GET INVOLVED The TiE Young Entrepreneurs (TYE) is an award-winning program which brings together high school aged youth to ideate, form teams and build a viable business in 6 months. Started by the TiE Boston community in 2007, over 400 young entrepreneurs from the New England area have participated in the program. The results are astounding from our alumni: • • • • •
100% report increase of skills to work effectively as a team 97% report increased ability to lead 100% report increased confidence 90% report participating in TYE influenced their studies and career in STEM 40% state that participating in TYE inspired them to start their own company
TYE has demonstrated that entrepreneurship can be taught; and that an entrepreneurial mindset inculcated early in life better prepares students for a competitive and rapidly-changing work environment. TYE helped me grow as a person. People think this course is just for business and although its main purpose is business, TYE helped me become a better leader, helped me cope with problems during a team project, and still taught me everything I know about business. A.K., Class of 2017
This program has helped me learn way more than just basic entrepreneurship skills, I’ve learned how to work as a team also. I met some of my best friends and I got the chance to work with the best team ever. This is an opportunity I’ll never forget! P.S., Class of 2018
The program has gone beyond TiE Boston and is now taught in 28 chapters throughout the world. From September to April, teams participate in a variety of workshops with topics ranging from lean business canvas, marketing, finance, and public speaking while being paired up with mentors from the TiE community. Each year, the teams compete to win up to $5K in seed funding at the Boston chapter and have a chance to win up to an additional $5K at TYE Globals.
To mark the 10-year anniversary of its founding by TiE Boston and becoming a global program, TiE Boston will host the 2019 Global Competition in June 2019. Year after year, TiE Boston members have supported the personal and professional growth of participants with their time and dedication. As witness to the number of success stories that have emerged from the TYE program, TiE Boston fully recognizes the importance of treating each young person as a future entrepreneur, thought leader, and innovator. To support efforts in hosting 28 chapter teams from across the world, TiE Boston Chapter Member and Past President, Vinit Nijhawan will serve as Chair to the TYE Global Host Committee.
TYE really helped me see medicine in a new light, a field I have been interested in since I was a kid. I got to research and present predictive analytics, an up and coming field of technology in the medical space, while conceptualizing ways to fit this idea into a unique business plan. This was an extremely eyeopening, challenging experience that forced my team and I out of our comfort zones. J.P., Class of 2016

Lifetime Achievement Award 2018 Recipient: Medical Technology Entrepreneur Dr. Amar Sawhney TiE Boston is honored to bestow its 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Amar Sawhney, one of the foremost innovators and entrepreneurs in medical technology. Dr. Sawhney currently serves as the President and CEO of Ocular Therapeutix, Inc. Previously, he served as Chairman of Augmenix, Inc., which was acquired by Boston Scientific in September, 2018 for $600 million. Prior to that, Dr. Sawhney founded Confluent Surgical (acquired by Covidien), Focal Inc. (acquired by Genzyme), and Access Closure, Inc. (acquired by Cardinal Health). His innovations are the subject of over 120 issued and pending patents in biomaterials and bio-surgery. The TiE Boston Board awards the Lifetime Achievement Award when an individual has made a lasting impact in the business community, and a significant contribution to the success of TiE-Boston. TiE-Boston’s Lifetime Achievement Award this year honors Dr. Sawhney for having distinguished himself as one of the country’s leading medical technology entrepreneurs. Dr. Sawhney, an IIT-Delhi graduate, is always trying to solve unmet needs in medi-
cal technology, and in the process has founded numerous successful medical device companies. His inventions include several “first of a kind” surgical sealants to be approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration, including DuraSeal for neurosurgery, FocalSeal for lung surgery, and Mynx for femoral puncture sealing. We had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Sawhey about his success. We asked what motivates him to excel at everything he does. “I don’t profess to be a perfectionist, but I am persistent,” says Dr. Sawhney. “When I take on a mission, I ensure that it reaches a logical conclusion, with the best possible financial outcome, but also the best outcome for the team. His mantra for success is simple. “In my area of focus, which is medical innovation and entrepreneurship, I employ a value system. At the apex is identifying a genuine unmet need, or a worthwhile cause to focus on,” says Dr. Sawhney. “Next comes the right people to onboard for the journey, with the right values. And
finally, we need to be good stewards of capital, to generate value for our shareholders.” Sawhney currently serves on the board of directors of EcoSikh, Axtria, The Stroke Project, Augmenix and Ocular Thera-
peutix, where he is also a founder of the latter two companies. Through his family foundation, Dr. Sawhney has been active in charitable causes that are dear to him, which include education, wildlife and the environment, with a focus on India. Sawhney has been recognized for his contributions in innovation and philanthropy with several awards including being named a “Champion of Change” by the White House and “Outstanding American by Choice” by the US Citizenship and Immigration Service, “Five Most Innovative Medical Device CEOs” by MassDevice, MassMedic’s best startup company award, the Frost and Sullivan Product innovation award, MIT Global
Indus Technovators Award, the E&Y Regional Entrepreneur of the Year award, Mass High Tech All Star award, New England Choice Awards, The Immigrant Entrepreneur Award, Indian Institute of Delhi’s Distinguished Alumni Award, and the University of Texas’s Outstanding Young Engineering Graduate award. Dr. Sawhney holds an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a B. Tech. in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi.

