Dye your Easter eggs What you will need:
Hard-boiled or fresh eggs, Food colouring, White vinegar, Measuring spoons and cup, Bowl, Spoon, Paper towels, Round stickers, Painters’ removable tape, cut into thin strips.
Hint: You can either hard-boil eggs before you dye them, or blow them after dyeing. To reduce the chances of your eggs cracking when hard-boiling, use very fresh eggs and make sure they are at room temperature. Cook in a small saucepan so eggs move around less, and remember they should simmer rather than boil. To blow eggs, use a long needle to make a small hole at each end of egg. Place your mouth on one end and blow the contents into a bowl. Rinse egg out with water and a little vinegar then allow to dry on paper towels.

How to dye: Fill a bowl with 3 cups hot water, 2 tbs vinegar, 3 capfuls blue food colouring and 1 capful red food colouring. Mix to combine, then dip eggs in, carefully removing with a spoon when they reach desired.

To satisfy your sweet tooth without the guilt this Easter, we share some AWSUM tips on how to control your cravings: Moderate and regulate: Top five tips for controlling cravings 1. Avoid skipping meals: If your blood sugar levels are low, you are more likely to give in to temptations. It’s important to start the day with a nutritious breakfast to resist consuming calorific mid-morning snacks. 2. Choose low GI carbohydrates: Maintain your energy levels throughout the day with a healthy diet consisting of small portions of low GI carbohydrates and regular
consumption of lean protein foods. 3. Combat deficiency with supplementation: Chromium is a natural mineral found in the body which helps to move glucose from the bloodstream into the cells to be used as energy. 3. You can dry your fresh parsley by tying a bunch together and hanging it upside down in a cool, dry place. When the parsley is completely dry, remove the stems and store the dried leaves in an airtight container. You can also dry out your parsley in a slightly warm oven or in a dehydrator.
Lightly sear sirloin 3 minutes a side in the pan while your cut up veggies are roasting in the over drizzled with olive oil. Veggies should take 35-45minutes on 180 degrees. Interact Charity Father and Son Adventure Day Saturday 22 March saw the Interact Father and Son Adventure Day in aid of Canaan Care Centre. The Liliyfontein Interact group has supported this centre, which provides facilities for persons with severe and profound physical and mental disabilities, for the past 10 years. By providing a day for Dad’s and their sons to work and play together we not only raised funds for a great cause, but also gave the fathers and opportunity to show their sons how important they are.
Grade 10 Leadership and Teamwork skills tested at Pecan ValleyAdventure Day The grade 10 year of our Adventure Programme is all about learning survival techniques. The grade 10’s went off to Pecan Valley for a survival boot camp. They were set tasks which tested their leadership and teamwork skills under time pressure. Oh yes – they also had fun!
Grade 11 Takes to the Airport The Grade 11 Tourism class took a trip out to the East London Airport to see the theory they had learnt in the classroom, in action. Thanks to Mr Riaan Johnston for his time and for sharing his expertise with the students.

Cambridge High School 6 APRIL 2014 Union Festival
During the short holidays, many Cambridge teams participated in various pre-winter season sports festivals. The First Girls’ Hockey team and the First Team Rugby travelled to Graaff-Reinet where they participated in the Union Festival.

The rugby boys played two games at the festival, beating the host school, Union High 32 – 8 in their first game and beating Gill College (from Somerset East) 18 – 10.

The photo was taken at the Union Festival in Graaff-Reinet. The girls played five games over the three-day period. The girls thoroughly enjoyed their time at the festival and have returned home in good spirits, looking forward to the season ahead.

Group of Grade 10 Life Science learners who recently went on an outdoor education excursion to the Nahoon beach. Here they investigated tidal pools and on their return had to complete a project on the tidal pools at Nahoon.
Beaconhurst High School Careers Day
The second annual Careers Day was held at Beaconhurst School on the 19th of March. The event was organised again this year after a very successful day was held in 2013. The informative event was well co-ordinated by teacher, Gary Galanos, with assistance from the Rotarians. The event was aimed at high school learners and offered them the opportunity to explore different occupations and to speak to representatives from tertiary education institutions. The learners were enthralled by the many high quality displays and also had the opportunity to chat to the exhibitors about the relevant occupations and institutions. The event grew this year to over 60 exhibitors, with learners from 25 different East London Schools in attendance. Exhibits were set up in the hall area of Beaconhurst Primary School and in most of the high school classrooms. Many occupations were included such as Travel agent, veterinarian, dietician, banker, IT analyst, etc. Some exciting things also happened outside, where AV8 pilots had landed their helicopter on the school field and mechanics had some mean machines on display. All in all it was a very successful day and we look forward to further growth of the event next year.

Grade 8 Outing
While Careers Day was occupying most of the school, the Beaconhurst Grade 8 learners had the opportunity to expand their Natural Science knowledge. They walked down from school to the beach for a day of exploration. The grade 8 learners spent the morning working on a project which involved observing the different life forms they managed to find on the beach, in the sea and rock pools. Armed with pens, notepads and cameras they had great fun identifying different sea creatures and documenting their findings as required for their project. A super day was had by all and they most certainly returned to school more knowledgeable and with excitement to complete their projects.
Landservice
The members of the Land Service Club officially kick off the year with their annual Camp. This year the grade 7s joined the High School. A total of 32 learners left the school on Friday the 28th of February. The camp started off in Kei Mouth where the learners pitched tents and bonded with a little beach time. Some of the learners slept in the communal bathrooms and the busses because of a heavy rain that started early Friday night. Saturday morning the learners set out on a 16 km hike to Double Mouth where they spent some time learning about God and bonding through games. A group of the learners were having so much fun that they decided to sleep under the stars all night. Sunday morning they safely departed from Double Mouth and arrived at school full of spirit and tired.

