QR (Quick Response) codes are popping up everywhere! Perhaps you’ve seen them in magazines and on billboards. On a web page or even on someone’s t-shirt? Well, it’s official. AWSUM now has them too! Here’s how they work …

quick (hence the Q in QR) and easy way to link the physical world with the virtual world.

WHAT ARE QR CODES? Well, they are similar to normal barcodes you find on everyday products. QR codes are chunks of information encoded in a two-dimensional graphic. Whereas a supermarket barcode consists of vertical lines, a QR code encodes info vertically and horizontally – so you can get more info on it. You scan QR codes with your mobile phone or tablet.

HOW DO YOU READ QR CODES? These are the two essential things you need to read a QR code: • a mobile smart phone or tablet with a camera • a piece of software called a QR reader: this you can download for free from most app stores. • Open the QR reader app on your phone. Point your phone camera at the bar code and snap! ▪ If your phone is scanning the code correctly, you will then see a link and be taken to it immediately Scan the two QR codes at the top of this paper to read AWSUM online or to like us on Facebook. Happy scanning!

WHERE CAN YOU FIND QR CODES? A QR code might contain nutritional information on your breakfast cereal box. Or it can contain travel information at your bus stop, or a link to an online timetable. A code can be included on your business card, e.g. to include a direct link to your online CV, or links to resources such as an online video. You scan it with your mobile phone, and can then access specific information, or online resources, connected to that object. It’s a

LANGUAGE LEADERS!

Bay Language Institute, of 9th Avenue, Summerstrand, will be celebrating eight years of existence this year.

#1: COMMUNICATE! Maintain open, honest and consistent communication. This’ll help you figure out what the problems are and what students think. This way you can address all concerns. #2: INVOLVE YOUR STUDENTS TO SET A GOAL. Involve your students to set clear goals for the remainder of the year. This’ll create a positive atmosphere because they’ll feel like they’re part of the future – and not a dictatorship. #3: CLARIFY EACH STUDENTS’ PURPOSE AND ROLE Make sure each child has a clear understanding of his own role and

purpose. This will give him a sense of direction and meaning, and build a positive attitude. Give them feedback on their influence towards any successes during the year. TIP #4: CELEBRATE SUCCESSES Measure progress and make the effort to celebrate even short-term wins and small successes. Even if it’s just a class picnic. TIP #5: INSPIRE THROUGH POSITIVE LEADERSHIP Be a positive teacher. Ensure you provide inspirational leadership.

The independent, owner-managed language school was established in January 2006 by Shaun Fitzhenry, to tap into the growing Language Travel industry, in which people of all ages spend time in countries learning their chosen language while experiencing the tourist and cultural highlights on offer and practicing their skills in real-life situations. The school initially operated from his home with two expat students linked to VWSA, moved to Central after a year, and just under five years ago moved to Summerstrand, where they consistently host between 15 and 30 students. “Most of our language travellers come here to learn or improve their English for a variety of reasons,” he says, “with some spending their annual holiday combining, for example, English with surfing, diving or golf lessons, while others study English for aviation and some prepare for international benchmark exams such as the Cambridge suite, IELTS or TOEFL, any of which are accepted at all major international universities as proof of their ability to communicate in English.

world and teach English. It’s a great opportunity to learn a skill in demand in most countries, and the BLI TEFL course is gaining recognition as a quality teacher training course. BLI also offers part-time language courses for people working in Port Elizabeth, with regular courses in English, Afrikaans, German, Xhosa, Spanish & Portuguese. The school is a member of the only national organization for language schools, EduSA (Education South Africa) and is a Services SETA accredited training provider. It is currently going through the process of accreditation by the South African Civil Aviation Authority for English language proficiency assessment and training. The EFL teachers the school sends all over the world are ambassadors for this beautiful area and city, and a number of its language learners are here as a result of their influence.

