Message from the Head of School

It seems like each of the last six school years has been marked by epic historical events, largely disruptive and tragic: Covid and its aftermath, October 7th and its aftermath, and – earlier this summer – the expansion of that conflict into open warfare with Iran. We continue to pray for a peaceful resolution to the suffering and conflict and, as of this writing, to pray for the safe return of our remaining hostages.

One small point of pride for us is the fact that we have been able to send our Senior class to Israel during each of these years, even when it has entailed pushing the trip to May instead of our usual dates in January. Whatever the month in which it takes place, the Senior Israel Experience is a true capstone to our students’ four-year journey at RZJHS. So much of the Jewish learning and living that they have experienced over the years comes together for them when they travel as a class to Israel, and the bonds they have worked to create since freshmen year are strengthened and enriched by virtue of this singular shared experience.

But coming together and bonding in this way is not as easy as it sounds. At our graduation ceremony in May, the student speakers and I reflected on one of their chosen graduation themes, a well-known quote from Rashi describing the Israelites at the moment they stood at Sinai

. “Like one person with one heart.” This phrase captures a profound notion: that this motley horde of thousands, fleeing slavery in Egypt through the wilderness, arrived not just at a destination, but at a moment of deep, shared purpose.

There is an interesting dichotomy here between individual identity and collective belonging, and it raises an important question: How do we, as a community, navigate the tension between them?

One take on Rashi’s commentary is that that the kind of unity he describes is remarkable precisely because it is not a natural state of affairs. Unity is not easily achieved, and is often difficult to sustain.

This is a lesson learned over time, and sometimes with difficulty, during the four years of high school. In the early years there is often pressure to conform and fit in, to want to be like everyone else. But we see a powerful evolution unfold over the four years. By the time students reach their senior year, individuality is increasingly embraced, not suppressed. Students begin to take pride in their uniqueness, and to value those qualities in one another. With that comes something quite different: not conformity, not uniformity, but a deep connection. A truer and more authentic – even if not perfect – unity.

Like one person with one heart, Rashi tells us: not with one mind . It speaks to a kind of unity that is respectful of, and even celebrates, individual differences – a unity that values and promotes civil discourse in which different perspectives can be safely expressed, and respected. This is, in a nutshell, the community we strive to create every day at Rochelle Zell Jewish High School.

With best wishes for the 5786 New Year,

Throughout my experience at RZ - from Model UN to sports teams and clubs - the unique, defining characteristic of an RZ education is the community, the family we become. RZ is not just your average high school, it is filled with All-School KumKum LeLe, impromptu hugs, and so many more special moments. It is these moments I hope, and I believe, we will remember forever. — Daniel Weisskopf (RZJHS ‘25)

Rochelle Zell Jewish High School

Message from the President

Dear Friends,

As I sat on the stage at graduation last year, I was deeply moved by our senior speakers and the way they captured the spirit and strength of their class. I saw more than poise and confidence; I saw thoughtfulness, resilience, and a profound connection to their Jewish identity and to each other. Listening to their reflections reminded me why Rochelle Zell Jewish High School matters. These students are not only ready for college, they are ready for the world.

As I complete my first year as President of the RZJHS Board of Directors, I do so with a deep sense of gratitude and conviction. At a time when the challenges facing Israel and the global Jewish community are escalating, RZJHS continues to prepare our students to meet the momentgrounded in knowledge, a sense of community, and pride in who they are.

RZJHS is more than a school. It is a makom kadosh - a sacred space - where learning and leadership grow side by side, and where Jewish identity is nurtured in the context of a complex and ever-changing world.

Alongside the 2025–26 Board of Directors - made up of passionate, engaged members, including several proud alumni — I am honored to support Tony Frank and our outstanding professional team in advancing this mission. For nearly 25 years, RZJHS has shaped students not only for academic success, but also to live with courage, act with integrity, and lead with purpose.

As parents of two RZJHS graduates, my wife Tami and I are personally grateful for the extraordinary education and community our sons experienced here. I also want to thank the founders, past Board members, faculty, and leaders who helped build and sustain this school over time.

To our entire community—alumni, current and past parents, students, supporters, and friends—thank you. WE NEED YOU. Your continued generosity and partnership make everything we do possible.

And to our graduates and their families: you are the heartbeat of this school. Thank you for the pride you bring to RZJHS. I hope you always carry it with you.

Go Tigers!

Warshawsky

Zell Jewish High School

Throughout the year, I have watched our community come together in so many beautiful and inspiring ways: during all school tefillah on Fridays, celebrating with the Hanukkah lunch, or the Sunny Sukkah Stop. Whether it was during the spirited pep rally, a quiet moment in the classroom, or an intense athletic game, we have created memories that will last a lifetime.

