It may be a little late but I don’t want to miss the opportunity to wish a Happy New Year to everyone in the Landsec | Aspire family. And speaking of family, I hope you don’t feel too frazzled by sharing weeks in a confined space with your loved ones!

With this in mind, in this issue of One we have a few tips to help raise your spirits. We’ve included advice on home schooling, fitness and general wellbeing so let’s see if we can all get through this latest lockdown together.

As gyms are shut and exercise outside our homes is currently limited to once a day, we all need to be inventive to ensure that we keep our bodies fit and our moods high. However, with the

vaccines rolling out, we are surely on the home stretch now, so we also take a look at the plans that are in place to ensure the safe reopening of our offices and the return of staff and Customers to our properties.

Let’s keep our chins up, stay safe and prioritise the health and happiness of our nearest and dearest.

Make the most of the people you have around you now, and make a fuss, albeit a virtual one, of those you currently don’t.

With schools out again, at least for most pupils, teachers are working incredibly hard to continue lessons online and keep students motivated. However with children now off full time, it’s extremely tough for parents, especially for those working from home with younger children. If you’re pulling your hair out, or just watching it go grey by the day, here are some tips that might help...

Keep to a routine Many students are following their school timetable, even though they are learning at home. If your children don’t have a specific timetable, try to make one and then stick to it as best you can.

This gives a structure to your children’s day and brings a little certainty for them in an uncertain world. Making sure kids get to bed on time, so that they get sufficient sleep, is a key part of this routine.

Be interested Children show more interest and work harder if their parents or carers engage with the topics that they are learning. For primary school kids, try to read with them. Either reading to children or listening to them read as often as you can will enhance not only their skills but also your bond.

Give your child responsibility

Check out the Beeb

Depending on their age and ability, try to give your kids some responsibility for their own learning.

Once you’ve gone over the basics of a topic, set them a task and give them a set amount of time to complete it.

Ask them to research a particular subject and then get them to present their findings to you in the form of writing, speech, drawing or a model.

For the third national lockdown, the BBC is helping by providing a whole bunch of content to help with home schooling.

Keep them active Taking breaks is important and you should encourage your child to move away from where they are working when they have downtime, with some fresh air if possible.

Limit screen time

On TV (also available on iPlayer) — 3 hours of primary school programmes from 9am to midday every weekday on CBBC, including Bitesize Daily and favourites such as Horrible Histories and Celebrity Supply Teacher.

— 2 hours of programmes for secondary school students on BBC Two every weekday, as well as other relevant shows such as drama adaptations, science shows and history programmes.

Be aware that kids will be spending more time on computers and other devices than they would if they were at school, so it’s a good idea to limit the amount of screen time they have overall. You won’t be popular at first but kids will soon find playing with Lego or board games fun, especially if you play with them.

Online Check out the BBC Bitesize resources for home schooling, developed with educational experts to meet the needs of the curriculum.

Go to www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize, click on Start A Lesson and then select the year group you want. There are also GCSE revision guides for students in Years 10 and 11, as well as advice on wellbeing.

Social media BBC Bitesize also has Facebook and Twitter social media accounts to help keep parents and teachers up to date on info such as TV broadcast times.

Cut ‘em some slack!

You are probably not a trained teacher and your children are not normally home learners. So remember to cut yourself and your kids some slack.

There will be good days and bad days, and that really is OK!

Many of the required safety measures have been in place since the first lockdown, such as floor markings for social distancing, one-way systems, hand sanitisation stations, perspex screens in the reception areas and limits on lift occupancy. However, additional measures will be required for some of our buildings’ facilities and systems when the lockdown is eased.

These include procedures and tests for our water treatment, gas supply, electrical, heating/cooling and fire protection systems.

As and when buildings are reoccupied, we will remind Customers and Service Partners to advise us of confirmed positive Coronavirus cases. This means that we can undertake deep cleaning (including fogging) in the affected areas and keep everyone informed, so that they can comply with Track & Trace procedures. NHS QR codes are displayed in the reception areas of our properties for those who wish to use them. It will be more important than ever for guests to be pre-registered on the visitor management system. Service Partners will need to inform Customers, and gain their consent, for entry into their office spaces to undertake any work required.

