About The Tide

The Tide Climbing Centre is a family friendly, state of the art climbing centre in north Cornwall, 7 miles from Wadebridge. We cater for all sorts of climbing and are in the unique position to offer both bouldering and rope climbing under one roof.

Our Facility has over 100 bouldering problems for you and your students to try, as well as 22 lines of roped climbing and 4 auto belay points. Our mission is to position The Tide Climbing Centre at the forefront of inclusive climbing in the South West. We offer a range of coaching and kids climbing clubs to help climbers of all ages and abilities access and progress within the sport.

Here at the Tide we also offer NICAS and NICAS Bouldering development programmes. They are a fantastic way to develop a child’s ability and skill with an accredited and recognised programme.

What is the difference between ropedclimbing and bouldering?

Roped climbing usually requires at least two people. One person securely attached to the rope (the climber), the other controls the rope, (the belayer). Roped-climbing requires a harness and allows you to climb longer routes. Here at The Tide we offer two types of roped climbing, Top roping (Where ropes are already in place) and for more advanced climbers, Lead climbing, where climbers ‘clip in’ to sections of the wall as they climb.

Bouldering is a type of climbing that requires no ropes and climbers may ascend or traverse the wall. Bouldering is done at lower heights with protective matting underfoot. Bouldering can be more inclusive to all abilities and experience levels.

How does climbing benefit young people?

Climbing is a fantastic way to improve motor skills, it helps to hone spatial and directional awareness whilst also boosting physical skills like agility, balance and coordination. It is also a really fun way to bond with their peers.

Climbing and bouldering can benefit young people in a number of ways and will help to...

• Develop movement and coordination

• Improve problem solving

• Grow confidence

• Keep physically fit in a fun environment

• Learn to assess risk

• Develop teamwork, communication and trust

• Develop independence

What we offer here at The Tide.

Here at the tide we want to work with you, we are happy to create sessions to suit your needs, we offer two main packages, but will always adjust our sessions to suit individual needs!

One off Sessions

If you’re looking to introduce your students to climbing, you can book a one off session. These sessions include 1 hour of instruction in our roped climbing and bouldering areas with all equipment provided. This gives students a chance to try both climbing styles. This is a fantastic way to introduce them to the world of climbing.

Our instructors will help to keep the session fun whilst also teaching the core of climbing and climbing safety. It will also be a great way for students to gain an insight into a new sport which they can progress outside of the classroom too!

Progressive course

Why not take climbing to the next level with your class and give them something to work towards. We can offer progressive courses that allow students to work towards or complete a NICAS qualification. Students can return again and again to build upon what they have previously learnt. We can tailor the sessions to your students to focus on a specific area of climbing, this might be using ropes, problem solving or technical ability, all of which will lead to them becoming stronger climbers and learning new essential skills. Take a look at the NICAS curriculum on the next page to find out more.

What is NICAS and NIBAS and how do they benefit students?

We are really proud to offer both NICAS and NIBAS courses. These are UK-wide schemes designed to promote climbing development and accredit individual achievement on artificial climbing walls. They’re a starting point for people wishing to take up climbing and mountaineering, from novice to experienced, starting from age 7. It’s a bit like earning swimming badges, but for climbing!

We provide students with their own personal logbooks to log their progression. After each level is completed they will receive certification which they can use to gain access to other NICAS/NIBAS accredited centres.

What is NICAS/NIBAS?

NICAS - National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme - This is based around climbing with ropes, developing skills for longer and higher routes whilst learning key belaying skills.

NIBAS - National Indoor Bouldering Award Scheme. Bouldering is based around shorter climbs without ropes over padded matting.

What can NICAS courses help with?

NICAS climbing helps students to...

• Develop climbing movement skills and improve levels of ability

• Learn climbing rope-work and how to use equipment appropriately

• Develop risk assessment and risk management skills in the sport

• Work as a team, communicate with, and trust a climbing partner

• Provide a structure for development, motivation and improved performance

• Develop an understanding of the sport, its history and future challenges

• Provide a record of personal achievement

• Point the way to further disciplines and challenges in climbing beyond the scheme.

What do NICAS schemes count towards?

Both NICAS schemes allow climbers to demonstrate personal progression and commitment over a period of time - this means they can count towards things like the Duke of Edinburgh and GCSE P.E.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

Climbing is a fantastic way to learn and grow, no matter who you are! We truly believe that climbing is for everyone and it is a fantastic tool to learn both mentally and physically.

Climbing is brilliant for building up our physical strength, teaching us to use our muscles in a different way; roped climbing is specifically good for this as it provides additional support for climbers, and allows them to have a break!

Climbing is also a fantastic tool for helping with mental stimulation too! It’s brilliant for building and developing cognitive ability and problem solving skills.

Climbing is a self driven exercise, there is no need to compete with anyone, individuals are able to build on their own strengths and work on their weaknesses at their own pace!

Our team are trained to be sensitive and supportive to individuals needs, they’ll spend time getting to know each individual and work out the best way to help them grow!

“Great set up and wonderfully attentive and patient staff. Our son was part of a SEN group and he loved every minute. Highly recommended, we will definitely be back.”

Home Education

We understand that everyone learns differently and are proud to help support home education students. You can pair with other home education students or come in just as you are!

We are able to offer guided sessions for home education students to help work through the Physical Education curriculum with you, or if you feel confident in supervising and guiding your student, you are welcome to bring them into the centre whenever suits you best.

Climbing is a great way for students to build up trust in a group setting, it’ll also provide them the opportunity to meet new friends too.

Our instructed sessions are always led in an engaging and exciting way in order to bring out each individual’s best and to show them just how fun P.E. can be!
