TRAMPOLINES

You see them in backyards everywhere. Join Tidbits as we find out the story behind them! ● George Nissen was a three-time National Tumbling Champion for the years 1935–1937.

As a young adult he became fascinated watching the acrobats at the circus falling into the nets from the high wire, sometimes doing amazing tricks and twists as they bounced. He also watched vaudeville acts that used springboards in their acts. One actor would pretend to fall into the orchestra pit, only to bounce back up on the stage. And he’d heard that Eskimos stretched walrus skins between stakes in the ground and then bounced up and down on them just for fun.

Inspired by a love of gymnastics, Nissen wanted to invent some kind of “jumping table.” ● He started work on his invention in 1926 while still in school, scavenging materials from the local dump, and tinkered with the idea for over ten years. Finally, using the rails from a bed, rope, strips of inner tube, and some canvas, Nissen and a local gymnastics coach named Larry Griswold came up with a prototype. They took it to the YMCA where Nissen worked as an instructor to test market it. The kids stood in long lines for a chance to bounce on it.

TRAMPOLINES (continued) ● When Nissen graduated from college in 1938 he set about improving the invention.

He called it the “trampoline,” from the Spanish word trampolin which means “diving board.”

He began to mass produce them, but couldn’t understand why they weren’t selling. He found that people saw it as something suitable only for the circus or professional performers. So he strapped a trampoline to the top of his car and took off cross-country, giving exhibitions anywhere a crowd was gathered: schools, fairs, playgrounds, and sports events, taking orders on the spot. ● When World War II started, he convinced the Army and the Navy that a trampoline would be a good part of a pilot training program. Pilots training on a trampoline became less fearful of being upside-down. They learned to control the falling and the turning of their bodies, and it helped them hone their balance and body control in mid-air situations. Soldiers who used trampolines in the service ordered them when they went home after the war. Business continued to improve. In 1948, trampolining was included in the NCAA and AAU list of gymnastic events at official competitions. In the 1950s it swept the country as a fad. ● Nissen went on to build a very successful sports equipment empire, manufacturing gymnastics equipment and trampolines. George Nissen holds over 30 patents on sports and fitness equipment. At the age of 83, he won the Senior Fitness Award from the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Nissen works to pass on his enthusiasm and love for the sport of gymnastics, which is where the story of the trampoline began: each year the Nissen Award is given to the outstanding collegiate gymnast in the nation.

● On May 16, 1717, French writer Francois-Marie Arouet, better known as Voltaire, is imprisoned in the Bastille. His satirical attack on politics and religion had infuriated the government, and Voltaire was arrested.

Several times in his life, Voltaire was forced to flee one step ahead of arrest. ● On May 18, 1861, the Humboldt Times newspaper casts first lady Mary Todd Lincoln in an unflattering light when it recounts a tale of how Mrs. Lincoln had usurped her husband's presidential duty of appointing federal offices. According to the report, Mary Todd Lincoln took it upon herself to appoint a stranger to any office he desired. ● On May 14, 1916, a lead article in the Times of London proclaims that an insufficiency of munitions is leading to defeat for Britain on the battlefields of World War I. The article prompted the creation of a Ministry of Munitions. ● On May 15, 1942, gasoline rationing begins in 17 Eastern states as an attempt to help the American war effort during World War II. By the end of the year, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had ensured that mandatory gasoline rationing was in effect in all 50 states. ● On May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court hands down a unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, ruling that racial segregation in public education is unconstitutional. The decision dealt with Linda Brown, a young black girl who had been denied admission to her local elementary school. ● On May 19, 1967, one of the first major treaties designed to limit the spread of nuclear weapons goes into effect as the Soviet Union ratifies an agreement banning nuclear weapons from outer space. The United States, Great Britain and several dozen other nations had already signed and/or ratified the treaty. ● On May 13, 1981, Pope John Paul II is shot and wounded at St. Peter's Square in Rome by Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Agca. Agca claimed that he had planned to go to England to kill the king, but it turned out there was only a queen and "Turks don't shoot women."