Rest assured that there will continue to be regular cleaning of all high-touch points and areas with high traffic flows.

Aspire security teams will also continue to remind Customers and visitors about social distancing guidelines in any public areas.

Although the precise timing of the return of Customers and Service Partners to the Landsec portfolio after the lockdown remains unclear, we are making careful preparations behind the scenes.

By planning all the control measures that we will implement when the time comes, we can ensure that we welcome Customers and Aspire members back smoothly, promptly and above all, safely.

Pioneering water safety Water quality assessment is a particularly important task before re-occupation of buildings due to the possible risk of Legionella, a common bacterium that can infect the water systems of large buildings.

Contaminated water systems can release aerosolised droplets and people who breathe these in can contract Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially fatal form of pneumonia.

Back in 2019, Landsec was the first company in the UK to trial new technology to detect Legionella in a rapid test developed by Spartan Bioscience. The on-site testing gives results in 45 minutes, avoiding the need to send samples to a lab and wait up to two weeks for the results. This speedy technology has been successfully used ever since to keep the Landsec | Aspire team and the London portfolio healthy.

It significantly improves water safety because Legionella can grow to outbreak levels in as little as a week, which means that the traditional laboratory method is often too slow to prevent a problem.

Top tips for lockdown Switching off is one of the most difficult things to do in the modern world, but vital for keeping on top of your work-life balance.

As we navigate the third national lockdown together, we want to explore some of things Landsec | Aspire family members can do to continue to feel both physically and mentally well.

In the lockdowns last year, statistically many people across the UK struggled.

Whether it was putting on weight, drinking more alcohol or just generally feeling anxious, many found that their wellbeing was negatively affected. Back then, we had good weather to lift our spirits and encourage us to get outside and exercise but now that the days are

colder and darker, it’s more important than ever to make your wellbeing a priority.

Even the sound of the word ‘lockdown’ is quite depressing but try to think positively about this time as being a potential springboard to a new lifestyle. There are many things you can do to enhance your wellbeing, but you don’t have to do them all!

Go easy on yourself by experimenting with what appeals to you and just taking some small steps to improve your fitness, diet and mental health.

Have a routine

Eat well

Take exercise

Lack of a daily routine can contribute to negative feelings and may also disrupt your sleep. Try to keep to a routine, even if it’s different to the one you had before the pandemic. Getting up on time, having regular meal breaks and going to bed at a time that allows for 7-9 hours of sleep will give your day structure and help you to feel positive about life.

A varied diet of nutritious foods will boost both your physical and mental health. The key here is making time to plan your meals and the shopping you’ll need to cook from scratch. Try to eat your 5-a-day portions of fruit and veg, which can be fresh, tinned, dried or frozen. Replace any snacks that are high in sugar, salt or fat with healthier options such as fruit, nuts or seeds.

Taking vitamin supplements is a good idea, especially vitamin D during the winter months when you won’t get much sunlight. This is particularly valuable for those with dark skin or aged over 65.

This is really important if you’re working from home, as you won’t be getting your step count up through your daily commute. As the current lockdown allows only one session of exercise outside your home each day, try to take this before work or during your lunch break so that you can boost your mood by getting some fresh air in daylight. As well as walking, running or cycling outside in your local area once a day, you can take unlimited exercise in your garden (if you have one) or even in your home. If you’re mostly sat at a computer screen for work, get up and move about or do some stretching regularly.

Be careful to exercise within your means and don’t overdo it.

Keep hydrated

Switch off

Invest in relationships

Given that over two thirds of your body is water, it makes sense that it’s important to stay hydrated. Hydration affects both your mood and your energy levels, so aim to drink 6-8 glasses of water or other healthy fluids a day (that’s about 1.2 to 1.5 litres). You can have sugar-free drinks, lower-fat milk, tea or coffee instead of water, but preferably drink the decaffeinated brands. Also, try to limit the amount of alcohol you drink, as regularly drinking too much is linked to a number of health issues. Both men and women should drink no more than 14 units a week, which is 6 pints of average-strength beer or 10 small glasses of low-strength wine. If you’re attempting to cut down, try having specific drink-free days every week.