Hudson Park High School APRIL 2014 7 Pastoral
Hudson Park High School
The recently built High Performance Centre Complex at Hudson Park High School was officially opened on 20 March to commemorate the hard work and dedication of all involved in creating a showpiece and functional legacy that we will all be proud of for many years to come. The honoured guests, the contracting team and personnel involved with the building were treated to a Cheese and Wine function to celebrate the magnificent facilities consisting of a Water Polo Pool, CrossFit Gym and Fathers’/Supporters’ Club facility. During the construction, four additional classrooms were also built to ensure that the balance was kept within the four pillars of the school.
Our Cheerleading squad started last year by the very capable Lindi Mtukayekwa and with the support of EXCO and Ms Acton. The squad initially faced many challenges, but after performances at the Derby Days against Dale and Cambridge last year, the girls’ professional attitude and wellchoreographed displays and dress, made them an instant success with the supporters. Their motto is to support all sports at Hudson Park with both enthusiasm and Hudson Spirit, and this was most evident at the last game of the season, the FNB Classic Clash, against Cambridge. The

At our recent Junior Oratory Competition held in the Crewe Hall, the standard was high as the judges had to determine who the best speaker on the day was. Nathan le Roux came 1st at the Youth Olympic Qualifying Triathlon Competition in Cape Town and he excelled at the SA Triathlon Championships in East London on the 23 March by finishing first in the Youth Olympic qualifying category 15-18. He has now won two qualifying legs in Cape Town and East London respectively and awaits final selection for the Youth Olympics taking place in August in China.
Friday 11 April and Saturday 12 April will see the Hudson hockey, netball and rugby teams take on Cambridge in the first Derby day for 2014 at Hudson Park. Our U14A coaches, Cline Jafta and Dave Alers, had to make some positional changes due to injuries after their tour to the Grey Festival during the holidays, but the injuries will not interfere with a team that is ready for Cambridge on Saturday. Considering the fact that Cambridge 1st XV won four out of four of their previous games this year compared to Hudson’s two out of five, we have to admit that Cambridge might be the favourite going into Saturday’s Derby event. Hudson Park rugby players, however, are known to play with heart and commitment as the school that plays with heart, no matter what the opposition might be.

Hudson Park High School has chosen Godspell as its musical production this year. Directed by multi-award-winning director, Pierre Perold, Godspell was written by Stephen Schwartz and is based on a novel by John-Michael Tebelak. The musical is composed of a series of parables, mostly based on the Gospel of Matthew. The parables are interspersed with a variety of modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns. The passion of Christ features briefly near the end of the performance. The show opened on Broadway in 1971, and was initially met with some reserve because of the musical’s interpretation and portrayal of Christ. Godspell has enjoyed many successful runs and revivals. In fact, if anything, Godspell is more relevant now than when it was first performed. It reiterates morals, beliefs and faith, which are severely lacking in our modern society.

Mr Perold has breathed new life into the musical and, along with a talented cast of 15 pupils, promises to entertain and to leave a message that will stay with one long after the actors have taken their final bow and the houselights have come on. The choreography is by Mrs Natalie Oberem and the musical direction by Miss Rosanne Lesch. The dates for Godspell are 11, 12, 14 – 17 April 2014 and the Matinee on 16 April 2014. Hockey The Hudson Park 1st girls team toured Cape Town to take part in the Fairmont Tournament. The girls excelled in remaining unbeaten and not having a goal scored against them. They won the tournament beating Stellenberg 1-0 in a very tough final. Cheneal Raubenheimer, the SA U/18 player in the side, scored 15 goals! Hudson Park vs Hillcrest (Kenya) won 11-0, vs Fairmont won 2-0, vs Hermanus won 5-0, vs Paarl Girls High won 3-0 and vs Paarl Valei won 3-0. The U/16A boys played in the Woodridge Festival and with a day still to play had beaten Dale College 2-0, Stirling 3-0, Cambridge 2-0 and Woodridge Invitation 2-0. The U/14A girls and boys played in the Rob Taylor Festival. The boys beat Krugersdorp 6-0 and Cambridge 2-0, lost to Grey PE 0-3 and Queens 0-1 and drew with Pearson 1-1. The girls lost Collegiate 0-4, lost GHS 0-1, drew Pearson 1-1, drew Woodridge 1-1 and beat Krugersdorp 4-0.

PushBullet By no means is PushBullet new, but thanks to an update this month, the app is now one of the most powerful and useful apps you will ever install on both your phone and computer. For those new, PushBullet began as an incredibly useful app that would allow you to “push” links, files, or other goodies from your computer to phone and then back again. We have watched as the functionality for it has grown immensely over the last six or so months, but this month its creators added notification mirroring. With notification mirroring, PushBullet will show a pop-up in your Chrome PC browser every time you get a notification from any app on your phone (assuming you enabled it). You can choose to dismiss it on phone, turn off mirroring from that app, or go on about your business. I don’t know about you, but the fact that I don’t have to pick-up my phone each time it buzzes, and can keep my eyes glued to my computer, plus wipe the notification from my phone, is freaking ground-breaking.