Meet the Executive Chef behind the 2018 TiE Boston Gala To kick off the lead up to Gala, we had a chance to sit down with the Executive Banquet Chef of the Four Seasons Boston this past week. We thought it would be exciting to take a peek and learn about Chef Angel Cotto and his creative process when curating a menu for an event hosted in the luxury venue. Behind the youthful face is a seasoned veteran of the restaurant industry with roughly two decades of experience under his belt. Growing up with Puerto Rican roots, Chef Angel Cotto recalls being fascinated watching his Aunt in the kitchen when he was a child. While in high school, he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do but found his calling while crafting dishes for his friends and family whenever he had the chance. After high school, Chef Cotto entered the prestigious culinary program at Johnson and Wales University; notable alumni include Chef and TV Personality Emeril Lagasse and James Beard Award Winner Michelle Bernstein. Coming from a humble background, Angel hit a roadblock keeping up with the high cost of tuition during his second year of schooling. The faculty saw his talent and offered two options: 1) become a residential advisor to offset the costs or 2) jump into the field and start gaining experience. Faced with both options, Chef Cotto realized that he wanted to pursue his passion and knew that if he was dedicated and worked hard, he would find his path. After some years, he finally approached the Four Seasons Boston. After a rigorous four-stage interview process, Angel found himself at the luxury venue and is now the Executive Banquet Chef. Chef Cotto doesn’t identify as an entrepreneur but his work contains an entrepreneurial spirit. He is not a stranger to working hard and often finds himself working twelve-hour shifts. He chronicled the time that he spent working under other chefs, where he learned to work long and grueling hours. Even though the road to get to where he is today was challeng-

ing, he stated that he is thankful for the work he has put in. He laughs, “Those weren’t the greatest years; I spent a lot of my younger years working a lot of hours to get where I am. It was worth it though and there are no regrets.” We began to truly see his passion for his work come alive when we moved the conversation to his creative process when approaching an event at the Four Seasons. He draws inspiration from websites, magazines, photos and his surroundings. If he knows that a member of his team can provide more authenticity to a particular type of cuisine, he will ask them….from his sous chefs to his dishwashers. Chef Cotto also strives to make events modern and intuitive by incorporating elements that primarily focus on presentation. This process is arduous and all-consuming for him, but that passion is ultimately conveyed through the food in its final form. Something that was emphasized on
more than one occasion during our conversation was the importance of supporting and trusting your team. This stems from the support that he receives daily as a chef, from the Four Seasons itself. He shared, “I have a great team. I am a good-hearted person and I put my time and energy into these events and I try to go out of my way to make them the best that they can be and it shows.” Through his own empowerment, he empowers everyone that he works with to play an active role while hosting an event. From the event staff to the sous chefs, everyone there plays an integral role in events from conception to execution. Chef Cotto and his team go above and beyond to provide an incredible experience that highlights events and dazzles guests. We are excited to experience what his team has to offer as the TiE Boston Charter Member Community comes together to celebrate at the Four Seasons Boston!
TiE Boston Gala Performance by Avanti Nagral When you think of a traditional entrepreneur, a vibrant singer and songwriter pursuing a dual degree at Harvard and Berklee probably isn’t the first person who comes to mind. To Avanti Nagral, this duality of her work speaks to the theme of duality present throughout her entire life. Avanti spent half of her life in Boston and the other half in Bombay, India. She effortlessly balances her life as a student and her life as a professional artist, constantly switching between using her left brain and using her right. At graduation, Avanti will be the first person to have graduated from a new dual degree program between Harvard University and the Berklee College of Music. Both music and entrepreneurship have been a constant thread throughout her life; she says that “[she] has been doing music since [she] was in utero.” Avanti grew up in a household where music and entrepreneurship were at the forefront through her mother’s love of devotional music and her father being an entrepreneur. Since her youth, Avanti has been curating a robust musical repertoire from Christian music to traditional musical theater. She got her start in theater and Broadway and ever since has known that she was meant to be a professional performer. Avanti
got the push that she needed during her gap year between high school and college. It was during this time that she found her voice as an artist and decided to pursue her music career full time, without giving up the opportunity to advance her knowledge through higher education. While she certainly has more going on than the average twenty-year-old, she remains humble when speaking about her busy schedule. She laughs about juggling it all saying, “if Obama and Oprah have the same number of hours in the day that [she does, she] can afford to balance everything.” She uses an entrepreneurial mindset when talking about all that she does, something that she is very familiar with through her father. Many do not realize how much of an entrepreneurial spirit musicians must possess; in Avanti’s case, she is the brand, product, and business all wrapped into one. While this isn’t entrepreneurship in the traditional sense that the world has come to know, Avanti’s work still mirrors that of an entrepreneur. Avanti also understands that it is important to always be on the forefront of innovation, something important to entrepreneurs and startups. She was the first person to release a virtual reality music video in South East Asia. She is also focused on creating music that has meaning and heart. Her latest song “The Other Side” speaks a lot to identity. Avanti says that “the song has resonated particularly with a lot of immigrants and first-generations, who find themselves being stuck between different aspects of their identity, with half of their hearts “on the other side”. From an entrepreneurship angle, it’s often difficult to balance the multiple roles and hats you have to don, and this song is about finding all the aspects of “your other side”.” Musical career aside, Avanti has also recently started her own digital entertainment startup called Golden Milk Media with the mission to create socially responsible and inspired digital content centered around music, film,
and other creative content. She is also a passionate advocate for women’s health and youth education, particularly in South East Asia and India. Avanti is able to focus herself in so many areas because she has built a supportive group around her, not only within her friends and family but her team of management, graphic designers, videographers etc. She makes a great point when she talks about the importance of building out a great team, not only to help assuage mental health and offer support but to delegate tasks too. Often times entrepreneurs do not spend enough time building out the best team to help them, and it causes stress and isolation. We are so excited to have someone like Avanti perform at our Gala event. With her passion for her art, business, and social responsibility, she truly embodies the spirit of an entrepreneur that we support at our organization. As a young woman, she is helping to build the next generation of entrepreneurship through her work, so we are so excited to collaborate with someone like Avanti.