Even if you’re juggling multiple responsibilities as an employee, or flitting between work, dinner and nappy changes as a parent or carer, make some time for yourself! Watch a movie, take a hot bath or reconnect with nature on a walk outside. Try to be aware of changes in your mood and, if listening to the news makes you anxious, perhaps decide to tune in just once a day or every other day. Be kind to yourself and take things one day at a time. If you are struggling, reach out for help to your partner, a relative, a colleague, your employer, your GP or a charity such as Mind, Samaritans or CALM. There is ALWAYS help at hand.

Whether it’s relationships with loved ones in your household or support bubble, or those with friends and family you cannot currently meet in person, do your best to invest time and effort in keeping the communication up. If you’re feeling Zoom-weary, just send a text or e-mail to reach out with news and check everyone is OK. Looking out for vulnerable family members or neighbours can help boost your own sense of purpose. Also, try to make time to engage with your children in something other than home schooling.

Maybe play a game, watch a TV show or bake some treats. Simply ask them ‘How are you feeling today?’

Online fitness programmes If you need a bit of help to kick-start your fitness drive, there is a huge amount of support available online. Here are just a few examples...

— Joe Wicks has returned with his PE with Joe, streamed live on his YouTube channel (The Body Coach TV) at 9am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The sessions are now shorter (20 minutes) and suitable for all ages.

— If dance is more your thing, get moving with Strictly star Oti Mabuse through dance classes on her YouTube channel, Oti Mabuse Official. Get your little ones dancing too with Oti’s Boogie Beebies on BBC’s CBeebies and iPlayer.

— Take a look at the BBC Sport website, which features a ‘staying active in lockdown’ area with links to content with different fitness activities for you to try.

— If you fancy your chances in fitness challenges against sporting heroes, check out some of Nike’s Living Room Cup trials that are available on YouTube.

— Want to start running?

Download the free Couch to 5K app (backed by the NHS) if you’re a running newbie and want to raise your fitness level in steps. If walking is more your level, the NHS-endorsed Active 10 app is also free and tracks walking intensity and time, rather than just distance or steps.

— There are so many great fitness apps to try, some of which have free trial periods. They often provide a supportive community to help keep you motivated. Take a look at Strava (running and cycling app that uses GPS tech to record and compare users’ performance), Freeletics (HIT and HIIT methods), Jennis (programmes from Olympian athlete, Jessica Ennis-Hill), Body Coach (fitness sessions and meal plans by Joe Wicks), Fiit (fitness sessions, yoga and pilates), Fitbit Premium (for use with

the popular fitness trackers), Nike+ Training Club (rigorous workouts) and Peloton (not just cycling).

Whatever floats your boat, whether you’re artistic, musical or crafty, here are some ideas to spark your interest and unleash your creativity...

— Get musical with live online lessons or archived video content to help you. There are tutorials for beginners upwards on playing instruments, singing and music theory. For the kids, Myleene Klass has restarted her free online music lessons (Myleene’s Music Klass) for lockdown number 3.

— Learn a new skill with the help of online resources or apps. Whether you’re interested in photography, computer coding, make-up application, knitting or ballroom dancing, there is a load of content out there for you. There are also specialist apps for learning a new language such as Duolingo, which is free (gratis, libre, kostenlos, vrij!)

— I f you’re arty, check out sites with online drawing lessons such as Drawspace, which provides both free and paid tutorials from beginner to advanced level. The YouTube channel WowArt is another source of art inspiration.

Throw in the pressure of a global pandemic and it’s clear that we are all more likely to experience some anxiety, loneliness or mental health issues right now.

Research has shown that almost 1 in 5 adults are likely to be experiencing some form of depression during the time of Covid-19, compared to around 1 in 10 before the pandemic. So, if you are

feeling anxious or suffering with your mental health, the first thing to realise is that you are not alone. The second thing to appreciate is that there is help available. As well as support for mental wellbeing available from government and charitable organisations, many of our Landsec | Aspire Service Partners provide Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) and train some of their employees to be Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs).

Hats off to Aspire It’s time for a shout-out to some Service Partners who are setting a great example through mental health initiatives:

What support is available?

