Droom jy oor liefde?

Elke dogter droom oor jou groot troudag of jy in graad 3 is en of jy in matriek is. Dalk is of was jy reeds getroud.

P 2

Slow on Saturdays

P3

When is enough TV enough

P3

Die gevoel is goed vir jou

P5

Ons deel ‘n liefdes omelet in die

AWSUM kombuis

Can ART improve scholastic academic achievement? It is a well-known fact that different parts of the brain are involved in the process of learning. The most known being the left en right hemisphere. As each hemisphere has its own unique characteristics of thinking and processing, it has unique needs in relation to receiving information in the right context and format. For the longest time the education system has been designed and delivered perfectly in context for left hemispherical thinking, using words, words, word – text, text and more text. Very few visual images and visual methods including form, shapes and colour has been part of the learning environment. Yet, it is estimated that over 75% of both children and adults use the right hemisphere and spatial-visual images to learn and make long-term memory connections. Considering learning outside of the formal education context, much information is presented in a spatialvisual manner, through technology, television and computers.

In the past it could be argued that only the right brain dominant spatial-visual learners would have the need for a more visual learning approach; as seeing and visualising is critical for the right brain learner.

out the ability to see, create and decipher visual images, learning will not be possible. It seems that all in all art plays a much more important role in learning than imagined.

However, in today’s day and age, with technology playing an increasing role in education, left brain learners might have to learn the ability to use image, colour and shape in the learning process. As words form the vocabulary needed for learning in the formal educational system, pictures and images forms the vocabulary for learning for the spatialvisual learners. Art and reading are both visual skills. Reading is about deciphering visual symbols. Art is about developing visual skills and learning to see and create symbols. Through the process of art the volume of visual vocabulary is greatly increased and more ways of communication and thought established.

When is enough TV enough?

screen time means less physical activity and face-to-face interaction with friends and family, these are both key towards creating a stress-free childhood.” Negative effects Children who watch more than the recommended two hours of television per day can suffer from obesity, irregular sleep, impaired academic performance and behavioural problems such as aggression. Excessive exposure to video games is linked with attention problems. “While it might be nice to get your kids out of your hair for a while, find healthier activities for them – the TV should be a

treat, not the accepted norm,” advises Swart. Limit Impose rules about the amount of time a week your children are allowed to spend on electronic devices such as iPads, tablets, smartphones and gaming equipment – “perhaps take the devices away if they do not appear to be respecting the rules,” says Dave. With regards to TV time, it is a good idea to limit this to weekends only; “As discipline and routine goes out the window, create a viewing timetable during the school holidays - this way everyone gets to watch a couple of hours of their favourite programme a week and it’s within limits.” Monitor Make sure to research the TV shows, movies and video games your child watches and plays. “If it appears too violent, includes excessive swearing, sexual content or explicit references, explain why it is not appropriate for them to view it,” says Swart. “Age restrictions are there for a reason.” Tips: • Never place a TV or computer in your child’s room – this can result in irregular sleeping patterns and poor academic performance; • Discourage the association of food with TV time;

• Ban excessive screen time; • Encourage healthy activities such as dancing, football, puzzles and group activities to help build social skills; • Set a good example – when you are home limit how much TV you watch, don’t stay glued to your phone or spend too long online; • Preview programmes and read the reviews, paying special attention to the age rating. Although television, interactive video games and the Internet can be excellent sources of education and entertainment for children, too much screen time can lead to bad health and behaviourial problems. In fact research by Public Health England has found that children who spend more than four hours a day in front of the television and computer screen have lower self-esteem and greater emotional problems. “To ensure your child stays healthy and happy, take the time to understand the risks associated with watching too much TV and monitor how long they spend watching shows and playing video games this holiday,” school counsellor and teacher at Cape Town based Riverside College, Dave Swart says. “Too much

