It marks the first World Cup to take place in an Arab nation and only the second to be held in Asia after World Cup 2002, which was hosted in Japan and South Korea. This will also be the first time that the event will take place this late during the year, due to the extreme summer climate in Qatar.
The 2022 edition of the competition would be the first-ever winter World Cup, if considered from the northern hemisphere. The World Cup usually takes place in mid-year but when it came to Qatar, an exception just had to be thrown.
As per an estimate, Qatar is spending a whopping $200 billion on infrastructure projects. That’s nearly 10x more than the next most expensive World Cups, Brazil (£11.6 billion) and Russia (£14.2 billion). This is partly because Qatar is building seven brand new stadiums from scratch. It’s also nearly 64x the $3.5 billion South Africa invested in its World Cup. This will make the upcoming event one of the most expensive World Cups in the history of the game.
Only eight stadiums have been lined up by Qatar to host the World Cup which is the lowest number of venues for the World Cup in recent years. In fact, out of all the eight venues selected to host the tournament, only one got revamped completely while seven are being newly constructed in the country.
As per an estimate, the Qatar FIFA 2022 World Cup may well end up receiving a record number of visitors by the time the tournament comes to an end. The country expects to welcome the largest influx of over 1 million international spectators.
It’s estimated that 1,300 incoming flights will land in the country daily throughout the competition. The reason behind this is easy to grasp. Being one of the finest countries in the Middle East, Qatar’s convenient geographic location makes it lie in close proximity to most nations.
Qatar is a small country. It is, in fact, way smaller than the host of the World Cup 2018, Russia. Since the size of the country is so small, commuting from one place to another here is not a big hassle. Host cities like Doha, Lusail, Al Wakrah, and Al Rayyan are located in close proximity to each other. Hence, moving from one venue to the other wouldn’t be a big hassle for travelers. Another interesting fact is the two most remote stadiums of Qatar -- Al Bayt and Al Wakrah -- are only 90 miles apart.
One of the most important points to note about the host nation for FIFA 2022 is the fact that Qatar receives distressingly high temperatures during day times. To tackle the issue, Qatar came up with an audacious solution. For the first time ever, a country is set to host the FIFA World Cup in fully air-conditioned stadiums. All eight venues in Qatar will be fully air-conditioned, providing a comfortable viewing experience to
fans while making the conditions good enough for players to perform on the pitch. That translates to roughly 43,560 household air conditioners per stadium or a whole lot of industrial fans.
Not only will Qatar be the first-ever Middle Eastern nation to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022, but it will also be only the second time when the prestigious competition takes centre stage in Asia. The first time it happened was in 2002 when Japan and South Korea co-hosted the FIFA event for the first time in Asia.

BTS’ Jungkook will perform at the 2022 FIFA World Cup’s opening ceremony in Qatar and appear on the tournament’s official soundtrack.
The opening ceremonies will happen on Sunday, Nov. 20, at Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar.
FIFA announced the official soundtrack for the World Cup earlier this year.
It includes three massive tracks — “Hayya Hayya (Better Together),” “Arhbo” and “Light the Sky” — that will dominate the airwaves during the world’s biggest soccer tournament.

The Matric Valediction ceremony was held on Tuesday, 25 October to celebrate the culmination of 12 years of school and to recognise the contribution and achievements of the Matric Class of 2022 at Rand Park High School. It was wonderful to host the Matrics and their parents once again, after having had to restrict the numbers of people invited to the previous two Valedictions because of COVID-19. The evening was full of reminiscing, lots of laughter and some tears.

Congratulations to Caitlyn Freeman for making the U13 B CGL woman’s cricket team. We are tremendously proud of her and her achievement. Well done young lady and may you keep Trinityhouse’s flag flying high.
As we draw the 2022 year to a close, Sohail Seonath Grade 7 Commonwealth A cricketer has had an amazing year with the bat. He has also scored a triple century and a double century this year. Sohail has scored in excess of 2100 runs for the Commonwealth A team in 2022, and in excess of 4150 runs in all cricket this year.

The Commonwealth A cricket team, led by Mr Liebenberg and captained by Sohail, has also had a phenomenal year. The team won the Fairlands U13 and Afrikaans Schools U13 leagues in 2022. All the boys played exceptionally well and it was a true team effort. Sohail was instrumental in these wins and leading from the front, scoring 48 not out and 87 in both the finals respectively.
We are very proud to announce that Emma Gordon in Grade 10 has been selected as a member of the U17 Gauteng Softball Team that will play in the 2022 Summer Games in December. She is an integral part of the First Team at school, playing 3rd base and relief pitcher. She also hit at least 1 home run in every league match for the school this season. Congratulations on your fantastic achievement, Emma! Best of luck for the tournament.