You will need to check with your employer but most Service Partners offer access to an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) through a specialist provider, such as Health Assured or AXA Health. These schemes can provide you with confidential support services for a wide range of issues that may be affecting your wellbeing, such as: — Relationship or childcare problems — Medical issues — Addiction — Financial difficulties or debt — Domestic abuse —C onsumer, insurance or housing issues — Legal problems — Work-related issues and stress

Although face-to-face support is currently suspended due to coronavirus, there is still telephone or video support available from fully trained and qualified counsellors. This helpline service is usually available 24/7, 365 days a year, with the advisers offering emotional support and, if required, referring you to a doctor, nurse, financial expert, lawyer or other specialist. Counselling can usually also be offered via e-mail or live chat channels. All support is supplied in the strictest confidence.

Most EAP providers also give members access to an online portal and app with resources for emotional support, health checks, medical information, fitness advice and personal coaching.

There may also be support videos and webinars on various topics.

Rapport recently supported mental health by holding a #BrewMonday event. This campaign from the Samaritans aims to encourage people to stay connected by having a virtual cuppa. Of course, it doesn’t have to be on a Monday but the idea is to get folk chatting via video call using platforms such as Zoom, Skype, Teams or WhatsApp – or even a good, old-fashioned landline call.

Bidvest Noonan has launched a Wellbeing Wednesday campaign to introduce its Mental Health First Aiders to staff, with one MHFA being profiled each week.

Jaguar Building Services has compiled a comprehensive list of support available from statutory bodies, charities and via apps for a wide range of wellbeing issues.

With service descriptions, contact details and web links, this is a fantastic resource for employees in need of support.

Many of the Aspire Service Partners also train certain members of staff to become Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs).

This usually entails undertaking accredited training programmes and completing a qualification. With many Aspire members not currently able to see information in the usual workplace poster sites, Service Partners are making great efforts to promote the services of their MHFAs to staff through digital channels.

Reach out If you are feeling stressed or anxious, try to reach out for help. Contact a Mental Health First Aider (MHFA) in your organisation, if you can. Ask your employer about any support available to you through an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) or for information on other sources of support.

If you feel able to, increase your social interaction by building more connections with your colleagues, as this will have a positive impact on your

wellbeing as well as theirs. Of course, there are limited opportunities in lockdown but even a virtual chat with your team members – or with friends and family – is likely to lift your spirits and give them a boost as well.

Time to Talk Day: 4th Feb Look out for Time to Talk Day 2021, which takes place on 4th February and encourages everyone to have a conversation about mental health in order to help end the stigma surrounding it. This is an annual event from Time to Change, an organisation working to change the way we think about and act on mental health problems.

The campaign slogan is The Power of Small, demonstrating that a small conversation about mental health has the power to make a big difference.

Be kind Remember to be kind to yourself and others – anyone can be having a bad day, week or month. Being kind to others can often make you feel better. In fact, there is scientific evidence of the positive effects of doing something kind, as well as being on the receiving end of a kind act – or even just witnessing it.

If you want to test this theory out, there is no better time than during Random Acts of Kindness Week from 14th to 20th February. The Wednesday of this week (17th) is Random Acts of Kindness Day and if you need some ideas on how to be kind, you’ll find a load of inspirational examples on the website of the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation.

Congratulations to our Service Partner, NG Bailey, as the company enters its centenary year. Established in Leeds in 1921 with just 12 staff undertaking domestic electrical installations, today NG Bailey is the UK’s leading independent engineering and services business, with over 2500 employees.

Founded by Noel Grimshaw Bailey, the company remains familyowned and works across a variety of sectors within the construction and infrastructure industry.

Over its 100 years, NG Bailey has worked on a number of important projects including crucial military schemes during the second World War; the Windscale, Sizewell B and Hinkley Point C nuclear facilities; the Millennium Dome; and, in 2020, the NHS Nightingale Hospitals in Harrogate, Manchester and Cardiff.

A round of applause for our Service Partner, NJC, which has been providing invaluable cleaning services throughout the pandemic including a 4-man, fast-response Covid-19 team.

NJC’s specialist Covid-19 technicians are fully trained and have the required PPE and disinfection equipment, including electrostatic spraying devices to ensure that all areas are reached with the appropriate virucidal disinfectants.