Travellers from all over the world attend the school. “Currently we are teaching people from Angola, Libya, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Brazil, Lesotho and Spain, and have had students from Korea, Colombia, Argentina, the Netherlands, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Syria, DRC, Cameroon, Reunion, France and Ivory Coast! It makes teaching very interesting, and we learn so much from our students – as they do from each other. And, of course, having such a variety of nationalities means that students are forced to use English, maximizing their learning experience and reinforcing the reason why so many people travel to South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the USA, the UK, Ireland, Malta and India to study English.” Bay Language also offers teacher training for the English as Foreign Language industry, running at least five four-week TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) courses every year. Many young and not-so-young South Africans enrol on this course so that they can travel all over the

THE BENEFITS OF INVESTING IN PROPERTY Buying an investment property doesn’t have to be an overwhelming decision because we can assist you every step of the way. Here at RE/MAX, our team is geared to help you with this decision and help ensure you invest in property which will benefit you financially in the long run. Anyone can invest, not just the extremely wealthy. You don’t need large sums of money to be able to get involved with real estate.

Your property could serve as a retirement plan, if it produces a good rental income. The property could also increase in value, which would give you a good return when selling it in the future. The rental income you receive from your property also allows you to borrow and then benefit by helping you pay the interest on your bond.

Investing in real estate is a safe investment because you are in full control of your property assets, meaning you are essentially the CEO of your investments, where other investments may be at the mercy of external forces. The younger you start to invest in property, the better. There are tons of ways in which you can add value to your property, which then increases the value and your returns on the investment.

The majority of us will not gain wealth overnight, it takes long term investing and a diverse portfolio to create wealth, but property investment is an essential part of this portfolio. Contact RE/MAX today and let an experienced professional help guide you through the process of investing in property to become a millionaire. Don’t wait any longer, make that call today.

A TART WITH A DIFFERENCE!

Compiled by Jenny Morris

Beetroot tart with baby rocket (serves 4)

This is such a simple tart, yet it always gets a “wow” from my guests because it looks so beautiful on a plate. If beetroot is not your favourite, use grilled tomatoes and basil. WHAT YOU’LL NEED: 1 sheet ready-made puff pastry, 1 egg, beaten Topping 1 cup cream cheese ½ cup heavy cream juice of one lemon 4 large cooked beetroots, thinly sliced and patted dry Salad ¼ cup olive oil ½ tablespoon lemon juice salt and pepper 2 cups baby rocket ¼ cup Parmesan shavings WHAT TO DO: Preheat the oven to 200◦C. Lightly dust a work surface with flour and then roll out the puff pastry until it is 4mm thick. Cut out four discs with an 11.5cm round pastry cutter. Using a sharp knife, lightly score around the pastry discs 1cm from the edge, taking care not to cut through the pastry. Brush the edges with the beaten egg and place the pastry discs on to a non-stick baking sheet. Poke a few holes in the pastry and place in the oven on the middle shelf.

Bake for 20 minutes or until golden. Once cooked, remove from the oven and leave to cool.

WIN!

© Eats Mary Rolph Lamontagne Published by STRUIK LIFESTYLE

Topping Blend the cream cheese, cream and lemon juice together. Spread over the base of the cooled tart shells. Arrange the beetroot slices on top of the cheese mixture. Be sure that the beetroot slices are relatively dry so the pink juice does not run on to the white cream.

Two lucky readers could win a cafféluxe machine and capsule combo set to the value of R1650.00 each!

Salad Whisk the olive oil and lemon juice together in a small bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Pour this vinaigrette over the baby rocket and toss. To serve, place individual tarts on plates and top with rocket and Parmesan shavings.

If you suspect that your child is being bullied it may leave you feeling angry, powerless, hurt or frustrated on their behalf. Here are some tips on what you can do to assist and support your child if he or she is being bullied at school: 1. Encourage your child to talk about their day and any significant events that may have taken place. 2. Take bullying seriously. Children often don’t report incidents of bullying as they feel ashamed, embarrassed or hopeless about what is taking place. 3. Empathize with your child. Tell him or her that bullying is wrong, that it is not his or her fault, and that you are glad that he or she has had the courage to tell you about it. 4. Help your child to be specific when describing bullying incidents: Who? What? Where? When? Keep a record of incidents and look for patterns or evidence of repeated bullying behaviour. 5. Ask your child how he or she has tried to stop the bullying and how they would like you to help. 6. Check your own emotions. A parent’s protective instincts stir strong emotions. Although it is difficult, step back and consider the next steps and the impact that they may have on your child carefully. 7. Treat the school as an ally. Share your concerns and specific information about bullying incidents with appropriate school personnel. 8. Teach your child non-violent ways to deal with bullies such as walking away, playing with friends, or talking it out. 9. Give your child positive feedback when they behave well in order to help build their selfesteem. 1. Tell your child to ignore the bullying. 2. Blame your child for the bullying or assume that your child did something to provoke the incident. 3. Confront the bully or members of the bully’s family as this will increase the likelihood of retaliation. 4. Encourage physical retaliation. 5. Criticise the way in which your child may have handled the bullying situation. It is often very difficult for children to know how best to respond. 6. Bully your children or bully others in front of them. Many children who are bullied at home react by bullying other children. If your child witnesses you hit, ridicule, or gossip about someone else, they are likely to model this behaviour with others. Christine Darney Clinical Psychologist