This year, Brescia House School once again ran a combined Earth-keeper/Eco-committee and Serviam project on St Francis day (4th October).
The event, called Project Dogbowl, aimed at generating awareness for the SANParks K9 unit. During break, the entire school body gathered on the lawns and filled in the shape of a massive pawprint. The Primary School also attended a special assembly during which time Honorary Rangers from SANParks came to address the pupils. Pupils, parents and staff were also encouraged to assist by making donations to this very worthy cause.
Poaching in our national parks remains a major conservation challenge in South Africa. The SANParks K9 Anti-Poaching Unit is considered a game changer for anti-poaching initiatives in the Kruger National Park. Well-trained dogs such as the Bloodhound, Belgian Shepherd, or Malinois, breeds are perfectly suited to track poachers in the field and detect firearms, ammunition and wildlife products that enter and exit through park gates. These remarkable dogs can follow an hours-old scent over impressive distances.
A well-trained dog and its handler are powerful weapons against wildlife crime. Dogs use their
superior senses of smell, hearing, eyesight and agility to sense and do things that people can’t.
As poachers become more lethally armed, dogs provide vital early warning and safety systems for rangers and handlers. Their keen sense of smell and ability to track over long distances for up to 48 hours make them invaluable additions to antipoaching programs. Tracker dogs are deployed by helicopter or vehicle and operate throughout the Park. Since its inception in 2012, the K9 antipoaching Unit in the Kruger National Park has grown from 3 to 55 dogs. Because of its success, the project has been extended to other National Parks, with a total of 75 dogs now working across the country.
1. Tell us more about yourself and your leadership. Hi! My name is Christabel. My favourite colours are royal blue and purple and my favourite type of animal is currently an arctic foxthey’re absolutely adorable!
I often indulge in the world of rom coms and thriller novels and as a result, have perhaps unreasonably high standards for men. I absolutely adore K-dramas and have watched countless, enjoying every single one I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing. My passion is acting. I enjoy singing as well as writing short stories. I do also have an interest in the world of law and aim to study it after high school. The idea of being able to defend myself as well as others who may not be in the position to do so themselves and to truly know my rights sounds extremely appealing to me.
I’m very strong in faith and value my relationship with God above all else. Without Him, His grace and wisdom, many of the things I have accomplished today wouldn’t have been possible. Through His guidance and the talents He’s given me, I can boldly say that I am the person that I am today and I make sure to show off my love for Him every opportunity I have.
As a leader, I think the last thing I need to do is control everything
and ‘lead’ those I’m given responsibility over into becoming the best versions of themselves and able to manage assigned tasks without requiring someone to micro-manage them. However, I don’t believe myself to be laissez-faire as I do think it’s important to take charge when necessary and perhaps to start the working process up. More than control, I value teamwork, empathy and a true, deep understanding of every person I’m given the opportunity to work with. So, perhaps the best style of leadership that would suit me is transformational leadership.
Although I may not always know exactly what to do at every given moment, I do pride myself on my ability to think fast and rally people together to think of possible solutions. When a team I’ve led reaches success, I’m filled with pride, not just for myself, but for every member who partook and put in the effort to make the goal achievable
2. What are your goals for your school for your term of service? I strive to be a good example for all those who look up to me and a trustworthy leader my fellow learners know that they can rely on to make sure their voice is heard in the school. I’ve already begun to brainstorm ideas on what can improve the Curro Aurora experience for the learners and I’ve heard brilliant ideas from other learners on how they believe our already lovely school could be taken to the next level. I believe it to be my responsibility to ensure that every idea and hope the learners have is heard and as many as realistically possible are actualised for them. After my term is completed, I want my fellow learners to be able to look at the school and truly in their heart of hearts see it as a home where they can freely express themselves and actually look forward to coming to school every day because they know that what awaits them is a loving, caring environment. As head girl, I’ve made it my duty to ensure I am the voice for those unheard, a leader, a sister and a friend to every learner. I want to make the Curro Aurora experience the best for every learner so that one day, when they are successful and look back on their high school days, the smiles and happy memories they made here fill them with gratitude and joy.
1. Tell us more about yourself and your leadership. My name is Marubini Mulaudzi and I am the head boy of Curro Aurora for 2023. I excel in Dramatic Arts. I am an actor and I am also able to design, dance, etc. However, I also play rugby and I am big on the execution of the schools’ spirit or rather the blue pride that is within us as Curro Aurora learners, however, my leadership is executed best on what I think would benefit others in the best way possible.
2. What are your personal goals for the next year?
My personal goal for next year is to genuinely work on myself internally and externally. Internally, in the sense of what is best and most suitable for my sanity and religious beliefs, and externally, in achieving everything that I have planned for and things that will benefit me in the future.
3. What are your goals for your school for your term of service? To better the culture of the school and make it an enjoyable place of excitement for every learner, teacher and our other lovely people that help us at school such as the cleaners and gardeners. I want to bring activities such as mass bunks, South African war cries and even create a platform where learners can come support their fellow schoolmates at sports or cultural events. I want every parent, teacher, etc. to be able to have pride when saying our school’s name, Curro Aurora.
