Learn how to make your own pendants and necklaces by using quillies and embellished quillies.

First half of class will be devoted to making quillies and embellishing them with embroidery floss and beading and the second half will be devoted to assembling the pendants.

FIVE FANTASTIC FINISHES Come to learn 5 new finishing techniques. Learn how to do the embroidered Kilim (fringe) finish, suitable for oriental carpets, the herringbone finish, the gallery finish, ‘invisible whipping’ and triple whipping.

Work on a sample in class to master the techniques. This class is recommended for the intermediate rug hooker who wants to learn something different.

STEP UP YOUR HOOKING GAME This workshop is designed to give students more confidence about the “art” of hooking and focuses on developing skills as a fibre artist. The workshop is divided into two portions, one a learning and eye training session – see the values in your reference photo and learn more about hooking realistically. The second part of the workshop will be devoted to a handson exercise that puts your newfound knowledge to use. Working from visuals in the kit, you will colour two separate line drawings, one grayscale, one colour. The design discussion will help you gain confidence in your ability to create your own original patterns.

LIPPAN MIRROR MUD ART

This is a traditional mural craft of Kutch, Gujarat, India. The origin of Lippan Art is lost in the pages of history, but the art has evolved over many years with local communities keeping it alive.

Damage to hooked mats, no matter their age, can happen at any time, anywhere. Causes can be simple wear and tear, our furry animals playing with the loops, wine, candle wax and other spills, folded, stored, and forgotten about.

HOOK A MÉTIS SASH Create a 3” x 9” wall hanging depiction of a Métis Ceremonial Sash worn as a symbol of Métis heritage. We will discuss and hook the sash as done by the Métis ancestors on the rough burlap used as sacking, hand ripping our strips and hand finishing afterwards. Students are encouraged to explore the use of alternative fabrics or ‘fancy fabrics’ in the completion of a small pumpkin design which can be padded and lined as a mat or door hanger. The techniques incorporate velvet, taffeta, poly “silk”, novelty yarns, yarn and wool will be useful in future projects. “Fancy fibers’ can be used as embellishments in a wool project or more extensively.

The softness and sheen of velvet and poly ‘silk’, the knobbiness of taffeta, the whimsy of novelty yarns all can complement the muted texture of wool.

EMBED PHOTOGRAPHY IN A RUG

Think outside the box. If hooking is like painting with wool, you can do the same with photography by adding a photograph into your next rug. Rémi will guide you in doing just that. He will show examples of rugs he created and other rugs created by rug hookers who followed his workshops. You will learn about the different mediums on which to print your photograph, the best size of print to choose and practice how to embed it to best enhance your final design. Your favorite photograph will become the focus of a meaningful creative hooking adventure. Each loop will bring back the magic and memories of when you first saw your photograph and how you felt and still feel about it. Recreate the magic!

CREATING A DESIGN This will be a workshop where you can talk and ask questions about creating a design for a rug.

Hakon will bring a pattern for the rug The Wise and The Foolish Virgins to work with. Each participant gets a pattern of a virgin that they themselves must plan the colours and content of.

Each motif is approximately 18 cm x 29 cm (7” x 11”).

VAN GOGH VIGNETTE In this class, we will learn more about this innovative painter, while interpreting his lively colors and rhythmic brush strokes into our medium of rug hooking. Janet will present a simple system of color and texture planning which allows hookers to recreate images inspired by Vincent's beautiful art, while still maintaining our individual style. Class handouts will include information about Vincent Van Gogh, and illustrated "painting with wool" techniques. You will be amazed how using a simple step by step method allows you to hook in Van Gogh style with ease. Books and prints will be available for reference.

CHAKRA COLOURS BY DESIGN In this class we will cover the basics of the Chakras and the Chakra colours and work on a hands-on project as we learn. We will also discuss the benefits of incorporating the Chakra colours into our artwork.

SUE & JIM WADDINGTON SEPTEMBER 30 LUNCH SPEAKER In 1977, during a rug hooking course, Sue made a rug hooking adapted from A.Y. Jackson’s landscape painting “Hills, Killarney, Ontario (Nellie Lake).” On Sue’s suggestion, the family set out on a weeklong backcountry canoe trip. They were surprised they could locate the exact spot Jackson had sat when he did the painting. The scene before them matched the painting and Sue’s rug hooking! Thus began a family adventure which involved rug hooking, canoeing, photography, camping and fine Canadian art. Many of Sue’s hookings are inspired by Canada’s most famous artists from one hundred years ago and the modern day.