Straws and wrinkles, bet you didn’t think you would ever hear those two words in one sentence. Did you know that just by putting your lips around a straw, you can kick start the anti-ageing process? Here are more daily habits that can affect your skin.... PUT DOWN THE STRAW AND PICK UP THE GLASS What was once a myth, has been proved true, ‘wrinkles are caused by any excessive muscle movement,’ says dermatologist Dr Debra Jaliman. She believes the best time to combat these signs is when you’re younger, and advises using a bit of retinol around the forehead and mouth at night to solve this problem. We like retinol-rich Yves Rocher Wrinkles & Firmness Force Day Cream. BREAK THAT BAD HABIT, YES YOU KNOW THE ONE Whether you’re a 20-a-dayer or a sneaky social puffer, smoking restricts blood flow and is another major cause of ageing, particular around your mouth. It’s a bad habit that you need to break, unless you’re happy with a dull, wrinkled complexion. Ok, we know it’s not something that can happen overnight so look at applying a brightening moisturiser daily. We love Pond’s Gold Radiance Youthful Glow Day Cream SPF15.

skin – something we all want. So depending on your skin concern, make sure the right ingredients are listed on the back of your products. This also means that they need to be listed early on, as the further down the list they are, the smaller the amount. If dark spots are a problem, look for vitamin C, soy and arbutin. Fine lines a concern? Look for hyaluronic acid, vitamin A and retinol. Want to combat shine? Look for charcoal, kaolin and silicone. And no matter what your skin type or complexion, always apply sunscreen too!

STOP DISMISSING ACNE AS A HORMONAL BREAKOUT Too often we hear this, and there is much faster and more effective way to handle acne than by trying every spot-busting product line other there. Book an appointment with a dermatologist. Professional advice can mean less long term effects on your skin, like scarring and we believe firmly believe prevention is better than cure. To find a reputable dermatologist in your area go to: http:// www.derma.co.za/C_FindaDerm.aspx TURN DOWN THE HEAT Turning the hot tap on full blast can actually dry out your skin and hair, rather go for a moderate temperature to keep moisture locked in. Then, while you’re still damp apply a rich moisturiser like Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Body Gloss which contains cocoa butter and vitamin E, plus it gives skin a gorgeous glow. Plus, as you age, your hair also becomes more brittle and less resilient so try and avoid washing your hair daily to help preserve the flow of natural oils from your scalp to your locks. STAY ACTIVE This helps in many ways. Exercise helps to increase your blood supply which means healthier looking skin and more days of looking fabulous! SLOW DOWN AGEING WITH ANTIOXIDANTS Having a nutritious and healthy diet is the key! Makeup is amazing for a lot of things but can only cover imperfections on the surface; these are where antioxidants come in. Great skin comes from within. Some examples of foods you could try while you’re young, munching on some berries and dark chocolate to keep your body healthy from within and glowing on the outside. EMBRACE YOUR INNER SCIENTIST Having a set skincare routine can result in healthier, more glowing

It can be quite a shock when your child starts to swear. You might be wondering where your child learned that kind of language, and whether she really understands what she’s saying. How you react to your school-age child’s swearing now will influence her future swearing behaviour. Why do school-age children swear? Young children often swear because they’re exploring language. They might be testing a new word, perhaps to understand its meaning. When school-age children swear, it’s usually to vent some negative feelings. It’s a response to something painful, upsetting or frustrating. Children might also swear to fit in socially. They might be trying to be part of the group, or to stand out by being funny or adding shock value to their talk. Children might also be imitating others when they swear. What to do: immediate action Speak to your child about his choice of words, rather than ignoring his behaviour . Your child might or might not fully understand a swear word’s meaning. But school-age children do understand that words can hurt or offend others. Your reaction will influence

whether your child swears again. Stay calm and explain clearly that the word your child used is not acceptable. This will go a long way towards preventing future swearing. Should I explain what the word means?
School-age children can benefit from a simple explanation, depending on the individual child. If you think your child might have some understanding of the meaning of the word, you can ask her what she thinks the word means. Then use general terms to explain why it’s not appropriate. For example, you could say, ‘That is a word for private body parts. We don’t use it like that in our family’.