Vetting a Pet-Sitter DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I recently got a new job, and I need to have someone come and feed my cats and walk the dog because I don't get home until late at night. How can I find a pet sitter I can trust? -- Missing My Pets Already DEAR MISSING: DogVacay.com, a pet boarding service, recently put out a list of five things you should do when considering a potential pet sitter. Hopefully these will help in your search: --Interview the pet sitter, and have your pet interview him or her as well. See how the sitter and pets interact.

--Ask for references at the very least. While pet sitters aren't required to be licensed or insured, they should have references you can contact -- typically other clients. Some pet sitters will have a certification through a professional organization like Pet Sitters International, meaning they have taken additional pet-sitting and business courses

offered by that organization.

--Ask basic but important questions. Nothing's too trivial for your pets. What time will the sitter come? Where will your dog be walked? What's a typical visit like?

--Give the sitter as much info as possible about your pets.

Once you've decided to take on a sitter, make sure he or she knows your pets' particular habits, favorite foods, specific medications and when to take them, etc.

--Monitor your pets. When you get home, how do your pets react to you? Do you notice behavioral changes? Are they handling your absence well? Pets might not take to a new schedule right away, but if they don't adjust, you may need to consider a new sitter or a different pet-care option.

Family dinner was a big deal in my home when I was growing up. No matter how busy we all were, no matter what else was going on in our lives, whoever was home sat down at the table and ate dinner together .

In fact, it was a BIG DEAL to be allowed to eat in front of the television. The only times I can really remember doing that were on Superbowl Sunday and, when I was a teen, watching X-Files with my dad and chowing on Brekkie Burgers.

So if you aren’t convinced yet, I definitely believe in the power of the family dinner.

Maybe the most important tip I will ever give you? Manage your expectations. Every single night isn’t going to be a scene out of Norman Rockwell or Martha Stewart’s imagination. And that’s OK! Shoot for calm and serene most of the time and accept that there will inevitably be nights when you need to hunker down in front of the TV with X-Files DVDs and a Brekkie Burger.

Here’s Dad’s Brekkie Burger Recipe: For each serving you need a Hambuger Patty, 2 slices of Bacon, one egg, a slice of Cheddar Cheese, hamburger bun and toppings. Fry the burger 5 minutes per side until done and cook your bacon until crisp.

Crack the egg into the bacon fat and cook over hard. Top with a piece of cheese and add to your burger.

Layer on any additional toppings.

TRAMPOLINES (continued) ● As a promotional stunt, Nissen taught a kangaroo to jump on a trampoline and then went to Egypt to bounce on top of a pyramid.

He trained the kangaroo using dried apricots as treats and quickly learned that the best way to keep from getting kicked was to hold “hands” with the kangaroo’s front paws. ● When officials at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital did a study, they found that four percent of the patients seen in their hospital emergency room over a five-year period in the mid-1990s were there with orthopedic injuries due to accidents on trampolines. About 70% of the accidents were due to more than one child being on the tramp at one time, a definite no-no. ● Jeff Schwartz of Illinois bounced on a trampoline for 266 hours, 9 minutes in 1981, setting a world record. (That’s just over 11 days.)

He was allowed breaks for eating, sleeping, and going to the bathroom. ● The record for the most consecutive somersaults on a trampoline is 3,333 and was set by Brian Hudson (UK) at Jumpers Rebound Centre, Gillingham, Kent, UK on September 18, 2003. ● A world record was set on July 24, 1999 when a team of 20 members of a trampoline club in West York, UK, did 29,503 somersaults in exactly five hours using two standard trampolines.

This averages out at just under 1,500 somersaults per person, or about five somersaults per minute. ● In 1986, Cleveland State University’s Delta Epsilon fraternity fielded a six-man team that set the Guinness World Record for continuous bouncing on a trampoline, with 53 days of jumping between six people. President Reagan called the team to congratulate them.

Thilda's Potato and Egg Salad This was a winning recipe in our Mother's Day Cooking contest.

5 pounds all-purpose potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks 6 large eggs 1/2 pound sliced bacon 1 cup mayonnaise 1/3 cup Dijon mustard 3/4 teaspoon adobo, substitute 1/2 teaspoon salt plus 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 cup dill pickles, chopped 1. In 5-quart saucepot, place potatoes and enough water to cover; heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover and simmer 10 to 12 minutes or until potatoes are fork-tender. Drain potatoes; cool slightly.