Proud to be Community

In Memory of Jack Helbig

We remember our teacher, colleague, and friend, Mr. Jack Helbig, who passed away in January.

Mr. Helbig joined the Rochelle Zell English Department in the fall of 2022 with many years of experience both as a teacher and as a journalist. He quickly endeared himself to students and colleagues with his warmth, intelligence, and good humor and will be greatly missed by all of us at Rochelle Zell Jewish High School.

“Mr. Helbig genuinely cared about his students and their creativity,” shared Nitai Gorlin (RZJHS ‘25). “He took a real interest in the many unique ways we chose to express ourselves.”

May the memory of Mr. Helbig be a blessing.

Honoring the Memory of Seth Sugar

This year, a small group of close friends—Seth Sugar’s “brothers”— came together to honor his memory in the place that meant so much to them all: the Caplan Gymnasium. Seth (RZJHS ’20) brought infectious energy, heart, and humor to everything he did, and nowhere was that more evident than on the basketball court. As a meaningful tribute, the group dedicated the home team bench in Seth’s memory.

A thoughtful gift was also made to help ensure that RZJHS students can participate in the athletics and extracurricular experiences that brought Seth so much joy.

To continue Seth’s legacy of friendship, passion, and pride in RZJHS, please consider making a gift in his memory.

New Torah Welcomed

This fall, RZJHS marked a joyous and meaningful milestone with a Hachnasat Sefer Torah, the ceremonial welcoming of a new Torah to our school. Students and faculty gathered to sing, dance, and escort the Torah under a chuppah as it was carried through campus. The celebration concluded with an inaugural reading, officially bringing the Torah into our Beit Knesset

The event took place just after Simchat Torah, beautifully aligning with the start of a new annual cycle of Torah reading and deepening our school’s connection to tradition, community, and sacred learning.

Proud to be Community

Our community continues to flourish, with students from 26 zip codes and 28 different sending schools, including both public and private schools. The 9th-grade class alone represented nine middle schools, reflecting the diversity and reach of our impact.

Thanks to our Affordability Program, more than half of our families accessed critical tuition assistance. With a student-teacher ratio of 1:15 and 90% of our faculty holding advanced degrees, our students benefit from personalized, high-caliber instruction. Every member of the Class of 2025 was accepted to college, and their destinations reflect their ambition, preparation, and sense of purpose.

Proud to be Learners

At RZJHS, students explore ideas and push boundaries. Whether in math class or the Beit Knesset, they are encouraged to question, reflect, and express themselves.

Student-led innovation defined the year across academics and the arts.

• Maimonides Moot Court team earned second place after a semester of rigorous Halakhic study, applying Jewish legal thought to real-world questions.

• Six students earned the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy, demonstrating advanced proficiency in Hebrew or Spanish.

• Debate Team celebrated major wins, showcasing sharp thinking and persuasive skills.

• Model UN team earned national recognition, reflecting RZJHS’s focus on global awareness and leadership development.

• New Culinary Arts elective fostered collaboration, as students prepared dishes that highlighted creativity, cultural identity, and confidence.

• “Playing with Light” art exhibit featured original student work that explored creativity through visual expression.

These achievements underscore the deep intellectual curiosity and academic rigor that make RZJHS a school where learners thrive.

Proud to be Leaders

Leadership at RZJHS begins with values. Across 26 clubs, students stepped up to lead initiatives that mattered to them and to our school. From running Va’ad (student government) meetings to planning holiday celebrations, they cultivated skills that will guide them far beyond high school.

These leaders created spaces for connection, elevated their peers’ voices, and fostered a culture of inclusion and pride.

Proud to be Spirited

Joy, ruach, and celebration are central to student life at RZJHS. Spirit Week, the Back-to-School Celebration, Homecoming, and Prom didn’t just offer fun—they fostered pride and belonging.

Whether dancing at prom at the Westin Hotel or dressing up for themed days (pajama day is always a Tiger favorite), students created shared memories that strengthened friendships and school identity. These moments give students space to express themselves and to feel part of something bigger than themselves.

Proud to be Athletes

RZJHS athletes lead with heart. Whether stepping onto the basketball court, crosscountry trail, or volleyball court, they practiced perseverance and embodied teamwork. With 86% of students participating in at least one sport—and many playing two or more—athletics are central to student growth.

This year brought championship moments and sportsmanship awards, but more importantly, it instilled discipline, resilience, and school pride. Our coaches fostered a culture of mentorship, and our teams formed lifelong bonds.

