its machinery, entirely designed and built at the two Italian facilities in Scandiano and Schio, has enabled BMR to diversify into the heavy clay sector where it has earned a reputation for its expertise and quality.

place in the building sector, where technology is increasingly focused on principles of energy saving and attention to the environment. New clay blocks have been developed to improve the insulation of buildings, and these in turn require suitably insulated mortars to avoid thermal bridging effects.

This, together with the inevitable rise in materials costs, has made it necessary to perform extremely precise rectification so as to optimise the use of mortar and allow for modular composition of the exterior infill walls.

Maintaining the same focus on research and technology for which it is renowned in the ceramic sector, BMR has developed Ecobrick, a dry squaring machine for the clay brick sector.

With its rugged electrowelded steel structure, Ecobrick can be equipped with 2 or 4 calibrating spindles per side and is ready for installation of front grinding wheels of diameter 500 mm.

These characteristics allow for a considerable reduction in vibrations and maximum machining precision, while at the same time increasing production rate.

Ecobrick joins the already wide range of complete calibrating, polishing and squaring solutions offered by BMR for the end of line stage. The system testifies to the company’s efforts in the field of green-oriented R&D with a view to combining high product quality with maximum financial savings and care for the environment.

I continui investimenti in Ricerca & Sviluppo effettuati in oltre quarant’anni di attività, hanno portato all’affermazione di BMR quale azienda di riferimento nel settore delle tecnologie di fine linea nella produzione di piastrelle. Le motivazioni che hanno spinto BMR alla progettazione e alla realizzazione di tale macchinario nascono dall’attenzione verso i continui cambiamenti del settore edilizio, dove la tecnologia è sempre più strettamente legata ai principi di risparmio energetico e di rispetto ambientale. Infatti, la necessità di rendere gli edifici sempre più coibentanti ha portato alla realizzazione di nuovi laterizi che richiedono l’utilizzo di malte adeguate ed altrettanto isolanti, al fine di evitare il verificarsi di ponti termici.

Questo fattore, unitamente all’inevitabile maggiorazione dei costi dei materiali, comporta la necessità di una estrema precisione nella rettifica dei laterizi che consenta l’utilizzo della giusta quantità delle malte e che permetta la modularità di composizione delle pareti di tamponamento esterno. BMR dunque, lavorando sugli stessi parametri di ricerca ed evoluzione tecnologia che l’hanno portata a contraddistinguersi nel settore ceramico, ha realizzato Ecobrick, squadratrice a secco destinata proprio al mondo dei laterizi.

Caratterizzata da una robusta struttura in acciaio elettrosaldata, Ecobrick può essere attrezzata con 2 o 4 mandrini calibratori per ogni lato, predisposti per essere equipaggiati con mole frontali di 500 mm di diametro. Queste caratteristiche permettono una sostanziale diminuzione delle vibrazioni e la massima precisione in fase di lavorazione, portando contemporaneamente ad un aumento della velocità di produzione. Con Ecobrick si va così ad ampliare la vasta gamma di soluzioni offerte da BMR per il fine linea, con impianti completi per operazioni di calibratura-levigatura-squadratura, sottolineando ulteriormente l’orientamento dell’azienda ad investimenti in Ricerca&Sviluppo “Green oriented”, in grado di coniugare l’alta qualità di prodotto con il maggior risparmio economico e il massimo rispetto dell’ambiente.

SMAC Smac presents the last innovation for the uniform coating with rotary atomisation of roof tiles and accessories, called Multiglaze System. This method is spreading quickly and is recognised as the best method for its uniform glaze/engobe coating, both for standard pieces and the ever increasing trend for special shape/size pieces.

Smac produces for this type of application a compact machines, where the discs remains within the machinery and operation is external. The machine uses hollow rotor motors of last generation, completely designed by Smac, which guarantee high quality and high duration standards. In order to prevent non-glazed areas, these booths have numerous possible adjustments both for inclination both of the disc and the entire metal internal structure (superior and lateral towers), over and above the possibility of disc rotation in both directions.

Multiglaze is now the best offer of the market for the uniform glazing with liquid in the field of clay roof tiles and accessories.

Multiglaze is a glazing station composed by a support frame, independent conveyor, automatic glaze/engobe feeding with automatic recycle, automatic washing device with separate waste waters recovery.