speak at all’, or ‘There are some words we don’t use in our home’. • Be aware of what your child watches, listens to and plays with. That means supervising TV, movies and other multimedia and music. It’s a good idea to have the computer and TV in a part of the house where you can easily see them. • Praise your child when you notice him dealing more appropriately with anger or frustration. • Your child will hear words out in public that you have said are unacceptable. It’s good to be prepared for this situation. If your child asks you why somebody is using a bad word, you could talk about how people in different families have different rules.

What to do: the longer term • Discuss your family rules about acceptable language with your child. For example, you could say, ‘Please speak politely or don’t

When your child pushes the boundaries Some children will keep pushing the boundaries after being told not to. If you find yourself in this situation, try the

following strategies: • If your child’s swearing is abusive and directed at others, clearly state that you will not tolerate this kind of behavior • If swearing is one of several inappropriate behaviours that your child shows, you might consider seeking help from a child health professional such as a psychologist or school counsellor. Where did my child hear that word? Children pick up swear words from many sources, outside and inside the home. Almost half of parents in a recent survey reported that they believe that their children learned to swear from the parents themselves. This isn’t too surprising – more than 40% of the parents surveyed said they swear every day. Even 19% of parents who said they don’t swear themselves believe that their children learned

to swear from parents. This suggests there are quite a few Australian families where one parent has more colourful language than the other. But not all children learn from their parents. Research suggests that exposure to swear words on TV can lead to an increase in swearing in children. Friends and peers will also influence your child. Children will pick up new words as their social circle expands to include playmates, school friends and older children. Other facts about swearing Studies on brain damage affecting the language areas of the brain have found that some people who have lost the ability to speak, or struggle to form words, can still swear easily. This is thought to be because swearing is processed in a different area of the brain.

Matriekafskeid 2014 “Destination Greatness”

Syce het die volgende gesê: “You were born with potential, you were born with goodness and trust, you were born with ideas and dreams and you were born with wings. You are not meant for crawling, so don’t. You have wings. Learn to use them and fly”. – Rumi. Die leerders was verstom toe hulle die pragtige uitnodigings sien vir hulle matriekafskeid en sien vreeslik uit na hierdie spesiale aand wat die 14de Augustus by Running Waters plaasvind.

Sokker

Hy was nog vanjaar ‘n Cillié leerders in Gr11A.

Theodore Herzl School Tomorrow’s leaders, leading today Theodor Herzl High School has a proud history of involvement in Port Elizabeth’s Junior City Council (JCC) and we are always thrilled by the work done by our councillor pupils. Matrics CAYLA-ROSE JACK and MARCUS MIENIE have held senior offices as head of the JCC Fundraising Committee and councillor on the Communications Committee respectively this year. Most recently, JESSICA MANDEL, in Grade 11, was elected Junior Mayor and will take up

this most significant role in August. Jess said she has always felt privileged to attend Theodor Herzl and aware of the gap in South African education. “I see the JCC as a platform through which I can make a positive difference to the lives of children less fortunate than me. We can be the change we want to see in our country.” Congratulations, Jess, and our best wishes for a highly successful tenure!

“Got the headphones on, rocking the studio...” SIVUYILE TSHEFU, Gr 11, was one of 14 high scholars who took over AlgoaFM on 16 June “in the name of all youth in South Africa”. Sivu had enjoyed a work shadow day at the studio and she so impressed the DJs that they invited her to come back as a newsreader on the spirited ‘takeover’ team. “Not many people can say that they’ve spoken to over 626 000 people about something as informative as news while still managing to hold their audience’s attention!” Sivu said. “It was not only a learning experience, but also one of the most fun coup d’état ever undertaken in Port Elizabeth. I couldn’t be more honoured to have taken part in it.”

