ACCESS Ěƒ AND MOVEMENT There are three main accesses to the site: Frome road, Victoria Road, and North Terrace. However, the lawn is more easily realized and attracted on Frome road as main access on the site.

Car park is available on Victoria Road.

CULTURAL ANALYSIS In summer, the lawn tend to be used frequently as it is shaded by surrounding buildings and trees. So, people will going to choose areas where have cool shade during summer. During summer, this area has variety of festivals.

In winter, the lawns are shaded by surrounding building which lead to this area become colder. So not many people using this area during winter or they will choose on sunny area to take break.

Lawn areas are surrounded by Barr Smith Library at front, Engineering buildings and Bragg buildings on two sides which creates the harmony of nature, classical architecture and modern architecture on the site.

Luminosity is generally understood as a measurement of brightness and the meaning of luminosity depends on what is being measured. For instance, luminosity in architectural fields concentrated on lighting of both exterior and interior. Moreover, luminosity is professionally used as the unit of electromagnetic and the total radiated energy of stars, galaxy in the field of astronomy. The purpose of this essay is to explain deeply the philosophical meanings of luminosity and how it is one of the four most important elements of light in architecture through some specific case studies.

In the aspect of philosophy, according to Ram-Prasad, the awareness of an event as subjective are knowns as luminosity. The luminosity of consciousness is divided into other-illumination (reflexivity) and self-illumination theories. In which reflexivity theories concentrate on the experiences of an event so that it can be perceived as consciousness while self-illumination theories are believed as the essential nature of consciousness that object can present itself differently which is distinctive from other.

Being one of the pioneer of modern architecture, Le Corbusier realized the power of light in linking texture, colour and luminosity of light with his sacred buildings in order to connect to the culture of religion as light is God. For instance, for the main characteristic of the Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut at Ronchamp (1950-1955), Le Cobusier wisely optimized the luminosity of sunlight and the red colour of windows to turn the red-painted void even redder. In culture of Plummer, the reddish morning light is a reasonable similarity to human birth.

Secondly, the masterpiece of linear light of The Monastery of Sainte Marie de la Tourette at Éveux-sur-l’Arbresle (19531960) makes the space become more mystical as the wall absorbing light and emit itself in the dark space. In addition, the special characteristic of this church is the changes of the size of light through the illumination of sunlight over different seasons. In addition, the different distribution of window arrangements and corridors lead to the irregularity of luminosity of light, light and shadow in space that make the space seem to be compressed by light, but expanded in waves.

In contemporary architecture, the interaction between design and luminosity are used more directly and obviously by many famous architects across the world as they make the tight connection between space and luminosity in term of aesthetic of light and brightness. For instance, Zaha Hadid is one of the most famous women architects in the world in not only designing organic architectural forms according to her theories of fragmentation and fluidity but also the way of effectively using medium of light to interact with interior and exterior by placing both natural light and artificial light inside in order to strengthen the unique feature of her designs. To be more specific, the success of her designs derived from early design, Vitra Fire Station with non-parallel, light lines echo the sharp concrete lines to the homogeneity of light in the fluidity of interior space, such as Heydar Aliyev Centre (Baku, 2012) and Nanjing International Youth Cultural Centre (Nanjing, 2016).

In conclusion, luminosity is the word not only described the brightness and used as the unit of astronomy, but also described the presence of objects in philosophy through consciousness (self-illumination) and reflexivity (luminosity). With architecture, light is always the most powerful inspiration to design contemporary buildings.

PRECEDENT

With Louis Kahn’s philosophy, which all materials in nature are made of Light and shadow is a part of light. So, this become the unique stye for his own in designs and inspiration for later modern architects, such as Tadao Ando in Church on the Water, With his philosophy of light, the masterpiece of Louis Kahn’s design was Salk Institute which has become an iconic architecture of Light and Shadow as the way which he applied his knowledge about Greek architecture with the space of light between columns, walls to create the rhythm of light and shadow. The most attractive feature of this design is that Louis Kahn rejected all light and shiny materials like steel and glass to use heavier materials like reinforced concrete and brick to design an open facade. Moreover, the design of symmetrical plan and repetion of monolythic rectilinear form can provoke the images of Classical columns and the light come from some mysterious opening inside of the building has made the space more deeply mysterious.