2. While potatoes are cooking, hard-cook eggs: In 3-quart saucepan, place eggs and enough cold water to cover by at least 1 inch. Heat to boiling over high heat.

Remove pan from heat; cover and let stand 15 minutes.

Pour off hot water and run cold water over eggs to cool.

Remove shells. Cut eggs into 1/2-inch chunks.

3. In nonstick 12-inch skillet, cook bacon over mediumlow heat until browned. Drain bacon on paper towels; crumble.

4. In large bowl, mix mayonnaise, mustard and adobo (or salt and pepper). Add warm potatoes, bacon, and pickles to bowl with mayonnaise mixture; stir with rubber spatula to combine. Gently stir in eggs. Serve warm or cover and refrigerate up to 2 days. Serves 16. ● Each serving: About 265 calories, 15g total fat (3g saturated), 91mg cholesterol, 300mg sodium, 27g total carbs, 2g dietary fiber, 6g protein.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 TRAMPOLINES (continued) ● In 1962, West Germany was the first country to host an international trampolining event. ● On a modern competitive trampoline, a skilled athlete can bounce to a height of up to 33 feet. ● In competitive trampolining, each contestant must perform two sets of maneuvers.

In the first set, everyone must complete the same ten basic moves which include the three standard shapes: tucked, piked, and straight. The second set is free-form in which contestants make up their own routines. In all routines, the contestant must begin and end on their feet. ● During a competition, a trampolinist is in contact with the trampoline bed for just 0.3 seconds between moves. In 2010, a new “Time of Flight” score was introduced into professional trampolining, which is calculated on how much time the trampolinist is in the air. To measure it, a box is fitted under the trampoline which measures every time the competitor hits the bed. ● There are five judges. When a performance is scored, the highest and lowest scores are tossed out and the remaining scores are added together to come up with the final tally.

TRAMPOLINES (continued) ● Nissen always wanted to have trampolining included in the Olympic Games.

This finally happened in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. In 2008, Nissen was able to travel to Beijing to watch the trampoline event at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He was given the honor of testing out the Olympic trampoline before the event. ● George Nissen died in San Diego, California, on April 7, 2010 at the age of 96 from complications from pneumonia, having seen his dream become a reality.

WOMEN IN HISTORY: THE LENNON SISTERS The Lennon family of Venice, California, was a big Catholic family with 12 siblings born in the 1930s and 40s. They all crowded into a twobedroom home, and their father supported the family as a milk man. ● The four oldest sisters, Dianne, Peggy, Kathy, and Janet, formed a singing group when they were in their teens. A classmate of theirs happened to be the Larry Welk, son of Lawrence Welk. One day Larry told the girls to come home with him and sing for his father. Although his famous father was sick in bed with the flu at the time, he listened to them sing. When they were done, he picked up the phone and booked them on the next Lawrence Welk Show. That was the beginning of a great career for the Lennon sisters, who sang as regulars on the program from 1955 until 1968. At the time of their debut, the youngest sister, Janet, was only 9 years old. ● As the girls grew up, Lawrence Welk worked hard to preserve their image as fresh-faced youngsters. In 1964, Peggy Lennon married the trumpet player from the Lawrence Welk show.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 LENNON SISTERS (continued) ● During their long tenure with the Lawrence Welk Show, they were paid only scale wages, but earned extra money by touring on the side. Welk was annoyed with their father, who insisted each girl be paid scale wages, rather than being paid at the far lower group rate. Within a few years they were earning enough money to allow the family to move into a six-bedroom home where six sisters and five brothers lived along with Grandma. ● Their first hit was a single released in 1956 called Tonight, You Belong to Me. It reached #15 on the charts, and was followed a few years later by a 1961 single Sad Movies Make Me Cry, which provided them with the only #1 single of their career. They turned out albums of classic songs, as well as coloring books, paper dolls, and story books. ● In 1969, the Lennon sisters left the Lawrence Welk Show in order to star in their own variety show called Jimmy Durante Presents the Lennon Sisters Hour. Six weeks before the show premiered, they were forced to deal with the shooting death of their father, William Lennon, by a delusional stalker named Chet Young, who believed himself married to Peggy and claimed her father stood in the way.