Email - awsum@tiemedia.co.za or phone - 021 872 3880 Pearson vs Graeme College RUGBY Pearson hosted Graeme College in their annual rugby fixture on Saturday. Pearson utilized the wind well in the first half pinning Graeme College down in their own twenty two of the field. Pearson had numerous scoring opportunities but failed to penetrate the strong Graeme defence. At the break, there was no score on the board which set up a thrilling second half. Graeme caught the Pearson team napping early in the second half, opening the scoring from a quick line out. The conversion was unsuccessful and the Pearson

SOCCER In the first week of the holidays, the u/19 Soccer squad competed in a schools tournament organised by SA Sports Tours in East London. The tournament was spread over 3 days and the Pearson boys played some excellent football. The results are as follows: Our first game was against Thomas More College from Durban. It was a game which was dominated by Pearson but we didn’t take proper advantage of our opportunities and disappointingly drew 2-2. The second match was against Kimberly Boys High. This was a great match and it showed the boys’ character because they had to equalise twice to stay in the match and ultimately scored a winning goal to win 3-2. The 3rd match was against Bergvliet High School from Cape Town. Pearson were in total control for most of this game and ended up winning 4-1. Well done to Dillon Middleton, who scored all 4 goals in this game! The 4th game was the only game that Pearson lost in the tournament, a disappointing 3-0 loss to George Sports Academy. The last game

1st Team Girls Hockey Report The Pearson 1st Girls Hockey, the only team from the Eastern Cape team, travelled to Cape Town to take part in a prestigious and well organized “Cape Town International Hockey Tournament” from 22-28 July. 22 Teams from across the globe took part in the tournament. The Pearson team was up to every challenge that came their way, by giving a very good display of hockey. At the end of the round robin matches, Pearson was placed 1st in their pool, ensuring them of a quarter final match against Bloemhof. The girls once again did not disappoint, winning the match 2-0 for a place in the semis against Millfield from England. The Pearson girls lost the match 1-2 against a very strong team, but won the 3rd/4th place match against Springfield 1-0 to earn them a well-deserved bronze medal.

team had it all to do playing into a strong wind. Pearson answered quickly thereafter with number eight, Themba Boltina, running a beautiful line off scrum half Nathan Augustus to score under the posts. Duwayne Baartman was successful with the conversion to give the hosts a two point lead with 20 minutes to play. In a very tight game where neither team gave an inch, Pearson hung on to their lead to give them a 3rd consecutive victory over Graeme College, beating them 7-5. was against Strelizia from Uitenhage. Dillon Middleton and Hewan Palmer scored absolutely brilliant goals in this game but Strelizia are a very strong side and they fought hard to earn a 2-2 draw. Disappointingly, we lost out on a semi – final place purely because of goal difference but it was encouraging to hear from a lot of the other schools there that we deserved to be in the semi’s. We ended up in 5th position out of 11 schools. Dillon Middleton was awarded Top Goal scorer of the tournament as well as Player of the Tournament, a fantastic achievement.

“Reach for a slipper day”

DF Malherbe 1st team boys play against English School An English team of England, The John Hampden Grammar School of Boys came to visit Port Elizabeth as part of their tour to South Africa. Riegardt Pienaar, DF Malherbe’s high school’s captain, said that they really enjoyed the match. “John Hampden play really good hockey together as a team, and

it is their great passing that made them win the match.” For a school like DF it was a huge opportunity to learn about a different culture of players with a different background than us normal South African learners. The learners are really thankfull for this and they look forward in playing against a team like this before.

DF Malherbe supported the Reach for a Dream foundation’s “Reach for your Slippers Day” on Friday, 1 August. Staff and pupils joined in and paid R10 each to wear their slippers to school. DF Malherbe het die Reach for a Dream stigting se “Reach for your Slippers Day” Vrydag, 1 Augustus ondersteun. Personeel en leerders het elkeen R10 betaal om hulle pantoffels vir die dag in die skool te dra.

Leerders presteer puik by gholftoernooi “Twee van DF Malherbe se leerlinge het puik presteer by onlangse OP Junior Golf toernooi. Die toernooi word elke jaar deur Nomads geborg en die wenner kry ‘n gesogde Nomads baadjie. Dit het plaasgevind op 11 Julie in koue weersomstandighede by Humewood Golf Klub.