Inspiring from Salk Institute, although first concept used the opening gap on the ground and second ones used the geometry patterns to bring the light in, both concepts are designed on the basis of the mysteriousness of light and shadow and personal feeling about the light as a guidance in the darkness. The mysteriousness of space is when the light penetrate some parts of the space through the gaps on ground, the light will guide you the way to go which is based on the contrast between shadow and light. In additon, the faint appearance of light in the darkness will create the sense of the infinity of space so that people will be impressed to start a journey through the space.

In term of physics, reflection of light is defined as the images of the return of light, heat when it is not absorbed by the surfaces. In Mathematics, reflections are points which replace points on side of plane or space through the symmetrical points on the other side of plane or space.

In aspect of philosophy, reflection is defined as an active process of adaption and perception of living creatures to the correspondence of mental images with the changes of material world which has been presented during the period of development. Additionally, reflection in philosophy is to postulate the correlation of Essence and Being. For example, our perception about some events is on the basis of the essence of possible events in the past then continue to perceive the event, a judgment. In other word, reflection in philosophy is manifested through the adaptation and solving the problem based on the development of any process in term of contradiction.

In contemporary architecture, reflective façade can contribute to the creation of iconic architecture in numerous urban redevelopment through crystalline images which are used in many different ways. In addition, the use of glass façade is to create the coordination of local society, cultural heritage, city, and environment with buildings. For instance, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg (Architects: Herzog & de Meuron) is the innovative design in contemporary architecture in which the use of outwardly and inwardly curved glass elements have created the distortedly reflective perception of the city, water and sky. With this unique feature of the variety of curved glass panels, the building will reflect with different effects when the environment changes, such as a blue and diffuse sky will be reflected as horizontal lines which are similar to the designs of the automotive industry, and the reflective façade creates bright glossy points and provoke a jewel-like shimmer. In other word, the transparently curved façade expresses a close relationship of the building and water around through reflective images on facades.

In addition, the reflective images is not only created from reflection of glass but also created through the glossiness and brightness of shiny metals. Taking Guggenheim Museum Bilbao which designed by Frank Gehry as an example, the success of this design not only come from the newness in shape and form but also from the innovation in choosing material for the façade. To be more specific, instead of using big panels of glass to create the striking features of the building, Frank Gehry optimized the shiny and glossy properties of titanium to transform his design into an iconic signature which kicked off numerous urban redevelopment by effects of the building. The use of titanium for skins of the building has brought a dynamic composition of forms to Bilbao and dynamic image which the movement of clouds and sunbeam. As a result, the building has become an iconic structure in term of complexity and form.

Besides, the criteria of sustainable architecture has become standard for contemporary architecture in aspect of material choice, structure and the impacts of the building on environment. Therefore, glass and reflective materials is also considered the priority of sustainable construction in some case. For example, SAHMRI, which is designed by Woods Bagot, was an iconic architecture in South Australia because of the aesthetic and function of innovative façade to response the harsh weather in South Australia. The triangulated diagrid façade is designed to improve the quality of natural light in internal space and also improve the heat transfer during summer so that the building can create a healthy internal environment itself. In other word, the use of reflective façade not only design for the aesthetic element of modern architectural movements but also response to the global environmental problems.

In conclusion, the property of reflection of light in architecture and philosophy is similar as reflection in architecture is used to make the correspondence of the building with environment, and reflection in philosophy is the active adaptation to the changes of material world. Moreover, reflection in architecture plays a role as mirror to reflect the innovation of choosing reflective materials in order to cope with the changes of global weather and create the close links of structure of a society, heritage culture with the building