Young, who often had to be removed from the front steps of the Lennon family home by police, followed William Lennon to his work place at the Marina Del Rey golf course and shot him in the parking lot before escaping. William Lennon was 53 years old when he died. His wife was left with seven school age children still at home.

Two months later, the body of Chet Young was found in the trunk of his car, where he had shot himself using the same gun. The traumatized Lennon sisters kept up their schedule with their new variety show, but cancelled after the first year. ● In the 1970s, the sisters performed regularly on the Andy Williams Show and toured the country extensively. They played in Vegas and appeared on numerous game shows. ● In 1995, Larry Welk, Junior– the classmate who originally introduced them to his father– invited them to headline at the Welk Champagne Theater in the Ozark community of Branson, Missouri, and they’ve been performing there ever since.

Husband Thrashes About During Sleep

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 73-year-old husband has, in the past year, been jerking during his sleep.

His movements are quite wild at times. He has fallen out of bed three times during his "fighting" dreams.

He dreams he is in a fight at work, playing football or shooting things. Just last night, it was killing mice.

He jerks with his arms and legs.

I don't attempt to wake him, as one time he was on the verge of striking me. I did yell his name three times, and he finally woke up.

He has had two sleep tests and was told he has "half sleep apnea." What does that mean?

He takes no sleeping aids. I have never heard that such movements are a sign of sleep apnea. -- D.S. ANSWER: A good bet is that your husband has a condition called periodic limb movements of sleep. For many, such movements are bending of the big toe and ankle. For others, it's jerking of the legs and arms. Most often the person doesn't waken and has no recollection of what went on during the night. The bed partner and the condition of the blankets give testimony to what occurred during sleep.

If the person doesn't have daytime fatigue, then this disorder isn't considered a sleep problem for him or her.

It is for the one who shares the bed.

Sometimes periodic limb movements of sleep occur with another problem, restless leg syndrome. That's a creepy-crawly sensation in the legs that comes on in the

evening when sitting or in bed. The person is compelled to get up and move around to quell the feeling.

A warm bath before going to bed might calm your husband's movements. Decreasing the amount of caffeine he drinks and doing the same for all forms of tobacco could bring nocturnal peace for you and him.

If the situation doesn't clear, then Mirapex or Requip, two Parkinson's disease medicines, can put an end to the nighttime martial arts. Do tell his doctor about this. Periodic limb movements of sleep are, at times, associated with iron deficiency. I have no idea what "half sleep apnea" means.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Every now and then, my eyelid twitches. I don't think it's due to me being tired, because it can happen when I am wide awake in the morning. And I don't think it's due to stress -- I love my work. Furthermore, I don't drink any caffeinated beverages. What do you think is the significance of this? -- H.R. ANSWER: Nearly everyone has had a twitchy eyelid at some time in life. It's not a sign of illness. It's not something that lasts for any length of time. Fatigue, stress and caffeinated beverages all have been implicated as causes. But most people with a twitchy lid are like you; they have and do none of these things.

A washcloth soaked in warm water and placed on the involved, closed lid for a few minutes generally can stop the twitching. Or gentle massage of the involved, closed lid also can end it.

If it continues and lasts for longer periods, then a doctor has to be consulted.

It’s cyanoacrylate, better known as Super Glue and an estimated 90 percent of homes now have at least one tube of it. ● Harry Coover was a researcher working for Kodak Research Labs in 1942. He was trying to develop a clear plastic gunsight for use during World War II. Working with acrylate monomers– a type of acrylic– he discovered cyanoacrylates. The discovery wasn’t at all helpful for the purpose of clear gunsights because the cyanoacrylate stuck to everything and made a big mess. He set the discovery aside.

