Summertime Strawberries with Balsamic Strawberry Salad Vinegar Strawberries have many health benefits, they are filled with antioxidants, based on serving size, only blackberries and walnuts score higher in total antioxidant capacity and polyphenols in strawberries help maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Chef Sorita Buitendag from Sinovuyo on Route 304 has treated us to her favourite summer salad recipe. Ingredients 1 Punnet Strawberries 200gr Wild Rocket 1 packet Chevin Goat’s Cheese 50gr Chopped Walnuts 1/2 Cucumber (sliced & halved) Dressing 15ml Balsamic Vinegar 45ml Olive oil 10ml Brown sugar 5ml Wholegrain Mustard Blend all dressing ingredients together (NB add olive oil slowly) In a Salad Bowl layer the salad ingredients, finishing with the Chevin Goat’s Cheese on top. Pour Dressing over.
Total Time: 45 min Prep 15 min Inactive 30 min Yield: 8 servings Level: Easy

So everybody is going on about Low Food Miles. What is the big deal, and why should we be concerned? Food Miles can best be described as the total distance food travels from the grower to your plate, including travel to and from processors and retailers. In days gone by, this never used to be a problem, we as consumers had to make do with whatever the land produced. Eating oranges in the middle of summer? Never! Asparagus in July? Never heard of it! But then if it is available somewhere on the globe, why shouldn’t we indulge? The world is getting smaller after all! Transporting your food long distances involves lorries and aeroplanes. Lorries and aeroplanes use lots of fuel and emit tons of CO2 emissions, contributing to global warming. That’s just the starting point. Other reasons why we should be reducing food miles wherever possible include wanting to eat fresher food, in season; supporting local and regional producers and the economy; and preventing 3rd world countries from cutting down forests and losing their own food, because big companies see food as a commodity, rather as a way to feed the people of that country. That is why we at Meade Café are so passionate about supporting our local farmers, buying what is in season, from farmers we know by name. We believe in local trade, fresh and innovative food choices and putting the best of the Garden Route on your plate. Quick chocolate cupcakes recipe This super speedy cupcake recipe is perfect for when you’re in a hurry. Pop them in the oven and you’ll have a yummy treat that’s ready to ice in just 20 minutes. Serving Size: 18 Ingredients: • 100g butter • 2/3 cup caster sugar • 1 tsp vanilla essence • 2 eggs, lightly beaten • 1 cup self-raising flour • 1/3 cup cocoa, sifted • 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate soda • 125ml (1/2 cup) milk Chocolate buttercream frosting • 60g unsalted butter, softened • 1 1/4 cups icing sugar, sifted • 1 tbsp cocoa, sifted • 1 tbsp milk Method: Preheat oven to 180°C conventional or 160°C fan-forced. Line cupcake tins with cases. Using a mixer, cream butter, sugar and vanilla until creamy and fluffy. Gradually add eggs and mix until just combined. Combine flour, cocoa and bicarbonate soda. Add to creamed mixture with milk. Beat until just combined. Spoon mixture into liners until each case is one third full. Bake for 15-20 minutes. To make the chocolate butter cream Beat butter until light and fluffy. Add icing sugar and cocoa and combine well. Beat in milk until mixture is fluffy. Notes: • These cupcakes are super quick and have a light fluffy texture. • Do not overfill the cases otherwise you won’t get 18 cupcakes out of this recipe. • If you want a thicker dollop of icing on top then you’lll need to increase the buttercream.

Henro het 2 goue medaljes gewen by die SWD kampioenskappe gehou in Maart. Henro is gekies vir die SWD A-span waar hy SWD verteenwoordig het in Suid Afrikaanse kampioenskappe gehou 22 September in Kaapstad. Hy het by die Suid Afrikaanse kampioenskappe 3 eerste plekke behaal, en goue medaljes verower in: o Skopboks ronte geveg o Skopboks punte geveg o Jiu jitsu Hy is tans die 0/7 Suid Afrikaanse kampioen in Skopboks en Jiu Jitsu.
Laerskool Hartenbos se Graad R’s is besoek deur die Mosselbaai Brandweer, waar hulle meer geleer het van veiligheid en die harde werk wat deur die brandweer gedoen word.

SA Gimnastiek Sarah Botha (Gr.4) en Tenushca Bartman het gaan deelneem in die SA Gimnastiek kompetisie te Pretoria (25 – 27 September). Sarah Botha het 3de gekom in die o/10 trampolien en 12de in die dubbel-mini trampolien. Tenushca Bartman het 5de gekom in die o/11 trampolien en 7de in die dubbel-mini trampolien.

Gr. 6 leierskapskamp
Ons Gr.6-leerders het tydens hul leierskapskamp by Wilgewandel waagmoed gewys, geleer om in ‘n span te werk en hul leierskap eienskappe ontwikkel. Die kinders het hul gate uitgeniet en die onderwysers was lekker uitgeput!
Oupa en Ouma dag
Die groep mamma’s het saam met ons Gr.R en RR-onderwysers gesorg vir ‘n onvergeetlike Oupa en Ouma dag op 17 September. Die kinders se hartjie het gebars van trots om met hul ouma’s en oupa’s te spog. Dieter Voight het as gasspreker opgetree.