As we strive to minimise the risk posed by the pandemic within the London portfolio, Aspire’s high-quality Cleaning Service Stream has never been so vital. The whole NJC team has amassed a huge amount of knowledge and experience in dealing with Coronavirus, which it has channelled into the cleaning of areas with

suspected infection and those needing preventative measures.

Ongoing daily routines include the sanitisation of high-touch points (such as hand rails, door handles, lift buttons and light switches) and high-footfall areas (such as reception spaces and washrooms). At all times, the safety of Aspire colleagues and Customers is the number one priority.

Those of you trying to undertake home schooling will know that it is a real challenge that I, for one, am failing miserably at. It has made us appreciate teachers a whole lot more, as well as making vodka on cornflakes an acceptable breakfast staple – practically one of our ‘5 a day’!

There is, however, the constant worry that this missed time in formal education is going to set the kids back for years to come. Looking on the bright side, it’s the same for everyone, so at least the benchmark for brightness across the whole nation is going to be that bit lower!

Life is not the competition that social media makes it out to be, so don’t try to compete. Chill out and accept that sometimes it’s OK to take a break while the little darlings watch Wallace and Gromit for 6 hours straight... or so I tell myself!

If we come out of lockdown and my little boys are still unable to master quadratic equations, do trigonometry or know who invented the steam engine but are safe, happy and healthy, I’ll be more than alright with that.

On the plus side, I have really enjoyed spending more time at home. As someone who, before lockdown, would leave before 6am and get home after 8pm due to a long commute, being able to be a more regular part of the bedtime routine has been extremely rewarding.

It has also allowed us to prepare and eat meals together, and we’ve really enjoyed watching Jamie Oliver’s Keep Cooking and Carry On. Jamie says you can swap out any of the ingredients you don’t have

My lockdown lessons — If you’re on an important Microsoft Teams call with Senior Execs, it is difficult to explain away the deafening screech of a 2-year-old from the next room, requesting in a clear and firm tone: “Daddy, come and wipe my bum bum”!

— At any moment, you may be interrupted by a foul-mouthed sock puppet explaining that it’s being chased by a horde of Enderman (for non-parents, it’s a Minecraft thing).

— Be prepared to be repeatedly shot in the ear with Nerf guns, normally during an important call. It’s as if they stalk my diary!

— Understand that Kylo Ren may disregard the Stay at Home message and turn up to cut you in half with a lightsaber for being a rebel sympathiser...

On your bike!

Customers at 80-100 Victoria Street are enjoying the benefits of increased bicycle parking spaces.

“In response to Customer feedback, we’ve almost trebled the number of bike spaces, from 112 previously to over 300,” explained Landsec Senior Workspace Manager Madeleine Velupillai.

Different types of bicycle racks have been installed to meet the needs of various users and styles of bike, with each parking system having an instruction board detailing how it

should be used. Other additions include improved lighting in the bike storage area, security fencing with a sliding door and plug sockets for e-bikes.

With more people wanting to cycle for sustainability reasons, to get fit and to reduce the risk of Coronavirus infection, the installation of the bike racks has proved very timely. “Customer feedback so far has been very positive,” said Madeleine. “We’re now looking to launch the electric vehicle recharging scheme and improve locker provision at 80-100 Victoria Street!”

Thanks to some recently introduced schemes, cycling in the City has never been a more attractive option for visitors.

QUIZ TEAMS PROVE TO BE

Virtually brilliant With tier restrictions in place before Christmas, the Landsec | Aspire seasonal quiz moved online for the first time on 18th December and turned out to be a highly successful and fun event.

Winners on the night were the Virtually in Tiers team, although rivals I Thought it was Speed Dating 2 had been in the lead before some technical gremlins froze them out and forced them to rejoin. They ended up in third place, with Magnificent 7 finishing as runners-up.

Eleven teams exercised their grey matter over 8 rounds of 8 questions each on topics from General Knowledge and Sport to Who am I? and Guess the Song. The quiz, organised by Landsec Assistant Workspace Manager Kelly Barlow, was hosted on Kahoot, with team members playing remotely and conferring via their own chat groups.

Congratulations to the winning team – Louise Ody, Chan Pang Chung, Marc Myers, James Carragher, Andy Slatter and Hiren Patel – in what proved to be a closely fought and friendly battle of the brains.
