Grief

→ Growth

Imagine a world where every youth could walk the streets, laughing carelessly with a soccer ball under their arm. Imagine a world where every person were given the same roadmap in the pursuit of happiness, with the right tools to forge a path of greatness.

In such a world, Will would still be alive.

Walking home on Easter Day 2004, Will Trippley—a full-scholarship athlete, devout son and remarkable friend—was caught amid a violent drug deal in Chester, Pennsylvania, and shot dead.

Full of grief yet determined, his mother, Patricia, launched the Will Trippley Foundation to change the narrative for the next generation in Chester.

At the Will Trippley Youth Development Foundation, our mission is to enrich all childrens’ lives by giving them opportunities to develop their cognitive intelligence, open their hearts, learn new skills, and rediscover hope.

Who We Are The Will Trippley Foundation helps children learn to face challenges, address grief, and unlock their highest potential through engaging, experiential growth opportunities.

The Trippley Foundation has created two unique and successful programs to support children impacted by loss and violence to develop a Growth Mindset: Chester City United, Soccer Program Combining high-level athletic coaching with the Growth Mindset methodology to help kids learn soccer and develop resilience.

Camp Encouragement, Grief Program Empowering youth through a multifaceted counseling program for children who have experienced loss.

In memory of Will Trippley, a compassionate, goofy, dedicated son and friend.

Will Trippley was an extraordinarily bright and talented son, friend and athlete. After earning himself a full soccer scholarship to the prestigious Shipley School and Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania, Will’s life was taken to soon by prevalent gun violence in the Chester community.

Like the kids in our program, Will had so much potential to offer the rest of his community. We continue to cherish Will’s memory by teaching and working with the children whose curiosity and passion reflect Will's spirit, and through whom, his legacy will live on.

Organizational History

Neal's Vision Determined to not let his best friend die in vain, Neal wanted to develop a youth soccer program like the ones Will joined both as a player and a volunteer.

Will Trippley Foundation In 2007, the Will Trippley Youth Foundation formed out of the loss, grief, and passion of Will Trippley's mother, Patricia, and best friend, Neal Regino. It was created to help grant to Chester Comunity, a safe haven where kids could just be kids.

Chester City United In 2009, Chester City United formed through collaboration with the Philadelphia Union, the Boys and Girls Club of Chester, Chester City Department of Recreation, and the Chester Youth Collaborative

Our Future

Camp Encouragement In 2016, Will's death and the years following were understandably extremely distressing to his family. Following a dark time and seeking to provide counseling for other families dealing with loss, Will's mother and our chairperson, Pat, went back to school to get her master's degree and developed the model for Camp Encouragement

Wanting to keep the game going, Coach David came up with an innovative solution to take soccer online. Our Virtual Fútbol Academy combines meeting program "zoom" and the Fifa video game - it allows players to continue to train from home with their team.

Our first virtual Camp Encouragement was a huge success as well! Children were connected with mentors around the world as they engaged in art lessons and creative writing therapy. We're excited to reach even more children around the planet!

David's Commitment From 2019, David Brown, another friend of Will's, took over as president of the Foundation and Director for Chester City United. He has since molded the program into what it is today

Chester City United FESPI Fútbol Chester City United (CCU) program combines high-level soccer coaching with Growth Mindset tools to help kids learn soccer and develop resilience skills to help them in school and life.

The New Normal of Sports: Virtual Fútbol Academy

Program Theory: FESPI Football

In the event of COVID-19, CCU launched the Virtual Fútbol Academy (VFA) to keep our students engaged and peerinvolved during this time of widespread isolation. VFA is an innovative soccer program fusing Zoom video conferencing with the popular FIFA soccer game on the Xbox and PlayStation. The new academy successfully serves our local region and attracts a new international audience such as our players from Hong Kong.

VFA sessions combine tactical soccer lessons such as passing, shooting and dribbling with soft skills like teamwork and sportsmanship. Kids use the Growth Mindset FESPI approach to evaluate their Focus, Effort, Strategies, Perseverance, and Improvement. This framework helps them to meet challenges and learn from them, rather than giving up.

Camp Encouragement Camp Encouragement is a multifaceted counseling program for children who have experienced loss. Students are connected with one another and with mentors to participate in activities that foster their creativity, such as art lessons and creative writing.

Sharing her story Following a dark time and seeking to provide a counseling opportunity for other families dealing with loss, Will Trippley’s mother and our chairperson, Pat, went back to school to get her master’s degree and developed the Camp Encouragement model.Camp Encouragement has evolved significantly since its founding in 2016, from three half-day sessions to five full days, then into the first-ever virtual camp. More than 100 campers have participated in many enriching creative experiences, including yoga, chess, journaling, and horseback riding.

Letter from our President This past year has been incredible; thank you so much to everyone who collaborated with us on every project, every call, every meeting, and every event.

I know now more than ever that I do not have all the skills needed to make this organization successful.

Therefore, I rely heavily on everyone in our ecosystem— the time, energy, and resources of every volunteer, coach, mentor, and friend, have made it so children from all over the planet benefit from our programs. In an article published on us in Thrive Global, they describe our programming as original, Avante-Garde, ingenious, and state-of-the-art. This is important because we enrich the lives of children worldwide by giving them opportunities to develop their cognitive intelligence, open their hearts, learn new skills, and rediscover hope.