The glaze/engobe nebulisation is done through 3 upper rotary units and up to a maximum of 6 lateral rotary units in order to obtain the best application on piece’ surfaces. All the rotary units are adjustable in height, inclination and spray angle. The large number of discs packs and the large number of possible settings, allows a better application of the glaze on the pieces since each discs pack will apply smaller quantities but with more nebulisation. Furthermore thanks to the application units placing the perfect coating of the entire production range of special

pieces and accessories will be guaranteed. The system is completely automatic and needs minimal maintenances and controls during its functioning.

The independent transport system allows to avoid any loss of glaze/engobe and facilitates the installation into the production line. Colour feeding is done by pneumatic pump complete of pulsations compensation system which allows the glaze constant flow and consequently an optimal application on the pieces. Besides the new automatic cleaning device allows to obtain in a few minutes a very good washing of all the internal parts of the machine with the automatic recovery of glaze and the deviation of dirty water. This allows rapid change of production and colours with very minimal worker intervention. With this application method the error possibility is very low and moreover this system is not subjected to stops for adjustments or maintenances. With constant glaze/engobe quality parameters and constant line speed, the applied weight results always uniform. The whole system is controlled by an electric command board with PLC and inverter which allows the programming and the rescue of production parameters into memorized receipt and it can be also integrated into Multiline software for the management of the entire engobing/decorating/production line.

Multiglaze è l’ultima novità presentata da Smac per la copertura uniforme di tegole e pezzi speciali con ingobbi e smalti liquidi. Questo metodo è cresciuto enormemente e viene riconosciuto il migliore per la copertura uniforme con smalti/ingobbi, sia dei pezzi standard sia della sempre più crescente varietà di pezzi speciali.

Smac, per questo tipo di applicazione, utilizza macchine compatte, nelle quali il disco rimane all’interno e l’azionamento (motorizzazione) all’esterno. La macchina utilizza motori a rotore cavo di ultima generazione, completamente progettati da Smac e che garantiscono elevati standard qualitativi e di durata. Per evitare la presenza di zone non smaltate queste cabine hanno la possibilità di numerose regolazioni sia dell’inclinazione del disco sia dell’inclinazione dell’intera struttura in lamiera (torri superiori e laterali), oltre alla possibilità di rotazione del disco nei due sensi.

Multiglaze rappresenta il meglio che oggi può offrire il mercato nel campo della smaltatura uniforme di tegole e accessori. Multiglaze è una vera e propria stazione di smaltatura composta da telaio di sostegno, trasporto indipendente, cabina di applicazione, sistema di alimentazione automatica dello smalto/ingobbio con riciclo automatico, dispositivo automatico di lavaggio con recupero separato delle acque di scarto. La nebulizzazione dello smalto/ingobbio avviene tramite 3 unità centrifughe superiori e fino a 6 unità centrifu-

ghe laterali, per ottenere la migliore stesura possibile sulla superficie dei pezzi. Tutte le singole unità centrifughe sono regolabili in altezza, inclinazione e angolo di incidenza. L’alto numero di pacchi disco e le numerose possibilità di regolazione, permettono un’ottima stesura dello smalto/ingobbio in quanto ogni singolo pacco disco applicherà quantità minori ma con maggiore nebulizzazione. Inoltre grazie alla disposizione delle unità applicative potrà essere garantita la perfetta copertura dell’intera gamma di pezzi speciali e accessori. Il sistema è completamente automatico e necessita di ridotte manutenzioni e controlli durante il suo funzionamento. Il trasporto indipendente garantisce il totale recupero dello smalto/ingobbio e facilita l’installazione sulla linea produttiva. L’alimentazione del colore avviene tramite pompa pneumatica con sistema di compensazione delle pulsazioni che permette un flusso costante dello smalto garantendo un’applicazione ottimale sui pezzi. Inoltre il nuovo sistema automatico di pulizia permette di ottenere in pochi minuti un ottimo lavaggio di tutte le parti interne della cabina con recupero automatico dello smalto e scarto delle acque di lavaggio.

Questo si tradurrà in estrema rapidità dei cambi di produzione e colore con il minimo utilizzo dell’intervento dell’operatore. La possibilità di errore con questo metodo applicativo è molto bassa e non è soggetto ad interruzioni dovute a regolazioni o manutenzioni. Con costanti parametri di qualità smalto/engobbio e costante velocità della linea, il peso applicato risulta sempre uniforme. L’intero sistema è controllato da quadro elettrico di comando con PLC e inverter che permette la programmazione e il salvataggio dei parametri produttivi in ricette memorizzabili e che può essere integrato all’interno del software Multiline per la gestione dell’intera linea di ingobbiatura, smaltatura e decorazione.