Spelling bee Jarista Young is vanjaar die wenner in die Graad 7- afdeling van die Spelling Bee Kompetisie in die groter Oudtshoornstreek. Sy is ook vir die tweede opeenvolgende jaar die algehele wenner van die Laerskool afdeling (Gr. 5 tot 7). Benewens die trofeë en medaljes, het sy skryfbehoeftes, woordeboeke en ’n kontanbedrag van R650 as pryse ontvang.

Danskompetisie J. Bezuidenhout en B. Campher het op 27 en 28 September in die Goeie Hoop Sentrum te Kaapstad deelgeneem aan die Nasionale Interprovinsiale Danskampioenskappe, waar hulle ’n vyfde plek verower het.
Nasionale beroepsdag Die graad sewes het op Nasionale Beroepsdag die verskillende beroepe waarin hulle belangstel, met hul kleredrag uitgebeeld. Op die foto verkyn (v.l.n.r.) Entrepreneursdag Die Graad sewes het ’n baie suksesvolle entrepreneursdag aangebied, as deel van hul EBW program. Hulle moes self hul besigheidsplanne opstel en al die berekenings t.o.v. inkomste en uitgawes self doen.
SWD Arende Mnr. Arno Kotze, wat sy internskap aan Laerskool OudtshoornNoord doen, is gekies as stut vir die SWD-arende se o/19 rugbyspan. Sy eerste wedstryd was in die semi-finale teen die valke.
WOW Spelfees
Baie geluk! Oudtshoorn Noord ontvang inkleurboeke (regs) Nedbank het met ‘n borgskap van inkleurboeke gesorg dat gelukkige Graad 1 leerders van Laerskool OudtshoornNoord na hartelus kon inkleur. Diè inkleurboeke vorm deel van Hornbill Productions van George se skoleprojek wat vanjaar bykans die hele Suid-Kaap se skole bedien het. Hier is die Graad 1 leerders saam met v.l.n.r. Mev. P Swiegelaar (opvoeder), Mev. Lorraine Gerber (Nedbank Oudtshoorn), Mnr. Anthony Vann (Nedbank Streeksbestuurder), en Mnr. T. Meyers (Skoolhoof ).
Op Saterdag 21 September het 5 leerders van Laerskool Oudtshoorn-Noord op Stellenbosch aan die Provinsiale WOW-Spelfees gaan deelneem. Hulle het die besoek aa Stellenbosch terdeë en reeds die gevoel van student-wees gekry.

Oranje Rivier Roei
‘n Groep van 39 van ons leerders en onderwysers het gedurende die Oktober vakansie die lang pad aangedurf na Oranje Rivier. Daar het hulle vir drie heerlike, maar koue dae vanaf die plaas, Raap en Skraap tot by Onseepkans op die Oranje Rivier geroei en gereeld oor die “rapids” omgeslaan in hulle bootjies.
Spring Day Van Reede Primary celebrates Spring Day each year. Lots of flowers are brought to school and made up into bunches by Moms. These are delivered to many institutions and businesses all over town. We have a 5km sponsored walk in which everyone participates and then we have great fun playing many different sports and games.

Interprovinsiale Kusstreek Rugbytoernooi Ashwin Botha en Stephan Marais het vanaf 19-21 September aan die Interprovinsiale Kusstreek Rugbytoernooi in Riversdal, op Hoër Landbouskool Oakdale se velde, deelgeneem.
Netbal Laerskool Volschenk het sy man gestaan teen skole veel groter as hulle en bewys dat hulle ‘n krag is om mee rekening te hou. Dit was selfs sigbaar in die groot verteenwoordiging wat ons op provinsiale vlak opgelewer het. Sewe Volschenk dogters het SWDkleure behaal: Iné Lourens (0/12) en Jamie Almal, Anneskia Cloete,Haigha Groenewald, Bernelee Herbert, Leané Pottas en Felecia Pearce (0/13). Jamie, Anneskia, Felecia en Haigha het die verdere onderskeiding behaal dat hulle in die Wes-Kaapspan opgeneem is wat tydens die Junie-vakansie in Margate gaan deelneem het. Rugby 7’s Janco Klinck en JJ vander Vyver het die eerste naweek van die Septembervakansie aan ‘n interprovinsiale 7’s rugbytoernooi in Pretoria deelgeneem.
Eisteddfod Die Volschenkleerder wat die beste in die kunsafdeling van die Ratem Eisteddfod presteer het, is Rhinus Nel in gr. 4. Hy het 96% behaal.

