I’m absolutely delighted that in this edition of Aspire One magazine we are able to announce our brand-new partnership with Caxton Youth Organisation. After the disruption of Covid, we have finally reached the point where we can plan and participate in fundraising events together.

This makes a meaningful charity partnership possible at last. Voted for by you, the Aspire community, Caxton Youth provides fantastic services and facilities for young people with disabilities at both its base in Pimlico and its residential activities centre in Surrey. We have some exciting events planned to support this worthy charity, so keep an eye out for details soon.

This month’s issue also introduces two new members of the Landsec team. Martina Jisova and Kick Douglas have both joined us as Flexible Workspace Managers with Myo. Martina will be looking after Myo at 123 Victoria Street, while Kick is responsible for Myo at Liverpool Street.

I hope you enjoy looking at the great gallery of photos from the Aspire Quiz Night held on 27 April.

Congratulations to the winners and thank you all for supporting the raffle to kick-start our fundraising for Caxton Youth.

The stakes were high as 14 teams of six competed for top spot at the Aspire Quiz Night held on 27 April. The event took place at The Albert, a Grade II-listed Victorian pub in Victoria.

Mark Heppelthwaite, Non-Executive Director for NJC, did a fantastic job as quizmaster, with everyone having to rack their brains and dig deep into their general knowledge.

Aspire colleagues enjoyed food and drink as they mulled over the questions and deliberated the strategy of when to play their all-important joker cards. In a closely fought contest, joint winners on the night were the teams The Brainy Bunch (from Rapport) and SuperNova (comprising several Service Partners).

There was also a raffle, which raised an amazing £500 for our new charity partner, Caxton Youth, so a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who bought a ticket.

Dirk Talsma Managing Director of Rapport Guest Services.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I’m interested in anything related to food and beverage – good restaurants, vineyards, farmers’ markets and so on. I also love to travel and would describe myself as a food tourist. I’m passionate about any food or drink that is an art form to produce, such as wine, coffee and whisky. Unfortunately I don’t have as much time as I’d like to devote to these passions.

What would you say is your greatest achievement?

That will always be my daughter, who is almost 13. It’s just remarkable to watch her grow up and see her become the person she is turning into. I’m exceptionally proud of her.

Do you have any mantras in business or in life?

I think it’s important to measure your success in your own way, not in the way someone else measures their success.

Are you a fan of anything or anyone?

I love Formula 1. Being Dutch myself, I’m a big fan of Max Verstappen. He is relentless in the pursuit of his goals.

To operate at that high level you need every detail to come together, which needs a lot of work and talent.

I’ve been to a few F1 races including last year’s Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest, which was incredible. I also admire Barack Obama; he is inspirational for his achievements and also for his ability to look at things from different perspectives, and to educate rather than judge.

What’s on your bucket list?

The Monaco Grand Prix. I’d also love to do a motorbike trip across the USA on Route 66, stopping at all the vineyards!

Do you have any regrets?

I had planned to spend a year or two working on a cruise ship after graduating from university but I was lured away by a management post in London. While I’m grateful for opportunity and everything it led to, it would have been the perfect time to travel the world with little responsibility.

What’s your all-time favourite movie?

The Green Mile.

What was your first ever job?

Harvesting potatoes by hand on a farm at the tender age of 11. This was in the Netherlands. Until I was 9, we lived in Saudi Arabia and Dubai, where my Dad worked as an engineer, and we were there during the first Gulf War. Then I went back to Holland for 10 years before moving to London for work and then going to Leeds Met University. And then I stayed – I love the UK and it’s definitely home, as I’ve lived here longer than anywhere else.

What would you say is your best skill in business?

I think I would say that I’m relatable and that I have the ability to change my attention very quickly from one thing to another.

What’s your favourite part of your working routine?

Interacting with our ambassadors, as we call our Rapport staff. I attend every ‘Welcome, Engage, Impress’ company induction session, which we hold every two weeks, to meet the new recruits. We also hold ‘DM the MD’ (Direct Message the Managing Director) get-togethers every other month. These are usually held in a London hotel and a group of 10 ambassadors can ask me anything at all. We have great discussions and it enables me to understand how things are on the ground and what we can do better.

And what’s your least favourite part?

I’m a very early riser; I get up at 3.45am most days and start work at 4.30, as I can get some clear thinking done at this time. The downside of an early start is that there is an hour after lunch that is very tough indeed!

Being held at Vauxhall Rhino Turf in Lollard Street, it will have all your Sports Day favourites – blindfold egg & spoon, 3-legged and sack races, as well as space hopper and piggy-back challenges, relays, tug of war and dodgeball. Plus you can enjoy a BBQ afterwards.

Aspire ONE COMMUNITY

We’re delighted to announce that our new charity partner is Caxton Youth Organisation.

A registered charity based in Westminster, Caxton Youth offers a number of services and facilities designed to improve the lives of young people with disabilities.