FEBRUARY 2014 5 After thorough investigation by the AWSUM team in Nulaid egg grading plants in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Johannesburg we are excited to share one particular chicken interview with all our readers. The outcome was interesting‌ Q: AWSUM Investigator: Where do you come from and where do you lay the eggs? Chicken: We all came through the integrated Nulaid production process with our own breeding farms, hatcheries, rearing farms. At age 18 weeks, when we are strong and healthy, we go to all the Nulaid layer farms to start laying eggs, where after Nulaid grades these eggs and supply our customers with quality commercial eggs and pasteurized liquid egg products. Q: AWSUM Investigator: After your eggs are packaged, what happens then? We deliver in all pack sizes as per our customer needs and we supply all market segments in all the provinces. Our product range consists of all grades of eggs from medium to jumbo and we grade eggs into the following pack sizes: 2x6, 18 eggs, 24 eggs, 30 eggs, 48 eggs and 60 eggs. Q: AWSUM Investigator: How are they delivering the eggs? We wish deliveries could be as easy as in that Leon Schuster movie where chickens ask to be put in the Durban box, but deliveries are done by our own delivery fleet as well as outsourced fleets in certain provinces. We proud ourselves that we deliver within 48 hours to all customers and that our products are always of the best quality and freshness. After all, they choose the best chickens to lay them. Q: AWSUM Investigator: Do you think your eggs are the best? After we have laid our eggs, they take the eggs to pack stations where they are audited once a year by SAFSIS. We make sure that we comply with the criteria of these audits to lay the best eggs as possible. Passing these audits means that our customers are assured of the best products, produced in the correct manner. No one really knows what was first, the chicken or the egg, but one thing is certain, the AWSUM team is proud consumers of Nulaid eggs. To find out more about Nulaid you can visit our website at www.nulaid.co.za or contact our call centre at 0861 NULAID.

Wys jou liefde met `n

OMELET

Februarie is die maand wat ons liefde vier, maar nie net liefde vir jou vrou, man, meisie of kĂŞrel nie, liefde vir mekaar. En wat is beter as om liefde te toon as om jou ma, pa, boetie of sussie in die bed met `n lekker ontbyt wakker te maak.

`n Liefdes omelet

Bloemhof gaan KKNK toe

Rhenishers Out in the World HOCKEY

At the Pro Series Indoor Nationals 2013 Hockey Tournament during December 2013, the Boland teams, which included a number of Rhenish players, performed extremely well.

KARATE

Anke Smit (Grade 11) was chosen to represent Western Cape Karate and travelled to Bloemfontein to represent her province at the Karate South Africa trials from 31 January – 2 February 2014. Anke came 1st in her division in kumite and is thus the Junior Female (over 59kg) Champion 2014. She will represent South Africa in the African and International tournaments.

Back: Bailey Kelly (Rhenish), Meghan Johnstone, Moya Smith (Rhenish), Brent Samuels (Coach), Helen Halvorsen, Nidia Vermeulen. Front: Elenore Pretorius, Monique Bartsch (Rhenish), Rebecca Kaps, Caitlin Odendaal.

The Boland Foxes Girls’ U14 (with Monique Bartsch, Bailey Kelly and Moya Smith – Natasha Marnewick could unfortunately not participate as she was injured) won Gold in the A Section. Monique was awarded Player of the Tournament in the U14 age category. The Boland Scorpions Girls’ (with Megan McEwan and Anje Albertyn) won Gold in the B Section. In the U16 category, Boland Foxes Girls’ U16 (with Ash Rutherford) achieved Silver in the A Section, and the Boland Scorpions Girls

(with Louise Currie) won Gold in the B Section. This tournament included 124 teams and more than 1200 players from across South Africa. It has grown tremendously and is extremely competitive. PSI has been given the thumbs up from SA Hockey President, Dave Carr, a clear indication that this code of sport is being acknowledged within SA Hockey as a great contributor to the strength of field hockey.

SWIMMING

Mikayla Eagles (Grade 8) will be attending the South African Open Water Championships in February. Mikayla will travel to Durban for the championships and will take part in the 3km event, an event she won last year.

MUSIC

Annige Kreft (Grade 11) is currently to be seen performing at the Artscape Arena in “A Streetcar Named Desire”. Annige forms part of a three-piece band (she plays the cello) which “… evoke(s) an atmosphere of sweat, smoke and jazz so distinct of the era and genre.” (Steyn du Toit, Cape Times, 14 January 2014)

WATER POLO THE RHENISH CHOIR

under the leadership of Mrs Sonja van Amstel – has continued to show growth, skills development and performance excellence. Following a successful 2013 (cultural tour to the Czech Republic, participation in Woordfees, and “Best Choir” with 90% at MADD) the choir has now been reformed into a Junior and a Senior choir. Each choir comprises some seventy members.

The choirs will perform at the annual Rhenish Concert in the Garden (16 March), the Prestige Concert at the Endler Hall (7 May), in the Eistedfodd and in a musical Revue which the Music Department will put on in the middle of August. Preparation is intense and the Senior choir spent the first weekend in February on a camp in Grabouw, putting in some gruelling hours familiarising themselves with the repertoire.