In 1951, Coover was working at the Tennessee Eastman Chemical Company trying to find a tough acrylate polymer for jet canopies. One day a fellow researcher, ironically named Dr. Fred Joyner, spread a film of ethyl cyanoacrylate between two prisms of a refractometer in order to see if it would refract light. It didn’t refract light, and the two men discovered it was impossible to pry the prisms apart again. They feared they’d be in trouble for ruining the expensive equipment, but the company realized the potential in the new adhesive. The glue went on the market in 1958 under the name Eastman Compound #910. Dr. Coover even appeared on the quiz show “I’ve Got a Secret” where he lifted host Gary Moore completely off the floor using a single drop of the glue. ● Cyanoacrylate is chemically known as C5H5NO2, but scientists call it CA for short.

It’s a highly reactive substance, but the addition of a bit of acid stabilizer prevents the CA from reacting and keeps it in a liquid state. When the acid stabilizer comes into contact with a catalyst, its stabilizing effect is neutralized. ● This allows the CA molecules to react with each other, forming long polymer chains.

The catalyst for the acid stabilizer is hydroxyl ions, which are located in every molecule of water. Every surface has a tiny amount of water on it, and there are always miniscule amounts of water available in the air. The water acts like a trigger, allowing the molecular structure of the CA to change. The molecules join up like a long series of popper beads. What was a thin liquid becomes a hard mass of molecular spaghetti noodles.

One of the biggest benefits veterans have is the home loan guaranty program. The Department of Veterans Affairs website (www.benefits.va.gov) has full details, but here are a few things you need to know if you're considering using it.

Benefits: You usually won't need a down payment, the closing costs are limited and can be paid by the seller, you can pay off the loan early without penalty, and you won't be stuck paying private mortgage insurance. The VA doesn't loan you the money, but it stands behind a loan you get from another source. The loan guaranty is insurance to the lender, which can be helpful if you've been turned down by traditional sources.

Eligibility: You must have decent credit, sufficient income and a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). The home must be for you to live in. To obtain a COE, you need to have been discharged under other than dishonorable conditions. To apply for the COE, you'll need VA Form 26-1880. See the VA website for a chart showing the qualifying wartime and peacetime periods, the qualifying active dates and the minimum number of service days required.

What You Can Do: Buy a home, build a home, buy and improve a home, install energy-related improvements, buy a manufactured home and/or lot to put it on.

Other Types of Loans: Cash-Out Refinance, which allows you to take the equity from your home for paying off debts, financing school or making improvements to your home; and Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan (IRRRL), which is a refinance program for your existing VA loan. Additionally, there are housing grants to help disabled veterans buy or modify a home.

Surprise Mom With Overnight Egg Dish Serve up a tasty brunch surprise for Mom on Mother's Day. It's an easy overnight egg dish like you've never tasted before -- fresh apples and apple-chicken sausage are the new ingredients that give it extra zip.

Whether you set up a pretty breakfast-in-bed tray or make place settings for the whole family at your kitchen table, she'll be thrilled by the celebration that focuses on her.

Let the kids prepare this brunch entree with another adult the night before.

There is cheese to shred, bread to cube and lots of eggs to crack -- perfect jobs for junior chefs. You also might want to prep some fruit and berries as a side to the egg dish.

MOTHER'S DAY EGG DISH 5 cups of 3/4-inch square cubes of bread from a sourdough or French baguette 5-6 links (about 3/4 pound) of chicken-apple pre-cooked sausage, cut into 1/2-inch slices 1 1/2 cups grated medium and sharp cheddar cheese 2 apples peeled and thinly sliced 6 eggs beaten 2 cups milk 1/2 teaspoon salt and cracked pepper to taste.

Put the following together the night before.

1. Set the cubes of bread in a buttered glass 8-inch-by-11inch baking dish. Sprinkle sausage, cheese and apples on top. Lightly toss together.

2. Combine beaten eggs, milk and salt and pepper in a bowl and pour mixture over all, making sure bread is soaked with the mixture. Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight.

3. In the morning, remove foil, preheat oven to 350 degrees and bake for 45-50 minutes.

4. Let stand for 10 minutes, then cut into serving pieces.

Water Seal Q: The house I just bought has a wooden deck in the back that has turned gray over the years. It's otherwise structurally sound. My question is, should I seal the deck against further water damage, or just stain it to the color I want and not worry about sealing it?