Klavier Radandt Malherbe het uitstekend in die afgelope UNISA-eksamen gevaar. Hy het 86% (Lof ) in Graad 3 klavier behaal.
Onderwysersdag Groot bederf vir die personeel van Laerskool Volschenk op Nasionale Onderwyserdag Watter beter manier van dankie sê vir puik onderrig, agtermekaar administrasie en ’n netjiese skoolterrein is daar, as met ’n heerlike eet-bederf? Op Vrydag, 4 Oktober het die leerlingraad die onderwys , administrasie en terreinpersoneel verras met ’n ontbytpakkie. Die leerlingraad was spoggerig geklee as kelners – strikdas en voorskoot kompleet! Dit was ’n onvergeetlike dag vir almal. Sportafsluiting (links) Met die sportafsluiting is al die sporthoogtepunte in ‘n neutedop saamgevat. Eers is al die sportspanne voorgestel. Daarna is‘n kleurvolle en kreatiewe entrepreneursdag gehou. Die hoogtepunt was‘n netbalwedstryd tussen die 0/13 rugbyseuns en die 0/13 netbaldogters. Die dag is afgesluit met ‘n gesellige potjiekosaand.
Krieket Die JC Slagtery-Ses-aan-‘n-kantkriekettoernooi het op 4 en 5 Oktober op Laerskool Volschenk se velde plaasgevind. Daar was twee afdelings van vier spanne elk. Laerskool Volschenk, Noord- Eind, Paarl Seunsskool en Hermanus was in die een groep. Swartland, Panorama (Kaapstad), Worcester Primêr en Overberg was in die ander groep. Noord-Eind van Paarl het in die finaal teen Overberg van Caledon gespeel. Die toernooi is met slegs een paaltjie deur Overberg gewen. Die toernooi was ’n reuse sukses. Nasionale Onderwystoekenning Me. Dalena van Greunen behaal ‘n 3de plek met die Nasionale Onderwysertoekenning van 2013. Me Van Greunen is ’n Graad 5 onderwyser by Laerskool Blanco en is vir die skool goud werd. Alhoewel sy derde geplaas is, bly sy onbetwis ons wenner. ’n Uitstekende onderwyser, afrigter en mentor vir die kinders by die skool. Sy is ’n voorbeeld vir ander en niks is onmoontlik vir haar nie.
George Vryburgers skenk leesboeke Die George Vryburgers, in samewerking met Shoprite, het drie palette boeke geskenk aan die skool vir eie gebruik en skenkings aan ander skole in die omgewing. Dit het minstens 2 weke geneem om die boeke volgens kategorie uit te sorteer. Ons biblioteekvoorraad het ’n groot hupstoot gekry.
Afrigting van personeel Laerskool Blanco het ’n splinter nuwe tennisbaan bygekry. Om die kinders ’n beter geleentheid te bied is die tennisafrigters deur Wemeyer Ferreira aan die fynere tegnieke blootgestel. Die kinders is baie opgewonde rakende tennis met heelwat wat die oefeninge in die middae bywoon.

Eisteddfod Van Laerskool Blanco se Eisteddfod deelnemers kon gedurende die kutluuraand hul talente te toon stel. Ons is baie gefokus op holistiese opvoeding en dat genot met aktiwiteite beklemtoon word. Te oordeel aan die entoesiasme en uitstekende optredes word daar beslis in hierdie doel geslaag.

The Grade 6+7 classes of Knysna Primary feed 15 children every day for a whole year!

Little Elephants se kleuters neem deel aan die jaarlikse Lente Pretloop.
e’Pap children’s feeding project in Knysna. The Grade 6 classes became aware of the e’pap feeding scheme 4 years ago when their teachers invited the organisers to come and tell them more about e’pap. This was part of their Life Skills programme. The learners enthusiastically started collecting their tuck change and they have subsequently made an annual donation. Many of the grade 7 learners decided to continue with their efforts and organised small fundraising activities. This year they were again treated to an informative talk and had the opportunity to taste the e’pap themselves. (as pictured below). They handed over their contributions viz R1 105 from the Grade 6’s and R600 from the grade 7’s. An amount of R2 135 raised from selling cupcakes as well as money from the MySchool funds further boosted the total to R3 840! This huge amount will feed 15 children – EVERY school day for a WHOLE year! All those 15 children will start their school day with full tummies. This project will remain a definite on the KPS calendar for the grade 6 classes and will hopefully grow from strength to strength.
Rugby U/12 Provincial Stars Knysna Primary School is proud of Reece Pedro, Thando Waxa and Liyema Matyolweni for being part of the SWD U/12 Rugby side that took part in the Annual Coastal Rugby Tournament that was held in Riversdal over the September holidays. The team played matches against Western Province, Eastern Province, Boland and Border.
Well-rooted National Arbour Week was celebrated at Little Elephants Pp School (feeder school to KPS) early in September. The staff of Conrad Pezula donated seven indigenous trees and Cutting Edge Landscapes visted the school early in the morning to dig holes and to donate bone meal. Spring was definitely in the air! We at KPS, salute our boytjies for their hard work and dedication and are looking forward to next season.
Tegnologie in Gr 6 bied baie interessante en lekker uitdagings Gedurende die derde kwartaal moes leerders ‘n eenvoudige elektriese stroombaan ontwerp en bou. Hier is één van die besonderse projekte deur Robyn Garstman gebou – ‘n volledige haarsalon.