A number of our girls also participated in the South African School Water Polo Tournament in East London in December: Ash Rutherford represented Western Province U16A and the team placed 1st in the tournament. This is Ash’s third tournament and she has been part of the winning team for three consecutive years. Boland U14A (Michaela van Schaik, Carly du Plessis, Camirin Smith and Baily Kelly played in this team) placed 12th. Boland U15A featured Josephine Knappe, Rosanne Strauss, Anin Olivier and Megan Leslie and they placed 6th. Boland U16A (Caitlyn Roux, Tyla Ordman, Rebecca Carter-Smith, Louise Currie) placed 8th. Boland U19A featured Emma Rickets, Tessa de Villiers, Danielle Burger and Caitlyn Leslie and the team placed 8th.

RHENISH SWIMMING GETS OFF TO A GREAT START

The Rhenish Swim team travelled to Durban to participate in a number of galas there at the start of February and to take part in the Midmar Mile.

Winners of the 4M Gala (Rhenish, Bloemhof, Paarl Girls’ and La Rochelle) as well as the coveted Boy/Girl Gala (Newlands), Rhenish Swim team started the year off on a promising win. The first gala of the new season was held at Rondebosch on Thursday 30 January. The swimmers were outstanding: they won most of the individual races and 4 of the 6 relays. A special mention must be made of the super Grade 8s- they are the strongest group of swimmers Rhenish has seen for a while and won both of their relays by halfa-pool length. The results were as follows: 1st Rhenish 2nd Rustenberg 3rd Herschel

Musica Perpetua in Wellington

Simon Venter (Graad 12)

Mnr. When one hears of Germany, various names come to mind: Mercedes, Porsche, Siemens, Berlin, Stuttgart, Beethoven, Bach … but for Eric Collins (Grade 11) only one thing comes to mind: “German, a gateway to my future.” Eric wrote the National German Olympiad at the end of last year with some of his German class mates at Stellenberg High School. Various schools nationwide wrote this Olympiad. Eric achieved first place, sharing his position with a student at the International German School in Gauteng. Through this illustrious achievement Eric is afforded the the opportunity to represent South Africa, in August of this year, at the International German Olympiad in Frankfurt, Germany. The trip, sponsored by the Goethe Institute, will be all-inclusive. The Goethe Institute is not only a sponsor of this event, but also a generous giver to Paul Roos (laptops, books, posters et

cetera). The recent study tour to Poland definitely helped Eric in achieving such great success. “The exposure to the culture and actual

language. Eric joined the German class in 2012 (Grade 9) when he moved from Krugersdorp, Gauteng, to Stellenbosch. He quickly became one of the best students in the class, although he had never had any association with German before. It has always been his dream to do his post-graduate overseas, so it was convenient for him to join the German class. German students receive an international certificate (Zertifikat Deutsch) which one can use to apply for studies at universities in Germany. “I could not have done it without the support of the German class and especially Ms. Conradie,” Eric adds humbly. Through Eric’s remarkable achievement we can truly see that: Deutsch ist einfach. Deutsch ist cool. Deutsch ist wirklich genial! (German is easy. German is cool. German is simply genius!)

Glenn Stein, together with Paul Roos, making SA history

The first school in South Africa with its own app Coenraad van Zyl

A certain Mr Glenn Stein has developed an app for mobile devices with all the needed information for your weekly planner. Not only does this app enable Old Boys to stay in touch, but it also provides the user with the entire history of Paul Roos Gymnasium – not to mention the fact that from now on Concipio, your favourite weekly, is on tap, ready ro read and raring to go!

What is your association with Paul Roos? I have no previous association with Paul Roos, other than having two friends who went there once and matriculated in 2006. That has obviously changed since starting on this app, and I must say that I have really enjoyed working with some of the staff and students, apart from learning about the strong culture of tradition at Paul Roos. What is your profession and where were you educated/trained? I am the founder and chief technical officer for Speak Mobile, a mobile application design & development studio based in Cape Town. What made you decide to design this specific app? We were quite interested in building an app for a school since this has not yet been done in South Africa.

Concipio (Paul Roos Gymnasium’s weekly newletter) recently interviewed Glen, who came up with quite a number of interesting thoughts and facts.

What are the qualities of the app (what is one able to do with it), and why is it so unique? It’s a general-purpose, school-related content aggregation tool for students, teachers, parents and Old Boys alike. The app can be used to access news and info relating to sports, general news, culture, Old Boys, history, timetables, digital Concipio downloads and links to social feeds.

Where and when will one be able to download it? In time for the launch of the 250th Concipio! It can be downloaded on any Android or Apple devices. However, there will also be a mobisite version. Do you have any interesting future plans that we should be on the look out for? Also watch out for an app called Aweza - a multi-lingual South African language phrase translator. This is one of our in-house projects that we are INCREDIBLY excited about launching!