It operates a youth club at its base in Pimlico, which provides a fun and safe space for young people to learn essential life skills. Caxton Youth also has a residential site on the River Wey in Surrey, known as Midge Island, which is used for outdoor activities with small groups.

This is a fantastic charity that is doing great work to improve the lives of youngsters living close to our buildings in Victoria, so we’re very excited to begin our partnership with them. You can get to know the organisation better by reading the special feature in next month’s issue.

There will be a number of opportunities for Aspire members to get involved with projects to support the charity – both in terms of work to improve its facilities and raising funds for its vital work – so watch this space.

A big Landsec | Aspire welcome to Martina Jisova and Kick Douglas, who have joined us as Flexible Workspace Managers with Myo. Myo provides versatile workspace for customers on flexible leases, offering anything from 10 to 100 workstations.

Martina will be looking after Myo at 123 Victoria Street, while Kick will take care of Myo Liverpool Street.

Both Martina and Kick are joining Aspire from a flexible workspace background, so they are experienced in providing an excellent customer experience in this sector.

Having gained a master’s degree in International Real Estate, Kick Douglas moved from rural Lincolnshire to London with the idea of joining a property firm of some kind. He began working for Knotel, which was a start-up at the time. “Although starting off in the real estate team,” he explains, “it was here that I moved into flexible workspace management and have been working in this area ever since. I have very much enjoyed working with customers, vendors and the team; interacting with people and building great relationships

has always been incredibly fulfilling.”

Kick loves everything to do with sport and says, “Anything with a slight competitive edge between friends is always entertaining!” Despite now living in London, he remains interested in the rural economy and the outdoors. “I’m looking forward to meeting more of you in the coming weeks,” he says. “Please come and say ‘Hi’ at Dashwood if you are in the area!”

Martina Jisova joined the Myo team at the beginning of April.

Prior to joining Landsec, she worked for Fora Space Limited for over three years. “I love my job because I love working with people,” she says.

“I truly enjoy working on building strong relationships with our members and my team too, of course!”

Martina is passionate about cycling and loves spinning. She also enjoys boxing and walks with her sausage dog, Otis. She says, “I’d love to meet as many of you as possible, so please stop by when you’re next in Victoria.”

AspireHarriers Running Club

Back by popular demand!

We’re open to everyone and embrace all levels of ability.

Thanks to the efforts of Charles Walden of NJC, the Aspire Running Club is back!

The club will run every other week for three months, starting on Wednesday 15 June.

The location will be Battersea Park and the distance will be 5km. Please arrive at 5.30pm for a warm-up, ready for a 6.00pm start.

The Aspire Running Club is for everyone and embraces all levels of ability, so you can run, jog or walk (allow an hour if you’re planning to walk). There is also a bar located nearby for anyone who would like to stay for a social drink afterwards.

Charles is keen to raise some funds for our charity partner, Caxton Youth, so there is a suggested sponsorship target of £50 per participant for those coming regularly.

However, it’s a fun club and Aspire colleagues are welcome to come along to give it a try.

Pride

Next month is Pride Month, when the LGBT+ community is celebrated worldwide.

Why June? Well, Pride events mark the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which took place in Greenwich Village, New York, in 1969. So June is a chance to celebrate how far society has come since then, as well as to think about continuing the journey of progress. And all this can be done, if you wish, with plenty of rainbow flags, face paint and glitter!

The Landsec | Aspire family works hard to develop and maintain an inclusive culture, so look out for local events next month and get involved.

Maybe you could become an ally with the LGBT+ Allies network.

An ally is someone who does not necessarily identify as part of a particular group but who works to end discrimination by supporting that group. For more information, e-mail aspire@landsec.com.

MENTAL HE ALTH AWARENESS WEEK

H ow are yo u to day?

T

The theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week, which took place from 9-15 May, was Loneliness and Aspire members got together to raise awareness of the issue.

According to the Mental Health Foundation, one in four adults feel lonely some or all of the time.

Loneliness can make you feel anxious or depressed, so it has a big impact on your mental health.

While anyone can experience loneliness, there are certain risk factors that increase your chances of experiencing severe and lasting loneliness. These include bereavement, being single or living alone, unemployment, having a long-term health condition or disability, being a carer and being LGBTQ+.

If you feel lonely, there are practical steps you can take to help yourself. A good place to start is the Mental Health Foundation website (www.mentalhealth.org.uk), where you can read personal stories and find useful resources. You can also seek support from the Mental Health First Aiders in your workplace.

Aspire colleagues at NJC celebrated Mental Health Awareness Week with ‘Tea Time’ on Monday 9 May, enjoying tea & cake while talking about mental health and having a good old natter.

Active commuting On 29 June, three intrepid cyclists aim to inspect as many of the cycle facilities in the London Portfolio as possible.

Louise Ody (Workspace Manager), Ieva Botes (Senior Workspace Manager) and Dave Payne (Operational Risk Manager) will cycle from Dashwood to other sites in the City before heading over to the Landsec properties in Victoria.