Fast Facts :

Adin Gillers graduated as one of the most decorated runners in Rochelle Zell history, holding multiple school records in both cross country and track. We are proud of his dedication, talent, and hard work and we can’t wait to see all he accomplishes at the next level as he continues his athletic and academic career at Johns Hopkins University.

Proud to be Jewish

Jewish life at RZJHS is immersive and intentional. Students don’t just learn about Judaism—they live it. They lead tefillah, reflect deeply during Yom HaShoah, and volunteer on Purim.

Shabbatonim and retreats offered transformative moments of community, introspection, and joy. These included:

• The Freshman Shabbaton built community through tefillah, group competitions, and senior mentorship.

• The Sophomore Shabbaton fostered purpose through learning and volunteering at CJE’s Weinberg Community.

• The Junior Boston Trip strengthened identity through Jewish history, teamwork, and shared experiences.

• The All-School Shabbaton united students through smaller mishpacha connections, zmirot (song), and an all school Maccabiah.

These experiences deepened students’ Jewish identities and cultivated a lasting connection to tradition, values, and one another.

Proud to be Explorers

This year’s Senior Israel Experience was one of the most powerful in memory. Students confronted the raw aftermath of October 7, meeting with locals in Sderot, singing at Hostage Square, and visiting the Nova Festival memorial. Amidst the grief, they found strength, solidarity, and hope.

They also hiked in Ein Gedi, biked through the Negev, explored coexistence in Haifa and a Druze village, and prayed at Yad Vashem and Har Herzl. The trip culminated in Tel Aviv with celebration and reflection.

Staying Connected:

Celebrating Our Alumni Community

Whether you call us CJ or RZ, our alumni remain an essential part of the Rochelle Zell Jewish High School family. Several recent graduates are spending their gap year in Israel, deepening their connection to Jewish life and leadership. We brought RZJHS spirit to alumni at the University of Michigan and Northwestern University, strengthening bonds across campuses.

More than 50 alumni returned for our annual Thanksgiving reunion, and graduates gathered again for pre-Shavuot learning with Rabbi Miriam Lichtenberg, hosted by Adam (CJHS ’11) and Naomi Seidenberg and made possible with the support of Rabbi Benjy Forester (CJHS ’12, current RZJHS Board Member) and Jonah Harris (CJHS ’11).

From Jerusalem to college campuses to our own halls, RZJHS alumni are learning, leading, and staying connected.

Let’s Stay in Touch! We love hearing from alumni— whether you’re visiting, sharing milestones, or staying involved. To share your news or plan a visit, reach out to Stephanie Sanderman, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, at ssanderman@rzjhs.org or 847-324-3720.

Thank You for

Powering Our Mission

Thanks to your generosity, we are proud to share that our community came together to raise over $1.84 million in support of this year’s Annual Campaign. Together, we met and exceeded our goal—and made a difference.

Your support fuels the heart of RZJHS. You helped our academic programs grow, our athletics and extracurricular activities thrive, and ensured we could provide enhanced security and our vital Affordability Program. Because of you, every eligible student had the opportunity to access a transformative Jewish high school education—regardless of financial circumstances.

Whether you’ve supported us for years or joined our community this year, we are honored to count you among our valued donors. Your belief in the power of Jewish education is what makes our mission possible. Yet, tuition alone does not cover the full cost of educating our students. With continued support from generous donors and partners like the Jewish United Fund—and from you—we can continue to shape the next generation of leaders: students who think critically, live Jewishly, and engage responsibly with the modern world.

Keep the Momentum Going

Your gift makes a lasting impact. To help us meet the ongoing needs of our students and school, please consider making a donation today.

Easy Ways to Support RZJHS Make a Difference

• Annual Campaign: Ensure excellence in education

• Tributes & Memorials: Honor loved ones with a gift

• Legacy Giving: Leave a lasting impact through your estate

This year, our grade didn’t just become more social; we became a community. In the shared laughter, the latenight conversations on the Israel trip, the moments of vulnerability, and the unwavering support we shared for each other during the college process, we created something holy… With the guidance of our incredible teachers, we have learned together in the classroom, but from each other, we have learned much more. We have learned to challenge one another, strengthen one another, and hold each other accountable in our learning and in our lives. — Ari Schwab (RZJHS ‘25)

Honor Roll

We are proud to share our Fiscal Year 2025 Donor Honor Roll. We hope you are moved by the number of donors that have made a gift to the Rochelle Zell Jewish High School Annual Fund this year. Together we make up a caring community of students, alumni, family, and friends with the same goal to support RZJHS. Thank you for your generosity, care and commitment.