AMY OXFORD OCTOBER 1 MORNING SPEAKER & BOOK SIGNING Amy Oxford is the inventor and manufacturer of The Oxford Punch Needle and owner of The Oxford Company. She been making punch needle style hooked rugs since 1982 when she worked as an at-home rug hooker for McAdoo Rugs. Oxford traveled to teach for 26 years until founding The Oxford Rug Hooking School in Cornwall, Vermont where she taught from 2013-2023. Amy

started a punch needle teacher certification program in 1994 and there are now over 130 Oxford Instructors across the world. She is the author of seven books including her latest, Intermediate and Advanced Punch Needle Rug Hooking – Techniques, Projects, and Inspirations, written with co-author Louise Kulp and showcasing the work of 26 Oxford Certified Instructors.

HAKON GRON HENSVOLD OCTOBER 1 KEYNOTE SPEAKER On a trip in 1998 to teach weaving and felting at the NorwegianAmerican Museum in Iowa, Hakon was introduced to rug hooking. A demonstration captured his interest along with the phrase, “You can learn in fifteen minutes”. This being the only instruction ever received, Hakon has gone on to use hooked rugs as a way to express himself. Each detailed and vibrant image created from handdyed and wool yarn tells an interesting story for the viewer to unravel.

There are many reasons to exhibit your art. We can connect with a wider audience and network with other artists. Exhibiting allows us to raise awareness for our craft and perhaps inspire others or even a new generation to try rug hooking. We can deliver a message or an idea in our subject matter by provoking thought and conversation. Delve into the world of fibre art exhibitions as this group of panelists share their experiences from curating local and global exhibitions.

Betty (she/her) is a queer Toronto-based fibre artist working at the intersection of folk craft and fine art. Her ‘yarn paintings’ explore the domestic, using plants and furniture to enliven interior spaces recreated in unexpected scales and colours. She works exclusively with hand tools, blending punching, hooking and embroidery techniques and using a mix of natural and recycled materials.

Rémi started hooking when he retired in 2013 after a long career as a high school teacher. In early 2017, as a volunteer at the Barachois Historic Church, in Barachois, NB, Rémi got the idea of organizing a small exhibit of hooked cushions. The idea rapidly developed into the known today Barachois International Collection of Hooked Cushions. 320 hooked cushions from around the world representing proud and creative rug hooking artists.

Beginning at an early age with crafts like knitting and crossstitch, Leslie grew up surrounded by women with an appreciation for craft and the arts. Her love for gardening and the natural world are prevalent subjects in her work. Leslie has been juried into several exhibitions as well as the Emerging Artist Issue of Fiber Art Now magazine and most recently Celebrations 34. She has co-curated the Magnificent Bugs in Rugs exhibition with Yvonne Iten-Scott.

Fumiyo learned rug hooking while living In Canada for four years. When she moved back to Japan she showed her work in a small lobby of a bank near her home. From this, she began teaching others in 1985. Today she has a dedicated group of rug hookers who meet and exhibit their work once a year. Fumiyo was inducted into the Celebrations Hall of Fame in 2018.

Explore the therapeutic benefits of making rugs and how it has transformed the lives and work of our panelists both emotionally and physically. The repetitive rhythm of pulling or punching loops and the soft feel of our textural materials is mindful, healing and rehabilitative. Fibre art may be precise or free flowing, solitary or collaborative, contemporary or traditional but the head, mind and hand connection has numerous benefits for us all.

Each time you share your grief with others, healing occurs, and some of the grief is replaced by understanding, acceptance, and hope. We’ve all heard or read about the power that rug hooking and other fiber arts have on your brain, body, mood, nervous system, and so on. Their therapeutic benefits have long been recognized. Increasingly, the arts are being used by professionals as a treatment to heal.

Colour, texture, joy and self-compassion define Meryl Cook’s work as an artist in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. She is committed to using her own journey to encourage and teach others how to find healing through creativity and self-compassion. Her pieces exude a sense of power and a reclaiming of one’s emotional journey, changing the narrative of how to process life’s challenges. Meryl’s mission is to inspire people to find joy and a renewed sense of purpose.

Betty Ann is originally from Cheticamp, NS, world capital of the hooked rug. Cheticamp is located on Cape Breton Island, NS. When Betty Ann was but six weeks old, her mother Isabelle began learning the art of rug hooking as her own mother and grandmother had in the past. Therefore, Betty Ann is the fourth generation who took up the art industry of rug hooking and participated in the cottage industry for 57 years.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Cancellations will be accepted up to and including July 28th, 2024, with full registration and workshop fees refunded less a $50 processing fee. No cancellations will be accepted after July 28, 2024 and no refunds will be given.

If the Marriott on the Falls, at any time and for any reason, cancels our booking for the Conference, TIGHR will be entitled to cancel the TIGHR 2024 Conference and you will be given a full refund of your registration and workshop fees.