-- Judy H., Waycross, Ga. A: It's really up to you. Just staining the deck will give you the color you want, although in high-traffic areas the stain could wear away quickly. Many deck companies recommend using a combination stain/sealer product, which is basically a sealer with pigment added. The advantage of this, they say, is the sealer provides additional protection against water and weather damage, while the stain helps reduce fading from UV rays.

Sealers should last at least a year, with some lasting up to three years. You have a choice of either water-based or oil-based sealer; many professionals recommend oilbased products, which last longer.

Since you've just purchased the house and might not know when the deck was last maintained, consider having a professional deck contractor inspect it. Find out if there are any hidden issues, whether the deck needs maintenance prior to staining or sealing it. The deck will

likely need to be cleaned and may need to be sanded and pressure-washed prior to sealing or staining.

Once you've inspected and cleaned the deck, you can apply a stain or sealer (or both). If you decide to stain, pick a few sample colors that are a few shades darker or lighter than the shade you want. This is because different types or different conditions of deck wood can cause the color of the stain to appear different from the swatch color. Test each sample in an inconspicuous place and pick the best color for your wood.

Apply the stain or sealer on a dry day when the temperature is above 50 degrees F. Don't apply it in direct sunlight. Ideally, two dry days will help the stain or sealer dry completely and evenly, so check the weather forecast and plan accordingly.

Stir the sealer (don't shake it -- bubbles will form in it) or stain and apply a thin coat to a couple of boards at a time using a long-handled paint roller. Don't overapply -- the finish will not dry correctly and will feel tacky for days, at least.

If the finish puddles up, use another roller or a broom to spread out the puddles. To stain or seal corners, use a paintbrush. If you feel a second coat is needed, apply it in the same way, very thinly. Let the finish dry for at least 24 hours.

A note about cleanup: Any rags or cloths used to clean up spills or excess should not be piled up together. The evaporating finish can ignite and cause a fire. Wash rags by hand -- if you applied a water-based finish, use soapy water; if you applied an oil-based finish, use mineral spirits or paint thinner, then rinse -- and hang them outdoors to dry, spaced well apart.

Taking the right steps at the beginning is crucial -- and difficult because of all the choices that have to be made.

When can we sign up? Three months before we turn 65, the month we turn 65, and three months afterward.

If you're still working at age 65 and have a group plan through your employer, you might be able to keep that coverage. Check with your employer's healthcare administrator for specific questions.

Q: I recently inherited a set of Majolica figurines.

Although they are rather hideous, I suspect they might be valuable. According to the documents I have, they were made by Jerome Massier and are his "Singing Frogs." -- Betty, Westminster, Colo.

A: You are going to croak with joy when I tell you that your figurines are valued at $1,200 in Warman's Majolica Identification and Price Guide by Mark F. Moran.

According to Moran, the Massier family began producing ceramics in Vallauris, France, during the mid-18th century.

Q: I have a painting by Emmanuel P. Matthews entitled "Picnic on the Pond." I was told several years ago by a representative of a major auction house that it could be worth as much as $10,000, but I would have to bring it to New York for a real appraisal. What is your advice? -- Samantha, Streator, Ill. A: If you plan to sell your painting, the first thing you need to do is get an appraisal by a certified expert. This expert isn't a neighbor or someone who claims to know a little about artwork. To find an appraiser, I suggest you contact one of the associations, namely The American Society of Appraisers, P.O. Box 17265, Washington, DC 20005; The International Society of Appraisers, 1131 SW 7th St., Suite 105, Renton, WA 98055; or The Appraisers Association of America, 386 Park Ave. South, No. 2000, New York, NY 10016.

Experts generally provide two types of appraisals, verbal and written. Written appraisals are especially recommended for insurance purposes. After you have gotten an appraisal, then the time has come to contact some of the larger auction houses. The main thing is to do your homework and rely on experts who are competent and knowledgeable about artwork.

Q: I have a creamer and sugar set that I believe is at least 100 years old. I am enclosing pictures of the set, which is marked "Germany." Can you help me find out more about it? -- Sue, Montevideo, Minn.

A: Judging by the pictures you sent, I believe your set was made during the 1920s. Similar sets in my area sell in the $25 to $45 range, depending, of course, on condition.