The exercise is planned in response to recent Customer Pulse Surveys, which gave valuable feedback about some of our facilities. Although we always keep our front-of-house areas looking immaculate, the back-of-house areas in some of our older properties may be in need of a refresh. Louise, Ieva and Dave will be looking at how welcoming each cycle area is in terms of signage, brightness and cleanliness. Their findings will form the basis of work to upgrade any areas that would benefit from investment.

Their journey is expected to take most of the day and they each have some 20 miles of extra pedalling to make it into central London from their homes in the suburbs and back again!

Accolade for Claudia Nunes Many congratulations to Claudia Nunes, Receptionist with Rapport at Nova, who made it to the final 10 in the Corporate Receptionist of the Year (#CROTY) awards.

Although she didn’t ultimately win, it is a huge achievement to be shortlisted as one of the 10 finalists in this prestigious competition. Dirk Talsma, Managing Director of Rapport, commented: “Being part of the judging panel and having judged over 120 entries over the last three years, I cannot begin to explain what an incredible achievement this is.

We are very proud of Claudia.”

As well as having to complete an application form and submit a short video clip, Claudia had to attend an

assessment interview with various role-play scenarios at the final stage of the competition. The winner – also a Rapport receptionist – was then revealed at the awards ceremony, held in the evening on 11 May (International Receptionists’ Day).

In her finalist profile, Claudia said: “I love meeting and talking to new people, helping others and brightening up their day by spreading my positive energy. Providing a personalised service gets me out of bed every morning.”

As a finalist, Claudia will receive a complimentary place on the one-day, Condeco Certified Professional (CCP) front-of-house training course.

Principle wins European award Principle Cleaning Services recently won an award at the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards 2022.

Animal magic Two Aspire members are showing true community spirit by volunteering at an animal sanctuary.

Jay Nel (Account Manager at Nova) and Denis McCormick (Fabric Technician) from Jaguar Building Services donate their time and skills at the New Hope sanctuary in Herne Bay, Kent.

The 12-acre facility is home to around 300 rescued animals from dogs and cats to horses, pigs, cows, goats, sheep, birds, foxes and even llamas.

The site is an old farm purchased two years ago, so some of the facilities are in a state of disrepair. “Denis and I

have been helping to complete tasks over weekends with other volunteers and the owners to get the place back up to standard,” explains Jay. “We have installed additional outdoor electrical circuits to supply the electric fencing and built multiple new shelters for the bird enclosures. We’ve also constructed a goat playground for over 20 goats, to keep them occupied. The sanctuary is 100% self-funded through donations and, with the vet bills being an eye-watering amount each month, we are more than happy to do our little bit to support it.”

The company was revealed as the winner in the category ‘Best Use of Smart Technology by Service Providers’ at the awards ceremony in Brussels on 28 April. Tom Lloyd, Principle’s Deputy CEO, and the Principle team received the award at the gala dinner event, where leading service providers, manufacturers and distributors came together to celebrate the very best in the cleaning and hygiene industry.

The accolade was awarded to Principle for its PCS Connect workflow system installed at Dashwood. PCS Connect is an innovative technology platform that allows washroom cleaning schedules to be optimised, based on footfall and usage. In next month’s Aspire One magazine – a technology special issue – we’ll explore how this data-driven cleaning system works.

Many congratulations to Principle, which also scooped the ‘Rising Star’ award, for this fantastic achievement.

First-class feedback The Aspire team at New Street Square received fantastic feedback from a customer recently.

An employee from Tilney, who was leaving the building after four years on site, made the effort to speak to reception staff to express his thanks to the whole team.

He praised Aspire members for being accommodating, professional and polite, adding that he appreciated how much goes on behind the scenes. Congratulations to everyone at NSS on this wonderful feedback, which proves you’re driven to provide excellent customer service!

Members of the Aspire front-of-house teams celebrated International Receptionists’ Day on 11 May with some yummy cupcakes.

The Aspire network pulled together to turn a great idea from Ivan Riesgo, Cluster Supervisor at 80 Victoria Street, into reality recently.

He suggested that the chocolate left over from Easter at receptions across the London Portfolio could be collected and donated to refugees in Ukraine. A bit of research resulted in finding a handy donation point run by UCL’s School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES), which has close ties with Ukraine. The volunteers at SSEES were thrilled to receive a treat for refugee families and were very grateful. Well done to everyone involved.

Congratulations to the Dashwood Aspire team, for winning our Player of the Month award.

When a major waste leak occurred recently, as reported in last month’s One Magazine, the team showed a united spirit by working TogetherAsOne to resolve the issue quickly and safely.

“The whole team went above and beyond by providing an immediate response and quick turnaround to get specialist contractors in to survey the areas and then follow up with a deep clean across several shifts,” says Jordon Joseph, Workspace Manager at Dashwood. “This clean-up allowed us to alleviate the smell issue and safely access the area to commence our reinstatement of the showers and a survey for the replacement of plant.”
